00:00The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
00:09Once upon a time, there lived a bamboo cutter with his wife in an old hut.
00:16Every morning he would go to the forest to cut bamboos and bring them home.
00:22He and his wife would then make different things from the bamboo and sell them in the market.
00:29They were a poor couple with no child of their own, but they were happy together.
00:36One day, while cutting bamboos in the forest, he saw a strange bamboo right in the center.
00:44The bamboo shone like a bright full moon.
00:49The bamboo cutter was very curious.
00:52He carefully gave a light cut to the bamboo in order to open it.
00:57And when he did, he could not believe his eyes.
01:06It's... it's a girl!
01:10There was a tiny girl inside.
01:13She was as big as the bamboo cutter's thumb.
01:17She was the most beautiful child he had ever seen.
01:21He instantly decided to take her home to his wife,
01:24carefully taking the girl out in his palms.
01:27He cautiously walked back home.
01:30He had to be careful not to crush her.
01:33Hurry, my love! Come out and see what I found!
01:44He narrated the incident and slowly opened his hands.
01:48Instantly, their entire house lit up.
01:52The couple was surprised.
01:54She shines like the moon! We should name her Moonlight!
02:00Moonlight! She is beautiful!
02:04The wife took a cloth and placed Moonlight on it.
02:08As she admired her, a soft breeze came through the window.
02:13The tiny girl almost flew out of the wife's hands.
02:18She tried to hold Moonlight as firmly as she could.
02:22Finally, as the wind stopped, the cloth came off
02:26and the tiny girl transformed into a normal-sized baby.
02:35The couple looked at each other, surprised.
02:41Our little Moonlight is going to be a handful, isn't she?
02:45The next morning, the bamboo cutter went to the forest again to cut bamboos.
02:52Huh?
02:58The bamboo cutter and his wife knew at once.
03:02It was their little Moonlight who had brought good fortune with her.
03:08From then on, each day the bamboo cutter returned home with a gold nugget.
03:14Soon, the bamboo cutter and his wife became a couple.
03:18Soon, they became rich.
03:20They gave their Moonlight good food and dresses made of expensive silk.
03:25Months passed, and their tiny daughter was growing up faster than ever.
03:31In a short period of time, Moonlight grew to be a beautiful young woman.
03:37Her hair was silkier than the expensive dresses she wore.
03:41Her eyes sparkled like stars.
03:44Her skin was as soft as a feather.
03:47And her smile was brighter than the moon itself.
03:51She was probably the most beautiful woman on earth.
03:56But the bamboo cutter had something else to worry about.
04:00The villagers had begun to ask him about the beautiful girl in their house.
04:05One night, as Moonlight fell asleep, the bamboo cutter talked.
04:11As Moonlight fell asleep, the bamboo cutter talked to his wife.
04:15I am worried.
04:17I told everyone that we found her in the forest alone,
04:21and that we brought her home to take care of her.
04:25But she has come of age now.
04:27They have been whispering about her beauty.
04:30I know.
04:32We cannot keep her in this house forever.
04:36The next day, the bamboo cutter talked to his daughter about her marriage.
04:41He told her that there were many suitors who had asked for her hand.
04:46No, father. I can't live without you.
04:49Why are you sending me away?
04:52Oh, my lovely child.
04:55I can't live without you either.
04:57But I can't keep you in this house forever.
05:01I love you, but love does not teach us to be selfish.
05:05I have to let you go and live your life.
05:09I will never force you to marry someone against your wish.
05:13But at least meet those suitors, will you?
05:17Moonlight loved her father dearly and could not say no to him.
05:21The next day, five young suitors came to see Moonlight.
05:26They could not take their eyes off her.
05:29Moonlight looked at them with no smile on her face
05:33and spoke with no excitement in her voice.
05:37I will ask all of you to get me different things from different places.
05:43I will only marry the one who can bring me what I ask for.
05:49I will get you the dark, dull moon if you ask for it, my love.
05:54Just say it.
05:56I will say two words to you.
05:58Get out!
06:00The beautiful young lady doesn't need your dull moon.
06:03I will bring her all the sparkly stars if she wishes so.
06:07Don't listen to both of them, princess.
06:09I will bring you the shiniest pearl from the ocean.
06:14I want no moon, no stars, and no pearl from the ocean.
06:20But I want exactly what I ask for from each of you.
06:25She then asked the first suitor to bring her a bowl made of stone from a monk in India.
06:32But the bowl has to shine brighter than I do.
06:37From the second suitor, she asked for a branch of the only tree
06:41which grew at the peak of the tallest mountain on the eastern sea.
06:47Its roots were made of silver and its trunk made of gold.
06:51Its branches bore fruits of jewels.
06:55And I want the original branch of the tree.
06:59Don't disrespect me by bringing a fake one.
07:03The third suitor was asked to go to China and bring the robe of the fire rat.
07:09The fourth was asked to bring the jewel that had seven colors.
07:14It lay on the head of a dragon.
07:17And finally...
07:21Find the swallow who carries a shell in her stomach and bring me that shell.
07:30Thank you all for coming.
07:48Moonlight knew that the tasks were impossible.
07:52But this was the only way for her to stay with her parents forever.
07:58Weeks passed but the suitors never returned.
08:02The bamboo cutter told his wife of how the second suitor was caught in a thunderstorm
08:07in the eastern sea and had to return without the branch.
08:12The third suitor tried to find the fire rat but found geese instead who bit him.
08:18The fourth tried to find the dragon but when he was asked to enter the dark forest
08:24afraid he gave up.
08:26And the fifth tried to catch the swallow but was bit by her and returned.
08:32The only suitor who returned was the one who was asked to return.
08:38The only suitor who returned was the one who was asked to bring a bowl made of stone
08:44from a monk in India.
08:47He brought the shiniest bowl but it could not shine brighter than Moonlight herself.
08:54Is there no one on this land who is capable to marry our daughter?
09:09The Emperor! At our house! Oh, we are blessed!
09:15It is I who must bow down to you.
09:18For I have come to ask for your daughter's hand in marriage.
09:23I have heard of the things she demanded from those who wish to marry her.
09:28With your permission, I would like to talk to her and find out what task she may have for me.
09:36Of course. Please, have a seat. I will call her out.
09:42The Emperor waited nervously to see Moonlight.
09:46As she walked out, he was struck with her beauty.
09:50He was determined to marry her.
09:53But Moonlight had something to say.
09:57Oh, noble one, I know you can give me anything that I wish for.
10:03The jewel of the dragon, the robe of the fire ant, the branch of the golden trunk
10:09are challenges which you can easily overcome.
10:13So, I ask you for only one thing.
10:18Respect my wish to not want to marry and make no demands to know why.
10:26You are right. I can give you anything that you wish for.
10:31And if this is what you ask, then your wish is my command.
10:37But can I ask for something in return?
10:41You are a strong woman. May I have the honor to be your friend?
10:48The Emperor and Moonlight stayed friends and talked often.
10:52The bamboo cutter didn't let any more suitors in.
10:56He did not want to upset his Moonlight again.
11:00One night, as he entered her room, he saw that Moonlight was sitting by the window.
11:06She was staring at the moon and there were tears in her eyes.
11:11Moonlight, why are you crying?
11:15There is one dream that I have every night, father.
11:20I never told you because I did not want you to worry.
11:25What is it?
11:26I dream that I am being taken away to the moon by the moon people.
11:32And last night, a voice told me that the day has come.
11:37On the 15th day of this month, they will come to get me.
11:43I don't want to leave you.
11:46The bamboo cutter looked at the moon.
11:49In all these months, for the first time, he realized that the moon looked dull.
11:56As if someone has stolen its light.
11:59He was worried for his daughter.
12:02He immediately sent a message to the Emperor and asked for his help.
12:06The Emperor swore to not let anybody take his Moonlight away.
12:12On the 15th day of this month, I want 2,000 royal guards outside Moonlight's house.
12:19Nobody is to touch her.
12:22The 15th day arrived.
12:24Moonlight's house was surrounded by 2,000 royal guards ready with their arrows.
12:31The Emperor himself drew his sword and stood in front of the house.
12:37The bamboo cutter took Moonlight to the basement.
12:40Her mother held her tight.
12:42Everybody was ready to protect her.
12:45Then suddenly, a bright light shone from the sky.
12:50What is that?
12:51I can't see anything.
12:54A beautiful cart flew down with many little fairies flying around.
13:00They played a beautiful tune on their flutes.
13:03Suddenly, Moonlight closed her eyes and was flown towards the music.
13:09She flew out of her basement with her parents running behind her.
13:14The fairies touched Moonlight with a silver shiny feather.
13:18And Moonlight's dress was transformed into a long flowy white gown.
13:24She opened her eyes and smiled brightly.
13:28Her fear was gone.
13:30She walked to her parents and hugged them.
13:35Father, you took such good care of me.
13:39But I must return to my people to do my duty.
13:45What?
13:46I don't understand.
13:49The moon is dull because I am here on earth.
13:54I am the moonlight.
13:56The moon is incomplete without me.
13:59I am the light that guides humankind in their dark nights.
14:04I wandered off during the day and forgot who I was when I set foot on earth.
14:10Confused and tired, I sat in the bamboo and you found me.
14:17So, you have to go now? Won't you miss us?
14:22Mother, I will come to see you every night.
14:26The only time you won't see me is when there will be no moon in the sky.
14:33You have been a great friend, but I will have to leave now.
14:38Moonlight sat in her cart and happily waved goodbye to her people on earth.
14:44She was not sad for she knew she will always watch over them from the sky.
14:50The cart took her up to the moon.
14:54The bamboo cutter wiped his tears and waited for his moonlight to return.
14:59And she did, as the light to the full moon.
15:04The moon shone with its full might.
15:07The emperor never married anyone else.
15:10Every night he would stare at the moon for hours and smile at the love of his life.
15:17The bamboo cutter transformed his big house into the old small hut.
15:23For that was the only way to let his moonlight enter their house through the roof in the night.
15:29The bamboo cutter and his wife spent the rest of their lives in peace.
15:34The End
