00:00All right, it is Bob Ryan and Gary Tanguay and this podcast is brought to you by Price
00:21Picks, the exclusive daily fantasy partner of the C-Linus Media Network.
00:24Pick more, pick less with Price Picks.
00:26Okay, Bob, finally, finally, we're getting close to the season opener here.
00:31How are we feeling about the Celtics right now?
00:34Feeling good.
00:35There's no reason not to feel good.
00:36I think the one question is just, when are we going to see Prazingis?
00:40And that being the case, May, May, May.
00:45That being the case, how are we, how are we going to, is Joe Mozilla going to handle Al
00:50Horford who has not seen the light of day in the first two exhibitions as far as I know?
00:55And that's an issue, but everything else I think is looking good.
01:01Hey, I'll tell you a guy that he's, I don't want to say that's a cliche, so he's on a
01:06mission.
01:07He's out to prove something and that's Jalen Brown.
01:11Jalen Brown looks terrific.
01:13And I mean, really, you know, I mean, I know it's two exhibition games left, but I'm telling
01:16you he's motivated, you know, so I don't know if it's, if he's using that Olympic thing
01:22or I doubt he really needs anything anyway.
01:27But he looks really good.
01:29You know, the backcourts are the same backcourt.
01:31I'll tell you what I did like is both Pritchard, because I'm a member of the Pritchard Band
01:37Club from day one.
01:39And you know, he's had some, he and Hauser, and Hauser looks, he made a move to the hoop.
01:45I said, where's that from?
01:46You know, we're used to Hauser just cranking up the three.
01:48He made a beautiful move to the hoop the other day.
01:51And in addition to using the street, they look good.
01:54Everything looks good.
01:55I mean, here's my philosophy, which here's my philosophy with Jalen Brown.
01:58And again, everything changed when they traded Marcus Smart.
02:01God bless him.
02:02He was a fan favorite.
02:03But it freed Jalen up to establish the role of a leader.
02:08And I feel he is feeding off of that.
02:09I feel like he thinks it is his responsibility to guide this team.
02:14And it is, because while Jason Tatum, we've seen him do a number of great things.
02:21And you know, the leader of this team is Brown.
02:25He is now.
02:27We know Jason Tatum is one of the players going to be a Hall of Famer.
02:31Hell, Brown's on his way to having a Hall of Fame career.
02:33We'll see what happens.
02:34But I mean, he is he is the adult in the room.
02:38And I think he's taking it seriously.
02:40And yeah, I'm sure he's using the Olympics as a little bit of a motivation.
02:43But what I'm excited to see is soup to nuts.
02:47It's like because you and I both talked about it, Bob, the reason he didn't make the Olympic
02:49team was because he became a different guy in the playoffs.
02:53We're going to see this guy for the entire season.
02:57And I can't wait.
02:59And by the way, he I didn't see the beginning of the game, but I saw the you know, the replay
03:04of it later.
03:05He addressed the crowd in Abu Dhabi.
03:07Yeah.
03:08And he sprinkled in some local language.
03:11I don't even know.
03:12Is it Arabic?
03:13I would think in.
03:14It must be great, Bob.
03:15I don't know.
03:16I would think.
03:17I don't know.
03:18But whatever it was, you know, we know it turns out he's a big fan of the region.
03:21He spent a lot of time in Bahrain.
03:22He spent a lot of time in the United Arab Emirates.
03:27You know, I mean, he's so he the crowd in the world, the crowd absolutely loved it when
03:33he broke out the, you know, the local language.
03:36So anyway, he's he's he's a I keep saying what he's done, his basketball, his future
03:41after basketball is not in basketball.
03:44He'll be making his mark in society in some way outside of basketball.
03:48Yeah, we get no doubt.
03:50You think management.
03:51Do you think Joe has to be concerned with load management?
03:54Because while we look at these guys as being young, what are we talking about?
03:57I mean, Jalen's been in nine years for him.
03:59Oh, no.
04:00He said, yeah, they're still in their 20s, but they start when they're 19.
04:03And now he's a veteran, a seasoned veteran.
04:07They have he's got sufficient depth to play around.
04:10You know what I'm saying?
04:11Yeah.
04:12And I think so.
04:13And yes, they've got enough.
04:16That's what they want to conquer.
04:18I continue to say they have the best starting five in the league.
04:22They have the best one to eight in the league and have the best one to even 10 or 11 in
04:25the league.
04:26No team has as many quality NBA players as the Boston Celtics.
04:32And that's a fact.
04:33Now, other teams is a cluster of greatness, but they don't have the depth.
04:36They have tremendous depth.
04:39And I think it's really a tribute to Danny and Brad for what they've been able to come
04:44up with.
04:45And Brad now, you know, padding up the lineup.
04:48So we'll see.
04:49Yeah.
04:50So I'm I'm really looking forward to the season for the Celtics.
04:53I don't think Missoula will get caught up in it.
04:55I could.
04:56Well, Tibbs has been.
04:57Oh, no.
04:58Tibbs has been around a while.
04:59So with the Knicks.
05:00But, you know, during the regular season, they're going to be gunning for the Celtics.
05:04Oh, yeah.
05:05As we saw, the Lakers won the in-season tournament.
05:08But what did that do for them?
05:10But I could see Missoula like he's going to stick to the game plan.
05:13They're going to they're going to take care of their guys as a whole.
05:17And they're not going to, you know, everybody look, everybody, the Celtics are a target
05:22every night.
05:23Yeah.
05:24Yeah.
05:25And Missoula will not succumb to that.
05:26Oh, this is a day from top to bottom.
05:29We're both speckled down.
05:31They have decided last season was nice.
05:35Now we have it.
05:36It's a new year.
05:37I mean, think about it, Bob, for a minute, like if you're if you're Jalen Brown and you're
05:41Tatum, but to win back to back is a big deal now because after the look, the bronze era
05:46is over.
05:47I love him.
05:48Let's face it.
05:49He's on the back nine.
05:50But, you know.
05:53There are no Spurs.
05:54The Spurs are gone.
05:55You know, the Bulls are gone.
05:56No Warriors.
05:57Warriors are gone.
05:59There's no Dynasties.
06:00There's no Warriors.
06:01No.
06:02There's no Warriors.
06:03You know, everybody's like, you know, let's win one and we'll see what happens.
06:05I mean, for the Celtics.
06:08But so they want to make them and when you play for the Celtics, you're acutely aware
06:12of the history.
06:13And these guys, these we know these guys know that they've already identified that we want
06:17to win another one so they can, you know, be able to be discussed in some terms with
06:22the with the the big three, the original big three, you know, who won three times.
06:28And yeah, they want to be they want to win multiple times.
06:31But I mean, the point is that they are focusing on this year and they're not living.
06:36They're not in any way resting on the laurels, quote unquote, at all.
06:40I don't think that that they're they're very adamant about that.
06:43And I think we can take them at their word.
06:45That's all.
06:46So now, once again, the big thing we've discussed clearly the two teams, they're two big rivals.
06:53In the division, they're both in division, not just the conference have loaded up and
06:57improved on paper, you know, the Knicks and the Sixers.
07:00So that's going to be, you know, challenging good.

07:56You know, I wonder, do you think if Tatum doesn't start strong offensively, that's an
08:02issue for him mentally?
08:05Maybe I, but no, except that he, he is improved in every other way along the way.
08:12You know, he's a, he's a, a passer, a better passer.
08:15Now he's a, he could be a facilitator.
08:17He is a facilitator and, and I, I am harping on his improved defensive rebounding.
08:23I thought that's one of the unspoken, unattributed factors in the playoffs was his great defensive
08:28rebounding and traffic.
08:30And that wasn't always the case.
08:31He was a okay rebounder, but he's become a damn good one, but Oh yeah, he can contribute
08:37in different ways, but still you couldn't, you don't want him having to get some started
08:42shooting 20% on threes and how could it not get to him?
08:45So yeah, we, we don't want to see that.
08:47Well, I would say, I, I hope that they're more selective with the threes, but I don't
08:52think that's going to happen.
08:53Well, when the first exhibition going to come out and take 61, which would have been a franchise
08:57record, they cut it down to 47 in the second game and you're racing 47 threes and 46 twos.
09:04That's what they had in the second game.
09:05Well, that's what Belichick would call a balanced offense.
09:09Yeah, right.
09:10So that's right.
09:11And I had to laugh at that, that the way it came out, you know, you don't aim for that,
09:14but that's what it came out.
09:15And now, cause I aim for at least that, I mean, you know, but now you might, you know,
09:1961 was absurd, but in the second game, 11 different guys made it three.
09:24Yeah.
09:25But that's, that's hardly unique to the Boston Celtics.
09:29That's the NBA of 2024, you know.
09:33It is.
09:34There's no doubt.
09:35By the way, in the Knicks opener, Towns looked good and fitting in, you know.
09:43Now the thing about, the one thing about Towns is he's not a, even though he's seven
09:47feet tall, he's not a quality rim protector at all.
09:50It's the other end of the floor where he's, he's still vulnerable, but on offense, he's
09:54going to really enhance that team.
09:57I don't know.
09:58Must be guarded.
09:59I don't know enough about his personality.
10:03Is this a guy that's going to be on a mission because he was dealt?
10:07I don't know about, I really don't know either.
10:09And New York, you know, we're going to find out because we know that in any sport, New
10:13York's not for everybody.
10:14And in any sport, it doesn't matter.
10:17And New York's not for everybody.
10:20And, and this is, so they're going to find out, I guess, you know, presumably they'd
10:24done their vetting.
10:25And of course, Thibodeau knows him.
10:26Of course.
10:27And of course, we have one of the issues was that there were people, there was some friction
10:31when they were, when they were together in Minnesota, which they both say now is ancient
10:36history.
10:37Well, I mean, it better be because this is their, this is their last chance.
10:41Yeah.
10:42So yeah.
10:43Yeah.
10:44Yeah.
10:45Right.
10:46But, but anyway, I'm an opening night.
10:47We're going to get a taste.
10:48We're going to be hit us right in the face on the 22nd of October is here come the Knicks.
10:51So good.
10:52Good.
10:53That's a good opener.
10:54One guy who I, I feel terrible saying this, but I always forget about him and I feel bad
11:01about it is Zion.
11:04I just always forget.
11:05The whole league.
11:07Now, right.
11:08The reason you do is that here's his games played in his, this is year six.
11:13He's had five years, 24, 61, zero, 29.
11:20And last year he had a career high 70.
11:23And I'm sure that would be a figure that they would gladly take in the world.
11:27Sure.
11:28But the point is he got hurt in the end in the playoffs.
11:32No, not late in the season against a big game against the Lakers 40 point game.
11:36Great.
11:37This hamstring.
11:38Oh, by the way, his injuries include meniscus in 19, 19 and 99, 19, 20 missed the whole
11:46season to a foot 21, 22.
11:48And now it's been a recurrent hamstrings.
11:50Okay.
11:51With him.
11:52Now the question to him of spin from always that body, that body is, is both.
11:57When he came out of college, Bob, I mean, he came out of college.
12:00Everybody said it.
12:01It's a blessing and a curse at the same time.
12:03History has taught us those bodies or things somewhat like them don't do well in terms
12:09of longevity in the NBA.
12:10And there's been a question from day one is whether his body would betray him.
12:14It's his asset on the one hand, because there ain't nobody like him.
12:17This guy's a package.
12:18And I'm with you.
12:19It's a shame.
12:20I love watching him play.
12:21He's, he can handle it.
12:22He can shoot.
12:23He can, he can move.
12:25He can take it to the hoop.
12:26He can post up.
12:27I mean, he can do the whole, the whole package.
12:29He's a, he's a, you know, and he's averaged and in this, in this four full seasons, he's
12:34played, he's averaged 22, 27, 26, and 23.
12:38And he loves to play the game.
12:39It's like, when you just make, you just mentioned all of his attributes.
12:42When I see that big guy play, it's like he's playing on the playground like that.
12:46If he wasn't in the NBA, that guy would be at a court from like sunup to sundown.
12:50Yeah.
12:51Well, he's a, he's an anomaly.
12:52There's nobody quite, there's nobody in the league with that body.
12:55Nobody quite like him.
12:56Yeah.
12:57It's too bad.
12:58He quietly won 43 games last year.
13:01Well, I, I, uh, and, and, uh, you know, now here's their, and, and I've got a pretty good
13:07backboard at the hunt.
13:08They Murray and the Trent, they excuse me.
13:10And, and, uh, McCollum, they got CJ McCollum.
13:13Um, Jose Alvarado is a nice backup.
13:16Guess what?
13:17I have in her roster as a center.
13:20Daniel Tice team.
13:23Number six.
13:25Good for him, man.
13:26Since he left the Celtics, he's played with Chicago, Houston, Indiana, uh, the Clippers
13:32and now, and now, uh, the Pelicans, Daniel Tice, he's 32.
13:36And, uh, you know, he, he keeps finding a job.
13:39Good for him.
13:40Get the pension kid.
13:41Just get the pension.
13:42Yep.
13:43So get the pension now, but you know, nobody's thinking they're going to be anything great
13:47over in the West, but you know, they did win 43 last year and people, uh, uh, you know,
13:52people, they're respectable and, uh, that they've been fighting for, for, uh, you know,
13:58recognition in that town and, uh, really, and, uh, so it's still a football town.
14:03All right.
14:04Now, LeBron and Bronnie, I know it's a, it's a topic near and dear to your heart.
14:08I have played four minutes together.
14:10They played, they brought, they made history and, and, and, uh, preseason, uh, first time
14:15in, in NBA history that the father son have performed in the game.
14:19Uh, and you know, well, that's it.
14:21They found it.
14:22It happened.
14:23Uh, we'll see how JJ Riddick, uh, Riddick treats this whole thing.
14:29And, uh, uh, we all assume Bronnie's going to be going to the G league.
14:34It won't be on the roster, but, uh, maybe, you know, I, I, yeah, it's hard enough.
14:41I mean, no coach has ever had this issue to deal with.
14:44I mean, and it is an issue to deal with, not just the idea of a young prospect, but you
14:49know, the dynamics here are unique and special.
14:52And, and, uh, uh, I don't envy, uh, coach the coach at all with this, but, uh, you know,
14:57he, he went in with his eyes open though.
14:59He had to know.
15:00Oh, he knew what the deal was.
15:01Yeah.
15:02Yeah.
15:03But you have to wait.
15:04You have to say, is he going to take the spot of somebody who can help me?
15:07Yeah.
15:08Right.
15:09Or am I better off just keeping him on the roster?
15:10So I keep, you know, his father happy, but the reality is Bob.
15:15And I think you've said this is that for him to stay on the roster and do nothing, doesn't
15:20help the young player.
15:21Oh, not at all.
15:22He's better off playing in the G league.
15:24Now the word on him, uh, technically, of course, our, our great colleague, Jeff Goodman is
15:29right.
15:30You know, when we haven't really is, uh, he's a ready-made defensive player.
15:34He's defensively ready to play in the NBA at age 19.
15:39But, uh, he's, and, and in fact, the word, uh, dynamic or somewhere, they used to be
15:43disruptive.
15:44A D word was used by one of his teammates, you know, about what he could be, uh, but
15:48offensively, you know, uh, a little raw and, and needs a lot, a lot more polish and working
15:54on a shot, et cetera, which tells me how can they be ridiculous not to send him to the
15:59G league and work on it for a year.
16:02But, but he's, but the thing is that how many, how many young, how many 19 year olds would
16:07get that kind of praise unless they're like seven feet four?
16:10You know what I mean?
16:11Right.
16:12Right.
16:13Not many.
16:14And so that's, keep your, just keep your mind on eye on that or keep your ears open on that,
16:17that they think he's defensively ready already.
16:19Well, if you'd like to play defense, you'll always have a job in the league.
16:23Yeah, right.
16:24So there it is.
16:25There's no doubt about that.
16:26Look, there's nothing like seeing a game live.
16:28I mean, watching it on TV is great.

18:08What time is it?
18:09It's Game Time.
18:10Okay, I noticed today that the Miami Heat are going to name the floor in Miami after Pat Riley,
18:16like the Red Arbeck floor, and now you have the Red Arbeck Center.
18:20It seems, well, we all know that Riley's still alive, and a drinking buddy of yours from the 1976 NBA title.
18:28A pool buddy.
18:30But it seems to me, you name the floor after Riley, there should be a statue of this guy.
18:37They should name a building after this guy.
18:39They should name a highway after this guy, to me.
18:42I don't know.
18:43I think that's a pretty nice tribute.
18:45It's just the beginning, because as Celtic fans, we don't like him, but let's face it.
18:50He has an amazing list of accomplishments.
18:55Well, here's the reputation of the famous F. Scott Fitzgerald line about no second acts,
19:03because he's had a second and a third act, and this third act is pretty damn good in Miami.
19:11He didn't leave New York well.
19:14He didn't leave New York well.
19:17I think he resigned by email or something.
19:24It's a fascinating career.
19:26It's a fascinating career.
19:28It starts with high school superstardom and it's connected in New York.
19:32He's the son of a minor league baseball player.
19:34I don't know if you knew that.
19:35His father was a baseball lifer, Lee Riley, L-E-E.
19:39But a disciplinarian, apparently.
19:41Riley's a disciplinarian.
19:43Then he goes to Kentucky and his star rups once.
19:48He was jumping center at 6'3".
19:52Of course, they were the losing team to the famous Texas Western in 1966.
19:57Then he goes and he's in the NBA.
20:01He's a backup guard.
20:03He does play on the 71-72 Laker championship team.
20:07Then he's out of basketball at one point.
20:12He's a carpenter, I believe.
20:13Then he gets on a bench with Chick Hearn in the booth with Chick Hearn.
20:19Jack McKinney tumbles on the bike and West Head comes in.
20:25He goes to the bench.
20:27West Hood, there was a coup d'etat led by Magic.
20:32A proper thing, by the way, I will always defend Magic for doing that
20:36because West Head was screwing up that team.
20:41Magic did the right thing.
20:43He becomes the coach.
20:45Showtime, ladies and gentlemen, is his legacy in L.A.
20:51Showtime, etc.
20:54Go all the way back to that.
20:56Then we got the Knicks.
20:57He reinvents himself completely.
21:00With a thug team.
21:02Forget Showtime.
21:03This is on the waterfront.
21:06I'm serious.
21:08Then he goes to Miami.
21:11Now he's an executive.
21:13He's hiring the right people and making the right trades.
21:17Wow.
21:18He's got like seven rings.
21:21Yeah.
21:22That was Miami and then five with L.A.
21:24You made an illusion.
21:26I might as well tell the story once.
21:27Not everybody has heard the story.
21:29Yeah, but I like it anyway.
21:30In the 1976 NBA finals, I was staying at Paul Westphal's house
21:35because I was having problems with Tommy Heinsohn.
21:38Westphal had a pool.
21:40We were good buddies.
21:42After the practice, we'd go to the pool and sit around.
21:45Alvin Adams lived down the street.
21:47Keith Erickson would drop over.
21:49Another guy would drop over and say somewhere to go.
21:52He was the 13th man on the 12-man roster.
21:55The guy left off the roster, Pat Riley.
21:58That's my Pat Riley personal anecdotal story there
22:02about the life at Westphal's pool with Pat Riley.
22:06Did you have a chance to talk with him much once he became the suit and the hair?
22:12Not really.
22:14When he was coaching the Lakers, yeah, but not afterward.
22:17No, I haven't had much interaction since he's been in Miami.
22:21A lot of it, I'm officially retired in my last season.
22:24Right, but you were on the beach.
22:26Was there a big difference between the guy sitting by the pool
22:30and the guy that was running the Lakers?
22:32I don't think so.
22:33No, the brain was – I don't really think so.
22:38I wouldn't say that, but he's – no, no, not really.
22:43He's a guy we know, but it is a fascinating career.
22:47Congratulations to you, Pat, for getting the court named.
22:50That's fascinating, really.
22:54Other than Red Auerbach, the NBA, you see this in college more and more.
23:00Coach K, there's others I know out there that have their names, but this is –
23:06Should the Lakers do something?
23:09I don't know what the Lakers did.
23:11It didn't end – he wound up with a little friction with Jerry West, I think.
23:16Yeah, well, West, yeah, yeah.
23:19Which is unfortunate, but –
23:21Was Jerry West who wanted him, or was it the owner?
23:26That's a good question.
23:27I can't answer that.
23:28I forgot.
23:29I can't answer that.
23:30I can tell you this.
23:31The Lakers, in the heyday of Showtime, they functioned ideally.
23:35The owner owned the – the MGM, then the coach coached,
23:38and they didn't get in each other's way at all.
23:41But in the end, there was some problem or some difference of opinion,
23:44I guess, with Jerry and Pat, but not –
23:47When they were in the championships, they weren't, that's for sure.
23:50Yeah, no.
23:51I mean, look, it always happens.
23:53I mean, it just – things just don't seem to end well.
23:57But I do think his greatest accomplishment was sticking with Spolstra.
24:02Oh, that was – absolutely.
24:04That's a good – you're absolutely right.
24:06Because I thought, oh, who's this guy?
24:08He promoted Spolstra.
24:10Absolutely, and now he's going to the Hall of Fame.
24:13Spolstra's going to walk into the Hall of Fame when it's over.
24:16Yeah, very good point.
24:17You're right.
24:18That is exactly right.
24:19I mean, I thought of him, and he could take full credit for him.
24:23Absolutely, yeah.
24:24All right, Bob.
24:25Well, listen, my friend, we will talk to Mr. Goodman.
24:28Yes.
24:29He will be joining us later on in the week, my friend.
