Transcript
00:00Lived the life that we live every single day when he was teammates with Jermaine Wiggins
00:06That is Joe Andrews each. Oh, good morning
00:10I'm sorry to hear that. Oh, man. I mean it was a long year
00:16Did he how long did it take him to know your name
00:20I mean he we work with a lot of people and he still doesn't know any of their names
00:25Well, it's a problem we have these days you get in the head for 20 years, you know, what's your problem though?
00:31Well, you don't know somebody's name
00:41The Brockton reporter to
00:43Know your name
00:48How you doing Joe
00:50I'm good. How we doing? I'm good doing great. Have you been on I would call it like team Nick Avich team
00:58Chatham
01:00team team tie law
01:04Team what gronk team gronk where you think it was the right thing to do to wait until this Sunday for Drake May
01:13Well, it's just timing I mean
01:15You know
01:17Reset's been in there for a month now and you know, it's they drafted in what number three
01:22I'm gonna stay paying them to sit on the sidelines
01:24I mean, you know
01:25I was once told that you know when I made the Green Bay roster as a rookie free agent in 97 is
01:32That you're not a rookie anymore
01:34You know, you're a part of this team and now you gotta help out and do whatever it's called upon and you know
01:40and I wasn't making a 1% of what he's probably making this year, but
01:46The overall I mean you gotta do when you when you called upon you got the next man up and you know
01:53They went into a little stretch here and now they need that little spark and you know, here we go
01:58New ever starting as an o-line guy how much of Jacoby Brissett struggles?
02:04Do you put on that offensive line so far?
02:08So far I mean, it's
02:10They're not thinking
02:12You know, they got different guys each week. So it gets harder and harder
02:16You know as we use a you know, he's half offensive line and you know
02:20He knows that you know
02:21You guys five six guys and even running back seven sometimes and you gotta be in think you gotta know
02:28You know whether it's a blitz or start. You gotta know what's coming. You got to see it
02:32You know, and you gotta make a quick second decision. Maybe a half a second
02:37so sometimes it just happens on the run and
02:40you know instincts play a lot play a big part and hopefully this line can gel together and
02:46Form behind form in front of me and you know
02:50See how they pull forward and how they protect them Joe
02:53One of the biggest things for me to play Drake may was was you draft them that high?
02:59And he's behind a journeyman always competing with a journeyman backup
03:03You're a team that doesn't have high expectations and I always felt like and you know
03:07You could probably talk about it just as well
03:09The more playing experience you get from actually playing in real football games every Sunday
03:17It it's it's so beneficial to whether or not you're either gonna grow as a player or the coaching staff
03:23Can look at you and go? Okay, it might be really difficult for this guy to play in the NFL
03:30I mean when we were playing we were actually hitting in practice and we were actually, you know doing more than they do nowadays
03:36too bad, we didn't get paid like they did these days wait, but
03:41You know over overall. I think yeah, you're a hundred cent, right?
03:45and but a lot of people still look at the Aaron Rodgers and the
03:50And love and how Green Bay did it and these guys, you know
03:54They said they learned and then they sparked when they had their opportunity
03:59But you know when you get a guy and it's first round and I don't even know what he signed for
04:04But you're paying them millions of dollars and you know, you're part of this team now. It's time to step up
04:09I don't care how young you are. No, it's it's
04:12The next guy up and the old lion has to really come together this week and focus it on what they have to do
04:18It's a team as a unit and help out and keep this guy up, right?
04:22I mean, you don't want him running around, you know biting his fingernails and in the huddle and
04:27You know scared scared to get under the center, so he's got a
04:31He's got a man up and old lion has the man up to and get out there and do their best
04:36Joe when you hear different reports coming out of a potential mutiny in the locker room
04:41Or you have guys calling each other out saying that they're playing selfish. How much do you put that on?
04:47On Gerard Mayo because it feels like we've talked about it on the show that under Bill Belichick
04:52They kept everything really in-house
04:57Very true, I mean, you know, a lot of people's scare tactics
05:01I think and that's how Bill ran ran things and you know, a lot of people were
05:06scared of Bill and
05:08You know, you don't want to be able you don't be that guy. That's
05:12Button heads with coaches or other teammates and pointing fingers because that's not a team player
05:18You know win or lose you you play as a team and you win or lose as a team
05:23So, you know overall you got to go out there and you know play together play, you know
05:30cheer each other up cheer each other on and you know, don't don't blame anybody and but yourself and
05:36That's what I built did a lot of years and I'm sure
05:40Gerard
05:41He knows a lot of that being a player being a coach on the bill
05:46And you know, he understands that aspect but he's you know
05:51Right his ship right now and you know, it's still beginning and still
05:55Growing so hopefully they can get this ship upright and keep going forward
06:00Do you now look back at being scared of bill as being a positive thing?
06:08Well, you look at it now, yeah, you just explain us, you know, it's just ask the question you look at things like that
06:14It's you know, I've seen it throughout my 10-year career
06:18I don't know about you wig, but when you don't get that respect, it's not really scared tactics. It's respect
06:24You need to have that respect in that, you know, it's kind of like a scare tactic where you know
06:29You don't want to do wrong. I mean
06:31Wait, what was Monday morning Monday morning meeting lowlights?
06:35Low light. Yeah, you didn't want to make you didn't want to make the low light
06:39No, you walk out of that you walk out of that room and you feel like you're just a you know
06:43Horrible football player, but you know, it's like you walk out with your head down man. I suck and we just won by 21
06:55Joe what was that? Most angry you ever saw bill Belichick. I
07:02Remember one time I was in the game and I got a response my conduct on
07:08On a guy at like the one yard line and we'll push this back
07:12Thank God we ended up scoring
07:13But I remember walking off the field and I tried to walk away from him
07:18And I saw him at my peripheral vision. I saw him at the corner of my eye
07:22Following me as I'm walking down the sideline
07:25I'm trying to walk the furthest point away and get to the head just get off the field and he keeps following me
07:31I'm like, oh no. Oh, no
07:34Yeah, you got a few choice words for me there
07:36And
07:38That was classic when Bill you Bill loved the f-bomb
07:42He loved loved the f-bomb and Joe Joe will tell you there and in mail
07:47That's why I said males probably taking a page out of his book and maybe it's a little bit different
07:51But it was their respect and like to scare tactics and we would be out on the bus after games
07:58Thinking about how bad some of the plays that we might have made
08:02Individually to see if they were gonna be on the low light and how bad he was gonna embarrass us. Oh
08:08Yeah, wait, you could have scored four touchdowns and then that one miss block that sacked Brady
08:14You know, it was going up first play and you knew as soon as as soon as it comes up
08:18You can see a lot of guys know like this is the play it just goes up on the film and he doesn't press play
08:23Yet and you're like, oh no put your head down. You're like damn here it comes
08:28You know
08:29But you know and Greg that might be to your point of liking and Joe Greg always talks about that
08:34you know the players and
08:36Our time and I hate to go back to like, you know when we played type, you know, oh, yeah, you hate doing that
08:44But like mentally I think we were just
08:48Tougher because there were more old-school coaches back then
08:52Yeah
08:53We're now, you know
08:54The coaches are more of a new school type of coaches all over like even Scott Necker was an old-school mentality
08:59With a lot of these newer coaches even positional coaches. They come from this new age of coaching
09:05Well having played with Tom Brady and the way Tom Brady was inserted into the lineup
09:12I from a when you hear some say that you don't want to ruin Drake May mentally
09:18By putting him in too early. Do you laugh at that Joe?
09:23No, not at all. I mean Brady, you know, he had that one year, but he was also
09:29what basically a free agent about six-round pick and you know, he had
09:34Opportunity to work on his game and whole offseason and then move up in the depth shot and when he had his chance
09:41He stepped in there and he he's a competitor
09:43I don't know Drake May personally, but he seems like a competitor when he gets out there on the field and he's
09:50Hopefully the team can rally around him and you know, we'll see what the future holds but uh, you know
09:56Overall, it's just one of those things where you just got to take a step back to move forward
10:01So hopefully they can step back and slow things up and just take it one play at a time offense defense and special teams
10:09Joe
10:09Expert one of our one of our listeners one of our viewers on twitch would like to plug for your foundation if you could he's been
10:16Waiting for that
10:18Well
10:19This Thursday October 10th. We're going to be at Gillette Stadium not watching the Patriots
10:24But it's my 17th annual Joe Andrews a foundation gala at the new
10:30GP atrium under that big big scoreboard. They got up there a bill, but whatever you want to call it, but uh
10:37You know, it's going to be a great night. We got a lot of great stories to share
10:41We're raising funds to help patients all throughout New England with cancer pay for cancer patients for utilities food
10:49rent transportation treatment, you know, we help with the homeland bills that are sometimes forgotten about and
10:55when you hear that patients
10:57become bankrupt after a
11:0050% of patients become bankrupt after a cancer battle and there's something wrong with our
11:05without health system a health care system because that shouldn't happen somebody battling for their life and
11:11You want to get better at home and you know, you finish your treatment
11:15You're alive and you have no place to live
11:18But you know, it's one of those things that uh, you know has to be looked upon and you know
11:22You know there's money out there and you know, hopefully we're paying your phone
11:26We're helping the biggest thing that we can ever get is a thank you two words
11:31Just that thank you and you know reflects
11:34Myself my wife Jen our whole staff are all about constituents our sponsors that you know
11:39It's one of the things that lifts your spirits and makes you want to do more and you know helped over 50,000
11:47Patients individuals all throughout New England where you know, we brought in since
11:52Since 2008, you know, we give rides we help with food and we help with many different barriers
11:58It's uh, you know, it's amazing. We're hoping to raise some good funds. We got a lot of great prizes a lot of auction items
12:05Good thing is to us that it's sold out, but there is still ways that you can check out Joe Andrews II foundation org
12:14From more information and I yell if you anybody's interested in Celtics fans
12:19We got a great sweepstakes going on right now for two tickets to the Celtics opener on October 22nd
12:26Banner night. So and I want to go see them raise the banner. We also have
12:31Dinner at a the Louie's and a stay at actually a beacon hotel, so
12:36It'll be up until October 14th, and then the winner will be announced. So open the gala, you know goes great this year
12:43I've got a lot of past and a lot of current Patriots coming up to say hi
12:49So looking forward to a great night and hearing a lot of great stories from patients and individuals and raise some funds to help
12:57others that are in need
12:59Joe before you go if you had to be put on the spot right now, what year is the next banner raised at Gillette Stadium?
13:11Let's see, I'm not giving another year or two so maybe 26
13:16Every year is different. They're rebuilding and you never know what that year is. You see what happens this year and
13:23teams come in you think they're gonna be in a top in their division and then all of a sudden oh and four oh and five
13:29Whatever whatever's going on with some of these teams, but you just never know every year is different
13:33especially with free agency nowadays, so we'll see what the
13:38future holds
13:40You know, and I said earlier, you know, they don't have that callus anymore
13:45They formerly you got a form of callus to get you know, when you stop getting hit and
13:50Training camp and you're starting to feel it aches and pains, you know by a second third week
13:55You don't feel it anymore as much unless you know, unless you're hurt but for me, it's you know
14:00I got this experience getting in and training and I was like, I don't feel that
14:05You know, by, uh, second, third week, you don't feel it anymore as much,
14:09unless, you know, unless you're hurt, but there's a difference
14:12between being hurt and injured.
14:14So if you're hurt, you still play what you play for the whole season hurt.
14:18And then if you're injured, that's a different story.
14:21All right.
14:21Joe Andrewsy, great to hear your voice and great work by you and
14:25good luck on Thursday night.
14:26There's Joe Andrewsy.
14:28Yeah.
14:28Good stuff.
14:30And I, like I said, I think the, just even with like a coach, like
14:34who coached Joe for so many years, the old school mentality of coaching
14:41is probably like, you know, almost at the extinct point in the NFL, where
14:49even like some of the, the, the offensive line coach who's left NFL head
14:53coach wise, who has that approach.
14:57The old, I mean, Andy, Andy reads an old school type of coach, but I don't
15:03know if he's like that old school, like, you know, like there's two different
15:07ways that, you know, you thought about old school coaches back in the day.
15:11And we used to say he was the, he was the Victor, he was the victim of
15:15senior violence at the hands of Travis Kelsey during a super bowl.
15:19Yeah.
15:19So I don't think, I don't think he's that kind of guy.
15:22Yeah.
15:22He was more along those, uh, Pete Carroll player coaches, you know?
15:25So I don't know who you would throw in that category.
15:28I mean, who would other like Bill, Bill Belichick, but who, who's
15:32left around, is there anybody?
15:34There's really nobody left.
15:36No.
15:37Do the Harbaugh's count?
15:42They lean more old school than new school, but they're
15:45not necessarily old school.
15:46Yeah.
15:47So maybe I could, I could get on board with, you know, the Harbaugh's, you
15:54know, maybe, but it's just, it's, but even like their positional coaches
15:58is just different, you know?
15:59So
16:00everything changes.
16:01Are they the luckiest family in the world?
16:03The Harbaugh's?
16:03Uh, who has it better than us?
16:05No buddy.
16:07Uh, James says everybody, and it really hurts my heart, but I would say the,
16:12uh, the thing that changed at all is NIL.
16:16Now, how are you going to tell a guy coming to college?
16:18He's already got 6 million bucks in his bank account, but he
16:20has to change to make money.
16:23Yeah.
16:23Right.
16:23It's kind of a tough, tough hill to climb.
16:26Yeah.
16:27All right.
