Hall of Famer Ty Law joins for 'Ty Tuesday'! What does Ty think about Jerod Mayo's coaching style? Was he at all similar to Parcells?
Transcript
00:00watching Gerard Mayo on field in game. He doesn't appear to do a lot of coaching.
00:10I'm, you know, never played professional football. So you did on the defensive side of football.
00:20Is that weird to you that you don't see Mayo doing that? I mean, because I played with coach
00:27Belichick, the greatest, you expect all coaches to kind of handle it that way, especially being
00:32a defensive guy. And they're having most of their problems. They have problems all across the board,
00:36especially on defense. So when Gerard doesn't come over to grab the tablet or whatever they're doing
00:45and jumping up in everybody's face and getting in their grill, that is a little bit different.
00:50But some people just, you know, delegate to their coordinators. Okay, but he's not calling plays.
00:56So either side, what is he doing? I mean, probably everything. Well, I would ask Ty this, then
01:03maybe, maybe Belichick's not the right example. What was it like with Parcells? Did Parcells come
01:10over and or did he delegate and kindness? Because it seems like Gerard's delegated and staying out
01:15of the way and looking at the Parcells would delegate in. You can see him jumping on, you know,
01:22Bill, if Belichick, you'll see him go to, he'll come over to the defense to get our minds right.
01:29So I say he was a master manipulator, so it might not have been through X's and O's, but he's
01:33definitely going to come and coach his way, whether that's, you know, jumping on your ass and say,
01:37you better get it together. I'm going to bench you, you know what I mean? So that's a motivator.
01:41When I grew up, the best motivator was getting put on the bench. You know what I mean? You know,
01:46the fear of sitting down and not participating. So I think he has to do something other than just
01:51delegating and stay there and coaching, get the stuff back through his microphone. You have to be
01:56an active participant, you know, not only, you know, coaching the team, but hey, if need be
02:02going into that offensive huddle on the sideline, doing those adjustments at halftime, if you need
02:06to get on your defense, you know what? Get off the sideline. Hey, offensive coordinator, if you're
02:11going to delegate, I need to go talk to the defense because they soft as hell. I'm not,
02:14I'm not being facetious. I'm asking this seriously. When they decide that they're
02:18going to go for two, is he making that decision? I was questioning that, honestly, when they,
02:23I don't know. I would think he would be. I would think he would be. I would think he'd be saying,
02:28hey, Alex, have your best two point conversion play because if we score, we're going for two.
02:33No, because I don't believe that he made the decision to start. You know what? He might be,
02:37hey, Curtis, he might be one of those coaches. He's like, I don't know because I'm not there.
02:41He might be like, hey, hey guys, what you think? And then he'd get all these different opinions.
02:45So Bill Belichick is going to be like, he going to ask one person,
02:53what should we do? And this is what we're going to do. Or he going to sit there and say,
02:56this is what we do. And we got to deal with it. They have a fan on the headsets and they let,
03:01they let the fan pick. It's like Ken with his headsets. Whenever he makes the decision here,
03:06he calls Greg. He stood by the decision yesterday when he talked about it. So I mean, maybe it was
03:13him, but Wiggy was on this yesterday where the, uh, would you rather be feared or loved?
03:18And that maybe Mayo's struggling with that. That was, you put it perfectly that maybe Mayo just
03:23likes to be that player's coach. Who's so loved. Who doesn't want to be loved?
03:29It's a great moment from a Bronx tale where Colosio says to Sonny, would you rather be feared
03:35or love and fear? And I think Ty, my point was, I don't think no coaches in today's era
03:42really coached that way. Like how many guys are worried about being benched? He benched
03:48Cordy brought. This is an amazing point where Mandre Stevenson fumbled like four times.
03:53He literally sat for two plays. You have to, you have to in considering what Gerard Mayo has done
03:58so far. And I get it. Ty made a great point. He's a rookie, so he's going to make mistakes, but the,
04:06I guess I'll call it the discipline element is lacking that don't exist until I
04:12was the last disciplinarian to win a Superbowl as a head coach.
04:15It was probably Bill Belichick, right? So you have Andy Reed, you have Sean McVay,
04:20you have Bruce Arians. I mean, those are the, that's the modern player.
04:26Yeah. But you also got to look who they get leading the team as far as their quarterbacks
04:30and things like that. When you talk about Andy Reed, you don't got to be a disciplinarian. You
04:34can have Patrick Mahomes right there. You don't have to be a disciplinarian. You don't have to
04:38be there. I'm talking, I would have Bruce Arians without Tom Brady.
04:41When, when I was attacked as a senior citizen by, uh, by a tight end, I would have done something
04:47discipline wise, but he didn't. So I'm talking about teams that don't have that. I'm talking
04:51like, uh, Detroit, you brought up the Rams. Like, I don't think, uh, Sean McVay is a disciplinarian.
04:58I don't think that even, um, Dan Campbell's that way. Dan Campbell though, is a guy that you fear.
05:05Yes. Yes. If you get respect, if you go, what I don't, I think don't side, don't side eye me.
05:11I'm giving you the side. That's like sighing. I think, I think, I think the guy, no, no, I think
05:18the guys respect Dan Campbell. Do you really think that somebody like, you know, uh, uh, Amara
05:26St. Brown is worried about getting banks or even Jamis like Jamis, uh, Jamison Williams got suspended
05:32again. Like, I don't think they fear these coaches because I don't fear Dan Campbell. No,
05:37they might respect him, but he's, they're not worried about that. Yeah. But Bill with literally,
05:45he told me after the, uh, the Rams game at Gillette, when we, when we almost won that game,
05:51he said, listen, if I don't get the backside cut off, regardless of the guys in basically
05:56a five technique over the tackle, he was going to cut me. And I knew that to be true because I
06:03seen him do it before. Parcells cut a guy right then on the field. Cause he didn't pass the
06:08condition. Oh yeah. No, I, that's what I'm saying. That was, that was different. Cause he will cut
06:13you right there, man. He used to have the bus at the end. If you don't pass condition, they're
06:16just going to get on the bus and leave. But he told me I'm going to be the first, first round
06:20draft pick in history in NFL to get cut. Right. Cause I did something wrong, but that's what he
06:24told me. Not like, not like I was scared, you know, I, you know, but I mean, I'm a little bit
06:28different. Some people, some people get, get afraid of that, but you have to, I don't think
06:33you should fear coach, but you should respect him. Right. You know, fear him enough to understand
06:38that, you know what he might do to some, some coaches don't have no respect or no sense of
06:44fear because you're not going to do anything to me. You're not going to cut me. Do you think
06:48that's why Brian Flores isn't a head coach anymore? Because he maybe has that mentality
06:52of instilling fear to us. Yeah. Maybe he's too aggressive, like in the, in the sense of
06:58look where he came from. Yeah. So, you know, absolutely. So those, and I think people now
07:06you can look at it as a whole from social media, from everybody got a voice now, you know, things
07:12are not kept in house. So people feel like they're look, I can say what's really going on. You know
07:17what I mean? You're I'm telling all the locker room secrets. So I think it might be a fear from
07:21a coach's standpoint, cause you get the wrong player. He'd come up in there while you're
07:25thinking be like this damn phone, you know, taping everything and then put it out there.
07:29You know what I mean? So it's probably a fear on that end too. Pats jets this weekend. Are you
07:34surprised by what Aaron Rogers isn't so far this season? You know, to be honest with you, I'm very
07:41surprised. I thought he would be playing a lot better, you know, because that is Aaron Rogers.
07:45You know, he is one of the greatest of all time, you know, even though he's not playing like it
07:49right now. So I think one of the biggest shocks to me all season, even more so than the page is
07:55just looking that bad. I did not expect Aaron Rogers to be in this position right here. See,
07:59he needs one of those bill Belichick type coaches that pause, dig up all in that ass when he's not
08:06doing what he's doing, like, like, you know, and we heard Brady and Bill digging into his nose,
08:12bumping heads, but he needs a guy on Monday morning meeting. I know you're Aaron Rogers,
08:17but guess what? I'm going to call you out and say, Hey, listen, I can get a kid from
08:21Foxborough high school to throw that pass. Right. And I think that's why he doesn't have a job this
08:26year. I'm not saying it's the right decision, but the Falcons went with a coddling player,
08:30young coach, because they view that that's the direction of the player today.
08:34And I agree with that. And that's, I think that you're courtesy, but it doesn't mean
08:38it's right. It's going to deliver results. I didn't say that. They're right. I said that
08:42that's what they perceive to be the players want and the way to get the most out of them today.
08:48And it probably creates too much of like a mutiny because there aren't many coaches out there that
08:53can do what bill does and have a good enough resume where guys will go, okay, we have to
09:00respect them to that part. There's zero fear and there's zero, there appears to be zero fear when
09:06it comes to what you're doing off the field as well. I mean, there are, there are guys who are
09:13just running a mock and not only, not only with law enforcement, but with social media and
09:21everything else that to me is a, it's, it's dysfunctional. And it's not, it's, it's just,
09:28it's dysfunctional. But then you can think about, you know, Aaron Rogers too. He's going into a new
09:34team. He is so revered and so feared by even coaches that he knows more than them. And it's
09:39like, you can't say anything because he has such great success in the league and all the MVPs. So
09:44what are you really going to tell Aaron Rogers? We don't know. He may have the attitude, but
09:50coaches coming in is like, damn, I got to give him that type of respect. He's earned it. Right.
09:56Bill Belichick didn't care. Tom Brady, he jumped up in time, just like he was anybody else. You
10:00know what I mean? So, you know, Tom, I think he embraced that, but some that's held on that level
10:06on that pedestal, they probably can't take the criticism, can't take the comeback. And that's
10:11where the issues be. So you're paying, you're paying this guy 50, $60 million, you know what
10:16I'm saying? Look, I can go straight to the owner, just like you can, you know what I mean? So
10:20that's where the headstart button and you're not coachable. So I don't know if that's the case,
10:24but all I know is Aaron Rogers, we've heard this in green Bay. Now we're going up in New York here
10:29because the coach is getting fired. Like I said, I don't know Aaron Rogers like that. No, I just
10:33know he's an all time great, but maybe it's something to that, to where they feel that he
10:37can't be coached hard because of who he is. And they are, by the way, they are favored over your
10:42New England Patriots this weekend, Curtis, the New York for the first time, I think ever the Jets
10:48lost four straight. They're entering this game, seven and a half point favorites. Damn. Has there
10:55ever been a team that lost four straight games and then entered their fifth game as more than
10:59a touchdown favorite? Well, when you're playing against whether you want to call them the homecoming
11:04team or the can't get right team, that's what you expect. Your team has lost six straight. Yeah,
11:07but you're the get right team. You're like, you know, they're like, all right, who can we whip
11:11up on? Let's roll out the New England Patriots. The other thing I look at too, that it's, it's
11:16probably harder to do for Mayo and coach now in this era of football. I think the players today,
11:22oh, I don't know what's the right word, whether it's entitlement or they feel like they've gotten
11:28there when they haven't gotten there. Cause I know I would never do what pop Douglas did like
11:33as an undrafted player or a later round player to be publicly criticizing or complaining about
11:40not getting the football. And you haven't really done much in the NFL. Like I was every day,
11:47every year that I played, I was scared because I wasn't that guy. So I knew my come up was on
11:55the parcels and Belichick and being with the jets. And if you weren't doing it, they would ship your
12:00ass out of here. Forget about going to the media and going, you know what? I think I need more
12:05catches. I haven't done anything in the NFL to warrant that type of juice, but what, what Mayo
12:13needs and what all coaches that want to be disciplinarians, they need their best player to
12:17buy into that product program. And that's what Bill and Brady had together. That's what, you know,
12:22whether it was Reed and Mahomes, whoever, and Mayo needs to build that. And when you keep saying
12:28something and then 24 hours walking it back, it's tough to develop trust because people don't know
12:34where you stand. But even after Tom won his first Superbowl, you probably could talk better than I
12:38can on this. I don't think Tom would be going to the media and complaining about, we're not,
12:44we're talking about today's athlete. That's a totally different era. Yeah. And I guess maybe
12:48that's what is today's athlete. They'll complain and they got, you'll complain and you've got three
12:52catches on the year and this is your second year in the league. It's like, yeah, no, I mean,
12:56then you had to have some type of, you know, credibility and even, you know, Tom, you know,
13:02in those days that he became more vocal, uh, later on, but when he first got the first Superbowl,
13:07he was, he wasn't Tom Brady. He wasn't to go. You know what I mean? You guys ever play with a rookie
13:13who gets criticized by his head coach and then stands up there at the podium and says he has
13:18the best hands in the NFL. Can't catch a cold. Right. Exactly. Come on. Who said that? Uh,
13:24Jalen Polk, Jalen Polk talking about he's got, cause Gerard said he had, he was dealing with
13:29some, maybe it was mentally. He said, I'm not struggling mentally at all. I have the best.
13:35He came and said that to the media nationally. Yeah. Then he has the best hands in the NFL.
13:43Where's the receipts? That's my point. Show me some receipts of that one. But that's how I think
13:49today's. And that's why it has to be extremely difficult to coach because that's how today's
13:53player is. But I feel like that's the one part of the Mayo interview. I don't know if you agree
13:58yesterday where it was like, that was such a clear opportunity for Gerard to say, you gotta
14:03stop with the stupid posts and say, do you have the best way though? Curtis, he said he went on
14:08after to say it's their first amendment, right. Or whatever it is to be on social media. You know
14:14what course it is. It would be an interesting scenario to see if social media was really
14:21really like that would be a wood parcels with some of the great coaches that we know coach a
14:25certain way, how they would have handled it. Cause remember you think about like one of my favorites
14:29is I would love to play for a guy like Mike Tomlin, you know what I mean? But when he had,
14:33you know, a B out there, you know, clowning, you know, you got to handle it a certain way
14:37cause you never know. You know what I mean? Such a great coach, man. He is a, he is a,
14:41he is a hell of a coach and guys love, you know, you see him in game coaching. Yes. You see him
14:47coaching. He is, he is everyone that I know that played for Mike Tomlin love playing. I was with
14:54him in Minnesota and the guys loved them over there on defense. I just think that when you look
15:00at, and I think maybe some of these coaches take the approach, whether it's Mayo, whether it's
15:04Mike McDaniel down in Miami, the approach of like, I can't be harsh on these guys because
15:10they'll go into the tank mentally because of the whole, I don't want those guys on my team. Right.
15:17But that's everybody mental part of how, if you can't handle me getting on you and telling you
15:23how you're not playing well for coaches like that, we don't need you in crunch time. Cause
15:28we can't count on you. That's everybody. Cause you know what the player says? Well, I'm dealing
15:32with stuff at home. Be easy on me coach. I don't know if coach, that's why I said the coaches that
15:37we came up under some of them. I don't know if they can coach in today's game because too many
15:43people would be criticizing them about, Oh, they're too harsh. This person's dealing with
15:48anxiety. This person's dealing with mental health. This person's dealing. So you have to be
15:53like, Hey, I understand. Yeah. Where parcels does that. Right. And you can't say nothing now with,
16:00you know, the whole mental health thing. Cause this is a serious issue, you know, from the CT,
16:05all the different things that, you know, it's kind of like, you can't say nothing about it,
16:10but somebody got to say it. I will not. Now I've been on locker rooms and then teams where
16:16they dealing with some at home, dealing with something with your wife, you at work. Now your
16:20wife ain't loud in the building. Let's go play football. Let's win. This is, this is like really
16:26when I've had issues at home or family or anything like that, you just tired. Guess what? I'm going
16:31to work. You know, even if it's coming here, I ain't got to deal with nothing. I'm coming here
16:36to work. So you've got to be able to lock in at times. You had issues with the wife and the
16:40girlfriend, but if I did have a wife and a girl for a day of age,
16:53it's all in love. It's all, it's all, it's how it is in the locker room.
17:13Exactly. But again, this would be like, you supposed to be able to,
17:18you know, leave that stuff at home. Cause like I can't say that to anybody now though,
17:25workplace or anywhere else. You can't say that. They would have, they would have crucified.
17:30There were times when pastels was like, all right, get them out of my drill. The guys on the ground
17:34rolling around in pain, get them out of my drill. So, and, but like drag them out injured. No, no,
17:41you will move on a different part of the field, 10 yards down, down, and you will sit there and
17:45go back and again. So whoever did trainers, y'all deal with it. There were times where,
17:50where it's like, all right, if you're hurt, you can walk off the field. Like,
17:55so we don't have to burn a time out, but, but you coaches like that. I don't, because of the way
18:03that we have to deal with the feelings and the mental health of players, I don't know if in
18:10players are even built to play with guys. I think about back then, Greg, if you came to work and
18:15said, Hey, you make a million bucks, you know, back then when things were looked at a little
18:20differently and he's like, you know what? I'm going through anxiety. I ain't gonna,
18:24most people are gonna be like, man, we don't give a damn. You make a million dollars, man.
18:27You better get back on that field. We don't give a damn about your anxiety. You think
18:30you got anxiety. What about us that can't pay? You know what I mean? So it was a different
18:35mentality, but now it's like, I get it. You know, people go through stuff. You know, we all go
18:40through stuff, but when you had the workplace, you just got to change the mindset and say, Hey,
18:44Hey, I'm I get away from everything right now. I got to focus on this. You know what I mean?
18:48You got to, I mean, I don't know. It like says, I don't even want to get into it too much because
18:53hell you get canceled over something that people don't understand. You're not going to be canceled
18:58for saying that, that, that you had a different approach to work life balance. Like, I mean,
19:03that's, there's also different levels. Like if people are going through something very serious,
19:07that's one thing. But like, if, if guys aren't able to handle Monday, Monday morning, uh,
19:12highlights or the low lights, then that's part of your job and you should be able to handle.
19:16I mean, what's the Gronk was perfect example. Gronk was like, all right, I can't take no more
19:21bill. Call him here. You know what I mean? So I, and he's the greatest tight end ever played
19:25the game. I just think that for like Mayo and some of these coaches, it has to be really difficult
19:31to be able to walk that fine line. And the only thing I would say where I think Mayo went wrong,
19:36I think he tried to be too friendly with the guys and allow them too much.
19:40And that's, what's kind of leading to some of the things.
