00:00Dan, we appreciate some of your time. Good morning.
00:08Morning. How are y'all doing?
00:10We're doing great.
00:11Yeah.
00:12How'd the bye week treat you?
00:14It was good. It was good, you know.
00:17Just got a minute to recharge a little bit.
00:21Now we're back at it.
00:22Yeah, did you take in a cider mill?
00:24Maybe get some donuts and hot cider?
00:26No, I didn't get that far along.
00:29I wish I would have, but I did get to sit on the couch for a minute.
00:34So that was good.
00:35Good.
00:36I want to ask you this because it was reported yesterday that all 53 guys are back on the practice field.
00:42It's got to give you a good feeling.
00:44And the bye week, did it hit you guys at the exact right time to this point?
00:49Yeah, I mean, I think that, you know, we had a few injuries here earlier in the season than you would hope for.
00:57So, you know, I think everything happens for a reason, and it worked out for us.
01:03You know, it looks like we're going to get Frank back, and I think BB's in a good place.
01:09And so it's good, you know.
01:11And we got a chance to refresh, and now here we go.
01:14Dallas week. I don't know how much more needs to be said after last year.
01:18How excited are you and this team for this game?
01:21Yeah, I think we're all pretty excited.
01:26Let me just start here.
01:28It's the next one, you know, and that's what I told the team first and foremost.
01:32It's the most important game because it's the one right in front of us.
01:35It's the next one.
01:37But certainly this team's had our number, and we've gone out there every year, you know.
01:44And so we get to go out there again and, you know, try to get this stain out.
01:51So, man, I'm looking forward to it.
01:53The team's looking forward to it.
01:55It's been a heck of a challenge.
01:56Those guys at Dallas played a damn good game now.
01:59I mean, it wasn't perfect, but to go out to Pittsburgh and grind it out with those guys
02:03and come away with a win, they got plenty of fight over there, and they got weapons.
02:09Frank being back, I know that you were able to buy that extra week with him being down against Seattle.
02:13Two questions, then.
02:14I want to know your thoughts on the performance of the offensive line,
02:18especially the interior three without Frank against Seattle,
02:21but also what does it mean to have him back,
02:23and is this just a how much healing was done?
02:25Is it gutted out through the rest of the year?
02:29Well, all right, let me start here.
02:33I thought Graham stepped in nicely at center,
02:36and it's one of the reasons why Graham's here and why we like Graham is his versatility.
02:41You know, certainly he's a starter, left guard, and has been doing a nice job.
02:47But then to turn it over to him and have him start at center for us,
02:52I thought he stepped in nicely and really helped us out in a big way, man.
02:56He was on point with the calls and produced for us.
03:00And then I thought Yody, like I say, he's played for us in big games,
03:04and he came in, stepped in, and he was solid.
03:07You know, so that was big, and that's what we expect out of those guys.
03:14You know, look, in reference to Frank, Frank, man, as we all know,
03:19I mean, this guy, he's as throwback as they get.
03:22I mean, he will play through any injury, and he will will himself to go,
03:27and he's always going to look.
03:31As with anybody, here we go in week four, and you played a number of years.
03:35You're never going to feel like you were when you were 21 again.
03:39And they understand that.
03:41He understands it.
03:43And I know this.
03:46This was last week, actually, almost right before Seattle,
03:49and I walked down there to go talk to our trainer,
03:51and somebody punches me against the wall,
03:54and I'm not even paying attention because I'm looking at our trainer,
03:59and I keep walking, and then I get punched again, and I realize it's Frank,
04:03and he's trying to show me that his pec is great.
04:06All right, so that's his way of telling me, look how strong I am.
04:10It's good.
04:11It's healed.
04:13Listen, he's in a good mindset.
04:15He's ready, and he wants to go.
04:18We're talking to Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
04:20Tim Patrick looked like he's getting more involved.
04:23He's now coming out of the bye week.
04:24Is he what you were looking for in that receiver room,
04:27that outside guy or that third receiver?
04:30I brought this up before.
04:33I think he fits what we're about.
04:35Yeah, I think he brings a skill set, demeanor, the size,
04:43everything that is something we don't have in there.
04:47And, you know, the mindset of the way he is, he competes, he grinds on it,
04:53he's tough, he's physical, but he's got this big catch radius.
04:57He's kind of a sneaky run after catch guy.
05:02And, man, I think there's room here to really, you know,
05:07to expand a little bit with him.
05:09We all do on offense.
05:11And so I think this guy is going to help us,
05:14and I think he's beginning to help us.
05:16So we're excited about him.
05:18Look, we're excited about Allen Robinson, too.
05:20You know, and I know he hasn't gotten the opportunities yet,
05:23but we know we're going to need him.
05:25And he's going to the games right now, and it's going to come up.
05:28It's going to come up, but both of those guys really fit us.
05:31Terryon Arnold, I think he's performed well,
05:34but he's been penalized a lot in the first four games, like eight times.
05:39How concerning is that?
05:41And is that something that can be tweaked, adjusted throughout the bye week?
05:47Do you expect that to improve?
05:50Yeah, we do.
05:51We do.
05:52It's something we talked about.
05:53As a matter of fact, you know, our big practice was yesterday,
05:57our big first down full pad practice a little longer,
06:01and we had one-on-ones in there, competitive.
06:04And that's what those are for, man.
06:07Those are to work your craft and really hone in on your skill, man,
06:10get better at it.
06:11And where can I improve?
06:14And that's one of the areas.
06:15That's why we do one-on-ones, man.
06:17We're playing man coverage,
06:18and how can you get in position to make a play
06:23and make a play on the ball without drawing a flag, you know,
06:26and without it being – and so much of it, too,
06:29is getting crafty with it, right?
06:33I mean, there's going to be this give and take that goes down if you're
06:37competing with a receiver, but you've got to compete for the ball,
06:40and then you just – you've got to get to where you don't – you may be
06:45battling and you may be fighting, but you don't see it all the time
06:49because you're pretty efficient with it, with how you use your hands.
06:54So, look, it's a point of emphasis, and he's going to be fine.
06:58He just keeps working through it, and he knows what it is,
07:02but we also need him to continue to compete
07:05and challenge on the perimeter.
07:07Lions head coach Dan Campbell,
07:08you guys are playing the Cowboys this week,
07:10America's Game of the Week on Fox.
07:12I know that's their moniker, but we talk about you guys like
07:15you're America's team.
07:16You're tough.
07:17You're likable.
07:18You're in prime time.
07:19Do you get that sense that you guys are America's team?
07:23Well, I know I like us, so I don't know if that counts for anything.
07:29But, you know, we – listen, we like playing in big games,
07:36and this will be a big game.
07:39It's a team that's had our number on the road,
07:42and it'll be the prime time game, 425, which I've said before,
07:45I love afternoon prime time games.
07:48Those are better than night games in my opinion
07:50because you can get to bed late at night.
07:53But we're excited about this.
07:57So, you know, this is going to be a good one for us.
08:01Tell me if this is something or nothing,
08:04because you guys obviously were able to recover after a loss to Tampa,
08:08but teams that have played you, and whether it's the mindset of,
08:12hey, we're going to bite your kneecaps, we're going to take another one off,
08:15it's guys like Frank that are just a – it's the mentality,
08:19it's the culture that you've set.
08:21When you play a team, you don't just hand them one loss,
08:23you hand them two because they have been 0-4 after losses to the Detroit Lions.
08:30Is it something or nothing?
08:32Yeah, I don't know if you can say it.
08:35I know that it's – that's a thing.
08:37I've been told that, you know, just with what it is this season.
08:43And, you know, like I said yesterday, we play a certain style of ball,
08:48and that's what we expect when we go into games.
08:51And no matter what happens, you know, you want to feel like you laid it out there
08:59and you want your opponents to feel like, man, they were in –
09:02that's one of those, you know, it's a slobber knocker.
09:08There's a good way to put it.
09:10And you got some serious body blows that you had to endure
09:15for a long period of time, for about three hours.
09:17And as long as we're doing that, we feel like most of the time
09:21we're going to come away with a win.
09:23But if you don't, well, you gave them hell trying to do it.
09:26So that's really all I can say about it.
09:30Points for slobber knocker.
09:32It sounded like you got a laugh in the background there.
09:34Tigers.
09:36I want to ask you about the Tigers because, you know,
09:38you've seen what this city has done to rally around your football team.
09:41I know you've talked about seeing what the Tigers have done for the city as well.
09:45What have you made of what they've done?
09:47And a Hail Mary here.
09:48Any chance we see Dan Campbell out at Comerica Park one of the next couple days?
09:52Man, that would be awesome.
09:53It would.
09:54But, no, you're not going to see me.
09:55I just – I can't.
09:57I got too much going on.
09:58But I'm telling you what I am.
10:00I back these guys up.
10:02And I am rooting for them hard because I just think it's awesome.
10:07And, you know, I go back to this.
10:10So many people, you know, they were written off.
10:13And I just remember in the off season listening to it, you know,
10:17and what's wrong with the Tigers.
10:19And these guys, they don't know what they're doing.
10:22And why aren't they trading this guy and all the crap.
10:25And I just know when you're in this profession, man, just let it play out.
10:29And those guys are going to work it.
10:31And they're trying to get better.
10:32They're trying to improve.
10:33And here they are, man, the underdogs that have just continued to battle
10:36and fight and just won't go away.
10:39And I am rooting hard for these guys, man.
10:41I hope they take it all away.
10:43Yeah, it's great for the city.
10:44Everybody's excited, just as excited as they were for the playoff run
10:47that you guys had last year.
10:48Now it's the baseball season,
10:50and it's a beautiful time to be a Detroit sports fan.
10:52I want to ask you about one more guy.
10:54You started the clock on Christian Mahogany.
10:56He's a rookie.
10:58What do you need to see from him in the next 21 days, now 20,
11:02that would allow you to keep him up
11:05and be a part of this team moving forward this year?
11:09Yeah, I think improvement.
11:10We need to see improvement, and I think it needs to happen every day.
11:15And we're not talking about leaps and bounds,
11:17but we need to feel like, look, yesterday was his first day to go,
11:20and he looked like he hasn't practiced, which he should because he hasn't.
11:25But that's all we expect, man, is just stack days together
11:31and get a little bit better and show the improvement,
11:34show that you are gaining traction.
11:36I think as long as he does that, it's going to be hard not to want to
11:39put him on the roster, but we'll see.
11:42Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
11:44We'll check in again next week.
11:45Good luck this week against the Cowboys.
11:47All right. Appreciate it. Take care.
11:50It's 97-1.
