00:00You said it dibs an hour and a half, that's when inactives officially come out and I can
00:09confirm Charverius Ward inactive tonight for the 49ers in Seattle along with Josh Dobbs,
00:15the emergency third quarterback, tight end Brayden Willis, linebacker Demetrius Flanagan
00:19Falls, offensive lineman Ben Bartsch, kicker Jake Moody, no surprise there, defensive tackle
00:24Jordan Elliott as well, but the big one, Charverius Ward out tonight.
00:27There it is.
00:28Yep.
00:29Okay.
00:30So the great matchups that we've seen through the years between Charverius Ward and DK Metcalf
00:35will not happen tonight.
00:37So Demo, let's see it, man.
00:39You step up.
00:40You are the number one guy.
00:41And also I would imagine that Renardo Green, the rookie, is going to have to have a role
00:47and I'm really looking at the youth in the defensive backfield of this football game
00:52with Hufanga out and Charverius Ward out.
00:55It does mean I would think on some level elevated roles tonight for Malik Mustafa and
01:00Renardo Green and hey, draft class, chop, chop.
01:04Let's see it.
01:05Dude.
01:06And that's exactly what I was thinking.
01:07You took the words right out of my mouth.
01:08It's the youth movement.
01:09You've got Jair Brown drafted last year, Malik Mustafa this year, Renardo Green this year,
01:16Diamondo Lenore drafted in 2021.
01:19He's now the OG in that group and you throw in Isaac Yadim, who is a bit of a veteran
01:24and he's been, I know it's been a bit of a struggle, but now he steps up into probably
01:31the Charverius Ward role.
01:33So you're going to have, you know, Demo and Yadim and you're going to have the young guys
01:37all going to have to contribute here against a very good receiving core and a physical
01:43receiving core.
01:44Yeah, it's a good core.
01:45So the youngsters are going to be tested for their, a lot of these guys first game up there
01:48in Seattle too.
01:49I even like their third receiver, if you'd even call him that, maybe he's their number
01:53two now.
01:55Tyler Lockett's been around for a while, but Jackson Smith and Jigba is a, he's a player.
02:00He's a player.
02:01So what this says to me is the 49ers are going to need to lean also on their defensive philosophy
02:07and their philosophy is that it starts with the pass rush and the play of your defensive
02:13backs is elevated because of the speed of the game that's created by your pass rush.
02:19And Nick Bosa, I would argue this year has played really good football, but he hasn't
02:23been necessarily the individual game record that people want him to be.
02:27To me, sometimes I look at what he does, knowing the way offenses really account for him.
02:33And I look at what that sets up for other players.
02:35And are those players making good on those opportunities?
02:39If that much energy is going to be focused on Nick Bosa, you're going to need one-on-one
02:43wins from guys like Leonard Floyd and the others who will be rotating in.
02:48We'll see if Sam Oh is going to get in there and, and do some things.
02:52And so that group is going to have to do really well because if Gino Smith gets a lot
02:57of time with that receiving core and now you're number one corner out, oof, this could be
03:04a game where, uh, where, where the scoring needs to be high.
03:08And if you add in the fact that Kenneth Walker, the third is a very good running back and
03:12the 49er run defense has not been sparkly.
03:16You're setting up for a tough night defensively, unless like you said, some of the guys up
03:20front can wreck the game.
03:22The one bit of good news is Seattle's offensive line is not good.
03:26They've got a lot of starters who are out due to injury, old friend, Lake and Tomlinson
03:30will be out there at left guard and he's the veteran and kind of an aging veteran and somebody
03:35that there isn't a lot of faith in among Seattle people that I've talked to.
03:39So it's an offensive line that can be had by an aggressive front.
03:43Yeah.
03:44But, um, we felt that way the last handful of weeks felt that way against the Rams felt
03:49that way against the Cardinals and you know, they were okay in those games, but they weren't
03:55great.
03:56They didn't wreck the game.
03:57This one feels a little scary.
03:58Now we'll say this from the other angle.
04:00The other angle is Mooney.
04:01Ward has not played very good football this year, so I'm not saying I'd rather have him
04:05out of the game, but I feel like you've sort of made this point as have others with regard
04:12to who Funga who's still coming back from injury did not quite play great and have his
04:18legs underneath him kind of a thing.
04:20And so when he got hurt and it was like, oh, he's going to be out for a little while.
04:24There were some people that went, you know what?
04:26I'm not sure that right now that their lineup isn't better without him.
04:30I don't feel that way about Mooney Ward, but I will say I wasn't feeling good about the
04:36matchup between him and DK Metcalf anyway with the way he's played this year.
04:41Yes.
04:42If it's his replacement, if it's Isaac Adam who steps up now, he's a guy who has had at
04:48times some difficulty in coverage and I, I do like what I've seen from Jair Brown and
04:53Malik Mustafa has made some plays, but he's very green and very new.
04:57And same thing with Renardo Green, who, if you're going to elevate him now into a more
05:01pertinent or important role, then you start to really look at young players and it's kind
05:06of a big ask when you've got two rookies in a second year guy back there and you're asking
05:11them to now come in and, and anchor a secondary.
05:14And again, everything is made better by a pass rush that gets after a quarterback and
05:18makes a quarterback uncomfortable.
05:21And I think it, it has to be players other than Nick Bosa because you made a good point
05:26a little bit ago about the fact that every single snap he's getting doubled or he's getting
05:31singled and chipped.
05:32There's never a snap where it's just him against the left tackle count for him.
05:35For sure.
05:36I'd like to see the Niners move them around a little bit more.
05:38I haven't seen a bunch of that this year.
05:41Put him over the right tackle sometimes at nine.
05:43I'm thinking you want to put him inside the, the a gap and over the car.
05:48Yeah, exactly.
05:49But go ahead and flop them to the other side sometimes and see if you can't exploit some
05:52of those matches.
05:53Yeah.
05:54Well, and, and, and then there's this stat, uh, the 49er secondary, right?
05:58Just the, the, the corners and the safeties have a sum total of interceptions this year.
06:06Yeah.
06:07None.
06:08None.
06:09So you've got a guy who's coming down and is supposed to be their number one guy and
06:12you're going against the guy who has passed for more yards than anybody in the NFL.
06:16So that's a little circumstantial too, but, uh, this is an X's and O's matchup that I
06:22will admit a little bit scary.
06:24That's a little bit scary to, uh, to not get Mooney Ward out there tonight.
06:27Uh, Matt in Seattle wants to weigh in on that.
06:30Hi Matt.
06:31Thank you for calling the show.
06:32I just want to say real quick, you killed it with Saucy yesterday with suit on the radios.
06:38I don't want to give you props, but I was kind of thinking when you broke down the news
06:41of Mooney Ward being out at first, I was worried because I was thinking DK Metcalf is going
06:45to go wild.
06:46But then I thought about it from a fan perspective, watching the game, I started to think what's
06:51a better way to get these young guys pumped up for a big game where it's a, not a big
06:57must win, but they got to show up on a Thursday night with a bright light here with, I guess
07:03a 12th man.
07:04I just feel like from a fan perspective, they're going to really hopefully ride to the occasion
07:09and hopefully that Bosa and our boys can really step up and just wanted to say that I'm looking
07:14forward more to Mooney Ward out and hopefully Matthew Wright can step up tonight as well.
07:22Yeah, that's it.
07:23You know what?
07:24We, thanks Matt.
07:25Uh, Matthew Wright.
07:26Thank you for the kind words.
07:27Appreciate that.
07:28For those who don't know, even know who Matthew Wright is, that's the Niners kicker now for
07:30the next handful of weeks.
07:32And we haven't even brought up the fact that I don't know what to expect from Matthew Wright.
07:36He's been in the NFL before and his numbers are fine.
07:39But whenever you hand it over to somebody who was sitting on the street, especially
07:43on a Thursday night primetime game and the locker room is running around going, this
07:47is a must win or we're treating it that way.
07:50And this guy walks in and it's like, dude, don't miss a big kick.
07:54Like that's a, that's a lot.
07:55That's a lot on his shoulders.
07:56That's what kickers do.
07:57And he's a pro.
07:58So I'm not terribly worried about it, but it's an unknown.
08:02Yes.
08:03It's a total unknown.
08:04If the number of teams you've been on is greater than the number of years you've been in the
08:08league, you're probably a journeyman.
08:10Is that true?
08:11I just had to Google the stats because I, to be honest, I was doing the thing with softy
08:16last night in Seattle and I couldn't remember his name.
08:19I knew that Jake Moody was out and I said, yeah, they got a new kicker coming in.
08:22He's going to be asked to kick and he's got a couple of names.
08:26Couldn't remember it.
08:27It would be super weird if they brought him in to do something else.
08:29Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Kansas city or Pittsburgh again in Carolina.
08:34So this would be, he brought him back.
08:35So they liked him.
08:36Yeah.
08:37This would be his fifth team and this is year five.
08:39So okay.
08:40I counted Pittsburgh twice.
08:41He was on, that's only one team really, but he's never, he's never done enough to stick
08:45and stay.
08:46But I, I also think he's only had what, maybe 40 kicks in his career.
08:51Something like 40 of 47, 40, 47, six of nine from 50 and beyond.
08:56That doesn't sound terrible.
08:57No.
08:58And uh, 11 of 14 from 40 to 49.
09:01So 17 of 23 from beyond 40.
09:04That's not great.
09:0517 of 23 from 40 and beyond.
09:09Yeah.
09:10Yeah.
09:11So there's a reason why he is an available kicker.
09:15Like you said, he hasn't latched onto a team.
09:17He's no Caymmi Fairbairn.
09:19That's for sure.
09:20He is not Caymmi Fairbairn.
09:22I like to throw that out there.
09:23Good name.
09:24Is he your kicker?
09:25No, I've got a Cincinnati bum, Evan McPherson, captain, captain PAT, whatever, he's actually
09:33been good.
09:34He's been good.
09:35Yeah.
09:36They don't, they don't.
09:37It's better than having one of these rooks, right?
09:38Like the Ram guy and the Packer guy.
09:39Well, you know what?
09:40Uh, straggling.
09:41I don't want this to turn into a fantasy show, but there's one point that should be made
09:45here because I know a lot of people who are like the kickers, what are we doing with the
09:49kick?
09:50You're all going to make the 58 yarders and 60 yarders are now just like garden variety.
09:57These kickers are winning games.
09:59You got kickers going out there and getting 20 points in a fantasy game.
10:03They're going to have to change the numbers.
10:05They're going to have to like, like a 50 yard field goal being five points.
10:09That's too much.
10:10Agreed.
10:11It's too.
10:12It's like almost like your team's getting a touchdown.
10:13And is it 60 yard or six?
10:15Yes.
10:16It's like a touchdown.
10:18And it's way easier than an actual touchdown.
10:21I would argue.
10:22Yeah.
10:23You're the only one who has the opportunity to kick it and you all can do it now.
10:26They just need to scale it back.
10:28Yeah.
10:29Like 50 should be four points.
10:3040 should be three.
10:32That's my prediction.
10:33Yeah.
10:34My prediction is people are going to start either removing kicker from the game entirely
10:36or they're going to reboot the scoring or instead of half point PPR, it's half point
10:41PAT.
10:42Oh, that's fun.
10:43You know, whatever.
10:44Look at you.
10:45Good ideas.
10:46All right.
10:47We're live on the game.

11:00I will not buy Matt's point that the absence of Charverius Ward and if you're just joining
11:06us, he is inactive tonight.
11:07I will not buy that.
11:09That makes this like more fun and more fiery now for the fans.
11:14I get where he's coming from.
11:17And he said, look, you hope that things like this galvanize the team, bring them together,
11:24all of that.
11:25They're going to treat it like a must win.
11:27And you hope that that leads to a good performance.
11:30The funny thing is, I don't have any worries whatsoever that the 49ers are going to come
11:35out and look good.
11:37My worry is that they stay looking good because they've come out and looked good in all of
11:42the games.
11:43Maybe not Minnesota right away, but that was a Nick and tuck game, you know, a nip and
11:47tuck.
11:48How did it go anyway?
11:49Game for the whole, the whole day.
11:52And Minnesota now we know is a real opponent and they're very good.
11:56So that one doesn't hurt that much.
11:59But these, this, this idea that we've moved forward with, that they came out against the
12:03Rams and Cardinals and laid eggs.
12:05They didn't, they just didn't finish.
12:08They were absolutely unbelievably bad in so many different aspects in the fourth quarters
12:14of these football games.
12:16So I don't need them to win one for the Gipper.
12:19I just need them to do what they normally do for four full quarters.
12:23That's all they need to do.
12:25It would be nice.
12:26That would be good.
12:27Well, and you know, you look at the Ram game and you got outscored by 10 in the second
12:32half, which, you know, you, you had outscored the jets and the opener by four.
12:38You were even up against the Vikings in the second half and even against the Patriots
12:42in the second half.
12:43And of course, Arizona, you didn't score and you gave up 14.
12:46So the second half has been a giant issue in the fourth quarter to an even greater extent
12:52because the fourth quarter is more important.
12:54So I like that the way you put it, not worried about them coming out and looking good Shanahan
12:59on the script, the offense usually looks good.
13:02I know they went three and out last week.
13:04I think there are, they have the fewest three and outs this year on the opening drive or
13:08even throughout the totality of the game.
13:11I think like, how are you feeling if, if the fourth quarter starts, Seattle's got the ball
13:17at their own 14 yard line and the Niners are up 24 to 14, how are you feeling?
13:23Feel good.
13:24Do you?
13:25This can't keep happening.
13:26Yeah, I can.
13:27It's allowed to.
13:29You want me to make you feel bad about it?
13:31Because I can.
13:32Um, no, not quite yet.
13:34Okay.
13:35You let me know.
13:36You let me know when you want me to.
13:37Not quite yet.
13:38Cause I.
13:39Well, no.
13:40Okay.
13:41This is, this is the visual for me with Mooney ward out.
13:44I am not now worried about the Niners.
13:47I am worried about the Niners when the Seahawks are down 10 and spreading them out.
13:53I'm worried about Gino Smith in the fourth quarter with DK and Tyler and Smith and Jigba
14:01and Kenneth Walker and Zach Charbonnet and all of these weapons who are athletic and
14:06they can run and they're fast.
14:09And if the Niners are tired and in the fourth quarter with a 10 point lead, like I'm not
14:14comfortable, not comfortable at all.
14:17That's a team that is shown like if you watch the second half of that game against the Lions
14:21between the Seahawks and Lions, bing, bing, bing pinball game, pinball game.
14:26So I think tonight the best defense for the 49ers is their offense.
14:34There is no, we're up 10.
14:36So let's be conservative and kick field goals.
14:40If you're up 10, you better get the ball and get up 17.
14:45And if you're up 17, you better get the ball and get up 24 because I, Seahawks are gonna,
14:51they're gonna make a run.
14:52They're going to make a run at you in the second half.
14:54Well, every team has, and you know, both these teams are on a short week.
14:58So based on the 49ers having played in a hundred degree heat and they had to travel, the fatigue
15:07is more likely to be something that affects them as opposed to Seattle that didn't have
15:11to play in a hundred degree heat and didn't have to travel.
15:13So just looking at that one metric, not even a metric, but that one reality, the 49ers
15:20hopefully were able to hydrate and rest as much as possible knowing that they're going
15:25in on a short week on the road.
