00:00President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is on a trip to the ASEAN Summit.
00:05This was a chance for the President to show the Philippines to different leaders of the countries
00:11and even to the investors who are heading to the Philippines.
00:14But what is the importance of these trips of the President for the country?
00:18That is what Professor Antonio Contreras will examine in Punto de Vista, Professor.
00:31Thank you very much.
00:34At present, our President, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is in Laos
00:39and he is on a trip to the ASEAN Summit.
00:43And many are asking, does the President really need to travel?
00:48And not only President Marcos is involved in that, any President.
00:52What is the importance of those trips?
00:57Does that have a purpose?
01:00Isn't that just an expense?
01:03You know, there are many kinds of visits or visits of a Head of State or a Head of Government.
01:09We have what we call a State Visit, where this is a formal visit of a Head of State
01:16and this is a form of invitation to him to travel to a host country.
01:24And the purpose of the State Visits is to strengthen the relationship between the Philippines
01:30and whoever invited the President.
01:35Usually, the State Visits are more formal, high-level discussions and cultural exchanges.
01:43There are also what we call Official Visits, these are less formal.
01:48This is usually an invitation given by the Head of Government rather than the Head of State
01:54because in other countries, the Head of State is the Prime Minister and the Head of State is the King.
02:00In the Philippines, the President is also the Head of State, he is the Head of Government.
02:05So usually, the Official Visits have working meetings to discuss specific issues
02:12like economic cooperation, security concerns, regional partnerships.
02:19We also have what we call Working Visits.
02:21These are small, focused trips to discuss government business.
02:28This includes attending multilateral meetings like the ASEAN that the President is holding now.
02:34He will attend the UN General Assembly, signing agreements, discussing specific policy issues with other leaders.
02:44Sometimes, the President also attends summits like the ASEAN, APEC, and UN.
02:54Aside from that, the President also travels inside the country to travel to different places
03:01especially if this is after graduation.
03:06I would like to enumerate to you the different kinds of President's visits
03:10to other countries and to us.
03:13This is a part of the President's job.
03:16If we count the benefits he brings to us, he brings a lot of investments.
03:23I am not just saying this to President Marcos.
03:26Anyone who travels to other countries, his goal is to introduce our country.
03:34We should have partnerships and agreements.
03:37He brings goodwill from other countries.
03:43This includes investments in our development.
03:46This is specific to what happened in China.
03:49What the President did is he expanded our alliance.
03:55Not just in America or the United States, but he expanded it.
04:00He expanded it to Japan, Australia, and South Korea.
04:08This is like a confidence building.
04:12He expanded our friendship.
04:21This is a lesson.
04:24This is not just an expense.
04:26This is not just a trick.
04:27We cannot just leave the President in Malacanang.
04:33He always gives orders.
04:35Times are different now.
04:37It is important to have partnerships.
04:40Our President visits other countries to bring goodwill from other leaders.
04:51He also brings goodwill from Filipinos all over the world.
04:56This is just a lesson.
04:58Let's not put too much color on this.
05:00President Marcos is not just a President.
05:03He is the President of the country.
05:05This is his job.
05:07Traveling is part of his job.
05:10This is how he brings goodwill to the country.
05:15Of course, we need expenses.
05:18It is important that the expenses are worth it.
05:22We are not just wasting money.
05:25We are not just investing.
05:28We are bringing goodwill from other countries.
05:32That is my point of view for today.
05:35Thank you very much.
05:37I will see you in the studio.
05:39Thank you very much, Professor Antonio Contreras.
