00:00Updates on the activity of the Taal and Canlaon Volcanoes.
00:03We are joined by the PHIVOLCS Director, Dr. Teresito Bacolcol.
00:09Dr. Bacolcol, good afternoon.
00:13Yes, good afternoon to you, ma'am and sir.
00:15The Taal Volcano had a phreatic eruption on Wednesday.
00:20What is the detail of this, sir?
00:23Okay, you're right.
00:24The Taal Volcano had a phreatic eruption on Wednesday, October 9, and it reached 600 meters.
00:31But yesterday, the plume of the phreatic eruption was higher.
00:36Between 721 to 727 yesterday, we had a new phreatic eruption and it reached 2,800 meters.
00:48Director, right now, the Taal Volcano is still at Alert Level 1.
00:52Can you explain to us what are the possible hazards under Alert Level 1 of a volcano?
01:00Okay, so when we say it's at Alert Level 1, it means it's at a low level of unrest.
01:07So, different volcanoes have different hazards at different levels.
01:15If you talk about Taal, at Alert Level 1, the possible hazards would be the toxic volcanic gases that can be spread by humans and can affect our health.
01:28There can also be a saline phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruptions that we have seen from the past few days.
01:36If there is a big phreatic eruption or phreatomagmatic eruption, it can bring abo.
01:44And if we bring a lot of abo, like volcanic gases, it can also have an effect on our health.
01:52Director, why does Taal seem to be stopping its activity in the past few months?
01:58Is this the first time that Taal is showing this kind of abnormal activities or is this normal?
02:07Okay, so this is not the first time that phreatic eruptions and phreatomagmatic eruptions have happened.
02:16Right after the volcano erupted last 2020, there were phreatic and phreatomagmatic events that were also recorded in the Taal volcano.
02:25In fact, there were 5 phreatomagmatic eruptions in 2021 and 10 times again in 2022.
02:33This is normal because the Taal volcano has water.
02:37Once this water comes into contact or interacts with hot volcanic materials like hot volcanic rocks or hot volcanic gases, there can be phreatic eruptions.
02:51If the water comes into contact with magma, there can be phreatomagmatic eruptions.
02:59So again, this is normal for the Taal volcano.
03:02If the alert level is zero, there can be phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruptions.
03:08Dr. Bacolchol, here in the volcano Canlaon, what are the details of its activity after the eruption of Asupre last night,
03:17considered as a minor eruption?
03:22Now, for Canlaon volcano, its degassing or steaming activity is still ongoing.
03:27Yesterday, we recorded a steaming activity that reached 750 meters.
03:34This is not considered an eruption.
03:36The steaming activity is not considered as an eruption.
03:39It signals volcanic activity, but again, this is not an eruption.
03:45What are the possible activities that PHIVOC is looking at in the volcano Canlaon?
03:54Okay, so Canlaon volcano is now on alert level 2, meaning there is a moderate level of unrest.
03:59So there are several things that could happen.
04:02Our volcanic earthquakes could increase.
04:07For the past 24 hours, we recorded 19 volcanic earthquakes.
04:11If there are more, and if the sulfur dioxide emission increases,
04:16and if the volcanic eruptions continue,
04:20then we may raise the alert level from alert level 2 to alert level 3.
04:28Director, maybe a message and a reminder to our fellow countrymen who are near the volcanoes Taal and Canlaon.
04:36Again, we call on our fellow countrymen who live around Taal volcano and Canlaon volcano to be vigilant.
04:43And they should follow the announcements of the LGUs.
04:54Okay, Director Bacol Col is now on the line.
04:59Thank you very much for your time.
05:01PHIVOC's Director, Dr. Teresito Bacol Col.
