Saturday brings a spell of unseasonably windy weather and the risk of thunderstorms and possible flooding. Sunday may not be as windy but further heavy showers are likely. Clare Nasir has the details.

00:00Hello there and welcome to your weekend forecast issued this Thursday the 8th of
00:04August. I split the headline into two, the northern half of the UK and the
00:09southern half. For the north, that's Scotland's Northern Ireland and also
00:13Northern England, we will see an increasing threat of thundery rain as we
00:17head through Saturday with the risk of flooding. We've already seen quite a lot
00:21of flooding across Scotland through the last few days and this will exacerbate
00:25the situation. The river levels are high, they're swollen, we've seen a lot of
00:29surface water particularly on that rain track between Glasgow and Edinburgh and
00:33this is not going to help. Feeling cooler particularly across the north of
00:36Scotland where we will see that cloud persisting. Further south, the biggest
00:42issue, the biggest impact will be strong winds on Saturday. We could see gusts up
00:47to 50 miles an hour in places. Obviously gale force winds causing some choppy
00:51seas and then come Sunday it's a case of sunshine and showers although currently
00:55we're looking at more showery rain across northern England and North Wales.
00:59So this is an unseasonably deep area of low pressure which is tracking across
01:03the UK through Friday into Saturday. The rain warning remains in force through
01:08Friday night before it eases and then on Saturday, thunderstorms in the north,
01:12winds in the south. Gusts as I said could actually be damaging particularly across
01:17coastal regions but even inland we could see gales. These thunderstorms here will
01:21be slow-moving, you're in the centre of the low so if you catch some thundery
01:25rain and it lasts a while again the risk of a flooding here. So first thing
01:30on Saturday morning, you can see where the low is, the strongest winds always
01:34across England and Wales, some damaging gusts along the coast, along the south
01:39coast, the west coast as well, west Wales, northwest England but even inland.
01:43And then it's this swathe of showery rain which will be slow-moving across
01:48Scotland extending down towards Cumbria as well as Northumberland and towards
01:52Northern Ireland as well. So the risk of some localised flooding here and a
01:58blustery end to the day across the south. Some sunshine coming through here and
02:02also some heavy showers. Temperatures then, well if you catch some sunshine 22-23
02:07degrees Celsius although feeling fresh in that wind. A similar situation for
02:12Northern Ireland later we could see some brighter weather just sort of poking its
02:15head through the southwest of Scotland. Elsewhere though those showers will be
02:19slow-moving and they will rumble on through Saturday into Sunday. So a
02:24reminder of where our weather warnings are for the latter part of Saturday. This
02:28area of low pressure here extends towards Scandinavia but as you can see
02:33there's a trough extension down towards Ireland and what that means this is
02:37where we're likely to see the unsettled weather remain through Sunday. Some
02:42uncertainty at the moment with the distribution of this showery rain. It
02:46could be further south. To be honest wherever you are you're never going to
02:50be too far away from those showers. Always more clouds across the north of
02:54Scotland. A stronger wind here feeling cool under that cloud and that showery
02:58rain. You can see here stronger winds persist across England and Wales in
03:03between sunshine and showers and then temperatures through Sunday. Typically
03:07coming in I'd say the low 20s, the high teens. However much cooler across central
03:14and northern areas of Scotland where it's going to feel autumnal. So all in
03:18all the weekend is looking unsettled. Rain or showers, stronger spells of wind
03:24as well. Keep it up to date with the forecast and also with the warning zones.
03:29Make sure you take extra care if you are traveling or doing anything outside
03:33through the weekend. Obviously we'll keep you up to date on all our social media
03:37channels. Bye bye.
