18 August - National weather forecast presented by Aidan McGivern.
Transcript
00:00Hello. The very lively weather from the hit and miss of intense thunderstorms of recent
00:05days is now clearing away. And in its wake, more typical weather for the UK. Low pressure
00:12from the Atlantic arriving, swinging a weather front into much of northern and western UK,
00:19bringing a lot of cloud cover and some outbreaks of rain. Those outbreaks of rain on the showery
00:25side I think with some heavy bursts over the Pennines perhaps into southern Scotland by
00:31the end of the afternoon. But otherwise, it's light to moderate. It's steady over the hills
00:36but on and off elsewhere. Still the potential for one or two showers in East Anglia and
00:41the South East but not on the same scale as recent days. And with some sunshine away from
00:45the showers, 26 Celsius is possible. Feeling cooler elsewhere with a fresh breeze and temperatures
00:51of 19 Celsius in Scotland, 21-22 across northern England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Now those
00:58outbreaks of rain, a few heavy bursts across parts of Scotland into the evening as well
01:03as parts of the Midlands and South West. They do travel South Eastwards and turning more
01:09showery really by the end of the night. Clear spells replace the rain across Scotland, Northern
01:15Ireland, much of northern and western England as well as Wales and temperatures into the
01:19double figures but not as warm as recent nights. 17-18 Celsius possible in the South East
01:26first thing Friday. And here there could be some sharp showers, perhaps even a rumble
01:30of thunder across East Anglia during the morning as the showery rain gets out of the way. Eventually
01:37it moves through so that by late morning skies are brightening across much of the southern
01:41half of the UK. Sunny spells but further showers affect northern England, Scotland and Northern
01:45Ireland. Quite a few showers coming along on a brisk southwesterly breeze and also we're
01:52going to see some heavy downpours towards the far north west. But on the whole it is
01:57looking like the south will stay dry and sunny spells will lead to 26 or 25 Celsius in the
02:05south, high teens, low twenties further north. Then into Friday evening the winds start to
02:11pick up across western Scotland, a blustery night to come here with the risk of gales
02:15for exposed coasts of western Scotland and some longer spells of rain coming along for
02:20the start of weekend here. But clear spells elsewhere and a fine start to the weekend
02:25for southern parts of the UK where it will stay largely dry on Saturday. A dry start
02:30for many on Sunday before further rain comes along later.
