00:00:30There are three Pacific challengers in Rugby World Cup, the Maori Haka, the Moa from Manusamoa
00:00:40and the Sipi Taos.
00:00:41We're looking at the Scottish team and they've made all up eight changes from the team which
00:00:45bumped the Ivory Coast including five in the forwards and they've chosen this team especially
00:00:49for the type of physical encounter they're expecting.
00:00:52They've brought in Scott Hastings and Ian Jardine in the midfield to the tough tacklers
00:00:57there.
00:00:58Madison the halfback is a much sturdier player than Redpath, so they've brought in a tough
00:01:02team to meet these players.
00:01:04Three changes in the Tongan team, all in force.
00:01:06Fial Vunipola number two is in his hooker in place of Falolisi Masila.
00:01:11Paovalu Latukefu comes in for Falamani Mafi and Inoki Apiaki is in for the injured, sorry
00:01:17the suspended, Faleti Mahoni.
00:01:23There are the reserves for the two teams.
00:01:28Cameron Glasgow the 29-year-old yet to win a cap.
00:01:30He'll be desperately hoping that he can get on in some way, shape or form at the Rugby
00:01:34World Cup.
00:01:57So all is in readiness and a pretty good crowd in attendance here at Loftus Crossroad.
00:02:03Waiting for the time to tick over.
00:02:06Tonight's referee is the 42-year-old Australian Barry Liscombe-Sidney, he's the leading referee
00:02:12in Australia.
00:02:13He's the number one man there.
00:02:14The touch judges today will be Wayne Erickson and Nobby Saito from Japan.
00:02:21There's the kick-off and straight away Scotland in the blue have possession through Dottie
00:02:25Weir and Patterson gets it away to Craig Chalmers.
00:02:28Here's the first one way up high but the whistle's gone from referee Liske from Australia and
00:02:34it looks like an early penalty just seconds into the game.
00:02:38Here's Ian Morrison, he may have been obstructed trying to get through onto the Tongan catchers
00:02:43and within just a matter of 10 seconds there's an early chance for Gavin Hastings to put
00:02:49points on the board.
00:02:50Here's former All Black captain Jock Hobbs.
00:02:52What a very good beginning from Scotland, an outstanding take from Weir from the kick-off
00:02:57which allowed Chalmers to put this in the air but a late tackle we can see there from
00:03:01Fenu Kitau and therefore Scotland has this opportunity to put points on the board.
00:03:17Gavin Hastings sends it through, you don't give Gavin Hastings a second chance and Scotland
00:03:23are in the lead after less than a minute's play.
00:03:32I'm sure the Tongans will be highly charged again but they must make sure in the early
00:03:36moments of this game that they keep their discipline.
00:03:40If Gavin Hastings, they'll lose points quickly.
00:03:47Well there's Mana Otai getting a similar good fortune from the kick-off going the other
00:03:53direction but I think he's put his foot just into touch.
00:04:01Tonga are desperately hoping that this game can work out for them.
00:04:08Willie Losei playing at block, remember, right at the back there, you see Enoki Apeaki, the
00:04:13very tall fellow right at the back, number six, he's going towards Apeaki, he's marking
00:04:20Wainwright.
00:04:26Lineouts will be a big challenge for the Tongan team, they are much shorter throughout the
00:04:29line-out, Scotland are much bigger so they're going to have to use variations in the line-out
00:04:33in order to achieve ball from that sector.
00:04:38What about at scrum time, Jock, how's that pan out?
00:04:41Pretty similar weights I think, possibly Tonga have an advantage in the front row.
00:04:49Two half-backs to the left is Manu Bunipola, to the right, number nine, is Derek Patterson
00:04:54and the usual tussle in the first scrum for physical ascendancy, Fuka Fuka is on the near
00:05:03side and the Tongan front row was free-kicked and Chalmers from behind the 22 puts in the
00:05:08big thump.
00:05:11Greg Chalmers from the Melrose club is 44th international for Scotland tonight.
00:05:21Well as a race of people Tongans are not particularly tall but they have one or two tall ones in
00:05:26here tonight.
00:05:27Hovalu Latukefu is number five and Inoki Apiaki is number six.
00:05:34There is Wainwright going down, he's number six for Scotland.
00:05:38Tuipalo too, the most accomplished full-back.
00:05:53And we welcome our big audience to the telecast tonight from New Zealand, from the Pacific
00:06:00including Tonga.
00:06:01There is no live television in Tonga so the videotapes are flown there as soon as they
00:06:05can be.
00:06:06Damien Cronin going high, number four.
00:06:09Also tonight we welcome viewers in Malaysia, in Canada and in the United States.
00:06:16Derek Patterson is there, you can see he's a noisy typical half-back, plays down in England
00:06:21now.
00:06:22He's trying to wrench the ball clear and gets tangled up in it.
00:06:27So Kenneth Milne may go in and play a scrum half.
00:06:30Now it looks like it's Craig Joyner, number 14 and this is all designed for physical ascendancy
00:06:37in the forwards and it's locked up tight.
00:06:45The Tongan team have accepted the decision about Filetti Mahoney.
00:06:51They insist that in the previous game on this ground that he didn't kick a French player
00:06:55and that appears to be backed by the video evidence but true to the very well-mannered
00:07:00people that Tongans are, they will not appeal or protest and said they're going to use the
00:07:05absence of Filetti Mahoney as the inspiration for their game tonight.
00:07:11Here's the referee free-kicking Scotland for a collapse that time at front row.
00:07:19So in go the Tongan team, they're not going to replace Mahoney, they're going to play
00:07:22the rest of the tournament with 25 players only.
00:07:25Kenny Logan waits, a very accomplished winger for Scotland.
00:07:30Wainwright, Patterson well picked up and a fumble there by Tupulotu and the referee has
00:07:39signalled a penalty.
00:07:54There's the indication for the shot at goal.
00:07:59It'll be for the late charge against Patterson by Unoi Wainuku, the centre three-quarter
00:08:09which is the second offence of the same kind from the Tongan team.
00:08:16Gavin Hastings had 44 points in the previous game and with 64 also for the Lions, he's
00:08:23gone up to 671 points in all test matches and that means he's gone past Grant Fox and
00:08:29is now second on the all-time world point scoring list behind Michael Lyner.
00:08:40Six minutes gone, Scotland six, Tongan ill, Tonga paying for two late tackles in the first
00:08:49six minutes.
00:09:07So those first two lapses are unfortunate for Tonga.
00:09:18Bovalu Latukefu, his seventh test match.
00:09:20He plays in Australia at the Canberra Royals club.
00:09:29So David Hilton on the near side, Kenneth Milne, Peters, Patterson, Chalmers.
00:09:37It's a careful game by Scotland early on.
00:09:42Tupulotu.
00:09:47Discipline and concentration are just so important at this level and we've seen the
00:09:51Tongan team come out and make two late tackles, six points against them, then going back on
00:09:56the last play, kicking into touch on the full.
00:09:59Cannot afford to make those sort of mistakes at this level.
00:10:08Well done Weir, Patterson, Chalmers, Jardine is taking it up now, Ian Jardine the big sturdy
00:10:14crash ball man at second five eighths or inside centre.
00:10:20And a bit of a tussle in here.
00:10:23But another mistake made by Tonga, Willie Losei and Cronin involved here.
00:10:29And also Mana Otai.
00:10:35Mana Otai questioning the referee's decision there, but there was a threat of going up
00:10:4610 metres if he didn't move back from referee Leask of Australia.
00:10:51Offside.
00:10:52Yes, the penalty was for offside at ruck time.
00:10:54They're going to really have to compete at second phase Tonga because particularly from
00:10:58lineouts they are going to struggle for ball.
00:11:02That is already evident.
00:11:07More than ever this man is an inspirational figure for Scottish rugby.
00:11:11Certainly he makes mistakes in just about every game.
00:11:15But when Gavin Hastings fires up, Scotland fires up.
00:11:23Here he is trying to put the nine points out in the first 10 minutes.
00:11:41So Tonga are paying dearly for early indiscretions here in Pretoria.
00:11:47Ten to nil, Scotland the three penalty goals by Gavin Hastings.
00:11:56Douglas Morgan the Scottish coach who says he's going to quit at the end of the Rugby
00:12:03World Cup.
00:12:04This is taken by Eric Peters, 22 metre line, hit hard by Enoki Afeyaki.
00:12:12And as usual a steady boot of Craig Chalmers.
00:12:27Not surprising, not surprising Tonga have caught a short line out already.
00:12:30They'll need to use plenty of variation at line out time, putting it in quickly, moving
00:12:34people up and down the line, using short line outs.
00:12:37Losei and Latukefu against the two Scottish locks and that's Ipolito, Whanaukata number
00:12:45seven.
00:12:47Losei, Morrison dragged the ball out of his arms but here it is back to the Voodie Polo
00:12:53brothers.
00:12:54One, two, three of them all handling there.
00:12:56And Joyner gets hit hard by Tanvicta Wainuku.
00:13:25Fiao Voonipola, Willie Losei behind him, Mana Otai, Whanaukata tapped on to the Tongan
00:13:38side.
00:13:39It's gone to Scotland there but a knock on.
00:13:48So here's another test for scrum time, the Tongan front row, Tuakalao Fukafuka, Fiao
00:13:53Woonipola and Saili Fiao and that's Fukafuka on the side.
00:14:00And look a little bit of dew perhaps on the ball there, it wouldn't have popped out that
00:14:04way by a mishandle from Otai so they'll have to be careful about that.
00:14:12Ian Morrison, Derek Patterson.
00:14:41Hilton Peter Wright and Kenny Moore, there's Whanaukatao going down on the open side flanker.
00:14:49Patterson, Chalmers.
00:14:58As we've seen the weights are similar between the two packs so at scrum time it'll simply
00:15:02be a question of commitment and technique.
00:15:05Again Tonga dropping players off, Scotland seem to have a three into two there.
00:15:19Pitched deep to the back, Kenyali Latu, good tackle by Eric Peters, Woonipola, Tupulotu,
00:15:31Alaska Taufa, Whanaukatao, try!
00:15:42A popular try to Ipolito Whanaukatao, a lucky one in some respects because the ball spun
00:15:50out of Alaska Taufa's hands but it didn't go forward.
00:15:58And the try comes from a line out variation over the back, it comes out through the back
00:16:02line to Alaska Taufa who straightens up the attack but it pops out from his elbow, Whanaukatao
00:16:07who's such a good loose forward, right on hand to take advantage of it.
00:16:13Manu Woonipola straight out to Unuai Wainuku, Sateki Tupulotu up, Taufa lost it over his
00:16:21shoulder, it didn't go forward and Whanaukatao showing what a good number 7 he is, been right
00:16:26on the button to take the pass or to take the deflection and get the try.
00:16:35Well Scotland 9 up but Tonga score the first try, interesting, well I'm sure it will be
00:17:02the theme this evening on the Tongan side to use plenty of variations at line out time,
00:17:06scrum time and also kick offs, try and move the Scottish pack around the field and here
00:17:12was a perfect example of it, using a variation at line out time, Taufa coming in to straighten
00:17:17up the attack, Whanaukatao as we've already said such a good loose forward.
00:17:24The kick off is down at the 22 and Taufa has the ball again, Alaska Taufa but they're offside
00:17:29beyond the last man's putt, here's Manu Woonipola, before this World Cup series he was the only
00:17:37World Cup veteran still playing in Tonga but now of course all of them experienced that
00:17:45World Cup play and I guess that will help a little because they might have been a bit
00:17:48nervous against France but after a nervous and indisciplined start here they're into
00:17:55this with that early try, perfected by Losa, offside play by Peter Wright and he's gone
00:18:07down, he might have pulled a hammy is it, what are they looking at a knee perhaps, Peter
00:18:16Wright the big ex British Isles forward, props don't have hamstrings Keith, they don't have
00:18:23necks either, deep kick Hastings, well Gavin Hastings says it's always important, he speaks
00:18:41modestly, he says it's always important to the team if he takes the first few high kicks
00:18:45that come to him or makes the early tackles because he has felt the confidence come from
00:18:50his performance through the rest of the team, away goes Wainwright number six, Patterson his
00:19:04West Hartlepool club mate, Tau for waiting with Kenny Logan, Fenecatau taps it down to
00:19:11Afiaki, Afiaki number six, Fuka Fuka to Alisi, it's on the Tongan side of halfway, oh and there's
00:19:25Cronin, oh Cronin getting knocked down by Alaska Taufa, I think it was and that'll be trouble,
00:19:32a big forearm jolt across the face, Alaska Taufa in trouble, that was a forearm jolt
00:19:41right across the face of Cronin, even though he was offside, the referee points out that you don't
00:19:48take the law into your own hands, so that is further in ill-disciplined by Tonga, here's
00:20:00number 14, watch him there, just a forearm jolt across the chest and neck region by Taufa and
00:20:09the referee is on to him, a chance for Scotland to increase their lead,
00:20:22way started here, Hastings could threaten 700 point mark tonight,
00:20:40so sad that Tonga are so competitive around the field, but not when they make mistakes like that,
00:20:48which cost them points, Hastings penalises them again, 19 minutes gone, four penalties to Gavin
00:20:53Hastings, 3-0-2, David Hilton is number one,
00:21:23we're seeing a very different game plan from Scotland, they'll be looking for good quality
00:21:27possession from first phase, use Patterson to put it in the air or Chalmers or use Jardine
00:21:32to bring it forward in the midfield to set up second phase play, a far more conservative
00:21:37approach than the Tongans, Alessi Bunipola, fuka fuka, that's halfway, well he was the star of the
00:21:50team in the first game against France, Alessi Bunipola, Eric Peters controls,
00:22:03Tawhita Wainuku, Patterson, Chalmers, another high test for Tuipulotu,
00:22:20well that's against the players who are taking him out, Scott Hastings and Jardine coming through,
00:22:28well it looks as if the Scots are going to kick this ball to death, yes the statistics
00:22:38wouldn't show too many passing plays by Chalmers so far as Tuipulotu got interfered with there
00:22:45before he was allowed to make the catch, and a clearance to touch now from Alessi,
00:22:50it's Tuipulotu in fact who makes the kick, skies it badly to midfield, Derek Patterson
00:22:59just his second cap, Rob Wainwright, Ian Morrison, Cronin, fast hands to Scott Hastings,
00:23:14knock on by Peter Wright,
00:23:30at the quarter mark 12 points to five, Scotland have four penalty goals, Tonga have a try,
00:23:44Kenny Logan waits, Hastings got it, Rafi Aki got him, Jaffa thrown out of it by Logan,
00:24:01it's a tough physical game we're watching tonight folks, Patterson, Chalmers is going to kick it
00:24:07again, this is the short little one, Scott Hastings is through, try to hook it back to
00:24:12his side, Otai, Saeili Fiao getting his body between the ball and the opposition,
00:24:24but it really was an unsightly pile up there, well if Tonga are going to win this game by
00:24:33playing an expansive game they'll need to get that sort of 50-50 ball, they'll need to be a
00:24:37lot more accurate, a lot more disciplined than they are so far in this game, because they'll
00:24:42need to get the second and third phase ball and to do that they can't afford mistakes,
00:24:46dropping balls, they need to be accurate with what they do.
00:25:02Referee's calling the crouches there tonight as you can see and possibly hear,
00:25:06two little halfbacks there, now in past Ian Morrison, the open side of court there by Rafi Aki,
00:25:12and that's against Craig Chalmers for not staying on his feet, taken by Otai,
00:25:20lovely run by Unuai Wainuku, Elissi, Alaska Taufa, this is where Tonga are at their best.
00:25:36Latukefu, there's the goal on, Latu, Tuipulotu, Elissi,
00:25:49Enoki Afiaki, oh the Scots are into this too, some tough tackling,
00:25:57and Tabitha Wainuku did not release, the crowd aren't happy, and some hard hits,
00:26:07well this is when Tonga are at their best, ball in hand, running hard, running straight,
00:26:13retaining the ball, supporting each other, but again the referees have been very very strict
00:26:20at ruck time that the players stay up on their feet, they've been very strict throughout this
00:26:24tournament and it's good to see because it makes for better, more interesting rugby.
00:26:31A tough collision there on Craig Joyner, and there's Scott Hastings going down,
00:26:40and it's Scott Hastings who's the slower to get up,
00:26:43a couple of Scots down in fact, another one over to the right,
00:27:05and
00:27:12Chalmers with the clearance,
00:27:18well he lacks a bit of pace around the field Craig Chalmers, but
00:27:21there's no question he's a consummate artist if you like when he kicks the ball,
00:27:28Kenneth Milne from the Heriot's FP, Doddie Weir, and it was Weir that got the jump but it wasn't
00:27:34straight, right down the line, Peter Wright on the far side, on the tight head side, Hilton is the
00:27:45loose head, the two Boonie Polar brothers, Alicia's kick for Tevita Vainuke, but he was ahead of the
00:27:57kick, anyway the free kick is awarded for the fair catch,
00:28:14really a change of tactic there from the Tongan side, I would much prefer to see them with the
00:28:18ball in hand, running hard, running straight, that's when they are able to put Scotland under
00:28:22pressure, it's the game that they enjoy, it's the game that they play well, yeah good point Jock,
00:28:26they've got to keep it in hand and run hard, here they go again, Alicia, Latu and they've kicked it
00:28:32away again, but let's see what happens to the chase, it's a good gain of territory from Penny
00:28:40Ali-Latu, the 22 year old, the crowd are enjoying this here, a good gain in ground terms but
00:28:48it's a line out with Scotland throwing it in, difficult for Tonga,
00:28:52they have this man, their biggest, Pauvalu Latukefu,
00:29:02but there is Cronin who's back from that arm injury, he suffered against France and Paris,
00:29:07he lives in France, plays for the Bourges club and he had an elbow ligament injury that kept him
00:29:13out for the rest of the season, charmers, well there you go, that's what happens Jock, if you
00:29:20kick it away, people like charmers can get the control and kick it back, yes it's all very well
00:29:31to quick kick for position but in doing so of course you're giving the line out to Scotland,
00:29:35they have a definite advantage there, I would much prefer to see them with the ball in hand,
00:29:39taking it forward and putting Scotland under pressure in that sort of way,
00:29:43good hit by Otai, counter-attack but they've kicked it again,
00:29:51Penny Ali-Latu,
00:29:59I heard some rather salty language directed at the referee then
00:30:02with the Scottish accent, I think they felt that it should have been their stoppage there,
00:30:14so
00:30:24and the referee has just suggested to one of the Scottish players that if he
00:30:27hears any more of that kind of language, he'll go for the long walk, referee Barry Leask,
00:30:43so
00:31:01so there they are fanning out of the line out again for Tonga to have a short
00:31:05throw in, Fialvuni Pola looking out for instructions,
00:31:08Wuli Losei in the front,
00:31:18and Wainwright came in, got it, George Wilson-Weir,
00:31:26Patterson, Chalmers, decided to have a run, he got through more than he should have,
00:31:39and there is Patterson taking an uncomfortable blow, Hastings kicking through,
00:31:49well the Scots are giving as good as they're getting in the tough physical exchanges,
00:32:09one, two, three, pistol,
00:32:16Fenerbahce who scored the game's only try, but they've rolled him the other way,
00:32:19the wrong way for Tonga, and it'll come for Patterson, Chalmers, he's kicked out I think
00:32:24every time he's had it, Jardine is through on Tuipulo too, and well-deflected Jardine,
00:32:30but it's gone to Inoki,
00:32:33Manu Wuli Pola,
00:32:35that's his brother Fia, three brothers on the field, another two brothers remember,
00:32:40in the family, have also played for Tonga at Rugby, hands in the ruck,
00:32:51well the referee's getting a roasting from the crowd who are obviously favouring the underdogs,
00:32:55but that seems another fair call by referee Leask, and more points going to the Scots,
00:33:04possibly coming up for Scotland, Leask penalties are costing Tonga
00:33:11very very dearly, the referee picking up a hand in this ruck,
00:33:19difficult to see from those pictures, but the referee ruling that the Tongan hand was a ruck
00:33:24situation, not able to do that, and again Gavin Hastings has the opportunity of putting more
00:33:29points for Scotland, this game really hasn't got into any sort of rhythm at the moment,
00:33:33there's been a lot of off the ball sort of action, Scotland looking to kick almost
00:33:37every time they get the ball, and really Tonga not getting enough ball at the moment,
00:33:51Hastings, and through it goes,
00:33:54five penalties for the big fullback,
00:34:04inside the last 10 minutes of the first half, and five penalty goals to Gavin Hastings,
00:34:10my word he's piled on some points in the last season, Gavin Hastings had a record 56 points
00:34:16for Scotland in the Five Nations Championship, now the Tongans have compounded their problems
00:34:21by getting in front of the kickoff, it's all gone wrong for the lack of focus at key parts of the
00:34:28game, well as I said at the start of the game Tonga played extremely well in their first game
00:34:32against France, because there was plenty of commitment, plenty of thought and skill, but
00:34:38they haven't yet been able to duplicate that here in this game, Peters to Patterson, it's a fumbling
00:34:47ball, and knock on by Toipulotu, the Tongans aren't happy, they say it didn't go forward,
00:34:55it's very important that they retain their composure, their discipline,
00:35:00Manaoto really needs to pull them together to get back the concentration, get back the intensity,
00:35:05get back the thought, otherwise they're going to get shut out of this game,
00:35:10the big question was whether they were going to be able to, so shortly after that big effort
00:35:14against France, do it again, I think that that free kick there was for the Tongan halfback,
00:35:20not letting the referee get in to police the front row, so that's an odd one,
00:35:24it's coming for Patterson now, Chalmers passes at last, Logan number 11, 12 meters out,
00:35:44Saely Fiao is the injured player for Tonga,
00:36:03here is Eric Peters, Glasgow born, but until he was 25, he played all his rugby
00:36:09in England, then he declared that he was going to play for Scotland, and so he is,
00:36:15here's Chalmers, he passed it to Logan, it's a very good finish at Kenny Logan,
00:36:18he got hit in a good tackle, and let it go, but perhaps a little too soon,
00:36:23and so it became a 50-50 ball, when it should have been made certain for his side,
00:36:30so the last one up will be Eric Peters there, number eight,
00:36:44Fiao is slowly in, see the woman coming on for Tonga, that's Leslie Akawolo,
00:36:50the physiotherapist, look how low they are, it can hardly stay up, but Guni Paula gets a kick in,
00:37:00and Peter Wright and Fiao Guni Paula eyeballing each other,
00:37:13Wainwright going high, but hooked on the Tonga side, Otai, 15 points to five, half time approaching,
00:37:30so
00:37:48well thrown from Milne to Weir,
00:37:51and this is good ball for the Scottish pack to get around and really move well,
00:37:55Tonga looking a bit ragged here,
00:38:00Patterson, very tough aggressive player, Otai took him down,
00:38:05referee hasn't called that one as a late one,
00:38:15this is Scotland's best period of attack in the game,
00:38:25Rob Wainwright,
00:38:32what the hell's going on the front there, what's it all about, confusing me,
00:38:37well props are always confused aren't they, well taken by
00:38:40Lose, the loose forward has been turned into a lock for the world cup,
00:38:50just a planned move from the front row I think, a decoy move,
00:38:53is it, running interference,
00:39:07good work by Wainwright, Weir, kicked away by Tonga,
00:39:11Chalmers has lost it, Patterson, Patterson off to Jardine, Scott Hastings has lost it,
00:39:17advantage applying,
00:39:30Willie Lose just put in a tackle that just about nearly carved a Scotsman in half,
00:39:37tough man Willie, we had a message from the East Coast Plays Club
00:39:40in Auckland to mention that Lose is from the club, the whistle's gone here as Otai breaks away,
00:39:46and there was obstruction there by other members of the loose forward,
00:39:52Enoki perhaps, we'll have to have a look at the replay there,
00:40:01Otai's having it explained to him, the shot at goal is coming up again from Gavin Hastings,
00:40:0914 degrees tonight in Pretoria, Rugby World Cup, Pool D, Tonga against Scotland,
00:40:20Gavin Hastings five penalties already, goodness, the world record's eight,
00:40:24if he gets this one that'll be six,
00:40:29South African flags waving, their team scored their second victory today but it was not impressive,
00:40:38Tonga play Dealey again, six penalties for Hastings, 18 to five, here's the move, see how,
00:41:03well, I don't understand that one on the second look at all,
00:41:07John, I think you wouldn't on the third and fourth look as well, I think Tonga were very,
00:41:11very unlucky, just the fact that he passed behind him, perhaps, I don't know,
00:41:20but the man in front wasn't obstructing anybody, it was just free area, free space,
00:41:24there's no advantage there for Tonga at all, I think they were very, very hard done by,
00:41:28Fiavunipola to the 22, Morrison, gee, these rucks have been messy, haven't they,
00:41:40people were lying all over the place, well over the ball,
00:41:49there is a lot of complaining and talking to the referee, language that would make a sailor blush,
00:41:59and referee Leisk has had enough, I think he's going to have a chat with Mana Otai,
00:42:18so important to prevent these pile-ups by making sure that the initial ball carrier has good body
00:42:22position and then that his supports are there quickly to clear the ball away and that players
00:42:28are made to stand up on their feet, it's vital for Tonga, they need plenty of that ball,
00:42:39very close to halftime, 18 to five to Scotland, another scrum collapses,
00:43:09well, not much to say about Craig Chalmers, the first half he just
00:43:18made one pass and that was close to the line, the rest of the time he's kicked for position,
00:43:28I'm sure they'll be just quite happy to go from set piece to set piece, put the ball in the air
00:43:32and put the Tongans under pressure that way and just look through some points,
00:43:35most probably through Gavin Hastings, well ripped by Peters, but the referee
00:43:42has awarded a penalty for players coming in on the side,
00:43:44but it was very well ripped away by Eric Peters,
00:43:53so they might have a shot at goal to close that gap,
00:43:57there's the distance, it's handy enough for Tuipulotu, have a look at Peters here,
00:44:02number eight, he does a good ripping job here underneath, yeah, but is he entitled to,
00:44:05isn't the ball there on the ground, it's a ruck situation, he shouldn't have his hands there,
00:44:09it's getting very, very messy in this phase, a murky area of the rule book, very dark, but
00:44:15it suits Scotland, but it doesn't suit Tonga because they need that ball because they want to
00:44:20run the Scottish side around the paddock.
00:44:31A change in goal kicker, Elissi Funipola has come into the kicking,
00:44:38Tuipulotu has been off form for the World Cup series,
00:44:44so the young man, 23 next week.
00:44:50But they are not strong in goal kicking, and Gavin Hastings touches it down, must be very
00:44:56close to the half-time break, it is half-time, six penalties by Gavin Hastings, six out of six
00:45:02to a try, and Scotland in the lead by 18 to five over Tonga at half-time here at Loftus Firstfield.
00:45:20Rugby World Cup action from Loftus Firstfield in Pretoria, we're about to see the second half of
00:45:31Ikalitahi, the Sea Eagles of Tonga against Scotland, and at half-time Scotland lead by
00:45:3818 points to five, six penalties out of six attempts for Gavin Hastings, to one try by
00:45:43Finneke Tau for Tonga.
00:45:49And certainly the crowd here have enjoyed it tonight,
00:45:53as the attendants leave the field on the second half about to begin.
00:46:01So can the Tongans settle in and play more disciplined football in the second half,
00:46:06because I'm sure they'll be very disappointed to have conceded so many penalties,
00:46:10although that last one that Hastings converted into points did seem to be
00:46:14perhaps a mistake on the part of the referee.
00:46:27Take the full five minutes for the half-time break at World Cup Games.
00:46:31And there is referee Barry Liske from Australia who begins the second half,
00:46:43and again a good take from the kickoff by Doddie Weir, remember at the start of the game he charged
00:46:48through and caught the Tongans kickoff, and Scotland's pack has worked pretty well in a
00:46:53tough and physical encounter, not much running enterprise from both back lines.
00:46:59Tuipulotu who's been taken off the goal kicking,
00:47:03and has had a rather unhappy time because of that, takes it across the touchline.
00:47:07Former All Black captain Jock Hobbs, what are you hoping for in the second 40?
00:47:10Well we saw through the half-time break Tonga in a close huddle, I'm sure they were
00:47:17just reminding themselves of their game plan, reminding themselves that they need to concentrate
00:47:22more, they need to cut out their ill discipline, they need to cut out the number of mistakes that
00:47:26they were making, which was really putting them at a disadvantage in the first half,
00:47:30just try and lift up the intensity and lift up the concentration.
00:47:34Another one up into the ozone layer from Craig Chalmers, Latu has it, 22 meter line to the right.
00:47:47What about the Scottish team Jock, I suppose in their point production
00:47:52they'll be looking to have the satisfaction of scoring a try.
00:47:55Well I'm sure they're probably pretty happy just to continue on the same sort of way as they did
00:48:00in the first half, just move from set piece to set piece, they'll kick a lot through Patterson
00:48:04and Chalmers, really just look for good field positions and then take advantage of any Tonga
00:48:09mistake, it'll be pretty sort of conservative stuff from them I would expect.
00:48:16He's having a good game as Doddie Weir, that's him with the headband and the blonde hair, number five.
00:48:21And he's got Scotland away to a great start in the second half, Chalmers,
00:48:24he made a pass to Ian Morrison, the open side flanker from the London Scottish club.
00:48:31A pass on the inside Keith. Yeah he didn't let it out did he, Patterson, Joyner.
00:48:45Dangerous tackle there against Craig Joyner, buried him on his head.
00:48:50By Fiao Gunipola.
00:48:55As I said, this suits the Scottish side, they'll just look for this sort of field position,
00:49:01just simply try and retain the ball, not be too adventurous with it
00:49:05and look for a mistake from the Tongan side.
00:49:08Craig Joyner from Melrose, see how he gets tipped up here by the defenders,
00:49:13they turn him up, these are very dangerous tackles, these spear tackles,
00:49:16and he was dumped on his shoulder and the referee called it a dangerous tackle.
00:49:21I think you'll find it's just for the high tackle, just now by Manu Gunipola.
00:49:29Some heavy work coming in from the Tongans at both ends as it were.
00:49:33What's the chance of Gavin Hastings setting a world record for penalty goals?
00:49:37Because he's got six so far, he's got six out of six, this one's handy,
00:49:41that's seven, the world record's eight. Well if the Tongans continue to infringe
00:49:44at the rate they have been in this game, he's got every chance, hasn't he?
00:49:49And if he gets that world record number of points, he might pass 700 points
00:49:55in test football tonight. He started the game at 671.
00:50:15They pay, again, Tonga, 21 points to five, seven penalty goals for the big Scottish fullback.
00:50:29An interesting factor is that Scotland may well win this game playing this sort of tactic,
00:50:34but can they win the World Cup doing that? I suspect not.
00:50:38The next game for Scotland is against France,
00:50:42and the next game for Tonga is against Ivory Coast, so Tonga really want the win here
00:50:46to confirm themselves in the quarterfinals,
00:50:50but they're not going to get it playing the way they are. Far too many penalties given away.
00:51:04Eric Peters there, he's a tough customer, this guy, number eight, he's the guy that trains
00:51:08with Frank Brunner, takes some of the hard physical work that the big-time heavyweight boxer puts in.
00:51:22Down in the foreground you see Craig Joyner coming across,
00:51:27chemical engineering student, the youngest member of the team, he got a knock, and these young men
00:51:33from Ireland were at the stadium the other day backing Ireland against the All Blacks,
00:51:37so they've come down to see Scotland play tonight, and Tonga too, I suppose.
00:51:47Alisi, Latu, good tackle by Peters.
00:51:55Fuka Fuka, number three, Manu Bunipola, Alisi, trying to pass the ball.
00:52:03Well, we reckon up here that's the best tactic for the Tongans.
00:52:09Latu puts a little stab kick in, Hastings, like a center forward,
00:52:14shooting for goal, high kicks it across the touchline.
00:52:27Interesting again though, with Tonga looking a bit of a threat, but then
00:52:31rather than keeping the ball in hand and looking to take the ball forward,
00:52:34which they're so good at, a chip kick, giving the possession away.
00:52:41Tongans have had real trouble at line-out time on their own throw,
00:52:45they lack height and experience as jumpers, we'll say there, but he got up for that one but was lifted.
00:52:55Patterson's going to take the tap, is he, or Scotland will just play steady.
00:52:59That's the way they've played it all night.
00:53:04Chalmers to touch.
00:53:22The only try-scorer tonight, Fede Katao.
00:53:29Deep right over the back, Fede Katao tapped it, a loose one.
00:53:34That's Alisi, oh some hard footwork there by Fijao Bunipola on Milne.
00:53:44Tough stuff, one sort of senses that this could explode.
00:53:48Touch judge's flag is out, touch judge has his flag out, it'll be for that rucking, Latu.
00:53:54Afiaki, counter-attack Patterson, he's been brought in for his tougher approach than Redpath
00:54:02and it's worked for Scotland and I've had the feeling that this could boil over.
00:54:08Touch judge is going to come into the game.
00:54:12There's trouble afoot, I think both touch judges had their flags out at one stage.
00:54:18Here's Willy Losei who's down, two Tongans are down.
00:54:24Japanese, Japanese touch judge Nobby Saito is reporting to Barry Leask.
00:54:43And here's what it'll be about, a bit of footwork on Milne.
00:54:48And it's the two number twos involved and they're all coming back over and
00:54:53Fijao Bunipola I think is going to be spoken to by the referee.
00:55:00Mana Ota, his team has already had one man dismissed for sending off.
00:55:18Well the referee said stamping against his legs, I think there might be a bit of a language problem
00:55:21between the touch judge and the referee because quite obviously it was up around the shoulders.
00:55:27There it is again for us to see.
00:55:33Kenneth Milne, the veteran Scottish hooker on the receiving end.
00:55:38And there's Hastings driving them back, a very good kick indeed.
00:55:43Craig Chalmers, it was in fact.
00:55:48Well let's hope it doesn't boil over, but certainly it's bubbling under at the moment.
00:55:55Rob Wainwright, Feni Katau.
00:56:0321 points to five, Scotland lead, good work by Weah.
00:56:0810 minutes gone, second half.
00:56:12Wainwright joins again.
00:56:20I must say Scotland have not shirked from the hard physical action.
00:56:23That's Morrison.
00:56:33I think we're going to see a world record penalty goals tonight and in many ways
00:56:37that'll be a bit sad because it's not something you want to celebrate.
00:56:40But that was for joining from the side I think, Jock.
00:56:45Well we've just seen so many mistakes by the Tongans in their own quarter and that is giving
00:56:52Gavin Hastings the opportunity for this world record. I just sense that the Tongans are just
00:56:59not concentrating on what's required, they just seem to be occupied with off the ball sort of
00:57:04incidents, getting a little bit frustrated. We've seen in that last ruck they know that they need
00:57:08that sort of ball desperately, they're getting a little bit frustrated by the Scottish lying
00:57:12across the ball and preventing it from being released. We see there that, what do we see,
00:57:21Keith? It's confusing that one to me, Jock. Let's see what the result is, seven out of seven.
00:57:26And a free kick is taken as the ball bounces off the post by Willie Lesay.
00:57:56Again, I'm sure that Scotland will look to put this ball in, get their big man up in the air,
00:58:06set up another maul and just shunt it forward.
00:58:10He's had a good game, has Doddie Weir, Ken Milne, David Hilton number one, the Bristol Butcher.
00:58:20Now is it coming for Patterson?
00:58:25Chalmers, Gavin Hastings in, Wainwright with him.
00:58:32Centrefield.
00:58:36Patterson, Chalmers, Hastings,
00:58:41Joyner. There's the goal line ahead. They're going to try and pile drive it in.
00:59:03It'll be very interesting to see what Scotland do at this scrum. Will they just look to try
00:59:06and shunt it across, or just use their loose forwards and play it very, very close? I suspect
00:59:11they will.
00:59:21Scrum half, Patterson is down, coming back slowly.
00:59:27Both the halfbacks, in fact, Manu Wunipola, the highest number of caps in the Tongan team.
00:59:48Well, Scotland have not stood back from the heavy stuff up front, have they?
00:59:53Well, they've never been known to. They are a physical side. They've always been a little bit
00:59:56similar in that respect to the All Blacks. They're always prepared to give their fair
01:00:00share and get stuck in, so that's nothing surprising in that. I'm a little surprised,
01:00:05though, by the fact that they have taken the conservative type of game that they're playing
01:00:10to the extent that they have. See that, Jock? Eight attempts at goal from 10 penalties awarded,
01:00:15so Tonga have conceded a lot within kicking range. Seven goals, of course.
01:00:23So, a good position for Scotland. They haven't scored a try yet. They only have
01:00:34seven penalty goals.
01:00:45A long way to go in the game, 25 minutes left.
01:00:57That signal by the referee indicates the scrum has turned around past
01:01:0190 degrees, and so they reset again.
01:01:08Well, they've been a shambles at collapsing right throughout the game.
01:01:15So,
01:01:25good effort by Tonga at scrum time, but it's on the Scottish side.
01:01:38The ball hit the deck and was guided away with the hand. You see referee Lisk's signal,
01:01:47and another shot at goal coming in for Gavin Hastings. Well,
01:01:49the referee looks a bit brassed off about the whole thing as well.
01:02:01Well, we've just seen it so often, haven't we?
01:02:03In that 50-50 situation, the ball here going to ground. We'll just look for a hand.
01:02:12Yes, picked up by the referee. Just cannot afford to do that. The Tongans need to get bound low
01:02:17and just simply drive over the top. Concentration again, letting the Tongan team down.
01:02:33So, it's probably not one to shout about, but that's a world record equal,
01:02:48eight penalty goals in a Test match. Hastings takes Scotland out to 24 points to five.
01:02:56Well, his previous game, he got 44 points, which was a Rugby World Cup record for most points in
01:03:02a game. That included four tries. All kicks so far, Scotland will want to score a try to
01:03:08boost their confidence going into the game against France. A tough game,
01:03:15a bruising game here at Loftus Firstfield. Morrison, number seven.
01:03:25Patterson, he played in the Test against the Springboks last December,
01:03:29they got thrashed and was dumped, and this is his second cap.
01:03:33Been giving Chalmers a good ride all night.
01:03:40A replacement on the field, Nafe Tupui is on as scrum half.
01:03:46He's quite an accomplished player as well. He's had 11 appearances for Tonga.
01:03:53So, nobody wants to throw in here at the moment.
01:04:11Scottish forwards have provided the platform for this effort from Scotland.
01:04:16They're very, very good at line-out time. They have a very tall line-out,
01:04:19they're solid in the scrums, and they're very good at kick-offs.
01:04:23So, they are securing good ball for Patterson, and he's delivering it well to Chalmers.
01:04:32Patterson hooked that kick around.
01:04:40Tupui. Morrison, number seven.
01:04:49Ken Mill.
01:04:53Peters, number eight.
01:04:56Chalmers.
01:05:04Buried by Scott Hastings, and it's across the touchline.
01:05:11Well, the crunch in this game has really got the crowd going.
01:05:19Mill to throw.
01:05:35Cronin palms it down. Patterson off the floor. Chalmers, a good little run. Knock-off.
01:05:42Just starting to get the feeling that the sting is going out of the Tongan effort.
01:05:50Scotland is just getting so much ball.
01:06:0124 points to five. Tupui.
01:06:12Patterson.
01:06:29Weir has had an armchair ride. Mill. Morrison, that's an unusual one.
01:06:34Two passes at line-out time to midfield. Now they have the ruck.
01:06:38Patterson, Chalmers, Jardine. Oh, a hammerhead on him.
01:06:47Excellent tackle by Tuipulotu. Cronin. They're on their feet and balling well.
01:07:00There's the goal line, and Peters is in.
01:07:08Eric Peters.
01:07:22Scored that marvellous try after the 75-meter run in the game against Wales in the Five Nations.
01:07:28That time he took the short route for his second try for Scotland.
01:07:38One of the few occasions tonight where Scotland have looked to move the ball,
01:07:45but they're just getting so much ball. Joyner sees the ball from one of the first occasions tonight.
01:07:50Good tackling from the Tongans. Tuipulotu makes a good tackle, but the Scottish forwards get there
01:07:55very, very quickly. Cronin doing extremely well for a lot. Peters is also there early.
01:08:01They just steady it up. They get the ball set well. Good body positions. Just too much weight,
01:08:07too much power, and Peters is across.
01:08:12Gavin Hastings. Eight penalty goals. Now a conversion attempt.
01:08:24And effectively that's his first miss because the only penalty,
01:08:28remember, that didn't go over hit the post and deflected away.
01:08:3129 to 5. One try each. Eight penalties to Hastings.
01:08:38It was good work by Cronin here to keep the ball in play. And then Peters drove around
01:08:44off the back of the mall and was assisted across. Yes, Cronin can take a lot of credit for that try.
01:08:51He supported Joyner very, very well. Got there quickly. Lifted the ball up off the ground
01:08:55and allowed his forwards to get there in numbers and keep the ball up for Peters to crash over.
01:09:00It's a fiery Scottish forward pack. Remember, this is the team that had nine losses in a row
01:09:06up until January this year in Test matches. Now they're heading for seven wins out of eight.
01:09:13Chalmers. They're trying to hammer home this advantage now. As Jock Hobbs said to us,
01:09:19the sting's gone out of the tongans now and the Scots are all over them.
01:09:24Patterson has had a very good game.
01:09:29Unoed by Nuku back. Goal line right there.
01:09:36Elisibu Nepolo.
01:09:40Patterson's going to get it.
01:09:46No, it was a mess. A tangle. A jungle.
01:09:54The tongans are really just trying to hang on in here at the moment. They're not getting any ball.
01:09:59They're not really making any impact in the game at all in terms of their own tactics because
01:10:04they're not getting any ball. They're just having to make the tackles and just try and hang on there.
01:10:15So they've got to wait till the full front row is formed with the prop Sa'ili Fiao injured and
01:10:21off the sideline.
01:10:33So two players prominent in Australian rugby there. Sa'ili Fiao who's been in the Queensland squad this
01:10:40year. And Barry Leask, Australia's top referee. Wayne Erickson running the touch line.
01:10:48Scotland right on top. Will the Scots look to move it now?
01:10:54They don't have a great running midfield. Jardine is a tough tackler. He's number 12.
01:10:59Scott Hastings at outside centre. He's played most of his 55 tests at inside centre.
01:11:05But we'll see what they come up with. 29 to 5. Patterson. Chalmers. Jardine for the crash.
01:11:12Slow on the tackle. Hilton.
01:11:23And Hilton, number one, did not release. Penalty for Tonga.
01:11:30What a great game Weir is having. This is the fellow that came into test rugby
01:11:33as a 14 stone lock. He's now had 29 tests. He's 16 stone three.
01:11:41A few of the Tongans are going down for the count here.
01:11:49Fuka Fuka is walking towards the sideline and the clearance from Alissi Vunipola.
01:11:56He was very close to scoring David Hilton but he didn't release to the satisfaction of referee Leask.
01:12:03Damian Cronin. He's been in and out of Scotland team for seven years. The same applies to
01:12:10Weir in many respects. Peters. Wainwright. Good jump by Losey. Sixers. Afiaki.
01:12:25Ngape Tufui.
01:12:34Craig Joyner. Gavin Hastings. There it goes.
01:12:42A 50-50 ball claimed well by Hilton. It's there for Patterson. Otai was on to him.
01:12:5122 meter line. Tufui. Tuipalotu.
01:12:57Fenucatau. Losey. Here's Tonga's best run for a while. Fuka Fuka. Well hit by Peters.
01:13:14Tufui. Alissi. Latu. Wainuku. This is Piao Vunipola.
01:13:26And it was out. Referee signals play on. Peters. Patterson. Hastings. And Hastings taken out.
01:13:40Kicked away by Alissi Vunipola. The penalty is for the late tackle on Gavin Hastings.
01:13:49Well such a pity for Tonga. They were doing so well there. There was
01:13:53just a little bit of the old spark which they had against the French for most of that game
01:13:57against France but we've seen so little of in this game. But they look so good when they're able to
01:14:01split open and move the ball wide. But a late tackle on Gavin Hastings which we'll see here
01:14:07as he looks to kick the ball forward. Again looking for good field position rather than
01:14:12looking to move the ball. And the captain Mana Otai with a shoulder charge. Again lack of
01:14:19concentration. Some ill discipline. It's been such a feature of the Tongan effort tonight
01:14:24and it's cost them very dearly. Well I suppose because he was involved more than ever Hastings
01:14:31would like to put this one through. It's not good to see the Tongan captain involved in that.
01:14:49So 12 minutes to go in the game. 29 to 5. Hastings kicking for his perhaps eighth penalty goal.
01:14:58It's across the front.
01:15:02I'm sorry his ninth penalty that would have been. There's Richie Dixon to the right
01:15:06and Douglas Morgan the Scottish coaching staff.
01:15:11Well was that kicked properly? Patterson has had an outstanding game.
01:15:15The little halfback who had just one cap and then was dumped.
01:15:27Cronin. Patterson again from right. Chalmers. Jardine. Scott Hastings. Gavin Hastings.
01:15:36What a try. What a brilliant try.
01:15:43And there's trouble happening behind the goal line.
01:15:56This is Unoa Wainuku. No, Tavikta Wainuku.
01:15:59And the two brothers are arguing with the referee and they may be in a bit of trouble.
01:16:08Gavin Hastings is in the lead as the tri-scorer in Rugby World Cup for this tournament. His brother
01:16:14gave him the last pass and he's, look at this, all grit, determination and he's,
01:16:21the score is made for Hastings and somebody got punched afterwards and I think it was Hastings.
01:16:28Well it's just interesting to watch number 11 Tavikta Wainuku here just inside. Hastings outside.
01:16:34Scotland didn't miss anybody. They just simply passed it through the chain
01:16:37out to Gavin Hastings and he was outside Tavikta Wainuku.
01:16:44Tonga just simply didn't have the numbers in defence.
01:16:47Nobody was missed by Scotland. There was no cutbacks to create any space.
01:16:50Gavin Hastings was just simply outside in free space with a straight run to the tri-line.
01:16:56The Tongan team have lost it I'm afraid. The two brothers there were arguing
01:17:00and fighting behind the goal line. I think we might see a penalty back at halfway
01:17:05when the game resumes because that's what can happen if there's an offence involving foul play
01:17:11Meanwhile, Hastings trying to convert his own try. He has 29 points so far.
01:17:22Let's watch the referee to see if it's going to be a penalty. Yes, referee running to the
01:17:26halfway mark has signalled a penalty for Scotland for precisely the reasons I've outlined.
01:17:40Hastings, Tavikta Wainuku falls over. Well, he might have tripped against Scott Hastings' boot.
01:17:59I think Gavin Hastings had gone past him anyway. He had to make the decision whether to come in
01:18:03and try and stop the move on Scott Hastings or stay out and mark Gavin Hastings. He decided to
01:18:08come in, didn't take anybody. Good pass from Scott Hastings to his brother Gavin who then had a free
01:18:14run to the line. Well, the Tongan management team, the manager to the left, the coach to the right
01:18:20far from happy but I think this is heading for a bit of a disgrace for Tonga. The King of Tonga
01:18:25before the World Cup started was complaining that the Tongan team weren't winning enough games
01:18:32and maybe that meant that they tried to play harder but they've lost it at the moment in
01:18:38terms of control and discipline and Gavin Hastings from the halfway spot to try and make it 37-5.
01:18:48It's hit the post again and deflected away. He's got to be perhaps denied that
01:19:06world record of penalty goals in a test. 34-5, still eight minutes to play.
01:19:18Gavin Hastings, 63 points in two games. What's the story with the Tonga team?
01:19:31Te Pui is going to take the drop out.
01:19:39Patterson who's weathered the big storms so superbly tonight
01:19:43and that's a very good kick. He touched the touchline and it's out.
01:19:47Alaska tougher, he skidded back and hit the touchline
01:19:55and Scotland will be in here to try to hammer home and make that winning margin bigger.
01:20:05Well, it's almost a certainty that they'll win the line out.
01:20:10Cronin, Hilton number one supporting him. Seven minutes to play.
01:20:17Cronin, Milne, that Scottish Packers worked very hard.
01:20:31Accidentally offside.
01:20:38Well, a big crowd here tonight is back to Tonga all the way but I think they're back the wrong team
01:20:41job. Yes, it's been a long evening for Tonga and they have been guilty of a lot of indiscretions,
01:20:48ill discipline and too many mistakes particularly in their own quarter which of course has given
01:20:53Gavin Hastings all these points. I think they'll be disappointed with their performance. It's so
01:20:57difficult at this level. Their last test match was only a few days ago and they had to lift
01:21:01themselves back up and the question was were they capable of doing so.
01:21:13Tafui's kick going to Logan. Scotland's star winger Ken Logan's hardly seen any ball out there.
01:21:24I think he got a fright then. It went out his direction.
01:21:31That's Judge has his flag out. Wayne Erickson and Barry Leist, two Australians.
01:21:46Well, Fiyah Bunipola. We've been a little bit critical of the Scottish effort in terms of
01:21:55playing a conservative type of game but that it has been effective for them.
01:21:59They have played to their strengths. They've looked for field position and they've done it well.
01:22:04Fiyah Bunipola is cautioned. The game goes on. Scott Hastings, the hard man at centre,
01:22:11takes the tackle. Patterson. Morrison.
01:22:17Damien Cronin still in possession.
01:22:32So much the Scottish style looking to move it into the midfield with Jardine and Hastings
01:22:37taking it out hard, taking it up straight and then just getting their forward pack around
01:22:41them and taking it forward. That was just simply going back to the earlier incident
01:22:47involving Logan with a kick from Tonga going forward.
01:22:59In fact, that was the second stomping for this man, Fiyah Bunipola, but he was given a caution
01:23:06second time. I'm not sure whether that shouldn't have been a sending off, but both touch judges
01:23:11reported him. Here's a chase now behind the line and it's a try for Scott Hastings.
01:23:24I have never heard such language coming from a team directed at the referee.
01:23:28Scott Hastings has scored the try. 39-5.
01:23:45Well, that was a hairline decision for the referee as the players dived for the ball.
01:23:50The Tongans objected furiously to the awarding of the try. Let's look again,
01:23:55see how we go in the replay. Uenoi Buenocco and Scott Hastings.
01:24:08We look at a different angle. We see that Jardine kicks it forward. He's chasing it along with
01:24:14Scott Hastings. I think the downward pressure came from the Tongan player and perhaps Tonga were
01:24:21unlucky. Converted by Gavin Hastings to give him 31 points for the game. It's 41 points to five.
01:24:35Hastings 65 points for the tournament so far. 44 plus 31. Another flag.
01:24:43The referee wants it broken up again. There's a touch judge report to come
01:24:53and Wayne Erickson has called in again. New player on the field, Paul Bernal.
01:25:0175 points in fact for Gavin Hastings in the tournament. Another penalty against Tonga
01:25:14for a shoulder charge.
01:25:2341 to five. Let's look at this again.
01:25:40Well that's the replay of the try to Scott Hastings. Again it looks marginal. I don't
01:25:46think referees should give tries unless they're totally satisfied it's been scored.
01:25:49So Paul Bernal is on the field for the last minute of this fiery game and the Scots have
01:25:56come through the Tongan physical approach very well. Given as good as they've got.
01:26:07Bringing it back from deep in his own territory. Lost by Federica Tao.
01:26:11Scott Hastings on the advantage.
01:26:15We're very near the end of the game now.
01:26:27And the two fullbacks have collided. Assistant coach of the Tongan team.
01:26:32You may hear more echoes of this after this game.
01:26:3931 points to Gavin Hastings in this game. Eight penalty goals, a try and a conversion.
01:26:50Plus the 44 against Ivory Coast means he's scored 75 in two games as 40 minutes ticks over.
01:27:00Tonga losing by 38 to 10 to France and 41 to 5 here.
01:27:09Jim Telfer there watching. Former British Isles and Scottish International. One of their most
01:27:14famous players. I'm sure he'll be satisfied with the Scottish effort. As we've said many times it
01:27:21hasn't been a very expansive effort on their part but it's been very solid based on their forward
01:27:26play. And I think the Scottish forwards have frustrated the Tongan forwards and that's led
01:27:31to the ill discipline. Tonga really hasn't been able to get into this game because it hasn't had
01:27:36the ball and what ball it hasn't been able to get hasn't been able to create any second or third
01:27:41phase ball which is so important to them. Patterson, Chalmers, Peters. Latu number 12.
01:27:54The Scots are really barreling in now and
01:27:57Afeyaki pulling them down must be getting very near the end.
01:28:08Well the Scottish team management picked the team to play this game. They picked the tough
01:28:13guys in midfield. Jardine and Scott Hastings and Derek Patterson at half back and a tough
01:28:19forward back. And they've done the job for Scotland.
01:28:34And perhaps the last run of the game now. Enoki Afeyaki.
01:28:44And it's over. It's over and Scotland are deserving winners 41 to 5.
01:28:54Their flags are waving. Gavin Hastings thanks the referee and in the rugby tradition handshakes
01:29:02all round but this one was a tough and bruising game. And the Tongans have lost it through ill
01:29:11discipline. Final score 41 to 5.
