00:00:00There's a real atmosphere here at the park today and none more so than the Canadians.
00:00:06They've got a whole group of supporters down here and they're making themselves very visible.
00:00:13It's the war paint. Jim's down here from Canada. Apparently this is a tradition in Canada.
00:00:18It's sort of the equivalent of our haka. They put the war paint on and they know what's happening.
00:00:24Just waiting for the teams to come out on the field.
00:00:27Everyone's very happy. It's amazing what the sun does. It brings out the warmer side of everyone's nature.
00:00:33Calling today's game is Keith Quinn and Graham Williams.
00:00:41And certainly McLean Park in Napier looking a picture for this afternoon's match.
00:00:46And there's the new stand. You remember the old stand here at McLean Park?
00:00:49It was burnt down and this is the new structure which has been put up in its place.
00:00:56And it is a magnificent sporting facility.
00:00:59And it really has lifted McLean Park from what was a good, solid provincial ground
00:01:06into something rather special for New Zealand rugby.
00:01:09And of course cricket, where there'll be a one-day international on this ground next year on the England tour of New Zealand.
00:01:14The ground is a little slippery. Graham Williams, former All Black, who has walked up the ground today.
00:01:19Graham, it is a bit slippery up there in the centre, isn't it?
00:01:22Yes, when I actually walked across here about two hours ago, it was quite wet where the cricket pitch has been.
00:01:27And because of a lot of the rain that they've had here in the last two days,
00:01:31and obviously with no wind up here, the ground is actually quite soggy in the middle.
00:01:36So, Graham Williams, your thoughts about this match?
00:01:38Because with the ground being a bit damp, that must favour the Canadians, surely?
00:01:43One would think so, but I think the Tongan side has come out here, you know, very keen to have a win too.
00:01:48And in their last game against the Canadians, they had a fairly big win,
00:01:52and I think they'll be looking to repeat that performance.
00:02:01Canada brings a team to this match that has a spread of youth and experience in the backs.
00:02:05Number 12, Spence McTavish, has first played for his country, wait for it, 17 years ago.
00:02:10And the captain in lock hands, the goody, has been in Team Canada since 1974.
00:02:14You may remember him turning up for Cardiff against the All Blacks in 1978.
00:02:18On the other hand, number 10, Gareth Rees, is only 19.
00:02:21Mark Wyatt, the fullback, is a big kicker.
00:02:23Pat Palmer is a speedy winger.
00:02:25And look out for number 8, Glenn Innes.
00:02:27The Canadians really rate him as a tough, hard number 8 forward.
00:02:30The Tongan team, they've got a couple of veterans too.
00:02:33The lock, Tuihale Maka, is 38 years of age.
00:02:36And 37-year-old Faka Hauvalu is the captain.
00:02:40Both were veterans of Tonga's win over Australia in 1973.
00:02:44Their most famous game in rugby history.
00:02:47Talai Fafita is the halfback. He shocked the Welsh for the try last year.
00:02:50And a key man could be Fuka Kitikahaeho, number 12.
00:02:53He's a veteran of five years, senior player in Wellington.
00:02:56A real crash ball specialist.
00:03:01Teams are on the field.
00:03:02You can see the Tongans will play in red jerseys.
00:03:05Canada also plays in red.
00:03:07But for today, they've agreed to switch to play in white.
00:03:10And there on the end is Spike McTavish, Spence McTavish.
00:03:14He's the man who was the veteran of so many games for Canada.
00:03:18Beginning way back in 1970.
00:03:21And 37 years of age.
00:03:23And the 38-year-old in the Tongan team, Graham Williams, is hope for us all.
00:03:27Well, I think I might be able to make a comeback, surely.
00:03:30There's the opposition for the Tongan team.
00:03:34He's come to New Zealand, incidentally, with only two sets of jerseys.
00:03:37I asked this morning one of the officials about the financial state of rugby in the country.
00:03:41And they say it's a very poor financial situation.
00:03:45So they've only bought two sets of jerseys.
00:03:47So they won't be able to swap.
00:03:49And there's the captain, Faka Hauvalu, to the right.
00:03:51One of the most famous players in the kingdom of Tonga.
00:03:55Coming up now, the national anthems of the countries of today's two teams.
00:04:03["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:04:33["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:05:04O Canada, the Canadian national anthem.
00:05:07The captain hands the goodie right on the end here, nearest to us.
00:05:13Tongan captain, Faka Hauvalu.
00:05:16["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:05:33["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:05:39["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:05:45["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:05:51["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:05:57["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:06:03["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:06:11So that was very, very impressive.
00:06:13The discipline of the Tongan team.
00:06:15And there is Faka Hauvalu meeting today's referee, Clive Norling.
00:06:18The Tongan team is going to form up and have a sipi tau,
00:06:23which is the Tongan equivalent of the haka, the war cry.
00:06:28And here it comes. It's the sipi tau.
00:06:30Here's the captain, Faka Hauvalu, who's going to lead.
00:06:32["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:06:37["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:07:08["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:07:14There's the Canadian captain, Hans de Goody,
00:07:16who's a 34-year-old, 1 meter 95 tall.
00:07:20That's nearly 6 feet 5 inches tall.
00:07:22And he's from the James Bay Club in Victoria.
00:07:24That's on Vancouver Island.
00:07:26Hans de Goody, Faka Hauvalu, 37 years of age.
00:07:29He'll be off the back of the line-out man
00:07:31who made his debut for Tonga 14 years ago.
00:07:37["The Star-Spangled Banner"]
00:07:40So it's glorious conditions at McLean Park,
00:07:43except for the slightly slippery ground,
00:07:45more or less where the cricket pitch is,
00:07:47and that's to the left of the halfway line.
00:07:49And that's the team area where Canada will defend the first half.
00:07:53Number 12, Spence McTavish.
00:07:55Number 15, their fullback, Mark Wyatt.
00:08:00Today's referee, one of the best-known international referees in the game,
00:08:06all the way from Wales.
00:08:08He's been here before.
00:08:09And he begins this match, Clive Norling,
00:08:11and Mark Wyatt, the fullback,
00:08:13begins this match between Canada and Tonga.
00:08:16And it's kicked straight to number 10 for the Tongan team,
00:08:19Alemon Leava, and he's put the ball into touch.
00:08:22This is a 28-year-old, the goal kicker in the team,
00:08:24and he has a 17-year-old brother in the side as well.
00:08:28And his first kick returned to touch on the 22.
00:08:32Very little wind here at McLean Park.
00:08:34Really, it's not going to be a problem.
00:08:36Now, the man to make the throw is Mark Cardinal.
00:08:44Clive Norling, he's straight and disciplined.
00:08:48Up back is Ian Stewart.
00:08:50And Canada have got awkward ball first time.
00:08:52Barlow comes through, so too does Kinifutu, the number 8 forward.
00:08:56Back now to Wyatt.
00:08:58He's trying the big drop goal. He's got a big boot.
00:09:00And that was a pretty good effort by the fly half standoff, Gareth Rees.
00:09:06Touchdown by Tali Etiaki, and a restart from the 22.
00:09:09Warmer All Black, Graeme Williams, watching here today.
00:09:12Yes, and it looks as though Canada are hopefully going to try
00:09:15and put some weight on the Tongan side pretty quickly.
00:09:17But a few exciting things to come here, I think.
00:09:22Leava kicks off.
00:09:25This is the half-back, Talai Fafita.
00:09:27Up forward is Te Uta.
00:09:31Now, he's possibly a little easier to recognise because of his slightly lighter coloured hair.
00:09:36It's called kelo up in Tonga, and it's a fairish hair.
00:09:40Like certain groups of the Polynesians of New Zealand, for instance,
00:09:44the Maoris have a ginger-headed strain, if you like.
00:09:48And so here's Tapaleti Te Uta, and he's wearing number 6.
00:09:52Number 8 for Canada is Glenn Ennis.
00:09:55Dene played that with his hand, the referee wasn't looking.
00:09:57This is Stewart, away to another kick from Gareth Rees,
00:10:01and Etiaki is waiting.
00:10:05McTavish has the full-back, that's the goal line.
00:10:17An interesting situation probably going to arise here
00:10:20because I believe the Canadian side actually have a move
00:10:23that may come up here with a scrum right in front of the post,
00:10:26so it could be an interesting scrum.
00:10:27That's right, Graham, we've heard about this.
00:10:29They have a situation for a put-in on their own where they have a 10-man scrum,
00:10:32but they're not going to try it this time.
00:10:34They've got their backs out.
00:10:35They did it four times in their match against the United States
00:10:38and secured two pushover tries.
00:10:40OK, they're going for the pushover with just the 8-man shove,
00:10:42and that looks good enough.
00:10:44Stewart, that's a try for the Canadian half-back, Ian Stewart.
00:10:50They didn't need the 10-man shove.
00:10:52Ian Stewart's in for a try number one for Canada.
00:11:01You can see Stewart, he's normally a centre.
00:11:03He's in for exactly this reason, the big strength that he has.
00:11:07The work was done for him in the second row by the players
00:11:10as they drove this Tongan scrum, smashed it open, and Stewart got the try.
00:11:15Well, I certainly think it was great ball control
00:11:18by the Canadian side, and I think Glen Innes on the back of the scrum
00:11:22really controlled that ball well,
00:11:24but the Tongan side started to disintegrate quite badly there.
00:11:31The kick is converted from in front of the post by full-back Mark Wyatt,
00:11:35and Canada are away to a good start, and they look pretty impressive,
00:11:39and they lead by six points to nil.
00:11:48Eddie's behind me.
00:11:55So this is Alamuni Leava'a, and he will kick off from halfway.
00:12:09Good start for the Canadian team.
00:12:11The goody will be satisfied, I guess, to have scored after just three minutes.
00:12:17Again.
00:12:23OK, Fafita, what a good pass that was to Leava'a.
00:12:27Now Talai Fafita, the half-back, number nine,
00:12:30is a very, very experienced player too in the Tongan team,
00:12:33and he's regarded in the kingdom as one of the star players,
00:12:37Talai Fafita, number nine, so that was a very good pick-up.
00:12:40That's Bill Hanson in the front row.
00:12:44And he's marking Soke Matua Puaka.
00:12:56Kinifotu, number eight, going back towards the end of the line-out.
00:13:01This is Mark Cardinal.
00:13:03No.
00:13:08Affected on the Canadian side, and that's Fotu out to Fafita.
00:13:13Leava'a, the high ball, trying to test Mark Wyatt.
00:13:17A lot of...
00:13:2110-metre circle.
00:13:2710-metre circle, it's a chance for Canada to clear.
00:13:30Man on the ground.
00:13:32Yes, and it's certainly a great kick there,
00:13:35but the Tongan side just a little bit quick to get into the gap there,
00:13:38and the Tonga, of course, will be looking at this stage
00:13:41to try and get back into the game,
00:13:43but just about all the games we've seen in the last few days,
00:13:46there's someone been injured in the first two or three minutes,
00:13:49and one wonders how some of these teams warm up.
00:13:51That's true, Graham.
00:13:52A very good start by the Canadian team.
00:13:54In fact, some of those games yesterday,
00:13:56the one in Christchurch and the one in Australia in particular,
00:13:59extremely long games because of the injuries.
00:14:02The conditions up here were quite cold this morning,
00:14:05and it would have been important to actually have a good warm-up.
00:14:08This is Eddie Evans, who's 240 pounds.
00:14:11He's the front-row prop forward.
00:14:13And as the play resumes on this lovely Hawke's Bay afternoon,
00:14:17the ground looking a real picture,
00:14:19it'll be a chance for Mark Wyatt to clear.
00:14:23Oh, quick throw-in.
00:14:26Tuihelemaka was number four.
00:14:29Tongans are going in pretty well here.
00:14:31They're driving on well here.
00:14:32Their strut might have broken up in that early one.
00:14:34Stewart gets it clear now to Glenn Ennis, out to Vizon.
00:14:38The full-back is up.
00:14:39That's Mark Wyatt.
00:14:41That's Liaba.
00:14:44And Pukka trying to go through there as well.
00:14:48And it's all a little bit scrappy,
00:14:50but at least Tonga are in there competing at the moment.
00:14:56The Canadian front row there, you see, shaping up.
00:15:00We've got Bill Hanson.
00:15:02He's the man with a bit of a bay window just above his shorts.
00:15:07That's him number three.
00:15:09Eddie Evans is number one, and the hooker is Mark Cardinal.
00:15:12That's him number three.
00:15:13Eddie Evans is number one, and the hooker is Mark Cardinal.
00:15:16And a very big, burly front row indeed.
00:15:23So, Stewart.
00:15:39Pressure is on the Tongan scrum.
00:15:41Stewart back to Wyatt.
00:15:47Wyatt is equally good at the kick.
00:15:49Actually, this is Gareth Rees.
00:15:51So, look for Wyatt.
00:15:53You see Rees' finger taped up there.
00:15:55Now he's got a cracked right little finger.
00:15:59So he's playing under some difficulty today.
00:16:04So, two here, Hale Maka.
00:16:06Out now to Talai Papita.
00:16:08Now this is Kirika Haiho.
00:16:10And Fooka, he's the man with the crash ball.
00:16:12He's a well-known player in Wellington,
00:16:14and that's a good work by the Tongan team.
00:16:16And Graham, there were some gaps in the Canadian team there.
00:16:19If he'd have been a little more subtle, Fooka, he might have got through number 12.
00:16:22And, you know, watching him play in Wellington,
00:16:24he's very, very strong on the burst,
00:16:26and so I'm sure the Tongan will be trying to get support alongside him.
00:16:30Come on, everybody!
00:16:33Come on, everybody!
00:16:38And that's the clearance from Mark Wyatt.
00:16:44Don't snap, boys, come on!
00:16:52You can handle it, you can come around.
00:16:54You can handle it, you can come around.
00:16:57Oh, boy, what a take.
00:16:59That's right, Graham.
00:17:00This is Politelli to Hale Maka.
00:17:08Talai Papita.
00:17:10And offside.
00:17:14And this will be a shot at goal.
00:17:16Yes, the signal's gone in.
00:17:21And the chance for Tonga to close that gap.
00:17:23Six points to nil, the Canadians lead
00:17:25as they try to win Stewart, converted by Mark Wyatt.
00:17:28Well, it's quite an important kick for Tonga now
00:17:30because they need to get back into this game
00:17:33with the points that they gave away under the post.
00:17:36And I just wonder, you know, with these new balls that everyone's talking about,
00:17:40with these Mitre balls,
00:17:42and a lot of teams seem to have had trouble kicking,
00:17:44and especially yesterday,
00:17:45so it will be interesting to see how the Tongans handle this ball
00:17:49because what we've heard is that the ball is very, very light
00:17:53and you can't really hit it hard.
00:17:55That's what they've been saying.
00:17:56He's a left footer, he's Leovar,
00:17:58and the best way to kick these balls, we understand,
00:18:02is to stroke it, caress it, rather than thump it.
00:18:11Oh, gee, that hit the post, I think,
00:18:12and that was a pretty good effort,
00:18:14and through came Teuta.
00:18:16Here's Mark Wyatt.
00:18:19Sorry, that's, of course, Gareth Rees, number 10.
00:18:23So this is Wyatt.
00:18:24Remember Wyatt, the fullback with the headband.
00:18:28These two nations have met once before,
00:18:30back in 1974 when the Tongans toured to Canada,
00:18:33and Tonga won by 40 to 14.
00:18:37That's the fullback to Etiaki up.
00:18:39There's Rees getting crunched by Teuta.
00:18:44Now it's back to Ian Stewart.
00:18:47Awaita McTavish.
00:18:51Suwani Asi.
00:19:03Spence McTavish, the Canadian second 5'8".
00:19:10There he is.
00:19:11They say he's challenging Buzz Moore's record.
00:19:13Buzz Moore is the oldest international footballer,
00:19:16and he was a 42-year-old.
00:19:18Spence McTavish getting to within five years of that record.
00:19:22OK, here's the Tongan team,
00:19:24and Pukekiri Kahaeho now out to the left wing,
00:19:28Suwani Asi.
00:19:44That's Eddie Evans.
00:19:51And Papito left that one bounce.
00:20:02You can see that the goodie's been around.
00:20:04You just get a look at those ears, Graham.
00:20:06That beauty, isn't it?
00:20:07That's your eye.
00:20:14Wyatt has not found his touch.
00:20:15This is Tali Etiaki.
00:20:19And not nearly as impressive a returning kick from the fullback,
00:20:23Tali Etiaki.
00:20:31Hakata Tupou, the prop.
00:20:33Hakata, of course, is the Tongan equivalent of Hector.
00:20:39He's the tight head.
00:20:43Sixteen, four, twenty-five.
00:20:48That's the 38-year-old.
00:20:58A little tussle going on here with Te Uta,
00:21:01and there's Ennis and Walu.
00:21:04Pretty tough physical contest in there.
00:21:14It's just a little indecisive there from Clyde Morning.
00:21:16I think it looked a bit like a penalty for a while.
00:21:19Yes, he was waving his arms around in the air there for a while.
00:21:25Prop on the near side for Tonga is Motua Puaka,
00:21:28who shocked the rugby world by scoring two tries on Cardiff Arms Park
00:21:31for the World 15 in their centenary match of the Welsh Rugby Union.
00:21:34So a couple of these Tongan players have been around.
00:21:38That's Rhys's kick again, testing Etiaki.
00:21:41Oh, that's an early tackle from Paul Vaison.
00:21:44Not really a very strong one.
00:21:47That's Vaison, and he's penalised.
00:21:54So the referee, of course, comes up the field.
00:21:56You have the choice of the kick, where it's taken, or it bounces.
00:22:04The hooker is Amoni Afu.
00:22:12That's Kenny Fortu, number eight.
00:22:15Midfield in Tongan territory.
00:22:18He is a very good little half-back.
00:22:20Here's Talai Papita. He's got the bounce.
00:22:23Oh, a bit of a hospital pass that he put inside to Whaka Hauvalu.
00:22:29The advantage being played by Clyde Morning.
00:22:33A great run by Papita there, but it was just a pity
00:22:37that the following players knocked the ball off.
00:22:41It was an extremely good attacking position for Tonga.
00:22:43What do you think of the position of these Tongans in the front row here?
00:22:46They don't look as though they're getting it quite right, do they?
00:22:48No, they're very, very high, and they're getting lifted out of the scrum.
00:22:54Oh, Rhys dropped. Caught by Te Uta.
00:22:57Now Stewart.
00:23:00Yes.
00:23:05Come on, boys. Come on. Big set here.
00:23:09Injury there. Player down.
00:23:11And the Tongans, after that early setback when their scrum was in a bit of disarray.
00:23:20And so I guess that we could say, Graham Williams, that they've done better
00:23:23since that opening scrum.
00:23:25But it doesn't look right there in the front row, does it?
00:23:27And I think they've got a little bit of work to tidy up there to keep the balance there.
00:23:31Because I think going right back to the first scrum,
00:23:34the Tongan scrum started to disintegrate just a little bit there when the pressure came on.
00:23:39And I think that looking at the Canadian side, they're a very, very big scrum.
00:23:43And Tonga really have got to, in the front row,
00:23:46have got to get a little bit lower and a little bit tighter.
00:23:48Their binding's got to improve to keep it tight.
00:23:52That already looks a better one from the Tongans, but they're still up a bit.
00:23:58Fuka. Number 13 is Sami Mohi.
00:24:00That's his first handler. He dropped it.
00:24:02And that again is Leovar.
00:24:04And he's trying to make progress there, but it was lost forward by number 13,
00:24:09Sami Mohi, the centre.
00:24:17That's Sawaki Matua-Puaka's not going too well in the front row there.
00:24:23That's Reese.
00:24:28This is the 19-year-old. He's a big man for a stand-off half or a fly half.
00:24:32He's 15 stone, 210 pounds.
00:24:35It's his first year out of school. He's just 19 years of age.
00:24:38His father played for Thanethley years ago.
00:24:42He has the Welsh name, of course, Gareth Reese.
00:24:46OK, there's the hooker, Apu.
00:24:48Leovar out to Fuka.
00:24:52He's given it straight in there to Roy Redoux, the Canadian flanker, number 7.
00:24:57See the man going down the far side of the scrum, Roy Redoux.
00:25:08He was the young man who went to school in New Zealand, in Dunedin.
00:25:14So this is a good intrusion from the back line, from full-back.
00:25:16This is Pat Palmer, number 14, Stewart.
00:25:22Awesome shaky defence here. Stewart still going in frame.
00:25:26Watches his big frame to score.
00:25:37Rob Frame, the flanker, scores Canada's second try.
00:25:42Look at this. It was a very good, sharp intrusion from full-back by White.
00:25:45Pat Palmer, the right winger, made good speed.
00:25:49See how White stays in support, but the defence was really in tatters.
00:25:53And Stewart was allowed to go through.
00:25:55That tackle, this one, and one more, I think. Yes, indeed.
00:25:58And then he made his pass to Rob Frame, the flanker.
00:26:03Well, certainly looking at it from this direction, it was a great incisive run there.
00:26:07But the players keep coming in support.
00:26:09And I thought at this stage here that the ball may have gone wide,
00:26:13but they brought the ball back in with the support coming very, very quickly.
00:26:17And once again, we see the big dive in the corner.
00:26:20And I think that was a great team try by Canada.
00:26:26So here's White.
00:26:35Bended away. Ten points to nil to Team Canada over Tonga.
00:26:50WHISTLE BLOWS
00:27:11So, Leovar kicks off.
00:27:15A quick bounce. It's Glenn Ennis.
00:27:18This is the young man who has aspirations to be an actor.
00:27:23He's got the looks, I guess.
00:27:25And he's the back of the Canadian scrum.
00:27:27He also had some time in New Zealand a few years ago.
00:27:29Glenn Ennis.
00:27:33Amoni Afu, deflected by Cassie Fine.
00:27:36Leovar, full back up.
00:27:39Now, this is the right winger.
00:27:41But look at that from Team Canada.
00:27:43Up towards halfway.
00:27:45And there's a bit of a tussle going on out here.
00:27:47Referee Norlin has got it sussed out.
00:27:49And the full back, Tali Etiaki.
00:27:52And now, this is Paul Bizon.
00:27:58Now, this is Tali Etiaki and Paul Bizon
00:28:01being called out by referee Clive Norlin.
00:28:03That, I think, is the message that you better sort it out.
00:28:09The referee is now coming over to consult with the touch judge.
00:28:24Fairly friendly consultation there between Clive Norlin and the touch judge
00:28:28is another Welshman, Derek Bevan.
00:28:31Well, in fact, he took the advice of the touch judge, I think,
00:28:34and awarded the penalty against Canada.
00:28:48Three penalties to one awarded their way.
00:28:50Well, I think, too, watching the touch judge there standing with his flag out
00:28:53and, initially, when the touch judge said,
00:28:57I think everyone was thinking, well, you know,
00:28:59who possibly is this going to be awarded against?
00:29:01And I think the Tonga would feel justified in the situation at this stage
00:29:06that they're getting the kick at goal.
00:29:09Comments today coming from former all-back, Graham Williams.
00:29:17Shot at goal coming up from Alemone Levar.
00:29:21Now, there is a classic example of what we're talking about
00:29:23with these Mitre balls that are the balls which will be used.
00:29:27Now, he really thumped that a bit harder than perhaps he should have
00:29:30and you see it curled away.
00:29:31When you mishit these balls, Graham, they seem to fly away at ridiculous angles.
00:29:34We're not used to seeing people miss by as much as we've seen in these few days.
00:29:38Yes, and, you know, where would you see Michael Liner miss so many in a row?
00:29:42This is Tali Etiaki.
00:29:54Well, surprisingly, Tonga are the only team in the world
00:29:57to have been awarded this title.
00:29:59Now, this is the first time in a long time
00:30:01that the Tonga have been awarded this title.
00:30:03It's the first time in a long time
00:30:05that the Tonga have been awarded this title.
00:30:08Well, surprisingly, Tonga are doing better in the line-outs
00:30:11and that will be the reason that Canada have shortened the line-out for the first time.
00:30:15The thrower is Mark Cardinal.
00:30:24Taken by Ennis. That's a good controlled work.
00:30:28That's number one, Eddie Evans.
00:30:31Stewart, running wide. Let's see how the Tongans cope.
00:30:38Matt Palmer, number 14.
00:30:48Hans de Goody.
00:30:50Ennis.
00:30:52He was crunched by Suwane Asi.
00:31:02That's Leobard there.
00:31:04Not making very fast progress
00:31:06but it's a penalty for Tonga.
00:31:08Someone's had their shirt torn right off the back.
00:31:10One of the Canadian team.
00:31:15Injury.
00:31:18This is Suwane Asi, the winger.
00:31:24One of the Canadians having his shirt torn off his back.
00:31:26This is the young man who wants to make it in acting.
00:31:28So let's see how he shapes up.
00:31:30It's the first time I've seen jerseys, you know.
00:31:37In fact, with buttons up the front.
00:31:39Is that a story, Keith?
00:31:45So, Glenn Ennis.
00:31:49Played for Grammar in Auckland about four years ago for a spell in that season.
00:31:54When he was out on some sort of player swap system.
00:31:59So he's now getting a replacement shirt.
00:32:10So this is Suwane Asi who was a rather vigorous charge.
00:32:14He came through on Ennis actually.
00:32:16That was the collision.
00:32:17Remember, he came charging through on Glenn Ennis.
00:32:22So ten points to nil. Two tries to Canada.
00:32:25Stewart scored the first. He's the halfback.
00:32:27And look at that.
00:32:29Seem to have a problem with the shoulder of Suwane Asi.
00:32:32Could be dislocated shoulder at Grammar.
00:32:34Yes, it certainly looks like it.
00:32:37He came in fairly hard there and he was leading with his shoulder.
00:32:41And he really, when he hit Ennis, he was going quite fast.
00:32:49So hands the goody. And look at those hands that he has.
00:32:52They're great, huge things.
00:32:54And he's a very fine player indeed.
00:32:57As I say, spent a time in Wales playing.
00:32:59He's Dutch born. Born in Amsterdam.
00:33:05And here is his opposite number.
00:33:07Also very experienced.
00:33:09Faka Hovalu.
00:33:10So the applause you hear is for number 14, Suwane Asi, leaving the field.
00:33:25So that's a sad blow for the Tongan team.
00:33:31And this is Lemeke Vapula.
00:33:39So that's the kick out by Tali Etiaki.
00:33:47Lineouts are still favouring Tonga.
00:33:49That's seven lineouts to three now.
00:33:51So they're getting good ball.
00:33:52And that's a bit of a surprise.
00:33:53Well taken by fullback Mark Wyatt.
00:33:57Tali Etiaki.
00:33:58Look, they're going to open it up here.
00:34:00Oh no, it's Leovar who just puts it out from behind the 22.
00:34:06About 24 minutes gone in this match.
00:34:08Canada leading by 10 to 0.
00:34:10And I think that Canada are really looking better than Tonga at the moment.
00:34:14They're getting the ball together.
00:34:16They're driving better.
00:34:17And the tackling's got to improve on Tonga's part.
00:34:20Here's a drive. That's Bill Hanson.
00:34:24Out now to Reece.
00:34:27A little chipped that time.
00:34:28He had men outside him.
00:34:31That's the fullback, Tali Etiaki.
00:34:33And over goes the side.
00:34:35And here's the Tongan physiotherapist, Jerry Fletcher, who's an American.
00:34:40He's trying to get onto the field to put a message in.
00:34:44Here's the replacement player, Lemeke Vapula.
00:34:47And he is a winger.
00:34:51But out to the Canadian backs.
00:34:53That's Vizam.
00:34:55Wide is left out.
00:34:56There was possibility of an intercept there.
00:34:58And the ball on the way to Tommy Woods.
00:34:59This is McTavish.
00:35:10Tongan second row going in there.
00:35:11Number five is Kasi Fine.
00:35:13He's the youngest in there.
00:35:14Scrum at 23.
00:35:16Some real old-timers in that pack.
00:35:1838-year-old Tui Halimaka.
00:35:2035-year-old Matua Puaka.
00:35:22And Tupaka Movalu, who's, when I asked him his age this morning,
00:35:27gave me a lovely smile and shrugged his shoulders.
00:35:29He's listed as anything between 34 and 37.
00:35:47Props.
00:35:48Up.
00:35:49This side, lad.
00:35:50Up.
00:35:51Get your feet right here.
00:35:52Forward and up.
00:35:57So, tallied for feet to number nine.
00:36:00Kenny Fortu is the number eight forward.
00:36:08Just looking at that scrum there,
00:36:10the Matua Puaka is really getting pushed out by Bill Hanson
00:36:15in those scrums.
00:36:16And I think if you watch the next one,
00:36:17watch, you know, just what happens.
00:36:20OK, that's Roy Redoux.
00:36:24Stewart trying to get it.
00:36:25Now he has.
00:36:27Now, Therese.
00:36:28Now, this is the big high ball going out towards the winger,
00:36:32Fialea.
00:36:34And Kutusi Fialea has missed that catch up.
00:36:38And that's something that the Canadians have used to a good advantage,
00:36:42the high ball, in the first moments of this game.
00:36:45Yes, it's a pity too,
00:36:46because the two of those big kicks that have gone up,
00:36:48the Tongans really have stopped to look at the opposition running at them
00:36:51and taken their eyes off the ball and it's gone to ground.
00:36:54And it's put them really in a defensive position again.
00:37:00Clive Norling, of course.
00:37:01He's a famous referee here.
00:37:05The crowd is thoroughly enjoying this match here at Napier.
00:37:08And you can see that the public of Hawke's Bay have really supported this game.
00:37:11It's not a big game in terms of the world situation,
00:37:14but they've packed that stand pretty well.
00:37:16Much more so than I think the Auckland public yesterday,
00:37:18who stayed away in their drove from a match at Eden Park,
00:37:21which turned out to be a very fine match between Romania and Zimbabwe.
00:37:33So that stand across the other side, too, is pretty well full.
00:37:37I would say we'd have ten or twelve thousand people at McLean Park this afternoon.
00:37:42It's a very famous ground, of course.
00:37:44A ground where Hawke's Bay played its fantastic era of the Ranfurly Shields,
00:37:49beginning 20 years ago and going for three full seasons,
00:37:53defending the Ranfurly Shield.
00:37:55And now for the first time in history,
00:37:57a Canadian team is on the field in New Zealand.
00:37:59They've tried over the years to have a match and a tour to New Zealand,
00:38:03but it's only through the World Cup that we see a Canadian national team in New Zealand.
00:38:08So there's Matua Puaka on the near side.
00:38:11He's having a really tough time in that front row.
00:38:14He is not at all comfortable.
00:38:17Big stamp from a candidate.
00:38:21That's the corner flag in there.
00:38:26Now it's a penalty try.
00:38:28The second penalty try of the World Cup, awarded by referee Clive Norling.
00:38:32And it was much the same reason that the referee awarded one against Italy
00:38:36at Eden Park the other day.
00:38:38A push over scrum, a try seemed likely,
00:38:41until one of the opposition rushed forward to stop the pick-up being made.
00:38:46Now look at Ian Stewart, number nine.
00:38:48He's about to go in and make the pick-up,
00:38:50and it's under Glenn Ennis' feet as well,
00:38:52but the Tongans dive in to stop the pick-up being made,
00:38:56thus committing the deliberate to foul, the professional foul.
00:38:59And you see Clive Norling, as he does with the penalty try,
00:39:04awards it under the posts.
00:39:08Clive Norling is never far away from the news,
00:39:11but that was a good decision,
00:39:13and that has cost the Tongans six points now.
00:39:17Sixteen points to nil, the penalty try.
00:39:22Well, most of the Tongans' problem's coming from the scrums,
00:39:25and here once again, they've just completely disintegrated.
00:39:28And, you know, the whole thing is that with these penalty tries,
00:39:31a referee must be sure that a try would have been scored.
00:39:35And I think what we're seeing there is a deliberate infringement again,
00:39:38and as we saw in the first game, a penalty try.
00:39:41Now the coincidence goes a little bit more than that, Graham.
00:39:44The both times the offending player was number seven,
00:39:46the captain of the defending side.
00:39:48It was in a chente at Auckland.
00:39:50It was Faka Halvalo here at Napier.
00:39:53So there he is.
00:39:55Just cost the team more or less six points.
00:39:57Leave it, leave it, leave it!
00:39:59Well, the Tongans are looking a bit ragged here now.
00:40:02Remember from the kick-off,
00:40:04there's a series of alternatives, which the Italians will now know.
00:40:07But this is a scrum.
00:40:12And down goes the veteran, Paula Talitui-Halamaka.
00:40:18Well, you know, one has to watch the kick-off now
00:40:21because you need about six people watching the ball,
00:40:24and I think it's going to be very important in future games now
00:40:27that if the ball goes out on the full,
00:40:30that one must get a hold of the ball and stop those quick...
00:40:33those quick movements by the opposition.
00:40:35So it's going to become a bit of a affair, I believe, around the country.
00:40:40This is Jerry Fletcher, who's an American
00:40:43who's living in semi-retirement in Tonga,
00:40:46and he's taken over the role of the trainer of the Tongan team
00:40:51and been in Vietnam a naval commander
00:40:56of a special crack force in his younger days,
00:41:00now living in Tonga.
00:41:03Jerry Fletcher, 50 years of age.
00:41:07So the Tongans have some problems.
00:41:09They're the South Pacific champions,
00:41:11and it looks like the veteran player in the World Cup 1987,
00:41:18Paula Talitui-Halamaka, looks as though he might be finished for today,
00:41:23and that's great sadness.
00:41:26This man made his debut for Tonga in 1972,
00:41:29and he was part of the Tongan team from the Friendly Islands,
00:41:32which went to Ballymore Oval in 1973,
00:41:35and they lost the first test 30-12,
00:41:37but they shocked Australia by winning the second test 16-11,
00:41:40and the Wallabies were not happy to lose to Tonga.
00:41:43So there are now two replacements on the field.
00:41:46Now this guy coming on, this is John Taha'afe,
00:41:49and he's a very interesting character
00:41:51because he's just been playing in Brisbane last year.
00:41:54He's played in France too, and it was a bit of a surprise to me,
00:41:57bearing in mind his international reputation,
00:41:59to see him not in that Tongan 15 originally.
00:42:02Don't know what the story is, but now he comes into the game
00:42:04to go through at lock.
00:42:06He's normally number eight forward.
00:42:08John Taha'afe, Siuri Taha'afe.
00:42:16Stewart, Greece, Canada leading by 16 points to nil.
00:42:30This is the second try scorer, Rob Frame.
00:42:39Taha'afe, Radu, onto Puka, Ian Stewart.
00:42:46Now he's a centre, and you can see that he's got the speed and strength for a centre.
00:42:50He bursts through, that's the goal line just ahead.
00:42:54Stewart, McTavish, this is Cardinal Lahuka.
00:43:00That's Paul Weiser on the centre.
00:43:03Now they're driving away.
00:43:05Tupou.
00:43:14Well, the Canadiens are sending them back.
00:43:15They've got the big pack, all right, the Canadiens,
00:43:18and Canada will get the put in.
00:43:22Well, a great run of play there by the Canadiens,
00:43:24but it just showed once again that the Tongan side
00:43:28really not coming up in tackling,
00:43:30and the Canadiens are being able to get the ball back over the advantage line,
00:43:34and they certainly put a good drive on Tonga there when they had the ball,
00:43:37and, you know, it just got them in the put in, didn't it, Scott?
00:43:40Well, there's problems in the Tongan second row, too.
00:43:43There's some problems in the second row,
00:43:47There's problems in the Tongan second row, too.
00:43:49There's some backs that aren't as straight.
00:43:57So, Ennis.
00:44:01About 20 metres out from the line.
00:44:05That's Cardinal.
00:44:06Away to Stewart.
00:44:07This is Reece.
00:44:08Drop kick.
00:44:11Pretty good one.
00:44:12Back covering it is Vipula, the replacement player,
00:44:15and then he's a strong drop kicker, this man, Gareth Reece.
00:44:21Scored one against the United States in his international debut.
00:44:24There's his opposite number, Liava.
00:44:28This is Tommy Woods, the winger.
00:44:32Into Glenn Ennis.
00:44:36Canada very dominant here.
00:44:38Weizen.
00:44:39Good, strong tackle.
00:44:43By Puka.
00:44:44This is Liava.
00:44:45With him is D'Utah.
00:44:51Now Talai Fafita.
00:44:53Very sharp-looking half-back.
00:44:56Well, that was unfortunate.
00:44:57It was just forward.
00:44:58Otherwise, the full-back, Tali Etiap, he could have been away.
00:45:01That's the hooker, Amadi Etiap.
00:45:05Scrums have told the story of the game.
00:45:07The Canadians have the power.
00:45:08They've won 10 scrums to 4.
00:45:12They've used the ball and the drives pretty well.
00:45:16Haven't seen their 10-man scrum yet.
00:45:18I'm waiting to see that one.
00:45:20Can you believe that, Graeme, a 10-man scrum?
00:45:22Well, I've seen one or two before,
00:45:24but probably never at an international level.
00:45:27Although I believe that there were one or two variations
00:45:30that were pretty close to it.
00:45:31But, of course, the laws have changed.
00:45:34The rules have changed.
00:45:35The rules have changed.
00:45:36The rules have changed.
00:45:37The rules have changed.
00:45:38The rules have changed.
00:45:39The rules have changed.
00:45:40The rules have changed.
00:45:41The rules have changed.
00:45:42The rules have changed.
00:45:43The rules have changed.
00:45:44The rules have changed.
00:45:45The rules have changed.
00:45:46The rules have changed.

00:56:54The rules have changed.
00:56:55There can be no more replacements in the Tongan team.
00:57:07I think looking at Futu down there, looking at the back of his leg,
00:57:11and it is looking like an ugly standing problem.
00:57:16Well, that would be a disaster if they were to continue the game with only 14 players.
00:57:22So Kenny Futu is the injured player.
00:57:36The man in the overcoat there is Malefihi Tuku'ahu.
00:57:41He is the coach of the Tongan team.
00:57:43He is looking very pensive at his situation with his team down by 16 points to nil.
00:57:56So number 8, Kenny Futu, is carrying on.
00:57:58But whether he is going to be much good, we will see.
00:58:14Time, time. By 16 points to nil.
00:58:33Well, Graham Williams from All Black 1967 to 69.
00:58:37What have you thought of the first half of this match?
00:58:40Well, I certainly think that it has been all Canada's game, really.
00:58:43And the points are reflecting on the board there.
00:58:45Because I think technically they have been doing things better than Tonga.
00:58:49And, you know, just I think half of Tonga's problems are really coming from that front row situation
00:58:54with Tupou and Matua Pouaka actually just really not being able to hold the Canadian scrum.
00:59:03And this is reflecting on the fact that Fafita and Liava are just not actually getting the ball clean.
00:59:11They're not being able to put the ball back and getting it back in front of their forwards.
00:59:15And it's only the two breaks on Fafita that have really kept them there.
00:59:27Gary, you must be pleased, 16 points up in the first half.
00:59:30Well, I'm a little relieved. We're over the magic 13-point barrier.
00:59:33But I'm not really pleased with the way the team's playing.
00:59:35We're fine in the set pieces, but it's the quality of the opposition that gives us a lot of possession.
00:59:40But we're not being very fluid out there.
00:59:42And if we were to go on and impress the way I said before the game,
00:59:45we've got to show we can handle the ball a little better and run second phase a little better
00:59:49and show that we have good support play.
00:59:51And that hasn't really happened in the first half.
00:59:53Our set play has been very solid. We've out-scrummaged the Tongans.
00:59:56They've over-replaced two people because of injuries.
00:59:58He'd beat up physically.
00:59:59I think they're slowing the game down to have a rest, and we want to speed things up.
01:00:03So we have to show the discipline, just like the All Blacks showed against Italy,
01:00:07where even though they're up a lot of points, we've got to continue to play good rugby
01:00:10and show the good passing movements we're capable of doing.
01:00:16Let's build on that. We can't sit on that. We must keep going forward.
01:00:21Good stuff. Good tactical kicking. Fine touch.
01:00:24The center of the ball went out 10 yards up the field and stayed in 50 yards up the field.
01:00:28You know they can counterattack, so why give them that opportunity?
01:00:32It's really good stuff from you guys.
01:00:34Spike, have you got anything you want to say?
01:00:36No, it's good. That's fine.
01:00:37He's bent now more than ever, guys.
01:00:39Those tackles have to count. They've got to be crunching.
01:00:41Everything you do moves forward, right?
01:00:44You tackle that guy, your heart is rocking. He's going back.
01:00:47They've already had two injuries. Their number eight's hurting now.
01:00:50There's other guys out there on their field that are hurting.
01:00:53So keep punishing them.
01:00:54The more that goes off, the easier our chances are of scoring.
01:00:57I believe that number eight's still hurting, so when we get in their end, run some back role play.
01:01:01Some good ones. Make him tackle you.
01:01:04It doesn't matter if we pass the ball. Make him tackle you.
01:01:06Make him crunch. We'll put it back and we'll take it on from there.
01:01:09There's been some great forward efforts where we just keep driving and driving and driving.
01:01:13Work to stay on your feet. Work to get that ball back.
01:01:16I believe that three where we were close to the touchline should have kept going.
01:01:19I don't think we should have worried about the touchline so much as just the drive.
01:01:22We had him. We had the ball. What more do you want?
01:01:25It doesn't matter if we're a yard from the touchline. We're driving forward anyway, okay?
01:01:29We've got these things to do. Let's do them.
01:01:31Some great work out there, guys. It's really been positive.
01:01:34Let's keep it up. Forty minutes to go of everything you've done.
01:01:36Come on, boys. Come on. You're making history right now.
01:01:39Come on. On three. One, two, three.
01:01:42One, two, three. Canada!
01:01:45Fantastic reaction there to be able to listen in to Team Canada.
01:01:50Not every team will allow us to go in like that at halftime,
01:01:53but top marks to the Canadians to give us and you at home
01:01:57an indication of what it's like in the huddle at halftime in an international rugby match.
01:02:01The man speaking was Hans de Goody. He was Mr. Big of the Canadian team.
01:02:05He's their captain. He's a very experienced player.
01:02:09His wife presented him with a baby this week on Wednesday,
01:02:13so little Jake de Goody, I'm sure, will be very proud to see his dad in action
01:02:18here at McLean Park in the World Cup.
01:02:31Second half coming up shortly, and the Tongan team with two men off.
01:02:34You heard from Hans de Goody. He sussed it out pretty well.
01:02:37Two men off the field, and they're number eight.
01:02:39Kinifoto, you see him there to the left. They think he's hurting pretty bad.
01:02:43He doesn't look as though he's 100%,
01:02:46but they have really got a tough, tough job ahead of them, the Tongan team.
01:03:07You notice that the halftimes in these matches in the Rugby World Cup
01:03:11are timed out to exactly five minutes. That's for international television audience.
01:03:15This match going live to Japan today.
01:03:18So the referees will wait for five minutes.
01:03:22And the second half begins of this Rugby World Cup match
01:03:26from McLean Park in Napier between Canada in the white and Tonga in the red.
01:03:31And then the first 40 minutes, Canada dominated.
01:03:35A play like from this man, Gareth Rees, and the others to lead by 16 to nil.
01:03:41Try in the first few moments by the halfback, Ian Stewart.
01:03:44Then a try by flanker, Rob Crane, number six.
01:03:46Then a penalty try with two conversions added by fullback, Mark Wyatt.
01:03:49And it's 16 to nil to team Canada.
01:03:52But you heard their captain in the halftime huddle.
01:03:54He wants more. He wants more from the team.
01:03:57They're going well, but he wants them to hammer home their advantage.
01:04:05Stewart.
01:04:09Stewart again.
01:04:11Rees.
01:04:13Pat Claver kicks ahead to Etiaki, the fullback.
01:04:17A big 15 stone Rees bounced off of this.
01:04:20Etiaki's handed another one off.
01:04:22So he's a tough guy.
01:04:23Tali Etiaki, the fullback.
01:04:27Come on.
01:04:34Glenn Ennis, number 21.
01:04:37Lineouts in the first half favoured Tonga by nine to eight.
01:04:42Penalties favoured, well, penalties were four each.
01:04:46But the scrums were noticeably in Canada's favour, 13 to nine.
01:04:50But many others were disrupted by the Canada power.
01:05:02Ennis. Stewart.
01:05:04Glenn Ennis again.
01:05:06That's the goody himself.
01:05:10Stewart.
01:05:11Rees.
01:05:12McTavish.
01:05:13Long ball for fullback Wyatt up.
01:05:15Tony Woods.
01:05:21They hook it.
01:05:23And Vizen, the centre, is scored.
01:05:27And that's a fine try from Team Canada.
01:05:35Paul Vizen, the centre three-quarter, makes it 20 points to nil.
01:05:39And that's a good running try from Team Canada.
01:05:45Here it comes.
01:05:46It was the second time Ian Stewart had the ball.
01:05:49From Wyatt, a long cut-out pass from McTavish.
01:05:52Wyatt was up.
01:05:53This is the left wing of Tony Woods.
01:05:55And see his centre, Paul Vizen, with the headband, moving outside him.
01:05:59Then the hook of Cardinal, the fullback again,
01:06:02and into the corner went Paul Vizen.
01:06:07Well, certainly a good take there to keep the try moving there.
01:06:11But if you watch Vizen actually coming across,
01:06:14and he actually crosses right in behind,
01:06:16and it looked as if the pass was going to go that way.
01:06:18But once again, the Canadians switch it back infield.
01:06:21And a great run here.
01:06:22But look at that tackle.
01:06:23It was taken out with the ball just as he passed it.
01:06:26But Vizen, big and strong, just able to get over the line.
01:06:35I guess the only question here is the Tongan defenders' hands on the ball.
01:06:39Let's look.
01:06:41Well, Keith, it certainly looked there that it was he awarding the try
01:06:46from the actual first contact to when he flipped and rolled.
01:06:49I think it would have been from the first contact.
01:06:51There's the try scorer, Paul Vizen.
01:06:53He's from Victoria and Vancouver.
01:06:55That's in Vancouver Island.
01:06:57Wyatt with the conversion.
01:07:00The kicking is not very good.
01:07:02And that's 20 points to nil.
01:07:04I think the Canadians should be more at home with these Mitre balls.
01:07:07The Canadians should be more at home with these Mitre balls
01:07:10because they play all their major rugby back home with the Mitre ball.
01:07:14But Mark Wyatt not able to get that one over.
01:07:16There is an injury.
01:07:17This is Spence McTavish.
01:07:24This is Vizen.
01:07:26You see in the back there, he put that headband on at half time.
01:07:29Here's a little bit of information about him.
01:07:31He's the only salmon fisherman in international rugby.
01:07:34Yes, he's an occupation.
01:07:36He's a salmon fisherman.
01:07:37They call him Buff because his surname, Vizen, rhymes with bison.
01:07:43So he gets Buffalo.
01:07:45It's all very interesting.
01:07:47This is the information from the Team Canada handbook.
01:07:51Here he is from British Columbia where most of his team is from.
01:07:55In fact, 14 of the Canadian side on the field are from British Columbia.
01:08:02And there's Spence McTavish, the 37-year-old,
01:08:05who had a part in that try with a big long cut-out pass.
01:08:15Tonga now down by 20 points.
01:08:17The try was unconverted.
01:08:19Cardinal, who looks a very good hooker.
01:08:27And it's coming for Ian Stewart.
01:08:29Halfback.
01:08:38So this is Gareth Rees.
01:08:39Doesn't seem to be bothered by that little finger injury.
01:08:44See the haircuts there they've got?
01:08:45They're called the Herschel haircuts.
01:08:46We'll talk about that in a moment.
01:08:49Talai Fafita.
01:08:50Fafita.
01:08:57Two or three of the Canadian backs have cut their hair
01:09:00along the side just above the ears.
01:09:02They call them Herschel haircuts
01:09:04after the great black American football player Herschel Walker.
01:09:09In fact, Ian Stewart, the halfback,
01:09:11his nickname is Herschel.
01:09:14He's a great admirer of Herschel Walker.
01:09:16And it runs like this, I guess.
01:09:19Tipped into Rob Crane.
01:09:25Talai Fafita.
01:09:26Awaitu Liava.
01:09:28They've never really let it out to Fukukiri Kahaeho from play,
01:09:32but they haven't had much running ball.
01:09:35And that's Pat Palmer putting it out.
01:09:43Well, I certainly think now the Tongans will be starting
01:09:45to get a little bit frustrated
01:09:46because they've really got no ball going forward.
01:09:48And Canada are just driving and setting the ball up
01:09:51for their half so well.
01:09:52Let's see how they go this time.
01:09:55Centre tries to crash.
01:09:56Sammy Mohi.
01:09:58This is Liava.
01:10:00Pakahao Balo at the 22.
01:10:02Tonga getting warmed up.
01:10:03Fukukiri Kahaeho.
01:10:05This is the replacement.
01:10:08Waipulu.
01:10:09Waipulu.
01:10:17And you hear the crowd here at Napier
01:10:19giving good encouragement to the Tongan team.
01:10:22And that's their second five-eighth.
01:10:23Fukukiri Kahaeho.
01:10:26Now here they are again.
01:10:27And it could be on for a try.
01:10:29To Uta.
01:10:33And referee has singled a try for the Tongans.
01:10:36Talai Fafita was underneath.
01:10:38I think he got it.
01:10:39It was the first five-eighth.
01:10:40Alemoni Liava.
01:10:42And the crowd are delighted to see
01:10:44the Tongans come back into the game.
01:10:53Who actually got the try will be interesting.
01:10:55That's the number eight forward
01:10:56who we thought was hurting.
01:10:57Kinifotu.
01:10:58Pakahao Balo went away from him
01:11:00to Tapoleti to Uta.
01:11:02Then it was the halfback,
01:11:04Talai Fafita.
01:11:05But yes, number seven.
01:11:07And you see him in there.
01:11:08The captain, Pakahao Balo.
01:11:09He scores the try.
01:11:12Well, it certainly looked as it comes right through there
01:11:15with a good bursting run.
01:11:17But look when you get closer to the line
01:11:19when Fafita has the ball.
01:11:21And in the tackle,
01:11:22it looked as if he'd actually dived
01:11:24and doubled movement over.
01:11:25But it looks like the try was actually scored there.
01:11:28And I think it was quite confusing
01:11:30in actual fact from the front-on situation.
01:11:32But a great try.
01:11:38So the kick has missed.
01:11:41And that's again a disappointment
01:11:43to see the kicking so poor.
01:11:45But nevertheless, it's the try scored by Tonga.
01:11:49They're on the board in Rugby World Cup.
01:11:5120 points to four, Canada in the lead.
01:11:54So remember the speech by de Goody
01:11:56at halftime.
01:11:58He'll be repeating it.
01:12:00This is the man who also came on as a replacement,
01:12:03Taha Afe.
01:12:04Now let's see if the Tongans can become
01:12:07more urgent in their play.
01:12:08Here he comes again.
01:12:10He's got the ball.
01:12:11He's got the ball.
01:12:12He's got the ball.
01:12:13He's got the ball.
01:12:14He's got the ball.
01:12:15He's got the ball.
01:12:16He's got the ball.
01:12:17He's got the ball.
01:12:18He's got the ball.
01:12:19He's got the ball.
01:12:20He's got the ball.
01:12:21He's got the ball.
01:12:22Here he comes again.
01:12:23Taha Afe.
01:12:25Talai Fafito.
01:12:26Good pass.
01:12:27Far away.
01:12:28Kicking the high hole.
01:12:33What a shame his pass to Katusi Fialea
01:12:35wasn't so good.
01:12:37But the Tongans seem to be greatly encouraged
01:12:39by the fact that they've scored some points.
01:12:41And this is certainly going to be
01:12:43livening the game up now.
01:12:44Because Tonga are really starting to get the ball
01:12:46and run at them.
01:12:47But, you know, just that final pass,
01:12:49you know, that was a six-pointer goal.
01:12:53So we go back to the scrums.
01:12:55And Suakimatua Puaka on the other side
01:12:57is not at all happy in the scrums.
01:12:59It's been a nightmare for him.
01:13:01Steward away to Reece.
01:13:16So the crowd at the Plain Park
01:13:18really enjoy the fact that Tonga
01:13:21got into the game with a try.
01:13:23And they seem to be going a little better.
01:13:25Encouraged by the fact that they've scored points.
01:13:28This is Sione Taha Afe.
01:13:31John he's called.
01:13:33And he's played in a lot of rugby around the world
01:13:36in Australia and in France.
01:13:40Te Ute Fafito.
01:13:43Now he's an excellent little player.
01:13:45Talai Fafito the halfback.
01:13:47He's been to New Zealand before.
01:13:50Talai Fafito.
01:13:52Oh, he's kicked that one too far.
01:13:54Let's see what happens to the bounce.
01:13:56It's a big in goal area.
01:13:58And it wasn't too bad after all.
01:14:00It bounced up and over the goal.
01:14:20Kicked it down to Waipulu.
01:14:23Good pass away to Potu.
01:14:26Seems to be going pretty well.
01:14:28Got over his injury.
01:14:30That's a fullback Etiaki in there.
01:14:49Eleven minutes gone. Second half.
01:14:51Canada 20.
01:14:53And their first ever appearance in New Zealand.
01:14:55Tonga 4.
01:14:59Not much there for Leovard to do.
01:15:01That's halfway to the left.
01:15:03Fafito.
01:15:05Fuka.
01:15:08And things are looking good.
01:15:10They've got the ball.
01:15:12They've got the ball.
01:15:14They've got the ball.
01:15:16They've got the ball.
01:15:18And things are going a lot better for Tonga
01:15:20in the last five minutes.
01:15:22Well, yeah, they've certainly lifted their game now.
01:15:24And you can see the enthusiasm starting to bubble back into them.
01:15:27But Canada 2.
01:15:29Just going a little bit off the boil.
01:15:31Getting up to 20 points at that stage.
01:15:33They started to relax just a little too much.
01:15:40Mark Cardinalihuka.
01:15:4286.
01:15:4431.
01:15:48Time.
01:15:50For the Tongans.
01:15:52A few kilometres to go.
01:15:54Oh, Talai Fafito lost that one forward.
01:15:58That's amazing transformation that's come over the Tongan team
01:16:00since they scored that try by their captain, number 7.
01:16:03Yes, and Canada are just getting a little bit ragged too.
01:16:06They're trying to speed the game up.
01:16:08And really, Canada really want to try and slow it down a bit
01:16:11just to take the edge off the Tongans again.
01:16:13Get it up.
01:16:15Get it up.
01:16:18Get it up.
01:16:20And watch the pull in.
01:16:22I don't want to see any jerking at all.
01:16:35Well, with all the talk about the scrums that are collapsing
01:16:37in rugby at the moment, it's good to see Clive Norling
01:16:41insisting on the scrum staying up.
01:16:44That's the score after nearly 15 minutes of the second half.
01:16:4916 point lead to Canada.
01:16:56Gareth Rees.
01:16:58Canadian most articulate young man.
01:17:00Spent his last year at school two years ago
01:17:03at Harrow School in London.
01:17:06And so he's a very well presented young man.
01:17:10He actually played rugby in London for Wasps Club
01:17:14while he was there.
01:17:15But his return to be of great value to Canada
01:17:17since making his debut last year, just 19 years of age.
01:17:20Gareth Rees.
01:17:25But my word, the Tongans have come back
01:17:27after scoring that try by their captain, Baka Hobalu.
01:17:32And there is the encouragement going in from the team.
01:17:34Very, very quietly spoken team.
01:17:37Very modest and unassuming players.
01:17:41Very popular visitors here to Napier.
01:17:47Short throw in.
01:17:49Foto going in.
01:17:50But Ennis has it, number 21.
01:17:56Stuart Rees.
01:18:08Rory Radu, the flanker, coming outside Rees.
01:18:11And they're dropping off to a shortened line-out.
01:18:13The Tongans are going for a shortened line-out
01:18:15to try and get some ball.
01:18:21Ian Stewart.
01:18:23Rees off the left boot that time.
01:18:25He's pretty good off both.
01:18:28And the ball is out there.
01:18:31Well, Canada's really playing 10-man rugby here at the moment.
01:18:35And I think, really, it's in their interest
01:18:37to just slow the game down, play the sidelines.
01:18:40And the Tongans are really looking to get into it again.
01:18:44Talai Fafita.
01:18:46Liao Ba.
01:18:47Baka Hobalu.
01:18:49That's Te Uta, the other flanker.
01:18:51Oh, they've lost this one.
01:18:52But a penalty midfield.
01:18:55That's the first penalty in the second half.
01:18:57And Balu.
01:19:01But they might have just touched that one forward.
01:19:03Yep.
01:19:05Once again, I think the Tonga not really having a shot at goal there
01:19:09would have been quite important for three points.
01:19:11But lack of confidence, probably, in the ball.
01:19:17And the Tongans are going for a shortened line-out.
01:19:19And they're dropping off to a shortened line-out.
01:19:21Oh.
01:19:26Ennis to Stewart.
01:19:27This is Ian Stewart.
01:19:29Tommy Woods.
01:19:30Glenn Ennis.
01:19:31Good tackle by Kinifotu.
01:19:35There it is again for Stewart.
01:19:36Away to Reece.
01:19:37McTavish.
01:19:38Vizon.
01:19:39Wired up but left out.
01:19:41Pat Palmer, the speedster.
01:19:44Good tackle on him by Sami Nohu.
01:19:46Intercept by Liao Ba.
01:19:51The speedster.
01:19:52Still going.
01:19:53Look at the Tongans.
01:19:55Ta'aafe.
01:19:56It's just outside the 22.
01:19:58Tindika Haiho.
01:20:00Oh, there was offside play for sure.
01:20:02The referee's seen it too.
01:20:03Nope.
01:20:05One of those Canadians looked to me to be up offside.
01:20:08We seem to be right in amongst the back line.
01:20:10But when the Tongans get going, the crowd really buzzes.
01:20:17Injured player.
01:20:22Well, a more satisfied Tongan coach looking at his watch.
01:20:34This is the end on replay.
01:20:41Here they come out on their backs again.
01:20:43This is where the Tongans secured the ball.
01:20:45Wired came in but was left out.
01:20:48Pat Palmer.
01:20:49Good tackle here by Sami Mohi.
01:20:51But then the intercept by Liao Ba.
01:20:53And away he went.
01:20:55And then looking at it from the other end as the player to Uta.
01:21:04And he's got it.
01:21:05He's got it.
01:21:06He's got it.
01:21:07He's got it.
01:21:08He's got it.
01:21:09He's got it.
01:21:10He's got it.
01:21:11He's got it.
01:21:12He's got it.
01:21:15There's some of the Canadian team.
01:21:16That's the man to the right.
01:21:18Actually, it's Roe Heinsohn, who's another real veteran.
01:21:21And he played the lock for Canada against the All Blacks in 1980.
01:21:26But he's not in the playing 15 today.
01:21:29The man to the left is the assistant coach.
01:21:36Ian Stewart.
01:21:38Wyatt.
01:21:39Yes, it's ten man rugby.
01:21:41Eight men.
01:21:42A half back and a kicker.
01:21:44Going back to that previous movement, though,
01:21:46when Liao Ba came in with that intercept,
01:21:48I was trying hard to work out how the heck he got across there.
01:21:51Because he really covered well and came right into the gap
01:21:54and was starting to work a bit harder.
01:21:5818 minutes gone in the second half.
01:22:00That one was not straight, but it was the Tonga throw.
01:22:03So referee Norling will let it go under the heading of advantage.
01:22:08Roy Radu, number 7, and Glenn Ennis, number 21.
01:22:13Stewart.
01:22:14Another kick this time from Reece.
01:22:19Lemeke Baipula.
01:22:25And that one is in the hands now of Mark Wyatt.
01:22:30Out towards the centre.
01:22:33Talai Kofita.
01:22:35Itiaki.
01:22:36And that's the first time again, Liao Ba.
01:22:40Reece is back.
01:22:44Gareth Reece.
01:22:49And that's out on the full, but it'll be more or less a line-out
01:22:52where he kicked it.
01:22:55Well, now with probably about 20 minutes to go,
01:22:58the Tongans are really starting to lighten it up a bit.
01:23:01And if they can get just free a little bit more ball,
01:23:04they could finish off very strongly.
01:23:08Not straight.
01:23:12Well, once again, you know, Tonga really, if they can get it going,
01:23:16it can be, in the first few games, it was so exciting,
01:23:19and we had these great finishes.
01:23:20But, you know, Tongans and the Island football is really good.
01:23:29Ball held in the back by Ennis.
01:23:31Look for number nine, Olo.
01:23:38Well, those forwards are sort of hanging around their little gang.
01:23:41Graeme, what's that all about?
01:23:42Well, I think, you know, they came off the scrum and just stood there,
01:23:45and as the Canadians were pushing and pushing and pushing,
01:23:47I think I would have left the advantage
01:23:50because the Canadians still had the ball under control.
01:23:53And I think the penalty could have only have come
01:23:55from the Tongan players actually standing around offside.
01:24:02So it's going to be a shot at goal.
01:24:06Mark Wyatt to make the kick.
01:24:12Wyatt, of course, the Canadian full-back.
01:24:14There is a full-back for the Welsh team this year,
01:24:17but not at the World Cup with the same name, Mark Wyatt.
01:24:20He was in the Welsh playing 15
01:24:22but didn't make the World Cup squad to New Zealand.
01:24:25So Mark Wyatt from Canada.
01:24:35This is Puka.
01:24:38Caught by his opposite number.
01:24:40What a good tackle it was,
01:24:41although the referee says it was a dangerous tackle by Spike McTavish.
01:24:50Leovar, a couple of good sidesteps,
01:24:52Leovar, a couple of good sidesteps,
01:24:54and he's through.
01:24:55Halfway.
01:24:56Valu.
01:25:05OK.
01:25:06There they go again in the backs to Uta.
01:25:08The full-back is up.
01:25:09Etiaki.
01:25:16Well, the Tongans just can't quite pull it off,
01:25:18but they're trying very hard to make the break
01:25:21and get out wide and run around and all through these Canadians.
01:25:2520 points to 4.
01:25:26Tonga are in the game at the moment.
01:25:41Talai, Kapita, the half-back.
01:25:43This one was turned right around.
01:25:47There it is for the Tongans.
01:25:48There it is for the Tongans,
01:25:49so they're going to get it any way they can.
01:25:52Oh, he's through again.
01:25:54Puka.
01:25:57Vaipulu.
01:25:58Kicked away by Wyatt.
01:26:05Villa-Lea.
01:26:10And maybe it was...
01:26:14I don't understand that,
01:26:15but it was a dangerous tackle, Graham Williams?
01:26:17Again, it was the Tongan player went to the ground,
01:26:20dived on the ball,
01:26:21and a Canadian player just dived on the top of him,
01:26:24and the penalty came very, very quickly.
01:26:26Just very hard to see why.
01:26:30Alamuni-Lewa.
01:26:32Kicks.
01:26:33He hasn't found the line.
01:26:35Woods into Wyatt.
01:26:41It's a good kick by Wyatt.
01:26:42Touch-judge signalling there.
01:26:44Ball out to the right of halfway.
01:26:48Touch-judge.
01:26:49You see there's Bob Fordham,
01:26:50the man that refereed the match between New Zealand and Italy.
01:27:01Vanden Brink, the lock forward, number four.
01:27:08So a few penalties going Tonga's way.
01:27:10The whole tide of the game is just running for them nicely at the moment.
01:27:13A quick tap.
01:27:14I don't think the Canadians were backed in.
01:27:16Referee Norling is allowing play to come on.
01:27:18Carry on.
01:27:19No, he has signalled them, I think, for 10, not back 10 metres.
01:27:23So, here's the Tongans again, running it at the team from Canada.
01:27:27Full-back Etiaki is up.
01:27:31This is Cardinal, away to Vizen.
01:27:34Palmer.
01:27:42After those two quick penalties by Tonga,
01:27:44I think probably they're trying to rush it just a little bit now.
01:27:47They're making the breaks,
01:27:48but the support play is not quite getting there with them.
01:27:51So, you know, they just want to be a little bit better organised.
01:28:01Rob Fram getting some rough treatment in there,
01:28:03some tough treatment.
01:28:07Look how physical it is.
01:28:09Up.
01:28:10Up.
01:28:12Up.
01:28:23Up.
01:28:32They're gone, mate.
01:28:33They're gone.
01:28:35You can hear that from...
01:28:36I think it's...
01:28:37They're gone, they're gone, he says.
01:28:39And...
01:28:41Indeed they are.
01:28:42There they go back.
01:28:43Another penalty for Canada.
01:28:45There's some big men in that pack.
01:28:46You see Bill Hanson there, the man who's the Toronto firefighter.
01:28:50The only non-British Columbian man on the team.
01:28:59So, can the Tongan team get it together?
01:29:11There you go.
01:29:16Right.
01:29:17The Tongans have got it again.
01:29:18Liveau's had a good game.
01:29:21Sami Mohi.
01:29:22But they just can't quite get it going.
01:29:23That's Fram who's got a try in the first half.
01:29:27Come on, come on.
01:29:40WHISTLE BLOWS
01:29:42APPLAUSE
01:29:57Canada 20, Tonga 4.
01:29:59Reminding you that after this game is over,
01:30:01we'll have live coverage from Hamilton, Argentina against Fiji.
01:30:07Then USA against Japan from Brisbane.
01:30:14Stewart.
01:30:15Maurice, he's kicked all day.
01:30:17The 19-year-old.
01:30:19Vaipula, good catch.
01:30:21And he's claimed the fair catch.
01:30:23It was interesting then that Bison actually waited for him to catch it.
01:30:29To Uta.
01:30:30Good tackle by Reece.
01:30:32Vaipula.
01:30:34Talai for Fita.
01:30:35They're through again.
01:30:36The half-back, Leobar.
01:30:39Fiolea.
01:30:41Number 8, Fotu.
01:30:46Afre, number 21, doing good work in there.
01:30:48Talai for Fita.
01:30:49Leobar.
01:30:50Fuka.
01:30:55Now the Canadians have got it.
01:30:56Spence McTavish, I think he was a bit surprised.
01:30:58Paul Bison.
01:31:00Oh, that looked like it might have been a bit forward.
01:31:02Let's see here what happens.
01:31:03Wired up from full-back.
01:31:05And he's driven the Tongans back.
01:31:08APPLAUSE
01:31:09Brave stuff by the Tongans,
01:31:10but they're driven back by number 15, Mark Bison.
01:31:13Referee, Clive Norling,
01:31:14going to trot right across to the far side
01:31:17where there's an injury up near halfway.
01:31:23And once again, it's the number 8 forward,
01:31:26Hikini Fotu.
01:31:34And once again,
01:31:35it's the number 8 forward,
01:31:37Hikini Fotu.
01:31:44Jumpers, just pull up to the ball.
01:31:46The rest of you are looking for the holes,
01:31:48looking for tap downs,
01:31:49looking for the back.
01:31:50Remember from the back,
01:31:51I'm just flying out at the fly half,
01:31:53I'm not considering a strum now.
01:31:55So somebody cover it up.
01:31:57Come on.
01:32:01OK, first...
01:32:05Why don't you do it more?
01:32:07It'll be the 40th ball in a row,
01:32:08but we win the first one.
01:32:10You don't have to call anything.
01:32:11Thank you.
01:32:18So the Canadian forward pack coming back
01:32:20for the line outs.
01:32:21It'll be Tongan ball.
01:32:22Hikini Fotu is coming back into the game.
01:32:25And my word, it's been a brave second half performance
01:32:27by Tongan.
01:32:31Without much sophistication in their play,
01:32:34they've tried very, very hard.
01:32:35Lots of stout heart in that Tongan team.
01:32:42OK, the ball is out on the backs.
01:32:44McTavish.
01:32:48Caught by Barlow.
01:32:51Hear them calling for Herschel.
01:32:52That's Ian Stewart, nicknamed Herschel.
01:32:54He's got it.
01:32:55Away to Rhys.
01:32:57Again, he's kicked.
01:32:58He's kicked 90% of the balls he's had all day.
01:33:01Etiaki.
01:33:02Oh, Vizon went in very hard on him.
01:33:04And that was uncalled for.
01:33:06Well, I think that was...
01:33:07The man, Vizon, went in very hard on him.
01:33:10Vizon went in very strongly with his forearm.
01:33:13And the Tongans retaliated and got penalised.
01:33:16But I think the first one really should have been
01:33:18against this man here, Paul Vizon.
01:33:21Well, it'll be very interesting to see it on the replay
01:33:23because he was really coming through on this occasion.
01:33:26And he was really flying.
01:33:29There goes the take.
01:33:31It was probably looking just a little bit high there,
01:33:34but he really swamped him.
01:33:35But there goes the punch.
01:33:37And there's a try in the corner for Pat Palmer.
01:33:42Quickly taken kick.
01:33:44And they flew in at the corner.
01:33:46And the try is scored by the winger, Pat Palmer.
01:33:49So let's look at that again from the quickly taken penalty
01:34:08from midfield.
01:34:09Stewart to Palmer.
01:34:11And Palmer across in the corner flag.
01:34:20He's the fastest man in the Canadian team and
01:34:23they reacted well to get the ball out to him
01:34:25for the second try of this half.
01:34:27Pat Palmer.
01:34:36Change of goal kicker. It's Gareth Rees.
01:34:41And it's at the post.
01:34:42Twenty-four points to four.
01:34:49So Alemony Lievard kicks out.
01:35:12The try by Palmer was unconverted.
01:35:15Twenty-four points to four.
01:35:18Now here's Herschel on the run.
01:35:31The Tongans being emotional kind of players.
01:35:34They might be stung and demoralized by the Canadians
01:35:38scoring there after they'd had such a good period in the game.
01:35:43It's a very high ball for Feolea.
01:35:49That's Mohi number 13.
01:35:55Stewart.
01:36:02Kutusi Feolea knocked on.
01:36:04That's him on the left wing.
01:36:06Kutusi Feolea.
01:36:08I think probably over the last few five or six minutes
01:36:11you've seen the Canadian put tight forward pegs
01:36:14and getting quite slow.
01:36:15But they're still putting a lot of weight into those scrums
01:36:18and working hard.
01:36:24Let's see what the Canadians do now.
01:36:26They might try to tap again.
01:36:29No, that's the fly half.
01:36:33Fly half and called in to take the shot.
01:36:39So it's going to be a shot at goal for Gareth Rees.
01:36:44There's Hawke's Bay, the lovely sea view in the background
01:36:48on the Marine Parade there and Hawke's Bay living up to its reputation
01:36:52producing a lovely sunny afternoon for this Rugby World Cup match.
01:36:55The only match that will be played in Napier
01:36:59and that's been a pretty good presentation as well.
01:37:04So 19-year-old Gareth Rees's second shot at goal.
01:37:12And that one is through for three more for Canada.
01:37:1727 points to four they lead.
01:37:24For Canada, penalty goal for number 10, Gareth Rees
01:37:28bringing the scoreline to 27-4.
01:37:33Well, we get from the kick-off here now the Tongans really need
01:37:58to get something back into the game now
01:38:00because it's just getting really too late for them
01:38:02and Stuy Stewart running now with the ball has had an excellent game.
01:38:06That's Rob Frayne, another of the tri-scorers.
01:38:10Roy Redoux, the man who went to school at Targo Boys High School
01:38:13playing for Canada.
01:38:17Glenn Ennis taking it in.
01:38:18You can see it's a pretty well one-way traffic at the moment
01:38:21and celebrate because Rees has let it out, out to the full-back wide.
01:38:25He's got to Woods with him, Tommy Woods, Spence McTavish,
01:38:30Glenn Ennis, hands to Goody and Eddie Evans has got the ball
01:38:35but he lost it on the line.
01:38:40Eddie Evans, he can't believe it.
01:38:47Good play by Canada.
01:38:49You can see the Tongans are wandering a bit without much purpose in midfield.
01:38:53Now let's see what the Canadians can run back with them.
01:38:57Good kick by Wyatt.
01:39:00This is to Uta.
01:39:02This is Tali Etiaki.
01:39:20So Cardinal to throw.
01:39:27There's the signal from Ennis to his jumper.
01:39:32It's actually going to go to the half-back, number 9, Ian Stewart.
01:39:39Now out to the Canadian backs again.
01:39:41This time a little one by Rees.
01:39:43McTavish trying to run under the bounce, he's done it.
01:39:45Rees, Parma.
01:39:49Try number 2 for Pat Parma.
01:39:56Good play, variation this time by Gareth Rees, just a little pop kick
01:40:05and it bounced kindly for number 12, Spence McTavish
01:40:08and he cleared it very quick, quick hands and then quick hands again by Rees
01:40:12and the flying Parma, the quickest man in the Canadian team is in again in the corner.
01:40:18I think that the beauty of some of the tries we've seen through this World Cup
01:40:21has been the excellent movement of the ball
01:40:23and with McTavish coming through here, taking the ball
01:40:26and then a quick pass over and it was held by Rees
01:40:29and then away goes Parma
01:40:31and I think the tries that have come with just that quick movement of the ball
01:40:36and another great try to Canada.
01:40:43Conversion attempt by Rees has missed.
01:40:47It's 31 points to 4 and Tonga played right out of the game now.
01:40:54Woohoo!
01:41:02The totally demoralised Tongan side must be feeling that way now
01:41:06because I think their last game that they played against the Canadians
01:41:09the goal was round the other way
01:41:11and the Tongans must be knowing what they've done wrong.
01:41:15They certainly tried very hard in the middle of the game
01:41:19Oh, that was Hennessy, just really rolled it back to the Tongans.
01:41:23That was the lock forward.
01:41:27Tongans have got it.
01:41:28Talai for Fita.
01:41:29To Uta.
01:41:32Fialea.
01:41:35And that's out.
01:41:36Midway.
01:41:37Goal line and 22 for Tusi Fialea, the left winger.
01:41:50Tapped down by Fine.
01:41:53Leova, Moe number 13.
01:42:08Five minutes to go till the end of the game.
01:42:13Reminding you that we'll have Argentina against Fiji from Hamilton after this
01:42:17and then USA against Japan from Brisbane.
01:42:26Canada have scored three tries in each half.
01:42:31It's been a lot of kicking from Wyatt and Rees.
01:42:36But it's been a winning pattern.
01:42:39We certainly can thump the ball this man Mark Wyatt.
01:42:48So Canada will take two points in the group play on this match.
01:42:53And they'll find it harder against Ireland and Wales.
01:42:59That's good hands by Fuka Kirikohaiho and the winger, the fullback up.
01:43:03Itaaki, this is Leova, who's been about the best along with Fita of the Tongan team.
01:43:09That's Fuka again.
01:43:13But they've lost it to Mark Kyle.
01:43:15But they've lost it to Mark Cardinal and it's gone back through the Canadian team.
01:43:25Word about the referee, Graham Williams, I think his gestures are flamboyant.
01:43:28This is a big blast on the whistle but he's done a pretty good job, hasn't he?
01:43:31Yes, I think he's been excellent because there hasn't really been anything contentious out there for him to handle today.
01:43:36But he's let the game flow as much as he possibly could and I think he's done a pretty good job.
01:43:41Penalty try, of course, awarded in the first half.
01:43:43Just about an exact replay of the one that cost Italy six points at Eden Park.
01:43:49Good catch by Wyatt.
01:43:52Gets away from Villar.
01:43:55That's Mui and that's Pat Farmer.
01:44:01Well, the player's pretty tired and some of the forwards come across.
01:44:11Tong and team have got some fairly crunchy characters in their pack.
01:44:16And they seem to be struggling a bit.
01:44:21That's Ennis.
01:44:22Cardinal.
01:44:24Rhys.
01:44:25He's got speed and he can run.
01:44:28Vaison.
01:44:29And here comes try number seven for Canada.
01:44:35Second try for Paul Vaison.
01:44:42This one came really because the Tongans are pretty well tuckered right out here.
01:44:47Their tackling is only half-hearted.
01:44:49Ennis has a look here to see where to pass to.
01:44:51Gets it away.
01:44:52Cardinal shifts it to the back and Rhys at last has a go.
01:44:55And he's got good speed for such a big man.
01:44:5715 stone and he swung his pass into the clear to allow Paul Vaison to run in under the posts.
01:45:04Well, this is just a, you know, a great piece of play from Canada.
01:45:10It swept from 75 metres and it was good backing up.
01:45:14And when Rhys actually turned on the gas, the support started to come from wide out.
01:45:18And Vaison with a big gap, all he had to do was head for the posts.
01:45:22But the Tongans really, I think, looking at the scoreboard and thinking,
01:45:26gosh, we're so far down, they're pretty tired out there.
01:45:29And really it was just that one big dummy by Stuart that just opened the gap.
01:45:43So the left boot of Leovar will restart.
01:45:54The try converted from under the post.
01:45:5637 points to four.
01:45:58Taken in by Hans de Goody who has led the team very well indeed.
01:46:04Ian Stewart.
01:46:05That's a flanker.
01:46:07Ennis, a loose man.
01:46:12And that's Bill Hanson.
01:46:15But the ball has been lost forward.
01:46:27Gini Fortu, the number eight.
01:46:31Cardinal.
01:46:32Rhys.
01:46:33Radu.
01:46:37Talai Fafita.
01:46:42No one there to play hard back.
01:46:44So in comes the wing at Fiolet.
01:46:48To Goody, number five.
01:46:51Eddie Evans.
01:46:53Rhys.
01:46:56And that's out on the floor.
01:47:02Well, it wasn't a good play.
01:47:04It was a good play.
01:47:06But it was a good play.
01:47:08It was a good play.
01:47:10And it was a good play.
01:47:13Well, I wonder what Rhys was thinking then.
01:47:17You know, when you're on attack and just thinking, you know,
01:47:20if I kick for touch, he'll run one down there.
01:47:23Because I'm sure that they don't want to do too much running now.
01:47:26They know that the game is very, very safe for them.
01:47:29But the Tongans really must be thinking, you know,
01:47:32where have we gone wrong today?
01:47:34With another injury out there on the paddock.
01:47:36The captain sitting there.
01:47:38I just wonder what is going through his mind.
01:47:40Because he's made a very, very good effort today.
01:47:42But their forwards just really haven't been able to cope
01:47:45with the Canadian side.
01:47:47And the Canadian side have grown in confidence, I think,
01:47:50in the second half.
01:47:52And being able to run in two or three really good tries.
01:47:55But it's been good support play.
01:47:57And the Tongans have just struggled at times
01:47:59to get the game together.
01:48:01So they're not happy.
01:48:03That's Gary Johnson to the left there.
01:48:05The Canadian coach with his assistant.
01:48:07The man in the front is John Robertson
01:48:09who was chosen to play on the match but couldn't.
01:48:14So Fafita.
01:48:16Good ball to find Leovar.
01:48:19They've been the best part of the Tongan team.
01:48:22The combination between Telo Fafita and Leovar.
01:48:33Mark Wyatt.
01:48:36And he's kicked the ball out of the pool.
01:48:38The match is over.
01:48:40Canada delighted.
01:48:42Their first ever appearance on the rugby field in New Zealand.
01:48:46And they're very emotional about it.
01:48:4937 points to 4.
01:48:51There's their captain in the background,
01:48:53hands to Goody, thanking his own team.
01:48:55They've played very well.
01:48:57And as Graham Williams said, they've gained in confidence.
01:49:00And Team Canada has beaten Tonga by 37 points to 4.
01:49:05Here they go into the huddle,
01:49:07which is so typical of sport in North America.
01:49:11And they are very pleased.
01:49:1315 young men from Canada.
01:49:15There's Gareth Rees who played such a big hand
01:49:18that it took over the goal kicking in the end.
01:49:20And the kids are heading for him.
01:49:22He's played a leading role in the win today.
01:49:25Canada 37, Tonga 4.
01:49:27A word about the Tongans.
01:49:29They certainly contributed in the second half
01:49:31to the best part of the match.
01:49:33There's their captain, Faka Hauvalu, the veteran.
01:49:36And when their major effort didn't succeed,
01:49:39they rather petered out a bit.
01:49:41But they certainly played with commendable spirit right throughout.
01:49:44There is hands to Goody, the victorious captain,
01:49:46coming off the field.
01:49:48And with him, the remaining Canadian players
01:49:51having beaten Tonga by 37 to 4.
01:49:54Final comments by Graham Williams, former All Black.
01:49:57Well, it's certainly a good game for Canada.
01:49:59But I feel a little bit sorry for Tonga.
01:50:01I thought they would have performed better.
01:50:03I think they're going to have to look very, very hard
01:50:05into what their next games are going to be
01:50:07and what they're going to do.
01:50:08But Canada must be very, very happy with a good win.
01:50:12Well, that's what it's all about.
01:50:14Players honouring each other in the end
01:50:17after a hard-fought struggle
01:50:19which saw the Tongans put in 15 to 20 minutes
01:50:24of excellent pressure on the Canadians,
01:50:26which the Canadians withstood
01:50:28and went on to add late tries to Palmer and Vizon
01:50:33and eventually hands to Goody
01:50:35and the Canada team were winners by 37 points to 4.
