01:37The Tacoma.
01:38Endearing enough to get its own two-syllable bite-sized nickname.
01:43Coma?
01:44No, taco.
01:46Anyway, it's been a sales leader of the mid-size truck game for decades,
01:50and now, in its fourth generation, it's all new.
01:54No more V6.
01:56Instead, two very potent 2.4-liter four-cylinder turbocharged options,
02:01and a manual transmission is still available.
02:06There's a new interior and even more trims to choose from.
02:10Like, there's tons.
02:12Ranging from the cheapest SR trim at $34,700 U.S.,
02:16and going up over $50,000 U.S. in the top trims before adding any options.
02:21And yes, it's got some pretty heavy competition.
02:24Namely, because it seems like all the manufacturers are putting more into this class of truck than ever before.
02:30And in our minds, that actually makes a lot of sense.
02:34Because if you think about it, the traditional class of half-ton or full-size trucks over the years
02:39has been getting bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger.
02:47Which is interesting, because this, which is a mid-size truck,
02:52is about the same size and dimensions as a full-size truck was when we were kids.
02:58Speak for yourself.
02:59What do you mean?
03:00As you know, I grew up on the mean streets of London.
03:02Yeah.
03:03And full-size trucks are to London as Godzilla was to Tokyo.
03:07Oh.
03:08We would be running the other way.
03:10Oh, okay.
03:11Well, anyway, what I was saying was that this has a similar wheelbase to full-size trucks from 20 years ago.
03:17It actually has similar numbers like payload and towing capacity as those trucks.
03:20It actually has more power than the V8 Tundra from 2006.
03:25Right.
03:26So why are we driving around like idiots in full-size trucks?
03:31We're not.
03:32You drive an F-150.
03:34I know, I'm an idiot.
03:35That's what I said.
03:36What's happened here?
03:37Huh?
03:38What's that?
03:39Nothing. Shut up. Get in the car.
03:48Okay, so do you know what I mean, though?
03:50Because this isn't actually a small truck.
03:52No, it doesn't feel small either.
03:54It's high to get in.
03:55Yep.
03:56And then looking over the hood, it feels a bit bus-like.
03:59Yeah, but at the same time, this is a comfortable size for a pickup truck to just drive around.
04:05These are canyon roads.
04:06Yeah.
04:07I can tell you for a fact in my F-150, I would not be comfortable and I would be going very slowly.
04:12Well, this isn't slow.
04:14No.
04:15This has 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque.
04:19It's not insignificant, is it?
04:23And that's not even the most aggressive engine option for this car.
04:26No.
04:27Because if you go for the more aggressive trims, which we're testing hopefully in April…
04:31Yep.
04:32…you get the i-Force Max.
04:35And not only does it have a list of advantages that come with it…
04:40Yeah, see, that's quick.
04:47And that has 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.
04:52Those are actually very significant numbers.
04:54Very significant.
04:55But, I mean, for everyday driving, this…
05:01It's honestly not slow.
05:05Yeah, I can't imagine this feels like a downgrade at all from the V6.
05:09No, no, no, no, it doesn't.
05:10I mean, there is a little bit of turbo lag, obviously.
05:12But with that turbo also comes some insane turbo sounds.
05:17Here's a few seconds of what you'd hear if you stuck your head in the engine bay.
05:25So shocking that we asked you all on Instagram to guess what was making those sounds before this video came out.
05:30And some of the suggestions were wild, including things like a Pagani Huayra or a Chiron.
05:36Nope.
05:37Base four-cylinder Tacoma.
05:39What a world.
05:41And this has got a new eight-speed transmission.
05:43Because the old one was like a pre-production one.
05:46So, it's got a little bit of everything.
05:48It's got a little bit of everything.
05:49It's got a little bit of everything.
05:50It's got a little bit of everything.
05:51And this has got a new eight-speed transmission.
05:53Because the old one was like a pretty ancient six-speed.
05:56Right, right.
05:57So, this is actually geared very nicely for around town.
06:01On the highway, you put your foot down, it's not going to throw you back in your seat.
06:05But if you're exiting a mall parking lot...
06:10Which we have done.
06:11We did that.
06:12We've been living with this.
06:13We didn't go on the traditional launch.
06:14No.
06:15And it has been surprisingly easy to live with.
06:19It's easy to steer, it's easy to park, it's easy to drive.
06:22It's easy.
06:23And that's the point that I'm making.
06:24Is that if you get a car like this, which can tow...
06:27How many thousand pounds?
06:28You mean truck.
06:29Sorry.
06:30Careful.
06:31How many thousand pounds?
06:32It's up to 6,500 if you get the trims that offer that.
06:36So, with that amount of towing capacity,
06:38that's what trucks used to be able to do in the class above.
06:42That's what this is now.
06:43But counterpoint...
06:44Why are we all driving around in the ridiculous thing?
06:46Because we've upgraded.
06:47What if you want something that tows 12,000 pounds?
06:49Who's towing 12,000 pounds?
06:51You have an F-150.
06:52I do.
06:53I have an F-150.
06:54And I tow a trailer that probably is about 10,000 pounds,
06:56so I actually need it.
06:57But most people tow RVs and they tow boats and stuff.
07:02Those don't weigh more than 5,000 pounds for the most part.
07:05No matter what we do, we've tried and failed multiple times
07:08to try and convince people to not drive pickup trucks every day.
07:11Because you bought one, though.
07:12I know.
07:13I'm stupid.
07:14We've been over this.
07:15Because it doesn't make any sense for many reasons.
07:18One being rear-wheel drive.
07:21Yeah.
07:22Rear-wheel drive.
07:23Obviously, there is a four-high option.
07:26There's transfer cases available in these.
07:28And there is going to be an automatic continuous four-wheel drive
07:34like my F-150 has.
07:35Right.
07:36But this trim we're in is the TRD Sport.
07:37Yes.
07:38So its thing is it has TRD-tuned dampers.
07:42There's like five different types of dampers you can get in this car.
07:45There's some of the great names.
07:46You've got Fox.
07:48You've got Old Man Emu, which I know is a legacy damper,
07:52but it's still hilarious.
07:53Yeah.
07:54But the result of the TRD Sport dampers is that it is surprisingly controlled.
07:59There's still body-on-frame motions and vibrations.
08:04Yes.
08:05They're not jarring, but there's just that extra little bit of bobble
08:10It's okay, though.
08:11I mean, as a guy who apparently idiotically owns an F-150,
08:15according to my own theory, this is a lot nicer ride than an F-150.
08:20The F-150 jiggles and it bangs and it feels big and stupid.
08:23Well, we also got coil springs on this one.
08:25That's a big thing.
08:26Yes.
08:27You can get leaf springs.
08:28On the base space.
08:29On the base space.
08:30Yeah, they want to make a Tacoma for everyone, and there are a billion trims.
08:33Well, they are planning on selling this thing in huge numbers.
08:38Huge numbers across the world.
08:40And it's become an icon.
08:41It has become an icon.
08:42Before we discuss how it looks, why don't I just quickly drive?
08:45Yeah, no, I don't think that's a good idea.
08:48No?
08:49No, no, because of the event.
08:52There was no event.
08:53There was an event.
08:58You said you weren't going to say anything.
09:00And I still won't.
09:02So, last night I was driving with Billy, and it was dark and raining in L.A.,
09:10and Billy decided that it was a good idea to turn the traction control off
09:15in a truck with no weight in the back.
09:18It's rear-wheel drive.
09:20And we did a couple of 360s on a six-lane semi-highway.
09:24It wasn't 360s.
09:27I spoke to Billy.
09:28Okay.
09:29It was a lot of things, and he said it was very scary.
09:34But he said it was all in the name of experimenting and science.
09:37So, technically, he's a thought leader.
09:41Right.
09:42Anyway, let's talk about the Tacoma and the way that it looks,
09:45because it looks like a Tacoma.
09:47Yeah, considering this is a ground-up new vehicle.
09:51Genuinely ground-up.
09:52I poked them on that one.
09:53You did, you did.
09:54And I said, because we've heard ground-up a lot lately,
09:56and it's literally not ground-up.
09:58It's adopted the modern Toyota design language.
10:00It definitely looks a little bit more baby Tundra.
10:02Yeah.
10:03It still has a non-functional hood scoop from the previous generation.
10:07It's got fake vents here.
10:09Yep.
10:10Real air curtain things for the wheels.
10:14Speaking of curtains.
10:16Yeah, that's to help fuel.
10:17That's for mileage and fuel economy.
10:19It doesn't look good.
10:20No, you can just take it off.
10:21You can take it off.
10:22I feel like a lot of people will.
10:23And I believe there's some that don't come with it,
10:25because there's going to be skid plates and accessories and stuff.
10:28Yeah, if you're a Tacoma nerd,
10:29you already know how many different ways you can spec your Tacoma.
10:34Yeah.
10:35But yeah, they've still done this coming out wide for the fenders here.
10:39It still, from above, sort of looks like a dumbbell.
10:42Well, there's some fun new stuff going on at the back here.
10:44So this is a short bed, as optioned.
10:47But if you get the fancier trims than we have today,
10:51this is an actual button on either side.
10:53It's an option. It's not been ticked.
10:54No, it hasn't been ticked, no.
10:55But it electrically puts down the tailgate and up.
10:59And up.
11:00Currently, as it stands, this is just hydraulically assisted.
11:04Just a little bit assisted.
11:05You can get a 400 watt power supply there.
11:09That is incredible.
11:10No, 400's not crazy.
11:11No, no, no.
11:12The previous one had 400 watts.
11:13But what's incredible is that they've obviously noticed
11:15just how important that was to the F-150 and its sales,
11:17because there's going to be, I believe, a 2.7 kilowatt.
11:202.4, I think.
11:212.4 kilowatt, 2400 watts.
11:23That's all you need to power a campsite,
11:26some power tools, a microwave.
11:28That's if you get the I-Force Max engines.
11:30Yes, but even a good 400 watt outlet back there
11:33is a perfect move for camping and fun and utility
11:38and all that stuff, right?
11:39But this is what we've asked for a lot
11:41when it comes to redesigns.
11:43Refresh it slightly.
11:44Keep it what it is.
11:45Don't reinvent the wheel.
11:46It's still a body-owned frame truck with a solid rear axle.
11:49And they've kept it narrow.
11:51They resisted the urge,
11:52which every other truck in history apparently has done
11:55and getting bigger every generation.
11:57And it's still narrow enough that you could fit it in a garage
12:00and still get out your doors.
12:01There you go.
12:02What it did need some refreshing on significantly
12:04was the interior.
12:05Very, very much.
12:06And they've done that with some added flair.
12:08Okay, get in the passenger seat
12:10in case Billy accidentally decides to drive away.
12:13Billy's not touching that steering wheel ever again.
12:17Okay.
12:18New Toyota.
12:20Well, almost all the way new.
12:22Some of these are still like pre-production
12:24kind of development parts.
12:25Oh, the materials, yeah.
12:26Yeah.
12:27Look at that.
12:28That is good to go.
12:29That is a giant 14-inch screen.
12:32Massive.
12:33It's like maybe 10% too big.
12:36Yeah.
12:37Right?
12:38No, but when you're driving, it's good.
12:40You can just reach across.
12:41It's reduced the latency of looking away and clicking.
12:45It's funny because even though they made the screen bigger,
12:48they didn't use the real estate to fit more stuff in it.
12:51No.
12:52CarPlay is the most interesting.
12:53Yeah.
12:54Boom!
12:55It's just huge, right?
12:56And even in any of the menus of the car,
12:57if you click on like, look how big the words are.
13:00They just literally zoomed in on our screen in total.
13:03It's the phone that old people want.
13:05It's exactly what it is.
13:07Honestly, I don't mind though
13:08because you can hit this with a big glove on
13:10and that's what these are for too, right?
13:11You get these big volume knob, big climate control.
13:14They've kept the things that should be physical, physical.
13:16Yes.
13:17There was a part of this
13:18where if you looked up garish in the dictionary,
13:21you would find this blue.
13:23That's the blue.
13:24You don't have to option this,

13:29It looks like a bad wrap job.
13:31There's other options.
13:32You don't have to get the blue,
13:33but like this is just, it's too vibrant.
13:36And it's not like it's like a tone match
13:39to the outside of the truck in any way.
13:40There's no other.
13:41It's just this panel and these bits right here.
13:43Yeah.
13:44To clarify, it's not badly done.
13:45No, no, no.
13:47The color is just a strange choice.
13:49Yeah.
13:50There's some buttons missing here.
13:51This is the, all the off-road stuff that we don't have
13:54in the TRD Sport.
13:55But I do have a drive mode selector, right?
13:57And there is sport, normal and eco,
14:00sharpens everything up a little bit.
14:01And in the transmission, there's a sport mode,
14:03which just downshifts quicker.
14:04Okay.
14:05Which, pretty straightforward.
14:06Giant gear lever.
14:07Way too big.
14:09No, no, gloves, mate.
14:10Getting gloves, I get it.
14:11I know this is, for you it's difficult
14:13because you're just so mollycoddled.
14:15But think about big workman gloves.
14:17Oh, that's good.
14:18Where you have no dexterity at all.
14:20You don't know anything about that.
14:22The Edward Scissorhands has to be able to use this.
14:25That's their testing process.
14:26Yeah.

14:36Yep.
14:37Okay.
14:38So, this is really well done.
14:41I don't have any issues with it whatsoever.
14:43Driving position?
14:44Driving position is totally fine.
14:45Ridiculous amount of head height.
14:47I know we don't normally do front seat testing,
14:49but Harrison's 6'6",
14:50has plenty of headroom when sitting in here.
14:52It's definitely tight if you're 6'6",
14:54but for grown adults...
14:55But he can fit.
14:56Yeah, for grown adults
14:57that can't reach the top of the ceiling.
14:59Again, why do you need a full-size truck?
15:02The width of it.
15:04Again, in here, it feels smaller.
15:07Actually, when you were driving this
15:09before Billy took over
15:10and spun out in a six-lane highway,
15:13you said to me that this just feels
15:15like a full-size truck to you.
15:16Yeah, if you suddenly woke up
15:18sitting in the driver's seat
15:19and no one told you what it was,
15:21it feels like a full-size.
15:22Yeah.
15:23I really, really like this class of truck right now.
15:26I think that if you're looking to buy a pickup truck
15:29just because you like pickup trucks
15:31and you want to do some gardening and tow a boat,
15:33you truly do not need the Tundra.
15:36You just don't need the F-150.
15:38No.
15:39Maybe just get a Santa Cruz.
15:41No.
15:42No.
15:43No, I want a body-owned frame,
15:44solid rear axle,
15:45I want a proper pickup truck.
15:46Billy knows.
15:48Billy don't know sh**.
15:52Somehow, in giving the Tacoma a new platform,
15:55a new interior,
15:56a more spacious cabin,
15:57new engine options,
15:58a new transmission,
15:59and a bunch more options still,
16:02it seems like they didn't change it at all.
16:05In fact, it might be the most changed,
16:07unchanged car we've ever tested.
16:09And that was by design.
16:11Considering the Tacoma is one of the most loved,
16:13most used,
16:14most reliable trucks ever made,
16:16maybe it was the only route they had.
16:19The new Tacoma is a breath of fresh mid-sized air
16:22that's still very much a Tacoma,
16:25and one that's more customizable than ever.
16:28Thanks for watching.
