00:00Hello.
00:07So I hope by now some of you have seen my two previous One Track Mind videos, and you're
00:13probably wondering why I'm not doing any more BMW-related tuning videos right now.
00:19There's a couple reasons for that.
00:21One, I just got it back from the guy that was fixing the rust, which would be DMJ Automotive
00:27in Guelph, actually.
00:29And Dave there did a really good job fixing the issue that my car had.
00:34So for those that were wondering what's happened, essentially the entire area around the jack
00:40point completely rusted away and disappeared.
00:44The jack point was barely supported by anything.
00:48So he had to go in and essentially reconstruct the entire area, and the total cost for that
00:56was $500 Canadian.
00:58So if you're looking for a price kind of on what that type of repair costs, because apparently
01:03this is pretty common with these cars, that's a good price, right?
01:08So he rebuilt the rocker panel in the front, in the bottom, and he reconstructed the jack
01:15point.
01:16He rattled off like three different types of materials that he used, and he explained
01:20kind of how he did it.
01:21I honestly didn't understand it.
01:23It's really not something that I could have done myself.
01:27But that's the type of thing that happens to these cars, unfortunately, and I didn't
01:30see that when I bought the car.
01:32So it's definitely something to be aware of if you're looking for one of these, because
01:38honestly I couldn't see it.
01:39It looked like a little bit of corrosion on the surface, but as it turns out, it was totally
01:45rotted, completely and utterly rotted.
01:48So we fixed that up.
01:50You can take a look here.
01:51I just told him to keep it cheap and keep it simple, and he just riveted that panel
01:55back on the front, and if you look underneath there, you can see that he has completely
02:00reconstructed it.
02:01It looks brand new, all completely brand new, welded, and he rust-proofed that side and
02:05the other side, all for $500.
02:08Everything's said and done all in.
02:10So I'm happy that that's done now.
02:12I've got my car back.
02:13That's good.
02:14Track season's pretty much over, obviously, but I'm going to be doing a lot of stuff to
02:20this car over the winter and coming up soon.
02:23Now here's the big question that I pose to you and to myself at the same time, I guess.
02:30What do I do with this car now, right?
02:33So I'm thinking that ... I see, I don't even know.
02:37I want to turn this into a track car, but I don't know how far I want to go with that.
02:42I'm thinking that I'm going to enter some time attack events next season, some proper
02:47time attack events, and I'm going to film a whole series that goes along with that.
02:51You're going to get to see what it takes to prep this car for time attack and what it
02:56takes to prep yourself as a driver for time attack.
02:58So I'm going to be working with the Pinnacle Advanced Driving Academy, and they're going
03:02to be lending me their lead instructor, and I'm working with him.
03:06We're working together making those car reviews, and they're going to be making sure that I'm
03:10ready for time attack next year, or as ready as I can be in a car with under 200 horsepower.
03:17But we're going to do the best we can with the car, and we're going to do the best we
03:20can with me as a driver, so there'll be lots of technique videos as well as videos prepping
03:27the car for repetitive hot laps, trying to set the best time you can.
03:32So the question that I have to ask myself is, what do I want to do with this car?
03:37Do I strip it out completely and put a proper cage in it and proper seats and harness, remove
03:44everything?
03:45Or do I try and keep it kind of daily driver-ish?
03:50I don't actually know.
03:52A part of me wants to keep it something that I'm comfortable driving every day and that
03:57I can take people around in, because for some reason that just makes it seem a little bit
04:01more special when you have it on the track and you lay down an awesome time.
04:07But I don't know.
04:09I kind of want to see what the car is capable of, and I want to do it justice, do the chassis
04:15and the engine and the design justice, and make it the best it possibly can be.
04:21And for me, a big thing is safety.
04:23When you're doing repetitive hot laps, especially if there's walls around, you want to make
04:26sure that you've got the best safety setup you can.
04:29And unfortunately, you can't just kind of do one thing.
04:32You can't just wear a Hans device.
04:34You can't just wear a harness.
04:35You can't just have a roll bar.
04:37You can't just do a seat.
04:38It's not safe.
04:39You have to do it as a whole package.
04:41So I think this is kind of my tentative plan.
04:44If I have the money, if I can figure it out and budget it out, I'm going to put a half
04:48cage in the back, remove the rear seats, strip out some weight from here in the trunk.
04:52I'm going to do a proper racing bucket, proper harness, and then I'm going to get a Hans
04:58device and a new helmet, so I think that I'll be mostly safe on the track that way.
05:04It's scary, right?
05:05Because I love this car.
05:07You love your car, right?
05:08You have it, and you buy it, and you do some mods to it, and you drive it every day.
05:11And if I do that, I can't really drive it every day.
05:15What do I do?
05:16I don't know.
05:20Let me know.
05:21What would you do?
05:22All right?
05:23So I've got this car.
05:24I've got another car to drive every day.
05:26I have my Saab 9-3, which is a great daily driving car.
05:29I don't know if I need to drive this car every day, and I kind of want to see how awesome
05:35it can be if I really go all out with it.
05:39What would you do?
05:40Let me know.
05:41Put it in the comments.
05:44It's scary, right?
05:47Ripping the rear seats out?
05:50That's terrifying.
05:51Oh, by the way, so Drive Tribe is up, and you can join my tribe once it goes live for
05:56everyone to join.
05:57I think you can now.
05:58I'm not exactly sure how it works.
05:59It's just called Reviews with TH.
06:01That's the name of my tribe.
06:03You'll see my real name there, by the way, and you'll be able to kind of follow me and
06:07follow the tribe.
06:08I just wrote a little article on a WRX, a Bug Eye WRX that I took on to a rally course,
06:14which kind of changed my life, I'll be honest.
06:16Loose surface driving is nothing like driving on the track, and it's so fun, and so for
06:22One Track Mind, I'm going to be doing a comparison between the oldest generation WRX and the
06:28brand new WRX, put them head to head, so that should be pretty fun.
06:32Over the winter, we're going to have some other cool experiences that we're going to
06:35be filming with the Pinnacle Driving Academy, and maybe hooking up with some other platforms
06:44in the future, potentially, not sure yet, to kind of get this out.
06:49I hope you're enjoying the videos, I hope you are following along and not losing interest
06:54because you haven't seen a BMW video in a while, because trust me, they're coming, trust
06:58me.
06:59So, leave a comment, leave a like, I'd love to hear what you've been doing with your BMW.
07:03Tell me if you've followed any of my DIYs and tried this stuff yourself.
07:07If you have any questions, leave them in the comments.
07:09I have a lot of questions coming in now.
07:11I'm doing my best to respond to them as much as I can, right?
07:16It's difficult, as it turns out, to keep track of all this stuff, right?
07:21So I'm doing my best to follow along, just be patient with me.
07:25If you don't see a response from me, it's coming, I'll do my best.
07:30Leave a comment on here, tell me what you would do if you had this car, you had another
07:34daily driver, would you fully strip it and make it, cage it, proper seat and harness
07:40and make it a real track car, real time attack car?
07:44I don't know.
07:46Let me know.
07:48I will talk to you guys later, we've got videos coming, there might be a little bit of a break
07:52now that the track season is over, but don't worry, we've got lots of content coming for
07:55you.
07:56I will see you next time.
