00:00Hello, films are here. Today we are making a review of a film from 2022 called In Our Prime.
00:11In the most prestigious high school in South Korea, where 1% of people fit in, Han Jee-Won fails to fit in.
00:18He was the smartest student in his old school, but here he is surrounded by geniuses.
00:22He is one step away from being the worst in class, especially in mathematics,
00:26which is considered the most important subject to go to college.
00:29The other kids in the class are rich, so they can afford extra classes,
00:34but Jee-Won is on student aid and can't afford such things.
00:38His math teacher, Mr. Kim Jong-ho, reminds him that these grades won't be enough to go to a prestigious college,
00:45and tells Jee-Won to consider it an overstatement.
00:48One night, Jee-Won and his classmates give him money to steal
00:51and to bring something to drink and alcohol for everyone.
00:54But on the way back, Jee-Won is caught by the night guard, Lee Hak-sung.
00:58The next morning, Mr. Kim tries to force him to admit that he was still part of the plan,
01:03but Jee-Won appreciates his loyalty and stays quiet.
01:06This attracts the attention of the students from the Park Boram class,
01:09but he is also thrown out of the dormitory.
01:11After a while, his classmates try to give him some money as a thank you,
01:16and they are shocked when they hear that Jee-Won doesn't want it because they are friends.
01:20They discuss the possibility of bringing a late-night snack or another route,
01:24but this is impossible because Hak-sung started working as a guard.
01:27They call him a commie officer because he is a North Korean refugee.
01:31Later, Hak-sung goes to see his doctor,
01:34who tells him that working as a night guard is not good for his health,
01:38and that he should stay on sleeping pills because it can damage his biorhythm.
01:42Hak-sung reminds him that this is the only job he can get as a refugee,
01:46so only if the doctor can arrange a position for him somewhere,
01:49he will stop taking pills.
01:52Later, Hak-sung returns to his lonely apartment,
01:55where he spends his time eating nuts and drinking strawberry milk,
01:58and playing Sudoku.
02:00The next day, Jee-Won is thrown out of the dormitory.
02:03Boram teases him on his way out,
02:05saying that she thought he could be more than a loser,
02:08but it turns out that she is wrong.
02:10A few hours later, Jee-Won returns to the family apartment,
02:13which he cleans before his mother returns home.
02:16She is a widow who has always worked hard to feed him,
02:20and she is very proud to see her son in such an important uniform.
02:23There is no heart to say that he needs a place to sleep,
02:26and Jee-Won says instead that he came just to see her,
02:29and that he has to go back to school as soon as possible.
02:32It starts to rain on his way back,
02:34so Jee-Won tries to hide in a school-abandoned laboratory,
02:37but he is found by Hak-sung.
02:39The guard feels bad when he hears that Jee-Won has no place to spend the night,
02:43so he calls him to his office.
02:45While Jee-Won is sleeping, Hak-sung finds a very difficult math problem
02:49that Jee-Won could not complete.
02:51As soon as the sun rises, Hak-sung throws Jee-Won outside.
02:54The boy leaves for a math class and is shocked
02:57when he finds the problem that Hak-sung did,
03:00and not only that, all the answers are completely correct.
03:03Bo-Ram notices this and wants Jee-Won to show this to the teacher,
03:06but he tells her to shut up.
03:08After a while, Jee-Won goes to thank Hak-sung for his help
03:11and asks him to teach him how to do it,
03:13but Hak-sung just throws him outside.
03:15Later, in the classroom, Jee-Won even tells her classmates
03:18that they have problems with solving such math problems,
03:21which indicates how special Hak-sung is.
03:24Jee-Won starts following him around, begging him to teach him,
03:27but Hak-sung does not pay attention to him.
03:30One afternoon, while taking out the garbage,
03:32Hak-sung tells his classmates how he talks to students
03:35with social assistance and inferior complexes,
03:37and who counts Jee-Won on the list.
03:39When Jee-Won comes to him again to ask him to teach him,
03:42Hak-sung tells him that it is better to move
03:44and that self-pity is not a sign to be carried
03:46because it ties you to tragedy.
03:48Jee-Won explains how angry he is
03:50by the fact that others have opportunities that he does not have,
03:52so Hak-sung stands up and accepts to teach him.
03:55He just asks Jee-Won to pay him with strawberry milk.
03:58The next day, Hak-sung visits his friend,
04:00Ang-Gi-Chul, who helped him to come to South Korea
04:03because he works as Seoul's South Korean leader
04:05for support to refugees.
04:07Together, they play social games and talk about life,
04:10and when Gi-Chul gives Hak-sung the lamps he needed as a gift,
04:13Hak-sung insists on paying for them
04:15because he did not come to this land to have charitable purposes.
04:18When night falls, Hak-sung leaves the lamps
04:20inside the abandoned laboratory
04:22so he can teach Jee-Won in secret.
04:24There are three rules that Jee-Won must follow.
04:27Under one, no one can know about these hours.
04:30Under two, there are no other questions except mathematical,
04:33and under three, Hak-sung will teach him math,
04:35but he does not want to hear anything about grades and tests.
04:38After Jee-Won promises to follow all the rules,
04:41Hak-sung gives him the first exercise.
04:44Jee-Won solves it quickly,
04:46informing him that this is a high school problem,
04:48but Hak-sung tells him that he is wrong,
04:50so he finds the whole circle around the triangle.
04:52Feeling outplayed, Jee-Won thinks it is not fair
04:55because Hak-sung gave him the wrong question,
04:57but Hak-sung's point is to solve the problem in the wrong way.
05:01Yes, finding the answer is important,
05:03but understanding what the question is,
05:05it is even more important.
05:07Mathematics is a simple process of finding a solution.
05:10When Jee-Won shows him the concept,
05:12Hak-sung calls it Epsilon,
05:14while it is reminiscent of himself and his friends
05:16when they got a luxury chemistry degree
05:18as a prize for academic success.
05:20Epsilon means small and insignificant,
05:22even trivial.
05:24After the class is over,
05:26since Jee-Won still has no place to go,
05:28Hak-sung allows him to stay with him.
05:30Jee-Won discovers that Hak-sung likes to listen
05:32to classical music on an old cassette player,
05:34so he talks about classical composers for a while,
05:37which helps Hak-sung avoid Jee-Won's question about the past.
05:41The cassette player has a bad sound quality,
05:44so Jee-Won plays music on his phone,
05:46a quality that fascinates Hak-sung
05:48and helps him sleep deeply for the first time
05:50after a long time.
05:52In fact, he stays in bed until late the next morning,
05:55and when he wakes up, Jee-Won has already left for class.
05:58Mr. Kim has some important news
06:00for his math students.
06:02Instead of having a final exam,
06:04his class will participate in a prestigious
06:06Pythagorean math competition,
06:08which is calculated as their test.
06:10The students are not happy because of this,
06:12because they have only two months to practice,
06:14but Mr. Kim expects everyone to win gold.
06:17Jee-Won meets Hak-sung every day
06:19for hours of math,
06:21but Bo-Ram begins to notice how often Jee-Won
06:23buys strawberry milk,
06:25almost as if he is an addict.
06:27One evening, there is a specifically difficult task
06:29for which Jee-Won must know the technique for solving,
06:31but Hak-sung explains that he expects him
06:33to do it all manually.
06:35Three hours later, Jee-Won manages to solve it,
06:37so Hak-sung shows him something special.
06:39Popular mathematician Ben Hand-Riemann
06:41calculated 38 decimals squared root of 2 manually
06:43to become more intimate with the solving process,
06:45which you can't do
06:47only if you remember the formula.
06:49This is very useful when it comes
06:51to better understanding of math.
06:53Hak-sung rejects Jee-Won's answer,
06:55whether it is correct or not,
06:57because it is his homework to discover it himself.
06:59It's actually a mathematician's job.
07:01As the weeks go by,
07:03Jee-Won becomes better and better
07:05at math every day.
07:07Jee-Won has some devastating news.
07:09His close friend and colleague
07:11from the list of social students
07:13is transferred back to his old school,
07:15admitting that coming here
07:17was never worth it.
07:19Now Jee-Won comes to the conclusion
07:21of what to do with his situation,
07:23and Bo-Ram tries to listen to him,
07:25but he feels that she is laughing at him
07:27by saying that they are in the same situation
07:29when she is actually a rich child.
07:31Their conversation is interrupted
07:33when her mother comes to pick her up.
07:35Bo-Ram is actually also on social assistance
07:37because her parents are divorced,
07:39but she doesn't need it at all.
07:41Her mother is also angry
07:43because she listens to piano music
07:45because she wants Bo-Ram to focus
07:47on her studies,
07:49so she hired Mr. Kim
07:51to be her private teacher,
07:53which is illegal.
07:55Later that night, Jee-Won talks to Hak-sung
07:57about his friends and asks
07:59if he should also transfer.
08:01Hak-sung encourages her to give up
08:03because the most important thing for success
08:05is not intelligence, but the courage
08:07to fight to the end.
08:09To prove his point,
08:11he shows Jee-Won the tasks he corrected.
08:13Although there were a few mistakes
08:15in the final solution,
08:17the boy learned the rules of the solution process
08:19from them.
08:21That same night, Jee-Won's suspension
08:23ends, so he returns to the dormitory,
08:25but he admits that he needs
08:27to share a room with Hak-sung.
08:29The next day, Bo-Ram offers
08:31Jee-Won his secret.
08:33After thanking Hak-sung
08:35for taking care of Jee-Woo,
08:37she asks him if she can come from time to time
08:39and Hak-sung accepts everything
08:41as long as she keeps the secret to herself.
08:43Bo-Ram is also called a commie officer
08:45and this confuses Hak-sung.
08:47He may be from North Korea,
08:49but he never served in the army.
08:51For some reason, he doesn't care to explain
08:53and was taken in.
08:55At that moment, he notices a group of students
08:57wandering around the campus,
08:59and Hak-sung decides not to do anything about it.
09:01The next night, Jee-Woo asks Hak-sung
09:03why he learned so much math.
09:05He explains that at first,
09:07he did it for the sake of the students
09:09and the future of his family,
09:11but the more he learned about it,
09:13the more he found beauty,
09:15so he fell in love with it.
09:17Then they call Bo-Ram to join Hak-sung
09:19at the piano so he can learn
09:21a little cool trick,
09:23sharing notes on each digit.
09:25The two of them make a beautiful melody
09:27In the end, Jee-Woo corrects Mr. Kim's answer
09:29using Hak-sung's logic,
09:31which taught him about the incorrect question.
09:33Anyway, Mr. Kim hates him for that.
09:35The answer may be correct,
09:37but that's not what the examiner wanted,
09:39and that's the only thing
09:41students should worry about,
09:43giving a solution that is expected,
09:45not the one that is correct.
09:47Everything is up to the test technique,
09:49but Jee-Woo does not accept this
09:51and replies that he will still give
09:53the correct answer on the test.
09:55Jee-Woo then informs Mr. Kim
09:57that he will not pass.
09:59In the afternoon,
10:01during Hak-sung's visit,
10:03Gi-Chul gives him a smart phone
10:05to make it easier for them to find him.
10:07Hak-sung luckily shows Jee-Woo later,
10:09and the boy can't help
10:11him not to read long theses on a small screen.
10:13To help, Jee-Woo asks a friend
10:15from the class to join him
10:17in the computer lab to print
10:19the entire document and give it to Hak-sung.
10:21The next day is the Pythagorean test.
10:23Jee-Woo does a great job,
10:25thanks to Hak-sung's hours,
10:27while Bo-Ram starts very well
10:29by remembering the music,
10:31but she soon becomes frustrated.
10:33The pressure takes over
10:35and she eventually leaves the school
10:37without finishing the test.
10:39Her mother is forced to stay
10:41at home because of the shame
10:43and lies to the school,
10:45saying that she will go on a trip.
10:47When Jee-Woo tries to contact her,
10:49all his messages are ignored.
10:51Bo-Ram doesn't show up,
10:53but Hak-sung enjoys it so much
10:55that he is about to cry.
10:57After that, Hak-sung invites Jee-Woo
10:59to have dinner with him,
11:01forcing Jee-Woo to realize
11:03that this is the first time
11:05he sees Hak-sung eating.
11:07That same evening,
11:09someone pulls out the Pythagorean test
11:11on the internet,
11:13which causes a disturbance
11:15for the teachers,
11:17who now have to find a student
11:19This man also comes from North Korea
11:21and invites Hak-sung with a doctor,
11:23remembering him from the day
11:25Hak-sung studied at the university
11:27he went to.
11:29This man also calls Hak-sung
11:31a well-known mathematical genius
11:33and thinks that Jee-Woo is his son,
11:35which puts them in an awkward situation.
11:37Hak-sung thanks the man for remembering
11:39and quickly leaves work,
11:41refusing to answer Jee-Woo's questions.
11:43When he goes home,
11:45Hak-sung remembers the good times
11:47with Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
11:49and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
11:51and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
11:53and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
11:55and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
11:57and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
11:59and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:01and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:03and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:05and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:07and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:09and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:11and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:13and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:15and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:17and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:19and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:21and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:23and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:25and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:27and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:29and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:31and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:33and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:35and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:37and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:39and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:41and Jee-Woo and Jee-Woo
12:43The next day, Mr. Kim calls Jee-Woo
12:45to show him a video of him
12:47sneaking out of a computer lab
12:49with some printed sheets in his hands.
12:51Jee-Woo tries to explain
12:53that this is not connected, but he has no way
12:55to prove it. Between the evidence
12:57and the fact that he magically became
12:59better at math in a few months,
13:01no one will believe him, so Mr. Kim
13:03offers him an agreement. If he accepts
13:05the transfer, he will not accuse him in public.
13:07Unfortunately, it seems that Jee-Woo
13:09comes to everyone's ears
13:11and I'm worried about it
13:13because she knows it's not true.
13:15Gi-Chul has some of his own problems
13:17as well. North Korea is angry
13:19because South Korea is taking Hak-Sung's achievements
13:21especially since these investigations
13:23are related to military encryption,
13:25so NIS wants Gi-Chul to persuade
13:27Hak-Sung to appear on TV
13:29to clear his name.
13:31Hak-Sung's name is everywhere in the news now
13:33and his old colleague visits him to persuade him
13:35to return to North Korea together.
13:37However, things change when Mom
13:39finds out that he's asking because
13:41when he returns, he'll get his revenge
13:43and that only makes him angry
13:45because he mentioned what happened to his son.
13:47Gi-Chul visits Hak-Sung
13:49to apologize for not being able
13:51to keep NIS away from his back
13:53but Hak-Sung is still grateful
13:55for all the protection this year.
13:57While Hak-Sung is packing to leave the city,
13:59Gi-Chul returns him a document
14:01with his investigations that Hak-Sung
14:03tried to throw away many years ago
14:05and Gi-Chul saved them because he thought
14:07they were too valuable to be thrown away.
14:09At that moment, Yi-Wo arrives
14:11but he decides to stand in front
14:13when he hears Galaam.
14:15Hak-Sung is angry because his investigations
14:17cost the life of his son,
14:19so he refuses to put them on TV.
14:21After Gi-Chul leaves, Yi-Wo tries to talk
14:23to Hak-Sung, but the older man
14:25shivers at him, refusing to accept
14:27that they are nothing but a teacher and a student.
14:29After that, Yi-Wo receives a call
14:31from a disturbed Bo-Ram who doesn't understand
14:33why he's letting them speak like that
14:35In the meantime, Hak-Sung arrives
14:37at a bus stop and when he realizes
14:39that he saw his son's face on the sidewalk,
14:41he starts to remember the night
14:43when Ta-I-Yon died.
14:45After he entered the house,
14:47Ta-I-Yon starts to argue with his father
14:49accusing him of running away to South Korea
14:51for personal reasons
14:53because he did it when his mother
14:55was sick and had tuberculosis.
14:57Hak-Sung insists that he did it
14:59to give his son a better life,
15:01but Ta-I-Yon accuses him of doing
15:03it to give his son a better life,
15:05but Ta-I-Yon accuses him of doing
15:07it to give his son a better life,
15:09but Ta-I-Yon accuses him of doing
