00:00I was a brand new nurse I think it was my second shift all right who's doing
00:19it I thought they were playing a joke on me I could hear scratching in the walls
00:26like something with claws I was really scared and I felt my heart rate jump
00:50it was very hard to make myself go in the room but it had to be done don't
00:55take me please no please don't let them take me the children
01:26it's the 1980s joy powers is a young nurse at the start of her career I
01:37worked as a critical care nurse in a large Catholic hospital in southwest
01:44Tennessee
01:47it was in the 1980s I was young and it was a metropolitan area it was a lot of
02:01fun it was exciting
02:06this was my first job in a critical care unit
02:11I had a lot to learn good evening y'all hi joy oh honey no chewing gum on the
02:21floor sorry and I'll go wash my hands now
02:33the Catholic facility was was strict but in a nice way and they had rules and
02:41they had guidelines that we would all follow
02:53not doing two or three of these just two
02:59I was a brand new nurse I think it was my second shift
03:12I hear the water turn on in the hopper the hopper is something where we used to
03:19wash our things that we use to care for patients there was no mistaking that the
03:25water had been turned on
03:33the water doesn't just trickle it was just flooding open for you to turn on
03:40the water it takes some pretty good force for it to just go on was very
03:44unusual so I come back down and it happened again and I heard the hopper go
03:53on and I went to go turn it off
04:10I
04:41I thought they were playing a joke on me that they were doing an initiation and
04:48so I asked them all right who's doing it well I guess our ghost is back what are
05:00you talking about sometimes we have ghosts and they do stuff a ghost
05:11seriously you expect me to believe that believe what you want honey but it wasn't
05:19us
05:22if it's okay I'm gonna take a break now
05:35in the break room in the 80s unfortunately was no big deal for nurses
05:41respiratory therapists doctors to smoke in the hospital so we would go to the
05:47I was really scared
05:53how can you not be
05:57I just finished smoking on my cigarette
06:08I was really scared
06:11I was really scared
06:14I was really scared
06:17I was really scared
06:20I was really scared
06:23I just finished smoking on my cigarette
06:30I had just put it out and as I was leaving the break room I just got into
06:34the door of the break room and I turned around to see the ashtray on the floor
06:42and all of the ashes and butts on the floor
06:46it's okay it's okay sit down it just scared the crap out of me it was on the
06:55table and it just flew what is going on here
07:03it's not gonna hurt you
07:07I am a young nurse brand new have no idea what this thing is and I'm
07:14feeling like I'm being made fun of until this point and that's when they
07:19literally sat me down and said really it's not gonna hurt you but I wasn't
07:23convinced of that
07:28joy eases back into work she needs to start her rounds but the halls aren't as
07:34inviting as they first seemed
07:45yeah
08:06how are you doing tonight Fred healthy as a hog we had in the old unit we had
08:13these wooden doors and the wooden doors had glass panes so on the patient's side
08:19for privacy we had blinds do you want the blinds closed for the night you
08:24always know what I like joy
08:39sleep well
08:43yeah
08:59and I felt my heart rate jump
09:04the noise of the blinds seemed to get more and more aggressive
09:18I would almost equate it to somebody doing this up down up down up down fast
09:34and then it was really scary it was like stop how do you make this thing stop I
09:42was losing it at that point
09:56spirits manipulate objects for many reasons they want to get someone's
10:00attention they want them to know that they exist in the same space they want
10:04to see how they're going to react will they acknowledge them or ignore them or
10:08were they simply leaving fear I felt literally like the entity or whatever
10:16this was was showing up for me and trying to get me nervous and that was
10:23working scared the fire out of me it really did and that's when I said to
10:30myself oh there's something to this
10:38the nurses aren't the only ones who are experiencing mysterious events then we
10:44started getting information from patients there was this one patient he
10:50was precious
10:54how's my favorite patient doing tonight
11:04hey are you alright I saw something he was telling me about the lady in white
11:13and that his wife had come to him with her and he wanted to go with her what are
11:19you talking about Fred the description was that of what sounded like a nun in
11:25the habit that had the habit on but it was all white she came to help me I'm
11:33not ready to go um I'm glad to hear that
11:41but I want to
11:44I want to
11:48I want to
11:52and I said thank you for letting us know and we'll do everything we can to
11:57save your life if that's what you want
12:10just a couple of hours later and he did have a medical emergency
12:17and he did go and he did die seeing the lady in white and seeing his wife
12:47Mrs. Jones in room 7 saw the lady in white
12:57I started tracking it when patients would tell us that they would see the
13:02lady in white immediately I would go ahead and get the crash cart ready
13:08whether they died or whether they lived there would be a medical emergency for
13:13that patient every time let's move
13:22it was almost like she was there to help them we're there to let them know it's
13:29going to be okay
13:44whereas the lady in white proves to be a good omen her presence only confirms
13:52that another sinister entity walks the halls
14:02nursing is hard enough then have all of this other activity come with it that
14:07you're powerless to do anything about I guess because I was young and because I
14:12was new I took it very personally because it seemed to happen quite
14:17frequently when I was there that's when I had the opportunity to tell everybody
14:21I think this thing is trying to get my attention I'm afraid
14:32it's not following you joy it's after me
14:37what do you mean my colleague shared for the first time no it's me she said I
14:44have seen him before it followed me home once one night when I was driving it
14:53popped up in my backseat and I saw it in the rearview
14:59it's him I know it's him she did not want to talk about the dark man she was
15:09afraid of the dark man I didn't know if you'd believe me I believe you I went
15:19immediately to our nurse manager she went to administration I know with the
15:24Catholic Church there's very specific steps I mean it's not like we're eating
15:30or sleeping we're gonna start killing patients ourselves out and neglect to
15:34see we're supposed to be protecting these patients and we can't even do that
15:37what are we gonna do this whole place needs to be bathed in flames I don't
15:41know what is here
15:46we can't give up we have to be strong for our patients
15:55hello my children the priest showed up on one of our shifts and just came in
16:02told us I hear y'all have been having a little bit of problem here thank you for
16:08coming I'll defeat this evil God will defeat this evil because they called in
16:17the priest it really did make it for me that it was a real threat
16:25he went room to room and he touched each room and he prayed over each room
16:38was when they called in the priest that I knew they were taking it serious
16:43thankfully I had taken it serious and I felt very supported and very comforted
16:55you
17:03come my children we must unite against the darkness
17:13and then he touched each one of us he prayed over us
17:24give us this day
17:55shall be well
18:02with thee it shall be well with thee whole atmosphere of the unit changed it
18:11became instantly calm it became instantly like a weight came off
18:25we could breathe again I could breathe again
18:31it was better after the father blessed the unit
18:36it felt like almost like a breeze had blown through the unit it was that
18:41different
18:43amen
18:52the weeks pass and there are no more reports of paranormal activity from
18:56either patients or staff we thought we're not going to have a problem now
19:02not so not so
19:06you
19:09your transfers happening today I'm gonna go check now if it's ready for you
19:14we had a lady that had open-heart surgery she was doing fabulous she was
19:21about to be discharged from the unit to the step-down unit
19:35she was terrified she said he's over in the corner he's dark he's mean he's
19:50growling at me I don't like him get me out of here
19:57nothing was going to calm her down
20:05and I heard her scream out
20:17you feel completely helpless what did I just witness I don't know we had to open
20:24her up and we saw what's called a blown aorta blown open like a flower boom there
20:33was no evidence of that in her chart from surgery they didn't see anything
20:39there was no precursor no warning except for her telling me about the dark man
20:45and how she didn't like it there
20:51there are so many negative paranormal occurrences in this ward that a Catholic
20:56priest had to be involved to a bless the space as a paranormal researcher I
21:00believe that this is something on the land so regardless of the blessings and
21:05the purification of the space this might be something that is just infused in a
21:10structure that keeps coming back over and over for some reason it was like
21:17almost like a last haha I'm still not gone the dark seemed to me to be very
21:27destructive it seemed to be bent on negative it seemed to be very heavy very
21:34hard whereas the lady in white was so calm and so comforting always soothing
21:44it changed my life actually it had a profound effect on me I became really
21:53interested in the spiritual component of our life I fortunately had to leave
22:01the unit to move but to my knowledge it continued even after I left
22:24you
22:35registered nurse Deborah gullet accepts a new assignment overseeing palliative
22:41care for an elderly bedridden patient I was working as a home care nurse in
22:47northwest Louisiana in this particular case I was going to a patient's home who
22:52was actively dying of cancer Deborah I'm so glad you're here how's your dad
22:58feeling today honestly I think he's getting worse the first few staff
23:05members that come before the nurse comes out had a very bad uneasy feeling about
23:09it my nurse's aide and I went out the first time and the nurse's aide would
23:13not stay are you on your own today yes my assistant won't be joining me it'll
23:19just be me after that I was the only one that went into the home no one wanted
23:25to go there I'll go check on him
23:33the front part of the home was okay but as you walked back toward his bedroom it
23:39became darker we would turn lights on to you know light our way down the hallway
23:47to get to the bedroom and it still was this pervasive darkness
24:17hello mr. Jones how are you feeling today this gentleman was very withdrawn
24:33he was very emaciated when I met him and just very debilitated could barely move
24:42you must be freezing there was just this pervading darkness that concentrated in
24:55the bedroom where the man was oh thank you Deborah
25:02that's much better hardly see a thing in here
25:14it was just heavy feeling of fear and anger but I could not leave the patient
25:25let's take a look at you I would take his vital signs check his blood pressure
25:31look for signs of advancement of the disease or his dying process
25:44there you see
25:54is this your wife yeah yeah she's lovely
26:13there how's that
26:17yeah
26:23over the following days Deborah gets to know her patient he's frail his legs are
26:29paralyzed but his mind is still sharp I got to know him over the course of the
26:35first few days during the war he had flown a plane for the military do you
26:43miss flying yes and no not all memories are good how do you mean did you nearly
26:55crash no I was piloting one night on a sortie the bombs dropped on the wrong
27:06on the wrong target many people were killed including children
27:18he told me that he had felt a lot of guilt about this that it was an accident
27:24as God is my witness I am so sorry I'm so sorry
27:29would you like to pray I tried to reassure him he was Catholic I prayed
27:40with him a lot every visit pray for us
27:50he would cry often and tell me how afraid he was to be alone that frightened
27:56him most of all as Deborah continues to care for her patient she starts to see
28:05why her colleagues didn't want this posting from the first visit I noticed
28:12the temperature being lower in his room severely lower was very cold in there at
28:18all times
28:36I can hear scratching in the walls like something with claws behind his bed and
28:44in the ceiling I heard sounds in the closet
29:01the noises were terrifying
29:15despite the unsettling events Deborah has a patient to care for
29:26I feel like I was being watched every time I went in the room
29:31in the closet you could hear knocking sounds and clothes hangers rattling
29:51almost like a breeze was going through the closet even though there was no air
29:56movement
30:10what is it
30:15I tried to ignore all the sounds and happenings so that I wouldn't make him
30:20afraid
30:26nothing
30:31everything's fine
30:50I could hear the noises from the hallway was very difficult to go into
30:55the room but I could not leave him alone I had to do my job
31:03it was very hard to make myself go in the room but it had to be done
31:21mr. Jones wake up you're having a nightmare
31:26he was very frightened he was so afraid he couldn't sleep
31:31despite the medication we were giving him he was just tortured at all times
31:35day and night please don't let them take me who the children he believed that
31:44the children he had accidentally killed were coming for him I discounted it at
31:48first because the gentleman was dying and he was on medications for pain and I
31:52thought maybe he was hallucinating this was the first time I ever had someone
31:57tell me that something evil had come for them there everything's gonna be all
32:03right now
32:06I'll be right back I just need to get another ball
32:19the first time I saw them I thought my mind was playing tricks on me from
32:38anxiety from going in the room
32:41Deborah's patient reports seeing shadowy figures the size of small
32:50children running around his room and it's tempting to just dismiss these as
32:55hallucinations nothing more than the products of a dying brain don't let them
32:59take me away except for the fact that Deborah sees them too they moved very
33:12fast in the room they were just very dark shadowy figures I got this
33:21pervading sense that they wanted me dead or gone or both please don't let them
33:26take me away
33:39please don't let them take me it's okay I'm not gonna leave you it's tempting to
33:51jump to the conclusion that all ghosts shadow figures are the spirits of the
33:56dead and in some cases that's entirely possible but there's another intriguing
34:00possibility perhaps they are a psychic manifestation of the old veterans guilt
34:09the remorse that has been eating away at him for decades since his return from
34:14the war somehow given form manifesting in his room and tormenting in the way
34:20that only our own thoughts can torment us
34:29after that night he trusted me and told me he didn't want me to think he was
34:35crazy and he was very afraid that I would discount his story and think he
34:40was nuts and I did not
34:51I tried to be very matter-of-fact about it and very rational I would pray a
34:57prayer of protection over myself and him and the family before I arrived at the
35:01home he told me that he saw them all day and all night that they would come and
35:07go and they watched him
35:38he was yelling for help and sounded very desperate and very afraid
36:01he was shaking when I reached him he was terrified
36:07oh no no no they're children they're scratching my legs they're clawing at me
36:13you're okay
36:15he told me that he could see the children at the foot of the bed
36:21grabbing the covers and reaching under to scratch his legs
36:25they had been scratching him all night and he couldn't make them stop and he
36:29was very very afraid
36:31legs I gotta stop them please
36:45there was blood on the sheets
36:50I found scratches all over his lower legs some were very deep and you could
36:56see the blood oozing from them the sheets were bloody all around his legs
37:02what happened children they're clawing at my legs please make them stop
37:12I tried to comfort him I tried to make sure that he was physically safe
37:18I don't believe that he could have done it himself
37:21he was very immobile he couldn't even reach down to scratch his leg
37:26I kept going through my mind thinking of any physical cause that this could be
37:31happening something environmental or something in his body with a disease
37:34process I couldn't come up with an explanation for it at all
37:46I couldn't believe these things were happening before my eyes
37:52I was just kind of in a state of shock
38:04I had not seen anything like this before especially of any kind of paranormal origin
38:14as a skeptic it would be easy to debunk any one aspect of this case alone
38:19the scratches perhaps the noises the temperature the light the shadow
38:25figures but when you put them all together we have this confluence of
38:30evidence and it's impossible to avoid coming to a paranormal conclusion
38:41after I bathed him and got the scratches cleaned up and got the blood cleaned up
38:47he had to stay in that room because the oxygen setup worked in that room
38:52there was no way we can move him I thought about that even but I don't
38:56think it would have done any good I think they would have followed him
39:02seeing someone physically harmed in front of me with no way to explain it
39:07frightened me horribly I knew that if it hurt one person it could certainly hurt
39:12others in the house including myself
39:17it seemed to be getting worse as he got sicker every time the noises would get
39:27louder and louder the banging in the walls and the rattling in the closet
39:37I was very afraid that I would be attacked next
39:46the family and I discussed his needs and finally we went ahead and called in a
39:50priest
39:54thank you for coming father
39:58I explained to a priest that I knew in town what was going on and that I needed
40:02some special help and he came to give absolution
40:06where's your father he's upstairs
40:10I can show you up
40:17okay
40:29his room's just at the end of the hall
40:34something feels wrong
40:42I have to go in alone
40:46okay
40:57the priest stayed with the patient probably about an hour alone with him in
41:01the room
41:08I didn't hear any noises inside the room from in the hallway where I was
41:16I don't know
41:46everything's alright now
42:02by that evening things seemed to be a little more normal
42:07I wasn't as afraid anymore
42:11it was a huge relief
42:14after the priest left the lights were different it was brighter in the room
42:20he had left a crucifix and some holy water at the bedside and he could talk
42:26and sleep and be at ease finally
42:29she's here with me now my wife
42:33isn't she beautiful
42:36she's lovely
42:37she's lovely
42:39after the entities of the children were gone he told me that he could see his
42:44deceased wife sitting in the chair in the corner where the children had been
42:50she was sitting in the chair he said and smiling at him
42:55I could not see her but he did
42:58and he told me that she was coming for him
43:02he was not afraid anymore
43:05he was ready to go with that point
43:08and he wanted to go with her
43:11he died the next day
43:14he had finally gone on to see his wife without all that guilt hanging over him
43:20I've had many unexplainable incidents working as a nurse and dealing with
43:25death so much this was not my first experience
43:28with anything that I believe to be paranormal but it was definitely one of
43:31the most terrifying ones
43:58you
