00:00It's a smaller facility.
00:10The floor I mostly worked on was Alzheimer's and dementia floor.
00:13Okay, it's almost time for bed.
00:15I'm watching the show.
00:16He passed away in a public area and it was pretty traumatic for some of the other residents
00:21to see.
00:27The first time I walked into the building, some places it just, it feels off.
00:33I was pretty new to the facility.
00:35He looked at me and ran into a patient's room.
00:39Did I just see an apparition?
00:42I'm by myself on that floor and all of a sudden I hear two growls and I said, no, I am not
00:52going up to the fourth floor.
00:59The call bell continued to go off again and again.
01:03This is my room!
01:05Something here is haunting the house.
01:07Get out!
01:09I've never seen anything like that.
01:16Get out!
01:46Recent graduate, Jennifer Eade, starts her career as a personal support worker.
01:52She works nights at a long-term care facility.
01:55It's a smaller facility.
01:57It's personally owned and very nice.
02:00The people that work there truly care about the people.
02:05There's probably 200 residents in the facility.
02:10The floor I mostly worked on was Alzheimer's and dementia floor.
02:13We do all the personal care that you would do, anything that you would do for yourself
02:17during the day and the night, they can't do anymore, we do for them.
02:23When you're at the end of life, you need support, you need people there with you.
02:32Everybody comes in by themselves and you do leave by yourself, but it's always good to
02:37feel comforted before you leave.
02:40Door open or closed?
02:42Open please, I'd like the light from the hallway.
02:44Of course.
02:46We do have many wonderful residents.
02:48You're not supposed to get attached to people, but we are human and we get attached to many
02:52residents.
02:53Sweet dreams, Jack.
02:57A series of paranormal encounters will soon test Jennifer's faith in her calling and demonstrate
03:06that attachment can take on a supernatural dimension.
03:16Those look like some really nice photos.
03:19The man in room 213 lived there about five or six years.
03:23He liked to be left alone, kept to himself.
03:26Okay, it's almost time for bed.
03:28I'm watching the show.
03:29All right, it's okay, I'll come back for you.
03:35You can tell he was a hard kind of man through his life and that's just who he was, his personality.
03:41He was there for a very long time, but near the end of his life, very agitated.
03:47Where's that nurse?
03:49Where are you?
03:51Come on!
03:52He used to ring the call bell constantly.
04:01Everyone's asleep.
04:03Guess who keeps buzzing?
04:05I just put him to sleep.
04:07Lots of times during the shift, at least 10 times or more, that call bell would go off
04:12for whatever reason.
04:13I mean, things he needed or just because maybe he was lonely.
04:19Where are you?
04:20I'm calling you!
04:26He passed away in a public area and it was pretty traumatic for some of the other residents
04:30to see.
04:34I'm sorry.
04:43He was from another country and they had to keep him in the cold storage in the basement
04:48until they could fly his body to the country he was going to for burial.
04:52So everybody was kind of on edge that there was, you know, a body in the building for
04:56that long.
04:58Nobody really wanted to go down to the basement.
05:00That's where he was being kept.
05:12Shoot.
05:16The cart's running low.
05:17Looks like no one wants to go to the basement for supplies.
05:20I still didn't want to go downstairs.
05:22I can go.
05:23What do we need?
05:24I can go.
05:25What do we need?
05:26More of these pills.
05:31Want to start on the chest checks?
05:33Yes.
05:34Please.
05:40My co-worker said, why don't you start doing rounds?
05:54We have little flashlights and we make sure that you have the flashlight on someone's
05:58chest, not in their face.
06:04Just go room by room, make sure everyone's in bed, sleeping nicely.
06:24Okay.
06:42So I started walking down that hallway.
06:48I'm by myself on that floor.
06:50Everybody's asleep.
06:52And all of a sudden, I hear right in my ear.
06:56Doing rounds.
06:59It was a male's voice.
07:01It was deep, but precise, and it was very close to my ear.
07:05And all the hair on the back of my neck went up, and I had chills through my whole body.
07:13I knew somebody was there, but there was physically no one I could see there.
07:17So there was no way that somebody from one of the rooms had said that.
07:35I went back to that nurse's station, and there I sat until the nurse came back up.
07:41What's the matter, Jen?
07:43Someone came up behind me and said,
07:47doing rounds.
07:51It was a male voice, and no one was there.
07:54It's the late shift, Jen.
07:56My co-worker responded with saying that I was overtired, I had done too many night shifts,
08:03and that's probably why I was hearing voices.
08:07This was something more.
08:13I hadn't overtired before, and I've never heard voices.
08:16Doing rounds.
08:19I'll never forget that voice.
08:23Jennifer moves past this unnerving event.
08:27She has her residents to attend to, both old and new.
08:31Come have a seat on the bed.
08:34Bring your legs up and around. Perfect.
08:37Of course, they refill the rooms with new people all the time.
08:41So after that gentleman passed away, we moved a new female resident into that room, room 213.
08:50Thank you, dear.
08:51I'll come see you.
08:52You have a good sleep, then.
08:53See you tomorrow.
08:54Okay, goodnight.
09:01One night I was doing a night shift, and that call bell went off.
09:07And I thought, oh, she must need something.
09:10She's usually asleep.
09:29I went down all the way to the room 213, and she was fast asleep.
09:35She was fast asleep.
09:54She wasn't near the call bell button, so I shut it off.
09:58So then I went back to the nurse's station.
10:06Hey, you got another call late. 213.
10:13Are you sure? I just came from there.
10:18Yeah. 213.
10:22Okay.
10:30The call bell continued to go off.
10:33The call bell continued to go off again.
10:38And again.
10:42And again.
10:43And I kept walking all the way down to 213 to find her in bed sleeping.
10:50The room felt kind of different that night, too. A little colder.
10:55The next day, Jennifer speaks to the new resident.
11:03Hi. I'm here.
11:06Last night, your call button went off a bunch of times, and you were sleeping.
11:14I said, you know, do you ever see anybody in your room or anything?
11:18Because it was really weird last night.
11:20And she's like, there's a man that comes in my room all the time.
11:24And he's creepy. He's tall.
11:28And stringy, white hair.
11:32Keep singing.
11:33Please, this is my room!
11:36I'm sure I wasn't dreaming.
11:38When she told me that, I thought, he never left, and he probably never will.
11:43Patients report seeing the energy of the call button go off.
11:48Patients report seeing the energy of this old man returning to the room, wanting his room back.
11:54That place was still his. He intended to keep it.
11:57So it could just be a situation here where he's intending to stake claim on that room.
12:03This is my room!
12:07The ghostly occupant of room 213 remains an ongoing and disturbing presence.
12:13Unfortunately for Jennifer, he's only one of several spirits that roam the facility.
12:28Doing rounds?
12:32Shut up.
12:33I'm just keeping it light.
12:35Yeah, keep it to yourself.
12:37He's a jokester. He loves to play jokes on us and tricks on us all the time. Keeps us on our toes.
12:47Hi, Sally. I have another blanket.
12:50Hi, Sally. I have another blanket.
13:03I sensed someone behind me, and I thought for sure I was going to be scared by him.
13:11Like, I'm ready for him this time. And I thought, okay, just keep walking.
13:20And all of a sudden I feel a hand on my shoulder.
13:26I turned around and there was nobody there. That's when all the hair went off on the back of my neck.
13:34And my heart kind of stopped for a second once I realized there's nobody there.
13:39Jennifer has felt death on her shoulder.
13:43She now knows the inexplicable can happen when tending to someone at the end of their life.
13:48Sweet dreams, Jack.
13:56But even this knowledge can't prepare her for what happens next.
14:00Sometimes when you see things that aren't usual, let's say, in a disease or in a person that you know a month ago didn't act the way they act.
14:10And they're displaying things that I've never, ever seen.
14:14No.
14:15Just one little bite, Jack.
14:16No. No. No. No.
14:18Screaming, hollering, and I mean, the voice sounds very different.
14:21No. I said no.
14:23You're trying to poison me.
14:24Jack, I'm not trying to poison you.
14:25No.
14:26I am not trying to poison you.
14:27No.
14:28I am not trying to poison you.
14:29No.
14:30The patient actually got violent.
14:31Get in here. Get in here.
14:33Some people, I think, when they have certain diseases, they become more vulnerable, vulnerable to negative things.
14:39And I don't know if something attached itself to this person.
14:48Nothing can prepare you for something that you don't know how to handle.
14:52This is on a different level.
14:54I mean, this is stuff that people don't talk about.
14:59No.
15:03It sounded like someone's being tortured in that room.
15:08Not just myself. All my co-workers were very disturbed by the noise and the sound.
15:17Late one night, the commotion escalates to a disturbing new level.
15:23I'm walking down the hall one day, and I hear deep, guttural voices coming from that room.
15:29Strange voices, like just deep, deeper than usual.
15:39I don't know if it was just mumble, jumble, but like just really, really strange noises coming out of this person.
15:53Grrr.
15:55Grrr.
15:56Grrr.
15:58Grrr.
16:00Working almost 25 years in health care, I've never seen anything like that.
16:04Grrr.
16:06Grrr.
16:10There was nothing in my training that would prepare me for these events.
16:13Say it! Say it! Run if you want to!
16:16It scares you because they sound like they have a possession or they are not alone.
16:26They have demons.
16:27It's very scary.
16:38I don't know how to deal with stuff like that.
16:40Upon leaving the room, I would always say, you're not allowed to come with me.
16:49You must not attach.
16:54I did go in that room with a rosary every time because I didn't know if there was something
17:00attached to that resident, but I didn't want it to attach to me.
17:04I would give a cross to my coworker, listen, just put this in your pocket because whatever
17:09is going on with this person and whatever is attached to this person, we don't want
17:14it to be attached to us, and they'd all agree, so even if they believed or not.
17:18Dear Lord, please bless the people and residents in this place.
17:23May they stay well and happy and safe, amen.
17:29They teach you how to care for someone who is palliative at the end of life.
17:34They teach you how to care for the body after the fact.
17:37They never talk about how to care for the spirit.
17:41It's just not talked about, but people know.
17:48Although unsettling, these uncanny experiences reveal a spiritual side to end-of-life care.
17:56Jennifer resolves to ensure her patients' transitions are as peaceful as possible.
18:02So there was one family where the father was actively dying and he was in palliative
18:07care for almost two weeks, and that's a very long time, and his daughter, she didn't have
18:15a lot of support.
18:16He's just lingering, it's breaking my heart, I can't do this.
18:25I was there with her quite often, I spent the night most nights, and it was breaking
18:29her heart to watch him this long dying.
18:35Maybe he's waiting for someone to come and get him.
18:38She turned to him and she said, Dad, I'm going to miss you and I love you.
18:44She's like, but I'll be okay.
18:46If Mom comes to get you, you need to go with Mom.
18:49Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.
18:51It's okay, Dad.
18:54And I looked and I just happened to see above him, like electricity in the air floating.
19:15It was amazing, it was blue, kind of yellowy colors, just sparks, it looked like electricity
19:19floating through the air over the man's body.
19:26The sparkles hung in the air for a few seconds and then they were gone.
19:32I actually felt at peace and I felt that his spirit has moved now and he can move on to
19:42whatever is next.
19:49Many times when people pass away, often the family or the witnesses report seeing a discharge
19:54of energy, whether it be in lights or sparkles.
20:01There's a discharge or release of some kind of energy and people's perception interprets
20:07it in a different way.
20:10All he needed was that confirmation that it was okay to go.
20:16This isn't it.
20:17This isn't the end for all of us in humanity.
20:21We are made up of energy.
20:23In life, people are good people and there are bad people.
20:27So in spirit, I truly believe that there are good spirit and there are bad spirit and there
20:36are spirit that are never human at all.
20:53Far from the thundering waters of Niagara Falls sits an austere assisted living facility
20:58where Sarah Gillespie arrives for her very first shift.
21:03I am a housekeeper and dietary aid.
21:09I work in a retirement home.
21:15You must be Sarah.
21:16Yes, that's me.
21:17Why don't you drop your things off and we'll show you around.
21:20Sure thing.
21:25The first time I walked into the building, you just get a variable of emotions there,
21:29you know.
21:30You feel what the residents are feeling.
21:33You feel what the employees are feeling.
21:36And the building itself, some places it just, it feels off.
21:44Sarah, come in.
22:00Sarah quickly settles into the routine of her new job, but can't shake the feeling that
22:05something isn't quite right.
22:08Do you think in a retirement home wouldn't be that scary, but that place is, it's not
22:17a good place.
22:19It doesn't have good vibes.
22:22It's got bad energy.
22:24There's people passing away.
22:26It's just not a good place.
22:35It's my first shift in the dining room, and it just felt really dark, depressing, and
22:44maybe a bit sad.
22:50You could feel a really dark, gloomy presence there.
22:53I had the feeling that definitely something strange was going on.
22:57Is everything okay?
23:01Yeah.
23:02Hey.
23:04Hey, can I ask you something?
23:11Did something happen here?
23:15What do you mean?
23:18Something, you know, bad?
23:29As a matter of fact, a resident died here.
23:34How did she?
23:35She choked.
23:36Where?
23:37Right here, right where you're sitting.
23:47When you're finished up here, can you start the laundry in the basement, please?
24:08Sure.
24:09When I saw the shadow, it felt dark.
24:10I didn't have a very friendly feeling to it at all.
24:25Alarmed by her experience in the dining room, Sarah welcomes a new set of duties in another
24:31part of the facility.
24:33I go down to the basement.
24:35That is where the housekeeping is.
24:49To move the laundry to the basement, I need to take the elevator.
24:56That basement, it's not very well lit.
25:01It has kind of a creepy feeling to it overall.
25:11So I go to the table.
25:12I start folding the resident laundry.
25:24And I could hear footsteps, and they're loud.
25:29Hello?
25:30Somebody there?
25:33Hello?
25:37And they sounded like they were kind of in a hurry.
25:40Hey, is everything okay?
25:47I thought perhaps it could be one of my coworkers.
26:01And there was nobody there.
26:12I'm hearing things, but I'm not seeing anybody.
26:15So I was kind of creeped out about that.
26:17But I had to continue doing my job, you know?
26:21You can't just run away.
26:22So you just stay there.
26:37A couple nights later, I was back in the laundry room, folding laundry.
26:44I saw a movement at the corner of my eye, and I looked over to see what it was.
26:57Sir?
26:58And I saw a person standing there, and I did not recognize him.
27:04No!
27:05No!
27:06Sir?
27:07No!
27:08Can I help you?
27:09No!
27:10No!
27:11He seemed scared.
27:12No!
27:13And that made me scared.
27:17What's there?
27:18What is he looking at?
27:19I don't know why he appeared to me, but I'm thinking he wanted to let me know that something
27:25was coming.
27:27It felt like something really bad was definitely on its way down that hallway.
27:38That darkness definitely does not have good intentions.
27:41No.
27:44I felt really trapped in that room.
27:45I didn't want to leave, because I didn't want to see what was there.
27:49And at the corner of my eye, I see what looked like a figure, and it was only like five steps
27:54away from me.
27:58My heart was beating.
27:59It was very creepy, because I was in this room by myself.
28:04It let me know that it was there.
28:06It was definitely wanting my attention.
28:13What the hell was that?
28:15No!
28:18What on earth did I just see?
28:20What was that?
28:22In the short time that Sarah's been working at this facility, there's been a lot of death
28:26and a lot of trauma.
28:27And in situations like this, what can happen is that a paranormal entity can be manifested
28:32from that and cause a lot of negativity and trouble.
28:36Sarah sees shadow figures and then a full-blown apparition, which is pretty surprising.
28:42This entire place seems to be a plethora of events and activity that's going on.
28:47It may not be necessarily connected, but it is definitely connected to the location itself.
29:00I wanted to tell somebody what I was seeing and witnessing in the basement, but I didn't.
29:05You have a job to do, and you have to get it done, and you have to pay the rent.
29:10You just have to put up with it.
29:16I think I rationalized it.
29:19So far, it really hasn't hurt me.
29:21You know what I mean?
29:22I'm just seeing things, but so far, it hasn't hurt me.
29:25I just get creeped out.
29:40So I go into the elevator with my cleaning supplies and toilet paper,
29:43and before I have a chance to press the button to where I want to go,
29:49it starts climbing up.
29:59And then I realize it's going to the fourth floor.
30:10When those doors slid open, there was absolutely nobody there.
30:22There was nobody in the hallway.
30:23There was nobody starting to open up the door.
30:26To come out of the rooms, there was nothing.
30:30There was no way that one of the residents could have done that,
30:33because it's all rooms.
30:35None of the room doors were open.
30:37There was nobody in the hallway.
30:38They're in walkers.
30:39They're in wheelchairs.
30:41There's nowhere to hide.
30:42There's absolutely none.
30:43So it was creepy.
30:47The unusual problem with the elevator continues throughout the evening.
30:51Before you had a chance to press that button,
30:53you had to go to the fourth floor,
30:55it would just go right up to the fourth floor.
30:58And it did that about three times that day.
31:04Something was pressing that button because it was lit.
31:08It occurred to me that whatever was playing with that elevator
31:11was a dark entity that's been in the building.
31:15And this is basically, it feels like this is a ghost house.
31:18It feels like a ghost house.
31:20A dark entity that's been in the building.
31:24And this is basically, it feels like this is its playground.
31:28The thing that really freaked me out the most
31:30is that at the end of the day, I'm exhausted.
31:37And I go into the elevator,
31:39I'm about ready to go downstairs to the basement.
31:41I just want to go home.
31:51No, no, no, no, no, no.
31:55And I said, no, I'm exhausted.
31:58I am tired and I just want to go home.
32:02I am not going up to the fourth floor.
32:06Come on.
32:09And like a defiant child, it went up to the fourth floor.
32:14That was my breaking point.
32:17I could feel something was going to happen.
32:29I'm freaking out.
32:31And I'm trying to press this button to close the door.
32:33Nothing was happening.
32:38So I tried to press the buttons, like I had to press.
32:42That door was stuck open.
32:44That door was stuck open.
32:48I was freaked out.
32:50My heart was beating so fast that I thought it was going to explode.
33:05Yeah, I was very afraid.
33:10I thought, I want to get out of there, I want to get my things.
33:12They're in the basement office.
33:14And I want to leave, I want to go home.
33:18And I didn't use that elevator to go home, I went up the stairs.
33:28If I had to give advice to somebody in the same situation,
33:30you have to have boundaries.
33:32You know, you have to be firm.
33:34You have to let it know that, no, you cannot cross this line.
33:37This is my line, this is my personal bubble, and you're not crossing it.
33:42I want you to leave me alone!
33:49I've always been sensitive to paranormal activity, I can't explain why.
33:56But I've never had that much happen in one place before,
34:00and that many variety of things, never.
34:04I would just like to know more about it.
34:06Definitely.
34:12I would like to know more about it.
34:23Night falls in a quiet corner of Alabama.
34:29But not everyone is asleep.
34:33Newly hired nurse, Kemi Ellis, is preparing a medicine cart for her nightly rounds.
34:40At the time, I was a charge nurse on a rehabilitation floor at a skilled nursing facility.
34:48I had worked there probably about two months, maybe three months.
34:53I was pretty new to the facility and did not know much of the history behind it.
34:59So the facility itself had a sadness and heavy feeling to it.
35:05Usually everyone leaves around 9 p.m. and the main doors lock so that the patients can get their rest.
35:14That evening I was walking with my medication cart down the hallway, delivering the patient's medication.
35:24Here you are, Mr. Davidson.
35:26Thank you, Kemi.
35:28How are you feeling this evening?
35:30Good as always.
35:31That's great. You have a great evening, Mr. Davidson.
35:34All right, you too. Thank you.
35:36So I went back to the desk and all of a sudden I heard
35:45multiple children laughing down the hallway.
35:50I was very surprised because I didn't know what was going on.
35:55I was very surprised because it was about 9.30 at night
35:59and there should not have been anyone besides the patients and the staff in the building.
36:05So I looked over and I noticed there was a small boy that was chasing a ball.
36:13He was in tattered overalls. They looked old and dirty.
36:18He did have dark circles under his eyes, almost like he was either really tired or sick.
36:24He looked at me and ran into a patient's room.
36:29I thought, man, this is strange because I didn't hear any footsteps
36:34or hear any movement at all besides the laughing.
36:38I wanted to know what he was doing there and see if I could find maybe his parents
36:42or someone that he was there with.
36:45So I immediately went down to the room that I saw the little boy run into.
36:52When I went into the patient's room, I wasn't sure what I was going to find in there.
36:59But there was no one in the room except for the patient.
37:02I got really cold and just all over had chills
37:07and I was wondering what in the world just happened.
37:14I didn't know what to do next.
37:17Mrs. Connor?
37:22Get out!
37:24Mrs. Connor, it's me. It's okay. It's Kimmy.
37:27It's that little boy. He keeps scaring me.
37:30And I said, well, do you know the little boy? And she said, no.
37:34And I said, well, do you recognize him at all?
37:36I don't know who he is. I don't know who he belongs to. He's bouncing a ball and giggling.
37:45Do you mind if I look around a little?
37:47Please.
37:49I immediately started looking for this little boy because I had not seen him exit this room.
37:55I looked in the wardrobe closet. I looked in the bathroom.
37:59I looked under the bed.
38:03There was nobody there.
38:06When I could not find the little boy in the room, I was in shock.
38:12I was like, I know this little boy did not come out of this room.
38:16It sent chills down my spine.
38:21I was definitely on guard. It made me a little uneasy.
38:26I knew something definitely was different about the situation.
38:35I went and immediately checked all the rooms, made sure there was nobody else there.
38:40Immediately checked all the rooms, made sure there was nobody else there.
38:44And I went down to the main entranceway door.
38:52And it stays locked at nine.
38:54And when I went down there, the door was locked.
39:02Oh my God, Rose, you scared me.
39:04You look scared already. Did something happen?
39:06It's been a long night.
39:08I was like, well, did I just see an apparition?
39:12What did I just see? What experience did I really just have?
39:20And I asked her, I said, have you seen any visitors here today?
39:23And she said, I haven't seen any this evening.
39:26But I did see some earlier this afternoon.
39:29At this point, I was like, there's got to be an explanation for this.
39:34There's a small child here, unattended, running down the hallway.
39:39And, you know, where's he coming from?
39:43And where are his parents?
39:52Hey, you look beat.
39:54You should head home. I don't mind covering until Sam gets here.
39:57Thank you, Rose.
39:59No problem.
40:02What did I just experience?
40:05There is no explanation.
40:12The ward is quiet for several days.
40:15But one evening, a patient tells Kemi something startling.
40:19I had a male patient tell me that he had seen a child in his room.
40:24And it was about three o'clock in the morning.
40:26So I knew that there was no children in the facility at that time.
40:31I think I saw a little boy.
40:33A little boy?
40:35I asked him to describe what the child looked like.
40:38Blonde hair.
40:44His clothes were just old and filthy and tattered.
40:47But it was his eyes.
40:52So weird, I can't even explain it.
40:57I was like, wow, this sounds just like the same child that I saw.
41:03And it really gave me validation on the things that I saw a few nights before.
41:10I'm going to keep an eye out, okay?
41:12All right.
41:13You try and get some sleep.
41:15I thought, well, there has to be more to this story.
41:18And something here is haunting the halls.
41:23And so I started asking some of the other staff members more about the history of the facility.
41:30There is something really weird about this place.
41:33Well, you do know what used to be here, right?
41:36This used to be the pediatric unit.
41:39When my co-worker told me that, I was in shock.
41:42Yeah.
41:43Come, follow me. Let me show you.
41:45Okay.
41:53See? This is it.
41:56Oh, my God.
41:59Wallpaper.
42:00When I saw the wallpaper, I just could not believe what I was seeing.
42:05It was just the type of wallpaper that you would see on a pediatric floor or in a child's room.
42:23Kimmy, are you okay?
42:26Yeah, I thought I saw something.
42:30Okay, let's get out of here.
42:45There's two things that could be going on with this particular haunting.
42:48It could be a situation of residual energy, which is like an imprint or a memory embedded into the environment.
42:55Or it could be an intelligent haunting where a spirit is actually coming back in visitation
43:01because they enjoyed being there and they had good memories while they were staying.
43:07I really don't know why I got to see the child and why certain patients got to see this child.
43:14I don't know why he only presented himself to certain people.
43:20Get out!
43:21Places of life and death definitely bring that out.
43:26There are things that we cannot explain that happen.
