Demand for air transport is expected to increase by an average of 4.3 per cent annually over the next 20 years due to a rebound in the airline industry, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said this would create 15.5 million direct job opportunities and contribute US$1.5tril to the global gross domestic product by 2036.

00:44As of 2024, we have witnessed a remarkable rebound in the airline industry, with many
00:51regions surpassing pre-pandemic air traffic levels.
00:54Connectivity to Asia-Pacific regions, for example, is expected to be fully restored

01:02We are anticipated to see a year-on-year increase of 10.4% in total passenger numbers globally
01:10for this year.
01:11Here in Malaysia, we have seen similar growth.
01:15Our aviation sector is set to experience a 4% growth in overall passenger movement.
01:21Driven by freight expansion and the return of foreign airlines.
01:27In August, we recorded 8.7 million passengers, marking a robust 12.7% increase from the
01:35previous year.
01:37The Asia-Pacific region will remain ICAO's fastest-growing air transport region through
01:422035.
01:45In terms of air cargo, we expect a 6% to 6.6% year-on-year growth for 2024, amounting to
01:53roughly 20 billion freight-ton kilometres.
01:57This growth is driven by factors such as the recovery in China, an upturn in the global
02:02technology cycle, and economic stabilisation.
02:07Malaysia's aviation sector is not only recovering, but also preparing for the future.
