00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel, in this video, I will explain the ending of The Masked Scammer,
00:05so let's begin now.
00:07The Masked Scammer is a 2022 crime documentary film directed by Ivan Yagi and Dominic Sivir,
00:12spoilers for the film's ending follow.
00:15The Masked Scammer is the true story of a bluff master named Gilbert Chickley, aka The
00:20The Scam King.
00:21What he did was beyond anyone's imagination.
00:24The Scammer is a big narcissist who only shows remorse when he wants to manipulate people
00:29into thinking he is innocent.
00:30So, who is Gilbert the conman and what did he do?
00:34The documentary starts by explaining how much money he has extorted from innocent people.
00:40Gilbert was born in Belleville to a poor family.
00:43He said they did not have enough money to live the lifestyle he desired, so he started
00:47scamming people at a very young age.
00:49His father would chain him in order to stop him from fooling people.
00:53However, he would still come home with money.
00:56According to his ex-wife, Shirley Chickley, he did everything for his mother.
01:01His mother was a huge supporter of his wrongdoings, too, she would tell him that he would find
01:05various people in the gambling business who would believe him since he was so convincing.
01:10And we do see a very convincing actor in him, he does everything with passion and even calls
01:14it art.
01:15We also see him saying that there is only room for people who are smart in this world,
01:19which is seen to be true nowadays.
01:21We see so many scammers successfully extorting money by taking advantage of gullible people
01:25and their fear.
01:27This is what Gilbert Chickley did.
01:29He was indeed a moneymaker.
01:32Back in 2005, he met with a young girl called Shirley, not his ex-wife, and during that
01:36time, there were attacks going on in London.
01:40Shirley used to work for a company that did advertising, particularly false advertising.
01:45She came up with a plan during the time she was dating Gilbert.
01:48It was also the time when he was in huge debt because of his gambling addiction.
01:53Shirley asked him to pretend to be an agent during the time of terrorism.
01:57Together, they would find vulnerable people and extort money from them.
02:01They would basically have smooth talk over the phone, and with the skills that Gilbert
02:05had, innocent people fell into their scam trap.
02:08According to his ex-girlfriend, he was very intelligent.
02:11Even according to the police in France, whatever he did was a wonderful and talented scam.
02:17He would masquerade as different CEOs of companies, and by 2009, he built a team that successfully
02:22scammed people and earned 60 million euros.
02:26When the police were almost there to catch him, he fled to Israel, leaving his ex-girlfriend
02:30behind.
02:31She was sentenced to two years in jail and served her time.
02:35In the documentary, we hear her entire side, and she calls herself a victim instead of
02:39an accomplice.
02:41What happened in Israel?
02:43It was a game of cat and mouse for the police as Gilbert Chickley kept running away from
02:47them.
02:48Gilbert also called himself the master of this huge game that he was constructing.
02:53He had an entire team built just to scam people over phone calls.
02:57In Israel, he met another girl who goes by the name of Shirley.
03:00Shirley ended up marrying Gilbert Chickley, and even in the documentary, she can be seen
03:04to be very much in love with him.
03:07She explains her hardships but says he gave her the life she desired.
03:11She said he always found time for family and that she did not care about the scam he was
03:15running.
03:16In Israel, he lived as a refugee but lived like a king.
03:20Gilbert even had luxurious cars.
03:22He gained a lot of money by fooling elites over just a phone call, he was that convincing
03:26of a con man.
03:28According to his ex-wife, he is no less than Robin Hood because he only is stole from rich
03:32people like Aga Khan, who is a billionaire.
03:35However, his thirst for money did not end there.
03:38He went on to plan a bigger scam and target ministers.
03:42According to the documentary, he called around 180 organizations and fooled some of the people
03:47working there.
03:48Some even lost their jobs because of it and one of them shared that he had to take therapy
03:52because of the loss he faced.
03:55He would play around with people's emotions and patriotism.
03:58In one instance, he even fooled some people into thinking he wanted to send money to free
04:02prisoners of war.
04:04The biggest scam that he pulled was trying to impersonate a minister.
04:08His name is Jean-Yves Le Drian and he was the French minister of defense at that time.
04:13Gilbert would mask up as him and talk to people over a Skype call and convince them to give
04:17him money for the country.
04:19He persuaded victims to give him over 80 million euros for this.
04:23Wondering how he was able to just a mask up?
04:26Well, he used a silicone mask.
04:29According to the documentary, he was planning to impersonate more ministers, however, he
04:33was caught by the police.
04:35How did the police catch him?
04:37Well, he tried scamming a financial director named Sophie Granier.
04:42He pretended to be the defense minister and got on a Skype call with her.
04:46He said that he needed some money from her and that it was an official case and she would
04:49be reimbursed for it.
04:51However, she found the whole thing a facade.
04:54She went to the police, who tapped her phone, and together they tried to play him.
04:59When he gave his account details, the police found the evidence they needed to convict
05:03him.
05:04When they went to his place in Israel to arrest him, he had already flown to Ukraine.
05:09He said that he was going on a pilgrimage.
05:11But the police caught him there.
05:14He was kept in Ukraine for three months, and his ex-wife even bought him a fridge there.
05:18He was living very comfortably and proudly in jail there.
05:22Finally, after three months, he was taken back to Paris.
05:26There, he argued that the evidence and all the phone recordings the police had were not
05:30of him.
05:31Gilbert also argued that the man behind the silicone mask was not him.
05:35Nevertheless, he was found guilty.
05:38In the documentary, officials and journalists talk about his boldness.
05:43To commit such a crime with the confidence that he had was not a small deal.
05:47One of the officials also said if he weren't caught in Ukraine, he would have continued
05:51scamming people and the world would have seen a new wave of his wrath.
05:55In 2019, during his trials, he tried very hard to convince people that he was innocent
06:00and only scammed rich people for the benefit of the poor.
06:04He left a lot of scars on his victims, though.
06:07He not only scammed the rich but also not-so-wealthy people in society, so his argument was redundant.
06:13However, according to Gilbert, he never loses, he either wins or he learns.
06:18He is not at all apologetic and shows zero remorse.
06:22He is now sentenced to 11 years in prison and also fined 2 million euros for identity
06:26theft.
06:27Shirley Chickley filed for divorce and since then, he has started dating another woman.
06:32Also, in the last minutes of the documentary, the audience is informed of how he and his
06:37team contacted the entire French administration and that this scam would have put the policies
06:42of France at risk.
06:44In the worst-case scenario, Gilbert could also have had blood on his hands since he
06:47was losing control over his greed for money.
06:50Now his ex-wife is traveling around the world as a DJ and has moved on, however, she says
06:55his children still ask for their dad.
06:58The documentary is well-made, and the stories that we hear are truly shocking.
07:02That's all for now folks.
