MARKED Wayfinding System is a cycle navigation system that aims to nudge more people to start cycling.
Uniquely combining digital route planning with physical colour-coded wayfinding, MARKED makes it easy to see where the city's safe cycle network is.

00:00Most of us used to cycle when we were kids. I know I did. Yet today in the UK, 66% of
00:15adults think it's too dangerous to cycle on the road, 90% of women fear urban cycling
00:21and only 2% of journeys are done by bike. There is a disconnect between people knowing
00:26how to ride a bike and people feeling comfortable using it as a form of transport. My name is
00:32Garence and with my team we are solving this problem with the Marked Wayfinding System.
00:37I'm Alistair Dalton, the Scotsman's Transport Correspondent. When I cycle, I don't like
00:42to be riding beside busy traffic on heavily congested roads. It's great to find off-road
00:48paths and cut-throughs like this in the city centre of Glasgow. But they're virtually invisible,
00:54they're not on many maps and unless you know they're here, you have no idea to use them.
01:00One of the few maps available produced by Spokes, the Edinburgh Cycling Campaign for
01:04Glasgow is great but it's out of print and it's not being updated. But a new Strathclyde
01:14University company, Orky, is developing a wayfinding system that will direct riders
01:22onto the safest and most pleasant routes rather than the most direct routes that you
01:27would find on apps like Google Maps. The Marked Wayfinding System has just won £45,000 from
01:35the UK Government's Department for Transport to develop a network of safe routes and that
01:44will be combined with coloured signs on lampposts and other markers to guide riders through
01:52the directions. A bike navigation that helps riders find the city's safe cycling network.
01:57It uniquely combines digital navigation with on-street, colour-coded wayfinding. The network
02:04is represented in a subway-style design, making it easy to process. And then as you zoom in,
02:09it becomes more practical. With your help, we could create cities with no barriers to cycling.
