Jim and Jon discuss whether Michigan Head Coach Sherrone Moore can turn the program around in the next couple of years.
Transcript
00:00The question then is, did it restore any faith that Sharone Moore will get it right?
00:07It's not right this year. It's not going to get right this year.
00:11He's going to have to hit the transfer portal. He's going to have to own the transfer portal for O-line.
00:17Really for a lot of different parts of the team because the talent that he does have this year,
00:23a lot of it will be in the draft and won't be back next year.
00:28So you're not going to have a Will Johnson, I would assume.
00:32You're not going to have a Mason Graham or a Kenneth Grant or a Colston Loveland.
00:35Now the tight end position is pretty stacked. Hogan Hanson is pretty good.
00:39They've got a lot of talent there, but you're going to have to find talent at almost every position in the transfer portal.
00:46Sharone Moore is a good recruiter coming out of high school.
00:51Do you believe he'll be a guy that will be good in the transfer portal?
00:55Because at no point in college football history are you able to change the trajectory of a program quicker than you can now.
01:04Yeah, I thought it was encouraging that the quarterbacks seem to be set up for success.
01:08I mean, they are what they are, right?
01:11When I saw it was Davis Warren, I go, oh boy.
01:14And I think you knew even before I did, but I'm going, oh boy.
01:17And they had him with safe completions early. Now he missed some stuff.
01:21He is still Davis Warren, but he didn't turn the ball over, which is a huge win for him.
01:24And he had a couple nice throws when he needed to.
01:27And the misses were more in the second half. He missed the first pass of the game, but then he completed 10 in a row.
01:32And it wasn't until like completion 6 or 7 where it was actually past the line.
01:36Yeah, I know. But it felt like they knew what they were working with.
01:40They were going to make the most of what they were working with.
01:43And I think it's incumbent on them this offseason to be working with more next season.
01:47And there's an advantage. This is such a silver lining.
01:51Because they're bad, they're going to get to go at the front of the buffet line.
01:55To the portal? Yeah, they're going to go to the portal and they're going to say, I want some lobster.
01:59I want some steak. I'm going to come up for seconds and thirds, as opposed to last year when they could have done a better job.
02:04But the buffet line had already been picked through a little bit.
02:07It's going to have to be an aggressive offseason for them. It may mean coaching staff changes.
02:11I have not been overly impressed with Kurt Campbell, Wink Martindale.
02:14I don't know if he's a college coach long term, and certainly his defense is disappointed this season.
02:19Does Sharon make a tough call on one or both coordinators?
02:22Does he bring in a quarterback and a coordinator combo meal?
02:26We see more of that in college football. I'm not giving you anything specific.
02:29But I am curious to see how he reflects on this year afterwards and can try to make more wholesale changes in the moment.
02:37They got to win the Northwestern game to get to a bowl game.
02:40I don't expect them to beat Oregon or Ohio State or even Indiana.
02:43How they look in those games. Yeah, that will matter for perception.
02:47There's no moral victory, but perception for the program.
02:50You can't lose by 35 to Ohio State. You can't lose by 28 to Oregon this week.
02:55So here's what you need to see in the Oregon game.
02:58It needs to look better playing against Oregon than you looked against Texas.
03:03So that there is a way to show, OK, it feels like you are improving as a program.
03:09There is actual development. There's actual coaching going on.
03:14Take the line aside. I don't even know what it is right now.
03:18No one is going to pick Michigan to win outright against Oregon coming to town.
03:22I'm probably not picking either.
03:25But how do they look compared to how they looked against Texas when they play Ohio State at the end?
03:31I know it's a rivalry and all that stuff, but how do they play in that game on the road in Columbus
03:38versus how they played at home against Texas and Oregon?
03:42Some ticket text. 248-539-9797.
03:45This win restores zero of my faith in the Michigan coaching staff.
03:49Wink Martindale and Jerome Moore both need to be fired.
03:52It says, unfortunately, won't happen until the NCAA crap is over.
03:55Michigan will continue to be terrible for the next couple of years.
03:58Drew in Woodhaven.
04:00Well, if you don't believe he's going to do anything in the portal, then yeah, that would be the assumption.
04:07We saw Ohio State hit the portal heavy to try to get back into the title picture.
04:12I think Michigan will have to be unafraid.
04:15John, I don't know the financials. I don't know if they're going to throw $20 million.
04:18The point is it's going to have to be an aggressive offseason for Michigan because this is not acceptable.
04:21This is nowhere close to acceptable.
04:23Six, seven wins is three, four wins from acceptable.
04:26Here's the difference between Michigan hitting the portal and Ohio State.
04:29Ohio State hit the portal hard because Alabama was seeing a coaching change.
04:35They picked up a number of different players from really good programs that were seeing a little bit of a turnover.
04:40But they were adding to a really good base of talent.
04:44Michigan is going to have to have a lot of wholesale change.
04:48TicketTexture says, Spartan here. Big fan of Jonathan Smith.
04:51I do think he understands the rivalry we lost because of poor execution.
04:54However, I can't help but wonder if Cignetti would have been the better hire.
05:01I think both Michigan and Michigan State could ask that question.
05:03He's done such a remarkable job at Indiana of all places.
05:06Before I jump all over, I think Cignetti has done a really, really nice job in Bloomington.
05:13I need to see a full season and maybe even a second season because he did the same thing.
05:18He hit the transfer portal hard.
05:20Brought a lot of his JMU guys.
05:22I want to see what he looks like against Ohio State.
05:27Play the big boys.
05:30They're still off to their best start in 50, 60 years.
05:33It's crazy.
05:35If they only won another game this season, it would still be one of the greatest seasons in Indiana football history.
05:40I think they're going to win a couple games, still get the 10 wins and be in that conversation.
05:43To be a playoff team.
05:45Those 10 wins get them in.
05:46It's a big 10 team with only two losses.
05:48I think they'll be favored in all but one game the rest of the way.
05:50That's 11-1.
05:51I think they got a shot against Ohio State.
05:53As silly as that sounds, I do.
05:55I don't think very highly of this Buckeye team.
05:57I do think highly of Indiana.
05:59They'll have a puncher's chance in that game.
06:01I need to see it to believe.
06:03That's one I've got to see to believe.
06:05TicketTexters, 2485399797 with some of their thoughts.
06:09This one says,
06:11Jonathan Smith literally said he now understands how big the rivalry is,
06:14which means he didn't fully know what to expect.
06:17Says, I'd still take Jonathan Smith over coach Moore any day.
06:20Go green.
06:21TicketTexter says,
06:22Smith actually understood the rivalry too much.
06:25He knew he had to come in and run the football
06:27and win the battle of the line of scrimmage, and they did.
06:29The problem is they didn't do the other stuff.
06:31They didn't make enough plays in their passing game.
06:33They gave up too many plays in the passing game on play action.
06:36Yeah, it's an interesting read that he was too dialed in.
06:39People probably told him,
06:40if you win the rushing battle, you're winning the football game.
06:42And he's looking around going,
06:43what gives, guys?
06:44I won the rushing battle.
06:45You guys told me that's all I had to do.
06:47With the way that they came out, though,
06:49and dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball,
06:53I find it very hard to believe that he didn't have his team ready.
06:56Now, you could say error in game plan.
06:58They didn't throw the ball enough against Michigan Secondary,
07:00minus Will Johnson.
07:01Even if Will Johnson was there,
07:02they have really struggled against the pass.
07:05And I just,
07:07he's not the quarterback.
07:09The quarterback ultimately fumbled the ball.
07:11One time,
07:12I thought Ian Childs played a good game,
07:14but he made a mistake in that moment.
07:17And he's also not the kicker.
07:19And no, Kim is a good kicker.
