Jim and Jon discuss whether Brad Holmes should stay the course and continue finding solid players in the draft or start trading picks for top-notch free agents.
Transcript
00:00You guys may not have heard any of what Brad had to say yesterday, but I think that clip he's talking about
00:06F them picks and the mentality they want to draft
00:08They'll trade a pick here or there for a player that makes sense
00:11But they are not in F them picks mode and he even kind of bristled at the window talk to like we don't believe in
00:18Windows the walls aren't closing in
00:20Certainly doesn't feel like they need to
00:23Get uber aggressive. He said stay the course a bunch yesterday John
00:27Yeah, and I mean he also used the term it's why we are where we are well
00:31I mean that that that cuts both ways
00:33We just lost in the divisional round and maybe we're there because we don't have that one player
00:40I don't necessarily think that's the reason now, but I'd also think
00:45Yes, you could continue to build for the draft
00:47And I'm not a proponent of a two first round picks for this guy and and you know
00:53Unless like he said it's the right fit and it's gonna help the team win I
01:00Don't know that that guy's out there, and I know everybody's probably right now thinking of Max Crosby
01:04maybe that is
01:07The only one that would make it plausible
01:11But then you start thinking about salary cap you thought I started thinking about guys that you might not be able to keep down
01:15The road who would you be willing to cut later to have Max Crosby opposite Aiden Hutchinson?
01:21And I think that list probably grows quite a bit
01:23Because everybody would would would drool over the possibility of seeing those two guys on the field for a long time here in Detroit
01:30So where are you guys at stay the course or F them picks two four eight five three nine ninety seven ninety seven and we'll play
01:36More Brad Holmes here in the next half hour, so you get better idea of just where he's at
01:40But for you guys is it stay the course
01:42Or would you like to see them be a little more urgent in trying to capture a Super Bowl while the irons hot I?
01:48Think this is right now in the offseason
01:53it's a stay the course for me and
01:56Because I think Brad Holmes. What do we know about him in his track record, and it grows every year
02:02He's been pretty good at draft picks not everything is hit
02:06But a high percentage for him higher than most general managers have hit and this to me is a year where?
02:13you're going to need a
02:15Lot of picks because you've got to you've got a
02:19water the garden and
02:21Fertilize it a little bit
02:23Offensive line and depth on the defensive line
02:26We've seen this year depth of the defensive line is is huge
02:30And I don't know I can't nobody can predict injuries all you know is that they're going to happen
02:34Maybe not at the same rate or on this you know it in on one side of the ball as they did this past year
02:42But you can never have too many offensive linemen you can never have too many defensive linemen
02:47I think that was that was made abundantly clear to us this year and
02:51with an aging o-line like
02:55How long does it take Frank to recover from this year with the torn pack the foot the toe that says he feels great?
03:03terrific and
03:04But as guys get older, and we heard Brad talk about Kevin Zeitler guys of a certain age
03:10You know it it really becomes a part of the equation
03:14Can you make it through a 17 game season enough to where we can count on you?
03:19And if they're looking at Zeitler going well
03:22Do we want it do we want to re-up them and bring them back?
03:25And and I'm just using him as again because you can put Taylor Decker in there Frank
03:29You can put Glasgow in there are we good with?
03:3313 of the 17 games
03:35That's about what you got out of Decker this year mm-hmm. Are we good with that?
03:40And do we have the talent to step in there in those four games where?
03:45One of those older offensive linemen aren't gonna be so it's a long way to get to I'm good with right now
03:53Not of a building through the draft
03:56Now when you get into the season, I think you open up the opportunity at the trade deadline
04:02to say F them picks
04:05Yeah, I know he's done such a good job back-to-back executive of the year Brad Holmes
04:10We got a really good one here in Detroit
04:12Far be it for anyone to question the way he has built or plans to keep building this football team, right?
04:19He's done it unorthodox. He drafted a running back in the first round
04:22He took a an off-ball linebacker in the first round, but he has kept his offensive line going
04:27He's found all pros late in the draft st. Brown and Kirby Joseph
04:31You certainly want him to have draft capital
04:34But I'd be lying if I said I didn't want them to show more urgency given the fact that they had squandered two different real
04:40Chances to win the Super Bowl because he's such a good drafter. I
04:45am comfortable giving up a first-round pick or
04:48Potentially two first-round picks because I know I can find Kirby Joseph in the third or I'm on Ross st
04:53Brown in the fourth Max Crosby was essentially begging to get out of
04:57Vegas with the comments about how much he appreciates what Detroit's doing right now
05:02We know Brad Holmes called about Max Crosby last November per Dave Burkett. That's not just some blogger
05:08That's Dave Burkett has trusted a beat writer as there is saying no they called about Max Crosby
05:13So I don't think I'm asking for anything Brad Holmes hasn't already been interested in doing well
05:17And Brad basically said that yesterday without talking about names as you get to the trade deadline
05:23And he said that was the most challenging
05:25You know moment for him as a GM because yeah, you're gonna call on all these guys and then all of a sudden you figure out
05:31They're not all available and and and it starts to really
05:35Pair down on those that might be available, and he obviously ended up landings a Darius Smith
05:40But when you start removing guys like Trey Hendrickson Max Crosby all the guys that we had talked about at that time
05:46If if they're not even on the market
05:48And there's nothing that you could send Cincinnati or Vegas at that time to get those guys now you're looking at two or three
05:56individuals
05:57One of them had you know starting
06:01caliber of play
06:03But you're not the only ones in the market at that time which I think kind of makes it more remarkable that he was able
06:08To send what he wanted to Cleveland to get said areas so Crosby's contract. I believe is up after 26
06:1626 is when the cap bill starts to really come due in Detroit. It's when golf's deal really balloons
06:20It's when Sewell and st. Brown are really gonna be deals to navigate around and you can and Brad will
06:26It's gonna be hard to keep everybody beyond
06:292026 you start throwing in Hutchinson and Joseph and branch and LaPorta and no one asked about JMO yesterday
06:34Maybe he's not here. I don't know my point is if you like all these guys you want to keep all these guys
06:38It may not be possible. So is it worth trying to win while you have them all in the next two seasons and
06:44And I know that is a little more f-than-picks, and that's not stay the course
06:47But isn't that the best way to try to win a Super Bowl while I have?
06:51Joseph branch LaPorta JMO Hutch on top of the guys
06:54They already paid on top of a short window with Max Crosby might be he's not gonna be here long term
06:58But you bring him in for two years to chase a Super Bowl for a team
07:01He grew up rooting for it makes a lot of sense to me and because we know Brad Holmes has called on it
07:06I don't think I'm just spewing this morning. I don't think I'm just trying to force something
07:10I want I think it's it's at least a consideration for Brad Holmes
07:14And it would pull him away from the current course and it would push him more towards f-them picks
