00:00Is MCA President Wee Ka Siong trying to revive his political career by opposing the proposed
00:07EPF plans for foreign workers?
00:10This is a question posed by DAP's Charles Santiago, who has also branded Wee's call
00:15for the government to abandon its new plans as populist.
00:18Yesterday, Wee expressed concern that the move would raise labor costs and possibly
00:23increase inflation.
00:25He also argued that it could see foreigners enjoy EPF's yearly dividends.
00:31In response, the former Klang MP said pension schemes offer invaluable social protection
00:37to the millions of migrant workers in the country.
00:40Santiago accused Wee of not wanting foreign workers to be treated fairly or enjoy the
00:45same incentives as Malaysians.
00:48He said allowing EPF deductions is a move towards honoring the country's pledge of
00:52ratifying key human rights instruments when it vied for a seat on the UN Human Rights
00:57Council for 2022-2024.
