Film Brain reviews a wacky, raunchy bowling comedy in the tradition of Kingpin and Dodgeball, but despite Shameik Moore and Susan Sarandon being game, it scores less than a 7-10 split for laughs.

00:00Shameik Moore proves he's got the balls in the bowling comedy The Gutter,
00:04directed by Isaiah and Yusur Lester, writers for TV shows like Black-ish and Girls.
00:09Moore discovers that he has a talent for bowling and goes pro to try and save the alley that he
00:13works at from being closed with the aid of alcoholic former champ Darcy Carden,
00:18but when he threatens the records of Susan Sarandon, she comes out of retirement to stand in his way.
00:24The Gutter is clearly inspired by Kingpin and Sarandon's performance is definitely
00:28challenging Bill Murray in that movie, and she steals so much of this given the
00:33rare opportunity to comedically cut loose. There's also a fair bit of dodgeball in there
00:37as Paul Reiser plays a commentator analysing the Super League of Bowlers, or SLOB for short.
00:44It's refreshing to see an old-fashioned out-and-out comedy these days, but I wish
00:48The Gutter was better executed. But while it does score some strikes,
00:52Moore has a nickname that I literally cannot say in this video, far too much of the jokes end up,
00:58well, in The Gutter.
