Boomer Esiason joins the show! What does he think of Drake Maye? What are Maye's strengths?
Transcript
00:00Hey, good morning, man.
00:02So here's the good news.
00:03You want silver lining stuff or you want like, you know, you want the black hole silver lining
00:09is fine.
00:10All right.
00:11Well, I always like to focus on the positive and Drake may was pretty damn good yesterday,
00:15man.
00:16Yeah.
00:17No, may Drake may give us and then he take it away.
00:19But you know, he got you in overtime and the life of a rookie man.
00:24I'm telling you, Greg, he he has all the makings of somebody who's gonna be really good.
00:28I mean, you could see it and, you know, he's got the ability to run and that that should
00:33be curtailed as the season goes on, hopefully.
00:35And then as he goes into his second, third and fourth season, we'll see less and less
00:39than that, because right now he's still relying on his athleticism, which is fine.
00:44That's what most young quarterbacks do.
00:46Even Jaden Daniels doing some of that still down in Washington.
00:49But I have to say, he looks good.
00:52He looks strong.
00:53He looks accurate.
00:54It looks like he's in charge and he certainly looks like he's not overwhelmed.
00:59He missed the memo on sliding.
01:00I don't know.
01:01I don't know when he's going to pick that up.
01:04But it makes me nervous, you know, especially coming off of a concussion.
01:07I didn't think he was going to play this week.
01:09I thought they were definitely going to overreact and be super sensitive about it.
01:12But, you know, he's a football player, first and foremost.
01:15That's the thing that that was coming out of the combine when they were going through
01:19all the interviews with all the different players.
01:21OK, he was third on the list.
01:23OK.
01:24And I can understand why.
01:25Williams was supposedly a can't miss player.
01:27Jaden Daniels was a can't miss player.
01:29But there was something about Drake May that really did set him apart.
01:34And that was his love of football and the way that he and the way that he played it.
01:38And sometimes we don't see that in college.
01:40And you got to learn that in these meetings that they have at the combines and then later
01:44on in pro days and things of that nature.
01:47So I remember when Joe Shane in the offseason hard knocks, walked in to the box there at
01:53Indianapolis and walked into the Patriot box and said, what would it take for us to
01:57get up to the number three pick?
01:58And rightfully so, Elliott Wolf said, no, I don't think so.
02:01That's not happening.
02:02Boomer, when you look at his interceptions, is it something that we should be worried
02:06about or is this just a learning curve for him coming into the league?
02:09One hundred percent learning curve.
02:10You know, the last interception that he threw, he never saw a hook or the safety.
02:15And those are things that you're aware of the more that you play.
02:18You know, those guys back there are pretty smart, even though they were a losing team
02:22and they do have a top defense, believe it or not, their offense was terrible down there
02:26in Tennessee.
02:27But those are just things that, you know, like you just you learn as you go.
02:32He'll learn a valuable lesson that throwing the ball down the middle of the field when
02:36you're late with it, most likely you're going to have a safety, especially a good one, come
02:42and steal the ball from you.
02:43So I think that's a learning curve.
02:45But this is what happens with most rookie quarterbacks.
02:48What's happening with Jaden Daniels or C.J. Stroud last year is the anomaly.
02:52Boomer, one of the things that I'm excited about is you start to see like out in Washington
02:59with Jaden Daniels, guys wanting to go play with him.
03:02I feel like Drake May, guys are going to want to play with him if he continues to show his
03:07success.
03:08Have you were you ever in the league and guys wanted to play with you?
03:13What was those communications like?
03:15Yeah, well, I'll tell you, it was an amazing situation for me because in ninety two was
03:19my last year with the Bengals and in ninety three I was going to be traded and I was either
03:23going to be traded to the Raiders or the Jets.
03:27And Reggie White was being lured to the Jets that were trying to get him as a free agency.
03:31But he said to Dick Steinberg, our general manager, and to Bruce Cosgrove, our head coach,
03:37you know, who is going to be your quarterback of the future before I sign here?
03:42And he they they told him that they really didn't have one.
03:46They had a rookie.
03:47His name was Browning Nagel.
03:48And he said, if you can trade for Boomer and you can get Boomer here, I would give you
03:52a much better chance to sign me now.
03:54They did trade for me, but ultimately he chose Green Bay, which was unfortunate for us.
03:58But his his recommendation to the to the Jets to trade for me was a big reason why I ultimately
04:06left Cincinnati.
04:07Gerard, I like Mayo.
04:09I hope he succeeds.
04:10I'm not a big enemy of his.
04:12However, I was really disappointed both that they didn't go for two at the end of that
04:17game and that after the game he was totally unprepared, offered just a I can't answer
04:23that right now when asked about why not going for two at the buzzer beater at the end of
04:27the fourth.
04:28Well, he's not going to he is, you know, Drake Mays, first of all, rookie quarterback and
04:34Gerard Mayo is trying to manage expectations, manage his game.
04:39There are a lot of things I like about his games, but there are the the occasional like
04:43I'm just going to take off and run and take a hit part of his game.
04:47And then there's the I'm just going to let it rip and not even think about throwing an
04:51interception when, in fact, it turns out to be an interception.
04:54I wish Gerard would have went for it.
04:55I really do.
04:56I mean, at this point in the season, what what does a tie get you?
05:01What does, you know, you know, anything but trying for going going for to get you get
05:06you nothing.
05:07You're going nowhere.
05:09And I, you know, I know all the players, all the coaches, the ownership, they all want
05:14to win.
05:15There's no question about that.
05:16And I was a little bit surprised that he did not go for it at the end there.
05:19I, you know, for me, watching the game from a distance, not in the locker room, I would
05:25have went for it.
05:26If you were Elliott Wolf and Gerard Mayo and the brain trust here, Boomer, is anybody other
05:32than Drake May on this team untouchable?
05:35No, I don't think so.
05:36I think I think, you know, teams with losing records now, this is why it's early November.
05:42It's time to assess your team moving forward.
05:45They've already made a couple of, you know, trades, which was not shocking to any of us.
05:51Maybe the Matt Judon one was early on in the season, but that kind of gave you a sense
05:55of what they were thinking going into the season.
05:58Let's try to get as many assets as we can moving forward.
06:01It's all about having draft picks and, you know, having more draft picks and just keep
06:05throwing more shots on goal, as they say in hockey.
06:08And the more shots you can throw on goal, the more likely you are to hit special players
06:12late in draft in the draft rounds.
06:14Boomer, we've been talking about for us here in New England, it's really about the future
06:20and what should the Patriots do with their draft pick right now.
06:23I think they're probably sitting atop the NFL with the number one overall pick.
06:27You have connections to Cincinnati.
06:29Is there any chance of the Patriots put together a good package with assets that they could
06:35land the guy like Jamar Chase or are the Bengals hell-bent and willing to pay him
06:41the money that he wants?
06:42My guess is that Jamar Chase is going nowhere.
06:45You could sign Tee Higgins in the offseason as a free agent, however.
06:49Jamar Chase is going to stay right there with Joe Burrow.
06:52They're too explosive.
06:53They're too good.
06:54And knowing the Bengals the way I do know them, they're not a cheap organization by
06:58any stretch of the imagination, at least no longer are they a cheap organization.
07:03But they pay their quarterbacks.
07:05They pay their wide receivers.
07:07They'll figure out a way to keep Jamar, but Tee Higgins unlikely to stay there.
07:11He'll be a free agent.
07:12And maybe that's a target for the Patriots next year.
07:14We all know what the Patriots need.
07:16They need a stable offensive line and they need playmakers and you can find playmakers
07:21in the NFL.
07:22There's no question about it.
07:23And as long as you have a quarterback that is dedicated to the game and can raise the
07:27level of everybody's play, which Drake may will end up doing, he actually has already
07:30done it.
07:32But you know, there are mistakes that are going to come along with it right now just
07:34because of the inexperience.
07:36To me, that's where I'm focusing all of my offseason efforts.
07:4095% of them are going to be on the offensive side of the ball to give Drake May the best
07:45opportunity to be the next Tom Brady, if you will.
07:49I was going to ask you about Zeke Elliott, but I guess I'll ask in general about the
07:54Cowboys and the free fall that is going on there.
07:57Is that, in your mind, set up perfectly for Bill Belichick to be their head coach?
08:03It certainly feels that way, Greg.
08:07There are five coaches right now that are going to be looking most likely for new jobs
08:11next year and Mike McCarthy will be one of them unless they turn it around, which does
08:14not look like it's going to happen, especially if Dak Prescott's hamstring is going to be
08:21worse than we think it is.
08:23It could be a four-week injury and if that is, their season is completely collapsing.
08:28So yes, he's one of those coaches.
08:29Dennis Allen down in New Orleans is one of those coaches.
08:31Antonio Pierce, Brian Dayball, these are all the coaches that you've got to be thinking
08:36about are going to be looking probably for jobs next year.
08:40When you have your quarterback on the sidelines saying, we effing suck, don't they know that
08:44all the cameras are on them at all points of the game?
08:47Do they just not care and how bad of a look is that for the rest of the team when you
08:50see your quarterback, your star of the team, saying that you guys suck?
08:56Especially when you're paying them as much money as they're paying them.
08:59You would think you'd be a little bit smarter about things of that nature, but yeah, I mean,
09:04it's miserable, Courtney, and there's nobody worse than your lead guy making the most money
09:11having that out there on the air and social media is all over it.
09:16I feel bad for them, but at the end of the day, they receive an enormous amount of coverage
09:21for no reason.
09:22I mean, they're, they're, they're just a brutal, brutal organization right now.
09:27And listen, the organization always tends to stink from the head down.
09:33And you know, if that guy at the top of the, uh, the food chain is not, um, you know, kind
09:38of a stable and is giving interviews and things of that nature just creates even more problems
09:44for the coach and for the general manager who he is.
09:46And then of course the players just don't say it to him on his own radio show.
09:50Oh my God.
09:51He'll get you fired.
09:52Well, not you, Boomer.
09:55Speaking of broadcasters, I don't know if you were ever fined when you were doing Monday
10:00night football all those years, but Tom Brady may be facing discipline from the NFL.
10:06According to some sources saying that his critique of the refs ejection yesterday in
10:11the Lions Packers game may fall into the purview of him critiquing NFL officiating as a minority
10:18owner.
10:19So my initial thought is like, they're not finding Tom Brady.
10:21I mean, Tom Brady, for God's sake, you can do whatever he wants.
10:24And so that's my initial reaction.
10:26My other reaction would be that there are probably 31 other teams out there that would
10:31be pushing the league office to find Tom Brady.
10:34Now the question is, is he going to get rid of the cell phone this time around?
10:38All right, question, question of the week for Boomer Esiason is presented by McFarland
10:46energy.
10:47It's the region's most dependable provider of home heating, oil delivery, and expert
10:51HVAC services at McFarland energy.com.
10:54It's a three-parter midway through the season.
10:57Boomer, real quick answers.
10:58Best team right now, midway through the season.
11:00I think Detroit right now would be the best team in the NFC.
11:03I think Baltimore, even though they're not in first place in their division, is the most
11:07difficult team to defend against in the league.
11:10Those two teams are rolling on offense.
11:13Most disappointing player.
11:15Most disappointing player has got to be Dak Prescott.
11:18He's right there.
11:19I mean, their team has got to be disappointing.
11:20I would also say the Bengals are really disappointing as well.
11:24You got a guy who plays down in your region.
11:26Yeah, Aaron Rodgers.
11:27I know.
11:28I mean, it's and they've already fired their coach and it's just it's a mess, but you know,
11:33they keep saying we got a pathway.
11:34We got a pathway.
11:35Well, sooner or later, you got to start winning games for God's sake.
11:38Yeah.
11:39All right.
11:40And then most surprising team so far.
11:41Well, it's got to be Washington and Jane Daniels.
11:45I think Dan Quinn thus far, you know, you got a quarterback that can play all of a sudden
11:48you can coach and he looks pretty good on the sideline.
11:52And certainly Jaden Daniels has exceeded everyone's expectations with his performance thus far.
11:57Boomer, thanks for the time.
11:59And we will talk to you again next week.
12:00Always my pleasure.
12:01Happy Election Day.
12:02Good luck.
12:03Go vote.
12:04See ya.
