00:00:00Showtime with Coop is brought to you by Price Picks and the Game Time app.
00:00:07Welcome to Showtime with Coop, insightful BS with his legendary Lakers teammates and
00:00:14the odd guest or personality, which is usually me.
00:00:18But on the other side of the room is Michael Cooper, the Hall of Famer.
00:00:21Coop, let me take the hosting reins today.
00:00:24I got a full show scheduled for you because you've been just too busy.
00:00:28I thought I'd see you on Jimmy Kimmel with all the rounds you've been making.
00:00:32I thought you'd be on Kimmel, you know, Colbert.
00:00:36I was waiting for it, Coop.
00:00:38Talk about the last two weeks after the induction and how your life maybe has changed a little
00:00:44bit.
00:00:45People looking at you differently a little?
00:00:48Nick, you know, a very chaotic and hectic weekend.
00:00:55I'm kind of glad it's over with, but I'm glad that I went through it.
00:01:00Family, friends, Laker family.
00:01:03It was absolutely touching, stunning and heartfelt.
00:01:12And to be finally inducted, enshrined, not inducted, but enshrined in the Hall of Fame,
00:01:19there's no feeling like it.
00:01:21People, you know, they call you Hall of Famer and it kind of a little bit embarrasses me
00:01:26a little bit.
00:01:27But, you know, all the work that you put in getting to this point, I appreciate it.
00:01:35But you know me, I'm just Coop, Michael Cooper.
00:01:38But I mean, it is a great feeling to be in.
00:01:40Now the Lakers have a five, that 80 period have five Hall of Famers.
00:01:47So I feel good in that company.
00:01:50You know, Nick, one thing that really happened that shocked not only myself, but well, it
00:01:56didn't shock me, but it was a pleasant surprise, but shocked a lot of other people, especially
00:02:00the Hall of Fame people.
00:02:02Of all the inductees, the enshrinees there, I had the most former players that came for
00:02:10my event.
00:02:11Easy Coop, the whole Lakers team was there.
00:02:15I mean, it was amazing to be, I was there to be a fan and sit and see, just be an observer
00:02:21sitting and seeing you guys BS and busting balls and just seeing, I mean, to sit a row
00:02:27behind Magic Johnson was pretty sick.
00:02:30You know what I'm saying?
00:02:31And I appreciate you being there.
00:02:33I appreciate you having me there.
00:02:36It was a great experience.
00:02:38And seeing all the Lakers together was, it was giving me chills.
00:02:44And there's no question, you definitely had the most people show up for you.
00:02:48And that there, to me, that meant a lot.
00:02:51And that goes to show you how tight our unit was in the 80s, that Showtime team, for those
00:02:57players to still be connected.
00:02:59And you know what, Nick?
00:03:00We got there and it was like old times, like we were doing something.
00:03:03And the lingo was flying, the talk was flying, the party afterwards was really good.
00:03:09People came.
00:03:10And of course, had the lead because, I mean, the World Series was going on and they went
00:03:14on to beat the Yankees and the Dodgers right now.
00:03:18You know, LA is a city of champions.
00:03:20Oh, come on now.
00:03:21It don't matter what sports you want to come across, Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, Sparks, we're
00:03:28going to win championships.
00:03:29And that's what we're about.
00:03:30So the Hall of Fame was just one of those, and you put the dot on the I, that was the
00:03:37whole thing.
00:03:38And you know what?
00:03:39I loved it.
00:03:40It's just amazing.
00:03:41And yeah, you know, that's my little Hall of Fame picture right there.
00:03:44Yeah, you're standing behind yourself there.
00:03:46Yeah, standing behind yourself.
00:03:47Passing 24.
00:03:48And you know what's so really special about that is that Kobe wore 24.
00:03:53Kobe wore number 8.
00:03:5524, me working Kobe out as a young player and going in at 24 means a lot because that
00:04:03told me that he was there too.
00:04:05So I had a lot of Laker fans.
00:04:07The one sad part about it is Jerry West.
00:04:10I really, really wish he could have been there.
00:04:12But dude, his son gave such a great speech.
00:04:15Oh, Johnny was fantastic, man.
00:04:19He was fantastic.
00:04:21Doug Collins?
00:04:22Listen, I love DC.
00:04:27I love DC.
00:04:28So do I, but wait a minute.
00:04:30I went, and I love Doug Collins.
00:04:32I didn't want to skip his speech, but I turned to Guy, our sales manager, and I said,
00:04:38I know Doug Collins.
00:04:39He's going to go on forever.
00:04:40I'm going to run to the bathroom, and I'll come back.
00:04:44So I ran to the bathroom.
00:04:45I come out into the lobby area.
00:04:47I hear him still going.
00:04:48So I'm like, I go outside to have a smoke.
00:04:52I'm like, I'll just have a smoke, right?
00:04:54I have a smoke.
00:04:55Who comes out?
00:04:56Vlade Divac.
00:04:57That's a cigarette, not weed.
00:04:58Not weed, cigarette.
00:05:00So Vlade and I are bullshitting outside.
00:05:02We both walk back in.
00:05:03He's still going.
00:05:05It had to be an hour, Koop.
00:05:07It had to be a fucking hour.
00:05:09Were you guys like kicking each other?
00:05:10It's typical Doug, right?
00:05:11Doug, you know, Doug's a storyteller, and that's the one thing about it.
00:05:17You know, he brought a lot of laughs to the whole situation.
00:05:20I love the fact where he...
00:05:22I don't say this in an ugly way, but he stuck his nose up at the Hall of Fame, you know?
00:05:29Dude!
00:05:30I only get to speak six minutes?
00:05:31No, I'm going to show you.
00:05:32I'm going to speak as long as I want.
00:05:33Did you see the teleprompter?
00:05:35Did you see the teleprompter?
00:05:36The teleprompter kept going, stop now.
00:05:39Seriously.
00:05:40And he kept going.
00:05:41But Doug, you know, this class of 24 is really special.
00:05:47Really special.
00:05:48Special people going in.
00:05:49Doug Collins, Jerry West, just to say a few names, and then on the player's side, Simone
00:05:54Augustus had a very eloquent speech.
00:05:56Eloquent.
00:05:57And really nice.
00:05:58And Chauncey Billups, man.
00:05:59Chauncey.
00:06:00You know, yeah, we all had our script on the teleprompter, but Chauncey, I don't think...
00:06:06I think he was truly...
00:06:07And we all were, speaking from his heart, but I very rarely saw Chauncey glance up there.
00:06:11So it was a great, great experience.
00:06:15One that I'll always remember.
00:06:17Got pictures, videos from it.
00:06:20But like I said, it was so chaotic and hectic.
00:06:22They had us doing something all the time, and then you're there trying to choreograph
00:06:27your group of people that are there.
00:06:29Lakers were fantastic.
00:06:30Jeannie Buss and Linda Rambis, Octavio, just to name a few.
00:06:36I mean, they had it laid out for me, and it was really, really special.
00:06:39How come Kurt didn't sit down with you guys?
00:06:42Is there a falling out with somebody, with Kurt Rambs?
00:06:44No.
00:06:45Kurt was there with us.
00:06:46Was he sitting down?
00:06:47I thought he was sitting behind me.
00:06:48No.
00:06:49Oh, I don't know.
00:06:50I don't know how they had the seating.
00:06:52That was the hall that did the seating like that, so I don't know.
00:06:54Well, they sat me perfect.
00:06:55I mean, I was right in front of Magic, alongside of Dick Vevetta, and come on, look what...
00:07:01I love Dick Vevetta.
00:07:02I love Dick Vevetta, dude.
00:07:05Fucking God told him.
00:07:06I said, Dick, you know what?
00:07:07You're a wonderful person, but you're an asshole as a referee.
00:07:09Yes.
00:07:10And he said, Coop, you know what?
00:07:12I'm glad you said that, because that means I was doing my job.
00:07:17The dude talked nonstop, I mean, telling stories.
00:07:20You should get him on here.
00:07:21He was such a great storyteller, and he's such a villain.
00:07:23I will.
00:07:24I'm going to get it, because I know somebody's got his number.
00:07:25Get him on you.
00:07:26That's what we're going to do.
00:07:27We'll have an official...
00:07:28He would be thrilled.
00:07:29Officials, official inside with Coop.
00:07:33He would be amazing.
00:07:34I mean, like, he was telling stories that I had forgotten, like crazy stuff about the
00:07:39eight, like the Dr. Jay Bird fight when Red came down from the stands, all that.
00:07:44I think he was talking about you and the Houston fight.
00:07:47That was a wing-dinger nod there, Coop.
00:07:50The Houston fight, you got in it hard against Houston.
00:07:53That was a good fight.
00:07:54How about Joe Mizzoula saying he wants fighting to come back to the NBA?
00:08:02He wants what?
00:08:03He wants fighting to come back to the NBA.
00:08:06Have you watched the NBA lately?
00:08:09That may happen.
00:08:10I love it.
00:08:11They are letting them play, and you know what?
00:08:15The amazing part about it is that usually, and again, there's no disparity or anything
00:08:22like that.
00:08:23The men referees as opposed to the women, but the women referees are letting them go
00:08:27too.
00:08:28Usually, you would look at them calling the whistle a little bit more, but I guess they've
00:08:31all got together as an officiating group.
00:08:34They said, hey, this is how it's going to be done.
00:08:37Let players make plays, and they've done a wonderful job.
00:08:41Coop, I love it.
00:08:42It's not quite what it was, but it's definitely reminiscent of your era.
00:08:46Yeah.
00:08:47You can touch people now.
00:08:48You can put hands on people like you couldn't before.
00:08:50It's funny to watch the players react as they're just getting used to it, though, because there's
00:08:54a lot of contactless flopping, you know what I mean?
00:09:00I think there's some inconsistency in what plays they're letting go physical and whatnot,
00:09:05but either way, anything more physical is better for the game.
00:09:09You know what?
00:09:10The amazing part is, watch this, Nick, the next time you watch it.
00:09:13I haven't watched the Celtic game yet, but I've watched the Lakers, and I've watched
00:09:20the Stars.
00:09:21Usually, when they go to the hoop and they get that call, they're not getting those calls.
00:09:25Yeah, they're not getting them.
00:09:26They're jumping up and down.
00:09:27LeBron is like, you know.
00:09:29LeBron is who started the whining, because he's the epic whiner, flopper of all time,
00:09:38and now everybody does it.
00:09:40Tatum is brutal, although he's been better this year, even with the added contact, and
00:09:45you do see it around the rim, because there's no more anticipation of whistles, which used
00:09:50to be so frustrating.
00:09:52Speaking of the current game, Coop, on my list, we're going to do a whole round of start
00:09:58bench cut, which is your proprietary game, Coop.
00:10:03That's like your favorite.
00:10:04And I have it kind of layered out into positions, so I think we'll have a good time with that.
00:10:09Before we go there, we'll talk a little bit about the Lakers' start so far this season,
00:10:13which has been impressive.
00:10:14But before we do that, let me remind everybody, Showtime with Coop is powered by Prizepix.

00:12:29They do an absolutely wonderful job keeping us alive and in the air.
00:12:33Without a doubt.
00:12:34You know, Nick, you mentioned the Lakers, so now I'm going to go ahead and jump into
00:12:38it.
00:12:39Well, we got to.
00:12:40It's a hot start.
00:12:41Four and two.
00:12:43Nothing.
00:12:45I think what the Lakers are doing, and I think J.J. Redick has got a great nine-man rotation
00:12:50it seems like he's going with, and the only key to this, the only key to the Lakers' success
00:12:57is health.
00:12:58Yeah.
00:12:59LeBron and A.D. are playing good, long and big solid minutes, but they're playing big,
00:13:04big time.
00:13:05I think the other night both of them had 30-plus, and they got probably about 25, 30 rebounds
00:13:09in between them.
00:13:11That's the only way that the Lakers can sustain, and we're hoping that, you know, the injury
00:13:16bug doesn't hit this team, because if they do, then they're going to be, to me, right
00:13:20now, they're the prize pick of the West right now.
00:13:23You're saying this with seriously no sentiment, no sentimentality.
00:13:28You honestly believe that?
00:13:30I do.
00:13:31Yeah, that's good.
00:13:32I mean, they're tough to beat.
00:13:33I think the people coming off the bench is good.
00:13:36That Dalton Connick, the rookie, is a pure, flat-out shooter.
00:13:39Gabe Vinson, as long as he stays healthy, is a solid backup point and another shooter.
00:13:43We had Gabe Vinson.
00:13:44He's very good.
00:13:45Max Chrissie, he's the only one I'm having concerns with, but again, his defense looks
00:13:49pretty good right now.
00:13:50He has youthfulness, and then he's allowing LeBron to get that extra rest, and then Jason
00:13:57Hayes is coming in, and when the Lakers go with that big lineup of Hayes, A.D., and LeBron,
00:14:03they're pretty tough to deal with, and again, you remember, when the Lakers won the championship
00:14:06in the bubble, that's who they had there, JaVale McGee, Dwight Howard, and A.D., and
00:14:12that's a big front line, big athletic front line, and I think they are able to recoup
00:14:16that again.
00:14:17Jackson Hayes just runs the floor, a lot of energy, block shots, defends, and you can
00:14:22throw him lobs, and as long as the Lakers, again, stay healthy, and that's going to be
00:14:27the key, I think they're the team to beat in the West right now.
00:14:30Well, let me tell you, I mean, A.D., I can't think of a year he started off hotter.
00:14:36I mean, he's just been really on fire on both ends of the court, and that, like you said-
00:14:42Well, the court has been passed on him, and he's officially accepting it, and he's playing.
00:14:45Has he accepted it yet?
00:14:46He seems to be, and it's working, I mean, LeBron is obviously still logging points,
00:14:53but he's had a couple under 20, and they've won, and that's shown, too, that they beat
00:14:59impressive teams.
00:15:00I mean, they beat Phoenix, they beat the Timberwolves, they beat Sacramento, I think, so they beat
00:15:06some tough teams.
00:15:07Well, you know what, they're catching these teams in disarray, and the Lakers are, I don't
00:15:12want to call them a hot mess, but the Lakers are kind of finding out themselves, but you
00:15:15know what, as they're finding out about themselves, they're beating these teams that are doing
00:15:20the same thing, so I'm loving the Lakers right now.
00:15:24I think there's a whole lot of season left for us to really find out who we are.
00:15:29They got really bounced bad the other night, but again, they responded coming back, beating
00:15:37Toronto.
00:15:38Yep.
00:15:39Cleveland Cavaliers beat them real good.
00:15:40The Cavs are really, really playing well, the Cavs.
00:15:44But right now, I'm liking the Lakers, I'm liking the Brownie situation.
00:15:49Are you?
00:15:50All right, talk about that.
00:15:51Talk about Brownie.
00:15:52I thought they were going to kind of abuse that, but they haven't, and the one good thing
00:15:56is when the Lakers got down, usually you throw in all your rookies, and I think they're bringing
00:16:01him along the right way, because you don't play him just because he's LeBron James' son.
00:16:05You play him for his contribution to the team, what he's going to bring.
00:16:09Right now, I think he's a little defensive liability, but I also like the fact that he's
00:16:14still kind of pacing himself.
00:16:17He's not trying to do too much, you don't see him out there just jacking up shots.
00:16:20He's taking good shots for the team, and I think that'll help his confidence in the long
00:16:25run, but it has to be pressure on him.
00:16:27I'm hearing a little bit that they may want to send him down to the G League, and if I
00:16:33were that, I would be real careful about it, because I need him to understand what the
00:16:38pro game is about.
00:16:39And again, you treat all rookies the same, he's no different.
00:16:42But I think for his case here, because LeBron is a heady player, good young player.
00:16:47Will he ever be at the status of his dad?
00:16:50Probably not, but he'll be a good pro in this league.
00:16:54It may take him being traded to another team to get the amount of minutes he's going to
00:16:57need to really develop.
00:16:59I don't think you get those same kind of...
00:17:02You'll get the minutes in the G League, but it's against mediocre players.
00:17:05He needs to play against elite players here in the NBA, and I think he's going to be good.
00:17:11It's just going to take time, and they're not throwing him in there just to throw him
00:17:14in.
00:17:15I think they're really doing a good job of when they play him, because the pressure is
00:17:18immense on him.
00:17:19But immense.
00:17:20That's on JJ so far.
00:17:22Yeah.
00:17:23And he's done a good job with that.
00:17:24So off the Lakers, let's go to the Celtics.
00:17:28Wait, before we go to the Celtics, are you hearing me okay?
00:17:32Yeah.
00:17:33Before we go to the Celtics, did you see what happened in Philadelphia last night?
00:17:36I know it's early in LA, I don't know if you got the news yet.
00:17:41Philly and who played?
00:17:42It was off the court.
00:17:43Oh no, I haven't heard it.
00:17:45Okay, so a Philadelphia Beat writer wrote a pretty inflammatory story about Embiid,
00:17:56and invoked Embiid's dead brother's name.
00:18:00Basically the gist of it was, he said, you know, Joel Embiid made a commitment to give
00:18:07it his all to the sport he loves when his brother passed away, and he's not yet fulfilled
00:18:14that due to injuries and constant off the court stuff.
00:18:18Well, Embiid took offense to this.
00:18:20He physically assaulted that journalist last night in the locker room.
00:18:26He went after him.
00:18:28It was in the paper on Thursday.
00:18:31Last night, Embiid didn't play, but he's in the locker room, and the reporter walks in,
00:18:35I can't remember his name and I know him.
00:18:37He walks in, and they get into it, Embiid confronts him, and it ends up with Embiid
00:18:42putting his hands up.
00:18:45I've heard that.
00:18:46Yeah, I have never heard that.
00:18:48Do you remember any time a player has assaulted a media member?
00:18:52I've seen situations where they come nose to nose, but never touch them.
00:18:56But you know what, talking about somebody's dead relative, or anybody that they care and
00:19:00love about, that's crossing the line a little bit, and I think the media gotta be careful
00:19:04about what they say.
00:19:06I mean, yeah, you try to have freedom of speech, and you can say certain things, but you don't
00:19:10do that.
00:19:11I disagree with that.
00:19:12And if it were me, I might have put hands on him myself, too, because, again, you don't
00:19:17know nothing about my brother.
00:19:19All you know about is what you read in the paper, so keep his name out your mouth.
00:19:23That's exactly what he said.
00:19:25That's exactly what he said.
00:19:26Keep my brother's name out of your mouth.
00:19:28Yeah.
00:19:29He put his hands on him.
00:19:30I don't know.
00:19:31I agree with you 100%.
00:19:33I mean, there's a journalistic integrity that was kind of crossed there.
00:19:37But Embiid can't, players cannot, this isn't political media, and it's not the WWE.
00:19:45Like players can't assault media members.
00:19:48I think the bigger assault would be if Embiid literally put him on mute all season and never
00:19:54answered another question for the rest of the year.
00:19:56Then he asked.
00:19:57I agree with that one.
00:19:58I'll go with that one.
00:19:59Yeah, because then he puts himself in a, he puts the journalist in the position with his
00:20:03outlet.
00:20:04Why aren't you getting answers?
00:20:05Why aren't you able to talk to Embiid?
00:20:07Exactly.
00:20:08I would have just put him on blackout.
00:20:09But who am I to say, Coop, I mean, I'm not in the situation in the heat of the moment
00:20:13and the reporter didn't say anything about my family.
00:20:15So I might have reacted the same way.
00:20:17You know what I'm saying?
00:20:18Exactly.
00:20:19That's what we're saying.
00:20:20No, I don't condone violence or anything like that.
00:20:22But I mean, that probably would have had my hair on the back of my neck riled up too.
00:20:26But I agree with you, Nick, that might've been the best route to take.
00:20:29But again, you know what, hearing that, and we don't, do we really know the depth of what
00:20:32he said in that article?
00:20:33Oh yeah, it's out.
00:20:35It's on the internet.
00:20:36I didn't hear this story.
00:20:37Yeah, it's on the internet.
00:20:38So I don't know how to react to it.
00:20:39But if he says something about his brother, that's all limits.
00:20:43It was more about Embiid years ago using his brother's passing as motivation and fuel to
00:20:52be the best he could possibly be.
00:20:54And the reporter was calling that out, saying it's not really worked.
00:20:59You need to show up to the arena in order to be the best player you could possibly be.
00:21:03What is going on down in Philadelphia?
00:21:06Do they create players that just get paid and don't play?
00:21:09I mean, between Simmons in the past, now Embiid, Paul George, like why even bring him on a
00:21:14team that's constantly injured?
00:21:17Like Philadelphia- Is he injured now?
00:21:19I saw he didn't play the other night.
00:21:20He's injured again.
00:21:21He didn't play last night.
00:21:22Or the night before.
00:21:23What's his injury?
00:21:24I mean, I know that these guys now- I can't keep track.
00:21:27I can't keep track.
00:21:28These guys now in the NBA, they feel, and I just get this from looking at them, and
00:21:34then you hear different points.
00:21:35Oh, he has a back issue or- You know what?
00:21:39These guys think that they play in the NBA, that they have to feel absolutely perfect.
00:21:43No pain.
00:21:44I can't have any pain anywhere in order for me to step on the court.
00:21:48How much- You know what?
00:21:49In the 80s, basketball especially, and I can understand that, football too, you're going
00:21:54to have some pain after 30, 40 games.
00:21:56You should.
00:21:57You should.
00:21:58You're practicing.
00:21:59You do a lot of time in practice.
00:22:00You work out a lot.
00:22:01You're shooting.
00:22:02You're really honing in on your craft.
00:22:04So there's going to be some pain.
00:22:06Nick, I played- We were playing the Boston Celtics in 1984, championship series, and
00:22:15we were at shoot-around, and the media was coming in.
00:22:18There was probably like 50 of them, and you remember-
00:22:20Were we in L.A. or in Boston?
00:22:23In L.A. or in Boston?
00:22:24This was in L.A.
00:22:25Okay.
00:22:26And the curtain, they used to pull this curtain back, and the media would come in there, and
00:22:30we'd be out on the court.
00:22:31Well, there was another exit that I could go out down there, down closer to where- It
00:22:36was almost at the other end of the court, and I could go in there and come from the
00:22:40backside and get to our locker room.
00:22:42And hide.
00:22:43Well, as soon as we broke, hey, and Riles goes, the media's coming in, and they pulled
00:22:48the curtain back.
00:22:49Well, me and James Worthy took off, and we were running.
00:22:53Now, I did not know in that other hallway that they pulled a scaffold out to let players
00:22:59from the- The visiting team used to go in that way, and they didn't want people throwing
00:23:03anything on them, so they pulled a scaffold.
00:23:04But this time, the scaffold was back, and the curtains were covering it a little bit.
00:23:09So all I saw was a hallway.
00:23:11Nick, I ran in there, man, and I ran in, and I ran right into that scaffold.
00:23:16Bam.
00:23:17Ooh.
00:23:18And this cut right here, you can probably see it right there.
00:23:20Yeah, you can see it.
00:23:21Yep, yep.
00:23:22So I ran into that, and I'm like, next thing I know, James Worthy's over me, and the trainer,
00:23:29Gary Meadey's coming down.
00:23:30You on the ground?
00:23:31You are right.
00:23:32I knocked myself out.
00:23:33Did it bleed?
00:23:34I got 21 stitches right here.
00:23:37In today's game, I would have been put in a concussion protocol.
00:23:40For sure, yeah, yeah.
00:23:41But I got up, and I'm like, damn, what'd I hit, Gary?
00:23:44He goes, Koop, you ran into the- It was kind of off-center.
00:23:47They take me to the locker room.
00:23:49Gary is picking, with tweezers, pieces of wood out of my scalp.
00:23:54They send me to the doctor in Centinella.
00:23:57I get stitched up.
00:24:00Come to the game that night, I fucking play.
00:24:03That would have never happened to me.
00:24:04I played a game.
00:24:05I had 18 points that game.
00:24:06No, I had 12 points that game.
00:24:07But that's how we were.
00:24:09You played the game of basketball, man, and you played.
00:24:12If you were achy a little bit, your back, you at least give it a try.
00:24:16These guys nowadays, man, I'm hurt, or I'm twisting my ankle, I can't go.
00:24:20Man, I played, yeah, you just play the game, man.
00:24:23Mikael played on broken ankles, you know?
00:24:25Isaiah Thomas played on a broken ankle.
00:24:27I mean, these guys just played.
00:24:28And gave me 27 and a quarter.
00:24:29You guys won him.
00:24:30Yeah, he killed you.
00:24:31But you guys wanted to play.
00:24:34You probably came back to the arena all stitched up and said, where's my uniform?
00:24:37Oh, yeah.
00:24:3821 stitches I got.
00:24:40I went home, because this was right after shootaround.
00:24:42I went home.
00:24:43Went to the doctor.
00:24:44Went home.
00:24:45Came back.
00:24:46And Gary goes, what's going on?
00:24:47I said, why are you even asking me that, dude?
00:24:48I'm playing the game.
00:24:49Give me my uniform.
00:24:50Was it the finals, or just a regular season?
00:24:52Huh?
00:24:53Was it a regular season, or the finals?
00:24:55No, this was in the championship series.
00:24:58Oh, you play.
00:24:59Yeah, my God, if you didn't play.
00:25:01But I mean, I've had injuries, you know, twisting my arm, had a bruised clavicle.
00:25:06I went up to block somebody's shot during the regular season, broke my hand.
00:25:10Broke your hand, I remember.
00:25:11And I knew it hurt.
00:25:12I played every game.
00:25:15Did that get caught on the rim?
00:25:16I kind of remember that, when you broke your hand.
00:25:18Well, I was going up to block somebody's shot.
00:25:20Yeah.
00:25:21Yeah.
00:25:22He hit the ball, my hand hit the rim.
00:25:23Rim, yeah.
00:25:24And I blocked the shot.
00:25:25And you play the game, man.
00:25:27But today's player is a different breed.
00:25:29Makes so much more money.
00:25:31And you know, you just play.
00:25:33And you know what?
00:25:34We don't really know what's really wrong with George Paul, or how serious the injury is.
00:25:40But you know what?
00:25:41Guys see their bodies as temple, and you have to understand, hey,
00:25:44if I can't go out there and give it my all, I'm not giving it at all.
00:25:47And so that's what it is.
00:25:48The NBA is at least doing something to curb the load management.
00:25:51And I think that's a good thing.
00:25:53Now, before we move on to the Celtics, I have to ask you one question.
00:25:56One more question about the Hall of Fame.
00:25:58Did you talk to Larry Bird?
00:26:00Yeah.
00:26:01I actually did.
00:26:02So you've got to tell the story.
00:26:03Tell the story.
00:26:04I saw him.
00:26:05Where did I see him?
00:26:07Saturday.
00:26:08We had breakfast.
00:26:09We went to the hotel and had this breakfast.
00:26:11And he was in there.
00:26:13I said, Larry, how you doing?
00:26:14Hey, Coop, how you doing?
00:26:15I said, how things been going, Larry?
00:26:17Fine.
00:26:18How things been going with you?
00:26:19Fine.
00:26:20And he gets up and walks out.
00:26:24But you know what?
00:26:25That's Larry.
00:26:26He did.
00:26:27I asked him to take a picture with my kids.
00:26:29Oh, that's great.
00:26:30Take a picture with my kids.
00:26:31So I think I got out of it a little bit.
00:26:33You didn't get a picture with him?
00:26:34No picture?
00:26:35You didn't get a picture?
00:26:36No, I didn't get a picture with him.
00:26:37That would have been great.
00:26:38I should have.
00:26:39You should have.
00:26:40But I did get his goat.
00:26:41Because I know in my speech, I said, you know what?
00:26:43I know.
00:26:44I also want to thank Boston Celtics and Larry Bird.
00:26:45And he chuckled at that.
00:26:46They put him on the Jumbotron.
00:26:47He chuckled and did one of these.
00:26:48He is cool.
00:26:49That was fun to me.
00:26:50For somebody who has been, you know, his whole career kind of been a hick and backward, boy,
00:26:51he's become cool in his older age.
00:26:52He's embraced getting older, I think.
00:26:53I think we all are.
00:26:54Yeah, you all are.
00:26:55We go through things, you know.
00:26:56And you got to have fun with it.
00:26:57Because, again, the player that you were makes the person that you are today.
00:26:58And you got to have fun with it.
00:26:59Because, again, the player that you were makes the person that you are today.
00:27:00And you got to have fun with it.
00:27:01And you got to have fun with it.
00:27:02But, just, Larry is a unique individual.
00:27:03Oh, for sure.
00:27:04I think we all saw the coming out party to him when he and Magic did that commercial
00:27:05for Congress.
00:27:06Yeah.
00:27:07When Magic's in a limousine and driving, you know.
00:27:08Yeah.
00:27:09Yeah.
00:27:10Yeah.
00:27:11Yeah.
00:27:12Yeah.
00:27:13Yeah.
00:27:14Yeah.
00:27:15Yeah.
00:27:16Yeah.
00:27:17Yeah.
00:27:18Yeah.
00:27:19Yeah.
00:27:20Yeah.
00:27:21Yeah.
00:27:22Yeah.
00:27:23Yeah.
00:27:24Yeah.
00:27:25Yeah.
00:27:26Yeah.
00:27:27Yeah.
00:27:28Yeah.
00:27:29Yeah.
00:27:30Yeah.
00:27:31Yeah.
00:27:32Yeah.
00:27:33And he had the limousine and drives out to this farm.
00:27:34Yeah.
00:27:35And Larry's out there.
00:27:36And, hey, who's this?
00:27:37And Magic rolls down and says, it's Magic.
00:27:38And they get there.
00:27:39It's this year's MVP.
00:27:40For their first MVP.
00:27:41Yeah.
00:27:42I think, didn't soften their game.
00:27:43But we have to be friends.
00:27:45And we have to respect and appreciate one another.
00:27:47And I think, at this time now in our life, when I see Dr. J, I see Isaiah, I have softened
00:27:52a little bit.
00:27:53You know?
00:27:54Yeah.
00:27:55Before, when we were playing, I probably would never have gone up to him.
00:27:57Larry was very nice enough to take pictures with my kids,
00:28:01and they were excited about that,
00:28:03and they would go,
00:28:03Dad, that's the one that said that you're the toughest one
00:28:06that's ever guarded him.
00:28:08And yeah.
00:28:08Damn right.
00:28:09Damn right he said that.
00:28:11And he doesn't compliment anyone.
00:28:13I know, and that's the one thing I love about it.
00:28:15Because like I said before, guarding him,
00:28:17I never tried to hurt Larry or play him physical.
00:28:20I mean, I tried to play him physical,
00:28:21but not over across the line on him.
00:28:23So it was always fun.
00:28:24Tis the most wonderful time of the year.
00:28:25Yes.
00:28:27The NBA season, folks.
00:28:29It is the best.
00:28:32Look, the NFL is great.
00:28:33I understand.
00:28:34But if you're looking into star power,
00:28:36celebrity, entertainment,
00:28:40it's the NBA.
00:28:41There's no doubt about it.
00:28:42And my Celtics, I'm looking for them to defend.
00:28:44We need a new dynasty in the NBA.
00:28:47We need one.
00:28:48Okay?
00:28:49And I think this Celtic group can do it.
00:28:51I know the Celtic group can do it.
00:28:53And you know who else,
00:28:54from what I understand as a Celtic fan,
00:28:55it's Hugh Jackman.
00:28:56Yes.
00:28:57Wolverine himself, the greatest showman,
00:28:59Hugh Jackman is a big Celtic fan.
00:29:02And if you're like us and you want to check out the Celtics

00:31:40But moving on to the Celtics.
00:31:41Talk to us about your Celtics, Nick.
00:31:44Well, dude, six and one.
00:31:46And I mean, they just finished a really good
00:31:50back-to-back away stand against the Hornets.
00:31:54They've been playing.
00:31:56They won both those games, right?
00:31:57Yeah, they won both those games.
00:31:59And the last game, last night's game,
00:32:02I was on the post-game show last night
00:32:03and it was great because they had a lead in the first half
00:32:07and lost it in the third
00:32:08and where you might have seen years ago
00:32:10them not get it back, they got it back.
00:32:12They're playing with swagger and confidence.
00:32:15And what I really love, Coop,
00:32:16is it's rare that you see a championship team
00:32:19come back the next season with a chip on their shoulder.
00:32:23This team definitely has one.
00:32:25Couple reasons.
00:32:27Hold on, let me ask you a question.
00:32:28Okay, sorry to cut you off.
00:32:29No, I'm good.
00:32:30Is the chip on the team's shoulder
00:32:32or is it on Jason Tatum's shoulder for not winning MVP?
00:32:36I think it's on Brown's shoulders
00:32:41for not making all defensive last year.
00:32:45And making the Olympics team.
00:32:46And making the Olympics team.
00:32:48It's on Tatum for being benched
00:32:51for no apparent reason during the Olympics.
00:32:54Dude, he is, first of all,
00:32:57the both of them have bulked up and they're stronger.
00:33:00But Tatum has just been phenomenal.
00:33:02Even when he's not shot well,
00:33:04he is assisted and rebounded and his defense is great.
00:33:07So yeah, it's rare you see a team come back
00:33:10and the whole team has a chip on their shoulder
00:33:12because everybody said they were a fake champion
00:33:16because of the injuries that their opponents faced
00:33:18in the lead up to winning.
00:33:20And all of ESPN picked the Mavs, which was asinine.
00:33:24I don't understand that.
00:33:26So I think all those things combined
00:33:28has a chip on their shoulder and they're playing with it.
00:33:31And the best part is like last night, no Jalen Brown.
00:33:34We haven't had KP yet.
00:33:36The Celtics have played really well with early injuries.
00:33:40And like, it's an amazing thing to be able to say,
00:33:44don't bring Porzingis back until January
00:33:47if you don't have to, because they're playing so well.
00:33:49And Horford is just, you know,
00:33:51last night he didn't score,
00:33:52but he had eight assists, seven rebounds,
00:33:55you know, drawing double teams, making passes.
00:33:57He's just, they're good, man.
00:33:59They're gonna repeat.
00:34:00Well, Horford's the X factor for me, for them,
00:34:03because he's able to play the many positions.
00:34:05He guards just about anybody.
00:34:07You can switch him on a big.
00:34:09Yeah, well, you guys got the tissue paper
00:34:12back there in Porzingis.
00:34:13He's-
00:34:14But who cares?
00:34:15Huh?
00:34:16But who cares?
00:34:16They could win without him.
00:34:17They've proven it.
00:34:18They've proven it.
00:34:19No, you don't need him at some point.
00:34:20But they won without him last year for the most part.
00:34:22I mean, he had that great coming.
00:34:24He only played in two games last year
00:34:26and he came off the bench.
00:34:27Yeah, and that first game back,
00:34:29he had probably the best shooting thing.
00:34:30That took him over the hump.
00:34:32That first game back was a typical Boston Garden game.
00:34:35Because that crowd just,
00:34:36you've experienced it how many times
00:34:39and that crowd goes wild.
00:34:40I'll tell you, the Staples Center has,
00:34:43the crowd has gotten better there.
00:34:44I mean, we used to make fun of you guys in LA
00:34:46because you show up late, the fans don't cheer,
00:34:50they eat sushi, but it's gotten much better.
00:34:53Well, we got a new generation of fans now.
00:34:57You got younger kids that have grown up now
00:34:59and they're really appreciated.
00:35:00So now when they go to the game when they're 18, 20, 23,
00:35:04they got kids, they got a job now,
00:35:06they can identify with the players
00:35:08because they've been watching them for a while.
00:35:09Boston just has always had that.
00:35:11The fans have been just so raunchous there
00:35:13and sometimes they go over the line,
00:35:15but you know what?
00:35:16You grow to love them.
00:35:18Yeah.
00:35:19I have a love-hate relationship with the fans of Boston,
00:35:21but I always will respect them
00:35:23because they know the game of basketball
00:35:25and they know what they're looking at.
00:35:26Coop, I just come across on YouTube on my feed,
00:35:30the 1988 Red Auerbach honoring Kareem at the Garden.
00:35:38And it was so awkward, but at the same time,
00:35:41those fans, I think they gave them
00:35:42like a six minute standing ovation.
00:35:45I mean, so those-
00:35:46They know talent when they see it.
00:35:47They know good players.
00:35:48They did it for Dr. J too, when he retired.
00:35:51I mean, they just cheered for like 10 minutes, I think.
00:35:54And that stuff, I think as opponents coming in,
00:35:58yeah, you hate them maybe
00:36:00when they're being a little out of line,
00:36:01which happens once in a while,
00:36:03but you respect them because they do know the game.
00:36:05I really thought that they were,
00:36:07when I retired, would bring me back
00:36:08and kind of give me something
00:36:10and give me a standing ovation, but they didn't.
00:36:12So I don't take that personal
00:36:14because they didn't do it for Isaiah Thomas.
00:36:16Oh, they would never do it for Isaiah.
00:36:18Dude, I'm gonna tell you something.
00:36:19When they retired KG's number,
00:36:21Isaiah came back to the Garden to not introduce him,
00:36:25but there he's his mentor.
00:36:26So to stand with him,
00:36:28he got booed like it was 1987 all over again.
00:36:32And after-
00:36:33How long? Did he get a six minute boo?
00:36:35It wasn't six minutes, but it was long.
00:36:36And afterwards I was talking to him and he goes,
00:36:38you know what?
00:36:39Here, that's not a boo, that's love.
00:36:43Exactly.
00:36:43And I said, I agree with you.
00:36:45If I had come back and they did that
00:36:47and they would boo me-
00:36:48Well, you wouldn't get booed.
00:36:49Thank you, because you guys are finally saying coo.
00:36:52Yeah, coo, you might get that.
00:36:54You would get coo.
00:36:54You wouldn't get boos, I know that.
00:36:56I remember being a kid when they'd introduce you
00:36:58when you did start on occasion,
00:37:00I would say, why are they booing their own player?
00:37:02Same thing with Chief.
00:37:03When he'd get introduced, Chief, everything would get booed.
00:37:07You know what?
00:37:07I love Robert Parris
00:37:08because I'm seeing him on TikTok now.
00:37:10He and his wife-
00:37:11Oh, he's on TikTok now.
00:37:12Yep, that was me.
00:37:12I got him on TikTok.
00:37:14He's trying to loosen him up,
00:37:16but he cannot loosen up.
00:37:17He's still all stiff.
00:37:19And he's so damn funny.
00:37:20Like, you know from being on this show,
00:37:22he's funny as hell.
00:37:23But man, when he's not in the mood, he is stoic.
00:37:26Stoic.
00:37:27I had dinner with him during the finals.
00:37:28What a hell of a nice guy.
00:37:30He's funny as hell.
00:37:30Oh, Chief is so nice and stuff like that.
00:37:33He's not on my list here, Coop.
00:37:34We're gonna do bench, or start bench cut.
00:37:37Well, let me tell the people,
00:37:39you're listening to Showtime with Coop,
00:37:40and Nick has got the show rolling for us.
00:37:43He's hitting us with some lefts and some rights.
00:37:45Too bad the Boston, what do you guys,
00:37:48the White Sox, Red Sox couldn't do anything
00:37:50because it's all about Dodgers, baby, Dodgers.
00:37:53And I don't know if they can repeat,
00:37:55but this is our year.
00:37:56But Coop, the Patriots sent the Dodgers
00:38:00back to L.A. in their jet.
00:38:03Now, you wanna talk about Boston hating New York?
00:38:07That's hatred, right?
00:38:11Either or.
00:38:12Nick is getting ready to take us into our next segment.
00:38:15And it is SBC, baby.
00:38:19And what I did, Coop,
00:38:20is I tried to keep it somewhat positional or thematic, right?
00:38:23So my first cluster for you is defensive guards, all right?
00:38:29So I'm gonna go with Gary Payton, the glove.
00:38:33Honest, that's an obvious pick.
00:38:35Walt Frazier, Clyde, and Dennis Johnson.
00:38:39Ooh, that's a good one there.
00:38:42Gary Payton, Walt Frazier, Dennis Johnson.
00:38:48Ooh.
00:38:49That's a tough one,
00:38:49because I know you love these people.
00:38:50I'm going to, I'm gonna start Clyde.
00:38:55And the only reason I'm gonna start him-
00:38:56You're gonna cut D.
00:38:57Because Clyde had flavor.
00:38:58He had flair.
00:38:59He had that charisma.
00:39:00I know, I know.
00:39:02And he had those hell of a great sideburns.
00:39:04Yeah, man chops.
00:39:06You gotta love those things, man.
00:39:07So I'm gonna start Clyde.
00:39:10I'm going to,
00:39:14woo, I'm going to
00:39:18bench Gary Payton.
00:39:20You're cutting D, man.
00:39:21With the glove.
00:39:22I love the glove, man.
00:39:23The glove is something special.
00:39:25And I have to cut my boy, DJ.
00:39:27Now, DJ and I grew up here in Southern California.
00:39:31And unfortunately he was great with the Seattle Supersonics.
00:39:35He was great with the Phoenix Suns.
00:39:37And then he went to the Boston Celtics.
00:39:40And that just kind of kills it for me.
00:39:41But I love DJ.
00:39:43I love his family.
00:39:44I love, yeah, I have to go.
00:39:47DJ, I gotta cut you, boy.
00:39:49And I know you probably-
00:39:49Let me ask you a DJ question.
00:39:51DJ question.
00:39:52Because right now there's a lot of talk
00:39:54about Derek White of the Celtics
00:39:56being one of the greatest blocking guards.
00:40:00At least as a Celtic.
00:40:03DJ can block shots, man.
00:40:04Oh, DJ was phenomenal, man.
00:40:06DJ, you know what?
00:40:08He had the whole package.
00:40:09And again, people, if you haven't watched DJ,
00:40:12the only time you saw him when he was with the Celtics.
00:40:15Go back.
00:40:16Go back and watch him when he was
00:40:17with the Seattle Supersonics in 1979
00:40:20when they won the championship.
00:40:21Him and Gus Williams, that backcourt,
00:40:23with downtown Freddie Brown.
00:40:25Freddie Brown, yeah.
00:40:25They were the most feared threesome in the league.
00:40:27DJ, a great ball handler, could score.
00:40:31Athletic.
00:40:31But his forte was defense.
00:40:32Gus Williams, man, Gus was fast.
00:40:34They were very good.
00:40:35So look at that.
00:40:36But you know, I hate to cut my boy, but I got to.
00:40:38So one more question.
00:40:40You think that Walt and Gary
00:40:42had better pickpockets better than DJ?
00:40:45Is that why you're going with them?
00:40:46Or is there, what, why cut DJ?
00:40:50Well, the glove-
00:40:50Because of the Patriot.
00:40:52Walt Frazier was a scorer.
00:40:54But he was a defender too.
00:40:55He worked his way in at the score,
00:40:57but he just had so much fucking flair.
00:40:59I got to go with him on that.
00:41:00He had the big afro and the whole thing.
00:41:02Kind of defined the 70s, to a degree.
00:41:03Yeah, I guess, yeah.
00:41:04He was, and then he used to wear fur coats
00:41:07and come to the arena.
00:41:08Guys think they dress now?
00:41:10I get some of the footage from the NBA.
00:41:12You know who still dresses?
00:41:13Artis Gilmore.
00:41:14Did you see him at the Hall of Fame?
00:41:15I love Artis.
00:41:16I saw him at the Hall of Fame.
00:41:17He was there.
00:41:18Took a picture with his daughter.
00:41:19But Artis still got flair.
00:41:21But Gary Payton, Gary was just a unique individual
00:41:24in his own.
00:41:25Really, really, we almost can give him, almost,
00:41:30because there was a lot of trash talkers then.
00:41:31Gary could always get the trash-talking award
00:41:34for the talk.
00:41:35But the glove was something else, man.
00:41:36Could score, but just feisty.
00:41:38I love that look he had.
00:41:39Gary had the look.
00:41:41You know, like, you ain't getting spit on.
00:41:43He just had the look about him.
00:41:44The look of the dog, yep.
00:41:45DJ was Mr. Nice Guy.
00:41:48And I've never seen so many freckles on a guy.
00:41:50And on a black guy, especially.
00:41:53All right, next cluster.
00:41:56Charles Barkley, Elgin Baylor, and John Havlicek.
00:42:02Charles Barkley, Elgin Baylor, John Havlicek.
00:42:05I'm going to,
00:42:08I'm going to...
00:42:11Wow, this one's the toughest.
00:42:13I'm gonna start,
00:42:16I'm gonna start Charles Barkley,
00:42:17because he was an absolute beast.
00:42:20And people don't recognize it.
00:42:22And when he came out of Auburn, man,
00:42:24the first couple of years with the Sixers,
00:42:27Doc had to roll him in, man.
00:42:29But I have never seen anybody so powerful like that.
00:42:33And eventually Carl Malone came on.
00:42:34But Charles Barkley was the first big, big guy
00:42:37that was so powerful, could jump, athletic,
00:42:39and still had a nice little jumper.
00:42:42So I'm gonna start Charles.
00:42:45I'm going to, this is a hard one.
00:42:48I know, I know, because you love these guys.
00:42:50I'm going to bench John Havlicek.
00:42:52You're cutting Elgin.
00:42:53And the reason I'm benching John Havlicek
00:42:55is because he was my idol, even though he was a Celtic.
00:42:58But John Havlicek had the ability to play many positions.
00:43:03And he was just a perfect six man.
00:43:06If I couldn't start Elgin, I got to cut Elgin,
00:43:09because Elgin's not a bench player.
00:43:10But I love Elgin Baylor to death.
00:43:13Elgin was one of the first players to play with one hand.
00:43:15Growing up, we used to all go in our backyard
00:43:18and go to the basket and leap and lean on, and all of that.
00:43:21Chick Hearn would call Elgin out.
00:43:23The sweetest player, sweetest three player in the game.
00:43:25Three man is a small forward.
00:43:27So I'm gonna start Charles, bench John Havlicek,
00:43:31and I have to cut Elgin.
00:43:33But again, I'm cutting him with tears in my eyes, Nick,
00:43:36because he's a Laker
00:43:38and one of the greatest to play the game.
00:43:39I know people, were you crazy?
00:43:41Hey, I might be a little crazy.
00:43:42I'm getting older, my age is 68,
00:43:44but I got to put a Celtic ahead of the Lakers
00:43:47for this one time.
00:43:47Well, Coop, in all the practice sessions
00:43:50you guys have had or whatever,
00:43:51you know, the legends come in and out.
00:43:52Did you ever have Elgin come in and put up a couple shots?
00:43:56No, I never.
00:43:56That's weird, right?
00:43:57Elgin, by that time, had moved on to the Clippers,
00:44:00but I always enjoyed meeting him.
00:44:02I always enjoyed meeting Elgin and spending time with him
00:44:06and his lovely wife, Elaine.
00:44:07And you know what, I was with Elgin
00:44:10probably about two weeks before he passed.
00:44:13I remember that.
00:44:14We were at an event together.
00:44:15And Elgin, you know what,
00:44:16Michael Cooper, you were a very solid player.
00:44:18I like solid players.
00:44:19A gentleman, right?
00:44:20He was a, pardon me?
00:44:21He was a gentleman.
00:44:22Yeah. A gentleman.
00:44:23Yeah, a gentleman.
00:44:24Elgin, I loved Elgin.
00:44:25And you know, again, he's one of the ones we missed.
00:44:28Coop, were you at the pickup game
00:44:29where Magic was playing and Wilt ended up pulling up
00:44:33and ended up playing with them?
00:44:35No, I didn't see that one.
00:44:36No, oh, it's a great story.
00:44:38You got to Google that one.
00:44:39That's a great story.
00:44:39Wilt Chamberlain?
00:44:40Wilt Chamberlain ended up in the gym.
00:44:43And Magic, I don't know if there was,
00:44:46he called foul on the play.
00:44:48And Riley was like, that ain't no foul.
00:44:50Keep going.
00:44:51And Wilt played with them.
00:44:53And Wilt was knocking down threes.
00:44:54There's footage of it somewhere on YouTube.
00:44:56Ask Magic about it.
00:44:57I don't recall that, unless I-
00:44:59Yeah, you might not have.
00:44:59It was in the summer.
00:45:00It was in the summer.
00:45:01It was a summer game.
00:45:02But you got to ask Magic about that.
00:45:03It's a great story.
00:45:04I will.
00:45:05All right, let's see.
00:45:06Let's move on to,
00:45:07did you ever have any interactions with Wilt?
00:45:09Yes, yes.
00:45:10We used to come around before he passed.
00:45:12He would come.
00:45:13I got a picture of my wall in there.
00:45:14I'm gonna show it to you the next time.
00:45:16It's got me, Magic, Norm Nixon, Jerry West,
00:45:20Elgin Baylor all in it.
00:45:22And Norm was talking shit to Wilt.
00:45:24And Wilt grabbed him like this and was shaking him.
00:45:26And they took a picture of that.
00:45:27So I'll show you that one.
00:45:30But Nick, before we go on, I'm gonna give you one.
00:45:32All right, go ahead.
00:45:33Oh, you have a show for me too.
00:45:34And this is a Boston Celtic one.
00:45:36So it's gonna be hard for you to do it either way.
00:45:38John Havacek, Bill Russell, Paul Pierce.
00:45:43Havacek, Russell, Pierce.
00:45:46Oh, I'm gonna start Russ.
00:45:50Bench, Paul.
00:45:53I hate this one a lot.
00:45:56I gotta cut Hondo.
00:45:57I gotta cut Hondo.
00:45:58I don't know why even, because Paul, I would probably,
00:46:01I think I'm gonna cut Paul.
00:46:03Hondo was more.
00:46:04Make your pick, Nick, who are you going with?
00:46:05But like, listen, like, you know,
00:46:08Havacek and Pierce could play both positions.
00:46:12Havacek was a better defender, I think, right?
00:46:16And a better, probably a better leader to a degree.
00:46:19Paul got better as he got older.
00:46:21Yeah.
00:46:22Explosiveness, athleticism,
00:46:24all that stuff you gotta give to Paul.
00:46:26But, and clutch.
00:46:28You gotta kind of split between the two of them.
00:46:30They were both clutch.
00:46:33I'm more of a generation.
00:46:35I'm starting Russell.
00:46:36I'm more of the generation of Pierce.
00:46:38I'm about five years too young for Hondo.
00:46:42I never saw him play, so I'm gonna go with Pierce.
00:46:45Oh, you're gonna go with Pierce.
00:46:47Yeah, I'm gonna go with Pierce.
00:46:48So it's Russell, Pierce, Havacek.
00:46:51Yep, I'm gonna go Russell start, Pierce bench,
00:46:54and I'm gonna cut the legendary John Havacek.
00:46:58Well, you would have definitely cut Paul, right?
00:47:00You would have cut Paul, right?
00:47:03You would have cut Paul?
00:47:06Coop, could you hear me?
00:47:09You know, I'm having mic issues here.
00:47:11Yeah, I would have cut Pierce.
00:47:12I was thinking about Russell,
00:47:14but Paul Pierce could score.
00:47:16Paul Pierce could score,
00:47:17and it's just sacrilegious to cut Russell.
00:47:19But if you put Pierce and Havacek together
00:47:22against today's opponents,
00:47:23I think that'd be a damn good duo.
00:47:26Oh yeah, for sure.
00:47:27For sure.
00:47:28All right, back to me.
00:47:29Only reason I'm leaving Russell there
00:47:30is because he always talked highly of me as an announcer.
00:47:33Oh yeah, that's like Tommy Heinsohn.
00:47:35That's like Tommy Heinsohn is your number one player
00:47:38of all time because he loved you on the broadcast.
00:47:39Russell actually made me.
00:47:41He actually said, hey, watch this Cooper from the Lakers,
00:47:44man, watch him.
00:47:45Really?
00:47:45Yeah, people started watching and liked what they saw.
00:47:48And Bill Russell.
00:47:49When he was on the broadcast, he did that?
00:47:50Or was he just?
00:47:51When he was broadcasting on CBS.
00:47:52He was not very good,
00:47:54but he was good enough to point you out.
00:47:56That was great.
00:47:57How about him and Rick?
00:47:58That's all that matters.
00:47:59That's all we care about, right?
00:48:01That's why we love Tommy.
00:48:02All right, I got another one.
00:48:04Vince Carter, Michael Jordan, Dominic Wilkins.
00:48:08Ooh, that's a tough one.
00:48:10And I know you love Vince.
00:48:11And I know you love Dominic too.
00:48:14I love all three of those.
00:48:15I know, I know.
00:48:16I'm gonna have to start Mike.
00:48:18Of course.
00:48:19But Mike was something else, man.
00:48:21He started a whole new generation of high flyers
00:48:25and he started the whole fashion industry in the NBA,
00:48:28baggy pants and all that.
00:48:30And then he had his own style with the tongue hanging out.
00:48:32So all of that.
00:48:33And Nike.
00:48:34So I'm gonna go with Mike.
00:48:34You gotta give him Nike, he's Nike.
00:48:36Yeah, so I'm gonna start Mike.
00:48:42I'm gonna bench Dominique.
00:48:46I gotta go with the human highlight.
00:48:47Cause I would love just to see him dunk in the game.
00:48:51And I mean, Vince Carter is the same way.
00:48:53And Vince, my 24 Hall of Fame mate,
00:48:57we'll always be tied together in that.
00:48:59I have to cut Vince.
00:49:00It's gonna hurt though.
00:49:02But yeah, that is a good one there.
00:49:05That's a very, very good one.
00:49:06Because they're very, very similar.
00:49:07Start Mike, bench Dominique.
00:49:10Cause Dominique could score with the best of them.
00:49:13And then Vince, ooh, that's a tough one.
00:49:16Can I keep him on as a bench?
00:49:18Okay, well, all right, I got cut.
00:49:21Vince was an amazing in-game dunker,
00:49:23but people forget how powerful and amazing Dominique was
00:49:26as an in-game dunker.
00:49:28Who was better?
00:49:30Dominique could play the game of basketball, man.
00:49:32And-
00:49:33It was almost a Laker.
00:49:35The jumping ability.
00:49:37Ooh, I mean, Dominique could jump.
00:49:41Yeah, that's powerful.
00:49:42That's a good one.
00:49:44That's unfair, Nick.
00:49:45I call foul on that, man.
00:49:46You could tell I did my prep work today, Coop.
00:49:48I'm stumbling here.
00:49:50You could tell I did my prep work for this episode.
00:49:52Oh, you did.
00:49:53And I'm loving it, okay?
00:49:54All right, here's one.
00:49:55And you know, it wouldn't be one
00:49:56if I didn't throw the legend in it.
00:49:57So Larry Bird, Kevin Durant, and the Joker.
00:50:02That's a tough one.
00:50:05I'm gonna start Bird.
00:50:07Um, and only, that, because I got the ultimate respect.
00:50:12Now, I love Kevin Durant, and the Joker's good, too,
00:50:15but I gotta go Larry.
00:50:17Larry's gonna win you some games.
00:50:18And sometimes Larry will win the game
00:50:21as he did in the Detroit Piston set
00:50:23with a steal, playing defense.
00:50:25Larry steals the ball, throws it in, DJ score.
00:50:28So I'm starting Larry.
00:50:30I'm gonna, uh, bench KD, and the reason that,
00:50:38because KD has an unstoppable mid-range game.
00:50:42And, uh, KD can score.
00:50:45The Joker, it's hard to cut him.
00:50:48It is so hard to cut him.
00:50:49Solid all around.
00:50:51Joker's a high double-double, 28 points, 20 rebounds.
00:50:55But, um, I like the quickness of KD over him,
00:50:58and the Joker is a prodder.
00:51:00He's a Clydesdale.
00:51:02I need thoroughbreds out there.
00:51:03Larry's not a thoroughbred,
00:51:04but he's a good mid-horse runner.
00:51:07He's a, you know.
00:51:08And all that's interesting is, like, in that scenario,
00:51:12probably even being significantly shorter than KD,
00:51:16Bird's gonna post up more than Durant, probably.
00:51:18Oh, for sure.
00:51:20Which is.
00:51:21But Larry makes them other two just as good,
00:51:23because he's a better passer.
00:51:24For sure, no question, yeah.
00:51:26Yeah, I hate to cut the, cut the, uh.
00:51:29All right, let me give you one.
00:51:30Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
00:51:31Before you give me one.
00:51:32Do you remember in 87, being out West,
00:51:35waiting for the Celtics to either win or lose
00:51:39to the Pistons to play you guys?
00:51:42Do you remember the steal game?
00:51:43And what did you guys think when that happened?
00:51:46Like, because that was.
00:51:46When Larry stole the ball?
00:51:47Yeah.
00:51:48Oh, I thought, I mean,
00:51:50like I just described it by Johnny Moss.
00:51:52I mean, he just went berserk, because you know what?
00:51:55It looked very, very dim for the Celtics.
00:51:57Very, I remember watching.
00:51:59Very dim.
00:52:00And you didn't really know what was gonna happen.
00:52:03And all Detroit had to do was inbound the ball.
00:52:08Now, the funny part about that is,
00:52:10that's all we had to do in 1984.
00:52:12James Worthy taking the ball out.
00:52:14All they do is get it in.
00:52:15Yep.
00:52:16Gerald Henson runs in and steals it.
00:52:17And then, so it was just, that's the Celtic.
00:52:21That's the Celtic mystique.
00:52:23That's the Celtic aura at Boston Garden.
00:52:27Magical things happen for them.
00:52:29And that is truly an arena where you say,
00:52:33never say die till the horn blows.
00:52:35Yep.
00:52:36And when Larry stole that ball, man, it was incredible.
00:52:38And the amazing part is, he had the ability.
00:52:42To find DJ.
00:52:43To hang in the air.
00:52:44Yeah.
00:52:45You talking about Larry Bird hanging in the air?
00:52:46Hanging in the air, yep.
00:52:46Hanging in the air and find DJ.
00:52:48And DJ lays it in.
00:52:49And a tough shot from Dennis Johnson.
00:52:52That could have easily been missed.
00:52:54Yeah.
00:52:54It's sad, but that mystique and that aura
00:52:57that you talk about, if I'm to mention it to fans today,
00:53:01they're like, what the fuck are you talking about?
00:53:03Celtics fans.
00:53:04They don't even understand what that building meant.
00:53:08They need to go back because that building, man.
00:53:10Take this for instance.
00:53:13Don Nelson, playing the Lakers, shoot a shot.
00:53:16The shot hits the heel of the rim and goes, what?
00:53:20Eight feet above the backboard?
00:53:23And then this shot comes back down, listen,
00:53:25without hitting the net.
00:53:27Yep, yes.
00:53:28That's the mystique and the lore of Boston Garden, man.
00:53:30Yep, yep.
00:53:31Ah, and Pierce had, Pierce had very similar
00:53:35against LeBron in 2007, eight.
00:53:39In game six, they were, I want to say they were down one.
00:53:44He hit the first free throw to tie it.
00:53:46There was like next to no time on the clock.
00:53:49The second free throw hit the back of the rim,
00:53:51went all the way up and dropped right back down.
00:53:54And after the game, Pierce said, I think red lit.
00:53:57I heard red, I smelled cigar smoke when I hit that shot
00:54:01because red lit the cigar.
00:54:03I don't know what it is about Boston Garden.
00:54:05Some miraculous things happened in that arena, man.
00:54:08Yep, yep.
00:54:09And allowed them to be that, but it's still carrying on
00:54:12today because, you know, the last year Celtic teams
00:54:16had a lot of close calls.
00:54:17They did.
00:54:18The Garden.
00:54:19Especially against Indiana.
00:54:20Indiana, there were some, Jalen Brown
00:54:22hit some miraculous shots.
00:54:24Yep.
00:54:25At the Garden to tie, put that game into overtime,
00:54:27win the game.
00:54:28It was great last year.
00:54:29All right, we got two more, Coop.
00:54:31Oh, you have one for me.
00:54:32Got one for you.
00:54:33All right, go ahead.
00:54:34Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
00:54:40Oh, come on.
00:54:41I gotta start Kareem.
00:54:43No, I gotta start Magic
00:54:45because he can do every single thing.
00:54:47I gotta bench Kareem and I gotta cut.
00:54:49Big game.
00:54:50Now, I hate to do it, but I gotta do it.
00:54:52Who you gonna cut?
00:54:52You gonna cut Kareem or Magic?
00:54:55Come on.
00:54:57That's like saying Bird, Parrish, or McHale, right?
00:55:00Big game, James Worthy don't get his name
00:55:03by being a little guy.
00:55:04I know it, I know it.
00:55:05All right, your turn.
00:55:06This one's gonna be tough for you.
00:55:08Moses Malone.
00:55:11I just wanna see your face
00:55:12because that's your boy.
00:55:13Rest in peace.
00:55:14Tim Duncan, Kevin Garnett.
00:55:18I'm starting Moses Malone.
00:55:19Really?
00:55:20One of the most feared rebounders in the game today
00:55:22and Mo was like, fo-fo-fo, book him.
00:55:25And I love Moses Malone.
00:55:28I love Moses Malone.
00:55:32Duncan or Garnett?
00:55:35I know what I would do.
00:55:36Now listen, I gotta go Tim Duncan.
00:55:39This the fundamental because Tim could do it all, man.
00:55:41And I love Kevin Garnett if nothing else
00:55:45because he looks like me.
00:55:46Dark, bald-headed, and Kevin Garnett was a feared,
00:55:49feared player.
00:55:50Fierce, yep.
00:55:51You know, he really came into his own at Boston.
00:55:54I think he was being carved in Minnesota.
00:55:57He was being carved out to be the Celtic leader
00:56:00and champion that he became.
00:56:02He became like the modern day Russell.
00:56:04That's a tough one.
00:56:04Tim Duncan because, man, Tim was just so solid.
00:56:07And you know, all those players weren't gonna do
00:56:10the wrong thing.
00:56:11All of them are great teammates.
00:56:13But Moses Malone was a high double-double.
00:56:1630 points, 30 rebounds.
00:56:1830 points, 25.
00:56:20MVP.
00:56:20Moses used to get an offensive rebound,
00:56:23throw the ball, get an offensive rebound,
00:56:25throw the ball.
00:56:26And somebody asked me, said, I gotta pad my stats, man.
00:56:29Because I know I'm gonna score.
00:56:31I gotta pad my stats for rebounds.
00:56:32So I love Moses Malone.
00:56:34Oh yeah, rest in peace.
00:56:35And man, you want to talk about longevity.
00:56:37The funny part about that is I talked to Moses
00:56:39about a week before he passed.
00:56:40He used to call me.
00:56:42Hey Coop, how you doing, man?
00:56:43And we would just talk about things, you know,
00:56:45and anything.
00:56:46And yeah, I really miss him.
00:56:48But Moses, by starter.
00:56:51Longevity.
00:56:52Longevity with Moses.
00:56:54I mean, Moses played so long and was productive for so long.
00:56:58He wasn't the player he was in Houston or Philly.
00:57:00But he was worth it.
00:57:02I used to hate, and I would hate this
00:57:05because James Worthy was a sweater.
00:57:06But Moses Malone would be dripping sweat.
00:57:08And he'd get the basketball, hold it here,
00:57:10and then he'd throw it out to you.
00:57:11It's like a sponge when you get the ball.
00:57:14It's a ball soaking wet.
00:57:16No, but yeah.
00:57:17What about Ewing?
00:57:17What about Ewing talking about sweat?
00:57:19Patrick Ewing.
00:57:20Oh yeah.
00:57:21No one sweat more than Patrick.
00:57:22I don't know what's wrong with you guys.
00:57:23That's a grand or something.
00:57:23I sweat it, but not like that.
00:57:24You got me drenched.
00:57:26No, you L.A. boys glowed.
00:57:27You didn't sweat.
00:57:29You said we glowed.
00:57:30You glowed.
00:57:31You had glow.
00:57:32You didn't sweat.
00:57:33Your last cluster here, Coop.
00:57:35I don't even know how you'd pick this one.
00:57:37Steph,
00:57:39Shy.
00:57:41Steph who?
00:57:42Steph Curry.
00:57:44Shy.
00:57:45No, Shy.
00:57:48Alexander, how do you say, I can't say his name.
00:57:51Oh, the kid from OKC?
00:57:53Yes, yes.
00:57:54Or he's an MVP candidate right now.
00:57:56I mean, it's early, but he's good.
00:57:58Or Pete Maravich.
00:58:01I'm going Steph Curry, starting Steph.
00:58:04I'm going to, and that's Steph can score.
00:58:08He's a flat out scorer.
00:58:08One of the best scorers in the NBA.
00:58:10And I'm not afraid to say that anymore.
00:58:12Steph Curry is the best shooter the NBA has ever seen.
00:58:14I agree.
00:58:17I'm going to,
00:58:20I'm going with Pete Maravich
00:58:22because people don't realize how good
00:58:24pistol Pete Maravich was going all the way back
00:58:27from LSU being coached by his dad
00:58:29and then coming to the NBA.
00:58:31He was probably one of the, he was magic.
00:58:34Isaiah Thomas.
00:58:35Tiny.
00:58:37He flashed before it was flashy.
00:58:38And I mean, look at some old films
00:58:41where Pete Maravich could play and he could score.
00:58:43Plus I like his floppy socks.
00:58:45You know what, I almost changed my look back then.
00:58:47Those long socks used to be around his ankle and stuff.
00:58:50I used to dress like that until I got my scissors back.
00:58:53I wasn't going to play like that.
00:58:54But anyway, and then I have to cut
00:58:58Chi Gildress, a great young player,
00:59:01up and coming in about maybe 10 years.
00:59:04If he continues to do what he's going to do,
00:59:07that may change if you were to ask me about him.
00:59:09But right now I got to go with Steph.
00:59:12Pistol.
00:59:13Any good pistol Pete stories?
00:59:16No, because I played against him at the end of his career
00:59:19when he was at Utah.
00:59:20And it was a hell of himself then.
00:59:23He had a lot of injuries and stuff like that.
00:59:26But again, pistol was,
00:59:28I think the best move I've ever seen anybody play.
00:59:30He's playing against the Lakers.
00:59:32He's coming down and he's dribbling the ball
00:59:34and he's just dribbling and all of a sudden
00:59:35this guy's going like this and the ball dribbling.
00:59:37Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:59:38And then he ends up tapping it.
00:59:40Yeah, tapping it.
00:59:40Kind of like Bird did.
00:59:41Bird did it, yep.
00:59:42I had never seen anybody play the game like,
00:59:44not even Walt Frazier who had that kind of flair.
00:59:46But this kid here, pistol Pete and the long beetle cut,
00:59:50you know, his hair is in his eyes almost.
00:59:53Like dude, put your hair back, wear a headband.
00:59:55White boy and a white boy, you know,
00:59:56you almost feel like he's indelible.
01:00:00Like he's going to live on
01:00:01because so many, I don't want to say better players
01:00:04because he was really good,
01:00:05but so many more charismatic or pronounced players
01:00:09have been forgotten who won championships.
01:00:12So you know what I'm saying?
01:00:13Never forgotten, but don't get mentioned much.
01:00:15Pistol Pete, I don't know if it's the nickname,
01:00:18the legend of him or whatever.
01:00:20I think kids 20 years from now are going to be out
01:00:24in the ballpark saying, oh, it was a pistol Pete move.
01:00:27You know what I mean?
01:00:28That's because he's white chocolate.
01:00:30Nick, he's white chocolate, man.
01:00:31He played, he was white, but he played like a brother.
01:00:33Played like a brother.
01:00:34Yeah, man, pistol Pete.
01:00:36And just, I mean, had a weird shot.
01:00:38Weird shot.
01:00:39He covered his face almost.
01:00:40But I mean, a phenomenal player,
01:00:42even greater person had an opportunity
01:00:44to talk to him one time.
01:00:45And how you doing, Michael?
01:00:46Sweetheart, right?
01:00:47Oh, hey Pete, I'm eyes big as everything
01:00:49and kind of looking at this guy.
01:00:51He was just so humble, humble and very, very,
01:00:53you know what, he's a little bit insecure about himself.
01:00:56And again, that came on with his upbringing
01:00:59and probably being coached by his dad, who was crazy.
01:01:02Right, right.
01:01:03And that's why I don't coach my kids.
01:01:04I want my kids sane.
01:01:05But no, Press was a great coach.
01:01:09And again, having a son, it was lucky.
01:01:10But again, Pete Baravich, people forget about him,
01:01:14but don't sleep on him, man.
01:01:15Good story that Max tells.
01:01:17And I know it's true because other people have,
01:01:19Corobola Max tells true stories,
01:01:22but I've heard him tell it to like Chief
01:01:24and him talk about it, Parrish, right?
01:01:26So Bird is a rookie
01:01:30and Maravich is finishing his career in Boston.
01:01:36Pete, I have to remember it right.
01:01:38Pete is dribbling the ball up court,
01:01:40puts it into Larry in the post.
01:01:42Larry gets double teamed and forces up a shot.
01:01:47Bill Fitch calls timeout.
01:01:49Celtics are walking back to the bench
01:01:51and Pistol looks at Bird and says,
01:01:53I was wide open.
01:01:54You gotta pass that shot back to that.
01:01:57You gotta pass that back to me for that wide open shot.
01:02:00And he said, Pete, if you weren't so fucking washed up,
01:02:02you wouldn't be wide open.
01:02:04I'll take it again.
01:02:05A rookie to Pistol Pete Maravich.
01:02:11That is classic, right?
01:02:13That's a classic story.
01:02:15Max tells it so well.
01:02:17I'm glad I got out of the game
01:02:18before anybody said that to me.
01:02:19Well, Coop, this is fun this week.
01:02:23This is fun.
01:02:24Do you have anything else before we wrap up?
01:02:26You know what?
01:02:27That's it.
01:02:28Another great edition, episode.
01:02:30This is fresh and brand new out the can, baby.
01:02:33We're getting ready to send it to you that way.
01:02:35But again, I promise you in the future,
01:02:37we're gonna have some really special guests.
01:02:40I got two and one that you don't like.
01:02:42I'm gonna say Tim Hardaway.
01:02:43You don't like him for whatever reason, Nick.
01:02:45I'll just stay out of the game.
01:02:46But I love Tim Hardaway.
01:02:47And he's probably gonna come on the show
01:02:50so I'm gonna get him.
01:02:51But we're gonna have some more guests come on
01:02:52because we gotta give them S, B, C.
01:02:56We gotta do Dick Bavetta.
01:02:57Start, bench, or cut.
01:02:58Could you imagine Dick doing start, bench, cut?
01:03:01He'd be lost.
01:03:01That'd be great.
01:03:02That's for sure.
01:03:04We should do, wait a minute.
01:03:05We should do senior citizen start, bench, cut.
01:03:07We'll do Bob Ryan.
01:03:09We'll do the guy, the writer out in LA
01:03:11that has been around for a million years.
01:03:13We'll do Bavetta and see how they do with start, bench, cut.
01:03:16Yeah, let's do that.
01:03:17We're gonna get some people on here.
01:03:18That'd be funny.
01:03:19That's gonna be our new thing.
01:03:20Nick, have a good one, man.
01:03:22Enjoy this Sunday.
01:03:23A lot of football to be watched.
01:03:24Yeah, baby.
01:03:25And I'm gonna keep my eye on the Celtics
01:03:26and see if they can continue
01:03:27this so-called impressive streak.
01:03:30Oh, I'm gonna keep my eye on those Lakers, too.
01:03:32We outta here.
01:03:33All right, love you.
01:03:34Love you, bro.
