00:00:00Can you say hard hats folks, hard hats, lunch pail, steel tool, boots?
00:00:08Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:10Look at this boomer right here.
00:00:12You've just got so much talent here.
00:00:14Somebody said we need to apologize for Jalen.
00:00:16Can I pull the John?
00:00:17What are we apologizing for?
00:00:18What did we say?
00:00:19What did we do?
00:00:20What's, there it is Sharad.
00:00:30What's going on everybody?
00:00:31What's up?
00:00:32It is the Garden Report, we're back with the Garden Report post game show, an actual post
00:00:37game show following the Celtics first summer league game, a loss to the Miami Heat, 119-114.
00:00:45Bobby was calling it sloppy on Twitter, I think it was wildly entertaining.
00:00:50To score this many points in a 40 minute game is nuts, defense optional tonight, but
00:00:54it doesn't matter.
00:00:55Scores don't matter.
00:00:57Really not much matters here other than snapshots of players that you're watching, that you're
00:01:03hoping may contribute in the near future or not too distant future with the Celtics, who's
00:01:11a keeper, who's not.
00:01:12I was about to quit.
00:01:13I was ready to quit on JD Davison before the game started and he pulls me back in.
00:01:18So we'll get everybody's takes and all of these guys, you can't tell it from their backgrounds
00:01:21because they had to scurry off into corners of the Thomas Mack, is that where you guys
00:01:27are?
00:01:28Yep.
00:01:29Thomas Mack Center.
00:01:30They're all in Vegas.
00:01:31I'm here.
00:01:32Okay.
00:01:33I'm all alone.
00:01:34I feel like Jimmy Toscano.
00:01:35I'm not invited to the cool kids party, but these guys are all in Las Vegas, taking it
00:01:42all in.
00:01:43So we'll start with the people on the scene.
00:01:45We'll start with Noah Dalzell here, Celtics blog, and so many other places where you catch
00:01:52her work and obviously a great deal here on CLNS Media, but Noah, is this your first summer
00:01:57league action?
00:01:58Did you go last year too?
00:01:59No, this is my first one.
00:02:01First one.
00:02:02So what's the number one takeaway?
00:02:03And again, we're looking at the first and second year guys, obviously, to see what you're
00:02:08going to get out of that.
00:02:09Anything stand out to you that you were particularly looking to see that you thought was, okay,
00:02:14here's my takeaway.
00:02:15Yeah.
00:02:16I would say that the player that stood out to me the most was Jaden Springer and just
00:02:19what he was able to do on both ends and just look really comfortable defensively.
00:02:24Once he got on Hawkeyes in the second half, he was really impacting the game and he's
00:02:27somebody that the Celtics traded for because they really believe in him and they see him
00:02:31being a potential piece here.
00:02:33And I thought that he looked just really calm and cool collected and he's just 21.
00:02:37So he feels like he's been around for a long time, but he's still a really young guy and
00:02:41he's not nearly where he could potentially be in a few years.
00:02:44So he stood out quite a bit, that Shireman as well, but I'll let someone else touch on
00:02:47him.
00:02:48But yeah, Springer is the guy that I think from, from everybody tonight just looked really
00:02:51ready and kind of complete.
00:02:53Yeah.
00:02:54Bobby.
00:02:55Yeah.
00:02:56His second half was pretty encouraging and talk about another guy, John, who you're on
00:02:59the borderline of like, is he going to make it, is he going to last here?
00:03:02And he showed up in that second half, he showed shot creation ability, which was pretty surprising.
00:03:08And then of course he's doing all the defensive stuff you expect from him.
00:03:12So this was a image saving kind of performance for him coming out of a season where he didn't
00:03:17get involved much and went into pockets of garbage time and different moments where you
00:03:21saw him didn't show out a ton, especially offensively.
00:03:25He just looked so offensively limited after he arrived from Philadelphia.
00:03:28So that was definitely the story of this one in terms of individual performances, obviously
00:03:34JD hand in hand with him.
00:03:36But you feel like spring is probably ahead of him in the organizational hierarchy, just
00:03:40based on their contracts alone right now.
00:03:42But that could change.
00:03:43And they both had pretty good games here.
00:03:45Shireman.
00:03:46The first impression was aggressiveness.
00:03:48He got a couple shots off early.
00:03:50They weren't pretty shots.
00:03:51They were pretty bad misses and he stayed aggressive.
00:03:54I thought, and it was a nice floater that got him going to passing.
00:03:58He leaned into that when the shot wasn't falling, which is everything we talked about with him
00:04:03that he's not just a shooter.
00:04:05So it was nice for him to be able to get, it was like three assists in a minute there.
00:04:09That got him going offensively and defensively, you know, I asked him after the game, how
00:04:13he felt about how he did there.
00:04:14And he said, given that he had a guard, Jaime Hock is pretty good.
00:04:18I like that.
00:04:19They did that too, which is like sink or swim, go guard and NBA player, because it doesn't
00:04:23really matter what you do against anyone else.
00:04:25And you know, a couple of times, I mean, it's, it's Hawkeyes.
00:04:28He's a frigging first, first team, all rookie player last year.
00:04:32He really shouldn't, he shouldn't be here.
00:04:34You know, we were saying like, it's unfair to have a guy like K to hear Hawkeyes shouldn't
00:04:38be within a mile of this.
00:04:39I know he's only going to play a couple of games, but I don't know what he's out here.
00:04:42You know, Brandon Miller's playing too, isn't he?
00:04:44Yeah.
00:04:45I believe so.
00:04:46There's a couple of guys that didn't expect to be playing summer league that are playing
00:04:49summer league, but whatever.
00:04:50Yeah.
00:04:51It's better to have that right on a Jersey and jumped in.
00:04:53I know.
00:04:54Right.
00:04:55He's the, he was a veteran presence on the bench.
00:04:56It's better to have that, you know, someone like that out there spring or such an interesting
00:05:00case because of the fourth year in the league, you know, still trying to prove himself at
00:05:05summer league and a guy you're, you're talking to, you're still talking about potential,
00:05:09but he's so frigging young.
00:05:10He's 21.
00:05:11You've got your two rookies that are going to be 24 during the regular season.
00:05:14Springer's still 21 years old.
00:05:15You know, Jordan Walsh is a teenager.
00:05:17He's only 19, you know, so like, um, those guys you're, you have to recognize that there
00:05:23is more time, you know, even, uh, even, uh, the, the three youngest guys on the roster
00:05:28are right.
00:05:29Our Springer, uh, Walsh and JD.
00:05:32And you know, like I said, is JD's entering his third year Springer and his fourth.
00:05:37So, um, you know, it's, we've got to remember to be patient with these guys.
00:05:41They're still, they're still young pups.
00:05:42Gerard, what do you got?
00:05:44Well, that patient you talk about, John, it's really important when you look at just the
00:05:48way this Celtics roster is constructed, you have the luxury of being patient with them
00:05:52because the positions that most of those guys play, you already have not just good players
00:05:57in those positions, but good, talented, proven, established talent that you don't have to
00:06:02rush a JD Davidson out there to, to play for you right away.
00:06:07And I thought this was really, to me that the two guys that stood out, you know, Springer
00:06:10obviously did a lot of good things, but I love what I saw from JD, from a shot making
00:06:14standpoint.
00:06:15Uh, I think that has been the one area of his game that really hasn't quite evolved
00:06:20as well as, as I thought it would at this point.
00:06:23And you know, the, the rookie, you know, Baylor, the thing I liked about his game was the playmaking.
00:06:27I mean, he had like six assists, uh, you know, from the wing position for the Southeast to
00:06:33get six assists.
00:06:34We don't see that very often.
00:06:36And yeah, granted it's summer league, but it speaks to his ability to recognize how
00:06:40to get the ball in the hands of others who can make some shots and make some plays.
00:06:44So I was really impressed with just his, just feel for the game and recognizing how to get
00:06:49others involved.
00:06:50And, and JD is shot making, uh, I thought was really big and Springer to your point,
00:06:54John, the fact that he's been in the league for years, I would hope that in summer league,
00:06:58you would be able to show out a little bit.
00:07:00I will.
00:07:01Yeah.
00:07:02Well, I think also, you know, with Springer, he's trying to, I love, by the way, the charm
00:07:06and the best picture we have is him with a frigging suit on suit and tie.
00:07:09Um, we got no playing, we got no playing picture.
00:07:12Um, there he is.
00:07:14That guy.
00:07:15Yeah.
00:07:16Um, yeah, Springer is probably like, I do more than play defense and it is so interesting
00:07:23for the auditioning things.
00:07:25It's like, if you're a Celtics fan, you're really only interested in, in, I mean, you're
00:07:30interested in everything I guess, but you know, you want to see Charmin, right?
00:07:34You guys, the first, first round draft pick of the, uh, Brad Stevens, Aaron, it's a guy
00:07:38with a pedigree and you're hoping you might be able to cash in on whatever he can contribute.
00:07:44Kind of soon ish.
00:07:45You kind of wonder, can he get in there?
00:07:46Can he work his way into, if not rotational minutes, top of the stay ready crew sort of
00:07:52situation.
00:07:53Can he play?
00:07:54Can he have some spot duty?
00:07:55Is there a way that he's got eight, 10, is he, does he get Peyton Pritchard minutes consistently
00:07:59this year playing at that wing position, uh, you know, or the off guard.
00:08:03That's what you kind of want to see.
00:08:04But then you have all these other guys who are like, don't you forget about me?
00:08:07You know, like, and that Davidson is one of them.
00:08:09I was talking about him earlier.
00:08:11I was about to tweet at the beginning of the game.
00:08:13Like, I think I've seen enough of JD Davidson to know that I don't want to see any more
00:08:16of JD Davidson.
00:08:17Uh, that's kind of mean, but it's just simply being like, I think I'd made up my mind.
00:08:22And then he's out there like, no man, I can play, you know, and he signs this two way
00:08:26and he wants to come back.
00:08:27So everybody else there wants to show out Charmin is probably the guy with the least
00:08:30amount that he has to show because he has that learning curve.
00:08:34He's day one, you know, game one year one, he's just starting, you know, he's supposed
00:08:39to have, you know, take some lumps along the way and his spot is secure.
00:08:42He's a first round draft pick and they're going to give him time and they're going to
00:08:46try to develop.
00:08:47Some of those other guys are kind of fighting for their NBA lives and some sort of relevancy
00:08:51at this point, which is like, I could be playing overseas in a year if I don't start showing
00:08:55people that I belong here.
00:08:56And I think those guys kind of fall into that, uh, into that category, which is, Hey,
00:09:00you know, look at me.
00:09:01So good on, good on them.
00:09:03Good on Davison and good on, uh, good on, uh, you know, Springer for, for coming in
00:09:07there.
00:09:08Uh, other takeaways here again, Cato, we said would be a little bit unfair, you know, in
00:09:13this sort of summer league action, Bobby, I'm not going to make this a Cato cornet show
00:09:20right off the bat, but, oh boy, oh boy.
00:09:25What's going to happen this year?
00:09:27What's going to happen this year?
00:09:28What's your prediction today on what happens rotationally this year?
00:09:32I, cause I mean, I know they need cheap players and you know, Cato could be roster filler
00:09:37and he could spend the rest of his NBA life in the 10 to 15, you know, range on an NBA
00:09:42roster, or maybe somebody who was coming off the bench on a, on a weaker team, but he's
00:09:47fighting for minutes.
00:09:48He's fighting with one guy here, you know, did he look any different to you?
00:09:51And again, obviously the competition is what it is.
00:09:55Yeah, he looked pretty similar.
00:09:56In fact, especially early, a little disappointed with the finishing couple, couple of plays
00:10:01around the room where you just kind of tell us what Cato did wrong today.
00:10:04Yes.
00:10:05Tell us what he did wrong tonight.
00:10:06I don't think he had an amazing game.
00:10:08There were definitely some plays around the room where you, yeah, you got to finish that
00:10:11in there.
00:10:12And there was a lot of spacing issues in this game.
00:10:14So I'm sure that played into it.
00:10:16And then defensively, you're looking for a little bit more there in terms of room protection.
00:10:21So he went out there and did his thing.
00:10:25And he's, this is kind of who he is right now.
00:10:26And, you know, I think you're looking for him to improve a little bit on the defensive
00:10:29end.
00:10:30You're looking for him to probably be closer to a 70% finisher.
00:10:32And that's where Luke was last year, right at 70%, which is, I think the number you need
00:10:38to be at, if you're going to be running into the room, pretty loose off the playmakers
00:10:41on the team.
00:10:42And there's still just a few too many plays where he's just kind of juggling it up, tipping
00:10:47it in and unable to finish in there when he's in the lane off, I drop off or whatever it
00:10:53might be there.
00:10:55He's by himself.
00:10:56He's going to flush it in.
00:10:57And there was that one play early where he dunked on Hawkins.
00:10:58That was amazing.
00:10:59And the offensive rebound is great.
00:11:01That's the one thing I think, you know, Joe's going to look at and be intrigued by when
00:11:05it comes to him because, you know, Shyman was saying it and we heard it all year with
00:11:08them.
00:11:09They need offensive rebound, especially with O'Shea potentially not being here.
00:11:13He was the best out of that front court crew in terms of that.
00:11:15So Kada has the edge in that area over any of the, he's also got magnet hands, like he's
00:11:22the guy, so ridiculously magnetic, magnetic hands, and that helps with the rebounding
00:11:28a ton because how many guys last year, like Cornette, and this isn't throwing shade at
00:11:32Cornette.
00:11:33I think a lot of people do it.
00:11:34The tip, the tip rebound, like I can't rip this thing out of the sky.
00:11:37I'm going to just kind of keep it in play and maybe direct it towards, you know, safe,
00:11:41you know, a safe landing is a really strong rebounder, but it's on the catches too.
00:11:46Like he's, that's a couple of things I like.
00:11:47I agree.
00:11:48He's still a little loose and sloppy and sometimes can look lost out there.
00:11:51And I also will think, you know, these guys don't know each other and they won't know
00:11:58each other.
00:11:59The majority of them, they'll never see each other again, you know, in a little while.
00:12:02But those are a couple of things that really stand out to me with him.
00:12:06I don't know.
00:12:07Noah?
00:12:08Yeah.
00:12:09I didn't think Kada looked bad.
00:12:10He had a couple of plays that were a little bit out of character to me, but I mean, he
00:12:13still finished with 20 points in 23 minutes, six offensive rebounds.
00:12:16Like, you know, I thought he kind of got increasingly comfortable.
00:12:20Early on, he looked a little rough, but I watched a lot of Kada when he was in Maine
00:12:24last year and he was, he was too good for Maine when he was in the rhythm.
00:12:27Like when he was playing consecutive games with Maine, he was just, he was very dominant.
00:12:31You could very much tell he didn't belong there.
00:12:33And so I don't know.
00:12:35I do think he's going to be a part of the rotation and I feel like everybody's wondering
00:12:38about him and Luke and who's going to have the upper hand.
00:12:41I could see it going either way, but I also could see it just being really situational
00:12:44and them using both of, both of them kind of at times, but I mean, they gave him a three
00:12:48year contract.
00:12:49So I think that they view him as a piece, you know, part of the future and, and you
00:12:52know, tonight wasn't like a statement game from him in summer.
00:12:55Like, I think we'll see him have better games, but he was really solid for what was required
00:12:59of him.
00:13:00And like, go ahead, Bobby, go ahead.
00:13:03At this phase of his career, Sharan, Noah and I were talking about this earlier.
00:13:07You want some of these guys, especially the guys who have played NBA minutes so far to
00:13:10look like they don't belong here.
00:13:12Obviously that's what Hawkins did here tonight.
00:13:14Yeah.
00:13:16But he didn't look like he didn't belong here, if you know what I mean.
00:13:21Kata is a guy that is going to be a borderline rotation guy and borderline rotation guys.
00:13:28I think back to Noah's point, I think they are kind of in that Mendoza space where they're
00:13:33too good for the G league, but they're not quite good enough to be an NBA regular.
00:13:37And I think as the season progresses, I think he's going to inch closer and closer to being
00:13:42an NBA regular, because there are certain things that he does that help you win games,
00:13:46that you don't have anyone on your roster exceptional in those areas.
00:13:50As we pointed out, he's got incredibly strong hands.
00:13:53I don't think they have anyone with stronger hands when it comes to rebounding the ball
00:13:57than Kata.
00:13:58I don't.
00:14:00And his ability, again, very active on the offensive boards.
00:14:04That's something that, once again, they don't have a lot of guys who are really good at
00:14:08that other than maybe what Peyton Pritchard, Drew Holiday, were probably the two best
00:14:12offensive rebounding guys, and they play in the backcourt.
00:14:14So I do think as the season progresses, he's going to showcase what he does well.
00:14:19And I think ultimately, those qualities are what's going to eventually allow him to surpass
00:14:25Luke.
00:14:26But obviously, at the beginning of training camp, Luke should be your number three center.
00:14:30I don't know if he's-
00:14:31Well, that's the problem.
00:14:32Because we don't know-
00:14:33Who's your third center?
00:14:35Who is your, is this without Porzingis though?
00:14:37That's what we don't know.
00:14:39So that's the problem.
00:14:40I think so.
00:14:41I think they'll start Tillman and have Luke as a backup, I think.
00:14:44Yeah.
00:14:45The reason I'm interested in Kata is I'm curious how that's going to play out.
00:14:48Because you think, especially if you're not doing Al on the back-to-backs, you're going
00:14:51to have nights where Tillman is starting in the Al role.
00:14:54And then someone's coming in as your second center, Cornette.
00:14:58And then you might still be getting, you might have to switch those minutes.
00:15:03I think of all of the guys we're seeing tonight in this summer league action, the guy with
00:15:11the closest path to minutes is probably Kata.
00:15:15Just based on what you're going to have in terms of needs when the season starts.
00:15:19Not just needs.
00:15:20But I just think, again, he was the one guy who, when you look at his numbers, they didn't
00:15:25come as a surprise.
00:15:27Because he, in theory, he should be playing this well against this level of competition.
00:15:30Whereas Springer, this was a kind of an eye-opening type of game for him.
00:15:34Because we really haven't seen him do much, particularly when it comes to shot making.
00:15:37And the same thing goes for JD.
00:15:38So for those guys, their play was very much of a revelation of sorts as to maybe these
00:15:44guys can help a team win.
00:15:46Maybe they can play their way into, maybe not the rotation, but certainly guys that
00:15:51they can turn to in a pinch from time to time.
00:15:54But Kata's the guy that, again, he has the best shot at being in a regular rotation.
00:15:59I don't think he's done it, certainly he didn't do enough in this game.
00:16:01And I don't think he'll do enough in the summer to leapfrog himself past Luke.
00:16:06But training camp, a good summer league can give him maybe a little extra boost confidence
00:16:11wise going into training camp to compete with Luke.
00:16:13Because without presenting us in a mix, him and Luke are going to be competing for minutes.
00:16:18That's not going to change.
00:16:20So again, I just think Kata has some skills and abilities that this team sorely lacks
00:16:25that they may look to tap into more as the season progresses.
00:16:30I also just think in summer league, there's only so many assumptions that we can really
00:16:35draw because we're seeing everybody play in a different role than they're going to
00:16:38have during the year.
00:16:40He's taking 15 shots in 20 minutes.
00:16:42He's not going to be that involved offensively next year.
00:16:46Someone like Springer, who I'm really high on, but he won finals MVP in the G League
00:16:50two years ago.
00:16:51So this isn't coming out of nowhere, the ability to dominate at this level and to play really
00:16:54well.
00:16:55He's already shown his flashes of that.
00:16:56So a lot of it is just seeing bits and pieces, but I do think it's still very speculative.
00:17:02That's the tough part of seeing people play well or not play well.
00:17:05I was thinking, how would Tillman look out here tonight?
00:17:07Would he be dominating?
00:17:08I don't know if he's the kind of player that would be dominating in this environment, but
00:17:11obviously we all feel pretty good about his ability to be kind of highest in the post-rotation.
00:17:16So that's part of the challenge, at least for my end, of just watching these guys play.
00:17:18Do you think Cornette would have dominated?
00:17:19Oh boy.
00:17:20Do you think?
00:17:21I think so.
00:17:22Do you think Cornette would have dominated tonight?
00:17:23I don't think so.
00:17:24Sherrod, who was that lefty that they drafted that we tried to hold on to for a while back,
00:17:30maybe 10, 12 years ago?
00:17:33God.
00:17:34He was like 15th, 16th pick or overall.
00:17:40Are you talking about Dwayne Johnson?
00:17:42No, no, no.
00:17:43Dwayne Johnson.
00:17:44No, forget it.
00:17:45Anyway.
00:17:46Oh man, it's going to eat me alive.
00:17:47Not Mario.
00:17:48Not Romeo.
00:17:49No.
00:17:50Say it ain't so.
00:17:51James Young.
00:17:52James Young.
00:17:53We held on to him for a while.
00:17:54I think it was like year, he played Vegas year three and couldn't dominate and it was
00:18:01like, that's it.
00:18:02Pack it up.
00:18:04So some guys, at least you can dominate at this level, which is good.
00:18:07But we talked about this last show, it's those four A guys, right?
00:18:12It's they're right on that line.
00:18:13They're too good for one, but not good enough for the other.
00:18:16You wonder would they crack it, which is again, why not to be like a jerk about it, but like
00:18:20I didn't really care about Springer's performance or Davison's performance.
00:18:26I really only cared about Shireman because I'm just like, that's where my hopes are pinned
00:18:29right now on that.
00:18:32Did you get a gem there?
00:18:33Did you get a good guy?
00:18:34And that's why I was like watching that intently.
00:18:36It's almost like, I'm not going to say a waste, but it's like, okay, do I need to see another
00:18:42game where Springer takes 15, 16 shots and scores 20 points?
00:18:47I don't know, because I don't know that I have such high hopes of what he's going to
00:18:51do there.
00:18:52And Noah pointed out this isn't going to be his role.
00:18:54If he's his path to NBA minutes is not going to look anything close to this.
00:18:59He's just going to come in and try to D up and stay out of the way and knock down an
00:19:01open shot.
00:19:02If he, if he has it, but I don't know.
00:19:04Yeah, he, he has the straightest path to a role this year.
00:19:07I feel like even more so than Kata, because right now you don't have two wings on and
00:19:12you're certainly going to be resting Tatum and Brown and other guys throughout the course
00:19:15of this year.
00:19:16And there might be some injuries, whatever else.
00:19:17And if it almost feels like in terms of what they have right now on the roster, he's the
00:19:21next man up at that wing spot.
00:19:23If he can show something here, Kata, there's several guys in front of him and who knows
00:19:27if O'Shea is going to be back in that mix here too.
00:19:30But I would actually point to him and, you know, back to your point about what we're
00:19:33watching here, John, when I called the performance sloppy or the game overall sloppy, it's the
00:19:40fact that you didn't see that Celtic structure because you know, no one knows even being
00:19:45up in Maine.
00:19:46You see like a structure that looks like the Celtics, they're getting up the threes, they're
00:19:50running the offensive sets.
00:19:51They're playing with that kind of format offensively.
00:19:55This game is 10 guys in the paint and people are running into each other and they're trying
00:19:59to get the ball up the court and they're struggling to do so.
00:20:02Like you don't see that 114 points, which is, which was crazy, but yeah, that was more
00:20:07like that.
00:20:08Yeah.
00:20:09That was more guys just kind of seeking their shot and finding it across the board there.
00:20:12And that's what summer league usually looks like.
00:20:14That's what preseason usually looks like.
00:20:17This was more traditional performance.
00:20:20Everybody without a roster spot or at least a two way contract is out there literally
00:20:23auditioning for their lives.
00:20:24So naturally they get the ball, they're just going to pull it, you know, like, yeah, that's
00:20:28what they're out there to do.
00:20:29So, I mean, you're going to get some wild, you know, stat lines and performances out
00:20:34of that.
00:20:35We are going to hear from a few of the players including Bailey Shireman, Baylor, Bailey.
00:20:44In just a minute, we've got some sound loaded up.
00:20:46We'll get to all of those guys.
00:20:47Hey shit.
00:20:48I called O'Shea Brissett Jacoby all year.
00:20:51You know, you got to give me a little time to warm up to these guys.
00:20:55So we'll hear from all those guys in a minute.

00:22:47Back to the games, guys.
00:22:48Let's hear a little bit from Baylor Shireman who did start slow, did start slow those first
00:22:56couple of shots.
00:22:57I mean, he's no Justin Turpin out there, you know, in the, in the beginning he was
00:23:00that, he was off, uh, that, those are two of the most horrific misses I can remember
00:23:07seeing.
00:23:08Um, horrific, but fine.
00:23:10Who cares?
00:23:11It was actually the other stuff that you were more interested in seeing.
00:23:14And at the end of the day, he really does look, he's got a lot of feel, you know, and
00:23:18a lot of IQ and made the smart play and the right play a lot of times.
00:23:22And even when he pulled the shot, maybe it was a tad rushed.
00:23:24He's just getting used to the speed of things.
00:23:26When he did have a good look there, uh, in transition, he knocked down his first three.
00:23:29I think everything mellowed out a little bit for him.
00:23:32He knocked down a corner three.
00:23:33I thought the passing was outstanding, uh, here, not just setting up guys for buckets,
00:23:38but good stuff in transition, getting rebounds and getting rid of the ball and getting it
00:23:42out quickly.
00:23:43So I, I was encouraged by the performance again.
00:23:47What can you tell from playing against this level of competition?
00:23:50But I thought he looked like a ball player.
00:23:52Uh, let's, let's hear from him after the game.
00:23:54Core vision out there and he immediately said, if you ask him, he'll say you're a quarterback.
00:23:59So how often do you tell people you're a quarterback and when you're throwing those touchdowns
00:24:03after the rebounds, how does it feel like?
00:24:05Yeah, I want, you know, a lot of people knew that I was a quarterback beforehand.
00:24:08So a lot of times that's like the first thing the announcer say in the game notes is Baylor
00:24:11Simon was a quarterback.
00:24:13Um, so I think it definitely helps with my vision, but, um, you know, it feels pretty
00:24:16good out there.
00:24:17You know, I like getting my teammates involved.
00:24:18Um, you know, I've said it multiple times, but I'd rather get an assist and, you know,
00:24:22score a bucket, especially if it's like a cool pass.
00:24:24So I'm always looking for my teammates and trying to get them, you know, uh, open shots.
00:24:28How have you developed that passing game over the years and was that kind of your goal going
00:24:32into the second unit just to set some guys up?
00:24:34Yeah, I, you know, it kind of started when I was really young, you know, I watched him
00:24:37pistol Pete growing up, he was throwing all those flashy passes and, um, I tried to emulate
00:24:41that when I was super young.
00:24:42And then as I continued to grow and develop, it kind of just stayed a part of my game.
00:24:46Um, and you know, like you said, going in with whoever I'm playing with, you know, I'm
00:24:49looking to get my teammates involved, um, get them open shots and, um, make them feel
00:24:54good.
00:24:58Pistol Pete.
00:24:59Pistol Pete.
00:25:00That, you know what?
00:25:01Pistol Pete was dead before, uh, Baylor was born.
00:25:05That's what you, that's what NBA classics is for clearly, clearly.
00:25:10The fact that he knows the name, the fact that he even recognized that there's this
00:25:15guy that was really good named pistol Pete is brilliant.
00:25:20That's a young Nick Jelso we have in our hands, you know, like, Oh boy.
00:25:24Oh my goodness.
00:25:25You know, reverence for the elders.
00:25:27I like that a lot.
00:25:28Um, I don't even know where you're getting the piss from, but the passing's awesome.
00:25:37I think that bounce pass, uh, we hit Anton was with his right hand to obviously the lefty.
00:25:42He does some flashy stuff with the ball and you saw it all over his college tape and you
00:25:46start to stack up what he can do.
00:25:48The shooting's obviously there, but yeah, the passing and the rebound, he was pretty
00:25:52good on the boards in this game too, I thought.
00:25:55So he's, he's really exciting.
00:25:57I'm still kind of shocked that they got him at 30.
00:26:01You look at this guy and you're like, you would have taken a flyer on this guy in the
00:26:04twenties.
00:26:05If you're a team here, cause that's just so much stuff that he can do.
00:26:09But I guess the defensive concerns are that big with him or the age, you know, guys are
00:26:13just so biased, like 23 year old or four or five year college guy.
00:26:17I think that's a big part of it here too.
00:26:20I think we're getting to the point where teams are getting past that age bias issue.
00:26:24When you see time and time again, there's like two or three guys damn near every year
00:26:29who are seniors who are late first, early second round picks who actually helped teams
00:26:33win games.
00:26:35I mean, you know, and I think Malcolm Brogdon was kind of the one guy that really kind of
00:26:39showed that not only can you help teams win, but you can be the best rookie in a damn,
00:26:43in your damn class.
00:26:44If you get an opportunity, how about another 30th overall pick Desmond Bain?
00:26:49Yeah.
00:26:50Yeah.
00:26:51Don't remind Celtics fans.
00:26:52Well, actually you can remind Celtics fans now cause they got a championship, so it doesn't
00:26:55matter any much.
00:26:57But the cost of getting rid of Ennis Cantor is what you mean.
00:27:02You had to say the E word.
00:27:05Yeah.
00:27:06But the thing about, you know, Baylor is that the lack of athleticism or ability to play
00:27:13above the, not necessarily above the rim, but just be more of an athlete out there.
00:27:18I think it scared a lot of teams off, particularly when you look at a team like the Celtics and
00:27:22you look at their starting five and their role players and that level of athleticism
00:27:26is really high.
00:27:27You know, looking at the top tier teams in the NBA, they're two top, you know, three
00:27:32top four players have a high level athleticism.
00:27:36And I think teams are nervous about that with Baylor, which is great for a team like the
00:27:40Celtics because you've got so much athleticism already in, in stock.
00:27:44You just need guys with a high basketball IQ who can make plays and maybe knock down
00:27:47some shots.
00:27:48And he seemed to check off those boxes at a pretty good clip.
00:27:52And I think in time it would just only get better.
00:27:56Noah, you were going to jump in there on Baylor.
00:27:57Yeah, I was just going to say, I think that, you know, the Celtics already have a couple
00:28:02of projects, kind of more raw players like Jordan Walsh as well.
00:28:05So like they just wanted somebody that could be a more of a connective piece that's ready
00:28:10to be thrown in for real minutes.
00:28:11And, you know, yeah, he missed those first few shots, but he generally looked pretty
00:28:14well all around, like getting rebounds, throwing really nice passes.
00:28:18Every assist felt like it was a completely different kind of pass too.
00:28:20So it wasn't like he just kept doing the same thing over and over again.
00:28:23It's like he clearly has a broad range of kinds of passes that he's looking at.
00:28:27And that clip that you just played, just the fact that that's what he's looking for.
00:28:31That's where he kind of gets his joy from the game.
00:28:33It's pretty clear when you watch him play that he's always looking at everybody.
00:28:36So yeah, I thought that, you know, he was the kind of player that the stat line won't
00:28:39show you how good he looked tonight.
00:28:42I think I feel like he showed flashes of a whole lot of things in a pretty short span.
00:28:46Hey, I want to say thank you here.
00:28:49Super chat coming in.
00:28:50Cobra.
00:28:51Cobra crease.
00:28:52Cobra crease.
00:28:53Cobra crease.
00:28:54We're going to put those $5 right in the blackjack.
00:28:57Yeah.
00:28:58Each of you will divide this one three ways.
00:29:01Are there $5 tables out there?
00:29:04Anyway, Cobra, thank you.
00:29:05Yeah.
00:29:06No, it's fun doing shows.
00:29:07It's fun doing postgame shows and having live stuff to react to, remind anybody.
00:29:11Super chats, of course, are welcome.
00:29:12The proceeds are divided up among the hosts.
00:29:16It doesn't go to the greedy overloads who run CLNS Media.
00:29:22So we do appreciate that.
00:29:24Thank you very much for contributing.
00:29:26It helps us continue to bring this content to you guys for free.
00:29:30Yeah.
00:29:31Baylor's like that guy you like playing pick up with, right?
00:29:33You know, like he's just going to find you, you know, that was great.
00:29:37One of my favorite plays there was the one to Keita where he absolutely, I think most
00:29:42guys who shoot the way he shoots, he pulls that three.
00:29:47But he didn't.
00:29:48He didn't rush it.
00:29:49He kind of waited.
00:29:50I almost think he waited a split second longer to allow, to suck in the D a little bit.
00:29:53And then he found, you know, found the streaker there, you know, for the layup, which was
00:29:58the right play.
00:29:59But just everything looked like nifty.
00:30:00You know, he just looked like he was in control.
00:30:02It always, it's also, it's going to come down to athleticism, right?
00:30:06That's it.
00:30:07You know, just speed of the game.
00:30:09And yeah, that is the fear is like, you know, they were saying about him coming out of the
00:30:15draft that like he's, he's competitive defensively and it's like what you're hoping for here.
00:30:19I know the comparisons are to Hauser.
00:30:22I don't think he's a Hauser type player.
00:30:23I think he can do a lot more things.
00:30:25There's more dynamic aspect to his game with the passing and the way he reads things and
00:30:29the way he can handle the ball.
00:30:31So I don't think he's just a dead eye shooter, but you're hoping the one comparison I'll
00:30:35say is if he can play defense like Sam Hauser plays or at that level and remain competitive
00:30:41and stay in front of guys and not get played off the court, I think there's a path to minutes
00:30:46kind of on the sooner side for him.
00:30:48And that was the thing about Sam that made him, I think, a more palatable option for
00:30:54Missoula than he was for EMA, uh, his defense, uh, Sam is not a walking turnstile defensive.
00:31:01Now is, is he Derek white?
00:31:03Is he a true holiday?
00:31:04No, but he is a serviceable defender.
00:31:07And we, as we saw in the finals, he can make, he can, you know, he can hold his own at times
00:31:13against some of the best scoring players in the league, the way he defended Luca, I thought
00:31:16at times it was really, really good.
00:31:18Um, and Baylor, I think, you know, again, I, he has a better, I think overall feel for
00:31:26what needs to be done when he's on the floor than Sam does, because Sam is a, is a, is
00:31:29a sniper.
00:31:30I mean, Sam is just an absolutely stone cold-blooded shooter.
00:31:34Uh, Baylor is a little, can not, I don't think as good as shooting a Sam, but he can do so
00:31:38many other things.
00:31:39I think offensively that will allow him to be on the floor at some point sooner, probably
00:31:44rather than later and not have you in nervous Nelly mode that, Oh my God, if he's not making
00:31:50shots, he can't help us.
00:31:52There's some other things he can do to help him besides knocking down threes.
00:31:55Yeah.
00:31:56Um, so that was a good stuff.
00:31:59A couple of other guys I want to hit on just individually, uh, you know, talking about
00:32:04rookies, uh, your, your thoughts on Watson, Noah, I thought it looked good.
00:32:11I mean, the thing with him is the defensive versatility.
00:32:13Like I feel like we've, we've heard that phrase a bunch of times, but that was on display.
00:32:17I mean, he, he was in a more limited role and you know, part of that is because he's
00:32:21going to be in a more limited role as well, but he, he checked the boxes at least as far
00:32:25as I was concerned, he had good feel around the rim.
00:32:27Um, and then it just felt like when he was caught up in different situations, he was
00:32:30able to handle them well.
00:32:31So, you know, he's the kind of guy I feel like, you know, you can't expect so much with
00:32:35that draft pick.
00:32:36Like if you can get anything out of him, that's a win.
00:32:38Uh, but I do think that he, he might surprise people and actually in the next few years,
00:32:42you're actually show that he's an NBA level player and contribute.
00:32:46I'm looking forward to seeing what he does in the G league.
00:32:48Uh, because I think if he can go there and start really showcasing a little bit more
00:32:53than just a multifaceted defender, if you can actually knock down shots, finish at
00:32:58the rim, maybe be a pretty good rim runner.
00:33:00I think that to Noah's point is really going to accelerate the likelihood of him getting
00:33:05on the floor sooner rather than later.
00:33:06But I thought for first game out, this was a good showing and you know, for a late second
00:33:12round pick, I thought he showed a lot of promise, certainly more promise than some other more
00:33:17widely regarded late second round picks have shown thus far in summer league.
00:33:21Um, so yeah, this was a good show for him.
00:33:24What is he supposed to be like?
00:33:27What do you like?
00:33:29What are you expecting?
00:33:31You think so?
00:33:32That's, that's his play.
00:33:38You see that in his game?
00:33:40Well defensively is where you're looking for him to be able to guard all those positions
00:33:44and you finally saw it.
00:33:45I don't think there were a lot of standout moments from defensively definitely wasn't
00:33:49involved a ton.
00:33:50The block on Hawkins there I think was the one, but yeah, that is when you really got
00:33:55a step on him, but he got, he got up quite, look, he, this guy does not, he's not a super
00:34:00athlete either.
00:34:01Um, he's, yeah, but he got up off the floor pretty quick on that one.
00:34:06Um, so you know, good that he was able to recover, it was good recovery and he, and
00:34:11he got off his feet quick to, to, to block that shot.
00:34:13So I liked it, but like, he's not super athletic.
00:34:16I'm kind of curious, like, yeah, I've heard the Al stuff.
00:34:18I don't know.
00:34:20I'm trying to figure out like what this guy could become or where he, where he plugs in.
00:34:23So they played him at the five a lot in this one.
00:34:26So he was playing around the basket offensively, which I don't think is ideal for him.
00:34:30Uh, he shot well around the rim in college, but at this level, I don't think that's going
00:34:34to be his game.
00:34:35He's, he's got to develop a three point shot.
00:34:37Uh, and he was 41% his last year in college only shot like 58 and Brad DJ, you heard them
00:34:45both say he just needs to shoot, shoot, shoot.
00:34:47And I wish he took seven threes in this game, you know, to pull a Joe, like he, he needs
00:34:53to just shoot like crazy out there.
00:34:54And again, when we talk about that front court, John, there's an opening there.
00:35:00If someone can really take a step or stand out, whether it's Kata or Tillman, take some
00:35:04steps this summer or Cornette really solidifies that role.
00:35:08That's a wide open position while Porzingis is out for two, three months.
00:35:14So you can't eliminate Watson from that either.
00:35:16If he can develop a three and show these capable of guarding all these different positions.
00:35:19Now, of course, Al is going to primarily fill that role, but eventually you do have to develop
00:35:23a guy who can play the four a little bit, who can play the five, maybe a little undersized,
00:35:28but he's shooting threes and he's guarding positions.
00:35:31And not to say Watson's going to be Alice replacement here, but he he's in that mold
00:35:36a little bit of that kind of player.
00:35:37And I wish at least offensively tonight, he was playing that style a little bit more tonight.
00:35:41Yeah.
00:35:42I keep going back to the fact that it felt like they just rolled the ball out there and
00:35:45just kind of took shots and played tonight it today.
00:35:48And I get it.
00:35:49It's the first game of summer league and these guys never played together before, but there
00:35:53really wasn't a ton of structure to what they were doing out there.
00:35:55It looked like, I don't know.
00:35:56No.
00:35:57Do you see more of it than I did?
00:35:58No, I think you're right.
00:36:00And I think it's also important to remember that Miami's already played a couple of summerly
00:36:03games together.
00:36:04And so those guys, like they, this isn't, that was not their first showing and the Celtics.
00:36:08It was like, they just started camp this week.
00:36:11And so they look like it too, like especially the new pieces, everything was kind of jumbled,
00:36:15but Watson's one, I feel like you didn't see a whole lot from him just in general that
00:36:19I feel like at the end of summer league, we'll be able to assess his whole body of work a
00:36:23little bit more than just the glimpses that we saw tonight, because I think everyone's
00:36:26interested in seeing how he looks and what his potential is.
00:36:29And he does fit more than mold of like versatility over athleticism.
00:36:33But I feel like there's a track record in Boston for that prototype actually being more
00:36:37effective, like the Tillman's over the Kedahs.
00:36:39Right.
00:36:41I don't know if he's necessarily either of those guys, but I think his skillset might
00:36:43translate well down the road, but we're going to need like a whole bunch more of a sample
00:36:47size than just what we saw tonight.
00:36:49Cause that felt to me really limited.
00:36:50And a lot of the mistakes that were made, it was hard to tell is that Watson that was
00:36:53out of position.
00:36:54Was it somebody else?
00:36:55So many miscommunications, so many open layups for the Celtics that, you know, just, it was
00:36:59hard to just gauge.
00:37:00It was a layup line.
00:37:01I know.
00:37:02Yeah.
00:37:03And where we were sitting too, it was like, you were just watching them and people were
00:37:05just out of position trying to dive in and try to contest them.
00:37:07So just hard to gauge like what the problem actually was.
00:37:11But he's, I'm eager to see like these next five games, how he looks.
00:37:15The Heat had better athletes on the floor.
00:37:17That's you know, that's one of the things that I, the only, the downside to the two
00:37:24players the Celtics got is the Celtics definitely needed an infusion of athleticism.
00:37:30I think they're not like the most athletic team.
00:37:33They're not unathletic, but they're lacking explosive athletes.
00:37:37They have guys who, like I said, is white, isn't white holiday.
00:37:40These guys aren't like jump out of the gym, blah, blah, blah, explosive, you know, Tatum
00:37:44is athletic, but not like, you know, this, the bench, you know, not super athletic, you
00:37:51know, they're not.
00:37:52And so I would have liked a little infusion of athleticism a little more than what they
00:37:58got here.
00:37:59And they're not really like,
00:38:01JD's the athlete, right?
00:38:04And he's a little undersized.
00:38:06I feel like Walsh brings, I really want to bring up Walsh and I don't know, I was going
00:38:11to get to Walsh off of this, which is the, I think people wanted to see something a lot
00:38:16better than this.
00:38:20It's one Vegas league game, but we're talking about, again, you know, you're, you're the
00:38:25second year guy.
00:38:26You've got a little bit under your belt, you know, as Noah put out there, you've got a
00:38:30guy like Springer, who's a G league MVP, Kata, who's dominated down there.
00:38:36You should, against this level of competition, you should look a little bit better than that.
00:38:42And he didn't, but again, it's one game, but it's like, he looked like he didn't like,
00:38:47he looked out of sorts.
00:38:49Yeah, he did.
00:38:50And I thought, you know, when, when Bobby had mentioned earlier about Springer, you
00:38:55know, possibly being, you know, with Tatum Brown, maybe getting some little more rest
00:38:58this season Springer, I thought Jordan Walsh was going to be that guy.
00:39:02And I still think he has the best chance of being that guy for the Celtics.
00:39:07If they're going to go a little bit deeper into that, that second unit, just because
00:39:10again, I just, Jordan, he's Springer is the better athlete, but I think Jordan Walsh has
00:39:19a little bit more of an intangible centric game.
00:39:23So much of what his game is about is I think, contesting shots, diving for loose balls,
00:39:28making hustle plays.
00:39:29And I don't think he's super athletic, but I don't think he's, you know, unathletic either.
00:39:35I think he's just a pretty good basketball player with a pretty high basketball IQ that
00:39:40can do some things to help you win.
00:39:42But this was, this was a bad game.
00:39:43I think he was trying too hard to be a shot maker.
00:39:47And that's just not who he is.
00:39:48We talked earlier about just, you know, the roles that they're playing now, very different
00:39:52than what they would do during the regular season.
00:39:54He's not a shot creator.
00:39:55He should be hopefully a three and D sort of guy.
00:39:59Well, I would, in a perfect world, he's a three and D guy who benefits from moving without
00:40:04the ball.
00:40:05I'll let Avery Bradley.
00:40:06Remember when Avery Bradley could not make shots, but, but dammit, he could cut along
00:40:09that baseline and be found for layups.
00:40:12I think Jordan Walsh has that type of potential, but it felt as though he was trying to be
00:40:17something in this game that he's not.
00:40:19And that is a guy that can knock down threes.
00:40:21I just don't think that's necessarily a significant part of his game, but to get to this level
00:40:26there, there has to be a certain level of irrational confidence that you play with.
00:40:31And sometimes you're going to have great games that are where you're playing way above your
00:40:35head and other times you're going to have games like this, where Jordan Walsh is not
00:40:38a great shooter, but I don't think he's 0 for 6 horrible or 1 for 8 bad.
00:40:43He's got to figure out what he needs to do to really establish himself as a legitimate
00:40:48and viable alternative.
00:40:50If Joe decides to go with, you know, a little bit more depth at that wing position, give
00:40:55Tatum and Bruno rest.
00:40:57I have a lot of thoughts on Jordan because I feel like in Maine last year, he played
00:41:03that 3 and D role so, so much.
00:41:05Like he, they really kept them in a very limited spot.
00:41:07You didn't see him off the dribble a lot.
00:41:09You didn't see them run the offense through him really at all.
00:41:11They were running the offense through guys that weren't even two ways a lot more than
00:41:14they were him.
00:41:16And he mentioned this at practice yesterday, but he said, you know, this is fun because
00:41:19I get to kind of get in my bag a little bit more.
00:41:21I don't have to play that 3 and D role exclusively that I play in Maine.
00:41:26And I think you saw him maybe try that tonight and obviously it didn't go well at all.
00:41:30But it's also like, he's not in practice of playing that role.
00:41:33Like he, he has not done it really in a very long time.
00:41:36And just the, the Jordan, Jaden Springer comparison, Jaden Springer, every time I've seen him play,
00:41:42he's like actually a ball hawk.
00:41:44Like he makes the person that he's guarding really uncomfortable.
00:41:47And Jordan Walsh, we hear that a lot about him.
00:41:50Like there's a narrative around him having a high defensive ceiling, but we haven't actually
00:41:53seen that yet.
00:41:54We haven't seen him take the toughest offensive matchup and really disrupt the person that
00:41:58he's guarding.
00:41:59So I think he can get there, but right now it's a lot more just speculative with him
00:42:02and conjecture of like, is he going to get to that point?
00:42:05Whereas Jaden Springer, like he played one G league game last year.
00:42:08The guy that he was guarding was like ready to hang up, hang up his shoes at the end of
00:42:13the game because he was so frustrated with Jaden being all over him.
00:42:16Again, tonight, I thought Jaden really disrupted Hackett's when he got in, got that assignment
00:42:20in the second half.
00:42:21Jordan Walsh, it's still, you know, I don't know if he can actually get to that point
00:42:24defensively, which is where everybody's kind of selling him at this point.
00:42:28So I think as far as like who has a better chance to crack the rotation or make an impact,
00:42:32you kind of have to go with Jaden at this point, just based off what we're actually
00:42:35able to see.
00:42:37This, this one really hurt me.
00:42:39I think you're, I think you're right.
00:42:40Go ahead, Bobby.
00:42:42This one really hurt me as a Walsh guy.
00:42:45It wasn't the bad shooting or some of the frenetic plays on offense.
00:42:49And as Noah mentioned, you didn't really see what you wanted to defensively, the frustration
00:42:54he wears out there, you see it in a way that you don't quite see with many other guys.
00:43:00When he's struggling out there there, he missed those two back to back threes before halftime
00:43:05and he just let out this groan in the corner, right in front of Noah and I, where we were
00:43:10sitting and it's like, oh man, like he's, he's wearing these struggles right now.
00:43:15That's how it kind of spirals to one for eight and the 0 for six from three there.
00:43:19And, you know, again, watching him a little bit in Maine last year and just kind of keeping
00:43:23tabs on him, I felt like he got much better with that as the year went on.
00:43:27And again, this guy's young, young, young.
00:43:30So obviously he came into the league with high hopes, you know, wanting to get involved
00:43:34with Boston.
00:43:35I think he struggled with that a little bit in the early stages of basically being assigned
00:43:40to Maine all year.
00:43:41But as Noah mentioned, like he found a role up there.
00:43:43He figured out what he had to do to get to Boston and then he pretty much committed to
00:43:50the fact that he was going to be in Maine for that whole year.
00:43:52And it's, it's tough, right?
00:43:54Because I know he wants to get involved.
00:43:56I know he thinks he can do it.
00:43:58Like he has the abilities, he's got the body, he's got all that.
00:44:02But it feels like if he can just make it through one more year in Maine, like next summer might
00:44:08be the time.
00:44:10And he was, you know, Noah was at practice the other day, wasn't he saying like, you
00:44:13know, I'm trying to show the coaches I can do it this year.
00:44:15I can get involved.
00:44:16I can be part of Boston.
00:44:18And we were just talking to DJ and he's like, you know, we're really stressing patience.
00:44:22These guys, you said at the start of the show, John, like these guys are young, like it doesn't
00:44:26have to happen this year, especially for a while ago.
00:44:30But it's like, but he puts that pressure on himself.
00:44:34Like he's out here at summer league right now being like, I got a show I can play for
00:44:37the Boston Celtics this year.
00:44:39Right.
00:44:40That's the thing is like, if you're talking about how they fare in NBA minutes against
00:44:45NBA competition, you're going to say there's a learning curve, right?
00:44:49And that, OK, geez, I mean, look, look what he's up against.
00:44:52He's a boy.
00:44:53He's playing against men.
00:44:54And, you know, he's he's still kind of figuring his way out here.
00:44:57But like summer league's different.
00:44:59Like that's where you can like, OK, this guy can play a little bit sort of thing.
00:45:04You want to see it.
00:45:05And when you don't see it, you're like, what what does he do?
00:45:08You know, and I don't you guys are saying that's that's not his game.
00:45:12The three there's no path to minutes at the NBA for him if he's not able to knock down
00:45:16three point shots.
00:45:17I don't think so.
00:45:18Well, yeah.
00:45:19Yeah.
00:45:20Whether it's going well or not, that's got to be his game.
00:45:21So he's got to be able to go out there and shoot it and kind of live with, you know,
00:45:25the peaks and valleys.
00:45:26He's probably got to get stronger.
00:45:27And Noah, as you said, yeah, if he's going to be a defensive guy, he's got to be a defensive
00:45:32guy.
00:45:33So like he's got to do the things he's supposed to do to earn those minutes.
00:45:36He's just not doing that.
00:45:37You know, he's not earning minutes this year, but if he's ever going to turn into something,
00:45:41he's got to do those two things at a high level.
00:45:44High enough level.
00:45:45Yeah.
00:45:46I just want to say that he was consistently hitting threes and he was like 36 percent
00:45:50or something like that.
00:45:51So it wasn't like he couldn't shoot at all.
00:45:52Tonight's game was a little bit out of character, that type of performance.
00:45:56But what Bobby said about his frustration, that's not out of character.
00:45:59Like that was a big theme for talking to Blaine Miller, who coached the main Celtics last
00:46:03year of like trying to reign him in, trying to get him, not let not let him get in his
00:46:06head so quickly because, you know, he's over two and he's already so frustrated that it
00:46:10really increases the chances that he's going to be over six when he's like taking every
00:46:14shot so seriously.
00:46:15And I get it.
00:46:16You know, I play basketball.
00:46:17I feel like I kind of see him a little bit and that that emotion, that frustration, like
00:46:20I feel that sometimes when I'm over whatever.
00:46:23But he's going to that's going to be a big part of his growth over the next few years.
00:46:27And I do think he has an NBA future.
00:46:29Everybody around him seems to think that as well.
00:46:32And I don't want to overreact to one game because he looked really good last summer
00:46:34league.
00:46:35And that was obviously he's better now.
00:46:36You know, he's only grown in the last year.
00:46:38So it was just one game.
00:46:39Maybe he'll come out and hit seven threes on Monday and look really good.
00:46:42But the two things for me is like being able to play through frustration and not just like
00:46:47foul because he does this sometimes get called for one foul and almost respond by fouling
00:46:51again or fouling three times and then just being able to stay within himself.
00:46:56Yeah.
00:46:57Like, yeah, he probably should just be a three and D player right now and not try to worry
00:47:00about getting in his bag in summer league.
00:47:02Yeah, it's not.
00:47:03And it's not.
00:47:04You're right.
00:47:05I mean, it's not you're not taking the snapshot off of the single game and say, boy, he shot
00:47:08poorly today.
00:47:09He's never going to make it in the league.
00:47:10He was fine last year in Maine.
00:47:11And you're right.
00:47:12About 36 percent, you know, knocking down three.
00:47:15So that, you know, it's it's his game.
00:47:18It's going to be his game.
00:47:19He's just got to get a little bit better at all of it.
00:47:23Other leftover things that we didn't get to it like we didn't you know, it's not someone
00:47:28who came in with a lot of hype or fanfare.
00:47:32But what were your guys impressions of Ramsey tonight?
00:47:37You know, I didn't know he existed until, you know, 45 minutes ago, an hour ago.
00:47:43And I was like, whoa, what was that?
00:47:45Who was that?
00:47:46And it just, you know, impressive eye popping sort of like athletic, you know, displays
00:47:52kind of all over the place there.
00:47:54It was impossible not to notice.
00:47:56You're always going to have these guys that just pop up out of nowhere and then you'll
00:47:58never hear from them again.
00:48:00But, you know, let's let's allow ourselves to get excited for a second.
00:48:04He looked pretty good.
00:48:05Yeah.
00:48:06And he was I had never heard of him either, I'll be fair.
00:48:09But Jordan Walsh at practice yesterday said we someone asked him, like, who has really
00:48:13stood out to you in summer league?
00:48:14And that's who he brought up.
00:48:15He was like, he has been so good this week.
00:48:17And I knew him from growing up, but he's from my area.
00:48:19And like, he's way better than he was a couple of years ago.
00:48:22And so I was like, eager to see him play.
00:48:24And then he had some big highlight plays and just the way he drove for the rim was
00:48:27kind of like eye popping, like there's a lot of people that yeah.
00:48:31So he might be like the J Scrub of this year, like someone who you just didn't really expect
00:48:34to make a dent.
00:48:35And then all of a sudden he stands out.
00:48:37But he's also in a really tough role.
00:48:38I hate that role for these guys where they have to come in and be like, I'm a microwave
00:48:41score right now.
00:48:42Like I have to go hit five shots because I'm battling with me.
00:48:46But he did really well.
00:48:47That's what I'm saying.
00:48:48So to be able to actually excel in that role, that's kind of to me like a little bit of
00:48:51a lose lose because you can't play regular basketball, be impressed.
00:48:57And they wanted that shrug last summer.
00:48:59It's a good comparison.
00:49:00J Scrub.
00:49:01He came out here and hit a million shots in summer league and it was like, all right,
00:49:03do they need that?
00:49:04Is that a guy they want?
00:49:06And they did.
00:49:07They signed him that two way and unfortunately towards ACL there.
00:49:10So if you're going to come out and hit shots like this and do it all four or five games
00:49:16here, you have to give them a look.
00:49:17This is this is open competition across the board.
00:49:20Yeah.
00:49:21No one.
00:49:22No one on this roster outside the draft picks who you're obviously going to give the benefit
00:49:24of the doubt to separate themselves in a game like this necessarily from anyone or in a
00:49:30setting like this.
00:49:31So to me, all despite J.D. signing one of those and who else signed Peterson, all three
00:49:39of those spots are up for grabs to me.
00:49:41Yeah, I don't know.
00:49:45I liked him again.
00:49:47Knew nothing about him.
00:49:48Not a single thing.
00:49:50I'm definitely kind of impressed.
00:49:51You know, and again, it's he won't be the first, won't be the last person to kind of
00:49:55flash in summer league and to never be heard from again.
00:49:58But you always want you always just hope you catch one of those diamonds in the rough.
00:50:01Right.
00:50:02So I'm really curious to see what he does for the rest of the time here at summer league,
00:50:05because, again, there's one or two of these guys that come out of nowhere and then you're
00:50:08like, yeah, we signed him to a two way or we did whatever.
00:50:12And again, I don't know what the Celtics have left.
00:50:14What do the Celtics have left in terms of what they can do with people?
00:50:18Is there anything they can do to add outside of the 15th roster spot?
00:50:23You can pull guys off the two way and add them.
00:50:26But I'm saying how many two ways you is there a limit?
00:50:29One open.
00:50:30There's one open right now.
00:50:31But if you want to drop the two guys who are on them and replace them with someone, you
00:50:36can do that.
00:50:37Yeah.
00:50:38Now, the big thing about Jameis is just consistency.
00:50:41I mean, he's you know, he's had his share of games like what we saw tonight, but he's
00:50:47just not consistent enough.
00:50:49And that's you know, you can make that argument for most of the guys that are, you know, late
00:50:54second round picks or undrafted players who just for whatever reason haven't found traction
00:50:59in the NBA.
00:51:00But certainly for a guy that is still kind of searching for that right fit, this was
00:51:06the kind of game that he absolutely needed to have.
00:51:08And let's not forget that as even though he's playing for the Celtics, there are 29 other
00:51:14teams that are paying attention to what's happening in summer league.
00:51:17So even if he, you know, doesn't necessarily fit into Brad Stevens plans, wouldn't if he
00:51:23continues to play this well, it would not be a surprise to see him on another team's
00:51:27roster based upon what he did, what he's doing this summer.
00:51:30So this was a good start for him, but definitely, you know, I'm curious to see, can he build
00:51:35on this?
00:51:36Can he develop some type of some semblance of consistency over the next few days?
00:51:39Yeah.
00:51:40All right.
00:51:41So that's our first summer league postgame.
00:51:43We're not going to wrap up the show yet.
00:51:44I want to get a couple more things that we're going to talk about before we go.
00:51:48And I'll let these guys scurry off to their to their work here, because, you know, as
00:51:52we said, Noah and Bobby and Sherrod are all hanging out in Vegas, be there for a few more
00:51:58games.
00:51:59Celtics have an off day tomorrow and they're back at it.
00:52:02I think it's every other day, the 15th and the 17th.
00:52:05So we'll keep doing this.
00:52:06What time's the tip off for the 15th?
00:52:08730 Eastern.
00:52:11We can do that.
00:52:13We can do that.
00:52:14And we're still awake.
00:52:15So, yeah, we can.
00:52:16We'll do a postgame show for there.
00:52:17Will Bronny talk?
00:52:18Huh?
00:52:19Will Bronny talk?
00:52:20It'll be fun.
00:52:21It'll be fun.
00:52:22Poor kid, man.
00:52:23I feel really bad for him.
00:52:24Can't win.
00:52:25He can't win.
00:52:26I wish I wish dad just let him do his own thing.
00:52:27But, man, I'm rooting for him.
00:52:28I really am.
00:52:29One thing we didn't get a chance to talk about with Sherrod, because he's been evading us
00:52:30or with Noah, just because we haven't had her on, is, of course, the JLNC.
00:52:31So, yeah.
00:52:32We're going to talk about that.
00:52:33We're going to talk about that.
00:52:34We're going to talk about that.
00:52:35We're going to talk about that.
00:52:36We're going to talk about that.
00:52:37We're going to talk about that.
00:52:38We're going to talk about that.
00:52:39We're going to talk about that.
00:52:40We're going to talk about that.
00:52:41We're going to talk about that.
00:52:42We're going to talk about that.
00:52:43We're going to talk about that.
00:52:44We're going to talk about that.
00:52:45We're going to talk about that.
00:52:46We're going to talk about that.
00:52:47We're going to talk about that.
00:52:48We're going to talk about that.
00:52:49We're going to talk about that.
00:52:50We're going to talk about that.
00:52:51We're going to talk about that.
00:52:52We're going to talk about that.
00:52:53We're going to talk about that.
00:52:54We're going to talk about that.
00:52:55We're going to talk about that.
00:52:56We're going to talk about that.
00:52:57We're going to talk about that.
00:52:58We're going to talk about that.
00:52:59We're going to talk about that.
00:53:00We're going to talk about that.
00:53:01We're going to talk about that.
00:53:02We're going to talk about that.
00:53:03We're going to talk about that.
00:53:04We're going to talk about that.
00:53:05We're going to talk about that.
00:53:06We're going to talk about that.
00:53:07We're going to talk about that.
00:53:08We're going to talk about that.
00:53:09We're going to talk about that.
00:53:10We're going to talk about that.
00:53:11We're going to talk about that.
00:53:12We're going to talk about that.
00:53:13We're going to talk about that.
00:53:14We're going to talk about that.
00:53:15We're going to talk about that.
00:53:16We're going to talk about that.
00:53:17We're going to talk about that.
00:53:18We're going to talk about that.
00:53:19We're going to talk about that.
00:53:20We're going to talk about that.
00:53:21We're going to talk about that.
00:53:22We're going to talk about that.
00:53:23We're going to talk about that.
00:53:24We're going to talk about that.
00:53:25We're going to talk about that.
00:53:26We're going to talk about that.
00:53:27We're going to talk about that.
00:53:28We're going to talk about that.
00:53:29We're going to talk about that.
00:53:30We're going to talk about that.
00:53:31We're going to talk about that.
00:53:32We're going to talk about that.
00:53:33We're going to talk about that.
00:53:34We're going to talk about that.
00:53:35We're going to talk about that.
00:53:36We're going to talk about that.
00:53:37We're going to talk about that.
00:53:38We're going to talk about that.
00:53:39We're going to talk about that.
00:53:40We're going to talk about that.
00:53:41We're going to talk about that.
00:53:43We're going to talk about that.
00:53:44We're going to talk about that.
00:53:45We're going to talk about that.
00:53:46We're going to talk about that.
00:53:47We're going to talk about that.
00:53:48We're going to talk about that.
00:53:49We're going to talk about that.
00:53:50We're going to talk about that.
00:53:51We're going to talk about that.
00:53:52We're going to talk about that.
00:53:53We're going to talk about that.
00:53:54We're going to talk about that.
00:53:55We're going to talk about that.
00:53:56We're going to talk about that.
00:53:57We're going to talk about that.
00:53:58We're going to talk about that.
00:53:59We're going to talk about that.
00:54:00We're going to talk about that.
00:54:01We're going to talk about that.
00:54:02We're going to talk about that.
00:54:03We're going to talk about that.
00:54:04We're going to talk about that.
00:54:05We're going to talk about that.
00:54:06We're going to talk about that.
00:54:07We're going to talk about that.
00:54:08We're going to talk about that.
00:54:09We're going to talk about that.
00:54:10We're going to talk about that.
00:54:11We're going to talk about that.
00:54:12We're going to talk about that.
00:54:13We're going to talk about that.
00:54:14We're going to talk about that.
00:54:15We're going to talk about that.
00:54:16We're going to talk about that.
00:54:17We're going to talk about that.
00:54:18We're going to talk about that.
00:54:19We're going to talk about that.
00:54:20We're going to talk about that.
00:54:21We're going to talk about that.
00:54:22We're going to talk about that.
00:54:23We're going to talk about that.
00:54:24We're going to talk about that.
00:54:25We're going to talk about that.
00:54:26We're going to talk about that.
00:54:27We're going to talk about that.
00:54:28We're going to talk about that.
00:54:29We're going to talk about that.
00:54:30We're going to talk about that.
00:54:31We're going to talk about that.
00:54:32We're going to talk about that.
00:54:33We're going to talk about that.
00:54:34We're going to talk about that.
00:54:35We're going to talk about that.
00:54:36We're going to talk about that.
00:54:37We're going to talk about that.
00:54:38We're going to talk about that.
00:54:39We're going to talk about that.
00:54:40We're going to talk about that.
00:54:41We're going to talk about that.
00:54:42We're going to talk about that.
00:54:43We're going to talk about that.
00:54:44We're going to talk about that.
00:54:45We're going to talk about that.
00:54:46We're going to talk about that.
00:54:47We're going to talk about that.
00:54:48We're going to talk about that.
00:54:49We're going to talk about that.
00:54:50We're going to talk about that.
00:54:51We're going to talk about that.
00:54:52We're going to talk about that.
00:54:53We're going to talk about that.
00:54:54We're going to talk about that.
00:54:55We're going to talk about that.
00:54:56We're going to talk about that.
00:54:57We're going to talk about that.
00:54:58We're going to talk about that.
00:54:59We're going to talk about that.
00:55:00We're going to talk about that.
00:55:01We're going to talk about that.
00:55:02We're going to talk about that.
00:55:03We're going to talk about that.
00:55:04We're going to talk about that.
00:55:05We're going to talk about that.
00:55:06We're going to talk about that.
00:55:07We're going to talk about that.
00:55:08We're going to talk about that.
00:55:09We're going to talk about that.
00:55:10We're going to talk about that.
00:55:11We're going to talk about that.
00:55:12We're going to talk about that.
00:55:13We're going to talk about that.
00:55:14We're going to talk about that.
00:55:15We're going to talk about that.
00:55:16We're going to talk about that.
00:55:17We're going to talk about that.
00:55:18We're going to talk about that.
00:55:19We're going to talk about that.
00:55:20We're going to talk about that.
00:55:21We're going to talk about that.
00:55:22We're going to talk about that.
00:55:23We're going to talk about that.
00:55:24We're going to talk about that.
00:55:25We're going to talk about that.
00:55:26We're going to talk about that.
00:55:27We're going to talk about that.
00:55:28We're going to talk about that.
00:55:29We're going to talk about that.
00:55:30We're going to talk about that.
00:55:31We're going to talk about that.
00:55:32We're going to talk about that.
00:55:33We're going to talk about that.
00:55:34We're going to talk about that.
00:55:35We're going to talk about that.
00:55:36We're going to talk about that.
00:55:37We're going to talk about that.

00:55:57We're going to talk about that.
00:55:58We're going to talk about that.
00:55:59We're going to talk about that.
00:56:00We're going to talk about that.
00:56:01We're going to talk about that.

01:04:13We're going to talk about that.
01:04:14We're going to talk about that.
01:04:15We're going to talk about that.
01:04:16We're going to talk about that.
01:04:17We're going to talk about that.
01:04:18We're going to talk about that.
01:04:19We're going to talk about that.
01:04:20We're going to talk about that.
01:04:21We're going to talk about that.
01:04:23I agree, too.
01:04:24I've said this a bunch.
01:04:25When we read into things that are said in the media, Joe Missoula being a great example
01:04:29of it and what he said and all of that stuff, I think a lot of it just simply comes down
01:04:35to these guys don't want to give it up to us, to the media.
01:04:39They don't want to play that game.
01:04:41They don't want to be teed up for the soundbite.
01:04:43They don't want to give you the thing that's going to help you complete your narrative
01:04:48or plug in into your story and be able to run with the thing that you want to run with.
01:04:53They just don't want to put it on a platter for you.
01:04:55That happens a lot.
01:04:56That's exactly it.
01:04:58I'm not doing this for you.
01:05:01Joe Missoula is a perfect example.
01:05:03It's that combative nature he has with people.
01:05:05I don't want to give it to you.
01:05:07Even if I agree with what you're saying right now and maybe we should have done this, I'm
01:05:11not letting you have it.
01:05:13I'm not.
01:05:14Duran's always had that a little bit too, which is like, nah, man, I'm not playing your
01:05:19game and there's a little of that to it there.
01:05:22So I get it.
01:05:23It's pretty kind of regular behavior and I do think it blows over.
01:05:27I am really, really curious what happens if Duran has to tap out.
01:05:33I don't think Jalen Brown had made any friends in Team USA this week.
01:05:36That's what I mean is like, what do you do at this point?
01:05:41Does he take it anyway?
01:05:42Does he decline and say, no, you should have done it the first time?
01:05:45Do you think he declines?
01:05:47Wouldn't that look really bad?
01:05:49I don't think he declines.
01:05:51I think he really wanted to play on the Olympic team.
01:05:55If he's offered, he has to take it.
01:05:57There's no way he can decline at this point.
01:05:59All the noise he's made, hell no, you got to take it.
01:06:02I don't think he could, but I wonder if he's the next man up here.
01:06:05And again, no, you just said like, I don't know if he's made a lot of friends, if he's
01:06:07like basically like, it's bullshit, I should be there, I'm better than a lot of these guys
01:06:12and he's going to just show up and be like, hey, everybody, you know, like, how you doing?
01:06:16Whoa, it's that guy.
01:06:21Yeah.
01:06:23Yeah, and I also just I also like Grant Hill said on the radio, like part of the appeal
01:06:28with Derek White is that he's a guy that's like not going to have any issues if he doesn't
01:06:32play for a few games or he's like, I wasn't buying Grant Hill's answer either.
01:06:36But that's a whole.
01:06:36He was he was different on the radio than what he did like in the pregame.
01:06:39He sounded a little more natural.
01:06:40I think he didn't want to give the media anything like we were just saying.
01:06:43Like a lot of times we get a lot better insight, like not in the pressers, but when they go
01:06:47off and there's some random podcasts or things because then they actually share real
01:06:51thoughts.
01:06:53I do think Jalen has a point about the shoe thing.
01:06:56And it was funny that Grant was, in my mind, sweating a little bit over that with the
01:07:00whole, oh, I wore feelers, that whole thing.
01:07:03But that was brutal.
01:07:05It's it's it's interesting.
01:07:09I think, again, to wrap it all up, Jalen was trying to make a targeted critique of the
01:07:16selection process, a targeted critique of Nike.
01:07:21And whether he didn't realize it or didn't care or didn't agree with our assessment of
01:07:27it, that it ends up slighting Derek, he just went ahead and did it anyway.
01:07:33And that's probably the most likely thing, right?
01:07:36He probably texted Derek or did something behind the scenes to congratulate him and
01:07:41thought that was enough or, again, just didn't view this as a slight to him.
01:07:45And we do.
01:07:48And I guess that's just where it's going to be left.
01:07:50And again, if anyone's not going to feel some type of way about it, it's Derek.
01:07:54So I guess that's the fortunate part about that.
01:07:57But he did put Tatum in a tough position.
01:07:59I mean, Tatum got hammered that next day of practice with questions and there was no
01:08:04real good answer for Tatum to give there.
01:08:06Yeah, it was easy.
01:08:07I told you it's not that hard.
01:08:09He's like he's just I don't fault him.
01:08:13He didn't want to take a side.
01:08:14But all he had to say is like, shit, man, I'd have them all here.
01:08:17We're the friggin champs.
01:08:19He's like, the more Celtics, the better done.
01:08:21Everybody loves you.
01:08:22It would have been easy.
01:08:23We might have lost Shiraz.
01:08:24Shiraz might have blinked out here because he was running a little bit low on
01:08:27batteries. And that's fine.
01:08:30We're going to wrap up the show anyway.
01:08:31I just wanted everybody's take.
01:08:32Because like I said, no, I know you talked to Richard about it.
01:08:36And, you know, Shiraz, we haven't had a chance to talk to him.
01:08:39So we'll see what happens.
01:08:40USA Basketball playing now?
01:08:42No, I think Monday.
01:08:45They are out there.
01:08:47OK, yeah, I saw Derek arrived, so that's good.
01:08:51Where are they, Abu Dhabi now?
01:08:53Yeah. OK, awesome.

01:09:49Guys, try to stay cool as best you can.
01:09:52Is it is there any relief coming?
01:09:55I thought it actually felt better here than Boston.
01:09:58Boston's just oppressive right now.
01:10:01What if the temperature felt better here?
01:10:04Oh, the humidity was killing me in Boston.
01:10:07It's 110 degrees over here.
01:10:10I like it better. I go back to Boston.
01:10:12That's crazy.

01:13:00That did not sound like a chair.

01:13:03It does sound like a chair.
