00:00In the United States, polling stations open in a very tight presidential election that
00:14will define whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump becomes the next U.S. President.
00:20In Palestine, at least 29 people were killed by Israeli shelling in the Gaza Strip during
00:26the early hours of Tuesday morning.
00:32In Venezuela, parliamentarians took part in the anti-fascist platform held during the
00:36World Parliamentary Forum against Fascism.
00:45Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Telestu Studio in
00:49Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news.
01:09Palestinian authorities report that Israeli genocidal forces dropped shellings on the
01:13Gaza Strip, claiming at least 70 lives in the last 24 hours.
01:17Al-Afa news agency informed that the occupying forces killed 25 people, including 13 children,
01:22after bombarding a house sheltering displaced people in the Beit Lahaya town on early Tuesday
01:28morning.
01:29In addition, authorities confirmed the death toll amounting to nine in the central and
01:33southern areas of the devastated Palestinian enclave, where three tent camps for displaced
01:39persons were targeted.
01:40Israel continues its genocidal aggression by land, sea and air against the Gaza Strip
01:45since October 7, 2023, bringing about 43,374 deaths and injuring over 102,000 people.
02:00They bombed the tent, it caught fire and they were all burnt.
02:07I was sitting in the room next to them.
02:09I heard the bombing so I opened the door to the room and found a fire raging.
02:14There was no warning.
02:16Israeli genocidal forces bombed them without warning.
02:19They killed a four-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, in addition to their mother who was
02:24a teacher and their father who worked as an accountant for the local council.
02:30In Palestine on Tuesday, the Israeli occupation army killed four Palestinians during sieges
02:34of towns in the occupied West Bank.
02:37Saudi troops launched a drone strike on the village of Mutla al-Shuhada, south of the
02:42city of Jenin, killing two people.
02:44The killing occurred while Israeli troops were maintaining a siege of more than seven
02:47hours in the nearby town of Qabatiyah.
02:50In addition to these two, citizens were martyred in the town of Tammun, in southern Tuvas.
02:56The killing of these four citizens brings to 771 number of martyrs, including 167 children
03:03since Israel intensified its campaigns in the occupied West Bank in October 2023.
03:14The Syrian Immigration Department announced that it received more than 481,000 displaced
03:19people following the Israeli aggression against Lebanon.
03:23The institution detailed that on Tuesday some 2,500 Lebanese and more than 1,500 Syrians
03:28fleeing from the Syrian offensive entered Damascus.
03:32In this sense, the Red Crescent continues with humanitarian work to protect those that
03:37arrived from Beirut to the lodging centers at the border.
03:41The Immigration Department indicated that the refugees are being offered food and supplies
03:46to meet their basic needs and help them adjust.
03:49In this scenario, the Ministry of Social Affairs denounces the inefficient policies of international
03:55organizations to stop the Israeli aggressions against the Middle East.
04:12And in the United States, polling stations open in a very tight presidential election
04:17that will define whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump becomes the next U.S. President.
04:22The opening hours vary by state and municipality in the country, but are mainly between 6 a.m.
04:26and 8 p.m. local time.
04:27More than 240 million people are eligible to vote this November 5th for President and
04:32Vice President of the United States.
04:33As of this Tuesday, 75 million people had cast early ballots, a record high.
04:39The United States has a system of indirect democracy in which elections are not decided
04:43by popular vote, but by the allocation of electoral college delegates in each state.
04:53In this context, candidates Donald Trump and Kamala Harris won the same number of votes
04:57in the northeastern town of Dixville-Notch.
04:58The Committee of Six gave three votes to Trump and three to Harris.
05:03In 2020, incumbent U.S. President Joe Biden won a 5-0 victory over former President Donald Trump.
05:14Meanwhile, voters in Pennsylvania comment on their main concern after casting their ballots.
05:20The main issue for me is the continuation of our democracy.
05:26I don't want an autocrat.
05:28I don't want someone who is convicted of a felon to be the number one person in our political environment.
05:38America great again.
05:39We need jobs.
05:40We don't need another four more years of high inflation, gas prices, lying, close the border, murder.
05:50America comes first, and Harris is not going to support that.
05:53She's been good lately, but I feel like she's going to put us back together.
05:56I think that, you know, she'll put the whole community, the whole world back together again,
06:00because we're so divided right now and she's about peace.
06:04And everything that her opponent has to say is like really negative all the time, like nothing ever positive, you know, everything.
06:12So I feel like, you know, that's why I'm voting for her, because I want peace.
06:18Meanwhile, in Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.
06:20Republican vice presidential nominee J.D.
06:23Vance cast his vote on Election Day.
06:25That is, this is what he had to say after voting.
06:31Look, I think our message is, first of all, we do expect to win, but obviously no matter who wins, half the country, as you said, is going to be at least partially disappointed.
06:39I think my attitude is the best way to heal the rift in the country is to try to govern the country as well as we can, create as much prosperity as we can for the American people and remind our fellow Americans that we are all fundamentally on the same team, however we voted.
06:53And in Puerto Rico, thousands exercised their right to vote to choose the officials who will be at the head of the government for the next 40 years.
07:03In different polling stations in the metropolitan area, people lined up before the official opening of the centers under heavy rain.
07:10In this electoral event, Puerto Ricans elect their governor, representatives, senators, and mayors.
07:15A referendum will also be held to decide the island's status with respect to the United States.
07:20Despite the fact that Washington does not support this referendum, Florida said polling stations will remain open until 5 p.m.
07:26local time.
07:32We're now going to take a short break, but first, remember, you can join us on TikTok at TELUS English, where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
07:41We'll be right back. Stay with us.
07:50Welcome back.
08:02We now go back live to hear what Carlos Montero has to say, our special envoy in Washington, on everything that is happening during the presidential elections.
08:10Good afternoon from good morning.
08:18It's not good afternoon yet.
08:20We are close to noon so far.
08:22So good election is going smooth.
08:24Open the polls at seven o'clock.
08:26They are going to close at seven p.m.
08:28in most of the states of the East Coast.
08:32But I have an information last minute information that's going to maybe it's going to be important.
08:37You know, Pennsylvania, Kamala Harris was last night there.
08:42Donald Trump was there yesterday.
08:44I'm going to talk about that in a while.
08:46But I want to tell you this information, the last minute information, a judge, the justice.
08:51They said that in a small county of Pennsylvania, there were some problem with the software because it was that problems with the software.
08:59They couldn't scan the where the people vote.
09:03They are going to spend the hours to vote until 10 p.m.
09:09from seven to 10 p.m.
09:11That's going to be scary because this is a state that's going to be very important.
09:16It's one of the seven swing states that can go either Republican or Democrat.
09:21And Donald Trump was saying that he's scared that maybe it's going to be fraud.
09:25And listen to that.
09:26I mean, this problem with the software, that's something commonly happen in any system.
09:31But it's going to be 10 and 10 p.m.
09:34Let's see how we react.
09:35Donald Trump, who has a very, very late evening closes closing of his campaign.
09:42Two o'clock, he left Michigan.
09:46Five o'clock.
09:47He was in Florida already where he's going to Spain.
09:49The result.
09:50He was yesterday closing his campaign, saying that America is in danger.
09:55That foreigners are taking over this country and they have to make them go back to their
10:01country and make America great and America for the American.
10:05He said also that Mexico has to help USA to stop this flow of immigrants come here.
10:11And he said if they don't do it, he's going to impose some taxes on Mexican product.
10:1820 percent.
10:19And the problem still 40.
10:20And it's going to work far as it needs to be to stop the immigrants coming here.
10:26Let's talk about Kamala Harris.
10:27Kamala Harris.
10:28She was in a different mood.
10:30She was closing his campaign in Philadelphia with a lot of show business power star.
10:39It was Bon Jovi.
10:40It was Lady Gaga.
10:42It was their Oprah Winfrey and other famous people here.
10:45And she said, we need to change the way we look at each other in America.
10:49This cannot be so much hate.
10:51If I win, I want to be the president of all the American.
10:55Not only one American, I want to be the president of the Republican, of the Democrat.
11:01Everybody is going to be free to say what they think in this country.
11:05And today she's going to wait results here in the Capitol.
11:09Let's see what's happened.
11:10Are we going to know about the results?
11:12It's going to be very difficult, probably.
11:14But especially Pennsylvania is going to close later the polls.
11:19So maybe it's going to take a while for us to know who is going to be the next president.
11:23I was Ohio.
11:25Shady Bounce, the candidate of the vice president for the Republican Party, he voted this morning.
11:32And he said something.
11:32I mean, I agree with him.
11:34He said, whoever is going to win this election, half of the country is going to be upset.
11:40The reason this country is very divided, very extremely divided.
11:44I never see an election so divided.
11:46So I mean, what the candidate for the vice president of the Republican Party was saying
11:51is right.
11:51Half of the country is going to be upset.
11:54We are going to be here following the story, following these transcendental historic elections
12:01in the USA.
12:02We're going to have a special program this evening at 7 p.m.
12:05Eastern Time in Spanish.
12:07And we are also be talking with you guys in English about what's going on.
12:12And as far as we need, we are going to be here informing you guys.
12:16Thank you very much.
12:17I go back to you to the studio.
12:21Thank you, Carlos, for the latest information.
12:23We'll now continue with our news.
12:25In Venezuela, parliamentarians took part in the anti-fascist platform held during the
12:29World Parliamentary Forum Against Fascism.
12:32Parliamentarians from more than 70 countries participated in the anti-fascist and imperialist
12:37tribune on the first World Parliamentary Forum Against Fascism.
12:40In this sense, parliamentary representatives from countries such as Russia, Palestine,
12:44Egypt, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Venezuela attended the event.
12:49Also, during his participation, the Venezuelan minister, Diosdado Cabello, warned about the
12:54mutations that fascism adopts to influence the people and those who grow with the support
13:00of the media and networks and with the financing of the empires.
13:09Also in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro received at the Miraflores Palace the Minister
13:13of Communications and Technology of Iran, Sayed Sattar Hashemi, in order to strengthen
13:18bilateral relations between both nations.
13:20The Iranian delegation was received by the national leader at the Miraflores Palace,
13:24thus confirming the relationship at the highest strategic level between both nations.
13:29In this sense, the Minister of Communications was accompanied by the Iranian ambassador
13:33in the country, Huwatollah Soltani.
13:36In the same context, the representative of Iran has held several meetings in the country
13:40with the Vice President of Communications, Freddie Nunes, assuming important commitments
13:43to have a communication margin coupled to the new technologies between the Islamic Republic
13:48of Iran and Venezuela.
14:09In Spain, the authorities are still trying to search for the missing, while the controversy
14:14continues to revolve around a possible negligence of the Valencian authorities who did not warn
14:18in time of the disaster that was going to occur.
14:21From Valencia, our colleague Sergio RodrĂguez, with the report.
14:27Vicente tries to retrieve his belongings from his vehicle that he has located after seeing
14:32it on television.
14:33He saw how the flood swept through Valencia while he was stuck at his workstation.
14:38Two hours after the disaster, he received a message warning about the danger.
14:48If they had sent the alarm at 12 a.m. or 2 p.m. instead of 8 p.m., most people would
14:53have been saved from death, and we would have recovered our belongings.
15:02What they can't do is send an alarm at 8 o'clock at night.
15:06People felt like smashing their phones against the floor, because we were watching the disaster
15:10from the company's dining room, from upstairs.
15:14How can they set an alarm at 8 o'clock at night?
15:16This is a disgrace.
15:25The state meteorological agency had been warning of the Dena since October 23, and repeated
15:31it every day until the 29th, when it warned of extreme risk.
15:36Adrián received a warning message from the Valencian community 12 hours after the weather
15:41alert, but just when the water was flooding the highway and his hotel.
15:49I got the message while the water was already up to my feet inside the van at 8.30 p.m.,
15:54when the water had already passed the highway is when I got the message, and I said,
15:58I received the message quite late.
16:07The government does not want to assess the polemic and assures that there will be time to do so.
16:15We are not going to deviate, despite what may happen with some violent events,
16:20absolutely marginal. The Valencian and Spanish citizens as a whole want to look forward and
16:25move forward with a huge gesture of responsibility and solidarity and that
16:29is what we are going to do from the government of Spain in coordination with all the institutions.
16:39As the warnings came in, 40 square kilometers of land were affected by the storm
16:45that has left hundreds of victims.
16:49Whether or not there was negligence during the flood disaster in Spain,
16:53the truth is that this question has generated the indignation of the citizens of the Valencian
16:58community, who demand responsibility for the worst flood in the last century.
17:10The National Civil Protection System of Panama reported on Monday five fatalities
17:14from sustained heavy rainfalls and floods in the last couple of days.
17:17Authorities registered that over 1,500 people have been affected by the heavy rainfalls,
17:22noting that the country is still on alert at national level. The storm profile has caused
17:27rivers to swell, landslides, floods, trees to fall, and bridges to collapse. The Meteorological
17:32Institute forecasts that the intensity of the rainfalls will increase in the next hours
17:36as a result of the storm.
17:45An Indonesian authorities reported on Tuesday that over 2,000 people had been evacuated after
17:50the eruption of the Lebotobi Laki-Laki volcano, located in the east of the country. The volcano
17:55erupted on Sunday, forcing the evacuation of 2,472 people. The lava and burning rocks impacted
18:01the settlements closest to the eruption zone, killing 10 people and injuring 64, including
18:07one in critical condition and 31 seriously. In this regard, the Indonesian Disaster Agency
18:11reported that flash floods and cold lava flows could arrive in the next few days.
18:17The local government declared a state of emergency for the next 58 days in order to
18:21provide aid to the 10,000 residents who were affected by the eruption.
18:32I heard a loud thunderous sound and, as I ran, rocks fell on my feet. They were hot
18:37stones and ashes, which burned and hurt my feet, causing blisters and heavy bleeding.
18:41The falling rocks also hit my head, but I managed to help another victim.
18:48In Western Indonesia, the Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency announced on Tuesday the birth
18:54of a female baby elephant at the Bulusina Eco Park on Sumatra Island. The World Wide Fund for Nature
19:00noticed that there are from 2,400 to 2,800 Sumatran elephants left. Those they are considered
19:09as a critically endangered species as a result of habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching.
19:15Regarding the newborn calf, vets are providing her and her mother vitamins to boost their immune
19:20system and appetite. The head of Riau Conservation Agency shared his view on the health of the
19:25elephant. We now have a second short break coming up, but before, we invite you to visit

20:08Welcome back. In Cuba, the 40th edition of the Havana International Fair was
20:12moving forward with the attendance of at least 700 participants from 63 countries worldwide.
20:17On the first day, the Cuban government highlighted that the fair has contributed to strengthening the
20:21governmental transformations to curb distortions and boost the domestic economy. Although this
20:27photo stressed that the large international participation has showed confidence of
20:31international entrepreneurs in the country and confirmed that Cuba is open to the world to bolster
20:36new investments, replace imports, and access other markets. Nations such as Venezuela, China,
20:42Vietnam, Russia, Mexico, and Spain are part of the international fair that will be held until November 9th in Havana.
20:55And Nicaragua is a leader in agricultural research
20:57and production in the region. From Managua, our colleague Kenya Doña with the report.
21:07The National Center for Plant Growth is one of the areas located in the Augusto CĂ©sar
21:12Sandino National Agricultural Research Center, a pioneer in the production of in vitro plants,
21:18allowing significant advances in the micropropagation of mosaic, fruits, and tubers.
21:27A single bud that we extract from the field from the mother plots can become 200 or 500 plants.
21:34What the producers do in the field when they sow a seed in the soil,
21:38here it is done in an artificial culture medium. That is to say that we provide the vitamins and
21:44minerals and everything that is required for the plant to develop. And once the plant develops,
21:50we move it outside to acclimatize it and condition it to the environment.
21:54Each year, this center produces more than 1,509,000 plants that are distributed to producers
22:06throughout the country to support and strengthen the national agricultural sector.
22:12Here we create plants free of pests and diseases with a high genetic potential
22:18and increased productivity. In other words, if the national average, the producer produces
22:23one bunch or 24 units per bunch of bananas, here the material we select and produce should be above
22:3050 units. In addition, the government of Nicaragua supports producers with the delivery of these
22:49plants resistant to the effects of climate change. This is a priority in the country for
22:57our good government in terms of food security and sovereignty, but also the advancement of technology
23:03made available to producer families so that they can easily face climate change,
23:09the threat of pests and diseases, and also so that they can also face the issue of the market.
23:20Among the successful experiences of this program is the young Aileen Martinez-Lewis,
23:25who works in the banana industry, contributing to the development of modern and efficient agriculture.
23:34We began to have relations with the center and we found that they had these varieties that could
23:39work for us. We started to study them in an area where we are developing banana in vitro.
23:47We are expecting between 50 to 60 units per plant and we have seen that in the case of its
23:52reproduction it has started to reproduce quite well and quickly within the parameters we expected.
23:57In many cases we have 5 to 10 offspring. So we are happy with that and I think it is something
24:13to value. The producer is no longer alone. We are now all hand in hand to move the country forward.
24:28Nicaragua targets innovation and sustainable development in the agricultural sector,
24:34benefiting thousands of producers and boosting the country's
24:37economic growth and progress in the fight against poverty.
24:43Nicaragua.
