00:11Last night, the high-ranking officials of the government,
00:16members of the Diplomatic Corps, and other stakeholders
00:20discussed issues related to this issue.
00:23Bella Lesmora was in the center of the news.
00:27President Ferdinand R. Marquez Jr. condemned the ongoing defense of the Philippines' administration,
00:35the rights and sovereignty of the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea,
00:39as well as the implementation of a diplomatic and peaceful resolution
00:43on the tensions in the so-called territory.
00:46At the opening ceremony of the Manila Dialogue on the South China Sea in Taguig City,
00:51Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin shared the President's message.
00:56Here, the President expressed his desire to continue to assist other countries
01:02in implementing the rule of law.
01:05The Philippines will continue to work with ASEAN member states and China
01:11towards the early conclusion of an effective and substantive code of conduct in the South China Sea.
01:19Along with this, we will continue to publicly stand on the foundation of international law
01:26on UNCLOS and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
01:30House Speaker Martin Romualdez also served as keynote speaker at the gathering.
01:35In his speech, the House Leader also emphasized that now and more than ever,
01:40the ASEAN Code of Conduct, which is anchored in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS,
01:47must be implemented to ensure long-term peace and order in the entire region.
01:52Our stand on these waters is not just a matter of geography.
01:58It is a matter of national pride, economic security, and the legacy we will pass on to future generations.
02:07Since 2016, the Arbitral Award has stood as a landmark of justice and affirmation
02:16of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Seas.
02:20This ruling affirms that our rights in these waters are recognized, legitimate, and must be respected by all.
02:29On behalf of the House, Romualdez also expressed his support for the government
02:34to our armed forces so that they can guard and take care of our territories.
02:41As Speaker of the House, I assure you that our legislative branch stands firmly behind our efforts
02:48to fortify our nation's national security.
02:52We are bolstering our Coast Guard, investing in maritime research,
02:57and working closely with our regional allies to ensure a free, open, and stable South China Sea.
03:05On behalf of the National Security Advisor, Eduardo Año,
03:09I hope that every Filipino will be united in upholding our rights,
03:14and the role of the government to jointly implement justice and fairness.
03:20We face a choice, either uphold a world governed by rule of law,
03:27or risk a return to a world governed by power alone.
03:31But for us peace-loving nations, the South China Sea should not be an arena of conflict,
03:38but it must be a sea that springs cooperation and prosperity
03:44without sacrificing our sovereignty, sovereign rights, territorial integrity, and jurisdiction.
