00:00Unlike his losing predecessor-slash-successor to replace him in the Oval Office, outgoing
00:05President Joseph Biden showed grace and acceptance of defeat at the hands of the guy he defeated
00:10in 2020.
00:11B.Y.'s White House correspondent, Anita Powell, on the President's address to the nation yesterday.
00:19President Joe Biden on Thursday promised a smooth transition for his successor, who was
00:23also his predecessor, President-elect Donald Trump.
00:27He also encouraged unity after the defeat of his preferred candidate, Vice President
00:31Kamala Harris.
00:32The people vote and choose their own leaders and they do it peacefully.
00:36And we're in a democracy, the will of the people always prevails.
00:41Trump in his victory speech a day earlier also emphasized unity, as he noted the clear
00:46rightward shifts among voters that gave him a comfortable win.
00:49They came from all quarters, union, non-union, African-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-American,
00:56Arab-American, Muslim-American.
01:00We had everybody and it was beautiful.
01:03It was a historic realignment, uniting citizens of all backgrounds around a common core of
01:12common sense.
01:16Four years earlier, Trump refused to accept his election loss to Biden.
01:20He stood by while an angry mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol while the election
01:24was being certified on January 6, 2021.
01:28Biden on Thursday drew a contrast.
01:30We accept the choice the country made.
01:33I've said many times, you can't love your country only when you win.
01:41You can't love your neighbor only when you agree.
01:45Biden also said he hoped to put to rest questions about the integrity of the American electoral
01:50system.
01:51It is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent.
01:57And it can be trusted.
01:59Win or lose.
02:00Trump's second inauguration happens January 20, 2025.
02:04Anita Powell, VOA News, The White House.
