I'm here in Hodge Hill, asking the people there to share their thoughts on the city's roughest areas. From neighbourhoods with high poverty levels to places where safety is a concern, the people here today give their personal views on where they feel uneasy and why.
Transcript
00:00I think the roughest area at the moment is probably Eddington.
00:04So if you walk down the high street, which was once a very lovely high street,
00:08we see a lot of people begging, a lot of homeless, a lot of rough sleepers.
00:12So I think it's down to the local government as well.
00:16As you know, Birmingham has suffered with the current Birmingham City Council going bankrupt,
00:21selling off a lot of the Birmingham City Council properties,
00:25a lot of the resources have been sold, privatised as well.
00:28So I think the local authority does need to do more.
00:32I presume it's the inner city areas,
00:36sort of Sparkbrook, Glowsdales, places like that.
00:40What makes them rough?
00:44I don't know, I suppose the social housing.
00:47I would say, obviously you've got your more rougher parts,
00:51like Handsworth, Neathall's a little bit, Newtown.
00:55Eddington and Eddington High Street, I would mainly say.
00:59You can always say Stetchford as well, Acots Green isn't always the best either.
01:03You know, you've got Yardley Wood, Billsley, King's East.
01:07But it's only because of the community, I would say.
01:11I grew up more on the whole green side,
01:15so because of that I've seen from both sides of the spectrum where you've got a nicer community
01:19that won't spit on the floor, feed the pigeons,
01:23leave the rubbish bins out, there won't be no rats or vermin.
01:27I think probably this is one of the roughest areas.
01:31It's most likely Alum Rock and Washerleaf.
01:35Salt Lake.
01:39Alum Rock has a lot of shops,
01:43there's a lot of businesses within Alum Rock,
01:47but for some reason there is also elements of poverty.
01:51It's an old area, and they've stopped investing in old areas more than anything.
