00:00Let's do Grandy's Grades.
00:03How did the 49ers grade out this week?
00:05Did they pass?
00:07Did they fail?
00:08Let's find out.
00:09It's time for Grandy's Grades.
00:12Alright, as always, Grandy's Grades after a week of Niners football.
00:18Week 11 in Santa Clara, the Seahawks 20, Niners 17.
00:21We begin, as we always do, with the quarterback position.
00:24That was Brock Purdy, as always.
00:25This week I gave Brock Purdy a C-.
00:28It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't all that impressive either.
00:31The interception was bad.
00:33There were some nice throws.
00:34The Juwan Jennings plays were obviously very nice.
00:37You guys have pointed out the Debo miss in the fourth quarter on 2nd and 11.
00:40That was a really bad one.
00:4221 for 28 completions, and a lot of those were just easy, over the middle, to McCaffrey,
00:47to Debo in the flat, all of that.
00:49I wasn't that impressed.
00:50A C- for Brock Purdy.
00:51C- for me, and I would just add in the pylon run, Purdy to the pylon for the touchdown,
00:57and a couple of other scrambles.
00:59The big ones were the throw to McCaffrey, the force, INT, and Mark mentioned it on Monday,
01:04the 2nd and 11 play action.
01:06Debo's just open, and that's the throw that might ice the game, but in general, he was
01:11alright.
01:12I gave him a C+.
01:13Yeah, I actually would go even higher.
01:15I go B-, there's really only two throws that bother me.
01:18They both bother me a lot.
01:20But the 26 other throws didn't bother me.
01:22The two throws of the overthrow of Debo and the interception.
01:26Don't forget the scramble that had the pump fake also.
01:29The pump fake for the first down.
01:30Look, if we're going to sit here and admit, based on video, that very, very little was
01:35open, he didn't have a lot of time, receivers aren't open, it was not a great game for Brock,
01:41but don't forget this also.
01:43How often was it 1st and 20, 2nd and 15?
01:47That totally robs a quarterback of their ability to go out there and be aggressive because
01:52of all of those offensive line penalties.
01:55So not a great game for Brock, but I also thought there were a lot of other places to
02:00look first, so B- for me.
02:02Up next, skill positions.
02:03That's wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs.
02:05Obviously, no Kittle today, that was, or this week, that was a big minus for the 49ers.
02:10Juwan Jennings was amazing in this game.
02:13McCaffrey was alright, nothing special, but he wasn't bad by any stretch.
02:17But you got nothing from basically everybody else.
02:20Skill positions, a C for me.
02:23Juwan Jennings carries that group, McCaffrey was alright, everybody else, you got absolutely
02:27nothing.
02:28Yeah, that feels about right, maybe even a C+, because I didn't see anything that was
02:32like offensive, there weren't like fumbles, but you know, there was the- Juwan Jennings,
02:38I think also brings it up because he was just- he was restaurant quality in this game, but
02:43as we've talked a lot about, CMC was underwhelming, Debo Samuel was very underwhelming, Ricky
02:51Pearsall didn't really get involved, there's no Kittle in the game, so yeah, nothing stands
02:56out as great either, but Juwan Jennings, for me, is enough to make it a C+.
03:00That's what makes it a B- for me, you guys really encapsulated it well, Juwan was so
03:04great again in dragging three and four guys, converting third downs, McCaffrey was fine,
03:11no Pearsall is going to be blamed on another category coming up.
03:15Yes, true, good point.
03:17Offensive line is up next, I'll keep this one short and sweet.
03:21D-plus for the O-line, McKivitt's penalties, Brendel was very bad once again, D-plus,
03:28they were very bad throughout this entire game.
03:29Yeah, D-plus, and you weren't able to rush it effectively, Purdy scrambling for his life,
03:34and the line of scrimmage was never getting to the second level on run plays, it was staying
03:39at the line of scrimmage, D-plus is where I had it.
03:41I don't even know where you guys are getting your plus, what the hell did they- like, I'm
03:45not going to give them an F because failing means essentially you almost didn't even show
03:48up to the football game, but what the hell did they do well?
03:53Give me one thing that the offensive line did really well in this game.
03:55Purdy was pretty good, and Trent Williams was good, not up to his normal standards.
03:59I'm looking at it as a collective, you didn't run the ball well, you didn't protect well,
04:04and you made buckets of penalties, you get a D.
04:07There you go.
04:08Fair enough, up next is the front seven as we go over to the defense, this is the down
04:12defensive linemen and the linebackers.
04:14I honestly was pleasantly surprised and impressed by the performance of the D-line, a B-minus
04:19overall for the front seven, I thought Bosa was very good when he was available, I also
04:24thought it was the best game for Leonard Floyd, he was the only guy getting pressure on Geno
04:28Smith once Bosa went down, I gave that group for their efforts a B-minus.
04:32Don't leave out D. Winters too, I thought he had maybe one of his best games as a young
04:37pro and so I actually would bump it up even a little bit more because I'm going to give
04:41a nod to the fact that it didn't really go bad until Nick left, and you've got to acknowledge
04:48that, your linchpin was out of the football game, so I'll go more like B-plus because
04:54they were running this game, they were going to pull a close win out for the 49ers until
04:59Nick Bosa left.
05:00Yeah, three names, one sack, Yotur Gros Matos, or Gros Matos as some would call him, I thought
05:07that he played a really good game, broke down a little bit late, and Devondre Campbell,
05:13good early and again on that last drive made a couple of critical mistakes, I have it as
05:16a solid B though.
05:18Not bad, not bad, secondary is up next, obviously this has been a group that's been very young
05:23of late without Mooney Ward, I gave that group a C-plus, you had an interception, but Jackson
05:29Smith and Jigba killed you underneath all game long, maybe this is more schematic than
05:33player based, but a C-plus for the secondary.
05:36That C for me, and the interception, Yadim is like, oh thank you, you throw it to me,
05:4215 yards overthrown, but you're right, Grandy, Jackson Smith and Jigba on that last drive,
05:47there was too much playing eight yards off, too many guys breaking open, and other than
05:51the gimme pick, they only had two other passes defensed on the entire game.
05:57Yeah, I mean, good game for Lenore, Green had to leave for a second before he came back
06:02in, we know that Mooney Ward, who by the way was back in the facility today, which is great
06:05to hear, but we know he was out, I'm with you that the Yadim interception was just kind
06:11of a lucky spot for him to be, and he wasn't very good in some of the other spots, but
06:15overall not the spot where I would point the loss, so I'll go C-plus for them.
06:20Up next is special teams, Jake Moody made all of his kicks in this game, that's a major
06:24plus, but you also muffed a kickoff return, it did not turn into a turnover luckily, and
06:30you also committed a really bad mistake by punting the ball into the end zone when Seattle
06:33had no one back late in the game that made the game-winning touchdown drive that much
06:37easier, because they didn't really give up points immediately off of special teams, it's
06:42not terrible, a C for me, but still, they're not making much progress.
06:45I'm going A-plus for the special teams, because this is the first time that they didn't make
06:51me throw my remote control off my balcony.
06:55And remote control to replace, a C-plus, and I do look at the opening kickoff of the second
07:00half, they actually bounced one, they kicked it short of the goal line and made it a little
07:04bit more difficult, Garendo had a couple of good kick returns in the game, so they're
07:09starting to show some signs there, and the muff punt, while hilarious and not damaging,
07:15it was yet another case of, just catch the ball, C-plus.
07:18Yes, fair enough, and last but not least, it is coaching, you guys have been talking
07:23about this for the last two days, I don't need to add on that much, it's the same story
07:27all year long, no progress, they get an F from me.
07:30It's a D, and that's Lucas in the background.
07:33Lucas just fell off of his chair!
07:35He did a goo-doo in the back.
07:36I had it in a D, defensive court entered a dozen blitz, head coach blows two challenges,
07:43and I know you were almost out of time at the end of the game, but it would have been
07:46nice to have a timeout there, but you challenged twice, and you lost them both, so just not
07:51a real good performance from the coaches.
07:52Once again, once again, an F is for people who barely show up, so Kyle and his mullet,
07:57they were there, but yes, a frustrating lack of adjustments, a frustrating lack of Jordan
08:05Mason, all of the frustration is there, and he's at the top, so yeah, I'm with you, with
08:12a D for the coaching staff.
08:14Man, Grandy come dropping the hammer on Shanahan.
08:17Yeah, he mad, he mad.
08:19Well he started the whole week with text, he's like, alright, where do you focus, give
08:22me one answer, and I was like, I kind of paused because I was driving, and you answered,
08:27and I forget exactly what you said, but you had a couple of nuanced things, and then I
08:31finally got to where I was going, and I'm like, it's Kyle Shanahan, and he's like, that
08:35is the correct answer, so I knew it, I knew it, I knew he was getting an F, I knew he
08:42was getting an F.
