00:00Why
00:01Do we consider it so offensive?
00:04To acknowledge that a quarterback is going to perform at a lower level when everything around him goes wrong
00:12Why is that so bad? I?
00:15Like that's just that's how it is
00:18That's how it is
00:20But even for the greats, I know the Chiefs are still winning
00:24But I can look at like Tyreek Hill left and Patrick Mahomes numbers go down. Yeah, they go down
00:31He's got a lower QBR than Brock Purdy. He's 11th in QBR, which I think is the gold standard of basic quarterback metrics
00:40But he has a defense 13 and 1 he has
00:44People blocking field goals at the end of games. He's got those
00:48Black and white striped people on the field who are helping him
00:52I'm sorry. I couldn't resist left my shirt in the car could have brought it
00:56You know I'm saying Joe Burrow is third in QBR and they're six and eight, right?
01:00It's because he doesn't get help on the other side of the ball because they lose the game 40 to 35, right?
01:05So all of this is so interrelated and that's where as we get into you know, is it Sam or is it Brock?
01:12Well, there's a nice debate to that
01:14But do you also have Christian and Trent and Debo and Brandon like if you want to take this year's team?
01:21And you put Sam in instead of Brock. What would Sam have done this year with?
01:26Jordan and Isaac and
01:28Ricky and Ronnie Ronnie Bobby Ricky and Mike. Thank you
01:32If I love the Brock who cares who you like would he be what are they 12 and 2?
01:38Why don't I ask that a different way?
01:40What do you think the Vikings would be this year if Brock Purdy were their quarterback?
01:45Probably about the same 12 and 2 maybe 11 and 3
01:49Sam's had a better year than Brock, but he's got a better year than Brock, but he's
01:54He's got better weapons
01:55Yeah
01:55He's not a better year than Brock had last year
01:57Right and Sam has never done this before in his career because he's never had this before in his career
02:03So I'm with you on the context needed for this conversation
02:07Through and through because when you have what Sam has this year
02:11Which is a great coach a good o-line the best receiver in football a really good running back and a great scheme
02:18You're gonna have a good year and health and again
02:20We're reacting to Brian balding or on the roast this morning when asked what to do with Brock going forward
02:25He said this I'd say I'd go
02:28Football for Sam Darnold right now Wow
02:32Minnesota like look this is think about Sam for a sec
02:35Except that there's a backup over here. He learned what a first-class franchise game planning
02:40How to build a team like he saw that for the first time in his life now
02:44He's in Kevin O'Connor who's an elite play caller with a very very good offense that has a real style to it
02:49And he's flourishing Minnesota doesn't have to commit anything to him right now all they're doing
02:54I talked to the general manager two weeks ago Kwesi. Oh, you can play it out. They've got a quarterback
02:59They drafted they don't have to give them top flight money or they could trigger like I would be
03:05Having a conversation with Minnesota to see what it would take to get Sam Darnold back. He's a bigger
03:11Stronger more athletic
03:13I don't know
03:13But he's bigger stronger than what Brock is or can play with both of them at a modicum of salary and afford both
03:21And I don't know have a competition. Yeah, I don't see any of those
03:26Ideas as realistic first of all you can't trade for Sam Darnold
03:29He's about to be a free agent
03:31And you can't trade for him this year for a few reasons trade deadline is passed
03:35I'm pretty sure the Vikings would like to actually play in the playoffs with him
03:38So and then the idea of bringing him in next year and having some competition
03:43While one's making 30 million and the other one's gonna be screaming for a long-term extension. Come on, man
03:48This is not realistic. Like this is not Madden. This is not the schoolyard. This is the National Football League
03:54It's a billion dollar industry and as Steve Kerr our guest later today would tell you people's jobs are on the line
04:00We're not gonna turn this in to a complete clown show. I'm not telling you that it's a crazy sort of thought
04:06I'm telling you that it's not really doable. And so here's here's what I don't hear
04:12A lot of people acknowledge that I think the 49ers know
04:16in their heart of hearts
04:19They have no choice
04:22They have no choice in this right now
04:24There is no other good option on the table for the 49ers now
04:29That does not mean that you just need to cower at the feet of Brock and give him 60 million dollars
04:35You need to have an adult conversation in negotiation
04:38And yes, you could go another way if you want
04:41But there's no other way for the 49ers to compete at a high level next year
04:44Well, the only other way would be to sign Sam Darnold as a free agent or roll the dice with some of the other free
04:50Agents who are all C level at best and I ran down the list yesterday
04:54I don't even want to bring it up again because it made my stomach turn
04:57Because it's a bunch of Jameis Winston's and Trey Lance's on that list and they aren't really good proven quarterbacks
05:04Not as good or proven as Brock Purdy. So your choices are go in the draft. Lots of luck or
05:13Sign Brock Purdy and if you do sign Brock Purdy the salary doesn't kick in till the next year
05:17But he would get a nice signing bonus
05:19So you can create a contract where Brock Purdy gets a lot of money in a bonus upfront
05:24you prorate it throughout the cap through the life of the deal and then the base salary kicks in the next year or
05:30You can say to Brock
05:32Play it on the 1 million which you won't do or you can go out and bring in Sam Darnold as a free agent and let
05:37Them compete which you won't do so I'm with you mark. You really have no
05:42Plausible choice on what you're gonna do. You're gonna sign Brock Purdy
05:46You're gonna pay him. It's a question of structure of the deal and how big the deal is. Um, this is an interesting
05:53Let's go to the phones, but this is an interesting text that just came through Comcast business text line 7 1 4
05:58Thank you for listening and texting. Why don't they say it's the system with Darnold?
06:03It is the system with Darnold. It completely is
06:05It's a system with everyone except for Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson
06:10Well, I would say yeah, and I guess what people would respond and say those guys are the system
06:15But even them even them you better have some solid offensive line play now Lamar can run away from it
06:21But he can't just beat the other 11 guys all the time every play
06:26He's also got time
06:28He's he delivers the football way better than people give him credit for
06:32Lamar's an incredibly smart player and a dynamic one at that. So is Josh Allen
06:38I don't really like here's the other thing. I know everybody wants those players
06:42I don't really I'm not obsessed with the idea that my favorite football team has to have one of those guys if
06:50They're available sure
06:52But like I'm not gonna sit here and compare every quarterback in the NFL to Lamar Josh and Patrick
06:59They're not those guys right? They're not and how do you can still win a Super Bowl with someone else?
07:04Of course
07:05it's not easy to do it and not that many of them have done it and you and I ran down the list a couple of
07:09weeks ago of
07:11Quarterbacks who aren't elite who win the Super Bowl and Nick Foles was one of them
07:14I think that was the last one going back
07:16But you know based on how good your team is you can do it Brock was close to doing it last year and a lot
07:23Of it is I think the structure and you look at Josh Allen
07:27He has the second fewest sack percentage in the league
07:30He's only sacked on 3% of
07:32Dropbacks and Jordan love Bo Nix is only sacked 4% of the time young quarterback good old line
07:39Gets rid of the ball
07:40That's what you want Brock Purdy is right about average on how often he gets sacked because the offensive line has not been good
07:47Let's talk to some people out there. Hey Matt and San Rafael. Thanks for calling. What's going on?
07:54Matt you there
07:57Matty I hear you
07:59All right, I'm gonna put Matt back on hold you can see Lucas if you can grab him
08:04Let's go to Raymond in Richmond. Hi Raymond. Thanks for calling
08:09Willard and did was up guys. Thanks for taking my call. What's going on?
08:14I
08:15Just want to say like, you know, I respect Baldy's opinion, but please give me some of whatever he's smoking man
08:22like I
08:24would I
08:25Would say if the Miners thought that Sam Donald was better than Brock Purdy
08:29Brock would be in Minnesota right now and Sam would be quarterbacking for us. I
08:35Just think his fault is the system around him and nobody's saying he got you know
08:39They've kept saying Brock has the Avengers around him. I think you could say the same thing about Sam Donald right now
08:44I just think the fall from grace is gonna be hard when he actually shows who he really is
08:49And we're gonna be just fine with Brock and we're gonna pay him and we're gonna move on. Thanks guys. I appreciate the time Raymond
08:55Thank you very much
08:57Appreciate that. I I don't know if Minnesota is the Avengers
09:00I don't know if the 49ers were actually the Avengers right like we said that last year
09:06Christian McCaffrey is at the top of the league Trent Williams is
09:10Brandon IU did not start last year as an Avenger
09:13He came out of the year as one was that because of Brandon or was because of what was going on around him and the
09:18Calls that were being called and the way Debo what was was able to play like I I don't know man again
09:25I just look at all of these guys through the same exact prism and to me
09:30It's not a criticism of them to say that yes
09:34You're better if everything around you is better and you're worse if everything around you is worth Sam is in a wonderful situation
09:40Right now and then credit him for stepping into that role and crushing it right and going 12 and 2
09:46Sam has always been I thought a really good player and if given the right circumstance
09:52He can do this and I think the same about Brock and I don't need to prove it because it's already happened
09:58Exactly and I think when you look at Brock Purdy you look at last year and you look at this year and for me
10:04Will the real Brock Purdy please stand up, please stand up
10:07He's probably somewhere in between because you're not gonna have a lot of years like last year where you have virtually no injuries
10:15I know a couple guys missed a couple games here and there
10:17But you had Christian and George and Brandon and Debo and Trent and Kyle
10:22Usecheck and the majority of your own line. You had them all on offense. You didn't really have injuries this year
10:28You had a ton of them and Brock Purdy suffered from that
10:31He's getting his pocket is not as clean and his weapons aren't as good and the schedule is tougher
10:37So these are not excuses, but it's reality. So is he as good as last year? No, is he as bad as this year?
10:43No
10:43he's somewhere in between and I look at a quarterback like Jared Goff for me is a great example and the year he has had
10:50and he is top eight and just about everything because
10:55His offensive coordinator his play designer Ben Johnson is really really good
11:00Their locker room is off the charts in terms of chemistry
11:03They've been incredibly healthy up until Sunday when they lost David Montgomery
11:07I know their tight end it was out for a handful of games, but they've got elite receivers elite running backs
11:14Great play caller health and all the rest of it. And so all those things together lead you to have a really good year
11:20Yeah, what's up? Candy? What do you got?
11:21Well, it is you brought up like all quarterbacks for the system
11:24Maybe other than Josh Allen and Lamar and maybe you could throw Burrow or Mahomes in there
11:29They got me thinking do you remember the the way that the Ravens negotiated the contract with Lamar?
11:34They were so hesitant to pay him. They were open to trading him
11:38They offered him the franchise tag and then they eventually finally realized that they should probably sign him
11:43but you're talking about one of the greatest quarterbacks in the NFL and the team that
11:47Drafted and developed him and has gone deep into the playoffs
11:49Well kind of deep in the playoffs with him a number of times even they were hesitant to give a major money
11:54No, like that's just what team should do right MVP right at that. Yeah. Yes
11:59He had and then he won another one after he signed it
12:01And I would also say like yes, you should always and I think the Niners will be no different on this
12:06I I wonder that specific situation
12:09You're bringing up if there weren't some circumstances in play because it was right after the Deshaun Watson
12:14Thing in Cleveland and I do think that Lamar was kind of like I think he was
12:20Negotiating off of that and the Ravens were like look we love you. We want you to be our quarterback
12:26We're not doing that
12:28Cuz that's the stupidest thing any NFL team has ever done
12:31Yeah
12:32But the Niners and Brock Curry will be negotiating off of Dak Prescott and off of Trevor Lawrence and off of Tua
12:37No, but but but those that's where the fans go
12:40Oh, it's 60 a year and it's not like the Sean's guarantee was
12:45235 Doc's is only like what half that and so
12:51That's all that I think is gonna happen here
12:53the 49ers are gonna do a deal with Brock Purdy and it's gonna have a it's gonna have wiggle room and
12:58If and if he's not good two years from now, they'll get out of it
13:02They'll get out of it and it'll happen exactly like what the Giants did with Daniel John agreed if it's not good
13:08They'll get out of it, but I think that they think he's not Daniel Jones
13:12He's not he's not better
13:14And I do think the Lamar one is a little curious because a lot of his greatness
13:19I think was born out of athleticism and there were questions internally about whether or not he could be a pocket passer
13:26Can he win games from the pocket and well, he's gone on in the last two years and shown that yes, he can
13:32Well, and can he stay healthy long term? That's always when somebody runs a lot. That's always the question
13:37It's like do we sign you until you're 33 years old and and and you lose a step and you get hit more and all
13:44Of those things by the way, we should apologize to Matt in San Rafael because his name is Chris in San Rafael
13:51No wonder why I didn't answer Lucas director of sports
13:55Come on, he's not the director of names. No Kyle Shanahan supposed to take accountability whenever something doesn't go, right? Am I right?
14:04Wow, oh, yeah hand up that's on me. All right. Thank you. Uh, hi Chris. Thank you for calling and thank you for being called Matt
14:12Hey guys. Hey one big for taking my call to I apologize
14:16I don't actually have a different take than anything. I've heard in the last 45 minutes is just beating a dead horse. No, that's okay
14:24Like whatever he's smoking it's got to be good and that dude needs to share we eat Baltic birdie is already proven in the last
14:31Couple years he's legit
14:33You give him weapons who are healthy not missing a game where he's missing not one not two
14:38But three of his starting receivers not having CMC out there
14:41Who is the number one running back in the NFL and if that ain't the case, he's at least one of them
14:47Like if you have no weapons and you have no offensive line except for one Hall of Fame tackle
14:52You don't have an offense and one quarterback can't make that up. You put Patrick Mahomes in this year
14:57I don't think it's much better frankly
15:00Patrick Mahomes is only carried by the Zebras and by his defense. Patrick Mahomes
15:05Look at the numbers is not playing better than Brock this year
15:09Like again, I know that'll bother people because of the standings Chris. Thank you very much
15:14Let me add this to the conversation
15:16here's here's I think another part of it because I am I am seeing some engagement with the idea of
15:22Look Baldy kind of said it in a funny way, but you guys understand what he actually means
15:27They can move on from Purdy and sign Sam you can do that
15:31Yes, you can and you know what if you want them to do that, let's hear from you
15:35I would love to hear you state your case and understand where you're coming from on that 8 at 8 9 5 7 9 5 70
15:43But understand this I think about franchises
15:48This is one of the things for example that I would argue the Los Angeles Lakers just as an example
15:53They go too far with this, but they are so concerned the Warriors are too
15:57They're so concerned with how star players around the league view them
16:03That they will make sure at all times that they are treating their players
16:09contractually and otherwise a certain way and you do not make a mockery of
16:15People who have achieved for your organization
16:18So the idea of next year well after what Brock Purdy has done in three seasons as a pro a
16:25Super Bowl and two NFC title games and he has everyone in that locker room behind him the idea of the 49ers looking at him
16:32and going
16:33That's adorable. We really appreciate it
16:36We're now gonna make you our backup for one year at 1.1 million, and then we're gonna decline you
16:42Anything going forward and we're gonna sweep you out the door
16:45And we're gonna bring in last year's backup and guarantee him 30 million dollars next year and a three-year contract
16:52To be the starter in front of you simply because last year you were good rather than great
16:57How do you think the players would view the 49ers?
17:02That is a joke of an idea. Yeah, yeah
17:06Look like absolute morons and it as opposed to being an organization that takes care of its own
17:14Even though that sometimes can come across as a mistake and maybe giving Brandon Iuke 30 million a year not fully guaranteed
17:20But 30 million that may be a mistake, but around the league that's seen as taking care of your guy
17:26You look at all the restructures they've done
17:28And I do think that Javon Hargrave is an interesting one where you restructured him
17:32You give money up front and you're probably gonna end up cutting him in the offseason
17:36But you at least gave him some money before you did that and you've seen that with a bunch of different players and players will take
17:42Those restructures because it's cash in hand and it helps the team and that's the way you do business
17:47so you take Brock Purdy who's been
17:50Really good as your quarterback and you bring in a journeyman to replace him for one year his backup exactly last year's backup
17:58Yeah, that's probably not gonna be a good message
18:00I mean Sam Sam is good Sam should not sort of I mean even last year
18:04The reason the Niners were so quick to sign him as their backup in free agency right away on yeah
18:10Well, there was two reasons. I thought number one
18:13They clearly there was some discomfort with everything that was going on with the trail and situation number one and number two
18:20I don't think they thought that Brock was for sure gonna be ready to go by the beginning of the year
18:25So they wanted somebody who they thought you know, what if we need to play him for a month?
18:29Can he go two and two or three and one for us and Sam can do that?
18:32He's proven that so that's why they brought in Sam. They like Sam
18:37I don't think you're crazy
18:38If you think Sam can win in this league when surrounded by a very good system a good coach good players
18:45He's proving right now that he can do that. But Brock Purdy has proven the exact same thing
18:50So to me, this is just me if you want to replace Brock Purdy
18:55You better be talking about like Josh Allen has to be available. Sam's not an upgrade on Brock
19:00well
19:00Nobody is available who is an upgrade and you we don't need to play the list game and list all the quarterbacks who would be
19:06An upgrade and you know, Tom Brady's probably not walking through that door anymore
19:11But that's somebody that they wanted before and he's not available and Aaron Rodgers is too old
19:16And so all the quarterbacks who would be an upgrade none of them are available
19:20Lateral moves sure, and if you want to call Kirk Cousins a lateral move
19:24Well, he's not available either. The only one would be Sam Darnold if he even springs free
19:29The Vikings can franchise him and then he's not available. So there is no other available quarterback
19:35Grandi say that on the air. What'd you just say say that go find the next Sam Darnold
19:39Okay, tell me what that looks like. What do you and what do you even mean by that?
19:42Well, Sam Darnold is going to make a decent amount this offseason
19:46So that obviously is a point against him if you're trying to build a roster if you're trying to bring somebody in to compete
19:52With some other quarterback, but you signed Sam Darnold two offseasons ago for what like four point five million dollars
19:58I think it was more but it's the high-level backup money like that. Yeah, and no one really thought much of it
20:05Right go find the next Sam Darnold who's about ready to when you get him in the right spot
20:09He's gonna take off and flourish and become a brand new quarterback. Oh, they didn't already do that by drafting Brock Purdy as mr
20:15Irrelevant and going to two NFC title games and a Super Bowl like is Brock Purdy in the last three years. He's not
20:23Flourishing. Oh, yeah, he has been but now you're gonna have to pay him. You just don't want a million dollars
20:28So for you, it's money you want to find this kind of production for a lot less dough. That's the dream. Yeah, that's the dream
20:35Unfortunately, like I I I can I can sit here and like nod my head like that'd be great
20:40I don't think that exists
20:42Well, we can play the backup quarterback game and we can look at the list of backups who were in Sam Darnold spot
20:48And you've got well Jimmy Garoppolo's one. He he's a guy you could get
20:54Kenny Pickett and
20:56Carson Wentz, I think what what we're Andy Dalton what you're asking for is
21:01Baker or
21:03Sam or in theory
21:05Brock if he had not had so much playoff achievement and next year would only come in 30
21:11Is there somebody laying in the weeds who you could have for a lot less?
21:16But you can still produce because here I'll say something out loud that maybe will surprise you guys. You don't think I'll say this
21:22Brock's replaceable
21:24Everyone's replaceable. He's very replaceable
21:27He is not the only one who can do this with Kyle Shanahan
21:32But there aren't 20
21:34There aren't 20 of them. There's probably 10 and none of them are available, right?
21:39so if you want to try to find the next Sam Darnold and bring him in you're talking about somebody's backup and you're looking at
21:46Joe Flacco or drew lock or
21:49Jacoby Brissett or Jameis Winston, you're looking at guys who have warts and they don't have the accomplishments that Brock has
21:56They're going to be more expensive and then what so even if you land a guy, right?
22:01Maybe it's Josh Dobbs. You realize that it's Dobbsy
22:04So you give Dobbs the gig or you bring them both back?
22:07You don't pay Brock and you make them compete and Dobbs wins the job
22:10Okay, you go seven and ten next year then what better take that backup quarterback commercial off the air
22:16I'm looking at that if you bring it in Josh Dobbs to about 25 million dollar starter
