00:00Some shows you can hear people laughing and some you can't.
00:02Wonder Years, no one's laughing. Is it funny? We'll never know."
00:05Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today we're counting down our picks
00:09for the ways Georgie and Mandy's first marriage reminds us
00:12it's part of the ever-expanding The Big Bang Theory universe,
00:15and how it's chosen to stand apart from its predecessor, Young Sheldon.
00:19You're really wonderful, Georgie Cooper.
00:21I know, I am what you call a catch.
00:23Number 5. Continues, It Picks Up From Where Young Sheldon Ended
00:28In the final season of Young Sheldon, the family loses its beloved patriarch,
00:32and Sheldon heads to Caltech. Georgie and Mandy, who had been living with Connie,
00:37face a tough reset after a hurricane, and Connie's arrest leaves them with nothing.
00:42They shut everything down.
00:44So what are we gonna do for money?
00:46Yeah, that's an excellent question.
00:51How was Dollywood?
00:53Magical. What are we gonna do about money?
00:55Forced to start fresh, they move in with Mandy's parents,
00:58which is where we find them now.
00:59Not much time seems to have passed, with Georgie and Missy still processing their grief.
01:04I really miss you.
01:11Feel better?
01:12No, you jerk!
01:13We also see Mandy's father Jim offer Georgie a job at his tire store,
01:17a stepping stone on the path to Georgie's future tire empire.
01:20Yet, for now, Georgie's focused on helping the business thrive
01:23without clashing too much with his co-worker, Reuben.
01:26Hey, I'm not giving orders. I'm just a lowly smurf working for his lordship.
01:32Lowly surf?
01:33No, I'm pretty sure it's smurf.
01:35Number 5. Different.
01:37The writers have more freedom with the narrative.
01:39When creating Young Sheldon, the writers had to follow the storyline set by the parent series,
01:44keeping Sheldon's life more or less aligned with what fans already know.
01:48Imagine all the stimulating conversations that must go on at these tables.
01:53I bet.
01:53I can see myself going here one day.
01:57I think you'd fit right in.
01:58But this time, they have more creative freedom.
02:01All we know is that this is Georgie and Mandy's first marriage,
02:04so there's a good chance there'll be another.
02:06This flexibility lets the writers focus on the couple's natural chemistry
02:10and see where their relationship heads organically.
02:13I promise I'll get us out of here.
02:19How?
02:24Yeah, simple. I'll make a lot of money.
02:30Yeah, but how?
02:31Showrunner Steve Holland credits the easy chemistry between actors
02:34Montana Jordan and Emily Osment for inspiring this direction.
02:38Elsewhere, co-creator Chuck Lorre joked that it's a nice break
02:41to write for characters who aren't quite as intense as Sheldon.
02:44And then I was thinking about inventing a new dark matter particle
02:48to evade the Omega-Baryon constraints,
02:50but that just seems like something anyone could come up with.
02:54Agreed.
02:55Number four continues.
02:57Is Connor the new Sheldon?
02:59Remember Mandy's brother Connor from season six of Young Sheldon?
03:03Now, just go ahead and forget nearly everything you remember about him,
03:06including the actor.
03:07Music?
03:21That Connor was a too-cool-for-school vegetarian artist.
03:25This one is a quirky musician.
03:27And when we say quirky, who comes to mind?
03:30Yep, Sheldon.
03:371, 2, 3, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 1, 2.
03:40It's impossible to dance to.
03:42Lorre might be glad to spend less time researching Sheldon-appropriate content,
03:46but he's seemingly not ready to retire the eccentric character type just yet.
03:50And why would he, given its past success?
03:52This new Connor is a socially awkward music fanatic
03:56who fits into his family as well as, well, he doesn't.
03:59It's early days, but there's definitely a touch of Sheldon about him.
04:02So what was it?
04:04Sorry, you're out of questions.
04:07You're really not gonna tell us?
04:09Thanks for playing.
04:11You get back here right now and you tell us!
04:16I don't know why you like him.
04:17Number 4.
04:18Different.
04:19It's closer in tone to The Big Bang Theory than Young Sheldon.
04:22Without Young Sheldon, there wouldn't be First Marriage.
04:25As Lorre put it, they wanted this new show to, quote,
04:28stand on its own two feet,
04:30so viewers wouldn't necessarily need to have seen the other two series first.
04:33I hope you know you can always come live with me.
04:36Oh, thank you, but it's way past time for us to be on our own.
04:39Are you sure?
04:40Take a hint.
04:41She doesn't like you.
04:42While Young Sheldon was mostly family-friendly,
04:45First Marriage is bringing back the kind of humor and storylines
04:48that were common in The Big Bang Theory.
04:50That doesn't mean it's lost the balance of comedy,
04:52drama, and sentimentality that Young Sheldon did so well.
04:56Sometimes you remind me of my dad.
05:00Well, that's quite the compliment.
05:02I didn't really hug him when I had the chance.
05:07Now come here.
05:11Instead, it takes the successful elements from both
05:14and adapts them to this new format.
05:16As the characters have grown up,
05:17it only makes sense that the show's tone has matured with them.
05:21Well, let me make it up to you.
05:22No, cut it out.
05:24The Georgie store is closed.
05:29Yeah, I never thought I'd be doing this.
05:31Yeah, I never thought Mandy'd be the one to blow this up.
05:34Me neither.
05:36But I'll take it.
05:37Number three continues,
05:39picking up their Young Sheldon trajectory.
05:41Earlier, we mentioned how First Marriage picks up
05:43where Young Sheldon ended.
05:45But I can still remember it exactly the way it was
05:47the day I left for Caltech.
05:49Hey.
05:53What are you doing?
05:55Taking it all in one last time,
05:57so I remember it when I'm older.
05:58Though that series was originally about Sheldon,
06:01it quickly became an ensemble show
06:03as the Coopers welcomed us into their family.
06:05By the time Mandy came along,
06:07it felt like Sheldon's storyline was losing steam.
06:09So this pivot gave the writers a chance to revive their creativity.
06:13I'm Georgie.
06:14Mandy.
06:15And now that we're on a first-name basis,
06:17I'm gonna throw my underwear in here.
06:19And since I'm a gentleman, I ain't gonna look.
06:21It's hard to believe that Osment was only meant to be a guest star.
06:24However, her great chemistry with Jordan
06:26expanded her role to include a baby,
06:28a marriage,
06:29and eventually a spinoff.
06:31We've watched this couple step into parenthood and married life
06:34with all its challenges.
06:36Essentially, the premise for the spinoff was already set in motion.
06:40I'm just trying to help.
06:41I told you we don't need your help.
06:43We don't.
06:44What do you think?
06:47Well.
06:49Number three, different.
06:51New characters and relationships.
06:53While Young Sheldon mainly focused on Georgie's family,
06:57this time, the McAllisters take center stage.
06:59Hope y'all are hungry.
07:01Nice of the kid to make breakfast.
07:04This is where you say,
07:05Thank you, Georgie.
07:06Oh, that ain't necessary.
07:08See, that ain't necessary.
07:10We get a deeper look at Mandy's bond with her dad
07:13and the tension with her mom.
07:15Meanwhile, Georgie's usually happy-go-lucky attitude
07:18starts to crack under the pressure.
07:19I may not have been completely honest about having everything under control.
07:24Truth is, I'm flying by the seat of my pants.
07:27My pants are on fire.
07:28Adding to the mix, Connor, who also still lives at home,
07:32brings a more unhinged energy
07:33that could even make Sheldon take a huge step back.
07:36Also, Georgie grew into this super likable guy
07:39who seemed like he could get along with almost anyone.
07:42So now, working alongside Ruben,
07:43a colleague who's not a fan of nepotism,
07:46we have a chance to see a side of Georgie we haven't seen before.
07:49Ruben said if I let it fall, bad things will happen.
07:54Missy, hang on a sec.
07:57Son, there is no such thing as a transmission fluid recirculator.
08:01Then what am I holding?
08:03I've no idea.
08:03Number two continues, exploring family dynamics.
08:07Even though things have shifted a bit from young Sheldon,
08:10Georgie and Mandy are still figuring out their relationship within the family.
08:14Boy, she pisses me off.
08:18Oh, me too.
08:20The sooner we get out of here, the better.
08:22Well, we're saving money.
08:24We got built-in babysitters.
08:26I don't care.
08:26Every day I'm in this house with her, a little piece of me dies.
08:29We just gotta make sure it ain't my favorite pieces.
08:32Like we said before, young Sheldon wasn't just about Sheldon.
08:35It was about the whole family growing individually and together.
08:38And that's still true here.
08:40Mandy and Georgie are still finding their way as a couple
08:43and as part of the McAllister family.
08:45Hey, you can call me whatever you want,
08:47but you do not insult my daughter or accuse my wife of having hormones.
08:52Start packing, we're out of here.
08:54Plus, the friction between Mandy and Audrey is just as intense as we remember,
08:58and Georgie's still working hard to win her approval.
09:01Since they are still in Medford, you can tell, especially early on,
09:05that Georgie feels like he has to step up and hold things together for the Coopers, too.
09:09This is weird.
09:10Just talk to her.
09:12I really think you'll feel better.
09:13I think I'll feel stupid.
09:15Hey, I didn't tell Mom about you getting suspended.
09:17The least you can do is tell Dad.
09:18Number 2.
09:20Different.
09:20Giving Mandy more of a backstory.
09:22In Young Sheldon, we learn that Mandy was a former weather girl
09:25who moved back to Medford after breaking up with her boyfriend,
09:28who also happened to be her boss.
09:30So you were on TV?
09:325.30 every morning.
09:33More people are seeing me right here.
09:35Why'd you leave?
09:36The station manager and I broke up.
09:39But now his new girlfriend gets to be on TV at 8.30.
09:42She mentioned wanting to go back to school and pursue a career,
09:45but we never really knew much else about her life before she met Georgie.
09:49I want a career.
09:50I support that.
09:53Then maybe go back to school.
09:56Curveball, but okay.
09:59I don't have to go back to school, do I?
10:01No, sweetheart.
10:03First Marriage explores this more,
10:05starting with her credit card debt and hinting at other secrets, hers and Georgie's.
10:10If there's anything you need to tell me, now's the time.
10:13Nothin'.
10:15What about you?
10:17Nothin'.
10:17What you say is what you get.
10:20Love you.
10:21Love you too.
10:27There's also a storyline where the stress in Georgie's life catches up with him,
10:30and he fears he's having a heart attack,
10:32only to learn it's actually a panic attack.
10:35Clearly, there's much more to Georgie than we've seen so far.
10:38You do have a lot going on.
10:40No, I don't.
10:41Georgie?
10:42I'm fine.
10:43You just lost your dad.
10:45You got a brand new baby.
10:46Your sister's struggling.
10:48An unemployed wife.
10:49You got no money.
10:50Okay, okay.
10:51Number 1 continues.
10:53Cameos from the Young Sheldon cast.
10:56We loved seeing the original Big Bang crew pop up
10:59in various ways throughout Young Sheldon.
11:00Since when do you go out of your way to make other people happy?
11:05How about once a year on your birthday?
11:08Other than that, when?
11:09What better way to start a family than to
11:11celebrate the birth of a new family?
11:14What better way to honor its roots and the fans
11:16than with some guest appearances?
11:18Guest spots from Zoey Perry and Annie Potts as Mary and Connie
11:21helped connect the tone and style of both series,
11:24reminding us that they're all part of the same universe
11:26we've grown so attached to.
11:28Mary, to toast the new house?
11:30I can toast with ginger ale.
11:32Jesus drank wine.
11:33Because they didn't have Schweppes.
11:35Reagan Reward's return as Missy ties back to what Georgie
11:38once told Sheldon about their sister.
11:40Mom was a miss.
11:41We'll always warmly welcome any familiar face.
11:44The Coopers and their extended circle may not be the main focus,
11:48but they're still finding ways to keep them involved, and we love it.
11:51Thanks for cooking dinner for my mom and me, Mom.
11:54It was good to see him.

12:11Number 1.
12:12Different.
12:13Single-cam versus multi-cam.
12:15Did you know they're apparently filming First Marriage
12:17on the same stage where The Big Bang Theory was shot?
12:19In the summer, it's directly in the path of a cross breeze,
12:22created by opening windows there and there.
12:24It faces the television at an angle that isn't direct,
12:26so we can still talk to everybody,
12:27yet not so wide that the picture looks distorted.
12:30This isn't the only similarity between the two series either,
12:32with First Marriage returning to the same multi-cam format
12:35the parent series used.
12:37The pilot wastes no time reminding us of this shift,
12:40setting the tone and a new brand of humor right away.
12:43Some shows you can hear people laughing and some you can't.
12:46Wonder years.
12:47No one's laughing.
12:48Is it funny?
12:48We'll never know.
12:50I prefer to laugh when I choose to.
12:53Really?
12:54I ain't never seen you laugh.
12:55It's a smart move to make the show feel different but still familiar.
12:59Now, while Osment has plenty of experience in front of a live audience,
13:02this is Jordan's first time.
13:04Honestly, you'd never guess it.
13:06He fits right in, and it feels like he's been doing it his whole career.
13:10Thanks for listening.
13:14Hey, maybe you can ask the big guy to keep an eye on your daughter.
13:17Send an angel.
13:18Get her in the army.
13:19Something.
13:19Hurry.
13:20What do you make of Georgie and Mandy's first marriage so far?
13:23Let us know in the comments.
13:24If there's anything you need to tell me, now's the time.
