Is Jerod Mayo the right guy going forward? What's
Ty Law's thoughts on Mayo's coaching and Maye's future development?
Transcript
00:00And the pro football Hall of Famer Ty Law joins us this morning. Hello Ty
00:06Good morning guys. How you doing? Doing great, by the way
00:11Excellent Instagram story from you over the weekend with Bill Belichick. Where were you?
00:17Well, I was down in New Orleans man down in New Orleans. We were down in
00:22Our old stomping grounds were we started the dynasty at the first Super Bowl man was first
00:27I think that was the first time I've been back in that place since that game man
00:31So, uh, it was good to see Bill was good to be back down in New Orleans. I ate well, man
00:35It's some good. Hey, it's some good ass food down there, bro
00:39Did Bill say he misses us or?
00:45You know what
00:57You did get a hundred bucks out of him for the swear jar so that was well done that was well done. Oh
01:04Yeah, yeah, you know
01:07Bill he probably filled up as much as I would you know, we do we was doing our thing down there doing a little something
01:13for the
01:14Upcoming Super Bowl wait till you guys see it man, but you know when you got to do your takes man, Bill
01:19He always gonna throw out one with you. Oh, yeah, you know, you know
01:21I could I could have got a lot more than that. I'm like damn bill any gossip about the whole lot to the foundation
01:29Tie any gossip about his next steps as a head coach anything. I sneak out when you guys were talking
01:37Yeah, but I'm not gonna tell you
01:43See Bill wasn't thinking about a return to coaching. Mm-hmm, then I don't think anything
01:49I think he would have shut it right down and I would just tell us that he shut it. Yeah, that's interesting
01:54That's an interesting response
01:57Yeah, but I got to give you something to keep on talking about what kind of guy would I be?
02:01What kind of friend would I be the tail our damn conversation?
02:05I mean bill conversation, but guess what? I do have certain it open. I don't want to give it to you now
02:12Okay, hypothetically speaking if you were to get bill Belichick a coat a car would it be a Jaguar it?
02:19with a
02:22Curtis I'm from the hood. I don't go for the bull. So let's move on
02:44So a lot to talk about after the blowout Sunday in Miami
02:48I'm gonna start with what you were like
02:51after a loss and this story that from not from
02:56one troublemaker, but from several media members who were in that locker room and found themselves surprised
03:05with how
03:08Cheery and
03:10smiley and
03:12happy
03:14Some of those guys were what were you like after a loss and is that an issue for you when it comes to the way
03:20They reacted
03:22Man, that that bothers the hell out of me Greg
03:25I mean if you you go out there to do a job
03:27We I mean if you put you know
03:29Your heart and the soul of something every day and every week preparing for the game and you go out there lose
03:35You're not supposed to be happy. You're not supposed to be smiling now. It ain't the end of the world
03:40You know you live to play another
03:42Another game, you know live another day, but at the same time take some pride in what you do
03:49You know when you're out there that I had a situation like that in New York
03:53I think I can't believe what I'm seeing here
03:55you know what I mean and it would just just a
03:58Culture and energy wasn't what I was used to because a loss is just another day, you know at the office
04:04No, that's not it's not acceptable
04:06I mean you're trying to go out there and win so and when you have putting on a performance like that and
04:12The season is going like this going. No one should be smiling around there. No one should be smiling
04:17Maybe maybe a couple of a smile known check day. That's about it
04:24Should nobody be smiling up in there nor should none of any of the coaches be smiling in my opinion, man
04:30I just love them Tuesday check days a tie. How does
04:35Gerardo
04:36Cuz you and I both think he's a good coach, but how does he?
04:41Change that
04:42Culture where if you have some players that you know could be like that in the locker room
04:49How does he change the culture?
04:51to
04:53You know fix that issue. I
04:56Mean one
04:59For Girardi's like, you know what?
05:02Sometime as a coach you got to take the pressure even though they're the ones on the field
05:07Take the pressure off him say it's on me
05:09I got to do a better job and then that might give some of those players like man coaches coaches riding force
05:15We got to do better for I mean because he's getting a lot of getting a lot of flack for
05:22Saying what he said afterwards like he can't do it
05:24I don't know what the exact quote was
05:26But I've been hearing it everywhere and every way talking about it because y'all refresh my memory as far as uh, what do you say?
05:33Once the players cross the white lines, he can't do anything for them
05:39See and now we we know what he's talking about. Mm-hmm. See we know what he talked about
05:44We saying it's like hey, we did everything we had to do through the week
05:48Hey, we give you the best game plan
05:50or you know
05:50we thinking we put you in the best situation to succeed with the game plan and with the
05:55Prep week and I can't do nothing for you because he can't go out there and tackle
05:59When and do none of that and make an impact on the field
06:02But that is the wrong thing to say when you're talking to the consumer who's watching the fan
06:09They don't understand. What are you saying? What do you mean? Yes, you can do something because you got a coach
06:13You got a coach, but you got to call a better place
06:15But we knew as players would it would he meant you know what I mean?
06:19So I think that he needs to you know, come across a little bit different think about you know
06:26Before he said because you're not just talking to you know your team that is something that you can say in the locker room
06:31But you can't say that out because he's leaving the door open for everybody to come in and chime in and speculation
06:37This and that who's never probably even been in a locker room before
06:41Robert Kraft is out on a limb
06:43I think with Gerard Mayo because he suggested that he identified him as
06:49Bill's replacement five years ago, but
06:52Is he wiggy said, you know tie you agree with me he's a good coach is is he the right guy
06:58to run this organization going forward and if not, are you wasting valuable time when it comes to the
07:06Development of Drake May if you give him another season
07:12No, I don't think anyone thought even mr. Kraft that he was gonna come in and
07:18And
07:19Change everything right now. They're gonna go back to a winning program. It doesn't happen like that. This is the NFL
07:25It takes time and then when you have a rookie quarterback, yeah, he's playing good for a rookie
07:30But if he was four or five years in the line, do you think that is a great quarterback play?
07:35Let's be honest with ourselves when we're talking about
07:38the team
07:40No, no, he's got a ton. No, he wouldn't break. Yeah, exactly
07:44Because he's a rookie you get a pass and
07:47Rightfully so Gerard is also a rookie when it comes to a head coach
07:51So he's gonna get the benefit of the doubt until he brings his own guys in we got we got to assess players
07:58Okay
08:00Year two for the quarterback year two and three. What are you going to do draw as a head coach?
08:06Who are you going to bring in there?
08:07Are you gonna have money to spend to bring in free agents because New England I'll say it again
08:11It's not a hot destination anymore for veteran players. And if you ain't if you ain't backing up the brink truck, you know
08:18I mean, it's not like that anymore
08:19So you got to give Gerard time to get some of his guys in there as far as the culture
08:25That starts with Gerard now. He's totally responsible for the culture
08:30And who he brings in those leaders in the players in the locker room
08:35They control that and I want to see who's going to step up from a player standpoint and say this is how we're going
08:41To be in this locker room, you know, I mean we gonna leave all the outside noise out
08:45We had we had ten guys in our locker room that would you know?
08:50Manage everything, you know what? I mean bill didn't even have to come downstairs. I don't see that with this team
08:55I mean, they're all over the place. They have so many holes right now
08:58It's gonna be interesting to see what they do in the draft because you know
09:00They're gonna pick high or trade down and load up. I'll tell you that right now
09:04Well, we got too many pieces
09:05We talked about this yesterday a little bit and we used Bill Belichick as an example
09:10But I'll use a different one if Mike Vrabel were the head coach of this football team with their record be different right now
09:19With them players
09:20Yeah
09:22Maybe you know what maybe maybe maybe two games
09:27They gotta have some players, you know, he might have he might have done better from a situational standpoint, you know
09:35The brain of Mike Vrabel, you know in certain situations was dry
09:39This will be new to the being that he has been a head coach
09:42he probably makes some different decisions here and there and might get to get more games out of it, but
09:48We'll be talking about them contending for the playoffs with that roster. I don't think so
09:53Ty we were talking about the the fall-off from the defense yet again in Miami though
09:58And and while it's not fair to compare him to bill
10:01It is fair to talk about the fact that everybody told us going into it. This is a defensive guy
10:06The defense is gonna be great. They're gonna be great
10:09Are you surprised with how bad the defense has gotten in in his rookie season coaching?
10:16you know what I
10:17Thought the defense will be a lot better too and I was putting that on the road to be able to maintain
10:23Certain, you know integrity with the defense. I mean to create a certain culture
10:28When it comes to the defense because he is a defensive guy. He did like to hit people
10:33You know what? I mean, and it's an attitude when it comes to a defensive players
10:37You talk about a defensive coach office coach is an attitude in a mindset when you're talking about defense. So I am
10:44totally shocked
10:46Disappointed and and everything when it comes to the defense because when it comes a secondary play
10:51I'm like how many times you gonna let a receiver get a hundred plus yards. I don't give a damn
10:57That's a smack in the face. You got to have some pride, you know, how many tackles are you gonna miss?
11:01You know, I mean you no communication back there in the secondary. That's what a draw was
11:06He was a quarterback of a defense, you know, he's a linebacker putting everybody in place. So it's like
11:13is
11:14It pisses you off. It's like hey, you you know what it is
11:18Get somebody in there
11:19Even if you got to find a version of yourself to be able to help that defense, you know
11:24I would expect the office to be not as good but defense to be that bad
11:30What head coach like Gerard Mayo who played the position and played the game at a high level?
11:35I don't understand that one that I'm still I'm baffled guys about that one
11:39Ty Wiggy talks often about the culture that you guys had when you first started the dynasty and you know
11:45You and Willie and Teddy and Wiggy and everybody that was able to keep others in line. Is there as
11:52Has Ty I'm sorry has Gerard reached out to you or I mean I feel like it would be a great opportunity
11:57for you guys to go and talk to the team and
12:00Explain, you know what the Patriot culture is and what they should build it back to
12:06You know, we talked about it earlier the gum talk to the the defense and the DB's we just haven't got around
12:12I haven't heard from me, but I mean, you know, they too busy losing getting ass with the call
12:17Yeah, okay, you know, you got a lot going on around there
12:20So you might be too busy to pick up the phone call, but I definitely would go down there and especially that a
12:28Secondary down there. I mean you have a lot of upside and again, you know
12:32He can play once it gets a little bit more consistent. He can play he gonna be a pro bowler for a long time
12:39He needs some he needs some help, you know what I mean? So from a defensive standpoint, you know, I think you know
12:46Getting us down there, you know guys that had success and we played together the way we played, you know
12:51It will be a good idea at some point offseason
12:54To get us down there with those guys and talk to him because I'll be glad to
12:58James has totally changed his behavior since he met you. So you've had a great impact on him. He's been much more focused
13:04he's listened ever since the my son who met you at the the
13:09Bowling event. He's been much more dedicated to his craft. He's been running the right routes. Everything's been going swimmingly
13:15So I thank you for that
13:18Well Curtis the one thing I would say in Tide knows is better than anything is you as a player have to be
13:25Willing to accept that right? You got to be willing to accept the hair from you know
13:31The guys who came before you and maybe a comeback, right?
13:34I'm not sure if there are a lot of guys in that locker room
13:37It means somebody who has the best hands in the NFL may not be listening. Yeah, they might not be receptive to they might be like
13:44Oh, it's just another, you know another old head, you know sitting on his stand on his soapbox trying to lecture us about
13:51You know the game today and so I think that's the biggest thing and I don't know how many of those guys
13:58You said something earlier about Drake made
14:01Do you feel like we are over blowing where he is development wise it like gushing too much I
14:09Think I mean
14:11We we pushing, you know, we push in the car before the horse a little bit, but you think about this
14:16Let's go back to Mac Jones his rookie year. What was everybody saying?
14:21Right, pretty good. It's the it's the it's the sophomore slump
14:26That's what a bunch about what he's going to do the next year because our expectations
14:30From a rookie quarterback ain't too high in the beginning. So anything that he does is like, okay great
14:36We does something he runs and he throws a dart. He throws a great pass. It's overblown. That's what you came here to do
14:43I mean you throw the damn ball. You're supposed to be accurate. But when he makes a mistake, oh, he's a rookie
14:49bonehead rookie mistake, so
14:54You I mean he got the benefit of the doubt regardless now after you get a year under your belt
14:59What are you going to do next year? That's going to tell us what we need to know in year two and year three
15:04That's either going to make you or it's going to break you but right now it's too early to tell because no matter what he
15:10Does you can always fall back on that?
15:13He's a rookie and you don't get too much help and he doesn't have an office of line
15:18So, you know the future is looking good for what he's working with but now that when people figure you out
15:26Next year, let's see what you can do
15:28Start doing a whole training camp as a starter coming into the season
15:32People kind of pegs you from last year when they go back and study the film and you get better
15:36you know from your rookie year, but if you're going to stay right here guys and
15:41You're not getting better because he's not showing me that. Hey, you know, this is the next one. Oh, this is the next great one
15:47No, he's doing he's playing decent rookie ball
15:50And showing some signs, but it ain't it ain't like, you know, you're ready to cash in all your chips on it
15:57No, you know, he's not he's not there yet
15:59Time now for the most entertaining play of the game brought to you by apex entertainment experience the thrills at
16:06apex entertainment in Marlboro, I
16:09like the Austin Hooper
16:11Touchdown that he throws Scranton like kind of get outside the pocket rolling out to his right and then throwing down on who put down
16:17I like the one y'all that or like the ball that Kendrick Bourne through
16:20I know
16:26Wiggy I gotta agree with you. We get me, you know, he found him on the scramble
16:31He looked down still, you know, and you know, it was it was good. It was a good throw
16:35It's a good throw and he threw it pretty far to be on the run, right?
16:38You know can't really give it to Gonzalez cuz you know, you supposed to scoop score that I mean, that's like easy money
16:44If
16:47You wouldn't score that have been a blooper right if he wouldn't score on that when I would that was too easy right there
16:52So you got to give it to Drake may for that and see what plays like that
16:56Goes back to the point before you're going to be like, you know
17:00What we got some here because when you see that he gives you that glimmer of hope
17:04But then he goes off and throws in a session or then he goes off and fumble, you know, okay
17:09Oh, that's just a rookie stuff. No, it's still a fumbling is still in the session
17:13So, you know again, I'm not putting too much into this. I just like the direction that he's going, you know
17:19I think we may have us one but again
17:22Let's let's let's slow down for a little bit not give too much pause because they have a lot of holes to fill
17:28Tie all year I do it but this time of the year, especially I give thanks for you and what you bring to this program
17:34Did we talk to tie before we let him go about?
17:38Did he have any connection with Bryce Underwood the Michigan quarterback who got a boatload of bread
17:45We haven't asked him yet if he contributed to that ten and a half million
17:49man
17:50Hail to the know baby, but I mean Brady didn't say Brady called. Yeah, I think it was talking to Tom
17:59Yeah, see a well, you know
18:01You talking to me is like a man shouldn't you shut the hell up, man?
18:05Brady you know levels of this man. I know when to step back, you know, we're Brady come around
18:10Hey, we all hey, we all fall back a little bit
18:12So, you know, that was the best recruit to that they could ever have if Tom Brady called him
18:17I mean, I think he can pretty much get anybody there
18:20to Michigan they need to
18:21call
18:22Brady to help recruit in New England. Yeah
18:27Focused on the Raiders
18:29I
18:32Don't know by doing that don't abide or a mezzo damn rate
18:36I mean, it's good that he's able to put himself in a position for ownership
18:39I mean really respect that but you know at the end of the day no matter where he's played Tom Brady is a
18:45There's a Patriot man, you know what I mean?
18:47And hell if you can you can use that to get somebody in here man, you better make that call
18:52What are you doing Thursday?
18:55Oh
18:57Mamas I'm going I'm going to PA
19:00Yeah, I'm going I'm going I'm going back home man
19:02So I'm gonna get some that good cook and I'm gonna have to hit the treadmill
19:05For the like five days in a row. It's getting cold outside. I like to work outside
19:09So I'm gonna be I'm gonna be on that treadmill because I know I'm gonna be a fat ass. I'm already I'm already too heavy
19:19Does your mom make one specific thing traditionally every year that you love
19:25You ain't gonna want to hear it is but we
19:38Not the kind you put on top of the stove either
19:43You know what I mean, yeah, not not the kind of stuff and you put on top of the stove
19:48How you put in the oven?
19:52We don't get it in great
19:55All right, well that pineapple juice stripping off that
20:03Give me some dry white turkey that sounds so
20:12And the sandwiches afterwards the ham sandwiches or the next day after all Mary come on man
20:17So good some of that sweet potato with some of that sweet potato juice or yam juice
20:24Juice whichever you prefer. Yeah, I sprinkle that over everything. What's your go-to pie choice? Oh, wow. Oh
20:33Man I
20:35Say that sweet potato sweet potato, man. I mean you got you got to go sweet potato, man
20:40That's because it's tradition. But if they make it right, but all sweet potato pies are
20:45Not created equal I can tell you that you know, I've been had some sweet potato
20:50They didn't just lift too many strings
21:11Yeah, yeah, I do both pumpkins great. All right. Well, happy Thanksgiving. We will talk to you again next week
21:16All right, all right guys that is that is Thai law on a Thai Tuesday
