00:00Good morning, Ty.
00:02Good morning, guys. How you doing, man?
00:04Sorry I couldn't make it in this morning, bro.
00:06What's up with that?
00:08Man, I, uh...
00:10First of all, what is Wiggy going on?
00:12I didn't know about that. Is he okay?
00:14Yeah, he's just having some sort of a thing
00:16done, like a jaw surgery.
00:18A jaw adjacent
00:20surgery thing. It's like a fat pad
00:22on his jaw.
00:24Oh, some jaw. He must have been talking
00:26too much and popped out of place, huh?
00:28I would say yes. Yes.
00:30Yeah. No, well...
00:32I'm a little under the weather
00:34myself, and I gotta stay, you know,
00:36I got a bug and it's bad.
00:38I gotta stay as close to the bathroom
00:40as possible. Oh, boy. Oh, no, Ty.
00:42Yeah.
00:44Wiggy would call that the...
00:46But I can talk, though. I can talk. The bubble guts.
00:48The squeaky deakies. Yep.
00:50That's a lot of Gatorade.
00:52Yeah. Yeah. Make sure that you hydrate.
00:54Pedialyte.
00:56So, I want to start. There's a couple
00:58pieces of audio
01:00that we want to play for you this morning.
01:02I think that
01:04Gerard Mayo has a bit of
01:06an external
01:08quarterback controversy
01:10that is going on. I wonder
01:12though, and I'm interested in your
01:14opinion on this, if
01:16he is about to have
01:18an internal quarterback
01:20controversy on his hands
01:22based on...
01:24This is Jacoby Brissett
01:26on the afternoon show
01:28here at WEI yesterday
01:30talking about how it
01:32is, I'll let him say it, but
01:34disrespectful to suggest
01:36that the reason
01:38Drake May is not the starter is
01:40because of a potential injury.
01:42Here's Jacoby Brissett.
01:44Yeah, it is.
01:46But at the same time, it's like
01:48a lot of those people don't know me. A lot of those people...
01:50So, therefore, I could
01:52not care less, but it's just more of like
01:54why waste my time to worry
01:56about the people that say those things.
01:58And I kind of just,
02:00like I said, I'll just block it out.
02:02So, I mean, at some
02:04point as this lingers
02:06and you don't share
02:08with fans, and I don't know if he shared
02:10it internally or not, what the
02:12plan is, does that
02:14become an issue for Gerard Mayo?
02:16I mean,
02:18you've got to learn to block.
02:20I mean, Gerard knows that he has to
02:22block out the media.
02:24He has to block us all out because we're all going to
02:26have opinions, and that's what our job
02:28is. Fans want to know.
02:30But do you see
02:32what's going on with his offensive line?
02:34Do you see what Jacoby Brissett is going
02:36through? Do you really want to
02:38put your future
02:40on the line? And that's a hard decision
02:42you have to make, even though we want to see him play.
02:44We want to see if he can change things,
02:46but I don't care who you are. If you don't
02:48have that protection, you don't
02:50put your future, your third
02:52pick overall
02:54out there to get beat up.
02:56He can get hurt.
02:58I mean, that's a fine
03:00line. He's just going to sit all year
03:02then, Drake May?
03:04No, I'm not saying
03:06sit him all year. Eventually, we've got
03:08to see if he can play, but it's still
03:10early in the season, and I think I've
03:12said it, you know, at the beginning
03:14of the season, you've got to give him
03:16five, six, seven games
03:18to see what's going on, but they're going to be
03:20out of, if they don't pick it up,
03:22they're going to be out of contention real soon,
03:24so you've got to throw him in there and let him see
03:26if he can play and try
03:28to build around him, but right now,
03:30he will get plumb. Would you see what's
03:32happening? So people are going to have
03:34to hold on, and he's trying to protect
03:36the future because
03:38Patriots ain't going nowhere right now from the way
03:40they're playing. They ain't going nowhere.
03:42I mean, it's not just
03:44a quarterback position, so what
03:46are you going to do? It's about the future.
03:48Your future returns, and
03:50if you put him out there right now, you risk
03:52injuries or risk messing him
03:54up to where he's not
03:56going to bid for another Matt Jones
03:58situation. Ty, I just
04:00can't get over the fact that they allowed
04:02this team to come into this season
04:04with this offensive line. Like, I
04:06don't know how you rebuild if you don't have a line
04:08to build behind.
04:10I
04:12totally agree. I didn't
04:14know that they were that bad
04:16on the offensive line.
04:18I mean, I think they were
04:20talking about in the beginning that they were going to
04:22have the money out
04:24there ready to pay people.
04:26You're going to have to pay to play. Nowadays,
04:28free agents, that's what they're looking
04:30for. I mean, so you've got to
04:32miss the craft.
04:34They've got to open up the branch truck and bring some
04:36dogs up in there to protect
04:38you guys. You win football games
04:40in the trenches and
04:42how they're playing right now, guys,
04:44across the board. It ain't just the quarterback.
04:46It's not just the offensive line. Have you seen
04:48that many guys
04:50get behind the secondary?
04:52How many deep balls are you going to give up?
04:54Oh, my God. I mean,
04:56that's what I'm pissed
04:58about. I mean, I've never been on the defense.
05:00Like, everyone gives up one
05:02every now and again, but you do not give
05:04up, give it up like that
05:06consistently and let
05:08guys get behind your defense. That is
05:10absolutely crazy. You will never win like that.
05:12Is that on the players
05:14or you put that
05:16on? Hell, yeah. No, you can't
05:18put that on coaches. I always say you give
05:20the coaches hard times, but
05:22the coaches are not out there on the field.
05:24At some point, have some
05:26damn pride. Play ball.
05:28Compete. And when you're not competing,
05:30I thought that we had some because remember
05:32that one play, that was the only
05:34highlight that I've seen that's worth
05:36talking about. So when we go on to
05:38the last part of the show, the key player
05:40of the Apex, damn it, when he hit
05:42Brandon Ayuk, that was
05:44that one, man. I said, oh, that was early in the game.
05:46Oh, they're ready to play now because that's supposed
05:48to energize your defense. That's supposed to
05:50get everybody going. He knocked the hell
05:52out of, uh, no, it's Debo
05:54Samuel. He knocked the hell out of Debo Samuel when he
05:56came up there running that ball. So that's supposed
05:58to get everybody fired up. But what do they do?
06:00Go back to the same thing,
06:02missing tackles, letting guys get behind
06:04the defense. And it was just
06:06a poor performance, you know, across the
06:08board. And they're not protecting the quarterback.
06:10So, I mean, this is going
06:12to be a long season. And Gerard Mayo,
06:14he's going to have to make some tough calls.
06:16And eventually, you're going to have to play
06:18May to see what he can do.
06:20Ty, you do have to put some of it on the coaching though.
06:22Greg made a great point yesterday about
06:24Ramondre Stevenson, four fumbles in four
06:26games. And he brought up the
06:28fact that if Bill was still the coach, you wouldn't see
06:30him out there.
06:32And I,
06:34as reluctant as I am,
06:36got to agree with Greg.
06:38You know, because I would love to sit there and
06:40combat that. But you are 100%
06:42right. And that kind of
06:44stuff right there will get you fired.
06:46You know, he has so much talent. And
06:48Ramondre Stevenson, he's a great ball
06:50kicker. But if you're turning the ball over,
06:52there's no place for you in the
06:54rotation. Your team loses confidence.
06:56Your coach loses confidence. It's like
06:58a receiver dropping balls.
07:00You know, you lose confidence.
07:02He's not going to throw you the ball anymore.
07:04Believe me, four in a row,
07:06you will be sitting next game.
07:08If it was Bill Belichick, you would not
07:10get an opportunity to play because
07:12he's going to send a message to you
07:14and the rest of the team.
07:16It's going to be interesting what Gerard does
07:18because he's coming from Coach Belichick
07:20and he knows that you can't
07:22turn the ball over. Four weeks
07:24in a row? Damn it.
07:26He's going to have his hat on on the sideline.
07:28Ty, you brought up Gerard Mayo.
07:30And I ain't talking about helmet.
07:34You mentioned Gerard Mayo.
07:36He's got some interesting work
07:38ahead of him. Yesterday, Devon
07:40Gotchow was on the Midday Show and he
07:42publicly was calling out his
07:44defensive players for what they were doing
07:46on the field.
07:48Oh, well, I mean, we just
07:50all got to be on the same page, man.
07:52We got guys, you know,
07:54some guys just kind of being kind of selfish.
07:56You know, I get it.
07:58We're down. Guys want to make plays.
08:00I get it. But, you know, everybody got to play.
08:02I'm talking about defense. Everybody has to play at 11.
08:04There we go. Calling out players
08:06for being selfish and not doing their job
08:08on defense.
08:10You know what? That's a problem.
08:12That is a problem to come out and say
08:14that, you know, publicly,
08:16but you got to hold guys
08:18accountable. You know what I mean? We try to
08:20keep everything, you know, at least
08:22in my experience, keep it in-house, but
08:26that makes, oh, man.
08:28I'm not, never had a loss for words, but when I
08:30see defense play like that, then now you
08:32have, you know, players and coaches
08:34talking, you know, in the public with
08:36what's going on.
08:38That is an issue. And maybe he's trying to
08:40light a fire up under them, but
08:42they got to do a
08:44rehaul. You don't do that publicly.
08:46Or certainly, that didn't happen here.
08:48I mean, that was
08:50for decades, that was all kept in-house.
08:52Exactly.
08:54Exactly. I mean, as it
08:56should be, but, you know, times
08:58will change. It's hard to keep things in-house
09:00nowadays anyway, but when you go out there
09:02intentionally to
09:04put something out there to send a message,
09:06you know, you're actually sending the wrong
09:08message, even though, you know, maybe
09:10some good intentions behind it, but that
09:12is something that you can't
09:14do when that divides the team. So
09:16I hope
09:18Coach Mayo, I know he's
09:20going to have a lot to say to those guys,
09:22when they get in there,
09:24to those meetings, to try to
09:26do some type of rebound, but
09:28it's looking bad across the board,
09:30and it's crumbling. You see
09:32it crumbling right now. You see
09:34the body language. There's no
09:36swagger out there. Where's the damn
09:38Patriots swagger? Even when we lost games,
09:40we still had some swagger. I don't see
09:42that, you know, right now.
09:44And I'm just going to tell
09:46the truth. It's going to be a lot of
09:48criticism. It's going to be a lot of
09:50we're going to be having the same
09:52conversation, you know,
09:54for the rest of the season. They need to go ahead
09:56and get some free agents,
09:58try to on the trade deadline.
10:00I mean, they need
10:02some more players and they need some help.
10:04Ty Law always had swagger.
10:06Even I would imagine when running to the
10:08men's room this morning, you still have that swagger.
10:10Hey, you know,
10:12I still got that
10:14pimp walk even though I'm rushing
10:16to get over there.
10:18Hey, but I tell you what, I mean,
10:20that is a part, like, we can talk about
10:22a team.
10:24When we lost, we still
10:26had an aura about us that we were going to go out there
10:28and compete again. You're not going to win every
10:30play. You're not going to win every game.
10:32It's the way you go about it. How are you
10:34going to handle the adversity?
10:36All those things, you know, play into
10:38account of a winning team.
10:40It's not a sprint.
10:42It's a marathon. I remember,
10:44you know, when we lost, what,
10:46three or four games and went to the Super Bowl.
10:48But we were a different
10:50team than what we're looking at right now.
10:52I can't say that they were the same type
10:54of team or they going to be able to rebound
10:56and do the same thing that we did.
10:58That's not going to happen with those guys. They need
11:00more players, more cohesion,
11:02more trust with
11:04one another. They need
11:06more talent. Let's put it like that. You
11:08in the NFL, that does not mean that
11:10you're talented enough to be a great team
11:12just because you got on the NFL uniform.
11:14But they now have Miami
11:16coming off a short week. They're banged up.
11:18Coming off a loss. Is this a good time
11:20maybe that we see a win
11:22and if things are going poorly that
11:24they could throw Drake May in because it could
11:26be the safest option you have for a few weeks?
11:28Absolutely.
11:30This is a great opportunity because
11:32you have an injured
11:34dolphin that they ain't swimming very
11:36well. You know, dolphins usually swim pretty fast,
11:38pretty smart. But they're injured.
11:40So take advantage of it. You know what I mean?
11:42In a fight,
11:46you kick a man when he's down.
11:48I mean, that's what you do in a fight.
11:50This is going to be a fight. So when they're down,
11:52unfortunately,
11:54you got to kick them.
11:58When it comes to the
12:00dolphins and we talk about the
12:02so-called rivalries,
12:04AFCs, this is a prime opportunity
12:06to take advantage and learn something
12:08because they're a team
12:10that you have to see again
12:12naturally because you play two games.
12:14You have to play them, but send a
12:16message right now.
12:18They're wounded. They are not
12:20playing good ball either. So if you lose to
12:22an injured, you know,
12:24wounded dolphins team right now,
12:26what is that saying about your team?
12:28If anybody can beat the dolphins
12:30right now. I think you addressed it.
12:32The most entertaining play of the game
12:34brought to you by Apex Entertainment.
12:36Experience the thrills at Apex
12:38Entertainment in Marlborough.
12:40And you're going with what?
12:42I'm going with
12:44whoever the hell, because I, whoever
12:46hit Devo Samuel
12:48and it sounded off. He ran up
12:50there like he was trying to
12:52hurt somebody. I thought that was
12:54the most entertaining play.
12:56It happened so fast. All I heard and I
12:58seen, I was like, oh my goodness. That's how
13:00you play defense. And that should have rallied
13:02the troops, but unfortunately, it didn't.
13:04So that was the most entertaining
13:06play for me.
13:08You know?
13:10Jabril Peppers.
13:12Yeah, I believe that was the Patriots resident hammer
13:14Jabril Peppers.
13:16Exactly. So I mean,
13:18that was a play, but you think
13:20that would have lit the fire up
13:22under everybody when you have a
13:24guy go out there and make that type of
13:26contact
13:28on somebody like Devo Samuel.
13:30What happened? Where
13:32was the energy at? He even had a great
13:34play in the end zone. So some of those
13:36guys are out there. They're out there giving an
13:38effort and Peppers is one
13:40of them. You know what I mean? Even he stopped the touchdown
13:42for his hustle on the running
13:44back towards the end of the game. He kept playing. So
13:46I like what he's bringing to the table.
13:48He can play some plays better, of
13:50course, like we all can when we're out there.
13:52I think Christian Gonzalez,
13:54he has a high
13:56ceiling. He has a very high ceiling, but
13:58he has to be more consistent in his play.
14:00But everybody else,
14:02oh, it's going to be an interesting
14:04offseason. It's going to show
14:06me some people that going somewhere
14:08else or not being in the league. If you keep
14:10playing like that, it's not for long.
14:12That's what the NFL stand for. It's a long,
14:14painful period of time
14:16until we get there, unfortunately. All right,
14:18Ty Law, thank you.
14:20All right. Thanks, guys. All right. There's Ty
14:22Law every Tuesday on
14:24this show.
14:26What is this argument here on the text
14:28line? You guys are hilarious.
14:30This station in particular
14:32demanded for Bill to be fired.
14:34I did not.
14:36I did not. And now
14:38complains about the soft coaching.
14:40I was not
14:42asking for Bill to be fired. There may
14:44have been some that were. I was not.
14:46He should have been fired. He was fired.
14:48And it's okay to also criticize his
14:50successor. Both are not the same
14:52thing. And you certainly
14:54did not call for him to be fired.
14:56This has been a fun
14:58thing on social media where people are
15:00like, you ran Bill out of town.
15:02Well, when the Patriots
15:04won, Bill was taking credit for all the players
15:06that were still here. And now
15:08that they're losing, he's saying how bad the roster
15:10is. The roster sucked.
15:12And that has to do with Robert Kraft
15:14not spending, okay, first.
15:16But, you know, the recent
15:18draft sucked, which is why Bill's not here.
15:20Also, like, we ran Bill out of town. We
15:22didn't pick the successor. Like, I'm pretty
15:24sure Curtis, especially wanted, like, Mike
15:26who would have brought a hard-ass
15:28approach to this and not a Gerard Mayo approach.
15:30So, like, of course we can criticize
15:32Gerard Mayo just because he's not Bill Belichick.
15:34No, I think it's fair
15:36to criticize Bill. Curtis criticizes
15:38him, and rightly so,
15:40about the roster. I think it's fair to
15:42criticize Gerard Mayo, or at
15:44least to ask the question,
15:46would there be players
15:48that are currently on this defense
15:50calling out
15:52other guys for freelancing
15:54during a radio interview
15:56if Bill were the head coach? And I'm guessing
15:58that there probably would not be.
16:00Didn't somebody call out Jamie Collins
16:02for freelancing? Was that the media, or was that a
16:04player or a coach? I forget. I just know
16:06he was freelancing.
16:08I don't remember that.
16:10I just, I don't
16:12know. I just
16:14think it's, you give
16:16license to everybody to say what they want,
16:18feel the vibe is great,
16:20say what you want, you know.
16:22If you're a guy who's disgruntled
16:24and you want to go on your
16:26social media and complain about
16:28it, then go ahead and do it.
16:30There's no repercussion whatsoever.
16:32Then you get this
16:34kind of thing. That's the expectation
16:36is that guys can say whatever they want.
16:38And you can decide whether that's a good or a bad thing.
16:40And two things, Greg. One, I don't think
16:42Gerard Mayo will be the coach he is today,
16:44next year and the year after. I think this
16:46is a learning curve for him. And
16:48secondly, the way
16:50in which
16:52the organization
16:54conducts itself, we said
16:56the second they had the presser and everybody loved
16:58Gerard Mayo, he can be nice
17:00but the only thing that matters is if he wins.
17:02Bill wasn't happy most of the
17:04time and he stayed here for a generation.
17:06It's all about, I mean, if this works
17:08he'll be here for a while. If players
17:10take advantage of him, he'll be gone.
17:12Yeah, I think it's
17:14I hope you're right
17:16but I think it also is
17:18hard to fire a guy
17:20that you have publicly
17:22said you anointed
17:24as your next head coach five years
17:26ago. And it's
17:28difficult to do that
17:30if you feel like you need to get rid of him.
17:32So I think he's here for a while.
17:34Much longer leash once you say that.
