00:00One month before Christmas, toys for gifts are already available.
00:04That's why a group is trying to encourage people to buy toys
00:08that contain dangerous chemicals.
00:13BN Manalo has more.
00:18Along with the celebration of National Children's Month this November
00:22and the upcoming Christmas,
00:24children's products like toys have been sold again.
00:29That's why Mary Jane is very careful in buying toys for her children.
00:35She's making sure that her toys are safe from the dangerous chemicals in the toys.
00:42I read what's written on the toys to see if the child is safe or not.
00:47Of course, it's not allowed.
00:49Like others, there are dangerous chemicals.
00:52If you try it, of course, the children will get sick.
00:55That's why BAN Toxic Philippines is making an effort
01:00to ensure the safety of children from the dangerous chemicals.
01:05In fact, the group conducted a new study
01:08with the Environment and Social Development Organization or ESDO
01:12in Bangladesh and the Philippines.
01:15Its goal is to reduce the public's awareness
01:18of the dangers of various dangerous chemicals in toys
01:22and to encourage the government to take action
01:26especially on the strict implementation of the policies related to this.
01:30That's why our group, BAN Toxics and ESDO,
01:34is pushing to remove these chemicals
01:38because they are not needed in these products,
01:41especially in children's products.
01:44The group is also encouraging to put labels on the products
01:48in accordance with Republic Act 10620
01:51or the Toy and Game Safety Labeling Act of 2013.
01:55They are afraid of the harmful effects of chemicals on health.
01:59For example, when we talk about lead and mercury,
02:03it's a neurotoxin.
02:05So, it attacks the brain first.
02:07Polyvinyl chloride,
02:09the kind of plastic squeaky toys,
02:12the effect of other chemicals will be the result of this.
02:17This is an endocrine-disrupting chemical.
02:20It may cause hormonal imbalance.
02:23Among the information that should be included in the label
02:27is the name, location, contact number of the manufacturers,
02:31ingredients, cautionary information,
02:34and there should be a license to operate number from the regulatory agency.
02:39That's why they are advising the buyers.
02:42Our countrymen should not look at the price.
02:46They should look at whether the age of the product is appropriate for them.
