00:00Hi, I'm health reporter Sarah McCann and today we're going to be delving into a new social media
00:05trend that's really taken off amongst couples called the sleep divorce. Despite its serious
00:12name, sleep divorce is when couples or romantic partners opt to sleep in separate rooms.
00:19According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, over one third of people regularly
00:25sleep separately from their partner. Those who take part in the practice of sleep divorce
00:31cite many benefits including better sleep quality, less interruptions in their sleep,
00:36and an improved relationship with their partner. However, there can be negatives from the
00:42additional cost of two separate bedrooms to reduce intimacy and some people find that actually sleep
00:49divorce worsens their sleep quality with one in four couples who start off doing the practice
00:55eventually returning to sharing a bed together.
