00:00Okay, post-Turkey day, Bob Ryan, Gary Tanguy, just rolling in here, folks, brought to you
00:24by Price Picks, the exclusive daily fantasy partner of CLNS Media Network.
00:29Pick more, pick less with Price Picks.
00:32Okay, Bob, the last time we talked about the Celtics, not a lot going on since, however,
00:36you have noticed that the league has been put on notice with, to be redundant, with
00:41the appearance of Mr. Porzingis.
00:44Absolutely.
00:45They went off to a 14-3 start without him, or at least, and the world has kind of semi-forgotten
00:54about him, and now that he's back, that first game, he got everybody's attention, and not
01:00the average fan is going to see the three-point shot and all that, but the league in general
01:04is reminded about what he means to the Celtics' defense, and their numbers, they've been getting
01:10attacked in the paint.
01:11Right.
01:12I mean, in the midst of it, there were games when they lost and games where they were very
01:16lucky to survive after being shredded in the paint, and that nonsense stopped right away
01:22with Minnesota, even with a potent force such as Colbert around.
01:27He's important to the defense as well as the offense.
01:30He's such, I mean, in general, he's so much a better all-around player than I ever thought
01:36when they got him.
01:37I have to keep going back to the fact that when they got him, I went, well, all right,
01:41we'll see.
01:43I'm not big on seven-three guys shooting jump shots all night long, and he's so much more
01:48than that, but the thing was, he was just off the radar screen in Washington, particularly.
01:53Nobody watched the Wizards two years ago, so I had no idea what was going on.
01:57Anyway, he's back.
01:58We don't know how long he'll be back.
02:00We hope he's going to be around at the right time of the year.
02:03It's probably never going to change.
02:05He's always going to be injury, I don't know if the word should be prone, but injury, what?
02:12I don't know.
02:12Find the right word.
02:13Maybe it is injury prone.
02:14I mean, I know what you're saying, injury prone, because you don't want that to be an
02:17insult, but his physical makeup makes him very susceptible.
02:22Yeah, I mean, he had multiple injuries last year, and the injury that KO'd him after he
02:29got brought back had nothing to do with the one that kept him out for 37 days.
02:33So that's the thing.
02:34People have to be cognizant.
02:35So I guess what we say is, as I like to point out in a lot of cases, enjoy it while you
02:39get it, boys.
02:40Enjoy the ride, and this is why I value the regular season in terms of the entertainment
02:46value, and he gave them a show the other night, and hopefully he's going to be able to give
02:51them several more shows this year.
02:53But he's back now.
02:55They got a gimme game.
02:57They better win on Friday night, and then they got appointment to television, too, for
03:02the early season.
03:03They go to Cleveland, and in the midst of an NFL season, that's not going to get a lot
03:08of national attention, but in the world of the NBA, it's going to get a lot of attention.
03:13So they go to Cleveland on Sunday, and that's going to be fun, no question.
03:17Bob, with Porzingis, the fact that he came into a team already with superstars, already
03:23with a structure, it probably enabled him to play freer.
03:27Now, like you said, in Washington, his numbers were better than people think.
03:30When he was with the Knicks, and then, I got to be honest with you, I don't know what the
03:35hell happened in Dallas, but when he was with the Knicks, he was the guy, right?
03:40Haven't you seen players in the past that just don't do well in that role, but you bring
03:45them on another team where they don't have to be the guy, and they flourish?
03:48Yeah, many examples of that, and many examples of guys who were born to be number three,
03:53or born to be number two, and he's definitely, he's a two, a very valuable two, if you will.
04:00By the way, I loved, just as an aside, when we honored Dee Brown at the Tradition in Boston
04:06a week ago Wednesday, and what he told me in his story that I did on him, was he says,
04:12I was never a number one, I was a pretty good number two, and basically, I'm a damn good number
04:17three. You know what? He's right, and that kind of self-awareness is all too rare in all sports,
04:25right? We're always on the lookout for guys who really know who they are, and what their place
04:33is, and what their role is, and what their job is, and do not bring an over-inflated ego to the
04:39situation, and that was a classic example. Anyway, yeah, Porzingis is a wonderful,
04:46high-level adjunct player, and it gives him a very important force in the middle,
04:53in a league where there are some acknowledged superstars at that position, we know that,
04:57but he gives them all they need, he gives them exactly what they need.
05:01Does he give them a psychological advantage, because as you said, we were talking earlier,
05:06you said, well, Porzingis in that one game put the league on notice.
05:09Yeah, we might have been fans, yeah, I can't remember just how, the difference,
05:14yeah, absolutely, and it makes you think, my God, they were 14-3 without him, and you know,
05:20some of them were shaky, we agree to that, they were shaky, and fine, you know, nobody's winning
05:2582 games, you know, convincingly, but it's just, the good times should be back, and you know,
05:33keep your fingers crossed on the injury thing, but we welcome the guy back, it's great.
05:39You know, I just think that if you're going into the play with Celtics, and then,
05:42especially in the opening round of the playoffs, or in a playoff situation,
05:45then you look down, you say, oh, Porzingis is playing tonight, you're like, oh, geez,
05:49we had a shot, until, you know. You know, our chances have been severely diminished, yes.
05:54Diminished, and that enters into, even though they're professional athletes,
05:57that enters into their heads. Okay, the Milwaukee Bucks, at 9-9 now.
06:03They started at 1-6 and 2-8, and we're saying, oh, and I think I declared them done,
06:09I think I said the window's shut. They've won their last five, as we speak. However,
06:15however, four at home, first four were at home. Two of them were notable to, you know,
06:23where you better win. They won, they beat Houston, who have entered into the category,
06:29you've got to respect. They beat the Bulls, they're not here, the Bulls are, you know,
06:33also in. They beat Indiana, and they're not playing the way they should, but, and then
06:41they beat Charlotte, and everybody beats Charlotte. So, and then they went to Miami and won
06:46by three points, and lured, and this is where, I'm not, you know, I'm not paying microscopic
06:52attention to them, but I got a figure that Lowery's playing better, or else this wouldn't
06:57be happening. It took him an awful long time to acclimate himself, you know, to Milwaukee and
07:03that team. The other guy that I love talking about, because to me it's one of the most
07:08fascinating stories, and so emblematic of the way the league has changed over the years,
07:14Brooke Lopez, who's now 36, and he's playing well right now, at both ends of the floor,
07:20and until two years ago, I never even thought of, did you ever think of him as a major defensive
07:24deterrent? Well, I didn't either, but he is, and it's an important part of their game,
07:33and the other thing is his reinvention. He's the greatest example of a big man recognizing how the
07:39world has changed, because it just, I urge everybody, just go back and look up what his
07:45career trend was on threes, and how the first X years of his career, four, five, six years,
07:51you know, he barely took double figures combined, and now he's a major three-point threat. He's
07:56made himself, that's a tribute to a guy that, he must have spent a lot of hours in the gym, Gary,
08:01to do that, and he did. He had a devastating leg injury too. Yeah, right, right. I think he probably
08:08felt like he had to reinvent himself. Well, he sure did, and it's given him, you know, so anyway,
08:13I'm a doc phobe, you know that, I mean phile, excuse me, not phobe. Oh yeah, yeah, no, I got
08:17you. Doc phile. I'm happy for Doc. His reputation has taken a real beating, you know, in the last
08:22couple of years, let's face it, ever since he left here, you know, the playoff failures with
08:27the Clippers, and of course the 76ers, and now, and last year with Milwaukee, he had no positive
08:34effect on them whatsoever that we could see, so I'm hoping that, you know, that I want Doc to do
08:40well, not well enough to beat the Celtics, but I want him to do well. So by the way, Yanis, he's
08:47long since reached a point where he's taken for granted. He's totally, we just take this nightly
08:51incredible athleticism and stuff, he's averaging 32 points a game as I speak, okay. He's leading
08:57the league, he's a previous MVP, he's nowhere, he's still got, he's as good as he's ever been,
09:04and he's just, we appreciate the guy. The guy's an all-time great, and he's, so as long as they
09:10got him every night, they go out on the floor, they got a chance to win, but they're back, and
09:14they're back in, you know, 500 and on their way, you know, they'll be in a 4-5-6 category,
09:20I think, in the, you know, playoff thing, so. All right, coming up next, Bob's going to break down
09:24the Eastern West, and he has some, there are some discrepancies he's going to bring to the floor,

11:10PrizePix, run your game. Okay, Bob, we get back to it now here. And East-West,
11:17you've done some research, my friend. Just when I started to think last year, the gap
11:24was sufficiently closing between the East and the West. Things have rarely been worse this year.
11:30How many Eastern teams do you think are over 500 as we speak?
11:36Three. Four.
11:39How many West teams do you think are over 500 as we speak?
11:43Five, six.
11:45Ten.
11:46Ten are over 500?
11:48Golden State, Lakers, Clippers, Suns, Rockets, Grizzlies, Mavericks, Spurs, Thunder,
11:55Nuggets. Ten.
11:57Wow.
11:59Yeah, you said there's a discrepancy. I should have gone for a bigger number. You said there
12:02was a discrepancy.
12:03The conference, no Eastern conference is, a division, excuse me, is over 500. The Atlantic
12:12is 42 and 49 as we speak. Southeast is 37 and 53. And the Central, including a 17 and 2 team,
12:22is 34 and 43.
12:25The East is top-heavy.
12:27It's 51 and 45, including. Without, you subtract Cleveland, it's 34 and 43. But the Central is
12:34over 500, thanks to Cleveland, only thanks to Cleveland. Okay. Now in the West, the Pacific
12:41is 54 and 39, including, they're very analogous to the NFC West, because Golden State's 12 and
12:476, LA Lakers are 11 and 7, Clippers are 12 and 8, and Phoenix is 10 and 8. And as you well know,
12:53the NFC West is completely on a five-way tie on this, dammit. Okay. The Southwest conference is
12:5951 and 45, and the Northwest is under at 43 and 47. But the discrepancy, 10 over 500 in the West,
13:074 over 500 in the East, and you want to know why, the answer is, I don't know.
13:16What is, I mean, we can look at who the teams are and how they, but how they got this way.
13:21Is there some kind of geographic pattern? I don't see how there could be. Just better,
13:26just luck of the draw. Well, I think I look at the East as being top-heavy,
13:31that the favorite, that you have the Celtics, and we'll wait and see what happens with Cleveland.
13:37But right now, it's the Celtics and Cleveland, and pretty much anybody else. But our West is
13:43just, I don't know, more parity. We'd have to look at the state. You wonder how this evolved.
13:47This has been going on for quite a while, the West, you know, over quite a while.
13:51Well, I thought the East was going to put a dent in it a few years back. But the problem is,
13:58Philadelphia has never lived up to the billing, and the Knicks aren't living up to the billing.
14:03So I thought, when Philadelphia, when, you know, Philadelphia started playing well,
14:08then the Knicks got Timbs and got some players, I thought there was going to be sort of a changing
14:11of the guard, if you will, because I thought Phoenix was getting older. I thought Golden
14:15State was done. Obviously, I was wrong. But Golden State was done.
14:19No, Golden State, I got to give them credit. They put some faith in some younger players,
14:26and they're being rewarded to a degree with that faith. They've sufficiently managed to
14:31replace Klay Thompson, basically, with Buddy Heald. He's doing a good job, about as well as
14:36Klay Thompson is doing in Mavericks, if even better. And Curry hasn't appeared to lose a
14:42damn thing. He hasn't lost anything at his age. And Curr is obviously a superior coach.
14:48But I never would have thought that they'd be the top of the division. Then again, you say,
14:52well, who? However, well, in a conference, you know, you always figure, you know, Denver's
14:57underachieving. Oklahoma City is pretty much living up to it. Minnesota's underachieving,
15:04right, we think. Right.
15:05And now, at this latest, Anthony Edwards is calling them out. Oh, boy, good luck to that
15:09out there. I'm telling you, that is a, that's going to explode.
15:12He's calling them out? Oh, boy.
15:14That's going to explode.
15:15Anyway, the West dominance is as much as it's ever been.
15:19But do you think, I understand what you're saying, Bob, as far as the numbers go,
15:22but don't you feel the championship's coming out of the East?
15:25Well, right now, yeah, having said that, obviously, the two teams, right now,
15:30playoffs start tonight, they'd be the favorites, two of them.
15:34Okay, let's have some fun with this. So, when Milwaukee's making a comeback, and arguably,
15:40no disrespect to Tatum and Brown, but, I mean, the Freak is arguably the best player in the league,
15:45correct? He or Djokic?
15:48Okay, fine. Okay, and then, okay, so, out of the East, if Milwaukee,
15:53Milwaukee gets their act together with that guy, and, you know, if Lillard finds his way in the
15:59playoffs, I mean, Milwaukee is a threat to win it. I don't, you love the Knicks, I don't know
16:04if the Knicks can win it. I really, I don't know.
16:08You know, their offense, you know, they just had this incredible run.
16:11They went 131-30 and 145, you know, in a stretch, but their defense is not
16:18Tibbs' kind of defense yet, and they're very thin. They're very dependent on,
16:23and because Miles McBride, who scorched the Celtics on opening night, Miles McBride is
16:28hurt right now. Their bench is really thin. It's all about those five guys, and, you know,
16:33people, Tibbs has been criticized in the past for overworking his starters,
16:37and he's very defensive about it, but right now he's playing them heavy minutes again.
16:43I think it's time for them to, their offense is good. I mean, it's really good, and they'll put
16:49some serious numbers up, but they're not playing the kind of two-way basketball that you think
16:53they would be playing, but right now, they're 10-8, and that was after a real bad start,
16:59so I think they'll get better.
17:01But your real contenders, I mean, if you thought, like, I don't know if the Knicks
17:05could win a title. I thought Philadelphia might have had a shot, but they're a mess.
17:08I mean, that's just not working.
17:09Three and 14. Ladies and gentlemen, they're one game ahead of the Wizards.
17:15I mean, that's just a mental thing. They're going to have to blow it up. There's obviously
17:19not a lot of happy players there, so, I mean, you have the Celtics, you have the Bucs,
17:24then I guess you have Golden State and probably Denver. Would you throw Dallas in there?
17:28So, you know, there's a lot of, like you mentioned, there's a lot of parody,
17:33but how many real contenders are there?
17:36I really think, no. I mean, Oklahoma City, clearly, yes. They're 14-4. I think they're
17:43legit. Denver is not playing the way they can or should or maybe will. No matter how
17:50well Golden State is playing, they're not winning the championship. That Lakers team
17:53is a little bit better than I thought they'd be because they have some good players that
17:57have helped them.
17:57You don't think Golden State can win another one?
17:59With this group? Boy, I'd be, I can't. I just can't see them. I can't. I give them credit
18:06for doing what they're doing, but I just, and by the way, they're starting to stumble.
18:12And I think it's going to come down, Oklahoma City versus the field in the West, frankly.
18:17Okay. Well, there you go.
18:19All right. Now, we've got to turn our attention to the world of semi-pro basketball.
18:26Namely, the American colleges, where a very disturbing and different levels thing happened
18:34in Maui, where the coach of the two-time defending national champion UConn Huskies,
18:40truly, if ever a coach lost the game, and you can put the blame on him, and it was Danny
18:47Hurley with the score tied and 40 seconds to go, coming off two straight losses to unranked teams,
18:54picks up a whiny technical, yeah, it was a bad call. I saw it. It wasn't the worst call
19:00in the history of American civilization. It was a marginal call. It was a bad call.
19:05He went nuts and got himself thrown out of the game with the accompanying technicals and with
19:11the four free throws that were awarded to the opponent, they made them all, and UConn won't
19:18loss. How can he look his team in the eye? He's very defensive. I want to know what I want to
19:24know. I mean, all right. It's been highly observed that he's very volatile and fiery, all these
19:33wonderful adjectives, and it's part of his charm because he's a fiery, intense guy and blah, blah,
19:38blah. When you win two championships in a row, you get indulged in any sport, right? You get
19:44indulged, but is the AD going to censure him in any way? Is the school president going to say,
19:53hey, this is not the kind of way we represent it to the world?
19:57I mean, look, that guy, no one's going to say anything to that guy. That's the way it goes.
20:03That's, yeah. No, I agree, especially with the fact, act like you've been there before,
20:08especially when you've won like two titles, and you just got a big contract. I mean,
20:14you can relax a little bit, and maybe you just- Oh, God, he's set for life and many lives,
20:21but anyway, there comes a point where being fiery and colorful and-
20:29Gets old.
20:30Draw the line.
20:31Well, it gets old, especially, I mean, it's okay if you win. Look, he's set. His job is not in
20:37jeopardy, believe me.
20:39But you can get away with that stuff when you're winning. That's the great thing, but-
20:45But when you directly had a primary reason why your team loses the game, and because of your
20:52sideline actions, that's rare. I cannot cite another example that comes to my mind of that
21:03nature.
21:04He really went after the refs in the press conference.
21:07Yeah.
21:08I mean, he really went after them. He took no accountability.
21:12No, everybody should be respecting and defending me, because I was just standing up for my team's
21:17rights and all that nonsense. Oh, no, no, you can't do that. Well, but he did do it, and you're
21:22right. He probably would be left free to do whatever he wants. You know they're going to
21:26bounce back, although Alex Caravan, arguably their best player, may have suffered a concussion. We're
21:32going to find out about him. Now, he was cleared to fly home, which is a start, but he banged his
21:38head on the floor. That's an NBA prospect there, Alex Caravan. But they got plenty of time to
21:45right the ship, and then, of course, once you get in the tournament, eventually-
21:48Yeah, who knows what happens?
21:49Anything can happen. We've seen 10 teams, 10 lost teams, win the tournament. So hello,
21:54Villanova, 85. And hello, North Carolina State, 83. So it can happen.
22:00But anyway, I just think it's not a good thing.

23:52Okay, Bob. Lamella Ball, you wanted to sing his praises a bit. He's putting up some individual
23:56stats, but they're not resulting in team wins. No, no. He's as hot a scoring guy as there is
24:02in the league right now. He's coming off a 42-point game or 44, taking a lot of shots.
24:07He's turning the clock back to the NBA I grew up with. Now, I'm serious. I'm talking about
24:1250s and 60s as well as the 70s when I actually covered and began covering when, you know, guys,
24:19nobody shot 50%, Gary, you know? Right.
24:22Maybe Wilt because of all the dunks and stuff. But you didn't shoot. To score, you got to get
24:29some shots up. It wasn't uncommon for somebody to take 40 shots. By the way, tonight Wilt had 100.
24:35I'm laughing about this now. Wilt took 63 shots and made 36. He also was 28 for 32 from the line,
24:44which means he was fouled one way or the other 16 more times.
24:49Wouldn't you love to see that game and see how you get a lot of it done in 48 minutes?
24:54Anyway.
24:55You want the evidence.
24:57Lamella, I think he took 40 shots the other day. He took a lot of shots. I haven't seen that in a
25:01while. He's talented. He's an offensive machine, okay? Daddy Lamar was right. Lonzo, the problem
25:10is that they both get hurt. Lonzo's hurt now again. They really were, I don't know, as good
25:17as Lamar said they were, but he was right. They were definitely NBA players of stature,
25:22both of them, Lamella and Lonzo.
25:25I didn't think they'd be around this long. Like the way the father talked and how obnoxious he
25:29was, I was just like, these kids, there's no way they could be this good. They're still around.
25:34Oh, they are. So now the thing is with Lamella, he's putting up the points. I forget the numbers,
25:39but the numbers are there. The more points he scores, the more they lose. The less points he
25:45scores, the better chance they have of winning. Now, I think that's not uncommon. That's certainly
25:51something, a phenomenon that's happened many times with many schools over the years.
25:59They may have to reconsider how they're doing things in that franchise.
26:03I just want to say in terms of the skill, the raw skill level, the young man is an
26:09excellent player. He's a scary guy going up and down the court. He goes to the basket really well.
26:15You didn't want Lamar to be right. Not that you wanted bad things for the kids,
26:19but you couldn't have both, I guess. But Lamar, you were right. The kids can play, okay?
26:24All right. There you go.
26:25And the daddy has been fairly quiet.
26:27We haven't heard from him in years. That's good.
26:29That is a good thing. I think maybe the kid said, listen, Pops, enough.
26:34Enough. We love you, but enough.
26:38Exactly.
26:38All right, Bob. Did you have a good Thanksgiving?
26:41We had a very nice family-oriented. We got my three grandchildren all together here,
26:46the triplets, with my grandson's girlfriend and a college friend of his.
26:55From St. Michael's, good old St. Michael's of Winterski, Vermont. Yeah, St. Mike's.
27:01St. Mike's is the best.
27:05But the real treat is ahead of us because nothing's better than the follow-up leftover dinner.
27:12It's even better. Somehow, it's always better.
27:15It is.
27:16I can't wait to get back at that stuffing. I'll tell you that right now.
27:21Bob, great minds think alike. Enjoy it, my friend.
