00:00Celtics beat is brought to you by price picks and the game time app
00:06Hey everybody, happy almost weekend to you
00:10Or maybe you're right in the midst of the weekend depending on when you're listening
00:13It is after all the podcast, but we are coming at you on a Friday afternoon
00:18Right in the thick of all things
00:20Olympic group play the men's basketball squad the US team one more game before they get in a quarterfinal play as we sit here
00:27Right now this is not going to be an olympic deep dive per se because obviously if you're not listening to the show for another
00:35Four or five days. I mean things are
00:37You're gonna know match-ups and things like that by then
00:40So heck I mean they the us could already be on to the semifinals in the semifinals
00:45I don't know. So we're not gonna mess around with all that. This is not a daily show
00:48It's a big picture show pleased to be here with you adam kaufman evan valente and keith smith from spot track, of course
00:55Uh pretty popular podcast in his own right the uh, the front row program that you guys have the front row show
01:01It's great to have you back here with us keith been a bit
01:04I appreciate yeah front office show is uh our show
01:07Yeah, it's all good. I I was getting I I didn't want to pull it up as I was saying it in my head
01:12I'm going I know front is in there
01:15You're in the neighborhood. That's all that matters man. It's close. I'm a
01:19Dick the front office show. Thank you. You know what it has a bigger audience than this show has right for good reason
01:26Anyway, so go and check that one out on youtube and subscribe and all of that keith
01:30It has been a bit good to have you back here with us. Obviously, uh, just again in a big picture sense
01:35How have you enjoyed the start to olympic play?
01:38Yeah, it's been fun. It's uh, you know, it's it's just nice to have high level basketball
01:43uh in the middle of the summertime, I enjoy summer league, but
01:47Yeah as much as I enjoy it
01:48It's not exactly good basketball and coming off of a very invested finals run as celtics guys
01:55It felt like man now summer league is like, oh gosh, this is bad
02:00Um, but it's it's still you know, I enjoy it. But yeah, the olympics high level international hoops is great
02:06It's it's always fun to see the guys going out there competing and trying to trying to do something for the country
02:11I always enjoy the olympics
02:13We're about a month removed at this point in time from
02:17The celtics and derrick white and of course everyone remembers the uh, you know famous
02:23picture that was going around on social media after he signed the deal the
02:27You know the hat the celtics or the balls hat the white was wearing and just you know further, uh, you know, just
02:33Fans falling in love with this man on a daily basis, but it's not just celtics fans at this point in time
02:39We were talking about this just before we came on the air. It's uh
02:42Fans across the world quite frankly who just love the nba and just love team usa derrick white
02:49There was a little bit of I don't want to say it was white centric controversy the fact that he
02:54Jumped on team usa as that last spot in filling in for kawaii leonard the controversy
02:59Obviously as we all know centered around the fact that it was jaylen brown who was left off
03:04Not so much that it was derrick white who was selected, but my god
03:08It just further shows that he is such a seamless perfect fit
03:13In any situation that you put him in to where I think back to now
03:18You know again july 1st in that four-year 126 million dollar contract that brad stephens locked him up to and you can't help but think
03:27What what could they have you know, what what could he have demanded? What what and derrick white's?
03:31uh, yeah, i'm sure he's making more money than he ever could have envisioned for anyone that knows his journey and as you know,
03:37Obviously the uh, it was such an uphill climb to the nba and and never mind becoming what he has at this point in time
03:43But I mean pay that man 700 million dollars because he is just a perfect player in a perfect situation
03:50No matter where you put him
03:51How impressed have you been by derrick white and his fit on team usa and his importance quite frankly to team usa kid
03:58Yeah, it's uh, it's funny because I don't mean to say this to any form a negative way
04:03But i'm not surprised like this is what derrick white does he just fits in right?
04:08He just goes does whatever is asked of him comes up big makes big plays
04:13Uh, there was a point in the last game against south sudan where the game's getting a little tight. They made a run
04:21Derrick white gets the ball up makes the move makes his little off ball move
04:25Finds himself behind the line ball comes to him and I just knew it was going in because that's what he's what he's done
04:30Since pretty much since he came to boston and he has been you know great for them and I said this when
04:36Jalen brown didn't get picked and I said look jalen brown if it was just taking the most talent jalen brown
04:42Probably should have been there day one
04:44Of the team right and even before they took a couple other guys, but a lot of it was this late in the game
04:51We're replacing somebody literally weeks before we jump on a plane or days rather before we jump on a plane
04:57Let's get in somebody who is just gonna fit if he doesn't play a lot
05:01He's not gonna say anything. He's just gonna do his thing. And now what is impressive is they need him
05:08They need him out there and that's gonna show up in other games too other teams that have strong guards
05:13It was all kind of falling to drew holiday to be that guard defender
05:16Now they've got the other guy that can go on a minute. My favorite part has been i'm not gonna call him out
05:21Who it was but a very prominent lakers account tweeted out
05:27I hate how much I like derrick white and how good he is
05:30And that just tells you like that's perfect right there like just made me so happy
05:36yeah, the world's falling in love with derrick white and we're all witness to it, it's just
05:40It's fun because you know not too long ago a couple years ago
05:44Everybody was given this other a lot of flack for trading
05:47So many assets to get derrick white and now he's just an invaluable part of not only a world champion nba team
05:54But hopefully an olympic gold medal, uh team here with team usa
06:00It's it's amazing though because you know, you look at him and you're like, there's no way this guy's awesome at basketball
06:05Just look at his appearance. Sometimes it's like with the hair or the bald head and the missing teeth and all like no
06:10He's just he gives the game exactly what it needs and what's fun as celtics fans as we sit here and chat
06:17It's like the whole world's catching up to what all of us got to enjoy for the past seven months
06:22It's like yeah, you know having both true holiday and derrick white on the same team
06:28Is an awesome time and the one thing I keep coming back to and I keep thinking about this
06:33Big picture because we always talk about big picture show
06:37Everybody's seen it on the on the grand world stage now
06:40But i've often thought about this and you go back and forth with every roster in the nba, but when you look at
06:46those two guys specifically
06:49I don't know if you think differently here keith, but I didn't think that this might be the most complete
06:55Backcourt in the entire league with these two guys. I mean you had jalen brown and he's sort of a guard wing hybrid
07:01But if you just talk about guards
07:03Specifically and yeah, they're they're good ones oklahoma city. I'm not going to discount that obviously kairi and luka are awesome
07:09But they just lost these two guys the nba finals, right?
07:13Uh, you know, whoever jalen brunson has next to him is a formidable, you know duo
07:19But to the celtics and and now that we're seeing the world stage
07:22It sounds like the best backcourt in the league because it seems like they might
07:26Yeah, it's certainly right up there. I think we whenever we do those rankings
07:30Priority goes to the best offensive players, right? So I think if you just asked an average fan, they're going to tell you that
07:38Luka and kairi are ahead of white in holiday just because they're going to look at and say well
07:43Those two guys are awesome and they're it's not that they aren't they are awesome
07:47But they're awesome on one end of the floor
07:49Uh holiday and white I do often wonder what would they do if it was hey, we need you both to score more
07:56We need you to take 15 20 shots a night instead of 10. You know, what would that look like?
08:02There's a chance maybe it doesn't go well, right and it all kind of goes a little sideways on them
08:06But there's a chance it does go really well
08:08I mean drew holiday's been nearly a 20 point per game scorer before in his career
08:12I think derrick white could be that if he needed to
08:15But it's the defense the playmaking that's what is so great to see
08:20uh with those two guys and that's what's really cool is getting to see how many people now have come around to like
08:26Oh my gosh, like these two guys like boston gets this every night out of these two guys who like
08:32People you would have hoped would have seen it in the playoffs
08:34But I do think some nba fans after a long season their team's eliminated
08:38I do think they tune out a little bit and now they're seeing it on the international stage and steve kerr is 100
08:45Anytime it's like I need to get a stop
08:47He's going to them the two of them together
08:49In the backcourt because he knows they're gonna get they're gonna come up with that stop for him
08:53The other underappreciated thing with derrick white that everybody's seeing now loving the shot blocking like people like how does he do this?
09:00He's six three in every game. He's coming up with one or two blocks and they're legit blocks at the rim
09:06So yeah, I mean this is a love fest for those two guys and and well earned by both of them
09:12I love the d-weight d-weight had a comment. Sorry to cut you off adam
09:15D-weight had a comment of like I don't know how derrick white blocks so many shots when he's a vertical of like 20
09:21And then people pointed out that derrick white has a higher vert than the d-weight to be fair
09:27what I do love is
09:29D-weight also
09:30Young d-wade was an exceptional shot blocker unbelievable. Yeah, so it's really cool that that wade is here
09:38Watching derrick white kind of do a little bit of what d-weight used to do back in the day
09:43Yeah
09:43I just think the other thing that it
09:46screams to
09:47People out there who play basketball at any level be it in the nba in college in high school
09:55Recreationally over at the why you're a kid growing whatever the lesson here
10:01is that
10:02We get so caught up
10:04You know on this show other shows any show I mean certainly, you know your mainstream
10:09uh espns and fox sports and all of that we we
10:12Debate the merits of superstars and we rank them and we you know
10:17Who's the goat and who wants to take for this guy to become the goat?
10:21How do you get in the goat conversation? It just all these types of
10:27situations where you see olympic play
10:29Or even quite frankly just watching the celtics as closely as the three of us and I presume many of our viewers and listeners do
10:36it screams the importance of team and
10:40What individuals can do to as we used to always say with marcus smart, but we say it with these guys as well
10:46Impact winning you don't I mean jason tatum
10:49And tyrese haliburton didn't play in that first game for team usa
10:53Obviously steve kerr mixed it up in the next game haliburton came off the bench tatum started still didn't play as many minutes as
10:59The other starters, but he did start he had other guys like joelle and bead not play now
11:04It's going to look different in this next game as we sit here against puerto rico before you get in the quarterfinal play
11:09But the guys who are consistent
11:12There's no sitting derrick white. There's no sitting drew holiday
11:15Nobody's going to sit here and tell you that either of those two guys are the best players on team usa, but in some ways
11:22They're two of the most important. So I just think
11:25Some of that sometimes keith gets lost and I think that we do a decent job on this show
11:31at least over the course of a regular season or playoff run of
11:34of really harping on the importance of guys like that versus always being fixated on tatum and brown or
11:40You know how porzingis
11:42Plays his role and that sort of thing who's sort of star adjacent at this point in his career
11:47But I know i'm rambling I just think I I sort of marvel as a viewer as a fan
11:53At what guys like white and holiday white in particular honestly do out there to?
11:59really ingratiate themselves with
12:03coaches and teammates and just
12:06General fans to really highlight all the different ways that they contribute
12:11Yeah, I think what we have seen with the celtics since he took over the front office
12:17Brad stevens in a good way is building the team still from a coach's perspective
12:23I think when we've seen it kind of fall apart is when it's the people who are doing both
12:27They have to be the coach and build the team like that because you're always trying to build the team
12:31So you don't get yourself fired as the coach stevens is looking at it from the couple things
12:37I think he is really prioritized is and he said it in his day one kind of press conference
12:43Or it might have been like the email udoka press conference, but it was early on
12:47Where he said we're going to build a team that maximizes everything for tatum and brown
12:52And we want guys who lift them guys who support them guys who are going to understand their place here
12:58And I think for him that's meant I want guys who I know what they are. So al horford i'm gonna go get him
13:04I know derek white is pretty good. I know drew holiday is pretty good. I'm gonna get those guys
13:08I'm gonna extend everybody that I can because then I give myself just surety. I know what i'm doing
13:14I've got guys locked in here and he's done such a good job
13:17With building that up and then that now translates over to the olympic team where holiday is
13:23No, i'm not gonna say ingrained as a starter, but pretty close. Uh there to being, you know, a starter because I think
13:31Uh, steve, kerr eric's bolster tyloo that that crew of coaches knows. Hey, we just plug him in
13:37He if we need him to shoot he's gonna shoot if we need him to defend
13:40Of course, he's gonna do that
13:42He'll move the ball and then derrick white was supposed to be like the 12th man
13:45And I think they got about a day and a half into him being with the team and like now he needs to play
13:50Nothing against tyree salaburton nothing against jason tatum, but tatum skills, especially are duplicative
13:56You have a bunch of guys who don't do the same things. He does already then halburton's best skill is his incredible on ball playmaker
14:04We don't need that like as much because the other guys are gonna have the ball a lot more
14:09With derrick white it is hey get us into our offense and then he's just kind of always moving floating around doing his thing
14:15holiday does does it in slightly different ways, but similar type play those two guys are are unbelievable and that's why
14:22Like when I look at the like celtics
14:26As a team and then I look at the cap sheet. It's like yeah, it's filled up with a lot of money for
14:31Long term here, but we're in a spot where like everything just fits
14:37Maybe two three years from now somebody's aged out
14:40Maybe somebody's not so happy with the role anymore or whatever it is
14:43But as we stand today, they're in a great place and there's there's no reason to you know
14:48Think think otherwise and it's I I keep everybody's so worried about they're so expensive. They're so expensive
14:54Who cares it's not your money?
14:56Like what difference does it make like like i'm happy that they are that they're this expensive because this is what we've been asking for
15:03For years it is build a real title team and then pay to keep it and that's what they've done
15:09Quick break from today's show to tell you today's show is brought to you by game time. I remember
15:15First time I went to a game a socks game when I was a kid
15:18uh, the milwaukee brewers were in town and literally my only
15:24Memory of that is mo von my favorite player at the time hit a home run
15:28I was with my grandparents. It's like the only time he went to fenway park was really a special memory for me
15:33Great memories of your own today with the help
15:37Of game time game time is an authorized ticket marketplace of major league baseball
15:41Which makes getting tickets faster and easier and the prices on game time the app to go down
15:47And the closer gets the first pitch and like my parents do this all the time
15:51They like to go wait till first pitch is gone and then go to like
15:55Whatever ticket box office and just see what they have left and just snack up great deals
15:59Do that with game time with last minute deals all in prices and views from your seat lowest price guaranteed game time
16:07Takes the guesswork out of buying mlb tickets and literally folks socks
16:14red hot
16:15They have had a fun season so far. They're in this great
16:20Uh ride of a 2024 with no expectations kind of hanging on the wild card
16:24We love that use game time to get to fenway or whatever stadium you want to go to
16:29Throughout the rest of the summer again, as you can say with the 60 off buying last minute for sports concerts comedy theater

16:50With game time download the game time app create an account and use the code
16:54clns for twenty dollars off your first purchase terms apply again create an account redeem code
17:02clns for twenty dollars off download game time today last minute tickets lowest prices guaranteed
17:10You know to keep going with that for a second we can sort of get back to some of the money in future
17:15Implications if we even feel like it because that's a conversation that we've got plenty of time to have
17:20As it pertains to guys like white and holiday and and more so white because holiday obviously came to boston already a champion
17:28Elsewhere and like you said a a guy who had scored around 20 points per game at various stops a
17:35Perennial starter in most places all of that white, you know
17:38White, you know, I I think they have unlocked him even more so than obviously what he was on the verge of becoming there
17:45In in san antonio. I mean, I think people forget one
17:48Some people didn't like the trade at the time. You got him for nothing
17:51You got him for what josh richardson and a draft pick maybe and and he's become this guy that makes
17:56130 million dollars over the life of a new four-year contract so often we
18:02Not we I don't think evan and I really ever do this
18:05But but you hear it on sports talk radio all the time
18:07Like it's people love to do like the blame pie thing when and when when things go to hell
18:13not enough, uh
18:14Not often enough keith is is there and evan the uh, the the credit pie for lack of a better way of calling it
18:20you look at that celtics front office and
18:23Obviously at the top of it in in name and enroll in and say and all of that is brad stephens
18:28But mike zarin, uh, you know really kind of a 1a 1b situation
18:32You have austin ainge you have others who we very rarely talk about that play an important role within that space
18:39How do we sort of divvy up who gets credit for?
18:43Like you said building this team in a coach's vision of brad's uh in in
18:49Going out and and seeing
18:52What derrick white could become and his fit with this team to acquire him in deciding?
18:57Hey, we need to pounce and it may seem like a no-brainer to some people but not everyone did it
19:02Not everyone tried to do it going out and saying we need to go out and get through holiday and fit him into this
19:07Mix or even to that end chris taps porzingis, you know where?
19:11you're again from the front office podcast, you know as as someone who
19:16Looks so deeply at the inner workings of front offices
19:21How do you divvy all of that up when you look at boston?
19:25Yeah, I think it's it's a lot of people too
19:27I'll even include denny ainge in that because he never traded tatum or brown, right?
19:31he stayed
19:32Staunch in his belief that those are the guys like and and whether that was he just didn't find the right deal to move them
19:38In or doesn't come together, but he never moved either one of them and in multiple times
19:44I I was even critical at times where i'm like
19:47Is this guy ever going to be as good as player x who they're trying to trade for is right now
19:52And that's where you know, and i'll hand up I was wrong at times about both guys where I was like, you know what?
19:58I'm, glad they kept them because that's a big part of why why they win
20:01But yeah, I think you know ange and did you early on I think stevens you're absolutely right
20:07Zarin is you know, it's it's kind of funny because i'm thinking in some ways
20:11it's probably easy right now because it's like
20:13You get a max and you get a max and you get a max and off we go
20:17Right, and that's that those are easy to hand out
20:19Where that'll become like more on the rest of the guys is later
20:24When you need to backfill whether it's through the draft or you need to backfill through
20:28Minimum signings or targeted overseas guys that you're trying to bring in on minimum type deals and those things
20:34That's where we're gonna have to see those guys really make their money because we're gonna be in a spot where
20:39They're probably gonna be capped out probably second apron team for at least a few years
20:44So it'll all come together, but i'll also give credit to like email
20:48initially coming in and saying
20:50All right, you know what i'm going to chat you you we're going to build everything for tatum and brown to succeed
20:54But i'm going to challenge them too to be better than they've ever been
20:57And you have to bring it every night on both ends of the floor
21:00You can't just be content there and he he pushed and then joe mizula
21:04Coming in after and saying this is how I believe we'll win
21:07And when we lose playing my way, we're probably going to lose and it'll look really bad, right?
21:12because every every
21:137-8 games we're going to have like an 8 for 40 shooting night from three
21:18And it's going to be a disaster and we're probably going to get killed
21:21But the other seven games we're going to probably steamroll teams and and blow them out because I believe in the way
21:27This is how we can win with this team. And then anytime the pressure got turned up a little of like
21:34Maybe it's not work. He went almost the other way of now
21:37I'm going to push even further that you didn't like when we shot 43s. We'll shoot 50
21:42You know
21:42we'll shoot 70 of our shots from three and those kind of things and really amped it up and I think
21:47When you put it all together that it's the same thing with the players on the roster
21:51Tatum and brown is the stars will always get the bulk of their credit
21:55But this team doesn't win obviously without porzingis and the things he did holiday in white
22:00We talked about al horford, of course
22:02But even guys like hauser and pritchard and cornet and tillman and just going on down the roster
22:07Like all those guys had their moments at some point whether it's through the regular season
22:12Or in the playoffs where they they were all really big and it's it's one of those things where I think they've really hit on a mix
22:18That's why every time it felt like what was it every 15 minutes
22:23We got a message from either woj or sham saying so picture resigning player x
22:28And people like are they just going to bring everybody back and I was like, why wouldn't you?
22:32Like just bring everybody back like it's it worked so well and and the rest of the league has to now catch you
22:38You know, you don't have to reinvent yourself until something comes along that says you have to and they'll play probably a little differently next year
22:45But for right now, yeah, I mean they're in a great shape and it's yeah, it's an eye. It's it's uh, yeah
22:50If we're if like you said we like to divvy up plane pie. Yeah, let's serve the credit buffet here and everybody can eat
22:57Yeah, that's a huge thing
22:58It's it's it's and like I listen a lot of michael lombardi and the gm shuffle
23:02So I I like to listen to the way how to build a team and building a team
23:07Consists of a message consistent message from the top down and one of the things that you got to admire about this group is
23:14They don't shy away from what they are who they are and what their mindset's going to be and that that comes from brad
23:21from
23:22Austin age and mike zarin down to joe missoula down to jason tatum and you know
23:26Like it's a consistent message from the top to the bottom
23:29That's why this team is so successful and has been I mean the proofs in the pudding
23:33They've been they've been one of the most successful teams again
23:36Now they've won the title you can now add them to the list of champions
23:39Like they've been more successful than basically every other team the past eight years outside of like golden state
23:45Okay, so they the proofs in the pudding what I love about the way that they set this up
23:50is
23:51like eventually and we talked about this with mannex last week a little bit coffin about how
23:57like the
23:59wick and steve and everybody involved with the ownership part of things always told brad like hey, we'll
24:05We'll trade we'll allow you to trade for whoever you want to as long as they bring us close to a title if they do
24:10We'll pay them if not, then things get weird and they get tough
24:16What's great about this particular team is like look at the contracts on this roster
24:22There aren't really many bad ones like sam hauser just signed for less than duncan robinson got five years ago
24:29Sam hauser was way more playable in the playoffs than duncan robinson's ever been right?
24:34You have derrick white getting a big contract one that he would have eclipsed next year if he was in the free agent market also
24:41Now that is in the team usa stage
24:44Who doesn't want derrick white like he's awesome drew holiday if you're a contending team
24:50Looking for a piece
24:52Drew holiday at an x number if you can afford that number
24:56Makes a ton of sense because of what he brings intangibly to your team
24:59So keith as you look at the roster breakdown, yes, tatum's gonna get a ton of money
25:04Jalen brown's got a ton of money and chris dabbs with his injury history is dicey
25:09But outside of like chris dabbs, I don't see any bad contracts on this roster really at all. Am I crazy?
25:15No, you're not
25:16They're all
25:17They're all tradable contracts if if you know push came to shove
25:21Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, that's those are the combo there, right the the closest thing to me that is
25:28I'll just call it worrisome. I'm not gonna call it bad is what is that last year or two of holiday look like?
25:35But at that point you're probably able to get out of it if you need to
25:39and into something else so I think what's really happened is
25:42There is a I said this to someone the other day and like that's a really
25:46Good way of putting it because it made me feel good about making the point that way was
25:50There's a lot of contracts, but there's no bad ones like there's a lot of money invested in this team
25:56Obviously, we know that now they're between
25:59Salary and tax they're going to be over a quarter billion dollars in total investment for this season
26:05But that's fine
26:06You know, I think we've all heard that you know billion dollars in money given out this this summer
26:11Uh in terms of long-term deals and that that is what it is
26:15But yeah, it's it really is it feels like everything is good now
26:19the
26:20The other thing is even some of the ones that are a little more
26:24Like porzingis
26:26That's only got two years left. So if it turns out this dude just can't stay on the court enough to matter
26:32They can move on from it relatively easily and go in a different direction and in tatum and brown are they're so good
26:39They're all like you said evan. They're always going to be max guys
26:42So they're just gonna you know, that's just that's what you do in this league and they'll figure it all out later
26:47And yeah, and the the one that is to me
26:51really key is derek white's because
26:54Porzingis took the shorter deal because of the injury history and because of he wanted to lock in money right away
27:00He didn't want to wait so they got that done
27:03Holidays contract is what it is because of his age
27:06White is the guy who he could have said
27:08Now I want to go into free agency because I think I can cash in
27:12One time in my career really really big he probably wouldn't have been a max guy
27:16But he would have got more than what boston's paying him and instead I think he looked at and said
27:21Why do I need you know five million more a year? I'm good here
27:25Like I love where i'm playing and the other reality is too
27:29He's so
27:30Ridiculously popular in the city. He makes that money back now, right?
27:35Because I mean every time I turn on yeah, i'm in orlando, but anytime I turn on a boston, uh
27:41Channel, it's derek white doing something somewhere right or it's on social media
27:45He's doing sam adams commercials and all you know that stuff. I mean, it's clear, you know, he's beloved
27:51So that that is that means an awful lot for guys too is to be in a spot plus I think we need to remember
27:58He's had two kids since he's been with the celtics
28:01And same thing with drew holiday when he got there. They were like, we love this city
28:04These guys don't want to move their families around right? They want to stay. Hey, let's get one place
28:08And let's be there. Uh, then it also deal with their quite doesn't help that or it doesn't hurt rather
28:13The dad's a huge celtics fan and it's probably like hey, come on, you're gonna break my heart and leave like let's just stay
28:20All I can say is thank god. They're not in a position that the nuggets could maybe make a run at him
28:26Because maybe that's the only place he would ever go
28:28If he ever wanted to a couple years from now and all my other thing is let's all
28:33Continue to hope st
28:34Louis doesn't get an expansion team because I think that's the only place tatum would ever go
28:38You did to leave for as things stand right now now five years from now. Who knows?
28:43Maybe he's like i've done everything I could do here. I'm ready for a new challenge. We see that all the time
28:48but but yeah other than that
28:50I mean, I don't know why guys would ever want to leave because they're in such a great place and
28:53You you got paid you got a lot of money
28:55You're where you want to be and most importantly you have a chance to win every year
29:00So it's all all right there for them
29:02Yeah, and and I mean you summed it up really well in terms of sort of the total package what it all means because people
29:07Get like you mentioned that you know
29:09Do I really want to go somewhere else where I can make five million more dollars a year versus what i'm making now?
29:14But maybe you're in a worse situation be it personally family or just even if everything is great in a social
29:22Sort of setting the team just doesn't as good and you don't have as good a chance of winning which again
29:27is your profession is your professional goal, and I I just I don't believe and
29:33take guys like
29:34Jordan or lebron or I look out brady, right?
29:38Like I I I don't think that as guys play I mean maybe for some but not for true competitors
29:43That winning gets any less important to you
29:45I think in many ways it gets more important because the more you win
29:49The more you want to be measured up against, you know
29:52Not just greats but the all-time greats and you know in just lift yourself into that conversation. So
29:59there's just the the money like
30:02We don't
30:03I know we know this intuitively, but we don't really
30:06Not that we have to spend enough time sort of thinking about the context of how absurd
30:11This money is and I I don't mean like oh these guys are
30:15Overpaid or whatever. It's you know, this is
30:18obviously
30:19Where we're at in professional sports and different sports are different
30:22Obviously like people in the wnba aren't getting paid the way they are in the nba people in the nhl
30:27Aren't getting paid the way they are in in the nba hell and you know
30:31Most players in in the nfl aren't getting paid the way the average player is in the nba
30:36and so like congrats to all those, you know for collectively bargaining yourself into a
30:41A hell of a deal an influx of new tv money and all that stuff whenever that comes in
30:46It's it's why danny ain't said a while back and we've talked to you about this before
30:50people sort of uh
30:52Get enamored with arguing about the validity of a contract based on its number. It's not about the dollars. It's about
30:58percentage of cap and
31:00Jason tatum to use an example and jaylen brown you could use him as well. I mean these guys make
31:06Never not even endorsements and I know there's the whole thing with brown not really having as many but tatum has a
31:12A bevy of endorsements. He may have more than any other player in the nba right now
31:16It just salary makes triple the money that derrick white does, you know
31:21year over year and so
31:24Derrick white is still seeing it in his in his four years
31:28130 million dollars considerably more money than the three of us will see in our lifetimes combined derrick white is doing
31:35Just fine, obviously economically so to that point
31:40Why go why look for something different what I wonder here keith and I I i've never really thought about this until just now
31:48otherwise, I
31:49You know might have done some digging around to see if I could support it with some numbers
31:53But you know, i'm i'm wondering like people like to talk about
31:57Tax penalties and you know, what is you signed sam hauser now?
32:02What does hauser's deal actually cost you because of what it costs you in relation to tax penalties and yada yada yada
32:08Like you said the celtics are invested a quarter billion dollars into this year's team
32:12Off you hear a lot of people talking about owning a sports franchise in general as a losing proposition
32:19It is a toy more often than not you are losing money on it
32:22And and I just maybe that's true for some but you look at these valuations going up year over year for the best teams
32:28Like the grosbeck estate, you know
32:31The family's going to get five billion dollars for the boston celtics whenever it comes a point that they sell and i'm wondering
32:38you know when you
32:40Own a team a successful team like the boston celtics that yeah has certainly
32:45Financially gone all in on its players in hopes of trying to win repeat championships
32:50You have 18 you're looking for 19, maybe even 20
32:53You have a window here man that you want to try and take advantage of what?
32:58Are you actually?
32:59costing yourself on the players and on
33:03On championship rings and all these other expenses obviously
33:07Versus what you're bringing in in merchandise in sales in you know
33:12The tickets and all everything that comes along with owning a successful team that people want to represent hell the boston redsox
33:20you know have
33:21Stunk largely for a number of years and yet
33:25A redsox cap or a redsox t-shirt or sweatshirt is still
33:28You know one of the top five most popular across sports probably definitely baseball that you're going to see
33:34Across the world definitely across the united states. So where is that threshold drawn to where you know teams actually are losing money
33:43Yeah, I don't it's funny because it tends to come up when we get into like cba negotiation time, right?
33:49And it's it's been good to see in the last couple of rounds of negotiation
33:53That hasn't been the talking point like if we go all the way back to like like 1999 and then I think it was
34:012012
34:02We saw like teams are like half the teams are losing money and all these things and like yeah
34:07But you're talking about you're losing money
34:09This year because you have a bunch of bad contracts and your team stinks
34:14But two years ago when you didn't have bad contracts and you're good
34:17You weren't losing money and my thing is always the people who own these teams
34:21I'm, not going to necessarily say they're all super duper smart people, but they have smart people working for them
34:28Not necessarily with the teams always but just in general and if it was hey, wait a minute
34:33You're blowing your family's fortune here through your sports team
34:38They'd probably sell them and I think what what what we're seeing is too
34:43The nba it's an open secret. Not even a secret anymore. Now. They're gonna expand
34:47They've they're now talking about it, you know very openly that that's probably next item on the list
34:53But one of the things that's been interested is interesting about the process is two teams
34:58Is it going to be four teams like where are they going?
35:01So we're already hearing baseball is talking about adding teams hockey's talking about adding teams
35:06What the nba doesn't want to do is they don't want to be
35:09Second third or god forbid last to a market like they're going to be in seattle and potentially in las vegas
35:16Pending whenever the a's like fully relocate there
35:20So what they want to do is they want to be in a position where hey, let's get us back
35:24Let's let's be let's be the team because the reality is what happens in a lot of these cases is
35:30You know me living here. I can't buy season tickets to four different teams, right?
35:36Like that's not going to happen
35:37Especially if it's hockey and basketball and that's going on at the same time of year
35:41So that may be all right, I can only get one. Well if you're first there, right now
35:46We got your money and you're you're invested in the nba team and if anybody else falls behind
35:51Well, we'll figure that out later
35:53But I think what's my bigger point there is they don't have any shortage of people lining up to say I want a team
36:00Like I want to buy a team whether it's an existing team or I want an expansion team
36:05We know las vegas already has I think we're up to three or four ownership groups already basically saying
36:11We're going to own the vegas team
36:12Well, it's only going to be one of them and seattle's got money coming in and there's like adam silver's rattled off about five or six
36:19Or seven other cities where he's like we have interest there and we're already we are already know
36:24It's going to be like five billion dollars per expansion team
36:27So to your point where like grouse packs did the family you're going to sell the team
36:32Well, they're going to get a bunch of money, but that new owner coming in
36:36Yeah, they're going to pay a bunch of money for the team. The team's going to be expensive
36:40Salary wise but they're going to get a check from whoever buys in as an expansion team
36:44Probably two of them maybe more you're going to get that the tv money starts going to you instead
36:50That's now higher than anybody ever thought it would have been on this new contract. So I think everybody's doing pretty good
36:57Yeah, if we really went through profit and loss
36:59There's probably a handful of teams that come in, you know in the in the red each year where it is
37:05All right
37:05We lost a little bit of money
37:07But the reality is unless you are a team like the pistons who now have been down down down for years
37:14yeah, if you flip it pretty quickly, you're probably going to come back around and people are going to be super excited because
37:20They'll buy your merchandise. You'll buy tickets
37:22They're gonna buy all this stuff and and then you get your share of the league wide profits as well
37:27So I don't think anybody's sitting there saying man, you know what?
37:30We're we're just you know
37:31Throw money away on this because I also think teams have gotten smarter
37:35And the league's gotten smarter about how they handle things as a whole as well
37:41For sure, I mean, you know, this has been a little like
37:45I always shudder at two things one the a is moving. I'm just still mad about that. That's that's absolute nonsense
37:50And then with detroit, we'll always have money ball left. I just do come on like that
37:55That's such a the fishers are a joke and I don't want to get into it because it's gonna make me angry
38:00And then yeah, the point about detroit's a good one because like as soon as they're good that that city's gonna go nuts
38:06So like once they figure out how to draft correctly and put together the team correctly and pay only one coach instead of two
38:13They're gonna be just fine
38:14Three, I think we're on now, right? Are we on three because money because you're yeah
38:19Oh, are you still paying duane casey? Uh, it might be he might finally be done. Okay, but we're close
38:24Okay, I know the sons are on three. Yeah
38:27Oh
38:29Man, um, the one thing i'll say like just to change gears for a second, uh, radically just because it's been making me very angry
38:39That it's it's it stinks that we're only once a week at them because we can't address the stuff in real time
38:44The tatum not starting stuff
38:47Was way a way bigger story than it needed to be like this is it got
38:52It just got to be oh, yeah, not playing it got to be so obnoxious and annoying
38:57It's like dude, they won by 26 who cares like really?
39:00We're really talking about this for like the third or fourth straight day, man
39:03This is a really slow summer if it would the would the major league baseball trade deadline like right here
39:09We're talking about how tatum isn't playing for like three straight days
39:13Did you this got out of control for you keith because i'm sitting here i'm looking at this thing
39:16Every day i gotta wake up and everybody's just griping i'm like dude
39:19Can we just get past this and get to just get like he didn't play whatever mb didn't play
39:26So the guys aren't gonna play it's not a big deal for me
39:28But everybody wanted to scream about it while they were out one side or the other drove me nuts
39:32Yeah, I know my personal opinion was I thought it was stupid that he didn't play
39:36Much like I think it's dumb that halbert wasn't playing. I I don't understand why mb didn't play
39:42I don't I don't find kers reasoning behind it to be
39:45Overly doesn't overly make sense to me
39:48I feel like every other team usa coach that's ever coached this team
39:52Unless they had like the token college kid on the team who was really designed like you're only gonna play the last couple minutes
39:59I'll blow out. They got everybody into the games
40:02Uh team usa women who have been killing everybody by 30 40 points for years
40:08Wins yesterday, right? Yeah, they're
40:11Unbelievable and their games are never even close
40:14Everybody plays for them
40:16And my thing is like there's 200 minutes. I get it. It's less than there isn't an nba game
40:23I fully understand that but you can get everybody in the games like just you'll figure it out
40:28All that said yeah that it went on for days and days and days that part was to me that was
40:34yeah, there's not much going on and I was with you like I was like
40:37I had the same thing I put on a show and I was like, all right
40:40Maybe they're talking about a couple of these baseball trades. Nope
40:43They were still on this topic and I was like, well, you know, I guess that is a good thing
40:47Basketball is more popular than baseball trade deadline, you know, maybe not regionally in some places
40:54But overall because we know if they weren't drawing audience to listen to it
40:58They would they'd move on to a different topic
41:00So yeah, I I just I don't love the way cars coach the team and and there's a lot of like yeah
41:06Anybody could coach this team and probably win
41:09It's going to be I just some of the lineup decisions
41:12I haven't been a been a fan of some of the defensive
41:15Coverage is like it it was very clear in game one
41:18Against serbia until spolster was like we got to get out of this switching
41:22Yokich is killing us like get into you just play drop and you know
41:27We're we're gonna play a little bit more conventional styles of defense
41:31Once I went into that they really took off and those kind of things
41:34It's it's like this idea of like, all right. Yeah, they did one by 26
41:38so I really feel like i'm being nitpicky here, but
41:41I I just I didn't understand why I didn't play I thought it was dumb
41:44But it is what it is. I had moved on by the next day
41:47It's that's the funny thing with social media
41:49You make a point and then the person who like didn't see it for two days
41:53Then like sees it and they have to retweet it and come back in your mentions
41:58And it's sometimes like you said the days will just fire you up
42:01It's like man, like we're coming back around to this again, like I was already mad about it now i'm over it
42:06Now you want me to be mad again?
42:07Like like so just yeah, it's one of those things were in the moment
42:10It was dumb, but we move on and yeah, well, we'll see now i'm curious to see who it is tomorrow
42:15that maybe doesn't play well, we'll see if it's
42:17Somebody in that game or maybe maybe they blow puerto rico out by so much that everybody gets in and it doesn't really matter anyway
42:24It's all going to kind of come at you fast and we're eight days away from the gold medal game at this point in time
42:29So when we have our next show, I mean, let's say it's a week from today
42:32I don't know if it will be but let's say it's a week from today
42:35You know, we'll be previewing the gold medal game at that point in time
42:38Does anyone in your mind keith stand the us's way?
42:42um, there's teams that I think can challenge them, I think
42:46What i've said this all along what would get team usa beat is if they really shoot poorly
42:52The other team shoots lights out and team usa is also on top of that is sloppy with the ball
42:57It's got to be a combination of those three things. Otherwise teams just aren't gonna be able to score enough
43:02That's like the secret sauce with this team
43:05They can just go to these defensive lineups that are so devastating that there's like nothing you can do like
43:12If they wanted to play davis bam
43:15Holiday white and then I don't care who the fifth guy is
43:19You're probably not going to be very successful scoring on them
43:22It's just that's how good those guys are and can be as a collective
43:26so
43:28That said germany's beating them in the past
43:30Germany has the ability to shoot lights out. They play bigs that can space the floor and spread team usa out
43:37So that'll be be an interesting challenge. They also have nba level guys
43:41So there's not going to be any like no one in on that team is going to be like, oh man, it's lebron
43:46It's they've all played with and against lebron before
43:50Um, I think that canada can absolutely give them a challenge like they're canada's
43:55You got 10 out of 12 guys or nba players and there's some really really good ones on that team, too
44:01That said canada has not struggled
44:05But has had moments in the group stage where it's like you can just see
44:08They're just not on the level that team usa is so unless somebody gets that that that trifecta of team
44:14Uso he shoots poorly. They're sloppy and you shoot lights out. I don't think there's a team that can beat them
44:19I don't think there's a team that can challenge them
44:22Keith smith again from spot track also host the front office show with trevor lane. You can get that on twitter
44:29He has his account, uh at keith smith, uh nba at you can check out the front office show which
44:36That is the twitter account and at uh front office show and of course, uh, you know always
44:41Like I said widespread audience for that show that you should definitely check out especially
44:46In season or around major moments be a trade deadline free agency all of that. I mean everything spikes
44:52And so keith, we always enjoy having you on here with us
44:55Uh, hopefully we'll be able to you know wedge another one in before the season gets going but we're sitting here
44:59I can't believe we're already into august and like you said it's fun to watch
45:03meaningful basketball
45:04Which obviously olympic play is with uh, some of the biggest players and best name biggest names and best players on the planet and all
45:10Of that, uh, it's a far cry from the summer league stuff that we were watching back in july
45:15But uh soon enough it's going to be pre-season basketball and then the chase for banner 19
45:20So I look forward to breaking all of that down here with you
45:23Yeah, I appreciate you guys having me anytime you ask i'm always happy to jump on with you
45:27I uh, I just on that note I sent a text to a couple people with this celtics and I was like, hey
45:32It's august 1st training camp starts next month and they're like get out of here like go away for like a few days
45:40But yeah, they actually start earlier them in denver than anybody else does because they're going over to to dubai to play so
45:47Uh going to be a really short summer for tatum and holiday and white. They're going to get home put their feet up
45:53Hopefully and that's all they're going to do for a few weeks and then then uh, right right back to work
45:58That's why i'll just caution everybody the team starts a little slow out of the gates
46:03I'm, not going to be surprised you had a bunch of guys play all summer. Of course. I guess is going to be out
46:08I don't know that they're going to feel the need to push push push
46:11Uh right out of the gates next year. They may start a little slow, but that doesn't mean people aren't gonna be like
46:16What's going on? You know, they lost, you know three games in november, you know, what is happening here?
46:21You know, but it's it's yeah, I mean I can't it's gone by so fast before we know it
46:25It's going to be going to be time for another season again
46:28I'll be ready. I can't wait
46:30Look, they they mowed down the rest of the nba last year. I'm not even talking playoffs regular season
46:36They absolutely destroyed the league
46:39They know what it takes to win a championship. They have now done it
46:43Yeah, you you want home court as long as possible, but they don't need it, you know, not if they're healthy
46:49They don't need it. So it's uh, you know the top as long as they're a top four seed
46:55I think that's probably all joe really
46:58You know in his heart of hearts cares about sure
47:00They want one
47:01But I think all I really care about is let's have home court to
47:05Start this thing off because like you said i'm porzingis
47:07You'll be lucky if porzingis on the floor for half the year between the injury and rest days maintenance days
47:14whatever else that they've got going on with him horford's gonna miss time this
47:18I'm with you. I you know consider i'm not saying bet the under in terms of the wins but consider it because
47:24a step back in the regular season for uh, ultimate
47:28Heights achieved in the postseason very realistic for this squad
47:31But anyway conversation for another day as we get closer to the season for em
47:34Valenti, of course for keith smith from spot track and the front office show
