00:00Red Sox have spent some money. Left-handed reliever Auraldis Chapman has agreed to a
00:07one-year, $10.75 million contract pending a physical. Sources tell Jeff Passan and ESPN
00:15Boston sought left-handed relief help for their bullpen. They land the 36-year-old Chapman.
00:21Chris Cotillo had the first report that the Red Sox were close to an agreement over at
00:25MassLive.
00:26Not great, Bob.
00:27So, Keith, you're not a fan?
00:28I'm not a fan. Auraldis Chapman, in the end of 2015, involved in an alleged domestic violence
00:32incident with his girlfriend. A pending trade to the Dodgers was put on hold and then canceled.
00:38He was subsequently traded to the Yankees. The incident, he was accused of pushing his
00:43girlfriend, putting his hands around her neck, choking her, and firing eight gunshots. He
00:49was then suspended 30 games as a result of his, quote, use of a firearm and the impact
00:55of that behavior on his partner. He was the first player disciplined by the new personal
00:59conduct policy enacted in 2015.
01:02If you were a Patriot, they'd let you play.
01:04Yeah, you could play the very next week.
01:06Apparently, Major League Baseball suspended Auraldis Chapman.
01:08No, I don't like, I've never liked Auraldis Chapman. He was really good with the Reds
01:12and then he had his moments with the Yankees, although Devers took him deep that one time,
01:17which was awesome. And then he's bounced around. Since the Yankees, he's played for the Royals,
01:22Rangers. And as you said, most recently, the Pirates, where he had 14 saves last year
01:29in 61 and two thirds innings. He did have 98 strikeouts. I mean, that's a crap ton.
01:3498 strikeouts in 61 innings. He has a 14 K per nine of 14 plus 14.3 K per nine. His career,
01:42that's right around his career. It was about 15. Yeah, no, he was lights out for a while.
01:46He had a three, seven, nine ERA, which again, for a late inning reliever is not the greatest.
01:51That's not the worst either. But yeah, the first move 10.75 million for Auraldis Chapman.
01:57So almost $11 million. I don't love that. No, I don't love that. He's 36. Don't love that.
02:02No, he didn't close last year. Well, he did have 14 days, but he wasn't their main closer.
02:08Is that what you're telling me? I don't know. Okay. So maybe there's, was there an injury
02:12there? I don't know enough about the Pirates, but okay. He's 36. Don't love it. 11 million.
02:15Don't love that. Does that mean there, this is what they're going to start doing? Signing guys
02:19like this, like four or five guys like this, as opposed to a big ticket item. Would you rather
02:23have Auraldis Chapman or Kenley Jansen? Oh, I know he's not coming back. I think I would still
02:32rather have Jansen. They just got younger at closer. Jansen's a year older than Chapman,
02:37but Jansen last year who did have 27 saves, his K per nine was 10 and his ERA was 329.
02:46Yeah. I think I'd rather have Jansen, but Jansen, I don't want either one pretty bad
02:51teammate at the end of the year. Maybe there's a righty lefty thing there, but again, so
02:56yeah, maybe so too much money. He's too old. Uh, he's bad guy. Yep. And he has not had a sub three
03:04ERA, which for a reliever, I feel like is that's high. I'm not trying to get up on my high horse.
03:10Hang on. 2019 was the last time he had a sub three ERA. Yeah. He hasn't been dominant in a while.
03:15I don't, he throws hard and he strikes guys out, but no, he strikes guys out. He walks guys.
03:21Like he's been a high whip guy now, uh, every year since he's a good villain though. Like whether
03:25he's on the Yankees or somebody else, he's the easy guy to root against now he's on your team.
03:29I hate it. So yeah, I think you can do better. And like, and I know by the end of it, hopefully
03:34they signed a bunch of players and there's like a lot of new roster things. There's something about
03:38being the first guy in free agency that they signed this big, big wave, all these rumors about
03:43like Juan Soto and Corbin burns and max free and all these guys that are in on, and then they got
03:47her all as Chapman. Like I don't want to roll as Chapman. No one was really clamoring for that. I
03:51didn't think wouldn't you just rather have Liam Hendricks. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think Chris Martin
03:56back, especially if Martin Chapman's not going to close. Yeah. I'd rather have Jansen or Martin
04:00back then. I still kind of want Whitlock to save, although I know he'll get hurt like the third
04:04game in. So you can't really do that, but they need a bullpen help. I just wonder what this
04:08signals. So you can react to it. 6, 1, 7, 7, 7, 9, 7, 9, 3, 7,
04:12red Sox made their first signing 11 million. That's that's rich. Yeah. Especially when they
04:17have 70 million to spend going into the off season below the CBT. So now you've used 11 of that.
04:23If we're assuming they're going to stay below the, the, the tax line or they're not going to go very
04:27far into the luxury tax. Yeah. How much more do they have to spend and who are they going to
04:31spend that on when you're wasting almost 11 million on a roll? This Chapman 11 million. Don't love that.
