00:00Jaron Duran asked for 4 million from the Red Sox, the Red Sox filed for 3.5 million, they are taking him to arbitration.
00:07Dude.
00:08Over a half a million dollars.
00:09So, okay.
00:10For a guy who, and the more I read up on this, you know, MLB trade rumors and whatnot, and it's just a projection, but they projected him to get in arbitration almost 5 million, 4.8, 4.9.
00:20Yeah.
00:21So you're getting a deal by him asking for 4.
00:23You're already getting that deal, you're half a million dollars apart, and you're going to take the player to arbitration over half a million dollars when you've spent nothing this off season?
00:33It's insane.
00:34It's absolutely insane.
00:35And I understand sometimes maybe you do have to take a player to arbitration.
00:38If you just give everybody everything that they want, all of a sudden your payroll kind of balloons.
00:42So I even sort of understand like the business side of it.
00:45Jaron Duran has far exceeded his current contract.
00:50But this is the way baseball works.
00:51So you have to file for arbitration.
00:53Remember when Theo Epstein was here?
00:55Nobody went to arbitration.
00:56He always found a way.
00:57He always found common ground.
00:58Didn't have to have these court cases where you sit there and you tell the other player or you tell the player why he's not worth what he's asking for.
01:06Even if you like the player, but now you have to be the business side of it.
01:09You're like, you think you're this?
01:11Famously, Mookie Betts went to arbitration.
01:13They told him, you're not Chris Bryant.
01:15You see what Chris Bryant's doing?
01:17You're not him.
01:18He's like, okay.
01:19Yeah, he's right.
01:20You're right.
01:21You're right.
01:22And I would ask Jeremy Swayman about the arbitration process.
01:24Now, maybe he took it way too personal, but still, it hurt him.
01:27Corbin Burns famously went to arbitration with Milwaukee.
01:31No shock.
01:32He wasn't in Milwaukee much longer after that.
01:35This is so insane to me, considering it's the same offseason that they were willing to give Juan Soto $700 million.
01:43Yeah, I'll put that in air quotes.
01:45They wanted it out there that they would.
01:47I'm the one who shouldn't be putting that in air quotes.
01:49That should be you because I actually took the cheese on that one.
01:51Well, right.
01:52But to me, they were just close enough.
01:54But publicly, it looks like you were in the bidding for Juan Soto.
01:57You know who had a similar year to Juan Soto?
02:00Jaron Duran.
02:01And you won't give him half a million dollars?
02:04Nope.
02:05Like, what?
02:07He's not asking for like $100 million.
02:09He's asking for four.
02:11He was eighth in the MVP voting.
02:13Higher than Devers has ever finished, and you gave him $30 million a year.
02:15He was the all-star game MVP.
02:17Now, look, he had his own incident last year on the field.
02:20He did.
02:21But I think he's actually a fun player to watch.
02:23He's one of the few fun players they have on the team to watch.
02:26Okay, also, Lou Merloni on Twitter took the Chris Cotillo tweet about a lot of clubs do this and blah, blah, blah.
02:33And this is what Merloni wrote.
02:35He wrote, I would highly recommend not going to court with Duran.
02:38Those hearings can be tough for any player when the team starts talking about why you're not worth the money.
02:42The team has to know the damage it could cause.
02:44And he kind of left it at that.
02:46If you kind of take it one step further and look at some of the stuff that Jaron Duran has dealt with on and off the field,
02:53how bad it was and what a bad place he was in, what, two years ago?
02:58And, you know, the fans were pretty much against him.
03:00He's walking away from the sport just about.
03:03But he's talked about all these different things that he has had to do to help his mental health.
03:07Correct.
03:08So I don't think it's a good tactic to take with any of your players, let alone somebody like this, who is really good.
03:13Maybe the most important part.
03:14Duran's asking for 10 and he's projected to get five.
03:17Well, you go, OK, you're being unruly.
03:19Sorry, bud.
03:20Yeah. And so maybe you take that player.
03:22He wants four.
03:24You're going to take him to court for three and a half over a half a million dollars.
03:28We say court arbitration.
03:30Now, look, I think they can still settle.
03:32Right. They can still agree to something before actually going through with it.
03:35I hope so.
03:36But they're ready to take him to arbitration over a half a million dollars in a year where they claimed they were ready to spend.
03:42Seven hundred million.
03:43But this also still a barely spent a dime this offseason on real talent.
03:47And to compare it back to the Mookie Betts situation.
03:49This also I think for most people would you wouldn't forget it.
03:55And when it's time to let's say whatever gender and becomes an unrestricted free agent.
04:00And the Red Sox are like, hey, you've played your whole career here.
04:03Fans love you. You love being here.
04:04We'll offer you like 300 million or whatever it is like a big maybe even bigger by the time he gets there.
04:09And he's like, no.
04:10Remember what he did to me before?
04:12Not happening.
04:13There's like the chance of a hometown discount, I think, would go out the window once you go to arbitration.
04:17No, that's true.
04:18As you can jump in on this 617-779-7937.
04:22Our buddy Josh is up in Nashua.
04:24Josh, you you'd move on if you're Duran.
04:26I think you just tweeted this at me.
04:28Yeah.
04:29Yeah, I'd move on from them.
04:31I think that's absolutely a slap in the face.
04:34That's ridiculous.
04:35$500,000.
04:36Like, I'm sure like the amount of money like Jaren Duran brings into the Red Sox organization now is way, way more worth than that.
04:45That's what I would just I would just.
04:48Yeah, I wouldn't even show up.
04:50Yeah.
04:51So, I mean, look, I don't know if he has that much leverage and, you know, maybe he'd win an arbitration, but it is a slap in the face.
04:59There's no doubt about they pay guys way more to rehab.
05:02Great point.
05:03They've brought in so many guys that they knew were hurt and were coming off of Tommy John.
05:06Patrick Sandoval.
05:07Patrick Sandoval, Liam Hendricks, James Paxton.
05:10They have a history of bringing, but I'm saying they're literally doing it this offseason, right?
05:13They have a history of it, but they're doing it this offseason with Patrick Sandoval.
05:16They're like, yeah, come in.
05:17We'll pay you to rehab.
05:18Meanwhile, you play all-star center field and lead off for us, and we can't give you an extra $500,000.
05:22Mike's in Weymouth again.
05:24Hello, Mike.
05:25Hey, guys.
05:26Sorry about that.
05:27I know you've moved on, but I really, for all the sports, I feel like the leadership is so intangible and incredibly important.
05:33These guys spend their whole lives thinking they're individuals and they're special.
05:36And now you give these, like the Bruins, no trade clauses.
05:39So you already made these guys feel special.
05:41And they've gone through three coaches.
05:43So where's the leadership?
05:44It's intangible, delicate, but without it, you have nothing.
05:48You have a bunch of individuals out there, you know, pursued by self-interest, pulling in separate directions.
05:52Yeah, and this goes back to a key scoop on the Bruins.
05:56Pasternak and Marchand not seeing eye-to-eye part of their turmoil.
05:59But it is tough because you're like, in this scenario, it seems like Pasternak's in the wrong.
06:05But he's also the better player who's eight years younger.
06:07So it's like you don't want to reward him, but you're also like, I don't know, as a franchisee, get rid of him?
06:13How do you punish him?
06:14What do you do?
06:15You're choosing the 36-year-old who is not as productive as he used to be versus, look, a younger player having a bad season,
06:20but still a guy who's more on top of his game or at least has the potential to it.
06:24Yeah, it sends a bad message.
06:25That's what I do.
06:26If you've got to pick one and Sweeney has a tough decision to make, I'd trade Marchand.
