00:00:00Hard hat's all about showing up to play hard, doing what it takes to win.
00:00:09If you want to cement legacy, win another.
00:00:11More loop.
00:00:12He's your third center.
00:00:13You don't want to pump him up too much, but it's hard not to.
00:00:16This might surprise you, but this is maybe the most I've ever agreed with you.
00:00:20Come on.
00:00:21I'd love to hear it.
00:00:23What's going on, Noah?
00:00:25John Zandas, Noah Delzel from the Garden Celtics.
00:00:28Fall.
00:00:29Cut it.
00:00:30Fall to the Memphis Grizzlies, 127-121.
00:00:34In one of the weirder games I can remember, weird for so many reasons, Noah, and I don't
00:00:39even know where to begin with it.
00:00:41Just so many of the stats, just the box score itself was bizarre.
00:00:45Jalen Brown having like five shots through three quarters.
00:00:49Drew Holliday being ignored, ignored, shooting 26 times, 17 threes.
00:00:57My goodness gracious.
00:00:59Porzingis injury scare.
00:01:01He comes back.
00:01:02Tatum, pretty much a mess all night.
00:01:04Nobody could shoot the ball at all.
00:01:06Just a weird, weird, weird game.
00:01:08Celtics go 18 for 60 from three, including an NBA record 23 three-point attempts in the
00:01:15first quarter.
00:01:16And I don't know your overall assessment in this game.
00:01:19If I'm to put it in a nutshell, my nickel version of just the headline, Celtics just
00:01:27didn't have the legs tonight.
00:01:29They tried a little.
00:01:31It wasn't lack of effort.
00:01:32They just looked like a tired team.
00:01:34They were sloppy.
00:01:35Shots were short.
00:01:36They weren't hitting.
00:01:37And again, not to make excuses on the back to back, but when they did have that run where
00:01:42they were close in the fourth quarter and it looked like they might be able to kind
00:01:46of, you know, adrenaline might push them over the top.
00:01:49There was nothing left.
00:01:50The way they closed out the game was, was, was, was, was pretty bad both from an execution
00:01:56standpoint and a result standpoint.
00:01:58And they lose and it happens and you lose Memphis is a good team.
00:02:01They played really well.
00:02:02John Morant played great.
00:02:03Jaron Jackson, I don't think has missed in, in three hours.
00:02:09He hit literally everything that he had.
00:02:10So just kind of pulling yourself back and looking at the game, Noah, what's your primary
00:02:15takeaway here?
00:02:16Yeah.
00:02:17I think you captured it pretty well, John.
00:02:18That was one of the weirder games that I've ever watched, or at least recently bias is
00:02:22probably playing a factor here, but just from the jump, you saw them pretty much ignore
00:02:26drew holiday.
00:02:27Who is coming off of a really good three point shooting season has been solid and it kind
00:02:32of worked for them.
00:02:33It threw the Southerners out of whack.
00:02:34He attempted 26 shots, which is way more than he's attempted any game this season, you know,
00:02:40firing off from three.
00:02:41I don't think that they were bad looks, but also it just threw everything else out of
00:02:45whack.
00:02:46Like I said, in jail and attempting five shots with three quarters came alive in the fourth,
00:02:49but just a really bizarre really, really bizarre kind of turn of events.
00:02:54I do think the, the legs thing is, is a real thing.
00:02:58And I have to just say, I'm going to repeat myself here, seeing the chat saying no one's
00:03:02paid him out of town while I'm getting death threats from bucks fans all day, because yesterday
00:03:07I said Tatum was better than Giannis, but back on track here, Richard, I thought was
00:03:15the only one that really had legs and maybe it's because he didn't do much yesterday.
00:03:19Like he kind of was fresh.
00:03:21Yeah.
00:03:22It wasn't the legs.
00:03:23The elbow was fresh.
00:03:24He only took three shots yesterday.
00:03:25So, so this was ready to go, you know, and then the free throws down the stretch.
00:03:31I don't know what that is.
00:03:32We've seen from time to time where an NBA team just loses the ability to shoot free
00:03:36throws.
00:03:37It's pretty fascinating when you see how contagious it is.
00:03:40It was Pritchard.
00:03:41It was presingers.
00:03:42It was Cato.
00:03:43It was Jalen.
00:03:44It was guys that don't usually miss, but that really costs them down the stretch.
00:03:46They made five of their last 12 free throws.
00:03:48And so is that legs?
00:03:50Is that something else?
00:03:51I don't know.
00:03:52But that was a, that was an unusual thing for us to see from a Celtics team.
00:03:55That's very consistent from the free throw line.
00:03:57So those are the things that set out to be really bad Tatum game down the stretch.
00:04:00I thought that on both ends, he was struggling, made some bad defensive plays, you know, made
00:04:04some bad offensive plays coming off of a really phenomenal night last night.
00:04:08So, you know, was, was it legs tired?
00:04:11I think last night was an emotional game.
00:04:13It was a game that they all kind of overexerted themselves, but maybe they were just due for
00:04:17one of these.
00:04:18It is a good Memphis team.
00:04:19I don't think they're not good.
00:04:20They're impressive.
00:04:21I thought John Moran had one of the best individual performances of any opposing player.
00:04:25So again, the Celtics this year, so yeah, a lot, lots of, we can break down, but I really
00:04:29thought it started with leaving Drew Holiday wide open.
00:04:33It changed everything.
00:04:34It changed the game.
00:04:35It made it really weird because that's like, you know, that's the kind of thing that like
00:04:39I might've short circuited Joe in terms of like what, what, what he's telling him to
00:04:44do.
00:04:45And he said it in the post game, you know, we'll get some comments there too.
00:04:49But a short while ago, like fine, do that again.
00:04:51We like it.
00:04:52And that's fine.
00:04:53And again, Holiday shot 43% from three last year.
00:04:55Amazingly, he was left open in the corners or in the early part of the game where last
00:05:00year he was lethal, best, best corner three point shooter in the NBA last year.
00:05:05And he wasn't really taking advantage of it this year.
00:05:07I know he's down to 36% or at least I think was that entering this game.
00:05:11So yeah, he's not as consistent to three point shooter, but it's still a bit of a curious
00:05:17choice.
00:05:18And again, I guess it's a pick your poison with the Celtics team and that's what they
00:05:21decided they wanted them to do.
00:05:24And you know, you know that a Joe Missoula led team is not going to turn down open threes
00:05:30and he'd be mad if Holiday didn't shoot those, quite frankly, he's just has to make them.
00:05:36And you know, you saw Golden State do it with Jalen Brown and that led to like a 43 point
00:05:40beat down and one of the more impressive games last year.
00:05:43But the logic is sound.
00:05:46I'm going to pick the guy who I think I would rather shoot than everybody else.
00:05:52I'm going to try to take everybody else out of their flow and what they normally do and
00:05:55put it on him.
00:05:56And if he beats me, he beats me.
00:05:58And so I, I can understand it, but I, to this extent and to continue it all game long and
00:06:04for him to shoot that many times was really interesting because what do you do if you're
00:06:09Joe Missoula there?
00:06:10You see that it's happening.
00:06:12You see that it's not effective.
00:06:14Are you going to play like, no, would you keep playing the law of averages and say,
00:06:18man, if they give it to you, shoot it.
00:06:21And that's that?
00:06:22Or would you say, you know what, this is screwing up everything that we're trying to do here
00:06:25because nobody else is involved in our flow sucks.
00:06:28So maybe pass up the next couple and let's just keep it.
00:06:32Let's keep cycling until we get something else.
00:06:34Like what would you have done?
00:06:35Yeah.
00:06:36I mean, I think for the beginning portion, you want to, you want to shoot through it,
00:06:40especially because he's such a capable shooter.
00:06:42I mean, Jalen Brown had his famous game versus the Warriors last year due to a similar defense.
00:06:48Jalen Brown is a less consistent three-point shooter than Drew Holiday, but that made the
00:06:52Warriors look like fools.
00:06:53I mean, we all laughed about that game and everybody talked about, you know, why would
00:06:56you leave Jalen Brown open?
00:06:57So this is the flip side of that.
00:07:00I didn't because it was, he's statistically the worst three-point shooter on the team
00:07:05last year.
00:07:06If someone's going to shoot, I'd rather be him.
00:07:08Everyone else, Horford, Holiday last year, they're shooting in the forties.
00:07:12Like there wasn't, it's not the old Celtics.
00:07:15They basically did it.
00:07:16So it's ironic that it's on a Marcus Smart game.
00:07:19They did what teams used to do to the Celtics when Marcus Smart was on the team, which is
00:07:23I'm going to fool you into thinking you've got a good shot, but it's going to be that
00:07:27guy taking it.
00:07:28They just did it with Holiday and it worked.
00:07:30But this is the classic thing that would happen when Marcus was here.
00:07:32Marcus, by the way, had a very Marcus stat line, where again, he took the shot, the Celtics
00:07:38let him take open shots and he missed them as well.
00:07:40Just not 17 of them, but that's not supposed to work against this team.
00:07:44And it's not supposed to work with a shooter like Holiday.
00:07:47So again, it seems sound to allow him to shoot it, but you know, should Joe, should, should
00:07:53Joe like try something different?
00:07:57I don't think so.
00:07:58I'm just seeing him out of the corner.
00:07:59Yeah.
00:08:00Yeah.
00:08:01I'm seeing post game.
00:08:02Joe Mazzola called the Grizzlies decision to leave Drew Holiday open as bold and risky
00:08:04and said he's happy that the Celtics saw that so they can now learn from it.
00:08:08I thought that he didn't play down the stretch in fourth, the fourth quarter.
00:08:11We talked about this literally like days ago.
00:08:13This is a perfect, perfect example where Pritchard had a going.
00:08:15Pritchard was better.
00:08:16And he, he closed the game and Drew Holiday was on the bench and we, you know, we talked
00:08:19about whether or not they're comfortable that clearly now they are.
00:08:23But do you tell them to stop shooting?
00:08:24But that was the only way to stop it, right?
00:08:27It's like the only way to stop him from shooting open looks, which they want you to take is
00:08:31just to take them out of the game.
00:08:34And that's what he had to do down the stretch there.
00:08:36Yeah.
00:08:37But I think what's the quote that Joe gave a couple of weeks ago with the, you trust
00:08:41the process, not by feeling like this is, this is kind of an example of that.
00:08:46Like you're not going to, your principle, what's the principle, follow your principle,
00:08:50whatever, whatever it was.
00:08:51This is an example of them following the principle of shooting when you're open and shooting
00:08:55in rhythm and not, not doing that.
00:08:57The only thing is he did have some shots down the stretch where he was driving to the basket
00:09:00and kind of throwing some reckless, you know, drives against Jaron Jackson where I was like,
00:09:04okay, that's not even really, I almost felt like he was overcompensating a little bit
00:09:07for the fact that they were leaving him wide open.
00:09:10But that was the beginning of the problems.
00:09:11I don't want to put it all on that.
00:09:13That just set the tone, I think, for them.
00:09:14And if you're an opposing team, I understand why you're coming in with some gimmicky defense
00:09:19or trying something different than just being like, let's play our best defense with our
00:09:22personnel because ultimately, like, it's really hard to stop the Celtics team.
00:09:26And we've talked about how the math is not in your favor.
00:09:28And so what they did today changed their rhythm, changed their flow.
00:09:31And just the fact that we even have to have this conversation is, you know, it means that
00:09:35they did something different that was worth maybe throwing the Celtics out of whack.
00:09:40So yeah, that did stand out though.
00:09:42And it's clear for tonight at work, I don't think it would work in a seven-game series,
00:09:46especially when he's a little bit more rested.
00:09:48Like, he is dealing with something too, I'll add.
00:09:50Like we talked to him at shoot-around yesterday, he's dealing with the knee stuff.
00:09:53It's not something he's dealt with before.
00:09:54Like the second night of a back-to-back, he had a big night last night.
00:09:57Like it's going to be, I think, with off of rest, like maybe this wouldn't have happened
00:10:02too.
00:10:03Yeah.
00:10:04And it's a brutal stretch.
00:10:06Five out of seven.
00:10:07And you're looking at your veteran players here and you had a, I'm going to call it a
00:10:12Porzingis scare.
00:10:13I almost had a heart attack.
00:10:16The entire season flashed before my eyes because it's the same leg.
00:10:19And he was, he definitively just walked right to the locker room when it happened.
00:10:25And I mean, maybe I'm a doomer and I don't mean to be, but I just, I did not have him
00:10:33returning to the game and looking good in the second half and on my bingo card at all.
00:10:37I thought it was certainly out.
00:10:39And then us just holding our breath, waiting for test results coming back.
00:10:43Not to say they're not going to look at it.
00:10:44I thought that was bad.
00:10:46You know, you're obviously without Horford tonight and again, five out of seven.
00:10:50And Holiday.
00:10:51Yeah.
00:10:52Older.
00:10:53Tired legs.
00:10:54Everybody's tired.
00:10:55Tatum.
00:10:56Tatum looked like he didn't have fresh legs either.
00:10:57The whole team, I thought, looked like they were dragging.
00:11:00Definitely a bit sloppy with the ball.
00:11:02Trying to force the issue.
00:11:03I do think that, you know, Memphis has that size, uh, as well.
00:11:07So they're always going to contest you in the paint.
00:11:09And when they did try to force the issue a little bit, didn't always go the way that
00:11:13they, uh, they wanted it to go.
00:11:14So a difficult game throughout here.
00:11:16But again, I, I agree that the holiday thing is really, uh, really the story, but it's
00:11:22the second game in a row where the three point shot left them and they got it out that win
00:11:27yesterday.
00:11:28And I think that today would have been the same caliber of win of finding a way.
00:11:32Uh, they just didn't, they didn't have it.
00:11:33And if I'm going to really nitpick something and it's difficult because we're sitting here,
00:11:39I'm sitting here talking about the legs being an issue.
00:11:43I knew it.
00:11:44And I, and I, and I, and I, I put it out maybe on blue sky too.
00:11:47I was like, I, Joe's, I think Joe's waiting too long here to get Porzingis and Tatum in
00:11:52the game.
00:11:53I know he wanted to bring a minute, about the six minute mark.
00:11:56I know he needed them at that time to be fresh, but that's where the game went from.
00:12:00I believe it was, you know, uh, that was about a 10 Oh 10 Oh run there from that nine minute
00:12:07mark to the six minute mark where the Celtics were up three and they went down six or seven
00:12:11by the time Porzingis and Tatum checked in.
00:12:14And that, that I think was, I think it was one Oh three 99.
00:12:17And then it was one Oh nine one Oh three, uh, is, is where it was over that little stretch.
00:12:22And you could see it getting away from them.
00:12:24They weren't, they weren't getting good looks.
00:12:26They were getting cooked inside.
00:12:27He was trying to force that Kata Cornette double big lineup there for maybe just a little
00:12:33bit too long.
00:12:34Uh, and, and they did get burned, but who's to say if they brought the starters back in
00:12:39earlier that they would have had enough gas to be able to get them all the way to the
00:12:41finish line.
00:12:42And honestly, from what it looked like, they didn't have enough gas even with the rest
00:12:46of they did get, you know, right.
00:12:48That's why I'm saying I'm not going to make a big deal because they were, they looked
00:12:51exactly that.
00:12:52Yeah.
00:12:53And I think the reality was, cause when that lineup first came out in the fourth, I was
00:12:56like, in what world are it is the means Kata and Luke Cornette sharing the floor right
00:12:59now?
00:13:00Like, I was pretty shocked to see that, you know, two non-shooting guys that we really,
00:13:03we very rarely see together in such an important moment.
00:13:05But then I thought about it and it's like, they really didn't have many options because
00:13:09once Sam Houser went down, which again, we don't know much about that injury, but hopefully,
00:13:13hopefully it's not anything long-term, but he don't think he even came back to the bench
00:13:16in the second half.
00:13:17But once he came, he went down Al Horford's obviously not playing tonight.
00:13:20Two of your really important spacers, two of your really important rotation players
00:13:24that can do a little bit of everything.
00:13:26And you lost.
00:13:27Yeah.
00:13:28You lost them both.
00:13:29And they didn't want to go into Jordan Walsh or Drew Peterson or Baylor Shireman tonight.
00:13:33Like they, you know, Joe could have made that decision and he's made that decision in recent
00:13:37weeks.
00:13:38We saw last week, you know, Drew Peterson was getting 25 minutes a night for consecutive
00:13:40games and he opted to go with the double big lineup and maybe it would have been better
00:13:44off to just throw him one of the wings.
00:13:46But for some reason he didn't feel confident in doing that and doing so tonight.
00:13:49So that's really what it came down to.
00:13:51But he was, it was, you know, his hand was a little bit forced here because they were
00:13:54down Houser, which clearly wasn't the game plan.
00:13:57Yeah.
00:13:58Houser down with an adductor strain.
00:14:01That's like hip thigh sort of situation.
00:14:03Joe Mizzoula, not quite a, you know, a medical update, but when asked about it said after
00:14:10the game, Houser is doing all right.
00:14:14After exiting the games.
00:14:15Yeah.
00:14:16So, so, so that, so, so not that.
00:14:20Let me see.
00:14:21Marcus Smart might've tipped out before Bobby got a chance to talk to him or anyone got
00:14:27a chance to talk to him.
00:14:28I can kind of understand why and we'll get into Marcus Smart a little bit, but as we
00:14:34were talking about earlier, the story of the game was definitely holiday here, jacking
00:14:41away because that's what they let him do all game long.
00:14:43And we alluded to what Mizzoula you know, we paraphrased it a little bit, what he said
00:14:48about that.
00:14:49And then we had Joe talking about the Memphis Grizzlies decision to just kind of let holiday
00:14:53fire away.
00:14:54Yeah.
00:14:55And Drew, it's a bold strategy.
00:14:56I mean, he's an all-star shoots over 40% from three, I think that's a risky one.
00:15:02And Tony handled it great.
00:15:04I mean, we empowered him.
00:15:05We want him to shoot any shot that he's open.
00:15:07And I think that's a huge gift because now we may, we're going to see it again and it's
00:15:10going to be great for us.
00:15:11So I'm really happy that they did that for us.
00:15:14And the teammates did a great job empowering Drew to shoot, didn't make them all, but you
00:15:19know, you move on and, but I'm glad that we saw that and it's going to be good for us.
00:15:23Back to the strategy on Drew, just, you know, I know you're about empowering guys and making
00:15:27sure that they get good shots, but at one point you have your finger on the pulse, you
00:15:31know, you know, when guys are doing well, not doing well.
00:15:35What point do you start considering adjustments on that?
00:15:39We made an adjustment.
00:15:41I'm just saying at one point, like when you start, I'm just saying for you philosophically,
00:15:46I'm not saying you didn't make any adjustments, I'm saying we made the adjustment, the adjustment
00:15:50was keep shooting.
00:15:51And then Peyton had a good third quarter and then the most important thing is having an
00:15:58understanding that we want Drew to shoot every time he's open.
00:16:01We want him to be an aggressive player and I'm really grateful that they did that on
00:16:05us tonight so that we have it and we can get better.
00:16:09Double big, Nemi and Luke hadn't seen that before.
00:16:13What kind of led you to go to that?
00:16:14And I know it got you back in the game, but, you know, they went on a 10-0 run after that.
00:16:18What kind of happened in the second half of that run?
00:16:20Al was out and Sam got hurt.
00:16:22You know, those two specifically, what do you kind of see out of them there that, you
00:16:28know, made you think they could get you back in there?
00:16:32We had four offensive rebounds, I think, in the first half and then ended up with 15.
00:16:35So I think they gave us a little bit more, just, you know, with the volume of our shooting,
00:16:40they gave us a little bit more of a crash rate in the second half, gave us some second
00:16:42chance opportunities.
00:16:43I thought they played, you know, physical on both ends of the floor and it forced them
00:16:46to change their matchups on us.
00:16:51I didn't miss much in postgame.
00:16:53Nope.
00:16:54Joe Mizzoula, I did everything right.
00:16:57Screw everyone.
00:16:59And look, Joe's competitive as hell and that's, you know, there's defiance there.
00:17:03Yeah.
00:17:04That's the strategy.
00:17:05I hope to see it again.
00:17:06Like, I dare you to do that again.
00:17:08But you know, at the same time, when he's asked that adjustment question, he didn't
00:17:13want to say it because it would have been a shitty thing to do, but he's like, we made
00:17:16an adjustment and the adjustment is I sat his ass down, but it would have been a crappy
00:17:21thing to say.
00:17:22So he pulled back a little.
00:17:23He said the adjustment was to let him keep shooting and then Pritchard went in the game,
00:17:27but he did make an adjustment.
00:17:28His adjustment is he sat him down.
00:17:30Like Drew, let's, let's call it a night, buddy.
00:17:34It's over here.
00:17:35You don't have to do Bobby dirty like that.
00:17:37There's, there's nothing, there's nothing he did wrong, but again, it's that's, we just
00:17:44talked about it.
00:17:45That was the stretch right there.
00:17:46That 10-0 run where Memphis took the game back over and never looked back.
00:17:50That was it.
00:17:51So it was working for you.
00:17:53Joe might've been a little bit late to see it, or might've said, I just can't bring these
00:17:57other guys in because they're dog tired.
00:18:00You never really know.
00:18:01And there's no way it's like baseball, Noah.
00:18:03You don't know if you brought in the relief pitcher or you left in your starter, if the
00:18:07result would have necessarily been any different.
00:18:09But when you see it in hindsight, it's pretty easy to say that 10-0 run was where you lost
00:18:13the game there.
00:18:14Yeah.
00:18:15Definitely.
00:18:16And, and I think, yeah, that was an interesting press conference snippet.
00:18:21I'm sure there was more, but that's exactly what I would expect from Joe after this kind
00:18:25of a loss.
00:18:26He's not going to start commiserating with us or ranting about the players or, yeah.
00:18:31But that, you know, those are the two things that stood out from, we were going to attribute
00:18:34like why they lost this game was, you know, Drew, the whole Drew Holliday defensive scheme.
00:18:38And then that fourth quarter lineup was tough.
00:18:41And then honestly, like not to, not to go too in on the coaching staff, because I think
00:18:44they have done a really good job with challenges and things, but they were down by four with,
00:18:48what was it, 19 seconds to go.
00:18:50And then they actually had a chance to get the ball.
00:18:53And then because he called the timeout, they were able to challenge that, that Memphis
00:18:56was able to actually look at that out of bounds call and challenge that play.
00:18:59Very unusual mistake for the public to make.
00:19:01I think they pride themselves and kind of thinking through all those scenarios and calling
00:19:05a timeout when they need to, we're not challenging something when they don't want to.
00:19:07So that was a little bit unusual because when he called it, I was thinking to myself, like
00:19:10I'm surprised I didn't just end on the ball right away because, and then you can call
00:19:13a timeout, but call it while it was on the dead ball.
00:19:15So again, they were down by four, so it wasn't like they were down by one, but it wasn't
00:19:19a one position game.
00:19:20So it's not a huge deal, but it was just, I was almost like, I feel like the coaching
00:19:24staff is tired from yesterday.
00:19:25Like, you know, it seems like everybody was on a second night of a back to back because
00:19:28that was just unusual to see, to make that decision as well.
00:19:31So yeah, that was, it was a little bit of an underwhelming game, honestly.
00:19:35There was a lot of juice around the Marcus Marge return and he was kind of a non-factor.
00:19:40He didn't even have like quintessential moments.
00:19:42We were talking yesterday, like, is he going to be diving into people and things?
00:19:46He had one flop.
00:19:47Like I was like, okay, we saw like a glimpse of Marcus Marge, one flop on Tatum driving.
00:19:52But other than that, it was really, he was invisible, I thought, well, worse than invisible.
00:19:57Yeah, the, um, the, uh, he was, and I thought, and there was one time where he, uh, he deed
00:20:04up Tatum, um, and, and he did lock him up a little bit on one possession.
00:20:09Um, that might be the only other thing that kind of stands out.
00:20:12But I also thought when he entered the fourth quarter, one for 10, one for five, uh, there
00:20:17were three points total, the, the, a classic quintessential Marcus Smart game.
00:20:22That's what his line looks like entering the fourth quarter.
00:20:25And then he hits five threes and makes three diving plays or two winning plays or whatever
00:20:28that is and does something.
00:20:30So I thought something was coming, but legit, nothing was coming.
00:20:34And if I'm to believe, uh, what we're hearing from the garden, he got out of there fast.
00:20:38Um, you know, and he didn't want to talk, but we did talk to him earlier.
00:20:43We're going to play a snippet of that, uh, too, and that he's still not super happy with
00:20:50the trade situation.
00:20:51He was pretty open about it today.
00:20:52I'm talking to Bobby Manning who was at, uh, Memphis grizzly shoot around.
00:20:56So we will, uh, get into that as well.
00:20:59And we'll, uh, you know, keep fielding your comments here in the chat and respond to stuff.

00:23:43I know, I know, but you know, I'm flying black, you know, it's hard to produce and, and, and
00:23:49host at the same time.
00:23:51You know, I, nobody wants to hear me complain about it, but it's a lot, it's a lot Noah.
00:23:55I, you know, I'm not on my game.
00:23:58It's not missing 17 threes.
00:23:59I didn't do that.
00:24:01But anyway, so there it is joinedbuilt.com slash garden and Noah's right.
00:24:05Second night of a back-to-back is tough for everybody.
00:24:07As far as the Marcus smart experience goes, I hate shoveling dirt on, on top of the Marcus
00:24:12smart thing, but I have a hard time having a conversation about Marcus smart without
00:24:17having the same conversation I've always had about Marcus smart, which is there's a reason
00:24:22you see stat lines like this from him is he's an inefficient score and he always has been.
00:24:28And I think that that was always one of the hangups Celtics fans had is sometimes there
00:24:34was just too much Marcus.
00:24:35And and sometimes you'd have nights like this mixed in with nights where he did literally
00:24:40a little bit of everything and was your heart and soul and best player on the floor.
00:24:44But I do feel bad for the situation that he's in coming back in here.
00:24:47And I feel bad for him being shipped out of town and then winning a championship after
00:24:52he'd spent all of this time here.
00:24:55And earlier today, I know you know, there was a lot of interest and a bunch of Celtics
00:24:59reporters went to shoot around.
00:25:01Did you go to shoot around as well today?
00:25:02I wasn't a shooter.
00:25:03I know.
00:25:04No.
00:25:05And he did talk about how the trade went down.
00:25:07And he's kind of, you know, echoed some of the things he's said before, but he's still
00:25:11definitely thinking about it.
00:25:12Hold on.
00:25:13I'm trying to put on stage.
00:25:16I mean, I still look at it the way that I looked at it when it happened, you know, it's
00:25:24great trade, you know, business wise, just wish, you know, would have went about it a
00:25:29little bit differently.
00:25:30Just letting me know.
00:25:31That way I wasn't just, you know, barnsided and I could have prepared for it and got my
00:25:35family ready.
00:25:36But like I said, business wise, it's a great business move.
00:25:40I would have made the move.
00:25:41And I think anybody probably would have.
00:25:43So you know, you tip the cap off to those guys, you know, I'm very happy for them.
00:25:46You know, I'm proud that they were able to go and, you know, win it.
00:25:49Like I said before, I've been on the court with those guys.
00:25:51I put the work in with those guys.
00:25:53So I know what they sacrificed and I'm proud to see those guys finally, you know, getting
00:25:57what they deserve and, you know, the hard work they put in.
00:26:02So again, not big mad, but he seems sad.
00:26:06He's not, he's not mad, but he seems a little sad, right?
00:26:09Yeah.
00:26:10I mean, I think it's fair to be honest about something like that.
00:26:14Like it's never going to, the pain's never going to go away.
00:26:16You were with this team for years and then you get traded and then they win a championship.
00:26:20Like I would be, I would be salty about it for the rest of my life.
00:26:22I'd be thinking about it in my eighties.
00:26:23Like I'm sad that that happened and especially the way that it did.
00:26:26The reality is this is how NBA trades literally always are.
00:26:29Like nobody really ever gets a heads up.
00:26:32You occasionally need to get a few minutes, but that's what you just hear from around
00:26:35the league through holiday that, you know, that's just the way the stories go.
00:26:38But it is, I totally understand why somebody would feel salty about it.
00:26:41I saw him talking to like Mike Zarin, the assistant general manager, all the South extreme
00:26:44personnel before the game.
00:26:46And I don't think he's carrying like outward hard feelings, but yeah, that didn't surprise
00:26:51me that he was holding that, that view.
00:26:54Whereas like Malcolm Brogdon just kind of, when he was asked about it by Bobby earlier
00:26:57this season, he was just ready to, he really didn't have any hard feelings about it at
00:27:01all anymore.
00:27:02And that makes sense considering the circumstances.
00:27:04Yeah.
00:27:05And that's the thing again, I think is a perfectly well reasoned answer and and no, no problem
00:27:13with, you know, players feeling the way that they feel, of course you'd like the heads
00:27:17up because it's a courtesy, but it's impossible to do it because when these trades don't go
00:27:22down or if you are shopping somebody, you can't tell them you're shopping them because
00:27:25that's going to affect your relationship forever.
00:27:27So the teams are really hamstrung there.
00:27:30Look at the Jalen Brown situation from a couple of years ago when he was clearly bothered
00:27:34and there was a question of whether he's on the move and he does a couple of national
00:27:38magazine interviews and talking about airing his grievances and calling up Brad and say,
00:27:43what the hell's going on here?
00:27:45So like, that's not something you want out there, you know, it's not something you want
00:27:49to communicate to players because you risk losing them.
00:27:52If they know you're constantly shopping them for something better, that's, that's going
00:27:56to affect how they view the organization, particularly a player like Jalen who was about
00:27:59to re-sign here.
00:28:00So it's just not something that's in the cards, but it is what it is.
00:28:04We're going to bring Bobby on in a minute, but we're going to go back to the Drew Holiday
00:28:07thing, because we did get a chance to talk about him and again, really weird game for
00:28:13those who didn't see all of it.
00:28:16The Grizzlies decided to leave Drew Holiday all alone and he didn't not make the most
00:28:23of his opportunities.
00:28:24Eight for 26 field goals, four for 17, three pointers.
00:28:28And he got benched in the fourth quarter because he just simply wasn't effective.
00:28:32He wasn't great defensively either.
00:28:33And that's another, that's a separate question altogether.
00:28:36But Missoula said, Hey, bring it on.
00:28:38Here's Holiday talking about how things went for him.
00:28:41Did you catch off guard that they were going to let you shoot?
00:28:43It didn't catch me off guard.
00:28:44I felt like every team lets me shoot, even yesterday.
00:28:48Obviously you got Jason and Jalen, they were getting to the paint, usually the recipient
00:28:55of that.
00:28:56But tonight someone went in, someone didn't.
00:28:58That was the most shots you've ever taken in the first half.
00:29:02How different did that feel compared to your role most nights?
00:29:05A little different, but you got to keep on shooting them.
00:29:08I'm too wide open not to.
00:29:11Honestly, I kind of liked it.
00:29:15It's been a while since I've been shooting that much.
00:29:18Just got to see one going and two going and then from there, you know, the floodgates
00:29:22will happen, but I'll continue to shoot.
00:29:24Did it take you kind of a minute to adjust to that, the way that they were playing you?
00:29:28Nah, I saw it right away.
00:29:29I mean, Jaren Jackson was all the way in the paint and leaving my wide open.
00:29:34But every shot to me felt good.
00:29:36I mean, just sometimes you got to see it going.
00:29:39You broke your career high in threes early in the third quarter.
00:29:43You took 14, like your career high was 13 previous.
00:29:47Did you notice, like, damn, I'm shooting a lot?
00:29:49Because you don't count your stats, but you got to notice, like, hey, I'm getting them up.
00:29:54I mean, yeah, I'm getting them up.
00:29:56They're literally dropping all the way in the paint and I'm wide open.
00:30:00So, yeah, I knew I was shooting.
00:30:02But again, I don't see it as an issue.
00:30:06Some games you shoot it well, some games you don't.
00:30:08Today wasn't the best day for me, but I'll keep shooting.
00:30:13So we'll bring in Bobby Manning.
00:30:15And, guys, while I don't think Drew Holliday shooting open threes is an issue,
00:30:20because I think you trust him to do that, I'm going to ask you whether this is an issue.
00:30:25Celtics are 13th in the league in three-point percentage this year.
00:30:28They're still number one by a considerable margin in makes,
00:30:33which is, I think, over 19 makes per game.
00:30:37But the Celtics after tonight fall to 13th in the league.
00:30:40And if you eliminate game one, they're going to be a good bit lower there, too.
00:30:44So outside of the first game of the season, they've been a dead mid three-point shooting team percentage-wise.
00:30:52Of course, at the volume they're shooting at, they're still effective.
00:30:55But that's different than last year where they shot it at a much more efficient clip.
00:31:01At what point are you concerned about that number?
00:31:06I'm not totally concerned given the success they've had to this point.
00:31:11And, yeah, just yesterday they moved to 6-0 and they shoot below 33 percent from three.
00:31:16Which is amazing. Yeah.
00:31:18Which also kind of might tell you they don't necessarily need to at the insane volume that they are.
00:31:24I'm not trying to go Gary Washburn here.
00:31:26I'm just wondering, is it possible it's gone a shade too far to the point that they're taking themselves out of other things they do?
00:31:34Because I didn't love how they got a lot of their threes early.
00:31:37This felt like the second night of a back-to-back.
00:31:40I'm going to jack the first open shot I see, whether or not, you know, without earning it.
00:31:45You know, they weren't getting paint touches.
00:31:47They were just kind of bombs away, which isn't always the case.
00:31:52But, yeah, it's a lot. It's a lot.
00:31:56Yeah, and a lot changes about your team.
00:31:58I'm sure you talked about the impact in O'Horford in this game and how it's going out.
00:32:03It's astonishing.
00:32:04We talked about it a lot this week.
00:32:06How when he's good and he's there, it's one thing.
00:32:09And when he's not, it's a totally different thing.
00:32:11And then to be missing both of them in this situation completely threw them off to the point where I thought that was one of Joe's worst decisions of the year.
00:32:19Putting the two bigs out there together.
00:32:21I don't know why they did that.
00:32:23You tried to ask it.
00:32:25Yeah, I worked at first, but it fell apart quickly.
00:32:28You're doing the Lord's work, Bobby.
00:32:29I'll tell you that.
00:32:30You keep doing it.
00:32:32It fell apart quickly, right?
00:32:33They gave up a 10-0 run.
00:32:35Jackson's attacking those guys offensively.
00:32:37I mean, I get it's a desperate situation and guys are going out and all that.
00:32:42But it was weird even for Joe to go in that direction.
00:32:45Because if you're going to be relying on spacing and threes and all that, I know there's other ways to space.
00:32:50But it's not a look you have in your arsenal, right?
00:32:54So they tried something outside the box there.
00:32:57It worked at first.
00:32:58It fell apart.
00:32:59It's not a huge deal.
00:33:00This loss at the end of the day isn't a ginormous deal.
00:33:03But it does raise some good questions, John, like you said, about the amount of threes they're taking to start this year.
00:33:09I don't know if they expected it to go in this direction, but it did.
00:33:13So from this point on, do you change your shot profile a little bit?
00:33:17We're still relatively early in Porzingis' return.
00:33:20Does he start to get you more looks closer to the basket?
00:33:22And, of course, Jalen in this game tried to generate those.
00:33:26He just said moments ago he was out of control in this one.
00:33:29And that was another reason that they were just off-kilter in this game.
00:33:33They had to play a different way in this game than they're used to in a number of different ways.
00:33:39And it just seemed to throw everybody for a loop.
00:33:42And I'll credit them for staying in the game.
00:33:44And that's something Jalen said, too, like fifth game in seven days, schedule being wacky this week.
00:33:49They were right there in the end against a great team.
00:33:52We talked about it.
00:33:53Memphis is one of those small handful of teams that could win it all this year.
00:33:57But they just ended up falling short late.
00:33:59And a few mistakes in some key spots ended up costing them this one.
00:34:03Because they did have, what, a six-point lead at one point in the fourth?
00:34:07They had a lead of some amount early in the quarter and then squandered it pretty quickly.
00:34:12So the Grizzlies played amazing in this game.
00:34:14The game plan was great.
00:34:15The performances across the board, the rotations.
00:34:18It was all stellar.
00:34:19That was really impressive to watch.
00:34:21Yeah, especially like some of the shot-making late, particularly Jaron Jackson,
00:34:25who just kept taking it to him.
00:34:27And even when they started forcing him to his right, I know he's more comfortable going left.
00:34:31He was still hitting those.
00:34:32I think he hit, like, four floaters in the fourth quarter or whatever.
00:34:35So it was pretty impressive there where they executed.
00:34:39The Celtics did not on this half.
00:34:41Yeah, and he hit one over Brown, hit one over Porzingis, hit one over White.
00:34:44Everybody.
00:34:45Everybody.
00:34:46And the lead, I believe, got to four.
00:34:48And it was that 10-0 run there, Bobby, where it got away from them.
00:34:52And I said it earlier to Noah, too.
00:34:54I could feel it.
00:34:55Like, I was like, he's waiting.
00:34:58He's trying to hold off as long as possible.
00:35:01But I think Joe's waiting a little too long to pull the plug on that lineup
00:35:05and get Tatum and Porzingis in there.
00:35:07And 10-0 run.
00:35:09Boom.
00:35:10They go from up four to down six.
00:35:13And that was kind of, they were battling the rest of the way.
00:35:15And they still had shots.
00:35:17They had looks.
00:35:18They had opportunities.
00:35:19Like, it was still there.
00:35:20They were fighting for real.
00:35:21Like, this wasn't a, you know, throw your hands up and give up.
00:35:24It was just a sloppy mess of a game.
00:35:26But they were fighting the whole way.
00:35:28Wow.
00:35:30Yeah, that's something else.
00:35:33And, you know, not to pull a Joe here, but I will flip it.
00:35:36They've allowed a lot of threes recently in terms of percentage, right?
00:35:40They're not giving up a ton of attempts to their opposing teams,
00:35:42but their opponents are starting to hit a lot of threes against them.
00:35:45You know, like the Dresdens did the other night.
00:35:47In this game, the Grizzlies were able to shoot 45%.
00:35:50Again, they shot, like, almost half as many as the Celtics here,
00:35:53but they took advantage of all of them.
00:35:55And, you know, Ja going a little crazy after coming in, what, 26%,
00:35:5827% for the season was a big part of this.
00:36:01Bain hit a couple.
00:36:03Jackson, of course, had a huge one in the fourth.
00:36:05And these aren't great three-point shooters, Bain aside.
00:36:08So, this was a weird game.
00:36:11Not to just throw it out.
00:36:13The Grizzlies did some amazing stuff here and were prepared
00:36:16and had a great game plan.
00:36:18But this was weird.
00:36:19And I do think the three-point shooting going against them,
00:36:21we always talk about that, John, right?
00:36:23Like, you know, your defense gets hit by, like,
00:36:25some uncharacteristic three-point shooting,
00:36:27and that can swing your defense a little bit.
00:36:29I do think that's happened over the last couple of games here to some degree.
00:36:33But that's come in tandem with them going cold
00:36:36in a couple of different situations.
00:36:38Second quarter yesterday, they overcame that.
00:36:40This game, right from the jump.
00:36:42And the first quarter, I felt like, is where they got in trouble
00:36:45just jacking too many.
00:36:46And they got away from that a little bit midway through the game, right?
00:36:49Going inside more.
00:36:50Tatum, I think.
00:36:51You can tell.
00:36:52There was one timeout.
00:36:53And then they came back out there.
00:36:55And then the next three possessions went into the paint.
00:36:57So, I think Joe was like, guys, come on.
00:36:59Like, you got to work for it.
00:37:01You almost wonder sometimes, like, do you have to play it like when you're
00:37:05coaching a youth team where you're like – I'm coaching, like,
00:37:0910-year-olds or 12-year-olds.
00:37:10You got to pass three times before somebody shoots.
00:37:12Like, in some cases, you wonder.
00:37:14It's like, you got to get a paint touch before the first three goes up.
00:37:17You know, like, just make sure we're going through our process
00:37:20as opposed to just – because I think they got away from them
00:37:23a little bit tonight.
00:37:24But you have to re-watch and see.
00:37:26But it did feel like a lot of those, particularly in the first quarter,
00:37:29were just launching them.
00:37:31Yeah, and that's the Drew thing.
00:37:33We can go back to that because it is such a big deal here.
00:37:37I know Joe's excited about it, and I get it, right?
00:37:39He's a good three-point shooter, and if you're going to give him those
00:37:41in droves, it's like the Jalen thing last year, and this game could have
00:37:44gone in that direction if, you know, you hit a bunch of them.
00:37:48It is intriguing, right?
00:37:49Teams are going to watch that.
00:37:51People are going to look up around the league and be like, ooh,
00:37:54should we try this too?
00:37:55And it's going to happen over and over again.
00:37:57If you look at the lineup – and, again, so Holiday, for what it's worth,
00:38:01you know, statistically, he's been at around 40% for the last three,
00:38:04four seasons.
00:38:05So it's not something where, oh, he flashed one year.
00:38:10But he's down to 34% after tonight's game.
00:38:13Jalen Brown has been, you know, in the low 30s all year long.
00:38:17Again, you're talking about picking your poison and how would you defend
00:38:20the Celtics.
00:38:21We've said, no, maybe they should just leave Tatum, let him play one-on-one,
00:38:26don't help there, and then just see if you can force him into some contested
00:38:30shots as opposed to helping off and getting in rotation.
00:38:33Maybe this is another way you're looking at the Celtics.
00:38:36And I think some teams are looking for different hacks here.
00:38:38I'll give Jalen and Drew every shot they want.
00:38:42And if they beat me, they beat me.
00:38:43But I'll give them every three-pointer they want.
00:38:45I'm not going to let anybody else do it.
00:38:48Maybe that's a direction that some teams decide to go.
00:38:51But I'm not sure.
00:38:52I'm not sure if it gets repeated.
00:38:54But I think other teams will try it.
00:38:57Other teams will definitely try it because they need something.
00:39:00But I also thought that Drew made a good point post-game in that he's
00:39:03oftentimes left open.
00:39:05This was extreme.
00:39:06But he's also like his whole – the reason why he's worked so well on the
00:39:10Celtics team is that he's hit those open shots.
00:39:12And I do think Water will find his level.
00:39:14I don't think he's going to finish the year shooting 34% from three as he is
00:39:17currently shooting.
00:39:19There's a big enough sample there that we know that.
00:39:21And we also know that he's been dealing with – he's been dealing with
00:39:24something that I think has hampered him a little bit.
00:39:26But I would feel comfortable with a team leaving him open the way that
00:39:29Memphis did tonight for a larger stretch.
00:39:31Because ultimately, he shot below average.
00:39:34He makes a couple more of those shots.
00:39:36It's an okay stat line.
00:39:37And also, just to be fair to him, what did he finish?
00:39:41Eight of 26.
00:39:42We've seen Jalen and Jason have that stat line many times.
00:39:45I think it was just unusual to see him be the one to throw that up.
00:39:48But it is just – that's just the reality of being a basketball player
00:39:52sometimes too.
00:39:54Jalen, honestly, he's been a much less consistently pointed over the last
00:39:56few years.
00:39:57So, when the Warriors did it, had that worked, maybe that would have
00:40:00started something.
00:40:01But because it burned them so bad, I don't think anybody wanted to copy it.
00:40:04Yeah, again, even back then, Noah, I said it was sound.
00:40:07Like, they weren't wrong.
00:40:09And everyone's like, that was so stupid.
00:40:11And I don't think so.
00:40:12It was a sound strategy.
00:40:14It just didn't work.
00:40:15You have to do it to someone, right?
00:40:17And it's been Horford most of the time.
00:40:19So, usually he's wide open out there.
00:40:21Tatum's kicking and popping to him.
00:40:24Maybe it just happened to Drew tonight by coincidence with Horford being out.
00:40:27They had a playoff someone, and he ended up being the guy in this one.
00:40:30So, you know, looking at the numbers for the season, Horford does lead them
00:40:34in wide open threes.
00:40:35And he's shooting 42 on them.
00:40:38Pritchard's gone a ton.
00:40:39We've talked about teams curiously leaving him open in spots.
00:40:42And he's 39.
00:40:43White's 39.
00:40:44And then Drew, who's, you know, shooting two a game, is down at 36 after
00:40:48tonight.
00:40:49Those are on the wide open ones.
00:40:50We go to open, and, you know, it's Tatum generating a bunch for himself.
00:40:55White getting a bunch.
00:40:56And, you know, Holiday taking two a game, 35%.
00:41:00So, you look at the numbers, he's like 35, 36% on open threes this year.
00:41:06And I don't know if the Grizzlies pulled that up and said,
00:41:09oh, maybe we should try this.
00:41:10Or, you know, it's only four attempts a game that he's getting from that spot.
00:41:13So, you know, I don't agree that he's shooting a ton of wide open threes
00:41:16every night.
00:41:17He's not getting many shots.
00:41:18And I think, like, more important than putting the ball into his hands and
00:41:23making him shoot those, you just generally make him do a lot in this game.
00:41:27Right?
00:41:28He's not a guy, like, it kind of blew my mind.
00:41:30You look up in this game, and it's like, oh, he's shooting all these shots.
00:41:33He's, you know, in all these actions defensively.
00:41:35Because more often than not, he hasn't had to do a ton.
00:41:38Like, this game where he just shoots like six, seven, eight shots.
00:41:42And, you know, he'll hit two, three, four of them.
00:41:44And it's like, oh, you know, he did his job tonight.
00:41:46To have him up at 18 shots at halftime was mind-blowing.
00:41:52And all of a sudden, you're, like, pulling up the numbers, and you're like,
00:41:54oh, is Drew shooting as well this year?
00:41:56Because, you know, normally you're just not thinking too much about him.
00:41:59You're just like, he's doing his job.
00:42:01He's over there.
00:42:02You know, he doesn't have to do a ton on this team.
00:42:04And it's amazing.
00:42:05Right?
00:42:06That's all we've said, even in our conversations earlier this week.
00:42:09And all of a sudden, for him to be, like, a focal point offensively,
00:42:12and he's generating shots, and it's just massive volume.
00:42:15And like Noah said, maybe dealing with some stuff,
00:42:17maybe a little fatigued with the minutes or whatever it is,
00:42:20it just put them in a different spot.
00:42:22Because that hasn't been his job on the Celtics.
00:42:24Right?
00:42:25His job's been the defensive quarterback, shoot here or there,
00:42:28sneak in because no one's noticing you on offensive rebound.
00:42:31But in this game, he had to take a ton of shots.
00:42:33He had to do a lot of work on defense, too.
00:42:35And it was just different.
00:42:37Right?
00:42:38It just felt like it made them all a little bit more uncomfortable.
00:42:41Yeah.
00:42:42Bobby, you were in there for Jalen's postgame?
00:42:44Yep.
00:42:46Did he explain at all what his mindset was,
00:42:49kind of with the five shot attempts through three quarters?
00:42:51And then, obviously, he was, like, a lot more aggressive in the fourth.
00:42:53Because that was also bizarre.
00:42:55It almost felt like new holiday shot attempts were coming.
00:42:57Or not, like, necessarily it was.
00:42:59But Jalen really wasn't involved offensively.
00:43:01He turned the ball over a couple times, but he really wasn't doing anything.
00:43:05And it felt like they really could have used him.
00:43:07So, I'm curious if he kind of spoke on that at all.
00:43:10Yeah, he got asked about that.
00:43:12And he said, you know, it's not going to be predetermined shot amounts.
00:43:15You're just playing basketball and getting it to that guy
00:43:17who's open over and over again.
00:43:19So, yeah, I think that came directly as a consequence
00:43:21of holiday shot total in this game.
00:43:25And, you know, that's part of the thinking, John.
00:43:27Right?
00:43:28You're shifting shots away from those guys to holiday.
00:43:30I got him.
00:43:31Let's hear from Jalen.
00:43:32We have some postgame commentary here from Brown
00:43:35on kind of Celtic's, you know, uneven effort.
00:43:38It's a tough game.
00:43:40And a back-to-back, you know, give credit to Memphis.
00:43:43They pressured us.
00:43:45They were physical.
00:43:47And the refs let it go.
00:43:48So, you know, credit to Memphis.
00:43:50We didn't – we wasn't strong enough with the basketball.
00:43:53I wasn't.
00:43:54I was way too casual, you know.
00:43:56And that's my fault.
00:43:58Too many turnovers.
00:44:00We got to be better than that.
00:44:01But I give credit to Memphis.
00:44:03You know, like I said, they knew that we played last night.
00:44:06And they just upped the pressure.
00:44:08And we didn't meet the level that we needed.
00:44:12Yeah, probably.
00:44:13Teams will probably try.
00:44:15And I hope so.
00:44:16We got full belief in Drew, you know, tonight.
00:44:20Maybe he didn't shoot the ball as much as he liked.
00:44:22But, you know, we got full belief in Drew and any of those guys.
00:44:26And we want to encourage it.
00:44:29So, yeah, we'll be ready if teams do decide that.
00:44:33Yeah, I want to shoot.
00:44:34But also, I'm not getting as many shots as I should.
00:44:37Yeah, it's basketball.
00:44:39I mean, it's no determinants of how many shots I should shoot going into every night.
00:44:43You know, obviously I like to be involved in all the actions and stuff like that.
00:44:47But, you know, on a team like this, you know, I don't mind being a distributor
00:44:53and setting guys up, you know.
00:44:55And I feel like I did that a lot.
00:44:57I just was too sloppy with the basketball tonight, which was not good.
00:45:04I'll clean that up.
00:45:08So there's Jalen Brown.
00:45:10You know, some of the stuff that you just alluded to, Bobby,
00:45:13Noah asked you about, and then just some other things.
00:45:15And I think that that's a very, very strong assessment.
00:45:17What a weird night by Jalen Brown.
00:45:19He looked out of sync.
00:45:20He wasn't shooting early.
00:45:21Sloppy as hell, just turning the ball over
00:45:23and then just starts making ridiculously difficult shots.
00:45:27You know, contested fallaways, three-pointers when other people weren't hitting.
00:45:33And ended up with an insanely efficient offensive night,
00:45:3610 of 14 field goals to go with that.
00:45:39He's got the five turnovers.
00:45:40So, again, what Noah and I were talking about off the top of the show,
00:45:43just a bizarre game all around with everything that we saw there.
00:45:48We'll talk a little bit more about it.
00:45:49And, Bobby, we did talk Marcus as well.
00:45:51But, you know, you were there.
00:45:52I'll give you a chance to discuss what you saw from him.

00:47:55Bobby, we talked about Marcus.
00:47:57We played the sound that you got earlier.
00:47:59We were predicting there would be something.
00:48:02We were kind of all excited yesterday talking about it.
00:48:04Like, let's see what Marcus does.
00:48:06Let's see the reception.
00:48:07Let's see him make some Marcus Smart plays.
00:48:09Let's see if he mixes it up with any of the Celtics.
00:48:11And we just got a sad Marcus press conference before the game
00:48:16and a sad Marcus effort during the game and not much else.
00:48:21Yeah, I couldn't believe how quickly the story of this game
00:48:26just dove beneath the surface and disappeared.
00:48:29He had that six-minute stretch, goes 0 at 5,
00:48:32and then it felt like they just stashed him away
00:48:38for pretty much the rest of the game.
00:48:39Like, they didn't want him too involved or on the floor all that much
00:48:42the rest of the way, and I understand it.
00:48:44You know, Jake LaRavia gave them some great minutes at the wing there.
00:48:47And Pippen, I think, has been a revelation for them
00:48:49in a backup point guard role and had a go-ahead shot
00:48:52in this game in the fourth quarter.
00:48:54So for this to have that eruption early and all these fireworks around it
00:49:00and you're thinking it's going to be one of those revenge games
00:49:02and then it to turn into this, it was disappointing.
00:49:05And emblematic of some shooting to start this year, definitely.
00:49:10He's moved to the bench now.
00:49:12This is his ninth game in a row coming off the bench.
00:49:14So you wonder how involved he's going to be the rest of the way there
00:49:18given that they have some other guys and they like that starting lineup now
00:49:21with the rookie there, Wells.
00:49:23So it was disappointing, definitely.
00:49:25But even during that opening stretch where they gave him a little leeway,
00:49:28he had the ball in his hands a little bit, tried to go at Tatum on that shot,
00:49:32didn't work, didn't get any good looks from there,
00:49:35Cato blocked him, and all of a sudden he was just out of the mix.
00:49:38And was there even a smart play in this game?
00:49:41I don't think so.
00:49:44There was the one play where Tatum was dribbling up the floor
00:49:49and kind of used his arm as he tends to,
00:49:52and then Marcus dove on the ground and slid five feet.
00:49:56That was the only time that I remembered that Marcus was really in the game
00:50:00because I thought there was going to be fouls and dives.
00:50:03We were talking yesterday like,
00:50:05is there going to be some crazy play that we're discussing?
00:50:07There was none of that.
00:50:10He defended Porzingis a couple of times too,
00:50:14which threw back to that Knicks game way back when, when he did that.
00:50:18I thought he had some similar success there.
00:50:20But again, just completely underwhelming
00:50:23in terms of that being a storyline here, John.
00:50:25There's really not even much to talk about.
00:50:27He didn't talk after the game either, just kind of got right up out of here.
00:50:30They'll see them again.
00:50:33Who knows? Maybe you see them in June.
00:50:35I think that's certainly in play here, given how good they look.
00:50:38But definitely wasn't a big story tonight.
00:50:43Muted.
00:50:45What could have been a huge story,
00:50:47Chris Tapp's Porzingis leaving early in the first half.
00:50:50While it looked like he aggravated the same foot or ankle,
00:50:53he had really rare surgery off of a really rare injury,
00:50:58which nobody knew what he would look like coming back
00:51:01or even if he would heal or how that was going to go.
00:51:04And then he hurts it and everybody gasps and stops.
00:51:08It didn't look good either.
00:51:10It didn't look good.
00:51:11And he goes right to the locker room.
00:51:13And oh my God, Bobby, I thought it was over.
00:51:16And then he comes back out in the second half.
00:51:18Any updates there?
00:51:21I caught the tail end of his locker room talk.
00:51:27He said he's all right.
00:51:29I don't know what that means.
00:51:31We'll see where it goes from here.
00:51:33But he did turn it pretty well.
00:51:35It looked like when he came back on the floor,
00:51:37it was one of those things like tighten it up,
00:51:39just play through it, gut through it.
00:51:41And they're going to be off until Thursday, obviously, here.
00:51:43So there's a handful of days that he's going to be able to just get off his feet.
00:51:48And I'm sure it's just a normal ankle sprain,
00:51:51you know, going to deal with whatever aftereffect there is to that.
00:51:53But I do love how good he looked.
00:51:55And one, he got up there, elevated, a couple big plays.
00:51:58He hit the two threes right away to start the fourth.
00:52:00So I was pleasantly surprised by how good he looked.
00:52:02But that's how it goes with the ankle sprain, right?
00:52:04You play through it that night,
00:52:06and then you're screwed for a couple of days at the very least.
00:52:08Do we know for sure it's an ankle sprain?
00:52:10Like that's confirmed?
00:52:12Looked like it.
00:52:13I don't know what else it would be.
00:52:15I don't know.
00:52:16Reaggravation of his weird injury.
00:52:18Yeah.
00:52:19Like there's body parts that he can find to injure that I've never heard of.
00:52:22All those little bones in the foot.
00:52:24Obviously, it's an ankle sprain.
00:52:25It's an ankle sprain.
00:52:26I'm not really concerned about it.
00:52:29But just because he can sometimes be weird,
00:52:31like I didn't know if there was a chance
00:52:33that maybe he checked back into the game,
00:52:34but there's still something that needs to be assessed further.
00:52:37But it was a good sign, obviously, to see him come out in the second.
00:52:39He was never on the injury report.
00:52:40The public never listed him as such.
00:52:42So probably a dodged situation there.
00:52:46But it is concerning.
00:52:47You never know.
00:52:48You truly never know.
00:52:49Yeah.
00:52:51It is a little concerning, though.
00:52:52Every time you go back to watch these replays where he gets hurt,
00:52:54it's never anything where it's contact.
00:52:56It's always like an awkward move that he's not even moving that fast.
00:52:59And it just feels so unavoidable.
00:53:01Even if he wanted to play safe,
00:53:03it just seems that there's no way to really avoid those motions.
00:53:06And how many times have we gone back and we watched those?
00:53:09So it definitely was a reminder that he remains injury prone.
00:53:12But I think we might have dodged one here.
00:53:16Yeah.
00:53:17And I don't know about the after effects of the injury there, John.
00:53:19Again, I didn't think there was a huge concern of re-injury there.
00:53:22But given that it's the same area,
00:53:24it definitely is something to watch.
00:53:26Nobody seems to know really anything there.
00:53:28Sam Houser also left.
00:53:30This was not the back that's been plaguing him.
00:53:32This is a ductor tightness,
00:53:34which is like kind of leg, hip situation here, thigh.
00:53:39Any updates there, Bobby?
00:53:42Yeah.
00:53:43He told Joe that he's all right.
00:53:45So we'll see how that goes.
00:53:48But they've missed him.
00:53:50They've missed him badly when he's been out this year.
00:53:52I thought they missed him immensely after he went on this game.
00:53:56And it just exposes, you know,
00:53:59I know we love the Peterson thing for a couple of games.
00:54:01They obviously didn't feel comfortable going back to that tonight.
00:54:03And Horford's out in this game.
00:54:05So you'd obviously be going double big with Horford if he was there.
00:54:08But when both those guys are out and you're going K to Cornette late in a game like this,
00:54:12it does expose.
00:54:14You don't have the greatest wing depth right here.
00:54:17The way Walsh has played,
00:54:18Peterson probably not being ready for big moments.
00:54:21If they're going to try to work him into that role eventually.
00:54:24So it did make me think after the game,
00:54:28they don't have a ton of roster flexibility.
00:54:30They obviously don't have a ton to give up here.
00:54:32So there's not going to be like a major wing coming in the door,
00:54:35but they do have to look out there and be like, all right,
00:54:37who's someone who can maybe fill a few minutes here or there, you know,
00:54:41similar to Tillman last year at that big man spawn.
00:54:43He's obviously another guy in that role that just hasn't worked out so far this year.
00:54:48I think that, you know, using that Springer contract,
00:54:50which obviously we've talked about a million times,
00:54:52they're going to have to look at what they can do there.
00:54:54And it's a decent amount of money.
00:54:56They have seconds and first, maybe if they want to get super aggressive,
00:55:00but you look at this and I know two injuries is extreme,
00:55:05but you lose a Horford or a Hauser even for a game or two in the playoffs.
00:55:09And all of a sudden you have to play K to Cornette.
00:55:12That's not great.
00:55:13So again,
00:55:14it'd have to be an emergency for you to end up in that situation.
00:55:17And they still almost worked through it tonight,
00:55:19but it throws their rotation off big time when even Hauser is not out there.
00:55:25And all you have off the bench scoring wise at that point is Pritchard.
00:55:28So there are some bench questions that have emerged to start this year.
00:55:37You're muted.
00:55:38I'm muted again.
00:55:39Let's see what happens here with the injuries, but hopefully they,
00:55:41they avoided anything serious here.
00:55:44Other closing thoughts from this game?
00:55:46No, anything we left on the table.
00:55:48No, just to give my usual Pritchard shout out.
00:55:50I thought that if they won this game, this is going to be a big part of it.
00:55:53He did.
00:55:54Yeah.
00:55:55You know?
00:55:56No, we didn't talk about Pritchard.
00:55:57We didn't talk.
00:55:58Yeah.
00:55:59And I didn't want to be the one.
00:56:00It's a good bounce back.
00:56:01It's a good bounce back.
00:56:02You know what though?
00:56:03They lost them late.
00:56:04He needed the ball a couple of times.
00:56:05I don't know if he,
00:56:06because Tatum won't give him the ball.
00:56:07I'm sorry.
00:56:08You won't when,
00:56:09when the Jays are in there,
00:56:10they don't give like,
00:56:11that's the problem and it's not their fault,
00:56:13but they're the Jays.
00:56:14They're not,
00:56:15they're,
00:56:16they're all NBA players.
00:56:17Pritchard's,
00:56:18they're not deferring to Pritchard,
00:56:19but that you neutralize him when he's out there with those guys.
00:56:23That's part of the problem is he almost needs to be at least the secondary
00:56:27scoring option in a lineup.
00:56:28If he's the third or fourth guy,
00:56:30they're not going to give him the ball and let him dribble around and be
00:56:32Peyton Pritchard.
00:56:33It's just not how the offense is going to run.
00:56:35So I think that that takes something away when he's in those closing
00:56:38lineups,
00:56:39he can't be as effective.
00:56:40So he was in my room.
00:56:41Am I wrong,
00:56:42Noah?
00:56:43You're not going to just give him the ball and let him go.
00:56:45He's in the game.
00:56:47The last eight minutes though,
00:56:48and he had zero shots.
00:56:49Yeah.
00:56:52I mean,
00:56:53it's not ideal because he obviously had the hot hand that was very hard to
00:56:56come by in this game.
00:56:57So yeah,
00:56:58you would have wanted to look for more.
00:56:59I do find,
00:57:00yeah,
00:57:01he obviously thrives when he's the primary ball handler on the floor and
00:57:04the primary chalk creator.
00:57:05And he didn't,
00:57:06he wasn't in that last stretch.
00:57:07So maybe there's something to go back and look at.
00:57:11With alongside both of them,
00:57:13like it's not very often that he's playing alongside both Jason,
00:57:15Kate of Angela and Brian.
00:57:16I'd be curious what his numbers look like in those situations.
00:57:18We can look at that lineup data later,
00:57:20but I would imagine that does impact him quite a bit.
00:57:23But even so,
00:57:24you know,
00:57:25sometimes when we have these games where,
00:57:26again,
00:57:27they lost by a possession or two,
00:57:28I think about like,
00:57:29what would we have spent this show talking about?
00:57:31Had they won?
00:57:32And we would have talked about jail and big fourth quarter,
00:57:34how he came out of a really tough three quarters and really was huge.
00:57:37There KK,
00:57:38KP had his big third after we weren't sure if he was going to be able to
00:57:41play in the second half.
00:57:42And then Pritchard got hot and he was really their only efficient
00:57:45shooter for,
00:57:46for most of these games.
00:57:47So just,
00:57:48yeah,
00:57:49just,
00:57:50I guess it is funny.
00:57:51Cause they have been hanging in there every single game that there's
00:57:53never been a game where it's like,
00:57:54they just got crushed or they were totally out of it.
00:57:56Like every single one of these games,
00:57:57there's almost the story of how they won.
00:57:59And then obviously,
00:58:00you know,
00:58:01a couple of these games,
00:58:02they've lost and every single one.
00:58:04So even when they're playing bad,
00:58:06I mean,
00:58:07Jason Tatum had a horrible offensive game.
00:58:09And again,
00:58:10you know,
00:58:11a lot of settling,
00:58:12but it's also like,
00:58:13well,
00:58:14it's one assist short of a triple double.
00:58:15So it's not like he's not making contributions,
00:58:16but offensively he couldn't get anything going at all.
00:58:19Either.
00:58:20Jalen Brown was,
00:58:21like I said,
00:58:22a really weird game.
00:58:23So a weird game,
00:58:24all,
00:58:25all,
00:58:26all told and
00:58:27devastating defensively in the pain.
00:58:29He was,
00:58:30I'm thrilled that they have this,
00:58:32this stretch here and some days off because they could use them.
00:58:34And again,
00:58:35I'm firmly on the side of heavy load management with these guys.
00:58:39I'd be sitting.
00:58:40Anytime.
00:58:41You have stretches of four out of six or anything like that.
00:58:44I'd be sitting guys left and right.
00:58:46Cause the wins and losses do not matter for this team during the
00:58:50regular season,
00:58:51but keeping these guys fresh and keeping them healthy does.
00:58:53So anybody,
00:58:54anybody's anybody's battling a little bit of anything.
00:58:58Sit,
00:58:59chill,
00:59:00rest.
00:59:01I don't like how many people are grabbing their knees.
00:59:04All the time.
00:59:05I don't like Tatum with these.
00:59:07Yeah.
00:59:08Legs,
00:59:09you know,
00:59:10whites,
00:59:11white went,
00:59:12white took like 40 spills.
00:59:13He let,
00:59:14you know,
00:59:15it was like an old man getting up from injury report today.
00:59:17Yeah.
00:59:18I don't like it.
00:59:19A lot.
00:59:20I think there's a lot of ongoing injuries and there always are,
00:59:22but it's not that late in the season.
00:59:24Jalen doesn't sit a lot of times when he's on the bench.
00:59:26Now he's constantly stretching his hips.
00:59:28So that hip strain that took him out of a couple of games earlier this
00:59:31season,
00:59:32he's obviously still dealing with it.
00:59:33Tatum.
00:59:34I don't think that that was a made up injury that kept him out of that
00:59:36game.
00:59:37Like with the neat white,
00:59:38I felt like I,
00:59:39I thought that he got seriously hurt like three or four times today
00:59:42because he normally gets up so quickly when he's hurt and he fell and
00:59:45would just kind of lay there a couple of times.
00:59:47And I don't think he'd be on the injury report if there wasn't something
00:59:49going on.
00:59:50So tell me,
00:59:51you know,
00:59:52it doesn't help that it's a back-to-back.
00:59:53It doesn't help that there's a number of guys dealing with things.
00:59:55And they're going to really benefit from a couple of days of rest here.
00:59:58I think they don't play till Thursday.
00:59:59Right.
01:00:00So it's a pretty substantial break for just for no good reason,
01:00:03really,
01:00:04except for the cup.
01:00:05Yup.
01:00:06They're giving them a Sunday,
01:00:07Monday,
01:00:08Tuesday off.
01:00:09So they won't be back at practice until Wednesday.
01:00:11Good.
01:00:12Oh,
01:00:13really good.
01:00:14Let's do that.
01:00:15Let's all take a break.
01:00:16I we're tired.
01:00:17I'm making mistakes.
01:00:18You know,
01:00:19Noah's Mike isn't working.
01:00:21I don't know what happened.
01:00:23It's going to kill me.
01:00:24We're all okay,
01:00:25but you know,
01:00:27it's a back-to-back for all of us and it's a Saturday night.
01:00:29So we are happy that you guys got to hang out with us and watch the
01:00:33game.
01:00:34It wasn't a horrible game,
01:00:35but Celtics just couldn't do it when it mattered at the end.
01:00:42And,
01:00:43you know down the stretch,
01:00:44they kind of lost it there and they fall to Memphis one 27,
01:00:47one 21,
01:00:48and a really weird game.
01:00:49We'll see what the after effects are,
01:00:50whether it be injuries or strategies with the Celtics.
01:00:56Now,
01:00:57you know,
01:00:59this whole let's leave people open thing and see if that's something other
01:01:03people do and try to repeat the success that the Grizzlies had tonight.
01:01:06Celtics to a man,
01:01:08every single person,
01:01:09whether we played it on the show or I was following along on Twitter said,
01:01:12yeah,
01:01:13leave them open.
01:01:14I frigging dare you.
01:01:15So we'll see what happens next game.
01:01:16I kind of,
01:01:17I'm kind of curious to see how other teams play it going forward.
01:01:19But as we said,
01:01:20a few days off here and we're going to get fresh and rejuvenated and,
01:01:25and see you guys back on Thursday.
01:01:27Who's the opponent?
01:01:28Detroit.
01:01:29Yes.
01:01:30Washington.
01:01:31It could have been the next,
01:01:32could have been the next,
01:01:34but enjoy the Detroit Piston.
01:01:36I will enjoy it.
01:01:37I will enjoy it.
01:01:38And that's that.
01:01:39And so I hope you guys enjoyed the show.
01:01:41Thank you again to Noah for hopping on right away here with a shorthanded
01:01:45garden report crew,
01:01:46Bobby Manning as well.
01:01:48Jackson Tolliver down there as the producer and our videographer,
01:01:52as well as Rich LeMay.
01:01:53By the way,
01:01:55His presence is made no matter what,
01:01:57even on days I try to get them not to work this,
01:01:59this,
01:02:00this guy pops into the window here and starts doing stuff.
01:02:04Go leave us alone on it.
01:02:06Go have a drink,
01:02:08do something.
01:02:09What's up,
01:02:10John.
01:02:11I got a quick question for you.
01:02:12Was that the best dunk you've seen at TD garden?
01:02:14I don't know.
01:02:16It's the best dunk I've seen in person.
01:02:18I think.
01:02:19Yeah.
01:02:20You guys.
01:02:23I think so.
01:02:24I don't think.
01:02:27I can't think of one.
01:02:28You mean.
01:02:29You mean the Moran.
01:02:30Here's why.
01:02:31Here's why I don't put it as the best dunk.
01:02:33It was delicate.
01:02:36Like it was acrobatic,
01:02:37but it wasn't thunderous.
01:02:39It was placed through the,
01:02:41through the,
01:02:42through the,
01:02:43through the,
01:02:44you know,
01:02:45through the net,
01:02:46like,
01:02:47but it was very,
01:02:48very graceful and very athletic,
01:02:51but ultimately for something to be the best dunk,
01:02:55I think you need some aggression and it didn't have it.
01:02:58It was very dainty almost.
01:03:00So that's why it falls kind of how he does it though.
01:03:03And I think he's trying to,
01:03:04I don't know.
01:03:05Ridiculous things.
01:03:08So like,
01:03:09again,
01:03:10it was incredibly athletic,
01:03:11impressive,
01:03:12but no,
01:03:13I,
01:03:14for me,
01:03:15dunks have dunks need a little violence.
01:03:16And so that one didn't have it.
01:03:18And,
01:03:19and so that's,
01:03:20no,
01:03:21it does not reach the thing.
01:03:22That'll be a good video for this week.
01:03:23Best dunks in Celtics games.
01:03:25Yeah.
01:03:26Yeah.
01:03:27That's good.
01:03:28So yeah,
01:03:29that's,
01:03:30that's my take on it,
01:03:31but it was impressive for sure.
01:03:32Anyway,
01:03:33thank you guys for hanging out.
01:03:34We do appreciate it.
01:03:35We will see everyone on Thursday.
01:03:36We'll have more stuff throughout the week,
01:03:37even before Thursday,
01:03:38for sure.
01:03:39And you can always follow along.
01:03:40Oh,
01:03:41the LeBron one.
01:03:42That's a good,
01:03:43that's a good one.
01:03:44Jalen on LeBron or Tatum on LeBron.
01:03:45No LeBron.
01:03:46Well,
01:03:47yeah.
01:03:48I mean,
01:03:49I think it was,
01:03:50it was the,
01:03:51like the most recent article
01:03:52was about the story of the old family,
01:03:53which is like his career.
01:03:54Or Jalen on the,
01:03:55on LeBron with the game blouses sort of hang afterwards was really good,
01:03:57but there's,
01:03:58there's been some good ones.
01:03:59And like every rob Williams Elle Uber ever,
01:04:00but anyway.
01:04:01So I,
01:04:02I love those too,
01:04:05but again,
01:04:06Bobby Manning writing for CLNS media.
01:04:08Check his check,
01:04:09his stuff out,
01:04:10check Noah out on Celtics blog.
01:04:11Also check out Noah's most recent article might not be the most recent,
01:04:14recent, but about Jason Tatum and Deuce and the family
01:04:17atmosphere at the garden. That's a good read as well. So check
01:04:20that out. And thank you guys again for hanging out with us.
01:04:23We will see you on Thursday.
01:04:25No one's sneaking a vegan brownie by me. I'll tell you.
01:04:27Okay, you know what, John? You have to feel that way too,
01:04:30Bobby. I have to feel that way.
01:04:32Let's buy it all over and make Luke your first center.
01:04:35Bobby, we gave you Luke hour earlier. We're not going to end
01:04:38this on a damn conversation about Luke.
