00:00Celtics Wednesday here on Jones and Keefe which means it's time for our
00:04Celtics Minute with Terp. You can dial us up 617-779-7937
00:10You got questions for Terp? It's a good time to get in with some good Celtics
00:13questions if you want to dial it up. Terp, you excited for the big show
00:17outing after the program? I can't wait. I didn't know it was gonna be a bunch of
00:20puzzles. I didn't really know what to expect. I haven't stretched yet. I gotta
00:24get on that. So the Celtics fortunately are not in the NBA Cup because if they
00:27were you might have been on the sidelines. You might have had split
00:30responsibilities. They wouldn't have played tonight. Well maybe could have been. They wouldn't play in the
00:34Knicks tonight had they made it. So look at that. There you go.
00:37You know what? It all worked out. Let's go back to the weekend for the
00:43Celtics. Buck's win was pretty entertaining. Then you get the Grizzlies
00:46loss where Drew Holiday is left all alone to shoot 17 threes. He made four of
00:51them. Is that an approach that'll be effective against the Celtics going
00:55forward? Should other teams copy it? What did you think of Memphis's approach the
00:58other night? Yeah it was interesting and it's something I'm certainly gonna keep
01:01an eye on to see if other teams do it. The problem is it's just so hard with
01:05this team because they're just such great three-point shooters and the NBA
01:09tracks this kind of stuff. So on Saturday with Drew Holiday 14 of his 17
01:15three-point attempts were considered wide open which means the closest
01:18defender is six feet away. If you're looking down the list of Celtics on
01:22those wide open attempts, Tatum shoots 54%, Sam Hauser 42%, Al Horford 41%, Peyton
01:30Pritchard 40%. They're all above league average or at league average. So some
01:34nights it's gonna work. Even Holiday's league average on the wide
01:37open? He's 34% even after that that stinker. But he was last year the best
01:41corner three-point shooter in the league. Shot right around a career-high I believe
01:45from percentage standpoint. So some days it's gonna work and other days it's not.
01:49But the way I'm kind of looking at it with this team is is it sustainable over
01:53a seven-game series? Is it gonna work four games out of seven? I just don't
01:56think so because of how well they shoot the ball. Yeah cuz we saw the Warriors
02:00try it with Jalen Brown right and they're like you go ahead and take
02:03him and he's like making them all go all right well this and then they had to
02:05just real quick yeah too late yeah that didn't work but I don't think it's worth
02:09a shot but I guess I they're all too good like overall but that was a bad
02:13night for him I think holiday first career so why does it matter why does it
02:17matter what everybody else shoots if you're staying on everybody else and
02:19leaving holiday open then it only matters what holiday shoots right well
02:22the thing is with the Celtics offense is it's literally designed to just create
02:25open shots so in there all the players heads as they're driving in the room
02:28whatever it is there's a million reads going on they work on this in practice
02:32all the time is making the right reads and all it is is just trying to find the
02:35open shot so if you're giving the Celtics an open shot they're gonna take
02:38it that's how their offense that's what makes Missoula ball so hard to defend is
02:42because they all spaced the floor so well in their great three-point shooters
02:45so it kind of played into it in a way but obviously the shots weren't falling
02:49that night yeah like if you have Rondo or Ben Simmons like obviously it makes
02:53sense you sag way off them they're like what do we do now are you playing
02:56against a man's zone like what is this but with these guys I think more often
02:59than not they'll probably out shoot it my questions more about just drew holiday
03:03in general like not just that game where you know he wasn't hitting his threes
03:07but he's the one guy when me and Jones were talking about the team this year
03:11versus last year and I'm like I think they're better this year part of it is
03:14Peyton Pritchard sort of emergence but drew holiday and part of it's his age
03:18clearly is on the other side of his career how do you think he's been
03:23overall I know he's a guy that might be saving some of it for the postseason he
03:27was in the Olympics played a lot of basketball but he might be the one guy
03:31that's actually not better than he was a year ago what do you make of his season
03:35so far yeah I'm with you he's definitely the one guy that hasn't really taken a
03:38step forward I think for the most part across the board everyone's kind of
03:41improved a little bit Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown averaging career highs in
03:44assist Derek White shooting a career high in percentage percentage wise also
03:48averaging career high points Al Horford from three Peyton Pritchard obviously
03:51he should be in the conversation for most improved and then there's true
03:54holiday who really hasn't really taken that step and part of that I think is
03:58because 36 years old just played in the Olympics obviously played over the
04:02Celtics played 101 games last year like that's a lot and then they have a
04:05shortened offseason so part of it I think it is kind of ramping him up and
04:09it took him a little while last year to to find his footing offensively remember
04:13it wasn't until that West Coast trip at the end of December where he really
04:17started finding his place within the offense and I think he's gonna get there
04:20eventually and it's obviously hard when you're not hitting your shots and I
04:24think that could be part of tired legs and maybe the Celtics are kind of
04:27looking at that because last week usually a player only sits one game
04:30after when they're kind of resting he sat to he sat the Miami and the Detroit
04:34game so I think it is something they're watching but in the end you can't really
04:38be worried about your holiday because you know how good he is especially in
04:41those clutch situations look at the Milwaukee game on Friday I mean he hit
04:44the go-ahead floater on the three that Al Horford missed on the Giannis
04:47transition three which was absolutely terrible shot the one that got the
04:52rebound found out and that gave a lead so he's gonna make those plays when you
04:55need them so it's amazing Giannis still takes those shots it's so like he's so
05:00good when he wants to be and he can get to the hoop anytime he wants but there's
05:04something in his head he's like I can make these threes it's like you can't
05:07you have a career proof that you cannot hit those and maybe saw Al Horford and
05:12kind of steered away as the Giannis stopper Al Horford still at the right
05:15page 38 he's gone so mixed in with the loss against the Grizzlies was Marcus
05:21smarts return he did not play well in the game but the Grizzlies won that game
05:26what was that that whole experience like it was brief really like the kind of
05:30Marcus smart reunion it was really only when he checked in they got the standing
05:33ovation that was pretty cool I just think the shines kind of off he was
05:37obviously one of the most polarizing players in recent memory in Boston
05:41sports like either loved him or he hated him there was really no in-between but I
05:45think with Chris tops being so well-liked and then winning a
05:48championship it's kind of like whatever now people have kind of moved on a
05:51little bit he'll always be loved he'll always have a special place but nobody's
05:55really complaining about the players seem to like I know they said nice
05:58things Jalen was really hyper mom he watched or I watched the whole interview
06:02Abby chin did where he's still like they were get they were given a lot when
06:07they came in meeting Tatum and Brown where he still sounds like a little
06:10jealous about how much they were given early on in his career like if the
06:13players moved on do they still seem like they miss Marcus all or they just like
06:17out we're in a way better spot I think they still really like they love them
06:20they're there still have that close friendship but I don't think it's
06:24necessarily they miss him on the court because they've just been so much better
06:26like they love playing with Chris Dobbs and obviously drew was the de facto
06:31Marcus replacement so it's hard because they've been so much better but they'll
06:35always love and respect him and even Marcus admitted it at shootaround before
06:39the game he's like it was a great business move I probably would have done
06:41it myself so if he's saying that it says a lot like it was just a no-brainer and
06:45we see that every day what kind of chances do you give Memphis being in the
06:49finals because I feel like we never talk about them but John Moran's having an
06:52awesome year they had a good record a bit hot seems pretty wide open in the
06:56West could we get a Celtics versus Marcus smart finals I mean I wouldn't
07:00rule them out two years ago they were a 51 win team in second in the Western
07:03Conference but last year they set NBA records for the amount of injuries they
07:07had so that's legit team and I think a team that people aren't really
07:11considering out West because obviously the Nuggets have the best player in the
07:14world and Nicola Jokic and then you got the Thunder who that young team really
07:18kind of up-and-coming and they remind me a little bit of like 2022 Celtics a team
07:22that's young really now it's their time to get in and if the Celtics are to see
07:25him I can kind of see it going a similar way where the Celtics have been there
07:28and done that okay C hasn't so Memphis is absolutely a team to watch out West
07:33and I think they have a good collection of athleticism and size and length guys
07:38taking another step like Jaron Jackson jr. has been incredible
07:41obviously John Moran's a superstar when he's on the court so that's definitely a
07:44team that people should have on their radar all right check out his work at
