Malaysia’s first electric vehicle (EV), the e.MAS7, will serve as the official car during the nation’s Asean chairmanship next year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced on Monday (Dec 16).

At the launch of the e.MAS7, Anwar emphasised the government’s commitment to supporting the Proton-Geely joint venture and advancing sustainable transportation.

Anwar added that the e.MAS7 aligns with Malaysia’s net-zero emissions goal and the nation’s low-carbon mobility blueprint, marking a significant step towards a greener future.

00:00Today, coincidentally, in Hanzhong, Premier Li Qiang of China visited Jili Bank, to announce
00:19a joint venture between China and Jili Bank, and I am here to not only give an opportunity
00:31to launch the E-MAS7 EV model, but also to give a strong support.
00:41For example, for ASEAN next year, E-MAS7 is our official name.
00:54In the near future, I am also happy to see that this car will be built in Malaysia, in Tanjung Malim,
01:01uplifting Malaysian vendors through the transfer of new technologies and skills associated with EVs.
01:11Now, as a national car producer, Proton should leverage on the role in the local automotive industry
01:20and this EV project. The National Automotive Policy 2020 should be a reference by Proton
01:28in producing this model later in the country. It is incumbent, therefore, on companies that operate
01:35in our automotive industry, not just to sell vehicles, but also to provide opportunities
01:42for investment and employment via the setting up of a holistic ecosystem.
01:50The duty of the government, for example, not only advise on industry-friendly policies
01:57and incentives, of course, that would benefit both the country and the industry,
02:04but also to ensure that we do provide the adequate infrastructure, which means airports, ports, highways,
02:14and then the ecosystem. But your challenge and our challenge too is the supply side.
02:22We must ensure that you have the capacity and a clear policy to encourage local production
02:33and support the local industries, the local vendors, including the women butlers.
02:40Now, today, more than 75% of the energy consumed in Asia comes from hydrocarbons
02:49and demand is projected to double by 2030. Now, we must balance demand with security, affordability,
02:58and sustainability. Under the Responsible Transition Initiative,
03:06Malaysia enhances its competitiveness by reducing our fossil fuel dependencies
03:14and nurture growth in green mobility, renewable energy, and energy storage solutions.
03:21Our projections indicate this could yield investment opportunities as high as
03:281.3 trillion ringgit by 2050, an additional contribution of 220 billion ringgit
03:41to the Malaysian GDP and generate, inshallah, over 300,000 job opportunities.
03:55Now, on the automotive front, we have the low-carbon mobility blueprint
04:01to reduce emissions from the transportation sector, which currently ranks as the second-largest
04:08CO2 emitter, and our framework includes four key areas of focus.
04:16The launch of Proton's first SUV EV today is extremely timely and it will be a catalyst
04:25that moves us into the next era of low-carbon mobility.
04:30It is the government's wish for Proton and its strategic partner Geely
04:34to continue to lead the development of Malaysia's automotive competencies and ecosystem.
04:41I am confident that with the development of Automotive Hitech Valley in Tanjung Malim,
04:47more local vendors will be involved with the production not only of Proton cars,
04:53but also for other brands. This would be a shining example of the networking opportunities
05:00and economic cooperation that has existed between Malaysia and China for over 50 years,
05:09and I commend both parties for their creativity and diligence to make this partnership a success.
05:16May I add that in most of my meetings with President Xi Jinping, Premier Lee Chiang,
05:23Geely Proton will most certainly come up, which shows the commitment of both China and Malaysia
05:36to ensure that this arrangement succeeds and it is in our interest too that we do what is necessary
05:49to make sure that this venture succeeds.
05:52Now, the DRB-HICOM and Geely partnership, which involves also the commitment of these two
06:06very friendly relations between China and Malaysia, is an example that proves
06:12Malaysia is an independent trading nation with a high-tech economy,
06:18providing high-value goods for the region and the rest of the world.
06:23Now, moving forward, we intend for this partnership to further support our economy and our people.
06:32I therefore would like to reiterate what I have said often times,
06:40that this must be treated as a major challenge for us.
06:45Proton and Geely, thank you for your hard work to make the nation's EV ambitions a reality,
06:53but it is just a beginning.
06:57And I therefore need to express my profound appreciation not only to the companies,
07:04but to the professionals and our Malaysian workers who have been there, committed to ensure the success.
07:15So, once again, I would like to express my appreciation and pride.
07:22Today is a special day.
07:24E-MAS 7 is not only a vehicle, but it fulfills one of the pillars of the civil economy,
07:37from the point of view of EV and our efforts to make changes,
07:43leaving the old carbon industry to the new one.
07:48It is therefore my honour to officially launch the first SUV EV with Proton's brand, the Proton E-MAS 7.
