00:00A wonderful and over-the-hump Wednesday evening to you all.
00:06Yours truly, Sharm Zespina here for PTV News Now.
00:09Kicking off our breaking stories at the hour.
00:13Defense Secretary Gilberto Guadagnole this afternoon made it formally known no truce
00:17has been declared, let alone offered, between the government and the CBP-NPA thus far.
00:23For the government's part, the DND chief spoke in no uncertain terms of the government not
00:28extending the olive branch to the Reds all throughout the Advent and Christmas seasons.
00:32He said any truce with the Reds is cutting a deal with terrorists and criminals.
00:38On this same breath, CPP-NPA spokesperson Marco Valbuena accused the military of declaring
00:44martial law in the countryside, which has led to mistrust from the left and its dismissal
00:49of any offer of a ceasefire from the government.
00:52Valbuena also blamed the military for its subtle and ongoing disinformation campaign,
00:57claiming the AFP has repeatedly spread the lie of the NPA having only one and weakened
01:03guerrilla front, but has been debunked by the AFP's own actions.
01:08Yesterday, Tuesday, AFP spokesperson Colonel Francel Margareth Padilla reported a 15-minute
01:14armed encounter between the 46th Infantry Battalion and the rebels, led by alias Budil
01:20or NPA leader Artemio Solayao, in Catbalogan, Samar, Friday last week, December 13.
01:28In the meantime, inflation drives voter discontent worldwide to the ballot box and punishes the
01:35ruling party for the status quo early 2022.
01:39With the COVID-19 pandemic still raging and a global economy shut down, the Russian invasion
01:45of Ukraine aggravated an already disrupted supply chain worldwide that triggers skyrocketing
01:50inflation everywhere on the planet.
01:53This fallout from soaring prices has pushed people to blame the people in charge and look
01:58around and elsewhere for change in the status quo, a universal backlash on incumbents as
02:04we hear more from this VOA story.
02:072024 has been the biggest international election year in history as voters cast ballots in
02:14nearly 70 countries, representing half the global population.
02:18And despite the diversity of candidates and issues, voters nearly everywhere had one thing
02:23in common, they were not happy with those in charge.
02:27From Japan to North Macedonia, incumbent parties suffered major defeats.
02:32The trend affected left-wing parties like South Africa's African National Congress and
02:36right-wing ones like the United Kingdom's Conservative Party.
02:41Rather than moving in any political direction, voters punished whichever party was presiding
02:45over what they perceived as a period of global instability and worsening economic conditions
02:51for ordinary people, multiple analyses show.
02:55The primary factor driving this economic discontent has been inflation, which has risen sharply
03:01across the world since 2022.
03:05That year, the COVID-19 pandemic's disruption of international trade was compounded by Russia's
03:10invasion of Ukraine, sending a shock through supply chains and raising prices for many
03:15necessities in consumer goods.
03:18While inflation is only one piece of the overall economic picture, studies have shown
03:23it plays an outsized role in people's perception of the economy's health due to its immediate
03:29visibility.
03:30This is the case even when other indicators like unemployment and relative GDP growth
03:35are good or when a country is performing well relative to others.
03:40And even though the global inflation trend was not driven by any given political program
03:45or economic policy at the national level, each country's governing parties have still
03:50been blamed.
03:52Many countries, including the United States, Senegal and Sri Lanka, saw the ruling party
03:57cede control to the opposition.
04:00In others, such as India and France, incumbent parties lost parliamentary seats but were
04:05able to hang out of power by forging coalitions with other parties.
04:10Only a few countries managed to buck the trend, most notably Mexico, where the popularity
04:15of the Marina Party's economic redistribution programs helped Claudia Scheinbaum secure
04:20a landslide victory.
04:22In recent years, democratic backsliding in international elections and a global shift
04:27toward right-wing populism have concerned many experts.
04:32But 2024's results suggest a less ideological explanation.
04:37Voters were simply dissatisfied with the political status quo and chose something else, whichever
04:43that happened to be.
04:48At this moment, let's turn to my colleague in PTV's Baguio City Studios for what's hot
04:52and happening in the Cordilleras, Ala.
06:43The GDP growth at the national level is at 6.2%, but in the region it's 7.7%.
07:03The GDP growth at the national level is at 6.2%, but in the region it's 7.7%.
07:11The GDP growth at the national level is at 6.7%, but in the region it's 7.7%.
07:17So we are one of the highest in the Philippines.
07:19So we're in the bracket in 2023, and we're looking at a higher GDP growth for 2024, considering
07:28the fact that we have more MSMEs.
07:42Many thanks, Ala.
07:44And with that, we have come to the end of the show.
