00:00It's a little shtick on your big shtick.
00:03Now back to Stiney and Guru on 95.7 The Game.
00:07All right, the crossover is brought to you by Abundant Life Weight Loss.
00:11They know the secret to losing up to one pound of fat every day.
00:15Go to AbundantLifeWeightLoss.com.
00:18Welcome in Dan Dibley and Mark Willard.
00:21Hey, gentlemen.
00:22Hello.
00:23What's good?
00:24Watch out for the haters, Mark.
00:25Oh, they're everywhere.
00:26Oh, boy.
00:27They're everywhere every day.
00:28Why?
00:29Because two of them in the room, hater alert, we're in a fantasy playoff and Stiney and
00:33kids don't want to see us win.
00:35It's not about hatred.
00:36Stiney just cussed me out after a beautiful show together.
00:38It's not about hatred.
00:39Oh, my God.
00:40It brings me back to the days of Jock Purdy, for those of you who remember when we would
00:45do Jock Purdy with Whitey Gleeson and the bit was so beautiful because Whitey's a genius
00:51and it was a good old-fashioned competition, but you would get out to an early lead and
00:56you'd be celebrating early.
00:58You'd be doing your sniff and doing the ha-ha and the skeet-skeet and inevitably, it would
01:04all go a certain way and you would at some point lose and feel the pain.
01:09You would feel the pain, but the pain was real and the joy that I felt along with thousands
01:14of people in the audience, it's something that I can't get over.
01:17So something about watching you lose and the way you wear it on your sleeve, it brings
01:22me joy.
01:23Now, as far as Willard goes, I can't have him win again because he goes from smug to
01:29faux-humble.
01:30It wasn't me, it was my fantasy players and I'm just out here with my head down trying
01:36to do the best I can, and Lucas, God forbid Lucas win, the commissioner, he can't win,
01:43so it's all about team-chickering.
01:44Yeah, I'm over here panicked about Alvin Kamara, who's probably going to miss the game.
01:48And Stiney goes, you got a sickness, excuse me for preparing for my playoff game.
01:53I mean, and Stiney, of course, the one you dispatched of just hours ago.
01:59Do you really wish me luck, though, to go get it?
02:02That's good.
02:03I'm just going to borrow from Draymond and say, don't let me win another FN Championship.
02:07No, for sure.
02:08Don't let me win.
02:10But Guru, here's what I'd say to you, don't get ahead of yourself, this is a long week
02:14now.
02:15Oh, no doubt.
02:16Okay?
02:18We're going to play off tomorrow.
02:19Right?
02:20But that's my point.
02:21Like, there are Saturday games this week, this is going to be a journey, don't get yourself
02:26stressed out on a Wednesday now.
02:28I appreciate it, I get it.
02:29We got a lot of football, and a lot of ups, and a lot of downs.
02:33This is already, annoyingly, one of those weeks.
02:36Is the world experiencing this, or is it just me?
02:38I have felt like it's Friday for three days.
02:42I don't know if it's because Christmas is a week from today.
02:44It must be, yeah.
02:45I don't know what is going on in my brain, but it's only Wednesday, and I swear to God
02:49it's been Thursday or Friday the whole week already, so like, dude, we got to ease into
02:54this thing.
02:55The long game.
02:56Take your time.
02:57You're going to get some Alvin Kamara practice reports.
03:00There's plenty of time.
03:01It's just a click away.
03:02All right.
03:03I'm backstabbing.
03:04You and Schefter, Saturday night on Twitter, you can get together and figure it all out.
03:09There's time.
03:10Everything's okay.
03:11We're going to make it.
03:12Let's go.
03:14This is my favorite part of the season, and also my least favorite, because it's cool
03:18that there are Saturday games, and college, and all your cute little bowl games, and I
03:22found out today on the BART train that there's actually a Snoop Bowl.
03:27There's a bowl that used to be named for a corporate sponsorship.
03:30It's now Snoop.
03:31Come on.
03:32The Snoop Bowl.
03:34Is it actually Snoop, like Snoop Dogg?
03:36Correct.
03:37Dude, what is that guy not involved in?
03:39He is.
03:40He is cute.
03:41He's involved in a lot.
03:42If you want to become a marketing class, just study Snoop, and nothing else.
03:48He's the most brilliant marketer in the history of our country.
03:53His trajectory is very Tyson-esque in that it was hard scrabble, it was behind bars,
03:59it was superstardom, and now it's gone into a whole new realm.
04:02It is.
04:03Joker's wild.
04:04I go, damn.
04:05Snoop is hard out here.
04:06And then he blew up.
04:08Every brand sits in a room and goes, all right, what do we want for our ad campaign?
04:13And some guy named Jim in the corner's like, how about Snoop?
04:17And then they hire him for $3 million, and there he is.
04:21Well, he's available.
04:22He's selling phones, he's selling kids' books.
04:25I mean, he's got his name up for a bowl?
04:28Come on, man.
04:29It's pretty impressive.
04:30It's an incredible story.
04:31So anyway, this is my favorite time of the year because you do get Saturday Football,
04:35NFL, but it's my least favorite because we're down to just 48.
04:3948 regular season games in the NFL, and I remind my partner because it's kind of a little
04:45slap in the face because we're running out of time here for football.
04:48Well, and if you do, like, this is going to be a weird dynamic next week.
04:5251?
04:53Are we at 51?
04:55You've got three weeks left, and there are 16 games a week.
05:0048.
05:01So that's regular season.
05:02Oh, right.
05:0348 regular season.
05:04Correct.
05:05Right.
05:06Okay.
05:07Correct.
05:08Anyway.
05:09I was thinking it should have been three times 17.
05:10Even if you're right, don't challenge him with math.
05:14You're going to jump in the crossover for the first time and try to check me?
05:18You're going to check me?
05:20Check mate, Steinmetz.
05:22Anyway, I don't know.
05:23We're going to double check the math there.
05:25Next Wednesday is going to be a weird dynamic for people.
05:29Why?
05:30Because there's football games on a Wednesday.
05:32It's Christmas.
05:33Oh, yeah.
05:34Right.
05:35The next NFL week starts on Wednesday, and it happens to be the start of the Super Bowl.
05:40Yeah.
05:41Well, you're right.
05:42You want to talk about a long journey.
05:44You're going to start that sucker on a Wednesday.
05:46Man.
05:47Lamar's going to do things and then get to sit there for three days and find out if it matters.
05:51It's a journey, Steinie.
05:53It's a journey.
05:54And I should say this for Friday and what's bugging me, but the NFL, you don't need to do that.
05:59Like, the Christmas day is the NBA's day.
06:02Well, it used to be.
06:03You don't need to do it, NFL.
06:06Why does that matter?
06:08Why do they have to need to?
06:09They want to.
06:10And they dominate.
06:11Of course.
06:12They dominate, and we know that.
06:13It's like my brother Mike, when we were kids, and he's six years older than me, he could
06:17come up to me at any time during our childhood and take what I have, punch me in the face,
06:23push me in the trundle bed, do whatever he wants to do.
06:26He's 14.
06:27I'm eight.
06:28He's 16.
06:29I'm 10.
06:30But you're brothers.
06:31Because you can do something doesn't mean you do it.
06:34But you're brothers.
06:35You're brothers.
06:36The NFL and the NBA are not brothers.
06:37The NFL knows.
06:38No, but the NFL will reign supreme no matter when they do it.
06:41You didn't need to do this to the NBA.
06:43But that is one of the highest rated days of the year.
06:46That's all.
06:47The NFL's highest rated day of the year is the day that they play football.
06:50Well, right.
06:51But my point is, you're not wrong.
06:53You don't need to, but I'm sort of of the mind of like, why wouldn't you?
06:57Why wouldn't you?
06:58Like, they're a business.
06:59I just noticed.
07:00Maybe instead of you're not wrong, maybe you should say, no, you're right.
07:05It's just.
07:06No, the you're not wrong is the passive aggressive.
07:09Exactly.
07:10And I can see how it can get you a little bit defensive.
07:15That's fine.
07:16That's my job.
07:17I'm here to get you defensive.
07:20And I'm here to go on the offensive.
07:22Oh, from now on.
07:23This is the new me.
07:24Look at him.
07:25No more fantasy and aggressive radio.
07:29Yeah.
07:30Okay.
07:31How do we make the NBA better?
07:32That's what we've been talking down.
07:33Kill the all-star game.
07:34No, they already fixed it.
07:37They did that.
07:38Stop.
07:39They fixed that damn thing.
07:40I'm excited that it's coming here and I will reserve judgment until I see it.
07:44Come on, Miller.
07:45But for those of you who don't know the new format that got introduced, and I actually
07:49am not even familiar enough with it to describe it to others.
07:52But basically we've got a four team tournament now.
07:55Right.
07:56And people are only playing to what, to 28 points or something like that.
07:5940.
08:0040.
08:01Okay.
08:02Is this the all-star game or 24 hour fit?
08:03I mean, I just.
08:04There'll be a lot less fighting in this one.
08:06Here's the deal, Goo.
08:07The way I look at it.
08:08It's not that this is a bad idea.
08:10It's that it's an admission that there's no idea.
08:14What happened to East versus West?
08:17It's gone.
08:18It's gone.
08:19What made it evaporate?
08:21I'm asking.
08:22Because the players don't care enough.
08:24They're not going to play.
08:26Didn't the winning team last year have more than 200 points?
08:28Yes.
08:29Yeah.
08:30Yes, they did.
08:31They had the 1988 NBA all-star game on Thanksgiving on NBA TV.
08:35Jordan, Carl Malone, and it was 1-8, 1-08, 1-11.
08:39They were playing like it was game seven.
08:41And I said, what happened there?
08:43I said, pops, look.
08:44They were bowling, playing.
08:46But that's our age.
08:48Like, people change.
08:50And 50, 60, 70 years old and you look at America and you go, what the hell?
08:55Is going on here?
08:56That's how it is.
08:57They're not going to play.
08:59Go to a high school.
09:01Every guy's got the same haircut.
09:03Floppy, can't see through it.
09:04Wow, man.
09:05But they're not.
09:06That's how it is now.
09:07We're not supposed to get it.
09:09That's how it is.
09:10They're not going to play.
09:12So, like, for everybody and Kevin Durant, take this.
09:15Don't rip Adam Silver.
09:16Rip yourself.
09:18Kevin thinks this is an awful play.
09:20And I love him.
09:21What the hell do you want Adam to do?
09:23You're not going to try.
09:25So, what would you like us to do?
09:28I actually think one of the few guys who could actually say it is Durant.
09:33Because I look at him as a guy who loves the game.
09:36He wants the ball.
09:37Like, even in an all-star game, he's going to play hard.
09:40Is he?
09:41I mean, he's going to get sucked into the vortex.
09:44But, like, all I'm saying is, and you didn't say this.
09:48You weren't wrong.
09:49I'm not wrong.
09:51Like, Durant doesn't have a competitiveness problem.
09:54He likes to compete.
09:55I agree with you.
09:56But, like, honestly, if I was a reporter and sitting in front of that rant,
10:01Kevin, what would you like Adam to do?
10:04You're saying that you're part of the problem.
10:06Well, your comrades, your peers.
10:09How is he supposed to come up with anything that is compelling if you won't try?
10:15Well, they should go the way that the NFL has gone
10:17because the NFL players were no longer trying.
10:20They had all these rules of no tackling, no blitzing, no anything.
10:25And now the NFL has decided, you know what?
10:27We're going to scrap the whole thing.
10:29We're going to make it a mockery.
10:31And the players actually kind of like it.
10:33So next stop for the NBA is for them to do a whole bunch of, like,
10:37there'll be a Nerf shot.
10:39There'll be a pop-a-shot contest.
10:41And there'll be, like, a dribble relay.
10:44And there'll be all the nonsense that players actually want to do.
10:47There'll be a video game contest and all the rest of it.
10:49I'm irritated that the first time it won't be a game,
10:52even if there's no defense,
10:54since 2000, the last time we had the All-Star Game at Oracle,
10:57it'll be on our watch.
10:59And that's just nasty that it's not all one.
11:02And I get what Durant was saying, but I do like your rebuttal.
11:05Well, whose fault is it?
11:07Do you think that this will be more competitive because it's a game to 40
11:11and the four-team format will be three eight-player teams from the East and West
11:17and the best eight from the Futures game, the Rising Stars.
11:21So it'll be a four-team round-robin, games to 40.
11:25So you won't have to really go through the long slog of, you know,
11:29it's 148-141 after three quarters.
11:32It'll be a much quicker, like, okay, we're down 37-34.
11:36We can try to win this game.
11:38I do think that competition will be up.
11:41The format's a little weird,
11:42but I do think it's going to be much more befitting of a younger audience.
11:46Quicker resolution, faster games, new players.
11:49Let's keep it moving.
11:51You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM, at HD1 San Francisco,
11:55always live on the free Odyssey app, Twitch and YouTube,
11:58powered by First NorCal Credit Union.
12:00There's going to be 12 Eastern Conference All-Stars
12:04and 12 Western Conference All-Stars.
12:06Of those 24 players, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Shaquille O'Neal
12:13will have a draft.
12:15They will each draft eight players.
12:17So those are three of the four teams.
12:19And then, as Dib said, the fourth team is the Rising Stars team.
12:23So they're going to have four teams of eight
12:26and basically play a pickup game tournament
12:28where there'll be a game up to 40.
12:30Will it be officiated?
12:31Of course.
12:32Of course.
12:33Yeah.
12:34And it'll be full court?
12:35Yeah.
12:36Yeah, 5-on-5.
12:37Uh-oh, goo's coming around.
12:39It actually probably should be half court, 3-on-3.
12:42I don't mind the 3-on-3.
12:44Well, let's put the real rat on the table.
12:46Why are the ratings down with the league?
12:48I said my number one thing, if you ask me, nobody did.
12:52During all the social injustice and they had the bubble,
12:56I thought that rubbed a sector of the society maybe the wrong way
12:59and you lost fringe NBA fans.
13:02I'm not saying I have proof to back up that data.
13:04I don't think it helped.
13:06And some disagree, but that would be in my top three
13:10of why the ratings are going the other way
13:12or why people decided they don't want to watch.
13:15I just think collectively what I think is in content,
13:22anything that is creative, entertaining content,
13:25I think the audience takes its cues from the participants.
13:30And so we have been fed for a number of years now
13:34that this is not urgent.
13:36So, fine, it's not urgent.
13:39We shrug our shoulders.
13:41And so from the perspective of they don't play as much
13:45or they don't play as hard.
13:47Season doesn't mean anything.
13:48Or now we've got this ridiculous NBA cup
13:51where I'm supposed to be excited that millionaires are making more money.
13:54Whatever it is that you're doing,
13:57you're feeding us with the idea that you can't even motivate yourselves.
14:03So why the hell would we be motivated?
14:05It'd be like you two doing a radio show where you came in
14:09and right at 10 o'clock you're just like,
14:11what do you want to talk about?
14:14I don't know.
14:15It's just Wednesday.
14:17Like if you guys did that,
14:19who the bleep would be excited about your show?
14:22But instead there's music and Steini goes,
14:25and you come in with the energy you bring into a room.
14:28You tell people today is my best day.
14:32Let's go.
14:33The NBA doesn't do that.
14:35So we're taking our cues from them.
14:37I read the headline,
14:38and if I can put Mark's great explanation into just one sentence,
14:43they don't care, so why should I?
14:46And if you want to fix it, you can fix it.
14:49And the fix would be you divide the season into 20-game increments,
14:54and after 20 games,
14:56if you're the number one top-ranked team in your conference,
14:59you make the playoffs,
15:00and then after 20 games you start over.
15:02So if you are, for example, a middling team,
15:05like maybe Sacramento is a good example,
15:07where your first 20 didn't go great,
15:09okay, now you're 0-0, and you start again.
15:12So the winner of the four quadrants, the 20-game quadrants,
15:15you get automatic berths,
15:17and then the next four best overall records,
15:19you make the playoffs as well.
15:21The way they do it now with 10 teams get into something,
15:25it makes it so there's no urgency.
15:27And Mark used the word.
15:28It's urgency.
15:29NFL is urgent.
15:3017 games, it matters.
15:33The Niners are out of it, not really.
15:36The Niners can still make it in.
15:38They have urgency, even though they're 6-8.
15:40Until they're completely out of it,
15:42they're going to be playing like they have something to play for.
15:45Miami as well.
15:46Miami's not out of it yet.
15:47They are.
15:48But 17 games in, they're still feeling that urgency.
15:53Atlanta just benched their quarterback
15:55because they need to do something.
15:57They're 7-7.
15:58They're not going to make the playoffs.
16:00But there's urgency.
16:02Only a game out of the division.
16:04Panics.
16:05No, fine, panics,
16:06and they would need Washington to fall down to have a wild card.
16:09But the whole idea is urgency.
16:11And this is where baseball's hurt as well.
16:14But baseball's a little different
16:15because you can go to a baseball game even if your team is 60 and 80,
16:21and you're in the sun and you're having a hot dog and a beer,
16:24and it's like whatever.
16:25You don't have to really invest.
16:27Like an NBA game, if you want to go to an NBA game,
16:30it's a lot of money.
16:31It's a lot of money.
16:32And if you want to watch an NBA game,
16:34it's like do I really want to watch this?
16:36You know, dribble, dribble, penetrate, pass, kick, kick, kick.
16:39Three.
16:40And I think that's part of it as well is the NBA has become largely very bland.
16:45It's five guys with their hands up around the arc.
16:48Robots.
16:49Waiting for the ball to come to them.
16:51And, you know, corner three.
16:53It's a make or miss league.
16:54And rebound.
16:55Let's go the other way.
16:56Dribble, dribble, penetrate, pass, pass, pass.
16:58Three.
16:59No variety.
17:00No variety and no urgency.
17:02Damn.
17:03That to me is the problem.
17:04It's among the problems.
17:06And then load management.
17:07It was another one where.
17:08They're all coming from the same place.
17:10Exactly.
17:11To me they're all the same subject.
17:12For money, right?
17:13Because these guys are making so much.
17:14They're a brand.
17:15Again, like.
17:16I can't go risk it.
17:17I think people just, there's like this thing that bleeds out to people.
17:22It's why we love watching athletes hustle.
17:25It's why we love watching athletes care.
17:28When they're pumping their fist or their whatever.
17:31Like, you know, the guy who just.
17:33Like Pete Rose, Charlie Hustle, whatever.
17:35I'm invested.
17:36Right?
17:37We love to see people care.
17:39And try.
17:41And put out that effort.
17:42And be maniacal.
17:43We love when.
17:44We love George Kittle.
17:45And people who, you know.
17:47They have this hair flying out of the back of the helmet.
17:49And people are grabbing it.
17:50It's urgency.
17:51The NBA too often.
17:53I mean, last week.
17:54LeBron's just like.
17:55I'm just not there.
17:57Like, where is he?
17:58We don't know.
17:59I'll be back at some point.
18:01What the hell?
18:02Why am I like.
18:03I'm supposed to get fired up.
18:05I don't even know where you are.
18:07I don't even know where you are.
18:09Like, that's just.
18:11That's all.
18:12It's just to me.
18:13It's messaging.
18:14It's messaging.
18:15Like, I was just thinking of Jimmy Butler.
18:17Why is Jimmy Butler going to opt out?
18:19Why is he going to opt out?
18:22He's making like 45 million next year.
18:24But he's going to opt out.
18:26Because he's got it like that.
18:27Because he wants to play.
18:29He wants to get paid for four more years.
18:33Get paid for four more years.
18:36And he can do that now.
18:39Like, if he would just play it out.
18:41Who knows what would happen after this year.
18:43The same with Paul George.
18:45Paul George didn't care about winning.
18:47Paul George cared about getting four more years at that money.
18:50And somebody did it.
18:51And somebody gave it to him.
18:53Paul's own team didn't do him.
18:54He thought they were going to do it.
18:55Exactly.
18:56It's all about staying in the game.
18:58All these guys, the incentive now isn't necessarily to win.
19:02It's to stay in this league of gluttony.
19:08And riches.
19:10And money.
19:11And fame.
19:12And gratuitousness.
19:15You look at the NFL versus all other sports.
19:20I don't want to bring hockey into it because those guys are kind of animals too.
19:25But you look at the NFL where the rosters are much bigger.
19:29There's many more players we've never heard of.
19:31Their careers are the shortest.
19:33And their guarantees are the least.
19:36Some don't have any.
19:37The game itself shows us on a weekly basis how hard they're trying.
19:45How bad they want it.
19:47You literally can't.
19:49People are fighting and having press conferences about it.
19:53AJ Brown and Jalen Hurts in the middle of a 10-game win streak.
19:57Over a girl.
19:58And they're pointing at this, that, the other.
20:00The desire, the effort, the blood, sweat, and tears is so obvious.
20:05I don't see that in any other sport.
20:07But hasn't it always been that way though?
20:10And then the ratings were good?
20:12I don't know.
20:13Because the NFL is savage.
20:14You're right.
20:15Sure, some of that is baked in.
20:17But I do feel like the NBA and Major League Baseball.
20:21Yes, it used to be.
20:23Even look at where steroids in baseball came from.
20:26Where that actually came from, it was more prevalent in the minor leagues.
20:31Because dudes, they were dying to get that contract.
20:35People wanted this, that, and the other.
20:37When you now have the top of your sport.
20:39And I don't want to sound jealous or anything.
20:41I'm not.
20:42But when the top of your sport, you sign one of these deals, you're done.
20:47Where's your desire?
20:49Shohei Ohtani, maybe he's special because he does show desire.
20:54But why?
20:56What is he now chasing?
20:58He's got a World Series and a billion dollars coming to him in 20 years.
21:01But his love of the game.
21:02And I'm thinking about my trout to the world.
21:04But not everybody's built that way.
21:06And those sports allow those who are not built that way to still succeed and participate.
21:13In the NFL, you're out.
21:16You are out.
21:17I think it's real.
21:18And one of the other things is, just go back, whatever.
21:21Magic and Bird.
21:22Well, they were flying charter.
21:24Nope.
21:25They were starting in nice hotels.
21:27They got paid a lot of money.
21:29But the lifestyle, by and large, wasn't extravagant.
21:33The lifestyle of these guys is the private plane.
21:38I got you, man.
21:39They get three meals a day.
21:40They get massages on the plane.
21:43Some football players used to have different jobs in the off-season.
21:47Back in the day.
21:49So you want to protect the lifestyle.
21:52But there's got to be a way.
21:54I don't know.
21:56How do you guarantee contracts?
21:58Because I'm so naive.
22:00I watch every sporting event thinking they're all in.
22:03Everybody's all in.
22:05And I guess by even having this conversation, you guys may laugh.
22:09It's why I appreciate Draymond Green on what you just talked about.
22:12At least I know he's invested.
22:14Yeah, the horse has left the barn.
22:16Because you're not going to go back to where the contracts aren't guaranteed in baseball or basketball.
22:22We could run down the list of top-paid players in the NBA, and half of them are bums.
22:29Or half of them don't really care about, like you're saying, Draymond Green.
22:33Say what you want about his anger development issues.
22:38But that man wants to win every game, every possession, every moment.
22:42And I appreciate it, too.
22:44For these GMs, as we talk about trade targets for the Warriors, you bring in Dennis Schroeder.
22:50And I do think that he's a guy who's out there trying to win.
22:54He's out there trying to win the possession.
22:56But the fact that he was so available, and we touched on it, for so cheap,
23:00he's still a black eye because of what the nets were.
23:03He was going to help us win.
23:05It's so funny when you know technically the Warriors got a gift from the basketball gods,
23:10but it's still...
23:12But we'll find out.
23:14Oh, you got a haircut.
23:16I have a haircut appointment at 2.30.
23:18Your hair looks great.
23:19I told him it did.
23:20It's too much.
23:21It's too much of it?
23:22I don't think so.
23:23I hear you.
23:24It's a 20-minute walk.
23:25You going to Brogan?
23:26No.
23:27No, you don't go there anymore, do you?
23:28No, I don't.
23:29Well, shout out the new place.
23:30Did they do a better one?
23:31Jackson Square Salon.
23:32There we go, Steiner.
23:33Lucia.
23:34Uh-oh.
23:3595-7.
23:36The game.
23:37Yeah, I'm a great clubs guy.
