00:58You'd be doing your sniff and doing the ha-ha and the skeet-skeet and inevitably, it would
01:04all go a certain way and you would at some point lose and feel the pain.
01:09You would feel the pain, but the pain was real and the joy that I felt along with thousands
01:14of people in the audience, it's something that I can't get over.
01:17So something about watching you lose and the way you wear it on your sleeve, it brings
01:22me joy.
01:23Now, as far as Willard goes, I can't have him win again because he goes from smug to
01:29faux-humble.
01:30It wasn't me, it was my fantasy players and I'm just out here with my head down trying
01:36to do the best I can, and Lucas, God forbid Lucas win, the commissioner, he can't win,
01:43so it's all about team-chickering.

10:33So next stop for the NBA is for them to do a whole bunch of, like,
10:37there'll be a Nerf shot.
10:39There'll be a pop-a-shot contest.
10:41And there'll be, like, a dribble relay.
10:44And there'll be all the nonsense that players actually want to do.
10:47There'll be a video game contest and all the rest of it.
10:49I'm irritated that the first time it won't be a game,
10:52even if there's no defense,
10:54since 2000, the last time we had the All-Star Game at Oracle,
10:57it'll be on our watch.
10:59And that's just nasty that it's not all one.
11:02And I get what Durant was saying, but I do like your rebuttal.
11:05Well, whose fault is it?
11:07Do you think that this will be more competitive because it's a game to 40
11:11and the four-team format will be three eight-player teams from the East and West
11:17and the best eight from the Futures game, the Rising Stars.
11:21So it'll be a four-team round-robin, games to 40.
11:25So you won't have to really go through the long slog of, you know,
11:29it's 148-141 after three quarters.
11:32It'll be a much quicker, like, okay, we're down 37-34.
11:36We can try to win this game.
11:38I do think that competition will be up.
11:41The format's a little weird,
11:42but I do think it's going to be much more befitting of a younger audience.
11:46Quicker resolution, faster games, new players.

12:26and basically play a pickup game tournament
12:28where there'll be a game up to 40.

12:52During all the social injustice and they had the bubble,
12:56I thought that rubbed a sector of the society maybe the wrong way
12:59and you lost fringe NBA fans.
13:02I'm not saying I have proof to back up that data.
13:04I don't think it helped.
13:06And some disagree, but that would be in my top three
13:10of why the ratings are going the other way
13:12or why people decided they don't want to watch.
13:15I just think collectively what I think is in content,
13:22anything that is creative, entertaining content,
13:25I think the audience takes its cues from the participants.
13:30And so we have been fed for a number of years now
13:34that this is not urgent.
13:36So, fine, it's not urgent.
13:39We shrug our shoulders.
13:41And so from the perspective of they don't play as much
13:45or they don't play as hard.
13:47Season doesn't mean anything.
13:48Or now we've got this ridiculous NBA cup
13:51where I'm supposed to be excited that millionaires are making more money.
13:54Whatever it is that you're doing,
13:57you're feeding us with the idea that you can't even motivate yourselves.
14:03So why the hell would we be motivated?
14:05It'd be like you two doing a radio show where you came in
14:09and right at 10 o'clock you're just like,

14:17Like if you guys did that,

14:35So we're taking our cues from them.

14:38and if I can put Mark's great explanation into just one sentence,

14:46And if you want to fix it, you can fix it.
14:49And the fix would be you divide the season into 20-game increments,
14:54and after 20 games,
14:56if you're the number one top-ranked team in your conference,
14:59you make the playoffs,
15:00and then after 20 games you start over.
15:02So if you are, for example, a middling team,
15:05like maybe Sacramento is a good example,
15:07where your first 20 didn't go great,
15:09okay, now you're 0-0, and you start again.
15:12So the winner of the four quadrants, the 20-game quadrants,
15:15you get automatic berths,
15:17and then the next four best overall records,
15:19you make the playoffs as well.
15:21The way they do it now with 10 teams get into something,
15:25it makes it so there's no urgency.
15:27And Mark used the word.
15:28It's urgency.
15:29NFL is urgent.
15:3017 games, it matters.
15:33The Niners are out of it, not really.
15:36The Niners can still make it in.
15:38They have urgency, even though they're 6-8.
15:40Until they're completely out of it,

16:32And if you want to watch an NBA game,
16:34it's like do I really want to watch this?

16:40And I think that's part of it as well is the NBA has become largely very bland.

19:15You look at the NFL versus all other sports.
19:20I don't want to bring hockey into it because those guys are kind of animals too.
19:25But you look at the NFL where the rosters are much bigger.
19:29There's many more players we've never heard of.
19:31Their careers are the shortest.
19:33And their guarantees are the least.
19:36Some don't have any.
19:37The game itself shows us on a weekly basis how hard they're trying.
19:45How bad they want it.
19:47You literally can't.
19:49People are fighting and having press conferences about it.
19:53AJ Brown and Jalen Hurts in the middle of a 10-game win streak.
19:57Over a girl.
19:58And they're pointing at this, that, the other.
20:00The desire, the effort, the blood, sweat, and tears is so obvious.
20:05I don't see that in any other sport.
20:07But hasn't it always been that way though?
20:10And then the ratings were good?
20:12I don't know.
20:13Because the NFL is savage.

20:15Sure, some of that is baked in.
20:17But I do feel like the NBA and Major League Baseball.

20:23Even look at where steroids in baseball came from.
20:26Where that actually came from, it was more prevalent in the minor leagues.
20:31Because dudes, they were dying to get that contract.
20:35People wanted this, that, and the other.
20:37When you now have the top of your sport.
20:39And I don't want to sound jealous or anything.

20:42But when the top of your sport, you sign one of these deals, you're done.
20:47Where's your desire?
20:49Shohei Ohtani, maybe he's special because he does show desire.
20:54But why?
20:56What is he now chasing?
20:58He's got a World Series and a billion dollars coming to him in 20 years.
21:01But his love of the game.
21:02And I'm thinking about my trout to the world.
21:04But not everybody's built that way.
21:06And those sports allow those who are not built that way to still succeed and participate.
21:13In the NFL, you're out.

21:17I think it's real.
21:18And one of the other things is, just go back, whatever.

21:25They were starting in nice hotels.
21:27They got paid a lot of money.
21:29But the lifestyle, by and large, wasn't extravagant.
21:33The lifestyle of these guys is the private plane.

21:40They get massages on the plane.
21:43Some football players used to have different jobs in the off-season.
21:47Back in the day.
21:49So you want to protect the lifestyle.
21:52But there's got to be a way.

21:56How do you guarantee contracts?
21:58Because I'm so naive.
22:00I watch every sporting event thinking they're all in.
22:03Everybody's all in.
22:05And I guess by even having this conversation, you guys may laugh.
22:09It's why I appreciate Draymond Green on what you just talked about.

22:16Because you're not going to go back to where the contracts aren't guaranteed in baseball or basketball.
