00:00120 to 117. Clay Thompson to Donchic. 10 seconds to go. Donchic down the left sideline in no hurry.
00:07Spin dribble. Guarded by Wiggins. Dribbles. Shoots a contested three. It's up and no good.
00:12Rebound melted. Ball game over. The Warriors have won.
00:16Now back to Steine and Guru. Take it away, Steine.
00:21You want to talk about tandems. Tim Roy on the call and Steph Curry on the court.
00:27Warriors 120, Mavericks 117. Let's welcome in Willard and Dibbs.
00:31It's a crossover and I mean, I'm going to be honest with you.
00:35You guys might not know this about me, but I can be a little bit skeptical about some things.
00:39No, not you. No, no.
00:41I texted Evan last night and I said, it worked. The night worked. The whole night.
00:49It all worked. It all worked.
00:52It was just all good. Clay saw last night that the fans will always feel a certain way about it.
01:00And that's separate from whatever happened with the Warriors.
01:04For sure. But the part that the Warriors, as powerful as they are, cannot control is whether or not the game then lives up to the hype.
01:12And it surpassed it. And it's the best thing.
01:16Dibbs, you know we've talked about this before.
01:19The best thing in sports is when something has overwhelming hype and then it gets met.
01:27It gets met by the actual product.
01:31Like LeBron James is always kind of my, that's the poster for him.
01:35Like unbelievable pre-hype and then you're like, oh, that hype was warranted.
01:42Last night was another one of those nights.
01:44If it were a movie last night.
01:47Too nice to sleep on, Brock.
01:49Oh, there we go.
01:51Dibbs, I'm looking at you because our part did not meet the hype.
01:53Anyway, go ahead.
01:55If last night was a movie, it would have won an Oscar.
01:57I mean, the script was perfect.
01:59Everything from the 400 employees.
02:01And I know you don't like the remixes.
02:03I told Steini, he'd been on fire.
02:07I wanted words at the beginning.
02:09I wanted Clay to talk and Curry and Willard to speak.
02:11You wanted him to take the mic from Curry.
02:14We found out about 5 o'clock wasn't going to happen.
02:16The energy, the competitiveness at that spot.
02:20I think Steph and Clay were listening to your show.
02:22And I'm like, how about if neither of us talk for God's sake.
02:24When you text me, I said, whoa.
02:26This guy wants Clay to talk.
02:28How about nobody talk?
02:30Clay would like put an end to that.
02:32Cut the microphones.
02:34We're playing ball tonight.
02:36Dude, it was incredible.
02:38And we were in the building.
02:40There were no words that could be said pre-game that would have matched what happened.
02:43They did the four Dallas starters.
02:45And then they get ready for Clay.
02:47The video hits.
02:49And then it's Clay Thompson.
02:51And he comes out.
02:53And it's 18,000 hats flapping.
02:55And Clay had the moment.
02:57And he had a second moment.
02:59And then a third moment.
03:01And after that, he realized, we got basketball.
03:03And so he kind of waved it all off.
03:05And he went right into the huddle.
03:07And it was cool.
03:09And then you dim the lights.
03:12And Clay's going to post up Steph.
03:14Clay's going to post up Steph.
03:16Which is like, yes, let's get right to it.
03:18And Steph fouled him, I guess.
03:20We were on the other end of the arena.
03:22Steph fouled an idiot too.
03:24He was a stupid foul.
03:26Yes, it was.
03:28But that was great.
03:30And Clay on a post up.
03:32And Clay actually played, I thought, really well.
03:34And you can look at his defense.
03:36His defense is what it is at this point.
03:38But those two dagger threes.
03:40It was his moment.
03:42And he's doing the shimmy.
03:44And they've got the lead.
03:46And all of us collectively were like, oh my god.
03:48He's going to have the last laugh.
03:50In the age of social media, we fall into the trap of lip reading.
03:52We know this.
03:54Ever since Garoppolo apparently said, your plays stink, Kyle.
03:56It was Kevin Durant saying, that's why I'm out of here.
03:58That's why I'm out.
04:00And so sometimes we're right.
04:02And sometimes we're wrong.
04:04I just want to say this.
04:06I've never actually wanted to know
04:09what someone was saying more than I want to know
04:11what Steph was saying when he hit the 993.
04:13This is my, I can't say the rest.
04:15Well, I think he was saying.
04:17Hang on.
04:19Because it was a lot, Willard.
04:21This is my, I saw it.
04:23This is my number two dibs.
04:25My lip reading, which is far from perfect.
04:27You better stay here.
04:29You better stay here.
04:31We got that now.
04:33Carter is telling.
04:35And what I love is he said he's going to look at the.
04:38He said, whatever, I blacked out.
04:40Who's that to you better stay here.
04:42That's what he and I were.
04:44Well, he's gone.
04:46No, but this is trash talk.
04:48It's not reality.
04:50Like they were.
04:52I mean, if you were lucky enough to be that close.
04:54Well, they were jawing at each other all night long.
04:56Clay shimmied.
04:58So Steph is.
05:00Steph is free to say whatever he wants.
05:02And wouldn't that be something
05:04that you would want to do?
05:07Something that you would say in that moment.
05:09You want to win, you better stay here.
05:11And he pulls out the jersey
05:13and showing Golden State.
05:15And then it's pound, pound, pound.
05:17And I love those jerseys, by the way.
05:19I do too.
05:21Those are super clean.
05:23But the fact that he pulled that out
05:25and pointed to it like it's not.
05:27Yeah, it's your night.
05:29And the captain hats are cool,
05:31but it's Golden State.
05:33And this is my blank.
05:36You are the king of the night-night.
05:38And I mean, I only put them up for.
05:40And you can night-night all you want
05:42as long as you don't night-night
05:44and then you get woken up.
05:46But they did hold on and they won.
05:48But just a spectacular game.
05:50And I told Mark before the game started,
05:52I said, that's what I want.
05:54I want a good night from Clay.
05:56I want a night-night from Steph.
05:58I want a competitive game.
06:00And each team had like three or four runs.
06:02It was like, oh, the Warriors.
06:05It's Dallas again.
06:07Tremont missed a layup.
06:09I was like, oh boy, that might be the play.
06:11Tremont's just been incredible.
06:13Were they down?
06:15I think down seven.
06:17Four minutes to go.
06:19And Luka falling down trying to post up.
06:21Luka falling down.
06:23Time out.
06:25Like, dude.
06:27Luka is the least enjoyable star.
06:29I've been trying to fight for him.
06:31But you understand his talent offensively.
06:34He's an absolute.
06:36He's brilliant.
06:38But he's also a bull in a china shop.
06:40And you're just like, dude.
06:42You can't.
06:44Or you can.
06:46You can't just shove people out of the way and lay it in.
06:48He's a boar in a china shop.
06:50Dribble, dribble.
06:52Sluff, sluff.
06:54Oh, it's another bucket.
06:56I thought about what Michael told us.
06:58I was watching them play.
07:00Which is the brand of basketball.
07:03I don't know if y'all caught this.
07:05Michael Thompson last night.
07:07They played at that point ten basketball games.
07:09Clay as a Maverick.
07:11Before last night's game.
07:13And Michael is already publicly being like,
07:15I like the way the Warriors play basketball.
07:17He opened up with you guys more yesterday
07:19than he had the times you had him on
07:21trying to get the information.
07:23Yeah, he's like, Clay.
07:25He's got to get used to standing around sometimes
07:27because of these ball dominant guys.
07:29And so it was top of mind as I'm watching that game.
07:31My God, the Warriors look like fireflies.
07:33It's incredible, Miller.
07:35They look like, if you're a Top Gun fan,
07:37they look like those MiG-28s
07:39that are just flying around in circles.
07:41It is gorgeous when it works.
07:43When it stalls.
07:45It stalled a little bit last night.
07:47Hey, second quarter, I'm talking to you.
07:49Yeah, second unit.
07:51It can get really wobbly out there.
07:53But when it's working,
07:55my God is it beautiful.
07:57Dallas was out of gas.
07:59Because the Warriors just come at you.
08:01And we'll get into the weeds of the overall game
08:03in the 48 minutes,
08:05but I liked what I saw from Kaminga
08:07in that he's really kind of letting it come to him
08:09a little bit. He's not pressing.
08:11And even in that first stint, second quarter,
08:13where the second unit did almost nothing,
08:15he wasn't trying to do too much.
08:17And then in the second half,
08:19he kind of had some opportunities,
08:21hit a three, and he kind of warmed into the game.
08:23There was one possession.
08:25And I think I was still sitting with you.
08:27No, just the ball stopped.
08:29And Jonathan kind of was like,
08:31how about left? How about right?
08:33How about if I turn around?
08:35And we literally said it out loud.
08:37I'm like, Jonathan, Jonathan.
08:39And then he just ran to the baseline
08:41and coughed the ball up.
08:43Move the ball.
08:45Keep the ball moving.
08:47You want a Mavericks jersey?
08:49You can have one, and then you can go dribble, dribble, dribble.
08:51But you don't have a Mavericks jersey.
08:53Move the ball.
08:55Yeah, I'm looking. It was
08:57112-105
08:59with four minutes left.
09:01Man.
09:03And then Curry hit a three to make it 112-108.
09:05I thought a big, big
09:07call or play of the game
09:09was the Gafford
09:11charge, where
09:13Draymond seemed to have a foot in the
09:15semicircle, but they didn't have a challenge.
09:17And so they couldn't review it.
09:19And the next thing you know, Steph comes down, boom.
09:21It's 114-113.
09:23And they didn't have a challenge? Yes.
09:25Because Luka Krajic,
09:27with 10 minutes to go in the fourth,
09:29twirled his little finger on a call
09:31that was not going to go his way.
09:33And I saw it. We were on the opposite end of the floor.
09:35You were in the Luka's seat,
09:37and I was up top with Grandy,
09:39getting absolutely berated by a listener
09:41over the fact that my picks stink.
09:43Oh my God.
09:45If I had a dollar for each person
09:47who came up to me,
09:49it might fade to dibble.
09:51You gotta come up with a stock answer for that.
09:53Just look at people and say,
09:55you're welcome. No, the stock answer is
09:57I'm about to bounce back,
09:59and you're all going to regret it.
10:01No, the segment is called Fade the Dibbers.
10:03Bay Area, it's Steve Kerr.
10:05Dibbs, your picks stink.
10:07Right, just look.
10:09There's a bunch of them.
10:11Look at them and go, you're welcome.
10:13Play the Kuminga while you're at it.
10:15You won't. This is my favorite.
10:17That and the buddy healed.
10:19Your pick stinks.
10:21Wow, man.
10:23That is great.
10:25Play the buddy healed.
10:27If Buddy even has one, I can't even remember.
10:29Buddy's pretty nice. It's hard to get him to say so.
10:31Buddy healed. You're listening to
10:33Willoughby Dibbs on 95.7,
10:35the game. Hey, Dibbs, your picks stink.
10:39I don't mean to make this about me,
10:41but the one that hurts the most, Kavon Looney.
10:43A guy who I...
10:45And he's got some vitriol in him.
10:47And he's coming on the show tomorrow.
10:49Maybe. I'm going to have to ask him
10:51about this. Bay Area, it's Kavon
10:53Looney. Hey, Dibbs, your picks
10:55stink.
10:57It's like
10:59Kavon Looney. If he's going to do
11:01a job, he's going to do it right.
11:03Anyway, I was at
11:05the opposite end of the arena during that
11:07Luka Doncic and I saw him go twirl, twirl,
11:09twirl, and I'm thinking, Jason Kidd,
11:11don't do it. They did it Sunday
11:13against Denver and it cost them the game
11:15Justin Luka. Yes.
11:17It wasn't a foul and he clearly got the
11:19dude on the arm. And this was clear too.
11:21I'm so glad you're bringing this up because
11:23I leaned over to Evan and this was amazing.
11:25It's very Draymond-esque,
11:27but even more,
11:29Luka casually
11:31twirls the finger and
11:33before he's even done twirling,
11:35the whole team is walking off the floor.
11:37Right, they know. It's not like Jason
11:39Kidd even had the option to be like,
11:41ah, maybe not. Luka was
11:43like, whoop, it was such a power play.
11:45Man. It was like, twirl, we're
11:47out and the green light came on
11:49and I'm like, oh my god, did you see
11:51the juice that this man has
11:53on that sideline? It was
11:55incredible and you're right, we knew right away,
11:57that's not getting overturned. It was like a Food
11:59Network show. Wow. Chopped.
12:01Now that's a four. Thank you.
12:03Because you can see clearly in the replay
12:05that it was a total chop.
12:07I've been strong with this and it's
12:09Warriors on mine all day,
12:11our team, but I've been telling
12:13you this on What's Bugging You,
12:15Fridays at 2, Willard,
12:17you shouldn't have to play backgammon
12:19or checkers to have a bonus
12:21challenge. We got the technology.
12:23If it's crunch time,
12:25let's go get it right. It shouldn't
12:27have been on the charge or the
12:29block with Draymond. They should be
12:31able to just go look at it to
12:33get it right. It shouldn't be because
12:35you lost two in a year and they put up J. Kidd,
12:37I think he's two for ten this year on Challenges.
12:39Yeah, because he's listening to Luca.
12:41Dude, it shouldn't be. Just get it right.
12:43Yeah, I hear you.
12:45My gripe has always been
12:47that you lose.
12:49In some sports, you lose a challenge
12:51even when you're right.
12:53Now, this one didn't bug me
12:55because you challenged. You were wrong.
12:57But if you challenge and you were right,
12:59how do you lose your challenge?
13:01That's the unusual.
13:03Yeah.
13:05Anyway, and you watch Steve Kerr
13:07and all coaches throughout the game.
13:09You see plays where you're like,
13:11whoops, ref messed up on that one
13:13but he's not going to challenge because
13:15it's not worth it. It's not worth it
13:17for a possession late in the
13:19second quarter because you
13:21need to hold on to it. We want the
13:23truth, Steve. Yeah, you know what we want, Goo?
13:25Let's just review all scoring plays
13:27then in the NBA. We don't want that.
13:29No, that's kind of what you're saying.
13:31Crunch time. Last three minutes
13:33of five minutes of a game.
13:35Five minutes of a game?
13:37One minute?
13:39Twenty-seven seconds.
13:41There are so many of these plays that are either
13:43bang, bang, Niner Gang
13:45or they're
13:47touchy and it's
13:49close and so if we're going to review it,
13:51by rule, if somebody
13:53touches the arm of another player,
13:55that's a foul, right?
13:57There's a certain amount, I think, that we have
13:59to give to referees.
14:01Where do you draw the line?
14:03Where do you draw the line in letting these three human beings
14:05and I tweeted this out yesterday.
14:07Yesterday was not about Clay Thompson.
14:09It was about Scott Foster.
14:11Scott's back. Scott's back, baby.
14:13I got butterflies
14:15when I saw that game going away.
14:17This is like the stars are really out
14:19tonight. Totally.
14:21I didn't want a
14:23captain's hat. I wanted a tight
14:25fitting gray 48
14:27ref jersey is what I wanted. Harvard Illegal.
14:29You're listening to 95.7 The Game.
14:31ZFM at HD1 San Francisco.
14:33Always live on the free Odyssey app.
14:35Twitch and YouTube powered by First NorCal.
14:37Credit you.
14:39That's a damn four right there.
14:41That's you doing you and you nailed it.
14:43That's one of my favorites.
14:45There'll never be another first time
14:47he's ever coming back from the 400.
14:49Who do you think came up with that? You guys might
14:51know. You know what? We're all
14:53going to greet Clay when he walks in the
14:55400. That put him
14:57in a mood to where it was like,
14:59I should have got on the mic. I'm not saying he thought
15:01that, but that's when it was like,
15:03damn. So, Goo,
15:05do you realize that
15:07the one thing they made sure
15:09wouldn't happen
15:11was what you wanted
15:13to happen? Like that's the
15:15one thing they went out of their
15:17way to make sure
15:19didn't happen. Well, Clay did that.
15:21Right. But I'm not mad at
15:23Clay. That was his Bobby Brown. That was his prerogative.
15:25Yeah, but it's a
15:27loss on your ledger. It's a big one.
15:29See, I don't live my life like that.
15:31Had they got on the mic,
15:33I'd run around here like,
15:35my life changed.
15:37Stiney, I nailed
15:39it yesterday. I was in there. I almost
15:41got emotional. The streets say you almost got
15:43emotional when they had the video thing up.
15:45Well, I was emotional before thinking
15:47about it, and I'm looking at the sign
15:49that's over your left shoulder, and for the YouTube
15:51audience, you can see it.
15:53By the end of the show, Stiney,
15:55there's a line of like 30 people
15:57waiting to sign this thank you.
15:59I'm telling you, and part of it is
16:01the human nature of, oh my God, there's people
16:03in line. It's got to be pretty cool. I need
16:05to do this. The Lucas
16:07Alexander created Clay
16:09Carnival was awesome.
16:11Director of sports. And our PD, our
16:13program director, brand manager,
16:15Matt Nahegian, who had
16:17people line up to sign
16:19the Clay Thompson giant sign, that
16:21was awesome. The whole thing was incredible, and yeah,
16:23I was getting a little bit emotional thinking about
16:25Clay's time here,
16:27and when he came out, and you saw
16:29all the captain's hats, and you saw all the
16:31emotion, that was all great,
16:33and it was kind of fun watching the
16:35game in the arena, Stiney, because Clay
16:37hit his first three, and the crowd
16:39went wild, and with every successive
16:41Clay success,
16:43the crowd got a little bit quieter,
16:45and you got to a point where Clay threw up
16:47an air ball, and they were chanting air ball.
16:49Yeah, I saw that.
16:51The crowd definitely started in a
16:53certain way, and then
16:55there was that moment of like, oh snap,
16:57they might lose to this team. No,
16:59no, no, he's now a Maverick.
17:01That's kind of what I was getting at before the
17:03game. Like, I wonder, and
17:05it's one thing in the first half, maybe something
17:07different in the second half, when the ball
17:09came out of Clay Thompson's hands,
17:11were you rooting for it to
17:13go in? Oh, I was. You were.
17:15Yeah, early. Until the end.
17:17I was like, oh boy. I wanted all air
17:19balls.
17:21That's one characteristically
17:23mean-spirited for you. I want you to hit the top
17:25of the backboard. But I said to you guys, I wanted them
17:27to have a good game, 35 maybe.
17:29I know, and it happened, but look what it
17:31took. Yeah.
17:33I thought he hit the dagger. This was an
17:35absolute hair away from being
17:37a loss. And what would he have done?
17:39And look at Steph, like, I am
17:41so focused on Steph's outburst.
17:43No, it's incredible. That reaction
17:45at the end of the day, that tells
17:47you, to me, everything
17:49about this.
17:51This was not like, oh
17:53yay, celebration.
17:55This was bleep you, and bleep you
17:57too, and with love.
17:59When you heard Draymond too in the postgame,
18:01like, I don't give a crap about any
18:03hat tip. You know, if he takes
18:05me on his boat in the summer, I'll tip my cap,
18:07but not tonight. And he watched
18:09the video tribute before the game.
18:11That was amazing. That way he could come out and be
18:13game face Draymond, which I thought was awesome.
18:15Lovely Christy was watching on TV.
18:17She texted right away. She goes, ooh,
18:19Steph didn't like all that attention
18:21that Klay got.
18:23And I, like, I don't
18:25tell the lovely Christy he was about to get
18:27on the mic and do more.
18:29I would tell her that it's EPMD.
18:31It's strictly business. Well, that's a fine.
18:33Thank you. That's the point.
18:35That's the point. Like, I get
18:37what both of you are saying.
18:39Steph would have been in the planning
18:41commission for putting together
18:43what they would do, but then
18:45walked home from the meeting and went,
18:47I must show every
18:49freaking body who's focused
18:51whose house
18:53this is.
18:55Like, that was an outburst.
18:57It was, man.
18:59That was a release of energy
19:01that I don't mean forever.
19:03How many times
19:05in his career have you seen that
19:07kind of an emotional outburst
19:09from Stephen Curry? You've heard, you've seen it
19:11a few times, like the I'm back.
19:13I'm him moment.
19:15There was a mouthpiece throw that was
19:17an outburst of a different sort of
19:19there was the NBA
19:21championship where he collapsed
19:23to the floor after game six
19:25and wept. So we've seen some
19:27outbursts, but not in a
19:29regular season game in November.
19:31This is a top five emotional
19:33outburst. Top ten for sure. Yeah.
19:35There was one. Was it last year?
19:37The year before where he got
19:39in front of the team during a timeout and he was like,
19:41we got to do this and Wiggins
19:43was there and I feel like it was
19:45down at the end of the night
19:47at the but anyway
19:49and also last year with Draymond when Draymond
19:51got when Draymond
19:53never forget that he like
19:55covered his face because he was so
19:57like overcome by the emotion.
19:59I do think the crowd turned last night
20:01against clay after that
20:03second three in the shimmy shake.
20:05At that moment, all of us in the crowd
20:07realized, okay, clay
20:09great back to back threes shimmy
20:11shake. Welcome home. We need
20:13to go with this. What did you think
20:15of it? He knows better. Like
20:17he knows to leave that alone.
20:19Great. And
20:21again, I couldn't tell you what it looked like
20:23on TV or where
20:25your seats were. If you're lucky enough to be there
20:27last night or or whatever, but
20:29I don't think any of
20:31those three made any buckets
20:33last night where they didn't immediately
20:35focus their attention on
20:37the other one. Can't you understand
20:39that? That's ball.
20:41That's personal brotherhood.
20:43That's ball and brotherhood.
20:45You chose to go live with mom
20:47or there's some stuff there.
20:49I love you.
20:51I love you, but
20:53eat it. We're the Warriors
20:55and this is our building.
20:57You're not on our team anymore.
20:59Dad, I guess
21:01there were a few people that called today that thought
21:03the clay shimmy was like out of bounds
21:05and I was like, that's gamesmanship.
21:07That's ball.
21:09That's how you do it.
21:11Steph was really mad.
21:13Of course not. Clay went in the locker room when it was
21:15over. Of course.
21:17Clay went in their locker room when it was over.
21:19That's what I mean.
21:21He said
21:23Clay probably came here thinking
21:25I'm mad at the organization but not
21:27my teammates and had everybody clumped
21:29in one and then when he saw the greeting
21:31kind of was able to compartmentalize
21:33like those are my dudes and
21:35when I heard he went after the game, he was
21:37hugging everybody. I was like, that's a moment.
21:39But then when I found out he went into the locker room
21:41like they're good, man.
21:43I wonder. It's too soon
21:45for this because they've played 11 basketball
21:47games and I am partially again
21:49pulling that comment that Michael
21:51made to us yesterday.
21:53I wonder if Clay
21:55is not happy.
21:57Will arrive at a Durant spot
21:59someday where he's like, huh.
22:01Turns out what I was searching
22:03for isn't actually out there.
22:05I wonder. It gets too soon for us
22:07to even say that.
22:09It's 11 basketball games but
22:11ball dominant, two of them
22:13stand in the corner, wait for the ball.
22:15If the team did ask you to change your role, Durant
22:17would have always been one of the guys
22:19starting. So Clay from that
22:21perspective, ego hit or hurt.
22:23If they did, Clay,
22:25Kurt told him at breakfast or wherever,
22:27I envision you coming back off the bench.
22:29That kind of like, I'm out of here.
22:31I just mean playing with the Mavericks.
22:33Are you actually getting
22:35fulfillment out of that?
22:37You're going to get shots though.
22:39He's just in the corner. I'm like, that's easier.
22:41They're coming to you.
22:43I don't know if that's what he wants.
22:45His ex-team is 9-2.
22:47No doubt. His current team is
22:49under 500. Pippen went to Houston
22:51for a year. Strike shortened.
22:53He went to Portland and I believe he went
22:55to at least one or two other destinations.
22:57Jordan was gone too though.
22:59Let me see what they're doing in Chicago.
23:01Business was done.
23:03Tony Parker became a Charlotte Hornet.
23:05All these other
23:07greats who did it with one team
23:09and then went elsewhere, most of them
23:11ended up chasing it.
23:13LeBron's on a different level.
23:15He found it. He found it in multiple places.
23:17He found it in Miami. He found it back
23:19in Cleveland. He found it in L.A.
23:21That's different, but Clay
23:23may wind up chasing it
23:25for the rest of his career.
23:27You guys are going to have a fun show today.
23:29We did. There's a lot to talk about.
23:31Boy, 9-2.
23:33His team's off to a great start.
23:35Tim Kalkami and
23:37Tim Roy.
23:39Anybody else who might be named Tim is welcome
23:41on the show today.
23:43Don't go anywhere. Keep it locked.
23:45Keep it locked and loaded
23:47on 95.7 The Game.
