00:00The first vice-president of the Venezuelan United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Diosdado
00:14Cabello, emphasized that the recent sanctions imposed by Canada against Venezuelan officials
00:19represent nothing more than a failure.
00:24In Ecuador, the government said that this Thursday will be the last day without electricity
00:29after almost three months of power-outages.
00:36In the early hours of Thursday morning, the armed forces of Yemen launched several short-range
00:41ballistic missiles in the direction of the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, which caused the
00:46activation of alarms in the region.
00:53Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:59In Venezuela, the first vice-president of the United Socialist Party, Diosdado Cabello,
01:05emphasized that the recent sanctions imposed by Canada against Venezuelan officials represent
01:10nothing more than a failure.
01:17Canada imposes new sanctions against Venezuelan officials.
01:24Canada is lagging behind because they only do what the government of the United States
01:32tells them to do.
01:34The U.S. government sneezes and then Canada gets nervous.
01:41They don't realize that it has really failed, the method has failed.
01:49Cabello also condemned the U.S. Embassy's questioning of Venezuela's constitutionality,
01:54considering that the U.S. appointed an illegitimate president in the country and tried to overturn
02:00the constitution.
02:07According to the U.S. Embassy, January 10 is the deadline for Nicolás Maduro.
02:15Refusing a democratic transition, they say, will be a definitive rupture with the constitutional
02:22order and will plunge Venezuela into an even deeper crisis.
02:27It is funny when they talk about the constitution in Venezuela, when they appointed a president
02:34here and tried to tear that constitution to shreds.
02:40And they'd still approve a portrait to that man.
02:45And they, they came up with a horrible thing called transitional statute, which derogates
02:52the constitution.
02:54You look in that constitution to see if a statute can derogate it.
03:00And it does not appear anywhere.
03:08Last minute.
03:09Alberto Rodnews posted a last-minute note from the European press that says the European
03:16Union is preparing more sanctions against Nicolás Maduro for lack of democratic transition
03:24in Venezuela.
03:26Remember that we are sanctioned.
03:28You don't need to sanction us again.
03:30You will make a fool of yourselves.
03:33Yes, because they might try to do it.
03:36What happens is that the United States has taken some new sanctions and they go after
03:43the United States.
03:45They do whatever the United States government says.
03:48They don't even think that the people who decided to impose the sanctions are going
03:53to leave.
03:54Ten days after Nicolás Maduro and his people are sworn in, the president of the United
04:01States is sworn in.
04:03Exactly ten days later.
04:07Here it is January 10 and there it is January 20.
04:12So they don't know what to do because they depend on the United States.
04:17On the other hand, Cabello pointed out that what happened in Venezuela on July 29th after
04:22the elections had already been predicted by Commander Hugo Chávez, who always feared
04:27the intentions of the extreme right.
04:30At that time, Chávez showed his concern and kept warning us.
04:39They were going to kill the revolutionaries.
04:42Wasn't that what they did?
04:43And wasn't that what they did on the 29th?
04:46Didn't they look for the Venezuelan women to kill?
04:49And they ended up killing two women?
04:51And they did it in a very mean way, with hatred, as they know how to do.
04:56And why did they do it?
04:57To spread fear.
04:59Then came the persecution.
05:01Then came the persecution of anyone who was a Chavista.
05:05But they didn't count on the sharpness of the Chavistas.
05:09This happened on day 29.
05:11And on day 30, we were...
05:15We stay in Venezuela.
05:16The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean informed on Wednesday that
05:22Venezuela leads economic growth in the Latin American region.
05:26The report indicates an increase in Venezuelan GDP of 6.2% by 2024, followed by South American
05:34nations such as Paraguay, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay.
05:38Meanwhile, at the opposite extreme are Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia.
05:43Central American nations showed less notable figures, with the Dominican Republic, Costa
05:48Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras standing out.
05:51Meanwhile, in the English-speaking Caribbean, the economy with the best record was Guyana.
05:57Regional growth in the year up to date is expected to be 2.2%, and in 2025 it is projected
06:04at 2.4%.
06:10Members of various social organizations gathered in the Murillo Square of Bolivia to celebrate
06:17the day of the democratic and cultural revolution.
06:20In celebration of the first electoral victory of the Movement to Socialism, MAS, in 2005,
06:27groups of citizens gathered in La Paz City, the Bolivian capital.
06:31The date commemorates the social and historical struggles of the former indigenous and intercultural
06:37organizations for a better future.
06:39This great mobilization takes place within the framework of a call made by the MAS's
06:45Board of Directors to the Bolivian people.

07:15Welcome back to From the South.
07:22In Ecuador, the government said that this Thursday would be the last day without electricity
07:27after almost three months of power outages.
07:30A second generation ship is expected to arrive on the shores of Guayaquil this Thursday to
07:36help generate electricity.
07:38Since September 23rd of this year, Ecuador has been facing prolonged blackouts that have
07:43lasted up to 14 hours a day in the midst of the drought.
07:47In this context, questions have been raised about the government's lack of timely action
07:51to address the situation.
07:58In Mexico, Mexican women, surging mothers and relatives of femicide victims began a
08:03hunger strike in front of the Chiapas State Government building on Wednesday, demanding
08:08justice for the disappeared.
08:10The 12 leaders of the group began an indefinite hunger strike until the governor and the attorney
08:16general responded to their demands for such injustice.
08:19In a symbolic act of protest, the members of the collective Mothers in Resistance positioned
08:24themselves in front of the government with banners, posters, a coffin with photos of
08:29the disappeared women and men.
08:31The executive secretariat of the National Public Security System reported that between
08:36January and October 2024, 667 femicides were registered in Mexico, 21 of which occurred
08:44in Chiapas.
09:06Peru's National Civil Defence Institute reported on Wednesday that 182 districts in
09:13the highlands are at risk of being affected by landslides due to possible heavy rains.
09:19According to the authorities, the southern department of Ayacucho has the highest number
09:23of districts at very high risk.
09:25In addition, another 83 districts in the same regions are at high risk of being affected.
09:31In view of this situation, the civil defence urged local and regional authorities to check
09:36the evacuation routes are clear as well as the availability of health centres, fire departments
09:43and police stations in their jurisdictions.
09:46It also recommended the population to protect and reinforce the roofs of their homes.
09:57A Royal Australian Air Force plane arrived on the island of Vanuatu, carrying aid packages
10:03and personnel to assist in the rescue of people in that South Pacific nation after
10:08being hit by a violent earthquake.
10:10After unloading the cargo, the airplane transported Australian citizens from the capital port
10:16of Bella and tourists back to Australia.
10:20The earthquake left over 200 people injured and nine dead at the central hospital.
10:25In addition, after the severe damage caused by the quake to the reservoirs, the capital
10:30city was left without water supplies.
10:33The earthquake had a depth of 57 kilometres and its epicentre was 30 kilometres west
10:38of the capital of Vanuatu, where around 330,000 people inhabit in a group of 80 islands.
10:51The French government declared Wednesday a state of exceptional natural calamity in the
10:56Maori archipelago after the passage of Cyclone Jiro, which left 31 dead and 45 injured.
11:04On the ex-account, the Ministry of Overseas announced the measure to allow a faster and
11:09more efficient management of the crisis and facilitate pursuing emergency measures.
11:14The Minister in charge, François-Noël Buffet, stressed the need to mobilise all resources
11:19to help and support nationals in this terrible experience.
11:23In addition to the injured and deaths, Australia is reported significant damage to infrastructure
11:29as well as failures in electricity communications and internet services.
11:36So, the main pathologies depend on the chronology.
11:45Immediately after the wind stopped, we had to receive victims in absolute emergency,
11:49sometimes dead people.
11:51Days after the event, we have more medical pathologies, chronic diseases that do not
11:56have access to care and treatment.
11:59And this is what is really coming to the forefront, requiring the reorganisation of the entire hospital.
12:08In France, the Avignon court sentenced French citizen Dominique Pellicott to 20 years in
12:14prison for rape and chemical sedation of his former wife Giselle Pellicott, along with
12:1950 men he had urged to sexually assault her for 10 years.
12:24The verdicts issued Thursday against the 55 defendants ranged from 3 to 20 years in prison,
12:31sentencing the victim's former husband, Dominique, to the highest penalty, although
12:35after fulfilling two-thirds in prison, he could opt for probation.
12:41It is worth to remark that the defendants with lesser punishments shall not be in prison
12:46and although all of them were charged with different crimes, the sentences handed down
12:51were less than what the prosecution requested.

13:37Welcome back to From the South.
13:38In Russia, President Vladimir Putin held a press conference with a national and foreign
13:43journalist to give an assessment of the results achieved by his government during the year
13:482024.
13:50The head of state commented that in the context of the conflict against Ukraine, the situation
13:55is changing, dramatically assuring that every day the Russian fighters are recovering square
14:00kilometers of territory.
14:02On the other hand, Putin said he doesn't know whether the West understood correctly
14:06the recent changes in the Russian Federation's nuclear doctrine.
14:10This is after a change that states that a massive attack on the country, including with
14:15cruise missiles and drones, could generate a nuclear response.
14:18On the other hand, the President explained that the Russian economy has remained stable,
14:23despite external threats growing by approximately 8% in the last two years.
14:35This is just about a formal and legal issue.
14:38They can arrange it as they please it inside Ukraine.
14:41But if we ever get to the point of signing the agreements, we will be able to sign only
14:45with the legitimate representatives of authorities.
14:50Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that Israel's occupation of Syrian territories
14:55and sending more troops is unbearable.
15:01Russia condemns the occupation of any Syrian territory.
15:04Our position on this is obvious and is not subject to change.
15:08We hope that someday Israel will withdraw from the territories of Syria.
15:12But now it is bringing there more troops.
15:17The Russian head of state highlighted that the BRICS is not only a platform to confront
15:21the West, but an organization where the member countries collaborate while mutually respecting
15:27their interests.
15:31The BRICS group is not only a tool to counteract the West.
15:34We are not working against anyone.
15:36We are working for our interests, for the BRICS member countries' interests.
15:40We are not creating any confrontational agenda within the framework of the BRICS.
15:44In the early hours of Thursday morning, the Armed Forces of Yemen launched several short-range
16:09ballistic missiles in the direction of the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, which caused the
16:14activation of alarms in the region.
16:16According to al-Jazeera news networks, the explosions were heard in the center of occupied
16:21Palestine and the cities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, causing about one million Israelis to head
16:26for bomb shelters.
16:28According to several sources, one of the missiles hit the Ramad Ofal airbase.
16:33In support of the Palestinian population, the Yemeni army continued its offensive against
16:38Israeli targets in the occupied Palestinian territories, in addition to Israeli-linked
16:43ships in the Red Sea.
16:49In Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the international community to press
16:55Israel for respecting the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, while showing his support for
17:00the Syrian people at this harsh time for the region.
17:03On an official ceremony, the Turkish head of state warmly welcomed the Prime Minister
17:07of Lebanon, Najib Mikati, expressing his solidarity with the Lebanese situation.
17:13Likewise, on a press briefing, Erdogan stated that both nations will collaborate to support
17:18Syria, his neighboring country.
17:20Meanwhile, the Lebanese Prime Minister underscored his country continues to suffer the aftermath
17:26of the Israeli aggressive offensive.
17:28On the issue of Syria, Mikati asserted that the joint work with the Turkish government
17:33will aim at ensuring the strength of relations among the three countries, grounded on mutual
17:39respect and good neighborliness.
17:59A fire set at a coffee shop in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Wednesday night has left 11 people dead,
18:05while the police detained a suspect.
18:08Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security detailed that the blaze started late Wednesday night
18:13at a three-story establishment in the capital.
18:16The authorities reported that according to initial investigations, the fire started after
18:21an argument had taken place.
18:23A man already confessed having used gasoline to spread the flames on the first floor of
18:28the premises and the staff of the cafeteria.
18:31In this context, 11 people lost their lives, while seven were injured.
18:36Reports indicate that the police will charge the arrested suspect with murder.
18:49Around five to six motorbikes were burning fiercely, blocking the entrance.
18:54About 15 minutes later, I think we saw one person using the flash of a mobile phone on
18:59the balcony of the third floor.
19:01Then we knew that there were some survivors inside.
19:05Fifteen minutes later when the fire truck arrived, they used the stairs to get people out.
