A wet start to the day across much of the country, with a frontal system also bringing some strong winds, especially to northwest areas where coastal gales can be expected. Temperatures milder in the south, average for the time of year further north but feeling chilly in the wind. The strong winds with heavy downpours will continue across much of the country, with some hill snow possible in Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England on Saturday evening. A yellow wind warning is in effect for northern Scotland. - This is the Met Office Weather forecast for the morning 21/12/2024. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Amy Bokota.

00:00Hello, and very good morning to you. A very blustery weekend of weather ahead for this
00:04busy travel weekend before Christmas. And that's all thanks to this area of low pressure
00:09arriving into the early hours of Saturday, a squeeze on those isobars on the southern
00:13flank of that, giving a particularly windy day through Saturday and widely across the
00:17UK through Sunday as well, before that slowly begins to move away and we start to see some
00:21calmer conditions in towards the start of Monday. Back to this morning though, so a
00:26fairly wet start to the day for much of the UK. Got this cold front sinking southeast
00:30and in that cooler air, we do have those winds strengthening. So we have a yellow wind warning
00:35in force through Saturday morning, right the way through the day. And that's for the northern
00:39half of the country, widely expecting to see winds around 50 to 60 miles per hour. Across
00:44the very far north of Scotland, they will be a touch stronger, could see 80 miles per
00:48hour on some exposed coasts. And with that, it could lead to some travel disruptions.
00:51So please do make sure that you plan your travels accordingly. Temperatures are going
00:57to be a bit milder across the south, 11 to 13 degrees, still fairly damp across the very
01:02far southern half of UK, holding on some rain into the afternoon as well. Elsewhere, it's
01:06going to be fairly frequent blustery showers and perhaps a touch of hill snow and temperatures
01:11in the single figures across Scotland through the rest of Saturday. Then it's going to be
01:15holding on to that windy picture, blustery showers moving across the rest of the UK,
01:19that rain clearing to the south of England as we head into the early hours of Sunday
01:23and frequent blustery showers covering the rest of the UK. And on Sunday morning, they're
01:28going to be particularly cool and they could see some hill snow for parts of Northern Ireland,
01:33Northern Wales and Northern England and parts of Scotland in the early hours of Sunday.
01:39Temperatures during the morning on Sunday, around two to three degrees across the northern
01:43half of the UK, a touch milder across the south. But again, with that wind not expecting
01:47to see any frost moving through the rest of Sunday, then further blustery showers across
01:53the UK. They do start to ease as we head later on through the morning. And those wintry nature
01:59to those showers do become restricted to Scotland by the time we head in towards the afternoon.
02:03A few brighter spells, but it will be widely windy through the day on Sunday for many places,
02:08expecting to see winds up around 50 to 60 miles per hour. So temperatures generally
02:13around seven to nine degrees across the UK on Sunday. But with that wind, it's not going
02:18to be feeling too pleasant. We've got the wind chill on here and you can see with that
02:23wind temperatures going to be feeling more like zero to two degrees. So certainly a very
02:28chilly feel on Sunday. Winds do begin to ease as we head through Sunday evening, but we
02:34do have some further mild and windy weather on Monday before things turn a little bit
02:38calmer over Christmas. If you want to check out any more on our weather, please do have
